Khmer myth / folklore for angkor_khmer (Region Page 4) — L1/L2/L3 lanes + care landscape

Research pack for the CH_05 SPREAD excursion region page (sites: kra_traverse, angkor_wat,

bayon_taprohm, west_baray, myson_champa). Deep-research, khmer_myth_care lane.

Scope note. This is grounding for the L1 (playable) / L2 (investigatable substrate) / L3 (metaphysical-as-real,

never declared) lanes, plus the combat-candidate and care landscapes. Every claim carries a source. Contested

claims are marked CONTESTED; fringe claims are marked REFUSED with the reason. The BINDING rulings from CH_05.md

are honored throughout: communities are never combat targets (§17.1); antagonists route through the

apparatus/broker and ward-objects; anti-fringe (Angkor built by the Khmer, real archaeology, no lost-race framing);

reveal ceiling (CH_05 is pre-Ch-38 — no House-of-Velheim who-frames); do-not-invent (chapter/numerical/naming

canon is Josh's — I derive, cite, or mark UNRESOLVED). The Champa care ruling (Josh 2026-07-20): formal ELEVATED

scoped to west_baray combat-staging + myson_champa sanctuary + the modern-Cham-communities block; combat ceiling

unchanged; a Cham-source grounding obligation attaches to those surfaces (covered in §10-11 below).

What CH_05.md already commits (so this pack does not re-invent it): the leg's boss is the fictional

collapse-monetizing devaraja-court official (BE_0005_S4) plus the roused temple-guardian CONSTRUCTS

(dvarapala / seven-headed naga-balustrade / yaksha — ward-OBJECTS, never the deities). Mahakala, the Khmer naga,

the neak ta/arak, and Po Nagar are examined and deliberately LEFT protective. The krasue/ap is an L2 folklore

TOUCH (not a boss), its true cognate the Ch-4 Balinese leyak, LINK_0186. This pack deepens the substrate behind

those commitments and surfaces additional candidates for the page author / Josh to rule on — it does not author

new bosses.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. The Churning of the Ocean of Milk (Samudra Manthana) — L2 substrate + L3 connective tissue

The single most load-bearing Angkor Wat motif for this page. CH05_B07 already has the protagonist "walk and read"

the Churning bas-relief; the water-restoration baray puzzle (CH05_B09) rhymes with it thematically.

myth: the devas (gods) and asuras (demons) cooperate-and-compete to churn the primordial milk-ocean and extract

*amrita*, the elixir of immortality. The story appears in the Bhagavata Purana, the Mahabharata, and the Vishnu

Purana. [SRC: Britannica, "Samudra Manthana / Churning of the Ocean of Milk", britannica.com/topic/churning-of-the-ocean-of-milk]

retelling of the myth in the world. [SRC: Wonders of Cambodia, "The Churning of the Ocean of Milk", wondersofcambodia.com;

Asisbiz, "Angkor Wat bas-reliefs — the churning of the ocean of milk", asisbiz.com]

around the mountain; 88 devas and 92 asuras (counts as commonly reported at the relief) grasp Vasuki's coils

and pull alternately. Vishnu stands at the center stabilizing the mountain (in his Kurma/tortoise avatar

beneath it in the fuller iconography). Apsaras (celestial dancers) rise from the churned, frothing waves.

[SRC: Britannica; Wonders of Cambodia; Beyonder, "The Story of Samudra Manthan — Depiction on Angkor Wat", beyonder.travel]

turtles, and naga, some sliced in two by the churning action near the rod; above, apsaras emerge — "beauty born

from cosmic struggle." At the two ends the asura leader is often identified with Ravana-type figures and the

deva side with Hanuman-adjacent figures in the Khmer reading. [SRC: yatrikaone.com photo captions,

"Samudra Manthana bas-relief depicting Ravana and the asuras... / Hanuman and the devas..."]

