Trade Presence Briefs — Slice First Half, CH_02 through CH_07

CANON SUBORDINATION — this document is PROPOSAL-TIER: it serves canon and never outranks it.

Status: PROPOSAL-TIER. Slice trade-presence lane, chapters CH_02 through CH_07 (regions flores_island,

bali, sumatra_java + angkor_khmer, sri_lanka, south_india). This document authors TRADE PRESENCE BRIEFS

only. It mints no quest id, no registry row, and no gate content. The 120 mastery quest gates

(Q_TR1_NEO … Q_TR10_MGS) are a banned surface for this lane: the 119 unauthored gates stay banned

behind the B3 exemplar's Josh grade, and docs/proposals/TRADE_GATE_EXEMPLAR_Q_TR6_NEO.md is read-only

register reference here. The Ch-2 Tailoring hook that exemplar already carries is cited and never

re-authored.

Router note per SUBAGENT_CONTRACT clause 2: harness/route.py has no work-kind entry for a trade-presence

brief. The nearest entry, registry, was run (`python harness/route.py registry --chapter CH_07 --region

south_india`) and its read-order discipline was followed — the owning T1 first, then the spine node, then

the structured layer. The canon nodes actually read in full are named in the DERIVATION block below.

NOT DERIVED (authored judgment, and why it had no canon home):

prose but no T0_Gather_Node row, no T0_Flora_Registry row and no T0_Mineral_Registry row exists for

either region, so the candidate lines are proposals against a page line rather than realizations of a row.

Each candidate names the page line it stands on and the blocking dependency it cannot clear.

Ch 21)." The chapter is the arc's survival opener and its craft register is correspondingly thin — which is

canon working correctly, not a gap.

Two readings the rows themselves force. GN_0007's own notes cell binds it to the Ch-3 naga-tana win, so it

sits on a Ch-2 site but is a Ch-3 reward — a chapter/site split a later pass should read from the notes cell

and not from the site anchor. And GN_0009 and GN_0010 are the chapter's only Mining-tagged surfaces, which is

what makes TRADE_02 AMBIENT here rather than absent, on gather-tag evidence alone with no craft behind it.

One row-level mismatch is recorded rather than corrected: GN_0005 yields rattan whose own registry note calls

it "caci shield material" and whose T0_Flora_Registry FL_0002 trade_uses_note reads

"tailoring/engineering (caci shield, cordage, weave); crafting" — yet the row's tool_or_trade_required is

Herbalism_T4. The gather row and the flora row disagree about which trade owns the rattan. This is a

finding for the director, not an edit.

The chapter's Trade-6 gather surface is GN_0004 at manggarai_village_edge, which is a CH_02 site row.

The Tailoring seat is at Ch 3 and the cotton node is at the Ch-2 village edge — a real seam a later pass

should read deliberately, since CH_02 L9 states "the Manggarai village-society opens fully at Ch 3."

Vendor and exchange moments

character, proverb puzzle, Todo character, two caci combats, contract transformation and the exit — checked

one by one, there is no craft or trade beat for the loom to point at … A later pass that gives Ch 3 a craft

beat should move these rows onto it." Twenty-two dialogue rows carrying TRADE_06_TAILORING_SEED currently

point at no beat.

Absent at CH_03

and it is the closest thing in this chapter to a Trade-1 surface — but the protocol is authored as familiar

CH_04 — Bali (region bali)

No trade home base. CH_04 L256: "trades no home base; substrate seeds only — Blacksmithing through the keris

smithing … and Engineering through the subak water-temple works (TRADE_08, joined to CH04_B05), both ahead of

their home bases (TRADE_03 Blacksmithing at Ch 7, TRADE_08 Engineering at Ch 27)."

Bali is the densest craft page in this half of the slice. Its §14 runs roughly 260 lines and expresses four

trades, two of which it flags as page-side substrate rather than spine joins — bali.md §14: "The spine types

only two of these as CH_04 trade joins — TRADE_03 through the keris smithing and TRADE_08 through the subak

works — so the Herbalism and Inscription entries below are page-side region substrate, flagged as such."

