CANON SUBORDINATION — this document is PROPOSAL-TIER: it serves canon and never outranks it.
The canon: the CVD · the T1 foundation docs · the T0 registries (registries/) · the spine
(docs/spine/CH_*.md) · the region pages (_source/02_Tier_2_Region_Pages/). Authority order:docs/DOC_MAP.md§ 0.
Canon served (scanned from this document's own citations — widen it by hand where it is thin):
T1_Build_Pipeline_Contracts
READ THAT CANON FIRST — open it and derive from it before you build anything from this document.
If this document disagrees with canon, CANON WINS and this document is the defect — fix the
document, never the canon. Nothing here is applied until it is ratified into canon.
Beat structure, fork shapes, SQ stages/gates, and spatial requirements COME FROM the spine's typed
graph (the §10/§10b/§11 rows and the §3b sites). The page adds region-scope quest dressing, the
side-quest seeds, and the convergence-node feed notes. Everything below the Main Story and
boss-routing paragraphs is proposal-tier region dressing consumed from this region's two audited
deep-read shelves (sumatra-batak and sumatra_java): each entry carries its citation, each is opt-in,
and none of them gates the main line. Multi-path and no-dead-end are structural here and are stated
as a build constraint, not an aspiration — every seed below has at least two honest ways through it,
and refusing, failing, or never finding one costs texture, standing, and intel, never progress
toward the Bay-of-Bengal departure. Two seeds carry a gating temptation and are pre-answered: a
correct oracle read SHORTENS a lead in the ledger arc and never walls it, and Surat Batak literacy
opens the faster and richer route through the pustaha material while every pustaha-locked fact also
reaches the player through testimony — the apprentice Siddarta Sinaga reads aloud, the Lake Toba
elder tells, the monk Ven. Sunyata holds his own copy of the evidence.
Quest typing is owned by the §7.5 Section-13 seed-stub step, which types each seed against the
ratified §6.5 quest_type enum in T1_Build_Pipeline_Contracts — an ACTIVE canonical vocabulary
carrying a live extension pass in a parallel lane (D-QUEST-TYPE-MINT), so this page states no member
count the extension would leave stale. This section therefore neither assigns a quest_type to any
seed nor mints one: no seed below is force-fit into a near-miss member, and no new member is declared
here. What this harvest generated instead is recorded as mint INPUT to that lane, exactly as the
audits filed it: the queued seed_kinds are ten encounters, eight minigame classes, seven
festival-or-daily-immersion beats, six trade expressions, five side-questline candidates and one
mini-arc situation, and the audit trail carries mint_flags across all six records — a
divination-minigame class the pipeline is meant to re-skin per culture, a script-literacy
acquisition class, a craft-instruction class, an applied-chemistry crafting class, an
inscription-decode and object-authentication class, a non-combat contest-of-knowledge class, an
opt-in repeatable economic traversal, a non-combat veneration interaction with an integrity
consequence, and a provenance-and-restitution trace. Those are stated as demand, never as canon. The
ratified secondary encounter_facet field does apply and is carried from the rows: the porsili rite,
the omen beats, the solobean, the roused singa facade, the jar-bound captive, the pangulubalang, the
bius rite and the pulas all ride facet folklore; everything else is facet none.
Citation and attribution conventions binding on every entry below, established by the audits and not
re-litigated here. SRC_00226 anchors are PRINT pages (print equals the PDF index minus two,
confirmed across sixteen sampled pages), and the porhalanan table anchor is corrected to print 77-79.
SRC_00446 anchors are likewise restated in PRINT (print equals the PDF index minus one, proved
against the surviving printed folios); the record's own numbers are PDF indices. SRC_00152 carries a
zero offset and its anchors stand as printed. SRC_00228 paginates 9-21 and its anchors stand.
SRC_00158 cites print pages in the 164-179 range. SRC_01758 is an unpaginated essay and is anchored
by its own section headings. Three attribution rules bind alongside: SRC_00158 is shelved
sumatra_java but a pustaha is a BATAK divination manuscript and everything drawn from it is
attributed to the Batak, never to Java; SRC_00228's own ground is the west coast at Sibolga and
Barus and the Dairi-speaking Kelasen area, so seeds it feeds may be ROUTED to samosir_highlands as a
canon siting but nothing sited there is cited to that article AS located there; and the Batak
speech-communities are held apart by name, so a Karo form (bilang-bilang, the pulas) stays
Karo-attributed and is carried by a Karo hand even when it plays on Toba ground.
