CANON SUBORDINATION — this document is PROPOSAL-TIER: it serves canon and never outranks it.
The canon: the CVD · the T1 foundation docs · the T0 registries (registries/) · the spine
(docs/spine/CH_*.md) · the region pages (_source/02_Tier_2_Region_Pages/). Authority order:docs/DOC_MAP.md§ 0.
Canon served (structural — the registries this kit's canon rows live in, plus its chapter's spine node):
T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry·T0_Character_Index·docs/spine/CH_09.md
READ THAT CANON FIRST — open it and derive from it before you build anything from this document.
If this document disagrees with canon, CANON WINS and this document is the defect — fix the
document, never the canon. Nothing here is applied until it is ratified into canon.
PROPOSAL-TIER. This kit serves canon and never outranks it. It writes no registry row.
The law it obeys: docs/proposals/combat/KIT_SCALING_TABLE.md. The intelligence scale:
docs/proposals/combat/INTELLIGENCE_TIERS.md. The body it fights with is the bestiary
lane's: docs/proposals/bestiary/BESTIARY_ELEVATION_DOCTRINE.md and its sheets. This file
describes the FIGHT; it never restates the BODY. Authors no magnitude -- no damage, no
health, no timing, no coefficient. Those are Phase-5M's behind the tuning firewall.

Silhouette read. A senior man in a scriptorium who has never had to raise his voice.
Opener (MHM-G10, the cheap lesson first). THE ROTATION -- two guards change post, on a count, in front of the player, and nothing else happens. Free. It is the fight: everything in phase 1 is a timing problem and this is the metronome.
| phase | name | what it PUSHES (nothing pops) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | the guard-gauntlet | the scriptorium's hired rotation and the manuscript cipher, at the same time. Stealth register, per the row. |
| 2 | the exposure | BE_0009's evolve-not-swap clause: it TIGHTENS THE GUARDS' FORMATION ROTATIONS AND SHRINKS THE GAPS -- and the row is explicit that phase 2 is A REAL FIGHT IN THE SCRIPTORIUM: the rotation closes the aisles while the evidence is still on the desk. |
| # | ability | phase | body origin | tell shape | counter | note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Rotation | 1 | two hired guards, changing post on a count | the post changes and the count does not | any | |
| 2 | The Timing Gap | 1 | the interval the rotation leaves | for two beats one aisle has nobody in it | neutralize | The row's own counter -- 'the guard rotation -> a timing-gap read'. Neutralize is the read. |
| 3 | The Aisle Sweep | 1 | a guard walking the stack range with a lamp | the light moves along the shelf faces | cover | |
| 4 | The Cipher, First Chain | 1 | the manuscript's own substitution | a letter form recurs where the language does not repeat | weak_point | The row states the cipher has TWO INDEPENDENT DECODE CHAINS, which is a no-dead-end guarantee written into the boss row. This is the first. |
| 5 | The Cipher, Second Chain | 1 | the same manuscript, through the binding's quire order | the gathering marks do not run in sequence | weak_point | The second chain. A player who cannot see the first can still solve the fight. |
| 6 | The Hoarded Press | 1 | the ledger press, holding what is not his | a shelf that is locked in a room that is not | any | |
| 7 | The Called Alarm | 1 | a guard's voice, once | a guard stops walking and looks up | trigger_interrupt | |
| 8 | The Senior's Word | 1 | his own authority, over his own staff | a scribe stops helping you without being told to | neutralize | |
| 9 | The Locked Range | 1 | the stack range's own end doors | the aisle you were going to use is shut | cover | |
| 10 | The Tightened Rotation | 2 | the same guards, on a shorter count | the post changes and the count is shorter | neutralize | MHM-G10's variant law: ability 1's root with the gap removed. |
| 11 | The Closed Aisles | 2 | the rotation, converging on the desk | the guards stop patrolling and start standing | cover | The row's own phase-2 words. The evidence is on the desk and the aisles are closing. |
| 12 | Brute Rush | 2 | a hired man's whole weight, in a narrow aisle | he fills the aisle instead of entering it | parry_only | The row's counter names 'a Brute stagger with the chapter's Brute weapon'. This is what it answers. |