This brief keeps that flag.

Ambient craft presence

corrosion-resistant nickel alloy, then etched with a citrus-and-arsenic preparation" [SRC_00157 p.152-153],

and the pamor is "a named vocabulary, not decoration: roughly 116 distinct designs" [p.152-156].

GN_0013 is the ONLY Culinary_Arts_T7-tagged gather row in the entire 24-row registry. GN_0015 is the

chapter's cleanest trade chain: a Mining-tagged placer that the row's own note routes into the Blacksmithing

craft the page authors, which is exactly the Trade-2-feeds-Trade-3 interdependence T1_Trades_Master §9 (L266)

declares.

The Trade-4 gather layer the page describes is broader than the one rowed node. bali.md §14: "households

keeping their own herb gardens as living drugstores so the common preparations are gathered at the door

rather than bought … That gives the trade its region-scope gather layer without inventing a node: the

household garden, the terrace margin, and the offering botanicals Section 2 already stages." Only the last of

those three has a row.

No trade home base on either page. CH_05 L283: "trades no home base here; substrate seeds only — Mining

through the Borobudur andesite stone-construction, Blacksmithing through the keris tradition, and an

Engineering echo through the Angkor baray hydraulics." angkor_khmer.md L927-930 (§14): "none roots on the

excursion (it is a there-and-back waypoint, no returnable home)."

This is the widest-expressing chapter in the slice. sumatra_java.md §14 opens: "the seven this region

expresses are TRADE_02 Mining … TRADE_03 Blacksmithing … TRADE_04 Herbalism … TRADE_05 Alchemy … TRADE_06

Tailoring … TRADE_08 Engineering … and TRADE_09 Inscription," with the same flag discipline as Bali —

"Section 13's typed trade line names Mining, Blacksmithing and Engineering as the chapter's spine-side seeds;

everything below those three is page-side region substrate."

Ambient craft presence — the anchor (sumatra_java)

region's full trade, not a seed: a bark book is made from a felled tree to a finished object in steps the

corpus attests individually, and each step is a playable operation with a real material reason behind it."

The chain is stock (inner bark of Aquilaria malaccensis, FL_0019's sibling species in the region), scrape,

dry, level, polish with Ficus ampelas leaf abrasive, fold and mallet-break into a concertina "that can run

to sixteen metres in a single sheet," then fix the ink-ground with rice-water [SRC_00226 print p.65-67].

The ink is its own sub-craft — Manggistan soot (baja) bound with dammar and albumin [SRC_00158 p.171].

travel method, these are the chapter's Trade-10-adjacent surfaces, though neither is typed as a teacher.

Three row-level readings, each recorded and none corrected.

its own notes cell explaining the blank yield: "fauna yields live in T0_Creature_Roster (out of the

flora/mineral material-spine scope). yields_ref left blank by design." That is the honest shape of a Trade-10

gather surface under the current material spine.

craft there: "this is a Toba caldera highland tradition and the craft bench and its gather round seat at

samosir_highlands. It is not routed to merapi_slopes — that zone is traversal-only, and the source's own

Merapi is the Minangkabau sacred mountain of West Sumatra, a third peak distinct from both Java's Mt Merapi

and Gunung Marapi." The gather row and the craft bench are in different zones by canon design; a trade lane

reading the row alone would put the Alchemy bench in the forbidden place.

to "Trade 2 Mining — the Angkor sandstone-and-laterite quarry-and-canal transport." Both readings are

defensible (extraction is Mining, ashlar-cutting is Engineering) and the rows pick one without saying so.