Main Story: the CH_05 beats at the anchor's sites — the Borobudur ascent, Mahakala gate-trial, and

where a seed reads as a fight it is an approach obstacle or an evidence node on an existing row.
The harvest's centre of gravity is writing and the reading of signs, and it is treated here as a
system the player learns rather than as flavour. Surat Batak is a real abugida whose base letters,
the ina ni surat, each carry an inherent /a/ that the anak ni surat diacritics modify; the source
enumerates four such functions — replace the inherent /a/ with schwa, /e/, /i/, /o/ or /u/ (the
schwa in Karo and Pakpak only), add the nasal /ng/, add the fricative /h/ (Karo, Pakpak and
Simalungun), and delete the /a/ outright [SRC: SRC_01758 — Sejarah aksara Batak (Kozok), Ina ni
Surat and Anak ni Surat]. The script self-names surat na sampulu sia, the nineteen letters, and the
manuscript record supports nineteen to twenty basic signs varying by dialect, with the diacritic
inventory itself counted differently in different passages — that range is the honest figure and is
not standardized away [SRC: SRC_00158, p. 168 n. 21 — Between Mind and Soul: The Pustaha
Manuscript]. Both regional restrictions ship, because a Karo or Pakpak puzzle is unsolvable without
them. The system's deepest read is that not every inscription decodes: on amulet bamboo and bone the
characters are often deliberately meaningless or erased, because the power lay in the ACT of
inscription rather than in a message, so a player who assumes every mark resolves to a sentence is
wrong by design [SRC: SRC_00226, print p. 9-11, print p. 81-83 — The Power of Writing: Batak
Manuscripts]. Divination is the second half of the same system: the porhalanan calendar, whose
principal catalogue spelling is porhalanan and whose attested variant is porhalaan (both ship, cited
as the record cited carries them), never counted time and had no computational function — its only
use was judging auspicious days.
Literacy and inscription seeds, opt-in ladders that reward understanding the system rather than rote
lookup:
script the way a Batak student did, scratching characters onto a bamboo practice-chip before
earning the bark book, then sounding out a pustaha line letter by letter to open the next clue;
mastery scales from single glyphs to whole divination passages [SRC: SRC_01758 — Ina ni Surat;
Anak ni Surat; SRC: SRC_00228, p. 11, p. 13 — Van der Tuuk's Collection of Batak Manuscripts].
The medium teaches its own lesson, and the era-present half of the ecology is content-keyed across
two materials: divination prescriptions on bark, stories and laments on bamboo [SRC: SRC_00228,
p. 13, p. 14]. The one attested letter in that collection is inscribed on a bamboo tube, and it is
precisely that bamboo correspondence which proves reading and writing were not the ritual experts'
monopoly [SRC: SRC_00228, p. 13, p. 14]. The collection's third medium, imported European paper,
is nineteenth-century collection context and not a 1200-present material — it was produced for a
collector at his own request and was never private correspondence — so it is carried in the
forward-stratum provenance seed below and never on this ladder [SRC: SRC_00228, p. 13].
Non-gating by construction, per the framing above
the Old-Javanese stone and traces shared letter-shapes back up the family tree, the worked example
being the letter Na, whose Na-kuno form still resembles its far older Kawi ancestor. The stronger
epigraphic beat rides beside it and ships with it: Batak Ja is Da plus a horizontal stroke, a
derivation that holds in Kawi and not in Pallava, which is the source's own evidence for early
Kawi influence on the developing Batak script — carried alongside the shared-ancestry framing
rather than suppressed in favour of a cleaner independence story [SRC: SRC_01758 — Aksara Batak
dan sejarahnya; Silsilah Aksara; the Na-letter evolution passage, revised block]. The comparison
is Thread 17's anchor and is cited canon-side and to SRC_01758; SRC_00228 does not attest it and
is never cited for it
Mandailing, Simalungun, Pakpak) and even by which datu taught the scribe, so the player learns to
place a pustaha by its glyph variants. The method's own limit is the interesting part and is built
in: six pustaha from six districts of the Toba sphere already differ measurably from one another,
no firm Toba Timur / Toba Barat boundary is established, and too few manuscripts carry secure
provenance, so the forensic returns a RANGE and never a pinpoint [SRC: SRC_01758 — Huruf Cetakan
Zending & Landsdrukkerij; Analisis Ina ni Surat]. Applied against the brokerage it separates
tampered route-knowledge manuscripts from genuine ones; feeds SQ4 and the pustaha-recovery branch
hand, a legitimate datu's inherited knowledge continued and then corrupted by a successor. Working
