supernatural/HOLLOW_LENS_SWEEP_2026-07-27.md
Read-only analysis, 2026-07-27, fourth sitting. Axis: run the Hollow through every roster lens that
speaks to it and name what each teaches, yielding a concrete recommendation per lens for the three
sub-forks — ADMISSION (class), NAME, REVEAL WINDOW.
Charter position this brief sits beneath (docs/proposals/REALM_DESIGN_PROGRAM.md §6.2): admit as an
OBSERVE/CONTAIN class outside the 33 species and the 22 familiar slots, "the Hollow" common with
"substrate-echo" as the class term, pure atmosphere pre-Ch-76.
Headline: the sweep CONFIRMS the admission position, SHARPENS the reveal position from one gate into
three, and RECOMMENDS AGAINST the naming position on three independent grounds — one of which is a
reveal-discipline argument, not an aesthetic one. Detail below; the synthesis is §7.
---
Recorded because this repo's most-repeated defect is an absence-claim from a search that could not
match. Every zero below is controlled.
Not a blank. The design is substantially specified across two sittings in
docs/proposals/systems/creature-system.md:
"unrendered" flickering aesthetic, a sigma-governed discoverable-but-arcane trigger (§17.13, no
1/8192 misery), documentation-opens-perception, reward is documentation and lore and a cosmetic
halo, zero combat power, explicitly outside the 33/22.
NEGATIVE VRIL CONGEALED INTO FLESH, wearing the eroded shape of something the depletion took. Its
canon anchor is the False Naga (Ch 6): the same negative-consciousness-occupying-a-vacated-space
mechanic, ambient and spontaneous rather than targeted. The etymology closes it — Cassius, cassus,
hollow.
a sealed sub-codex. A purify-versus-harvest integrity fork. Second spawn locus added: fresh Velheim
extraction scars and corruption seams.
33/22/offspring lines are untouched, including the sharp one: a Hollow is never TAME-status, so it
is outside the 22nd-slot binding-stone pool (T3_Creatures_Tameable §2.4) and can never be elevated
to legendary.
2026-07-13.
There is already a DRAFT registry: registries/T0_Hollow_Codex [DRAFT v0.1]/Sheet1.csv, one row,
HW_0001, fourteen columns (hollow_id, manifestation_designation, spawn_locus_type, region_id,
chapter_window, contain_verb, purify_harvest_fork, sigma_trigger_anchor, perception_gate,
reveal_tier, containment_reward, firewall_anchor, care_register, source_ref). The row reads
The Hollow (negative-vril blight), drain-deadzone, central_africa_congo, CH_39-CH_65, CONTAIN,
purify|harvest, tier-gated vril-sight, design-layer, standard care. Two columns are EMPTY —
sigma_trigger_anchor and, effectively, the reveal ladder, which is filled only with the flat token
design-layer. The reveal column exists and is unpopulated; that is the sub-fork sitting in the
schema waiting for this brief.
The single most useful sentence in the corpus for the reveal sub-fork, docs/spine/CH_60.md line 90:
thesis/Grand-Sage to Ch 77"
That is a THREE-GATE ladder, and the Hollow's spec has content mapping to all three tiers while the
charter's position names only one gate. This is the sweep's reveal finding and §6 builds on it.
The governing hard lines, verbatim from registries/T0_Hard_Lines [ACTIVE v0.2]:
protagonist's own collective consciousness reflected back. Reveal is not stated or foreshadowed in
any in-game content before Ch 76-77 across dialogue, journal entries, inscription content, NPC
exposition, environmental storytelling, art direction, music." Scope column: Ch1-75.
single canonical direct surfacing of the thesis in the 77-chapter arc."
forbidden.
Note for precision, so the brief does not overclaim: the charter's "pre-Ch-76" phrasing is CORRECT
against the HL_0044 floor — docs/spine/REVEAL_WINDOW_REALIGNMENT.md line 9 explicitly records that
HL_0044/HL_0112 were LEFT unchanged in the realignment because they are a FLOOR, not a held-window
label. The charter is not stale. It is UNDER-SPECIFIED: one gate where the canon supports three.