L3 use (never declared): the Churning is a legible cosmological rhyme for the game's held-catastrophe / turning

theme — cooperation-and-struggle produces both poison (halahala) and nectar (amrita); "the water turned back to

the fields" (baray restoration) is a diegetic echo of the churning-sea, not a stated metaphysics. Keep it as

sensation/parallel, never as a spoken reveal.

Care: the relief is on a LIVING, actively-worshipped temple (see §9). It is "referenced not reproduced" per

CH_05.md — read, walked, honored; never desecrated or looted. The deities in it (Vishnu, the devas) are portrayed

as the tradition holds them, never fought.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Naga lineage — the Cambodian naga-princess origin story (L1 quest-hook / L2 substrate / L3)

The naga-princess founding legend is the deepest, most identity-load-bearing Khmer myth for this page. It exists

in two registers that scholars treat as the same legend: the pre-Angkorian Funan "Kaundinya-Soma" version

(recorded by Chinese envoys) and the living Cambodian folk version "Preah Thong and Neang Neak."

named KAUNDINYA received divine instruction in a dream to take a magic bow from a temple and sail east; he

defeated (or subdued) a NAGA PRINCESS named SOMA (Chinese: Liuye, "Willow Leaf"), daughter of the Naga king;

she married him and their lineage became the royal dynasty of Funan; his capital was Vyadhapura. [SRC: Wikipedia,

"Preah Thong and Neang Neak"; Wikipedia, "Queen Soma"; Britannica/Coedès tradition]

romantic telling she is a naga princess who, with her attendants, takes human form to play on the shore; Preah

Thong follows her by holding the hem of her garment; her father the Naga King blesses the union and, in the most

cited motif, DRINKS/SWALLOWS the waters covering the earth to reveal dry land as a dowry — the symbolic creation

of the habitable kingdom of Cambodia. [SRC: Mythlok, "Preah Thong and Neang Neak"; Cambodia Lifestyle, "The Legend

of Preah Thong and Neang Neak"; Archaia Creations, "The Legendary Queen Neang Neak"]

foreign prince — "she was the ultimate source of his legitimacy, the mother of the nation." The Khmer are, in

this telling, "children of the naga." [SRC: theharikumar.com, "Kaundinya, Soma and the Creation Story of Cambodia";

Archaia Creations]

marriage — e.g., the groom holding the bride's scarf/sash in procession echoes Preah Thong holding Neang Neak's

garment. This is living, everyday tradition, not dead myth. [SRC: Wikipedia, "Preah Thong and Neang Neak";

Cambodia Lifestyle]

CONTESTED (historicity): the Kaundinya-Soma / Funan foundation is a LEGEND, and the wider "Indianization" it

encodes is a live scholarly debate — Coedès's older "Indianized states" diffusion model has been substantially

revised by Vickery and others toward local agency and two-way exchange (Khmer as authors, not passive recipients).

Present it as a foundational myth and identity-charge, NOT as literal dynastic history. Note: a Dec-2022 aDNA study

of a protohistoric individual at Angkor Borei (early Funan) found substantial (~40-50%) South Asian ancestry,

which supports early South-Asian/local interaction — lending some material backdrop to the exchange the legend

mythologizes, without validating the literal story. [SRC: Wikipedia, "Preah Thong and Neang Neak" citing the 2022

Angkor Borei aDNA study; Vickery, "Society, Economics, and Politics in Pre-Angkor Cambodia"]

Care: the naga and the naga-princess are REVERED, protective, foundational — deliberately LEFT (never a slain

trophy), consistent with CH_05.md. This legend is a quest-hook / lore-reward candidate, never a combat target.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. The naga in Khmer cosmology — the seven-headed balustrade, causeway, rainbow bridge (L1/L2)

Directly supports the angkor_wat and bayon_taprohm site env (the "seven-headed naga-balustrade causeway"), and

the ward-CONSTRUCT combat framing (roused naga-balustrade as animated ward-object, never the deity).