with Siddarta Sinaga the player separates the entries belonging to the art of preserving life and
to divination from the additions in the art of destroying life, which is where the recipe for
raising and feeding the killing-spirit sits; the payoff names exactly what Siahaan corrupted and
hands the community the proof [SRC: SRC_00158, p. 167, p. 169]. The three-arts taxonomy is the
source's own classification of pustaha CONTENT and ships whole as the chapter's moral instrument;
it is not presented as a corruption-test the Batak community applies, which the record does not
support. Malevolence is grounded in the tradition's own condemned figure, never in the datu-office
or the community
known as musuh berngi, and must decode its glyphs to learn who is threatened and by whom [SRC:
SRC_01758 — Analisis Ina ni Surat]. It is a real documented Karo practice, the equivalent of a
poison-pen letter, and it is staged as exactly that: the dread comes from an unsigned threat in a
real hand, never from a magic scroll, and lens A4 alone carries it. Where the letter's threat
touches the datu-commanded killing-spirit, that element is cited to SRC_00226 and SRC_00158 and
never to SRC_01758, which carries no creature material at all
the datu's habit of wandering is itself what blurred the script's regional boundaries, so each
such teacher met on the roads between Toba, Simalungun and the Karo north can teach a new regional
letter-variant and open pustaha the player could not previously read [SRC: SRC_01758 — Analisis
Ina ni Surat]. A protected teacher-ally persona, held explicitly distinct from the corrupt
individual Datu Siahaan; soft, repeatable, non-gating, and the widening mechanism for the literacy
ladder. Zone-Catalog call, the same one the salt trail carries: those highland roads are not a
catalog zone and the record's own hint calls the encounter siteless, so the circuit needs either a
corridor zone row or an explicit off-catalog treatment before build
Divination and oracle seeds, the reusable class this harvest most clearly wants:
twelve to thirteen horizontal month-lines crossed by thirty vertical day-lines, its cells reckoned
from the conjunction of the Scorpion constellation (Hala or Kala) with the moon, and consulted
before a journey, a harvest, a house-raising, a marriage, a planting, or a fight [SRC: SRC_00226,
print p. 77-79, print p. 19; SRC: SRC_00158, p. 170]. The alternation between twelve and thirteen
lines is the source's own and is not flattened to a tidy twelve. A good read grants a favourable
travel or encounter modifier on the following beat; a bad day is harder and never a wall, and the
missionary record supplies the concrete stake — waiting outside the shelter, exposed. The class is
written to be re-skinned per culture by the pipeline. Rendered as the datu's own legitimate
expertise and a knowledge-system, never as superstition offered for mockery
pormesa na sampulu dua, the twelve zodiac constellations read against the planets, then panggorda
na ualu, eight animal-deities of the eight compass directions, then pehu na pitu, seven deities of
the seven weekdays, then pormamis na lima, five deities of the five parts of the day read on a
five-by-five lettered grid [SRC: SRC_00226, print p. 70-71]. Each escalation costs time and
offering-materials and sharpens the answer. Where this feeds the SQ4 ledger arc it shortens a
lead; it never gates one
performed: buffalo-sacrifice augury (porbuhitan), chicken-divination, and dream-reading, each with
its own trained terminology and casting ritual [SRC: SRC_00228, p. 11, p. 12, p. 13]. A well-read
oracle returns a concrete forecast or a protective effect for the beat ahead; a botched or corrupt
reading misleads. Telling true datu knowledge from Siahaan's corrupted use of the same craft is
the actual skill being taught, and the craft itself is codified expertise, never exoticized
killing-spirit will strike next, the cause and remedy of a household's sorrow, the safe route
north), instructions are read from the pustaha, and the answer is sought in a fowl's entrails and
cross-checked against the porhalaan, which is the spelling this record carries [SRC: SRC_00158,
p. 170, p. 171]. The return is intel and not loot: a concrete hint, a marked map location, or a
warded night that changes the following beat. Extispicy is staged with the dignity of
knowledge-seeking, not as a gross-out
beat rather than a puzzle: the datu beheads a cock and casts it into the ampang basket that stands
for the whole cosmos, Batara Guru is held to descend into the basket and settle the bird's final
position, and that position reads yes or no. The wider register is attested alongside it — manuk
gantung, the cock hung until dead and read from the entrails; aji payung, the pig's or dog's head
cut; gorak-gorakan ni babi, read from the dying animal's convulsions [SRC: SRC_00226, print p.