| 13 | The Stack Press | 2 | a shelf range, pushed | a guard puts both hands on a shelf face | dodge_only | |
| 14 | The Two-Man Pincer | 2 | guards at both ends of one range | the lamps are behind you and in front of you | cover | PATTERN COUNTER: which range is currently single-ended is a state that only exists across the whole rotation cycle. |
| 15 | The Threatened Page | 2 | his hand on the evidence | he picks up a manuscript instead of stepping back | trigger_interrupt | The manuscripts are the chapter's, and losing one is a permanent cost. See the care read. |
| 16 | The Assembled Clergy | 2 | the room filling with people who outrank him | the scriptorium door opens and nobody comes in alone | any | win_condition = EXPOSE;PACIFY;REDUCE. The exposure is before the CLERGY, not before the player. |
| 17 | The Defence | 2 | his own account of himself, delivered well | he answers the accusation calmly and in detail | neutralize | PATTERN COUNTER: he is a scholar and his defence is coherent. The answer is which of the chapter's decoded entries contradicts which clause, which is a sequence read across the whole investigation. |
| 18 | The Monopoly Broken | 2 | the press unlocked, in front of witnesses | the shelf is open and people are reading | any | has_nonkill_path is unset on this row; the kit does not invent one, and the encounter's own designed ending is PACIFY -- see the care read. |
CLASS PURITY (tooth T5). Every move above is physical. No element family, no vril
mechanism, no non-ordinary affordance appears in this kit, because this being's own canon
row carries no hollow row, no lore home and nothing that elevates it. It is dangerous the
way the real animal or the real person is dangerous, engineered up until it reads at the
shipped combat camera. TIMID here would mean BORING-PHYSICAL, never insufficiently magical.
| part | moveset subtraction on break | legibility gain | material the economy wants |
|---|---|---|---|
| the rotation's count | The Rotation (1), The Timing Gap (2) and The Tightened Rotation (10) all resolve once the count is broken -- the guards fall back on individual judgement | the posts stop changing together | nothing harvested |
| the ledger press's lock | The Hoarded Press (6) and The Threatened Page (15) lose their leverage | the shelf stands open and stays open | nothing harvested -- the manuscripts are not loot and are never taken |
| his standing with the clergy | The Senior's Word (8) and The Defence (17) stop working | the scribes start helping again, visibly, mid-scene | the exposure record |

|---|---|
| posture | he stands up. He has been seated at a desk for the entire first phase and the moment he rises the guards stop patrolling |
| breath | his voice stops being quiet -- and it is the only time in the encounter it does |
| vocal | the scriptorium's own sound, the scratching of pens, stops |
| opener | The Rotation is retired; The Closed Aisles becomes the opener |
HE ENTERS by already being at his desk. HE RELOCATES only in phase 2, and only toward the evidence. HE LEAVES exposed. WHAT HE DOES TO THE ARENA: he closes it. The aisles narrow through phase 2 and the room he controls gets smaller as his authority does.
care_tier = elevated, target_type = corrupted_individual, awareness_category = FAMILY_BRIEFED. MUNDANE: a monopolist with hired guards. THE MANUSCRIPTS ARE NEVER DAMAGED AND NEVER LOOTED -- there is no ability in this kit that burns, cuts or takes one, on any difficulty, and the win is that a hoarded collection becomes readable. The Ethiopian Orthodox tradition is not the antagonist; one office-holder monopolising its texts is, and the exposure happens before the ASSEMBLED CLERGY, which puts the institution on the player's side. HL_0001, HL_0002, HL_0005 and HL_0007 bind through the environment rows, and the inner sanctuary is never entered.
This kit is authored ONCE, at Fading. The five modulators of KIT_SCALING_TABLE section 4
express it across the ladder: active_ability_set grows upward through reserved follow-ups
on roots the player already learned, window_class tightens, answer_tree_depth prunes
toward the single true answer, hazard_concurrency rises with the arena rows above, and
phase_overlap interleaves the phase cycles. No second kit exists and no number here changes
with the tier.
