Home-base trade content: none roots here — Bali is a one-chapter island on the outbound arc, and

every trade it touches is a substrate seed ahead of its own home chapter. The trade numbers below

are read from the live registry, not assumed: T0_Trade_Registry carries ten trades, and the four

this region expresses are TRADE_03 Blacksmithing (ancient home Ch 7, S India; modern home Ch 60),

TRADE_04 Herbalism (ancient home Ch 7, S India; modern home Ch 50), TRADE_08 Engineering (ancient

home Ch 27, C Europe), and TRADE_09 Inscription (ancient home Ch 15 and Ch 29; ancient-only, no

modern home). The spine types only two of these as CH_04 trade joins — TRADE_03 through the keris

smithing and TRADE_08 through the subak works — so the Herbalism and Inscription entries below are

page-side region substrate, flagged as such, and neither claims a trade join nor a home base. The

chapter's typed inscription systems at the lontar-literacy beat are the spine's own literacy layer

and a separate join; the TRADE_09 entry here seats beside them, never in place of them.

One registry fact matters more than it looks: there is no farming trade. The ten-trade roster runs

Animal Communication, Mining, Blacksmithing, Herbalism, Alchemy, Tailoring, Culinary Arts,

Engineering, Inscription, Fishing and Navigation, and rice husbandry is in none of them. The subak's

agronomy therefore seats as a region-scope skill under the Engineering seed's hydraulic half, with

its planting-and-harvest half carried as non-trade practice — stated plainly here so no later pass

mints a farming trade out of the terraces.

Trade 3 Blacksmithing — the pande keris craft

The trade-master figures are the pande smith-clans, whom Section 8 already types as a distinct

craft polity; the page-side surface is the pande forge visit Section 13 already seeds. What the

harvest adds is the technique, and the technique is real materials science rather than craft

colour. The blade is crucible-reduced iron whose carbon content has to hold within about half a

percent — over and the steel is brittle, under and it is soft — hammer-welded in lamination with a

corrosion-resistant nickel alloy, then etched with a citrus-and-arsenic preparation that blackens

the carbon layers and leaves the nickel bright, so the fold pattern rises out of the surface

[SRC: SRC_00157 — Eiseman, Bali: Sekala & Niskala, p. 152-153]. That etched pattern is the pamor,

and the pamor is a named vocabulary, not decoration: roughly 116 distinct designs, each read as a

distinct property of the blade that carries it [SRC: SRC_00157, p. 152-156]. Meteoric iron enters

the lamination alongside the nickel alloy as the prestige stock [SRC: SRC_00157, p. 152-153].

The craft's assessment layer is as specific as its metallurgy, and it is what makes Blacksmithing

playable here before the player can forge anything. A candidate blade is measured three ways

before it is accepted: a strip of young coconut leaf folded to the blade's mid-width and stepped

along it to count the rai, the length-to-width ratio; right and left thumb-widths walked up the

blade and divided by seven; and four-finger-widths counted at the palm. Each measure returns a

different fated property — a fifteen-rai blade of the Arjuna sakti reading makes its owner beloved

and lucky and shows him enemies who have made themselves unseen, while a ten-rai reading is the

one called Kala eats his body and turns on the man who carries it, and a blade simply the wrong

size for its owner brings ruin [SRC: SRC_00157, p. 152-156]. The pamor design is read in the same

sitting, which is why a knowing seller keeps a blade's pattern from the eye of the man he is

selling it to [SRC: SRC_00157, p. 152-156]. As a trade surface this is an appraisal skill with a

real answer underneath it, exactly the rewards-intelligence register the arc promises: the player

who learns to read rai and pamor buys better and, at the trade's Ch-7 home, forges better.

Upkeep is a real part of the craft rather than an inventory chore. On the recurring Tumpek Landep

day every steel object in a household is given offerings and holy water, the keris hung in the

family shrine, sprinkled, and the offering-essence wafted over it; steel left out of the observance

is not yet valid, and its pamor property is understood to drift [SRC: SRC_00157, p. 156-157]

[SRC: SRC_00157, p. 169-170]. The observance rides the 210-day Pawukon day-cycle Section 4 already

carries; the calendrics behind that cycle are queued for Section 5 and are not restated here. The

modern-revisit extension the source notes, in which the same blessing is given to vehicles because

the tradition already classes them as weapons, is a modern-strata texture and is queued for

Section 19 rather than the era-present frame.