73-74]. The player decides whether to trust, contest, or fake the reading the corrupt datu
delivers, knowing the community takes the omen as binding. Animal-sacrifice divination is the
tradition's own attested practice and ships at full specificity with weight; it is neither
sanitized into a bloodless gesture nor staged for shock
the outsider before granting trust or lore: quick huling-hulingan riddles first, then the harder
narrative torhan-torhan whose answer is a small story [SRC: SRC_00228, p. 15, p. 16]. Winning
opens cosmology, the caldera's deep-time memory and standing; the contest is talk-your-way-in, is
re-enterable after a loss, and gates nothing. NPC Lake Toba Elder Raja Tuan Ompu Martua
(CHAR_0036); feeds SQ11 and the Naga Padoha cosmology beat
different links of it. Nusantara scribes wrote on perishable stock only — bamboo, tree-bark in
Sumatra, and palm-leaf — and never on stone or metal as MANUSCRIPT stock, which is why the
manuscript record looks the way it does; the region's stone and metal writing is the older
Indic-script epigraphy, a different tradition from the bark book [SRC: SRC_01758 — Silsilah
Aksara]. The bark is the inner bark, the secondary phloem, of Aquilaria malaccensis: the player
strips the long stripe, works it soft, folds it concertina-style, glues and carves the two wooden
covers, and threads the fibre string through the two holes in the bottom cover so the finished
book can be carried, stored, and hung on a house wall [SRC: SRC_00158, p. 165, p. 169, p. 171].
The tool and finishing detail comes from the catalogue: scrape inner from outer, dry, straighten
and smooth the edges, polish with Ficus ampelas leaves, fold by mallet along the creases, fix the
ink-ground with rice-water, rule blind lines with the balobas and cut with the panggorit
bamboo-knife, inscribe in black with red and yellow reserved for the diagrams, and close the
concertina between the carved covers with a plaited rattan band [SRC: SRC_00226, print p. 65-67].
The ink is its own step and its own small chemistry: resinous Manggistan wood is burned to deposit
baja soot on a knife or sword blade, the soot is scraped off and bound with dammar resin and
albumin [SRC: SRC_00158, p. 169]. Quality of the finished book governs what oracle and pagar texts
it can carry. The pustaha is a sacral object made by the datu and the craft carries its ritual
rules and taboos with weight; real page-content is referenced and never reproduced. The
rabbit-hole underneath is the best one on the page — Aquilaria malaccensis is the agarwood tree,
source of gaharu, one of the strait economy's premier luxury resins, so the datu's sacred book and
the region's most valuable export are the same species [SRC: SRC_00158, p. 165]
spirit off a sleeping village the player forages and assembles a pagar under the healer Boru
Simanjuntak (CHAR_0038): a datu's set of ingredients drawn from plants, fruits and animals, made
into a protective charm that is swallowed, hung on a house wall, or sealed into an amulet [SRC:
SRC_00158, p. 169]. A Trade-4 Herbalism gather-and-craft loop that lands directly in the CH05_B05
night-ward and the local.begu_ganjang_warded state
point carved as a seated figure, its mouth plugged with a singa stopper, and sometimes carrying
the earth-lizard deity Boraspati ni Tano carved inside the bore. The player can commission or
restore one as a Herbalism and ritual-container craft, learning which horn, which stopper-figure
and which interior emblem a legitimate potion-vessel carries — so a faked or defiled one reads
wrong at a glance during the investigation of the datu's trade [SRC: SRC_00446, print p. 45,
print p. 57]. Feeds SQ4 as a physical tell
charcoal and saltpeter, then folded in shredded leaves gathered during a thunderstorm and herbs
harvested during an earthquake so the charge would carry the force of thunder and quake, and the
finished charge was carried in a carved parpanggalahan buffalo-horn flask [SRC: SRC_00446, print
p. 68, print p. 69]. The real chemistry is the minigame: the sulfur-charcoal-saltpeter ratio
genuinely governs the burn, so knowing the science makes the batch stronger while the sympathetic
framing alone does not — which is the rewards-intelligence pillar working. The additive attested
alongside it is CITRUS, not calcium: juice of the local citrus, a kind of lime, was added to magic
potions and to gunpowder to improve efficacy, and the nineteenth-century sources' lemon-and-citron
wording is a naming artefact [SRC: SRC_00446, print p. 69]. The tradition's own reasoning is
rendered as reasoning and never mocked. Siting is corrected and binding: the foraging and crafting
beats belong to the Toba caldera highlands at samosir_highlands, explicitly NOT merapi_slopes —
the source's own Merapi is the Minangkabau sacred mountain, a third peak distinct from both Java's
Merapi and West Sumatra's Marapi, and the two-Merapi conflation is a known trap on this shelf. Era
honesty binds alongside, on the page's own Candi Sukuh precedent and on the record's own note that
its catalogued objects are a nineteenth- and twentieth-century material stratum while the craft