ends — line temple causeways and moat-crossings. They mark the THRESHOLD between the secular world and sacred

temple space; the earliest seven-headed naga-balustrade causeway in Khmer architecture crosses a temple moat as

"passage into the divine realm." [SRC: HD Asian Art, "The Sacred Naga in Khmer Culture"; NCpedia, "Seven headed

serpent forming stone balustrade at Angkor Wat"]

rainbow"; the naga functions as the RAINBOW BRIDGE between the human and divine realms. Crossing the causeway

enacts the journey from earthly to divine. [SRC: HD Asian Art, "The Naga in Khmer Culture: Sacred Serpent of

Power, Protection, and Ancestry"; historyfuzz.com]

underworld, encircles and SUPPORTS the sacred space — mirroring its cosmic role of holding up the world. Odd

head-counts encode male energy / the "seven naga races." [SRC: HD Asian Art; Wikipedia, "Naga (Hinduism)"]

the baray, moats, and reservoirs. This is a clean L3 tie to the hydraulic-empire theme (naga = water-power =

the baray the official is hoarding). [SRC: Expat Life Cambodia, "Naga: Serpents of Khmer Waters and Eternity";

HD Asian Art]

Combat framing (matches CH_05.md): the naga itself is PROTECTIVE and LEFT. When the wards are perverted by the

corrupt faction, it is the animated STONE naga-balustrade ward-OBJECT that rouses — an object, not the deity, not

the faithful (HL_0003 / HL_0005). This is the rated-R "ward perverted → construct fights" pattern, distinct from

villainizing the naga.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Neak ta guardian spirits (and arak) — REVERED, LEFT (L2 substrate, L1 texture)

The living animist layer under Khmer Buddhism — the CH_05.md "neak ta and arak tutelary spirits (revered, LEFT)."

a village, rice field, forest, tree, stone, mountain, or temple. They protect inhabitants, ensure fertility,

and maintain social order; they are honored at dedicated shrines/statues with offerings. Often they are deified

ancestors or ancient earth-entities. Also called *mchas srok* / *maja tuk maja day* ("master of the water and

the land"). [SRC: Wikipedia, "Neak ta"; Khmer Culture, "Guardians of the Earth: Spirit Worship and Animism in

Rural Cambodia", khmerculture.org; Courtney Work, "Chthonic Sovereigns? 'Neak Ta' in a Cambodian Village",

The Asia Pacific Journal of Anthropology 20(1), 2019]

direct descendants via personal or lineage rituals. (CH_05.md pairs "neak ta and arak" correctly.) [SRC:

Wikipedia, "Neak ta"; Khmer Culture]

"spiritual landlords" of a place; neglect is thought to invite illness, crop failure, or misfortune. Neak ta

coexist WITH Theravada Buddhism as the older animist stratum ("the invisible layer that binds land, memory, and

spirit"). [SRC: Khmer Culture; Expat Life Cambodia, "Neak Ta: Guardians of the Khmer Earth"; Wonders of

Cambodia, "Spirit Houses in Cambodia"]

reads across cultures — a clean, honored L3 connective node (land-guardian family), NEVER a combat target.

Care: neak ta and arak are living-sacred, revered, protective — LEFT (CH_05.md). They are ambient reverence /

lore-reward / possible quest-helper texture, never villainized. A neak ta can be a WARNING or aid presence

(the land itself objecting to the official's desecration of the baray), which is a strong L1/L2 device without

crossing the care line.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. The Reamker tradition — L2 substrate, L1 performance texture

The Khmer Ramayana, carved on the Angkor walls the protagonist reads, and alive in dance/shadow-theatre.

distinctly Khmerized retelling. Prince PREAH REAM (Rama) quests to rescue his wife NEANG SEDA (Sita) from the

demon-king KRONG REAP (Ravana), aided by the monkey-general HANUMAN. [SRC: Wikipedia, "Reamker"; Asia Society,

recitation of the Ramayana in temples; Reamker scenes are carved in the Angkor Wat and Banteay Srei bas-reliefs.