The rare craft-reward is the bajra-uter, a bronze prayer-bell so exacting that a smith produces one

only by chance in some hundreds of castings. Rubbed round the lip with a sandalwood stick, a little

rosin helping, it gives a pure sustained tone no struck bell produces, and villagers decline to

handle it for the force they feel in an object that rare [SRC: SRC_00157, p. 67-68]. The bajra is

the pedanda's consecrated ritual implement, and the page frames this exactly one way: it is a

smith's masterwork achieved and then held in the rite, earned through the forge and the priest's

acceptance, never a power-item taken off a shrine. Its sound-keyed use belongs to the chapter's

vril-management register rather than to loot.

Dating boundary, recorded rather than smoothed over: the keystone dates the earliest firm records

of the keris to thirteenth-century relief carving at Candi Panataran in east Java [SRC: SRC_00157,

p. 152], which sits at or just past the page's ~1200 CE present frame. Keris-class daggers plainly

predate the earliest dated relief, so this is not an anachronism finding — but four rows of the

harvest depend on the keris, Section 6 seats the region's legendary line on it, and the boundary is

written down here so a later pass inherits the evidence instead of rediscovering it.

Cross-regional relations are Section 15's to print, each carrying its own registry link_type. This

section makes none.

Trade 8 Engineering — tunnels, dividers, dams, and the law that runs them

The trade-master figure is Subak Pekaseh Ketut Sudana (CHAR_0025), the water-society head the spine

already binds to the subak read; the Jatiluwih terraces are the working surface.

The most teachable piece of the craft is the smallest. Water is split between canals by proportional

dividers cut in stone, engineered so that anyone standing at the junction can see at a glance how

much flow each canal is taking [SRC: SRC_00251 — Cultural Landscape of Bali Province, UNESCO

nomination dossier, p. II-5]. That is an audit device built into the hydraulics: the allocation

enforces itself by staying visible to everyone whose share it is. The dossier gives the dividers no

vernacular name, and the page supplies none — a local term invented for a living practice would

read as authoritative detail while being uncited, and it would run straight into the Section-17

glossary.

Above the dividers sits the boundary-crossing tunnel, and this is the region's headline engineering.

Man-high tunnels are driven sidewise through the volcanic ridges to emerge a kilometre or more

downslope, delivering small quantities of water with astonishing accuracy to terrace blocks that

could not otherwise be watered at all [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-3], with individual bores running to

about 160 m and the works built in traditional materials throughout [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-73]

[SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-74]. The craft is a named paid specialism with a documented antiquity: the

undagi aungan, irrigation-tunnel engineers, are listed among the paid specialists in the Bebetin

inscription of AD 896 [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-54]. The best tunnel builders are recorded as those of

Klungkung, called on from all over the island [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-73] — carried on this page as

a district craft-reputation attested by the dossier, not as a claim about the later Klungkung court,

which post-dates the present frame.

The apprentice loop follows the real sequence: survey the fall of the land, choose the tap-point on

the river, and drive the bore so it arrives at the terrace head with grade to spare. Get the

gradient or the tap wrong and the flow fails — statics and hydraulics as the puzzle's actual

solution, graded by whether the water arrives rather than by effort spent. Above the tunnel scale

sit the storage works: earthen prise-d'eau dams with overflow canals, banked by subak labour

against the dry season, reaching up to 35 m in Gianyar [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-73] and, at Badung,

roughly 40 m serving 478 bouw of sawah [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-74]. Those heights and that command

area are the dossier's own recorded measures of the work-form, carried here as the scale the craft

reached rather than as a survey an era-present player takes, and the bouw is the record's unit

rather than the island's.

The engineering does not stop at the works, and the page's Trade-8 lesson is that the governance is

part of the machine. Each subak is a specialized institution with its own written legal code, the

awig-awig, setting out water rights and responsibilities [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-2], and the

irrigation jurisdictions were already cross-cutting village boundaries by the eleventh century

[SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-55]. Congregations nest: the field shrine, the subak temple, the Ulun Swi,

the regional Masceti, and above them the crater-lake temple [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-6], with the

supreme Pura Ulun Danu Batur's congregation running past 250 subaks [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-5], and

that same temple functioning as the redistributive centre of the whole arrangement [SRC:

SRC_00251, p. II-20]. Disputes over water rights come to the priests, who weigh the awig-awig

against each congregation's ritual obligations — the arbitration surface Section 13's allocation

dispute already seeds. The trade lesson the player is meant to carry out of Bali toward Ch 27 is

that the hydraulics and the law are one design, and that the island's order is produced by its own

parts working to their own code.