traditions they encode are the deep layer: the recipe is attested through the nineteenth-century
ethnographic corpus and the parpanggalahan flask presupposes a firearm era, so the chain stages
behind a dated stratum note rather than as ordinary 1200-present technology, and the chemistry it
teaches is the part that carries either way
love lament on a bamboo joint that doubles as a courtship token, then to carry it to its intended
and choose the right verse [SRC: SRC_00228, p. 13]. The form is specifically KARO and is named and
carried as Karo, commissioned from or brought by a Karo hand and never re-attributed to Toba; the
source's hedge stands, that it may have functioned as a magic device. Honouring the courtship or
using the charm as leverage is a small integrity-scored social arc with a daily-life reward
true history. The old trail past Pasaguan ran from the Asahan and Batubara coast up through the
Bandar Pulau highland corridor toward the southern end of Lake Toba; the player runs a pack
caravan along it, managing load and weather, and learns firsthand why the strait network the datu
is selling matters to every inland marga [SRC: SRC_00152, p. 1, p. 12 — A Malayo-Batak Group of
Images near Aek Tarum]. The routing is fixed to that corridor: it is neither Palembang, which lies
most of the island away, nor Samosir, which is a different community's ground inside the lake.
Zone-Catalog call, stated rather than assumed: the page's catalog carries four zones and none of
them is the Asahan coast or the Bandar Pulau corridor, so this caravan needs either a new zone row
or an explicit off-catalog corridor treatment before it can be built, and nothing here asserts a
catalog row that exists today. Two evidentiary caveats ride the seed and are built rather than
smoothed. Salt is the trail's premise but is the field-note author's own hedged speculation; the
1823 export list actually records rattans, salt-fish, horses and silk cloths, and the port it
describes lies slightly north of the site, so the joined route is our synthesis of two adjacent
real facts and is presented as the region's working economy, not as a quoted claim. And the same
paragraph that supplies the caravan its cargo also records that enslaved people and horses were
brought down from the interior in considerable numbers. That is built, not dropped. It is routed
through the INSTITUTION and its real causes — debt-bondage, captive-taking, and elite brokerage at
both ends of the route under real economic pressure — and never concentrated into one corrupt
individual, because inventing a puppet-master to absorb a documented regional trade spares the
polities their own agency and teaches the player something false. Highland communities stay agents
inside the network and not only its cargo; the player's participation in, refusal of, or
subversion of that leg is a playable integrity test (lens D4), and no branch of it gates the
caravan or the chapter. The record of the network comes from a Company officer describing a trade
the Company profited from, and that composition is itself readable
reached only through the page's forward-fluctuation stratum and never in the 1200 present, because
an 1823 East India Company report has no existence in the chapter's own frame. The 1823 report
applies the era's cannibal slur to the Kataran highlanders, and it is neither deleted nor repeated
as fact: it is attributed on its face to its named East India Company author and to the Company's
commercial interest in the people it was trading with, and it is contradicted on that same page by
the record of Batak cotton grown in the country, spun and woven at home, dyed blue with a locally
grown indigo and coloured from lakar and forest woods, and traded through a port that mustered six
hundred perahus [SRC: SRC_00152, p. 12]. The contradiction is the teaching; the build makes no
counter-assertion the sources do not support. A curious player can follow the real chemistry
underneath — indigo reduction and oxidation in the dye vat, and separately the iron-oxide red and
carbon black a stone carver's palette would have called for, which the field note itself offers
only as an inference from weathered paint and never as an assay. The two colour worlds are kept
apart, and the distinction is the better craft observation: the woven cloth is dark blue with red
and white lines worked in, while the carved images wear their cloth in a carver's pigments. The
player can also be told, as a reading and not as an attested fact, that Aek Tarum plausibly means
the indigo river, since aek is water or river in Batak and tarum is the indigo plant. The field
note draws no such connection and the inference is ours
enact: a figurine is carved from a banana-trunk or sugar-palm to resemble the sick person, then
offered so the sickness-spirit abandons the body and pounces on the effigy, which is hung in a
lonely place and abandoned; sili means exchange, and the porsili na ari na pitu answer to the
seven weekdays [SRC: SRC_00226, print p. 68-69]. The good path supports Boru Simanjuntak's rite.
