CANON SUBORDINATION — this document is PROPOSAL-TIER: it serves canon and never outranks it.
The canon: the CVD · the T1 foundation docs · the T0 registries (registries/) · the spine
(docs/spine/CH_*.md) · the region pages (_source/02_Tier_2_Region_Pages/). Authority order:docs/DOC_MAP.md§ 0.
Canon served (structural — the registries this kit's canon rows live in, plus its chapter's spine node):

READ THAT CANON FIRST — open it and derive from it before you build anything from this document.
If this document disagrees with canon, CANON WINS and this document is the defect — fix the
document, never the canon. Nothing here is applied until it is ratified into canon.
PROPOSAL-TIER. This kit serves canon and never outranks it. It writes no registry row.
The law it obeys: docs/proposals/combat/KIT_SCALING_TABLE.md. The intelligence scale:
docs/proposals/combat/INTELLIGENCE_TIERS.md. The body it fights with is the bestiary
lane's: docs/proposals/bestiary/BESTIARY_ELEVATION_DOCTRINE.md and its sheets. This file
describes the FIGHT; it never restates the BODY. Authors no magnitude -- no damage, no
health, no timing, no coefficient. Those are Phase-5M's behind the tuning firewall.

Silhouette read. Something the size of a child that is not a child, at the edge of the lamp.
Opener (MHM-G10, the cheap lesson first). THE ECHO -- it says your last word back to you, in your own voice, from somewhere you are not looking. Nothing follows. It is free, it is the cheapest lesson in the chapter, and it establishes the one rule the whole encounter runs on: this thing is listening.
| phase | name | what it PUSHES (nothing pops) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | the edge of the light | it is at the boundary of what the player can see and it will not cross. Everything here is pressure, theft and mimicry; nothing is a killing blow. |
| 2 | inside the light | it has come in. Nothing from phase 1 stops -- the mimicry continues and gets better, because it has more of your voice now -- and the taking, the group press and the refusal-to-be-cornered arrive. |
| # | ability | phase | kind | body origin | tell shape | counter | element | lore ground + mechanism | note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Echo | 1 | physical | throat and jaw; the body stays hidden | your own last word, from the wrong direction | any | -- | -- | The opener. Physical -- a real animal capacity, and the tradition's own most-repeated claim about them. |
| 2 | Lamp-Edge Circle | 1 | physical | a low four-limbed gait just outside the light's fall | the light's edge moves and nothing crosses it | cover | -- | -- | Pressure with no attack in it. It teaches the player that the lamp is a resource with a boundary, which the whole Liang Bua descent then trades on. |
| 3 | Snatch-and-Vanish | 1 | physical | one long arm, from full extension at the light's edge | a hand enters the light before the body does | trigger_interrupt | -- | -- | Crop-raiding and taking, which is what the tradition actually attests. It takes FOOD and TOOLS, never a person, and never in phase 1. |
| 4 | Stone Throw | 1 | physical | an overhand throw from a crouch, using cave rubble | the crouch drops one shoulder back | dodge_only | -- | -- | They use what is on the floor. Nothing about this is supernatural and it is included precisely so the non-ordinary abilities below have something ordinary to stand against. |
| 5 | The Voice That Knows the Name | 1 | non-ordinary | the throat, shaping a word it should not have | it speaks in the voice of someone who is not in the cave | neutralize | none | LORE GROUND: attested Nage oral tradition per the row's own folklore_attribution_source -- hairy hominoids of AMBIGUOUS STATUS, explicitly DENIED to be spirits (Forth 2008, SRC lineage carried on CR_0010), whose defining reported trait is repeating human speech. MECHANISM, and it is ontological rather than elemental: the ambiguity IS the mechanic. The element family is none because the tradition claims no elemental character and inventing one would credit the community with a claim it does not make. What the vril substrate carries is the ambiguity itself -- a reading that comes back neither as a person nor as an animal, and the neutralize answer is to stop trying to resolve it and act on what is in front of you. | The care line lives here: the player never gets a debunk and never gets a confirmation. HL_0121 and the row's register bind this. |
| 6 | The Unreadable Return | 1 | non-ordinary | no body movement; the vril-trace itself | a Neophyte VRIL_TRACE read that comes back with two answers and will not settle | neutralize | none | LORE GROUND: the same attested ambiguity, CR_0010 cultural_care_register -- the taniwha treatment, never a loot monster and never a debunked superstition. MECHANISM: every other body in the chapter reads as ONE thing; this one reads as two and holds. It is the first time in the game the player's own perception returns an honest failure, and it is authored as a teaching beat for the Ch-10 protocol rather than as a frustration. | Deliberately NOT a tier-gated polarity or signature read -- the protagonist is a Neophyte in Ch 2 and the early-perception discipline binds. |
| 7 | The Taking | 2 | physical | both arms and the whole body weight, from inside the light | it enters the light and does not stop at the edge | parry_only | -- | -- | The tradition's own condemned edge -- child-snatching wild-folk -- staged as a real grab with a real answer. It is the reason this encounter has teeth and it is never softened. |
| 8 | Group Press | 2 | physical | three or four bodies at once, from three directions | two echoes overlap instead of alternating | cover | -- | -- | The tell is beautiful and free: when the mimicry stops taking turns, there is more than one. |
| 9 | Refusal of the Corner | 2 | physical | a vertical scramble up a karst face | it goes UP a wall the player cannot climb | dodge_only | -- | -- | It cannot be cornered and it cannot be exterminated. That is a design statement and a care statement in the same move. |
| 10 | The Cave Answers Back | 2 | non-ordinary | the chamber itself; the throat that starts it is never located | the echo arrives from every direction at once and the lamp gutters | trigger_interrupt | Air | LORE GROUND: INVENTED -- ours, and named as ours. No Nage account attests this and the kit does not pretend one does; it is our extension of the attested mimicry into a cave that has been listening for a very long time. MECHANISM: EG_0006's unlit karst volume is a resonant body, and vril-altered acoustics let a small throat drive the whole chamber -- Air is the family because the carrier is moving air and nothing else. The interrupt is to kill your own lamp and listen, which inverts the light-as-safety rule the encounter spent phase 1 teaching. | INVENTED and declared. The invention is OURS, never the tradition's claim -- the distinction the standing rule turns on. |
ELEVATED, AND NOT ELEMENTAL BY DEFAULT (KIT_SCALING_TABLE 3.1b). 3 of the 10 moves
above are non-ordinary and each names its element family, its lore ground and its
mechanism. The rest are a body doing physical things, and they are marked physical rather
than dressed up. An elevated kit is one that CONTAINS the non-ordinary; it is not one in
which everything glows.