The written record the craft leaves is itself Engineering substrate and is unusually deep: dated

Old Balinese royal inscriptions run from Sukawana in AD 882, which already mentions irrigated

fields, through Bebetin's tunnel engineers in AD 896 and Batuan's sawah in AD 1022, to Pandak

Bandung in 1071 where the word subak itself first appears [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-54] [SRC:

SRC_00251, p. II-55]. A trade with a hundred-and-ninety-year paper trail before the present frame

is a trade the player can research rather than merely practise.

The subak's own skill — rice husbandry, seated where the registry allows

No trade row owns this, so the page carries it as region-scope practice joined to the Trade-8 seed

rather than minting an eleventh trade.

Time itself is agronomic here: the traditional reckoning is keyed to the rice growth cycle

[SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-4], which is what makes the calendar a farming instrument and not only a

ritual one. The husbandry runs on distinct local varieties — red, white and black rices are grown

in Tabanan [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-38] — and its most consequential technique is coordination rather

than cultivation: by synchronizing fallow-and-flood windows across large contiguous blocks of

terraces, the subaks strand rats, insects and rice diseases with no habitat to migrate into at a

watershed scale [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-4] [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-7]. Pest control performed by

scheduling is a genuinely counter-intuitive result and it is the best single argument the region

makes for the rewards-intelligence pillar: the player who works out why everyone floods at once

understands the island.

Harvest carries its own tool and its own restraint. Rice is cut stalk by stalk with the ani-ani, a

small blade held concealed in the palm so the Rice Goddess is honoured at the time of her sacrifice

[SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-16]; the rice standing nearest the field's water inlet is bound into the

sacred cili figure, which is not eaten but carried to the rice barn and given offerings

[SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-6], and the harvest offering to the goddess is documented alongside the

granary forms [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-71]. The technique half belongs to this section as trade

content; the festival half is queued to Section 13 as immersion, and it is living religious practice

either way — rendered with weight, offered and never staged.

One modern reading is deliberately held out of the era-present frame. The dossier's organic-revival

figures — roughly ten percent yield gain and doubled soil organic matter under revived organic

cultivation [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-47] [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-48] — are a contemporary measurement

of a contemporary programme. They are queued for Section 19's modern-revisit strata and for

authorial notes; a player at ~1200 CE cannot measure soil organic matter, and admitting the number

as era-present depth would be exactly the anachronism this lane has already caught once.

Trade 4 Herbalism — the usada materia medica and the balian's branching craft

Page-side substrate, not a spine-typed trade join; the trade-master figure is Balian Made Sari

(CHAR_0026), whose warding Section 5 already carries, and the honest framing is that her ward is one

branch of a much wider craft rather than the craft entire.

The medicine is an organised materia medica of leaf, bark, root and seed preparations, taken by two

routes the tradition distinguishes: drunk as loloh, or compounded and smeared on the body as boreh,

with households keeping their own herb gardens as living drugstores so the common preparations are

gathered at the door rather than bought [SRC: SRC_00157, p. 130-131]. That gives the trade its

region-scope gather layer without inventing a node: the household garden, the terrace margin, and

the offering botanicals Section 2 already stages.

The practitioner side branches into specialisms the player can study or simply consult, and each

branch is a different door into the trade: the tulang bone-setter, the usada reader of the

medicine-lontars, the taksu spirit-medium consulted over thieves and lost things, the uat masseur

who works the body's life-channels straight, the kebal maker of amulets and love-potions, the terang

who clears weather, and the paica who carries a divinely-given relic [SRC: SRC_00157, p. 126-135].

The page states the boundary rather than blurring it: these are living practitioner roles, the

balian is a protected figure throughout the chapter, and the left-hand pengiwa branch Section 5

condemns is the tradition's own judgement and not a shading of the healer's craft. The distinct

paths are the trade's variety here; none of them gates progression, and consulting is always

available where studying is not.