The search demonstrably matches, so the counts are real.
docs/spine + docs/proposals: 146 occurrences.Canon uses "hollow" as its established register word for the condition of being emptied by a
corrupt bargain — "the gift's vril runs hollow" (CH_02), "fought hollow" (CH_07), "the polo's
hollow register" (CH_02), "its hollowed oath" (CH_60), and constitutionally at HL_0014,
"Evil-path protagonist is hollowed not cartoonish."
BE_0002 "Rangku Wera, the Hollow Hunter" (CHAR_0008, Ch 2) — a named BOSS in the game's secondchapter, the survival-horror opener, one of the first bosses a player ever meets. It recurs at
CH_02 lines 61, 96, 229, 240 and in DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH's open D-RANGKU-PERSONA item.
the Hollow Retainer (Ch 60) — a Velheim forcing-mark entity, CH_60 lines 72, 131, 246, 264.So the charter's proposed player-facing name for the signature glitch-rare is already the epithet of
a Ch-2 boss and a Ch-60 entity, inside a corpus that uses the same word 146 times as an ordinary
adjective. §4 and §7 carry what this means.
A fixed-string search for sunyata, śūnyatā, shunyata, Ginnungagap, Duat, Nun and
"primordial chaos" was run across REALM_DESIGN_PROGRAM.md, creature-system.md and
ESOTERIC_GROUNDING.md. It returned MANY hits for "Duat" (12+, across the realm roster, the art
pipeline, the pilot plan) and ZERO for every void term. The matcher can match; the zero is real.
Meaning: no void-cosmology grounding exists anywhere in the corpus, and the Hollow's mythological
lineage is entirely UNCLAIMED. There is no prior art to contradict — but also no firewall yet
written, and §5 shows the highest-care realm on the road sits directly adjacent to the one void
tradition the Hollow must never claim.
docs/proposals/COMPARATOR_LENS_PROGRAM.md cell 15, verbatim: "Dread/tension register: every run and
designed lens is grim-epic, wry, cozy, or warm — nothing teaches horror-tension pacing for the
Hollow, rift spawns, the realm road, the R-17 bar." The proposed closer is the title-set "Alien:
Isolation + RE4 (2023) + Shadow of Mordor — dread register, enemy-as-pacing-instrument, adaptive
nemesis memory," landing as the proposed-new lens director-ai-emergent-dread.
That lens has NOT been run. This sweep is the Hollow-scoped substantive fill of cell 15, and §8
recommends it be folded into that lens's charter rather than left as a one-off.
---
What it teaches. The xenomorph is not an encounter; it is a TEMPO. Its value comes from three design
commitments that are all transferable and all currently unstated in the Hollow spec: it is
unkillable, so the player's verb is never resolution but management; it is unscheduled, driven by a
director rather than a spawn table, so the player can never bank a safe stretch; and it is
economically SCARCE relative to its psychological footprint — the fear does more work than the
appearances. The failure mode Isolation itself demonstrates in its back half is the exact one that
threatens the Hollow: an entity that appears too often converts from dread into a chore, and the
player's internal register flips from "I hope it isn't here" to "here it is again."
What it says about the Hollow. The Hollow's genuine function is atmospheric, not collectible. Its
strongest possible contribution to the arc is as an ambient instrument that makes deadzones FEEL
like deadzones without a single line of exposition — which is the exact register HL_0044 demands
anyway, since environmental storytelling is an enumerated reveal channel and atmosphere is what you
have LEFT once explanation is forbidden.