| part | moveset subtraction on break | legibility gain | material the economy wants |
|---|---|---|---|
| the carried tool or food it has taken | The Taking (7) and Snatch-and-Vanish (3) both lose their point once there is nothing left to take, and the encounter falls back to pressure | the troop's approach angle changes visibly from converging to circling | nothing is harvested from the body. This kit has NO trophy, NO drop and NO carcass, and that absence is authored: CR_0010's register forbids the loot-monster reading outright |
| the lamp (the arena's part, not the body's) | losing it removes Lamp-Edge Circle (2) as a threat, because there is no longer an edge | the fight stops being about a boundary and becomes about sound, which is the state The Cave Answers Back (10) was built for | lamp oil, and the chapter's descent economy already meters it |
EG_0006 Unlit Karst Chamber -- ENEMY: enemy_usable = TRUE CONCEALMENT, and it is the body's home ground. PLAYER: it is also where the player's own light is a decision with a cost.EG_0005 Cave Pillar and Karst Column -- BOTH: COVER for the Stone Throw (4) and the pivot the Lamp-Edge Circle (2) is drawn around.EG_0007 Liang Bua Deep-Time Stratum -- CARE-BOUND, GEOMETRY ONLY: hard_blocked, protected_care_ref = HL_0007, enemy_usable = FALSE, attack_verbs = none. The protected type-site SHAPES this fight -- it is the floor nobody may dig, fight across, or damage, so the encounter is staged around it and the excavation is never a weapon and never collateral. This is the 16-row positional-affordance pattern applied to the one row in the chapter it matters most on.| channel | what the player sees or hears |
|---|---|
| posture | it stops moving on four limbs and stands, which is the moment the player's read of what it is becomes genuinely unstable |
| breath | the panting that was audible under the echoes stops |
| vocal | the mimicry switches from your last word to a whole sentence you said earlier in the chapter |
| opener | The Echo is retired as a free move; the Lamp-Edge Circle becomes the opener and the light's edge starts moving inward |
IT ENTERS from the dark side of the lamp and from below the player's eye line. IT RELOCATES vertically and through fissures, so it is never where it left. IT LEAVES upward and is never followed. WHAT IT DOES TO THE ARENA: it makes the lamp a variable. The Liang Bua descent has a light economy and this is the body that spends it.
THE FULL REGISTER, and it is load-bearing. CR_0010 carries HL_0002, HL_0121, HL_0003 and HL_0123, and its cultural_care_register is explicit: living Nage oral tradition, rendered with recognition depth, the taniwha treatment, NEVER a loot monster and never a debunked superstition. Four things this kit therefore does. (1) The Homo floresiensis resonance is AUTHORIAL ECHO ONLY -- it is never player-facing, never asserted as the hominin, and no ability, tell or line gestures at it. (2) The villagers' cave-burning extermination is NEVER replayed: ability 9 exists so that cornering and wiping them out is not available, and the encounter has no clear-the-cave state. (3) The ambivalent-to-menacing Nage edge is RESTORED rather than softened -- they raid crops and they take children, and abilities 3 and 7 stage that honestly, because a false idyll would be its own disrespect. (4) The being is ELEVATED and NOT ELEMENTAL: the tradition denies they are spirits, so nine of the ten moves are a body doing physical things and the non-ordinary content is the AMBIGUITY, which is what the tradition actually attests. Making them casters to satisfy a column would have been the inflation the calibration ruling forbids.
This kit is authored ONCE, at Fading. The five modulators of KIT_SCALING_TABLE section 4
express it across the ladder: active_ability_set grows upward through reserved follow-ups
on roots the player already learned, window_class tightens, answer_tree_depth prunes
toward the single true answer, hazard_concurrency rises with the arena rows above, and
phase_overlap interleaves the phase cycles. No second kit exists and no number here changes
with the tier.