The Alchemy craft the page authors has NO gather row of its own: no saltpetre node, no charcoal node, and the

only sulphur node sits in the forbidden zone. sumatra_java.md §14 also stages two timed gather beats with no

ingot, because carbide-forming elements present in minor amounts microsegregate and produce the banding, and

it is therefore likely that wootz Damascus blades with damascene patterns could be produced only from ingots

supplied by those regions of India whose ore deposits carried the appropriate impurities [SRC_00224]. In

other words the ore source sets the ceiling, the crucible sets the composition, the heat treatment sets the

matrix and the smith's cutting angle sets the pattern. That is four separable, real, teachable levers for the

Trade-3 home base, and none of them is invented." south_india.md L1154-1162 (§14) restates the four levers as

the home-base content and adds: "Book-of-Trades entries follow that chain rather than a generic smithing

ladder … because each lever is a separate thing to learn and a separate thing to fail at."

The metallurgy the levers act on. south_india.md L748-760 (§9): the steel is hypereutectoid, roughly one

and a half percent carbon; the microstructure is "bands of small cementite particles, generally around six

microns across, clustered along a band centreline, with a characteristic band spacing in the thirty to

seventy micron range, held in a matrix that varies with how the smith heat-treated the blade and is generally

pearlite"; "by manipulating the angle of the blade surface relative to the plane of the bands the smith

produces a variety of convoluted intersection patterns, which polishing and etching render as white carbide

against a nearly black matrix"; two named high-quality patterns are recorded, "a ladder and a rose"

The teacher. Muthu (CHAR_0049), CH_07 L235 — "the wootz-steel asari-lineage smith (the Trade-3 home)."

south_india.md L882-883 (§12) gives the register: "the Trade-3 home-base teacher; a technical craft register

whose worldview teaching surfaces through the material rather than beside it." That last clause is the

region's own realization of T1_Trades_Master §10.5 L307, "Worldview surfaces through DOING — the craft, its

tools, its moveset — never as a mandatory monologue or lecture." The trade-master register is

institutional-individual per §8.4: a named master, a fixed location, an identifiable lineage.

The craft-caste term and its double use, recorded not merged. south_india.md L977-980 (§4): "the

Character_Index records the same craft-caste term for the smith lineage of Muthu (CHAR_0049), and the

ethnography records it for the architecture-and-image expert. Both are attested uses of one craft term; the

page records the double use rather than merging the two offices or silently picking one." A Trade-3 lane must

not collapse the asari smith and the asari architect into one office.

The material chain. The chapter's Mining upstream is attested and un-rowed. south_india.md L771-776 (§9):

"iron ore of the impurity-bearing deposits (the Trade-3 ceiling material, and the reason the billet road

matters); granite (the Chola building material and the Trade-8 seed); laterite and temple polychromy as the

region's construction palette per the spine's asset anchors; the Deccan diamond field at Golconda as the

canonical high-value trade good weighed on the same scale as the steel." CH_07 L80: "Gathering — Ayurvedic

botanicals of the Western Ghats and ore for the crucible feed the gathering loop into the two home-base

The recipe row that already exists. T0_Recipe RCP_0002 — inputs iron;charcoal,

TRADE_04 Herbalism — full-depth presence

What the region can teach today, and what it cannot. south_india.md L1163-1169 (§14) is the whole shape:

"Trade 4 Herbalism — FIRST HOME BASE, teacher Vaidya Kandan (CHAR_0052), modern revisit pairing Ch 50. The

shelf substrate is the treatment lane: the prepared oils and their recipe, the herb-bag therapy, the

bone-setting and massage repertory, and the counter-applications, all of which are attested [SRC_00262]. The

pharmacopoeia itself — the six-hundred-plus plants of the canonical Ayurvedic corpus — is canon-named and NOT

on this shelf, so the gather table stays thin and the acquisition is Section 16's first priority. What the

region can already teach is the preparation and the application, which is the half of herbalism most games

The page's honest standing at §2 is blunter still. south_india.md L171-177: "The region-filtered shelf carries

This matters more than any other single fact in this document. The trade whose CVD-level teaching content is

named explicitly at T1_Trades_Master §10.4 L303 — "A player taking Trade 4 Herbalism instruction at Ch 07

South India learns the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita Ayurvedic frameworks" — has, at its own ancient

home, no plant list, no flora rows and no gather nodes.