It also surfaces a real internal tension in the current spec, and this is the sweep's sharpest
admission finding. FU.2's CONTAIN-blight verb makes the Hollow a completionist COLLECT with a
purify/harvest fork, and §2.7 explicitly wants a community that "hunts and streams them." Collection
and dread are opposed instruments. The moment an entity becomes farmable, the player's relationship
inverts from avoidance to pursuit, and the dread the entity exists to produce is spent. Isolation is
the proof: the xenomorph survives as horror precisely because it cannot be collected, defeated, or
completed.
class row should carry a hard LIFETIME ENCOUNTER CAP (a small authored number across the whole
arc, not a farmable spawn rate), and the containment record should be SINGULAR — one sealed codex
entry, never a dex of Hollow variants. FU.3 already leans this way ("contained/purified into a
sealed record, never a living entry"); make it explicit and cap-bearing so the collect layer can
never inflate it later.
not read as a quest-log noun. A player calling it a system term breaks the register.
should carry NO codex entry, NO quest hook, NO NPC explanation — the documentation layer opens
only after the player has already been frightened, which is also exactly what
"documentation-opens-perception" (§2.7) already specifies, read in the correct order.
What it teaches. SOMA is the closest thematic sibling in the medium and nothing on the roster has
noticed. Its horror is not a creature; it is an ONTOLOGICAL question the player cannot escape —
what is a thing that has the shape and the memories of a person but is not that person, and what is
owed to it. Its creatures are people-shaped structures animated by the wrong process, and the game's
achievement is that you PITY them while they hunt you. It also refuses to resolve the question: the
coin-flip is never explained away, and the player carries the discomfort out of the game.
What it says about the Hollow. This is FU.1's design, stated by a shipped game: "it looks like a lost
thing and is filled with the wrong substrate" is very nearly SOMA's thesis sentence. The lesson that
transfers hardest is the AFFECT: SOMA's monsters are not scary because they are hostile, they are
scary because they are sad and wrong at the same time, and the player's guilt does the work. The
Hollow's purify-versus-harvest fork is a strong mechanism for exactly that guilt — purifying is a
mercy for the stolen shape, harvesting is a theft from a thing that already had everything taken.
SOMA validates the fork as the correct emotional instrument.
SOMA also teaches restraint about explanation, and this bears directly on the reveal fork: the more
the game explains what its creatures ARE, the less they weigh. The parts of SOMA that land hardest
are the ones it declines to gloss.
reward layer (documentation, cosmetic halo, prestige thread) is correct and firewall-safe; the
actual content is the conscience cost, which is already ratified design language
("collection with a cost of conscience," FU.2).
frightening. A name meaning "the thing that is not counted / not accounted for" beats a name
meaning "the empty thing."
explains the world; it need not explain every Hollow. Recommend the codex's post-reveal entry
gain a meaning, not an answer.
What it teaches. Subnautica manufactures its most reliable terror with almost no content at all: the
Void is a region where the floor drops away, the geometry stops, and the game simply removes
information. The dread is a function of ABSENCE plus a suggestion that the absence is inhabited. It
also teaches the single cheapest horror instrument in the medium — the sound of something large
where nothing should be — and the discipline of a boundary the player is allowed to approach and
warned against crossing without being walled.
What it says about the Hollow. This is the direct visual grammar for a vril-null deadzone. A deadzone
should not be a re-skinned area; it should be an area where the world's information budget DROPS —
less ambient audio, thinner particle life, reduced fauna density, the vril-sight overlay losing its
returns. That is a negative-space design and it is buildable with subtraction, which matters for a
solo build: the deadzone costs less to produce than the region around it, and it produces more
tension per asset than anything else on the road.
This is also where the vril-altered-physics doctrine expresses itself most legibly OUTSIDE the
realms, which is the charter's own stated reason for using the realm program as the forcing function.
T1_Vril §1 rules that vril ALTERS real physical law rather than suspending it, that vril effects and
real physical law compose emergently, and that density is what produces dimensional separation. A
deadzone is therefore a genuine physics statement, not a mood: it is the density floor, and the
Hollow is what stands up in it. The realms are the doctrine at maximum density; the deadzone is the
same doctrine at minimum. They are the two ends of one instrument and they should be authored as a
matched pair.
with no authored deadzone grammar is a monster in a normal field; the negative-space environment
is half the entity. Recommend the class row reference an Environment_Grammar (EG_) row so the
subtraction rules are wired rather than implied.
is gone is not a Grand Sage hint, it is the premise of the game. Only the CAUSE is windowed.