[SRC: Bharat Ideology, "Reamker: The Cambodian Adaptation of the Ramayana"; esamskriti.com, "Ramayana in Cambodia"]

all-male masked dance-drama LKHON KHOL, and the sacred large-shadow-puppet theatre SBEK THOM (leather puppets

behind a firelit screen). Sbek Thom and Lkhon Khol are UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage; performances were

traditionally held at temples during religious festivals and carry ritual/spiritual weight — Khmer audiences

regard the characters as deities. [SRC: Wikipedia, "Khmer shadow theatre"; Asia Society, "Reamker"; UNIMA World

Encyclopedia of Puppetry Arts, "Cambodia"]

is complex/tragic (grandeur + pride + doom), not one-dimensional. [SRC: Wonders of Cambodia, "Characters of the

Reamker: Krong Reap"] See §6 for combat framing.

Care: the Reamker is a LIVING sacred-performance tradition. Use it as read-the-wall L2 lore and festival/dance L1

ambience. It is NOT protected from the fact that it contains a demon-king — see the golden-standard note in §6.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. Malevolent-being candidates for combat (golden-standard: real tradition-attested, never a living-sacred target)

Per the standing rated-R rule (a myth's OWN monster/demon is a boss — stage the fight) and §17.1 (communities and

the sacred never targeted; route antagonism through apparatus + ward-objects + the tradition's OWN condemned

beings). CH_05.md's Angkor LEG boss is already committed (the court official + ward-constructs), so these are

region-page candidates for OPTIONAL/ambient/L2 encounters and side-content — flagged with care lines. I am not

authoring new bosses; I present candidates and their care landscape for the page author / Josh.

Tradition-condemned malevolent beings (STAGEABLE as monsters, with care):

night for blood and raw flesh. Cambodian *Ap*; Thai *Krasue*; Lao *Kasu*; cognate to the Ch-4 Balinese leyak,

the Malay penanggal, the Filipino manananggal (LINK_0186, parallel-independent viscera-witch motif). Understood

as karmic punishment / moral corruption (a woman cursed after death for witchcraft or grave wrongdoing); the

body must rejoin before dawn or die — a built-in vulnerability communities exploit with thorny barriers.

[SRC: Wikipedia, "Krasue"; BudgetPixel, "Mythical Creatures from Cambodian Folklore"]

leg boss). Hard line: suspicion is NEVER routed onto a named or living person, and the kru khmer (Khmer folk

healers) and the community are protected. The being is faced as folklore condemns it — never as a slur on

women or a real village. Note the Khmer Rouge suppressed this folklore; the first post-KR Cambodian feature

film was the Ap horror film "My Mother Is Arb" — the being's revival is itself a marker of cultural recovery,

a care-positive framing. [SRC: Wikipedia, "Krasue"; scribd doc on Cambodian ghosts/folklore]

care line:

only their ANIMATED, ward-perverted CONSTRUCT form is fought (already CH_05.md's BE_0005_S4 pattern).

mythic villains — a legitimate boss/adversary class under the rated-R rule (a myth's own demon is a boss).

[SRC: Wonders of Cambodia, "Krong Reap"; Wikipedia, "Reamker"]

ganjang / Naga Padoha / court-official-constructs and did NOT open a Reamker-yeak boss. Recommend treating a

Reamker yeak as, at most, an L1/L2 shadow-theatre/festival SET-PIECE or an optional arena-echo, and flag any

promotion to a real boss for Josh (naming + myth-combat-canon call). Do NOT invent a named Reamker-boss here.

and Khmer belief (fed at Pchum Ben, the ancestors'/hungry-ghosts festival). More a pitiable/obstacle presence

than a villain; a candidate for ambient dread / a to-be-released-not-slain encounter (rhymes with the "endure

and settle, not slay" register used for Naga Padoha). [SRC: BudgetPixel, "Cambodian Folklore"; Wikipedia,

"Ghosts in Thai culture" for the shared Preta motif]

living belief; usable as ambient L1/L2 folklore encounters, condemned beings faced as tradition holds them.