The attested treatment lane, which is real and playable now. south_india.md L182-191 (§2): the training

oil recipe is "four parts gingili (sesame) oil, two parts castor oil, one part ghee, three herbs and three

other dried ingredients, decocted and applied after cooling," giving "maximum flexibility combined with

strength," with the preparation taking "days of cooking and decoction in the kalari's own kitchen, and because

traditionally prepared oils are expensive most students today use cheaper plain gingili" [SRC_00262]. The

second therapeutic form is the kili, "a cloth bag of specially prepared medicinal herbs dipped in heated oil

and applied to an injury" [SRC_00262]. And "the marma treatment texts are explicit that their subject includes

the oils, internal medicines and tablets given for injuries."

The counter-application, the region's signature healing interaction. south_india.md L1106-1111 (§13): "a

student is struck on a catch spot and freezes, and the revival is a sequence, not a potion: pressure at the

spot in the small of the back with the patient supported opposite, the rub down the sides, the lift under the

chin, the slap at the crown, the grip under the shoulders and the sharp lift and shake [SRC_00262]. NPC the

master as physician … Reward: the region's signature healing interaction and the Trade-4 treatment lane."

The teacher. Vaidya Kandan (CHAR_0052), CH_07 L235 — "the Ayurvedic-siddha herbalist (the Trade-4 home)."

south_india.md L896-897 (§12): "the Trade-4 home-base teacher; a medical register over a practical one." Also

The knowledge-that-heals-and-kills frame the chapter is built on. CH_07 L145-148 (CH07_B06): "learn the

hundred and seven marma points where the vital current can be mended or stopped, a craft the tradition holds

in one hand knowing the same knowledge heals and kills, and feel the question it asks of every learner: which

the protagonist will be." The chapter then answers the question with a person — CH_07 L164-168 (CH07_B10),

the marma assassin, "a healer who turned the marma map to murder," with the care line "never the healers or

the healing tradition itself." Trade 4's home base and the chapter's own antagonist are the same knowledge

pointed two ways, which is as clean a home-base thesis as the arc offers.

Reveal discipline the trade must respect. CH_07 L148 holds the perception register: "the marma map learned

as a craft at the Neophyte register — never a tier-6 vril-signature read per HL_0028; the vril substrate under

the anatomy stays L3, felt never declared." A Trade-4 surface that lets the player see the vital current

rather than learn its map would break the chapter's own hard-line binding (CH_07 L17).

The recipe row that already exists. T0_Recipe RCP_0010 — required_trade_ref TRADE_04,

required_station_class apothecary, chapter_gate_min CH_07, cross_trade_second_ref TRADE_05, source

"ELEMENTS_MATRIX_RECOVERED s4: 'Herbalism/Alchemy ladders (Poison & Life)'". It carries the Apothecary

compound's cross-trade pairing at the Herbalism home.

The learning register — the region's real contribution, recorded and not converted into gates

south_india.md L1175-1184 (§14) is the passage the whole twelve-level ladder at this home will hang off, and

it is quoted rather than paraphrased because it is doing structural work: "Learning here is readiness-gated by

a person's judgement rather than by a number. A student takes up no weapon until the master judges him

physically, spiritually and ethically ready [SRC_00262]. The lethal knowledge is taught last and given only to

students in whom the master has complete trust, because a practitioner's life and livelihood depended on it,

and it is taught fragmentarily and gradually [SRC_00262]. The master reads a student's temperament and that

reading determines whether he ever gains access to the secrets at all [SRC_00262]. Mapped onto the twelve-tier

quest-gate ladder, this says something the ladder needed: the gate is not a threshold the player crosses by

grinding, it is a person deciding, and the deciding is the quest."

This lane records that the substrate exists and stops there. The mapping onto specific gates is the banned

surface; the page has already written the mapping's shape and no gate content is authored, proposed or

implied here.

The spine's own grading ladder at CH07_B05 (CH_07 L140) is the same principle staged as play: "the guru grades

the protagonist up rung by rung through the standing forms and animal postures, the long staff and the curved