---
What it teaches. Hallownest is the medium's most complete negative-space cosmology: the Void is a
substance, an origin, an antagonist and finally the protagonist's own nature, and the game earns it
across dozens of hours without ever delivering an exposition scene. Two craft lessons transfer. The
first is that an absence-entity needs a CONSISTENT PHYSICAL LANGUAGE — the Void reads the same in a
tendril, a pool, a boss and a player character, so the player learns to recognize it without being
told. The second is the vessel idea: a shape made to CONTAIN something, valued precisely for being
empty, and horrifying because the containment fails. That is the Hollow's design in a sentence.
The realm program already claims this title at lens L-R7 (fading-court-realm), scoped to Hallownest
as the fairy realm's structural analog. The Hollow is the OTHER thing that title teaches and the
current scope does not claim it.
And here is the finding. The titular entity of that game is called THE HOLLOW KNIGHT — a vessel
filled with a spreading substrate corruption, which is the Hollow's design almost line for line.
Worse for the name, the adjacent genre's single most recognizable term is FromSoftware's HOLLOW and
HOLLOWING — the Dark Souls undead-degeneration state, and the corpus already sits beside FromSoft
because elden-ring is one of the five ALREADY-RUN comparator lenses. In an action RPG, "the
Hollow" is not a distinctive name. It is the genre's most generic available word for exactly this
concept, attached to two of its most famous entities.
entire celebrated game is built on the absence-entity, so the class is proven to carry weight far
beyond a rare-spawn easter egg.
the full recommendation, which also rests on an internal collision (§0.3) and a reveal argument
(§2.2).
that this is more satisfying than being told. Directly supports the held-depth position.
This is a lens-derived reveal finding and it is the strongest single argument in the brief.
FU.1's etymological closure is real and beautiful: the family's founder is Cassius, cassus, hollow,
and the blight his substrate throws off is the hollowing of the world. The corpus has already, over
146 uses, built "hollow" into its ambient register word for emptied-by-a-corrupt-bargain — the
hollowed hunter at Ch 2, the hollowed oath at Ch 60, the hollowed protagonist at HL_0014.
That 146-use field is LOADED AMMUNITION. At Ch 76 the player learns the patriarch's name is Cassius,
and every one of those 146 uses detonates at once in retrospect. That is precisely the octopus/Kasa/
Khan foundation model the design already names — meaning that lands backwards.
Naming the creature "the Hollow" SPENDS that ammunition early and loudly. It takes the game's
quietest, most diffuse register word and puts it on a hunted monster with a codex entry and a
community wiki page. The word stops being ambient and becomes a proper noun with a definition. The
Ch-76 click gets weaker in exact proportion to how memorable the creature is — and the creature is
designed to be the most memorable thing in the bestiary.
So the naming and reveal sub-forks are not independent. Keeping "hollow" OFF the entity and ON the
ambient register is the choice that preserves the retrospective payoff. This is a reveal-discipline
argument for a naming decision, and it is why the sweep recommends against the charter's opening
naming position rather than merely noting the collisions.
What it teaches. The Forbidden Lands are mostly EMPTY, and the emptiness is the content: long
silences between encounters, no ordinary enemies, no towns, a soundtrack that stays quiet so its
entrances land. The colossi are sixteen — a small, authored, capped number — and each one is an
event rather than an encounter. Critically, the game's emotional turn comes from the player slowly
realizing the hunt itself is the transgression, and the mechanism is that each kill VISIBLY costs
the protagonist something.
The realm program already claims this title at L-R4 (pilgrimage-traversal-and-awe) for the Ch 76
Approach. Its absence-and-cost lesson is unclaimed.
What it says about the Hollow. Three things. First, the capped, authored count is the model — sixteen
colossi, not a spawn table, and the cap is what makes each one an event. Second, the silence between
is the instrument; the deadzone's information subtraction (§1.3) is the same idea. Third, and most
usefully: the HARVEST branch of the purify/harvest fork should visibly cost the player something, in
the SotC register — the integrity system already carries the mechanism (a hardening act with an
integrity cost, FU.2), and the lens says make the cost SEEN, not just scored.
independent direction.
information. The player who harvested twenty Hollows and learns at Ch 77 what the shapes were is
the design's best possible outcome, and it requires no new content — only that the depth be held.