Behind the practice sits a written corpus, which is what makes Herbalism researchable in this region

rather than only purchasable: the usada healing-lontars are part of the palm-leaf manuscript

tradition below, and reading them is the point at which the chapter's literacy beat and the trade

meet.

Trade 9 Inscription — the lontar craft and the languages it holds

Page-side substrate, ahead of the trade's Ch-15 and Ch-29 homes, and the natural companion to the

chapter's lontar-becomes-reading beat; the trade-master figure is Pedanda Ida Bagus Mantra

(CHAR_0023), and the working surface is the Besakih lontar library the Zone Catalog already carries.

The craft is a full production chain rather than a reading skill. Palm leaf is treated, cut and

strung; text is inscribed in Balinese script; and because the humid climate destroys the medium, the

corpus survives only by being continually recopied — the epics, the medical usada, the calendrics,

the kris-lore and the clan histories all held alive by that recopying [SRC: SRC_00157, p. 129-130].

The player-facing consequence is that in this region the trade's product is not an original but a

faithful copy, and the skill being taught is transmission: prepare the leaf, cut the letters, keep

the text exact, and the knowledge continues; skip a generation of copying and it does not.

The linguistic load is the trade's real difficulty and the reason it seats with the priestly and

performing castes. Balinese runs three speech registers — low, medium and high — drawn from two

distinct linguistic origins and deployed by caste, context and sanctity, and the dalang must command

all three plus Kawi [SRC: SRC_00157, p. 7] [SRC: SRC_00157, p. 304]. The written strata are two

distinct languages owned by two distinct peoples and the page keeps them apart: Old Balinese, the

language of the island's own inscribed stones such as the Manukaya stone [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-62],

and Kawi, Old Javanese, which arrives with the Javanese literary stratum [SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-31]

and whose Kadiri Quadrate script form appears in the island's rock-cut inscriptions

[SRC: SRC_00251, p. II-33]. The Inscription trade is where a player learns to read either of them.

Anchor boundary, recorded rather than smoothed over: the header block names the 914 CE Blanjong

pillar as the region's attested first-writing anchor, while the harvest supplies a dated Old

Balinese royal inscription from Sukawana in AD 882, thirty-two years earlier [SRC: SRC_00251,

p. II-54]. Both are the record's own evidence and Section 14 resolves neither — the anchor question

belongs to the header block's owner, and the divergence is written down here so a later pass

inherits it instead of silently correcting one of the two.

Bronze casting — carried, but not as an eleventh trade

The gamelan is cast rather than smithed into shape, and the registry has no founding trade, so the

craft rides Trade 3's metallurgy and SQ7's music-theory line jointly rather than claiming a slot of

its own. Copper-tin alloy is forged and cast into keys and gongs, and the instruments are then tuned

in deliberately mistuned pairs so that the difference between them produces the ombak, the beat-note

shimmer that is the ensemble's signature [SRC: SRC_00157, p. 319-320] [SRC: SRC_00157, p. 316-317].

The mistuning is engineered, not tolerated: the shimmer is wave interference produced on purpose by

a maker who knows what interval will produce it [SRC: SRC_00157, p. 316-317]. Playing the result is

its own skill — two players interlocking on- and off-beats to share one figure in kotekan, each note

damped on the knuckle, every phrase landing against the colotomic gong cycle [SRC: SRC_00157,

p. 313-317] — and that half belongs to SQ7 and to Section 13's performance seed, carried by Kadek

Astawa (CHAR_0027). Section 14 owns only the making: the alloy, the casting, and the tuning

decision, which is the point at which a bronze-caster's craft and an acoustic result are the same

act.

Section-scope notes

No surface above is typed to a questline stage or a quest_type at page grain. The harvest raises

mint flags on the blade-appraisal, the Tumpek Landep observance and the bajra masterwork, and no

ratified quest_type vocabulary exists to receive them; the page therefore describes what the player

does and leaves the typing to the ruling. No named legendary blade is minted here — Section 6

reserves the region's pusaka keris line for the build pass, and the page adds no name to it. No

trade home base roots in Bali; the detailed home-base content FEEDs the trade registries as the

cascade reaches Ch 7, Ch 15, and Ch 27.

The vocabulary this section introduces takes Section-17 glossary entries so localization does not