[SRC: BudgetPixel; Facebook/krudreally, "Ajakrongk Pret"; note: lower-confidence popular sources — treat these

as texture leads, verify against an ethnographic source (Ang Choulean) before any canon promotion]

Protective / revered — the DELIBERATELY-LEFT list (never villainized, matches CH_05.md §"Mahakala... LEFT"):

is fought, never the deity. [SRC: CH_05.md; HL_0005]

Golden-standard summary for the page: FEED the malevolent-boss/monster appetite from the tradition's OWN condemned

beings (ap/krasue as an L2 touch; the perverted ward-CONSTRUCTS as the leg-boss; optionally hungry-ghost/pret

ambient dread and a Reamker-yeak as a bounded set-piece), and NEVER from the protective/revered class. Route all

human antagonism through the fictional collapse-monetizing court official + broker + court/military apparatus.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. Theravada transition context at ~1200 (era grounding — L2)

CH_05.md sets the excursion "dead-center on Angkor's imperial peak ~1113-1218." The religious layering at that

exact moment matters for authenticity — it is a Hindu → Mahayana → (emerging) Theravada palimpsest.

associated with funerary/Vishnu symbolism). [SRC: Britannica, "Angkor Wat"; Smarthistory, "Angkor Wat"]

face-towers), Ta Prohm, Preah Khan, hospitals, rest-houses, and roads; famed for the ethos that "the king

suffered his subjects' ills" (the Say Fong hospital-edict sentiment). His reign is the excursion's Buddhist

register. [SRC: Wikipedia, "Jayavarman VII"; cambodgemag.com, "Jayavarman VII: The Savior King"]

movement — spread Theravada (Pali, Sinhala-derived) Buddhism among ordinary Khmer, emphasizing personal piety,

meditation, and monastic simplicity over the elaborate priesthoods and royal cults of Hinduism and Mahayana.

From the late 13th c. onward Angkor Wat itself was progressively re-appropriated for Theravada worship, which

continues today. Theravada has been the Cambodian state religion since ~13th c. (except the Khmer Rouge years).

[SRC: Yale MacMillan Center, "The Introduction of Theravada Buddhism to Angkor, c.13th-16th c."; Britannica,

"Cambodia — The decline of Angkor"; Wikipedia, "History of Buddhism in Cambodia"]

TIMING NUANCE for a ~1200 setting (important for authenticity): at ~1200 the STATE religion is still Jayavarman

VII's Mahayana (with the older Hindu/Vaishnava stratum very present); the Theravada groundswell is EMERGING /

grassroots, not yet dominant, and Zhou Daguan's ~1296 account already describes Theravada monks widespread. So a

~1200 Angkor should read as Mahayana-royal + Hindu-substrate + Theravada-rising, NOT as fully Theravada.

[SRC: Zhou Daguan, "A Record of Cambodia" (~1296), background texture only; Yale MacMillan; Britannica]

Do-not-invent flag: the precise era label (1200 vs 1218 etc.) is chapter/numerical canon; CH_05.md already fixes

the window "~1113-1218." Use it; don't re-date.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8. Care landscape — what is LIVING-SACRED vs stageable

The core care map for the page. "Stageable" means it can appear/be interacted with authentically; it does NOT mean

combat unless it is a tradition-condemned malevolent being (§6).