---
Framing first, because it determines the whole section. Per §0.4 the corpus has ZERO void-cosmology
grounding, so nothing here corrects an existing claim; this is a clean firewall being written before
the first line of concept art. Care is at the delegated bolder calibration: the tool is
RENAME/REFRAME, never removal, and care-tier inflation is itself a defect. The recommendations below
are therefore permissive where traditions have no living practitioners and specific where they do.
The governing fact from the realm roster: the void archetypes the Hollow could echo sit on realms
ALREADY ON THE ROAD, each with a ratified care position.
What it is. The primordial gap between Muspelheim and Niflheim; not evil, not inhabited, a
generative emptiness from which the cosmos is assembled. Structurally the CLOSEST fit to a
substrate-gap the Hollow occupies: a gap between densities that is the precondition for form.
Care position. Ch 74 carries "the loudest Ariosophy, Nazi-occult and völkisch firewall on the road,
authorial-only, living inclusive Heathenry honored." And the standing vril firewall
(vril-vs-nazi-occult-vril-society-firewall) requires vril to read mathematical and physical, never
race-mystical polar energy. A negative-vril entity glossed with Norse primordial-void vocabulary sits
one association away from the exact Thule/Vril-Gesellschaft register the firewall exists to prevent.
NEVER borrow its NAME, its vocabulary, or its Norse cosmological framing. The structural echo is
authorial and invisible to the player. Concretely: no Hollow may appear at Ch 74, and the deadzone
grammar must not use frost/fire polarity language.
What it is. Egyptian cosmology's genuine horror is not a void but ANNIHILATION — the devouring by
Ammit at the Hall of Two Truths, the failure to be justified, the cessation of a being who existed.
This is the tradition that most precisely describes what the Hollow's stolen shape represents: a
thing that was, that was not permitted to continue, and whose remainder persists wrongly.
Care position. Ch 69 is ELEVATED (ancestral with living descendants and active revival). Ma'at,
Anubis, Thoth, Ammit and Osiris are audit-only, never bodied; only Apep is fought, and the realm
program is explicit that this is care-clean because Apep is "the enemy the tradition unmade itself"
(HL_0121).
the thing denied its ending — and this is exactly the sort of true-history immersive teaching the
care doctrine says not to scrub. The line: the Hollow may be UNDERSTOOD through the second-death
idea in L3 material and must never be presented as an Egyptian entity, never appear in the Duat,
and never involve a weighing, a judgment or an assessor. Purification as MERCY for a denied ending
is a strong, care-clean reading and it composes with the purify branch already designed.
What it is. Chaos as the yawning gap preceding order; in Hesiod a generative rather than malevolent
principle. Standard care, no living practitioners, and the realm program already places deities here
as "real and sober."
on most freely in authorial framing. Chaos-preceding-order maps cleanly onto "the substrate before
density," which is T1_Vril's own doctrine in Greek clothing. Usable for L3 connective material at
standard care.
What it is. Emptiness in Madhyamaka Buddhism is a doctrine of DEPENDENT ORIGINATION — the absence of
inherent, independent essence in phenomena. It is soteriological. It is a liberating insight, the
opposite of a horror, and it is held by living practitioners across many traditions today.
Care position. Ch 72 NARAKA AND MERU is the road's MAXIMUM care tier — "living Hindu, Buddhist and
Jain cosmology; deities honored and never villainized" — and the realm program flags it as the
highest-care realm that has had the LEAST attention. A blight-monster glossed as "emptiness made
flesh" would equate a living liberation doctrine with a corruption organism. That is a category
error before it is a care error: śūnyatā is not a void, not a hole, not an absence of substance, and
not a lack. Rendering it as a monster would be both offensive and simply WRONG about the concept,
which is the failure mode the immersive-teaching mandate exists to prevent.
the good sense of a downstream agent. The Hollow never references śūnyatā, emptiness-doctrine,
form-is-emptiness, or any Madhyamaka vocabulary; no Hollow appears at Ch 72; and no codex or L3
entry glosses the Hollow as "emptiness." This is a rename/reframe instruction with teeth, not a
removal — the concept is not banned from the game, it is banned from THIS entity, and Ch 72 is
where Buddhist cosmology is honored properly and at length.