The corrupt datu perverts the identical craft into the killing-spirit he keeps — the same
knowledge, the opposite intent — and that symmetry is the chapter's cleanest statement that the
office is not the offence
made servant-champion, the pangulubalang, from ulubalang, champion in war, set to fight his
enemies alongside his poisons and the dorma philtre that can be turned to mislead and destroy an
enemy's soul [SRC: SRC_00226, print p. 69-72]. This is the tradition's OWN condemned register and
it grounds the corrupt individual without defaming the collective or the legitimate office. Staged
as the compound-duel escalation on BE_0005's existing phase P2 at CH05_B11 — an instrument on an
existing boss row, never a new boss id
holding pupuk and, at its darkest, the pangulubalang proper: the captive spirit of a human
ritually put to death, whose remains were rendered into a substance that could animate a guardian
figure or be turned against enemies [SRC: SRC_00446, print p. 24, print p. 47, print p. 48, print
p. 59]. Tracing Siahaan's instruments the player finds such a jar and frees the bound captive with
the healer's rite. The human-sacrifice substrate ships at full specificity: it is documented, it
was condemned by the tradition's own converts in the source's own printed text, it is routed
strictly through the corrupt individual's disgrace, and the resolution honours that condemnation
rather than softening it. SQ4 evidence node; feeds BE_0005 and never becomes a new encounter row
pandingdingan support beams read as the serpent's body and separately carved singa heads tenoned
to the beam-ends as its face, so the whole facade is one composite guardian of buffalo, horse and
serpent-dragon watching the street [SRC: SRC_00446, print p. 23, print p. 39, print p. 45]. At the
corrupt datu's compound these guardians have been fed pupuk and roused — the animation mechanic is
the source's own, pupuk applied to sculpted figures to animate them for protection or aggression
[SRC: SRC_00446, print p. 47] — and the roused singa facade is the approach obstacle before the
duel-ground, out-maneuvered or dismantled. It rides the existing BE_0005 phase-2 approach and
mints nothing. Ordinary villagers' houses are inert, protected set-dressing throughout; the
fightable thing is the singa facade of one man's compound, never the honored Naga Padoha and never
a community's homes
whereupon the horse leapt in and both drowned and turned to stone, and the drowned man's begu
became a solobean beneath the caldera water [SRC: SRC_00446, print p. 48, print p. 149]. On a
night traverse of the Samosir shore the solobean rises from the shallows near a stone
horse-and-rider outcrop: endured, warded by the healer's rite, or driven off, and settling it
quietly earns a stretch of safe lakeshore and a horse-related lore fragment. Its fightability is
premised on MALEVOLENCE, which both cited places state — the source calls the solobean a
malevolent type of sombaon, that is, of the higher spirits, while the same source's glossary makes
no rank claim about it at all — an inconsistency recorded rather than resolved, and rank is
deliberately NOT the criterion. It is not defanged, and it is held distinct from the ancestral dead
the region's veneration practice honors and from the bound Naga Padoha at CH05_B06
twins Si Adji Donda Hatahutan and his sister Si Tapi Radja Na Uasan, who fled a forbidden love
into the forest and climbed the enchanted tree pio-pio-tangguhan, where each in turn merged into
the wood; a succession of datus and animals — a hen, a buffalo, a snake — tried to rescue them and
merged too, until the tree was felled and all the trapped were carved into the staff, their
sudden-death spirits making it potent [SRC: SRC_00446, print p. 40, print p. 43]. Guided by the
apprentice the player reads the carved figures top to bottom to reconstruct the story and
authenticate a true staff against the corrupt datu's forgery. Precision that binds the build: the
source describes an iconographic FIGURE PROGRAMME generally thought to represent characters in the
legend, not a script, so this is a figure-reading puzzle and it does not route to the inscription
spine or claim a text the source does not show. The incest motif is the tradition's own etiology
of the staff's potency and is handled as sacred narrative
demanding of another that he pay up or comply [SRC: SRC_00228, p. 14]. It is built as what the
record documents: intra-Batak headman-to-headman pressure, standing on its own local causes, lens
set A4 / A3 / G6 (the integrity web) rather than an antagonist-apparatus lens. Delivering,
suppressing or exposing it shifts standing. If it connects outward to the brokerage the player
discovers that, and the cross-read against Chelvan Kanakkan's ledger happens only where canon
establishes the link — it is never the letter's premise, because assuming a foreign broker behind
a local squeeze is the true-cause error this shelf was flagged for
a male body of ritual functionaries over the rice-lands, and the paniaran, a women's organisation,
with no state above the clan-and-bius level; the great periodic bius ceremonies ward disaster and
mark the agricultural cycle, and five deities are invoked as Debata [SRC: SRC_00226, print p.