LIVING-SACRED (honor; reference-not-reproduce; never desecrate/loot; never combat-target):

after its late-12th/13th-c. shift from Vishnu to Theravada Buddhism it has served continuous Buddhist worship

and pilgrimage to the present; visitors today see resident monks and nuns worshipping. It is NOT a ruin. [SRC:

Wikipedia, "Angkor Wat"; Britannica, "Angkor Wat"; angkorwatadventures.com, "The Religious Transformation of

Angkor Wat"] → CH_05.md's "protected living sacred site referenced not reproduced, honored space not a

loot-arena" is exactly right. The env should show active worship (incense, saffron robes, offerings), not empty

archaeology.

pilgrimage landscape; Ta Prohm's foundation stele records ~80,000 people serving the temple (tens of thousands

of servants/dancers) — a real institution, its people HOSTS not targets. [SRC: Wikipedia, "Ta Prohm";

can be an aid/warning presence; never a target.

regarded as deities (§5). Stage as performance/festival ambience; heroes never targets.

is continuous to today (§10-11). ELEVATED care per the Champa ruling.

STAGEABLE (authentic to portray; combat only where §6 permits):

Reamker's demon-king/yeak as a bounded mythic-villain set-piece (flag any real-boss promotion).

combat vector, never the deities/faithful.

antagonism, an individual disgracing his office, not the office/community.

apparatus, neither people a villain-race.

CONTESTED scholarly framings to carry as CONTESTED (never flatly asserted):

narrower / a cult of the "god who is king" or a specific royal linga-cult, NOT a claim that the living king was

a god. CH_05.md already carries this as scholarly-contested (Kulke/Vickery); the official EXPLOITS a claim the

faith does not require. [SRC: Kulke, "The Devaraja Cult"; Vickery, "Society, Economics, and Politics in

Pre-Angkor Cambodia"; CH_05.md §"Protected-chapter combat framing"]

the Greater Angkor Project (Fletcher, Evans, et al.) resolved via remote-sensing that the baray/canal works

were BOTH ritual AND hydraulic, and that Angkor's decline was tied to 14th-15th-c. monsoon MEGA-DROUGHTS and

the system's over-extended scale — never primitivism. [SRC: Greater Angkor Project; Buckley et al. 2010 on the

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

9. The 1177 Khmer-Cham war (ELEVATED west_baray combat-staging grounding)

Grounds the west_baray "two-peer river-and-land set-piece" at full mature intensity (combat ceiling UNCHANGED per

the Champa ruling), staged between two HONORED peer-civilizations.

Champa. The naval battle is famously carved on the BAYON and BANTEAY CHHMAR galleries — among the most detailed

depictions of Angkor-era warfare, showing Khmer and Cham war-boats (the Cham identifiable by lotus-petal helmets)

cambodgemag.com; Bayon relief scholarship]

Staging guidance (from CH_05.md + the ruling): a full-intensity naval-and-riverine set-piece; BUT combat routes

through the court-and-MILITARY apparatus of both sides, never the Khmer or Cham CIVILIANS, temple servants, or

faithful; neither the Cham fleet nor the Khmer defenders is a "villain-race" — mutual dignity between peers. Care

= weight and authenticity (show the war's real cost), never omission and never a genocidal frame.

[SRC: Wikipedia, "Po Nagar"; vinpearl.com / vinwonders.com festival coverage]

Care: My Son and Po Nagar are VENERATED LIVING sites (reverence, not ruins). The Champa is carried at ELEVATED

attention as a living minority. Reference-not-reproduce; honor the mother-goddess; the Cham are the war's other

honored peer, met with dignity through a Cham host.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

11. Cham grounding II — the fall of Champa + modern Cham communities (ELEVATED modern-Cham-communities block)

Discharges the "1471 fall + a modern living-Cham reference" part of the grounding obligation. HANDLE WITH ELEVATED

CARE — this runs into genocide history; per CH_05.md the Khmer-Rouge trauma stays OUT of the ~1200 era (witness-

depth or routed around, never spectacle, never anachronistically imported). The material below is BACKGROUND for

authorial care and for any modern-Cham-communities block, NOT for staging inside the 1200 excursion.

Do-not-invent flag: any modern-Cham-communities block is CANON-ADJACENT (it asserts framing about a living people

and a genocide). Recommend the page author route the STORY antagonism (per §17.1) through apparatus/broker/state,

present the Cham as a living, surviving, dignified people, and flag any contested framing choices for Josh.