This exclusion is also the reason the NAME matters beyond aesthetics. An entity called "the Hollow"
or "the Empty One," placed two chapters from a Buddhist-cosmology realm, invites exactly the
conflation the firewall forbids — a player, a wiki, or a downstream authoring agent will make the
association unprompted. A name in the ARITHMETIC register cannot be conflated with a doctrine of
emptiness, because it is not making a claim about emptiness at all.
Every other supernatural entity in the game belongs to a tradition and is routed by FU.3's
collectibility map accordingly. The Hollow belongs to the game's own physics. Stating that
explicitly in the class definition means the Hollow can appear widely without ever making a claim
about anyone's cosmology — which is what lets it be a global ambient phenomenon at standard care.
believes a Hollow is, and what a Congolese hunter believes, may differ and may both be wrong. That
is respectful, culturally specific, and reveal-safe, and it is what the natural-voice doctrine asks
for. See §7.2.
---
What it teaches. Outer Wilds is the medium's proof that UNDERSTANDING can be the entire progression
currency: nothing is unlocked, no stat rises, and the only thing that changes across a playthrough is
what the player knows. Three transferable mechanisms. The ship's log is an information architecture
that shows the SHAPE of what you do not yet know without spoiling it — rumor links, unexplored
markers, a map of your own ignorance. Knowledge is non-linear and player-ordered, so the reveal
survives players arriving in different orders. And the Quantum Moon teaches the exact instrument the
Hollow needs: an entity whose behavior is governed by OBSERVATION, which is discoverable, learnable,
and never explained by an NPC.
The roster already proposes this lens as knowledge-progression-decipherment (cell 1, with Obra
Dinn), and the realm program's widen adds "the per-planet-ruleset and Quantum Moon aspect."
What it says about the Hollow. The Hollow's existing trigger design is already Outer Wilds shaped and
nobody has named the teacher: "documentation opens perception," a discoverable-but-arcane ritual, a
bestiary deep enough that Vril Sight can perceive the gaps. That IS the Quantum Moon's rule — the
entity becomes available to a player who has learned how to look, not to a player who has ground a
spawn rate. This lens should be the Hollow's design home.
It also supplies the reveal architecture. Outer Wilds holds its deepest truth behind the player's own
comprehension rather than behind a gate, and the result is that the reveal cannot be spoiled by
sequence. That is precisely what a three-gate Hollow ladder buys (§6): the surface is legible
immediately, the middle tier unlocks with the arc's own reveal, and the depth waits for Ch 77 — and
a player who never contains a single Hollow loses nothing structural, satisfying the non-gating
invariant.
tributary — which is what the existing design already does (FU.3's DOCUMENT-all spine, the
Forgotten One prestige thread). Name L3 as its layer explicitly in the class row so downstream
authoring does not drift it toward an L1 combat encounter.
unnumbered relative to what?) is a better knowledge-progression hook than a name that delivers a
description ("the Hollow" — it is hollow, question closed). Outer Wilds' best nouns are the ones
that make you ask.
SHOW that the entry is incomplete. A sealed record with a visibly unfilled section is an honest
promise to the player and leaks nothing.
What it teaches. The player's entire agency is OBSERVE, DEDUCE, RECORD, and the book confirms only in
groups of three so guessing is unprofitable. It makes documentation feel like mastery rather than
bookkeeping — the opposite of a checklist.