17-18]. The player moves through one as living ambient immersion that also reads the community's
mood toward a disguised outsider. The gondang ensemble sounds through it as the page's own
Section-10 canon (Thread 21); that detail is carried page-side and is not cited to SRC_00226,
which does not attest it
divination the pustaha records: the datu reads the offering, the portions owed to the spirits are
set aside as saetan, and the double-horned head afterward crowns the saddle-roofed house [SRC:
SRC_00228, p. 12]. Attending respectfully raises community standing and opens the augury minigame.
The player-facing rule is that the ceremony is immersion and never a required kill — violence
offered, not forced — and that rule governs the PLAYER only: the rite itself is a real buffalo
sacrifice and is staged with its killing, its prestige and its augury intact, because sanitizing
it into a bloodless festival would be care-inflation rather than care
commissions a si gale-gale: a near-lifesize wooden puppet in his likeness on a wheeled platform,
worked by a system of strings so that it dances and weeps at the funeral while the family dances
alongside [SRC: SRC_00446, print p. 60, print p. 63, print p. 149]. The player can attend the
papurpur-sepata rite, help the carver fit the movable eyes — an alloy of lead and antimony over
resin pupils — and the hidden moss-sponge that lets it shed tears, and walk the puppet to the
market where meat is shared out. The tradition's own closing act is not softened: the puppet is
shot and thrown over the village walls. Carrying the beat with the gravity of the proverb behind
it, about a man rich for a moment and without an heir, raises the community read; treating it as a
curiosity chills it. A living funerary tradition, protected, and never a combat target
medicine and protection, jimat, for the group that raises them, with the story of Guru Tonggal
Begu told over the planting [SRC: SRC_00228, p. 19]. Two precisions bind: Guru Tonggal Begu is the
TITLE OF THE STORY told at the rite and not the rite's own name, and the record names no target
for the protection, so the connection between the twin trees and the healer's ward against the
killing-spirit is a page-side design choice and never a cited claim. Tending the trees is a
repeatable daily-immersion beat that marks a house as kept; the plant pairing and the term jimat
ship at full specificity
stored and hung on house walls (the source hedges whether hung open, and the hedge stands),
ordinary people scratch letters, poetry and lists onto bamboo stems and onto buffalo shoulder- and
rib-bones, betel containers carry inscriptions, and men blacken their teeth with the same baja
soot that makes the ink [SRC: SRC_00158, p. 167, p. 169, p. 171]. The source's inscribed tobacco
containers are held out of the 1200 present as a post-Columbian-exchange material and belong to
the forward strata; the betel and areca complex is the era-present one. Every readable prop is
a small authenticity beat, and the cumulative effect answers the outsider's illiterate-primitive
read that a player may arrive carrying — by showing literacy as ordinary rather than by narrating
a rebuttal. It also seats the region's readable-object density in samosir_highlands and the Karo
highland ambient; palembang_port's own readable density is Old-Malay and Srivijayan and is not fed
by this Batak substrate. It feeds Section 4
laments into bamboo joints, and the practice is the strongest single proof that literacy reached
well beyond the ritual experts [SRC: SRC_01758 — Analisis Ina ni Surat]. The player finds and
reads these carved segments as small vignettes around the highland villages and, once literate,
can carve a short lament as an opt-in expression that lifts standing. Attributed to Karo men
specifically, not universalized and not aged down, and the emphasis stays on the WRITING — no
singing and no public performance are staged, because the source attests none
The four seeds the page already carried, each now standing on the harvest:
Palembang wharves to name who was bought; NPC Broker Chelvan Kanakkan (CHAR_0035, BE_0005_S1);
integrity implication: expose the brokerage cleanly (generative) versus keep the ledger's leverage
as your own (corrosive); reward the collapse-monetizing intel and the 1025 CE destruction-pattern
anchor. The oracle ladder and the pressing letter both feed it; neither is required to close it
trading; NPC Pustaha Apprentice Siddarta Sinaga (CHAR_0032); integrity implication: return the
manuscript to the keepers (generative) versus sell its information forward (corrosive); reward the
Surat Batak literacy and an information-standing shift. The glyph-variant forensic and the
multiple-hands palaeography are its two investigative instruments
Master Nakhoda Iskandar (CHAR_0037); integrity implication: give him a way back (generative)
versus use his complicity as leverage (corrosive); reward the port standing and the Ch-6 passage
small forest hominin; NPC a highland forager (role-titled); integrity implication: the authorial
anti-fringe frame (the cryptid discourse examined, never credited as authentic Indigenous
tradition); reward the cryptozoology substrate depth
Candidates the harvest adds, each opt-in and non-gating:
forward-fluctuation stratum, the player meets a trade in inauthentic magic objects: bark books and
inscribed buffalo-bones whose characters are sloppy or meaningless, produced to sell to outsiders,
with bone specimens from the Karo plateau near Berastagi to be regarded with particular suspicion
[SRC: SRC_00226, print p. 65, print p. 83-84]. The player learns to tell a datu's true working
manuscript from a market curiosity by script consistency and text sense, which is Surat Batak
literacy paying out as evidence. The fakery is framed authorially as a market phenomenon of the
colonial period — the genuine craft is the anchor and the fake is the derivative, never the Batak
wanting an authentic tradition
manuscripts at all. It reaches only through the forward stratum, never the 1200 present. The
documented chain is complete and is built as such: a mission-civilisatrice project set out to
annul the datu's role in society by taking his objects out of circulation, with collectors and
missionaries destroying them or acquiring them for ethnographic museums and for the tourist
market; the mission doctor Johannes Winkler, who studied the language and collected the artefacts,
stands at one end of it; and at the other, the same collector acquired an object around 1910 and
sold it to the ethnological museum in Hamburg in 1912 [SRC: SRC_00226, print p. 11, print p. 17,
print p. 81]. A tourist market for pustaha ran for at least a century and some of those books
reached museum collections through middlemen [SRC: SRC_00226, print p. 65]. From colonial times
the pustaha were often brought to Europe as souvenirs and kept in national and private
collections, and something near two thousand now sit in collections worldwide [SRC: SRC_00158, p.
164, p. 165]; Herman Neubronner van der Tuuk, the nineteenth-century linguist whose collecting and
analysis produced the sub-Toba classification, is named in the same article [SRC: SRC_00158, p.
169], and the Batak manuscript collection carrying his name is the ground of SRC_00228, including
the imported-European-paper manuscripts written for him at his own request [SRC: SRC_00228, p. 13].
Suppression, extraction, sale, display. The antagonist is the collecting and mission apparatus and
never a community, and Batak agency is SHOWN rather than routed around: the datu who hides a
pustaha, the one who dictates it to a pupil, the one who sells it and the one who refuses to sell
are all the community acting, and that is the beat. In the same forward window the
Sisingamangaraja line is reached at reference register and stated plainly rather than softened
into legend — the clan's leaders were regarded as representatives of the deity Batara Guru and
were based at Bakkara, and Sisingamangaraja XII led sustained resistance to Dutch colonial
expansion in the Batak lands and was killed by Dutch colonial forces in 1907, which is why he is
an Indonesian National Hero [SRC: SRC_00226, print p. 15]. No deity-name is placed on a mortal NPC
and no revered figure is cast as villain. This seed is the ground truth beneath the
pustaha-recovery branch: most pustaha are elsewhere
mini-arc situation this harvest queues, and it is written above with the literacy ladder it
widens: a chain of teacher-encounters across the highland roads that steadily opens more of the
manuscript world, with no beat in it required and no beat in it repeatable into triviality [SRC:
SRC_01758 — Analisis Ina ni Surat]
L1 fun-beat seed (SEED — feeds the pending minigame/vehicle frameworks (Josh-pending); non-gating;
invents no named canon): the Toba regatta / port market-run premise — the caldera-lake at Samosir
and the Palembang wharf world already on the page (the samosir_highlands and palembang_port zones)
seed an opt-in lake-regatta and a timed port market-run, a traversal/vehicle activity off the lake
and the Musi-river wharves for community standing and trade-web reward, offered never forced. The
salt-trail caravan above is its overland twin and shares the same offered-never-forced rule.
Convergence-node feed notes: FORK_CH05_B's community read persists as ws.community_state_per_region
with forward_track none (the adult-Sumatra revisit consumer not yet pinned — the Ch 60 Khan-band
revisit the candidate); the corrosive lethal route carries a sustained-corrosive reading the IR-3
system flags as a candidate trigger for an invested-companion belief system (Ana, CHAR_0017) via
ws.integrity_score + ws.reputation_biography_propagation, its consumer beats not yet authored;
path_bucket UNLOCKED (Ch 65 lock). The seeds above feed that surface at three points and no others:
conduct at the bius rite, the buffalo sacrifice and the si gale-gale funeral reads into the community
mark; the salt-trail integrity test and the pressing letter read into ws.integrity_score and
ws.relationship_history; and the provenance trace and the tourist-fake investigation are
forward-stratum reads that write nothing in the 1200 present.