What it says about the Hollow. The CONTAIN verb's collectible is "the record, never a living entry"
(FU.2), which is Obra Dinn's exact instrument. The lesson to import: the record should require the
player to have UNDERSTOOD something, not merely to have arrived. A containment record that asks the
player to identify the spawn locus class, the liminal condition, and what the shape was WEARING
turns the collect into a deduction — and the third of those fields is the one that quietly holds the
reveal, because it can be recorded as observation without ever being explained.
class's defining property.
EXPLAINS it, which is show-don't-tell operating exactly as HL_0043 requires.
---
What it teaches. The oldest rule in the genre, and it is a rule about BUDGET, not coyness. Jaws
works because the shark is broken; Alien works because the creature has roughly four minutes of
screen time; Amnesia's monsters lose potency the moment the player gets a clean, well-lit look and
learns the animation set. The corollary that matters for a game with a 30M-word corpus and an AI
authoring pipeline: the pressure on a system like ours is always toward MORE — more variants, more
spawn loci, more codex entries — and every increment is a withdrawal from the same account.
What it says about the Hollow. The Hollow is the single most over-showable thing in the design. It
already has two spawn loci (deadzones plus extraction scars), a hunt loop, a community-streaming
ambition, a collect verb, an integrity fork, a registry with a DRAFT row, and a prestige tributary.
Each is individually good. Together they describe an entity the player will see often, understand
quickly, and stop fearing by Ch 30.
The restraint lens's concrete instruments, all cheap: never light it fully; never give it a clean
silhouette at rest; never repeat an animation the player can time; keep its audio signature
non-diegetic and unmatched to any other creature; and above all cap the encounters. The "unrendered"
aesthetic in §2.7 is already the right instinct — it is a design that is HARD to look at directly,
which is the whole trick.
elites, no regional sub-species. Every collection system in the game will pull toward variants;
the class row should forbid them at admission rather than lose the argument later.
monster.
thing the design can never over-show, because HL_0044 forbids it until Ch 76-77 — so the reveal
discipline and the horror craft are pushing in the same direction, which is a rare alignment and
should be stated in the brief as a reason for confidence rather than a constraint to work around.
What it teaches. The precedent Josh named. MissingNo's power was never its content — it was a
rendering artifact — but its STATUS: undocumented, rumor-transmitted, arriving through playground
folklore rather than through the game. The design lesson is uncomfortable and important: that magic
came from the ABSENCE of official documentation, and it cannot be manufactured by a game that
documents the thing itself. The moment a wiki has a complete entry, the folklore ends.
What it says about the Hollow. A deliberately authored glitch-rare cannot inherit MissingNo's
folklore by imitating its aesthetic. What it CAN inherit is the structural conditions: the game
should never announce the Hollow (no quest marker, no tutorial, no achievement pop on first sight,
no NPC who explains the ritual), the trigger should be learnable-but-unstated so discovery is
socially transmitted between players, and the codex should be honest that it is incomplete. The
sigma governance already solves the misery half (§17.13, no 1/8192); the discipline this lens adds
is on the ANNOUNCEMENT half, which nothing currently constrains.
design line: the Hollow appears in no quest log, no achievement list, and no tutorial, and its
first appearance produces no UI event of any kind.
spread. A name already owned by Dark Souls and Hollow Knight cannot be owned by this game's
community — searching it returns another game. A distinctive name is a prerequisite for the
folklore this hook exists to generate. This is the commercial half of the argument that §2.2 makes
on reveal grounds and §0.3 makes on collision grounds.
---
Every lens above independently supports holding the depth, and four of them (Outer Wilds, Obra Dinn,
Hollow Knight, SotC) supply the same mechanism: understanding arrives in ORDERED STAGES, and the
player's own comprehension is the gate. The corpus already has the ladder written (§0.2). The
recommendation is to populate the DRAFT registry's reveal_tier column with three gates instead of
the flat design-layer token it now carries.
The Hollow is a blight; negative-vril corruption made flesh. This is already ruled reveal-SAFE in
FU.1 and the reasoning is sound and worth restating: negative-vril corruption is on stage from Ch 6
onward via the False Naga, so a corruption-organism explains itself with canon the player already
has. Say it plainly. NPCs may fear it, name it in their own tongue, and be wrong about it.
This gate does not currently exist in the spec, and its absence is a live reveal defect the sweep
recommends closing.
FU.2 adds "fresh Velheim extraction scars and corruption seams" as a second spawn locus and praises
it for tying the Hollow hunt to "the antagonist's operational footprint," giving it "chapters-worth
of diegetic placement." But the standing reveal discipline holds the House-of-Velheim PATTERN until
roughly Ch 38 — CH_60 line 90's "the family is nameable (reveal-lifted post-38)" — and the memory
record is explicit that even invoked-and-negated agent-nouns leak. A player who can observe, before
Ch 38, that Hollows cluster at a specific organization's industrial sites has been handed the
pattern by environmental storytelling, which HL_0044 names as a reveal channel.
instance is unattributable — the scar reads as damage without a legible author, consistent with how
the arc handles the forcing-mark at Ch 60 ("unattributed… still unplaced"). Post-Ch-38, the
correlation becomes observable, and it becomes one of the arc's better mid-game realizations
because the player assembles it from placements they have already seen. Note this also FIXES the
DRAFT registry row, whose chapter_window currently reads CH_39-CH_65 — already post-38, so the
single existing row is compliant and the gate simply makes the reason explicit and general.
The floor is HL_0044/HL_0112 (nothing pre-Ch-76), and per CH_60 line 90 the thesis and Grand Sage sit
at Ch 77 specifically while Cassius is named at Ch 76. So the Hollow's depth resolves in two beats:
at Ch 76 the patriarch's name makes the cassus/hollow field detonate retrospectively (§2.2), and at
Ch 77 the thesis makes the stolen shape mean what it means.
the L3 connective material that ties the Hollow to the depletion substrate is authored to Ch 77.
HL_0044 enumerates "art direction, music" as reveal channels. The Hollow is an entity whose entire
concept is VISUAL, so its concept art is reveal-governed content, and the realm program is about to
start generating concept boards.
The specific trap: FU.1 specifies that the Hollow "wears the eroded shape of something the depletion
took — a stolen face." HL_0115 specifies that the Grand Sage at Ch 76-77 "shifts into protagonist's
specific gender presentation." A Hollow that ever wears the PLAYER'S face — or a face reading as the
Grand Sage's pre-reveal they/them, ageless, female-dominant presentation — is a Grand Sage identity
hint delivered through art direction, and it is an HL_0044 violation that no text gate would catch.
It is also exactly the image a generative concept pipeline would produce unprompted, because
"a hollow wearing your face" is the most obvious horror composition available.
Hollow's stolen shape is drawn ONLY from non-human fauna and from anonymous, unidentifiable human
outlines; never the protagonist, never a named NPC, never the Grand Sage's presentation. Add it as
a checkable line in the concept-board floor so a board carrying a player-faced Hollow fails before
Josh ever sees it.

species and the 22 familiar slots. The locked numerical canon is untouched and this is
positive-controlled: FU.4 and the binding-stone reconciliation establish that a Hollow is never
TAME-status, so it is outside the T3_Creatures_Tameable §2.4 elevation pool by construction, can
never become a 34th legendary, holds no slot, does not breed, and grants no combat power. Admission
changes neither 33 nor 22.

docs/pipeline_review/HOLLOW_EXPANSION_INTEGRATION_2026-07-27.md §4.6). The first three clauses
SURVIVE and the numerical guarantee is untouched: never a 34th legendary, no slot, does not breed.
The fourth, "grants no combat power," is superseded on the ABSORB branch, where the evil-integrity
path grants hollow-type abilities toward endgame. That lane is catalog access on the ability tree
rather than a slot or a species, so 33 and 22 still do not move. Two further consequences of the
same rulings reach the bullet below: the lifetime encounter cap and non-announcement re-scope to the
WHISPER tier, with the content tier governed by five per-surface density budgets, and the L3-homed
framing is superseded — the encounter IS L1, its meaning is L3 and held, and its record is the L2
tributary. The class is fought and defeated, and the variant ban is the one sharpening that binds
both tiers unchanged.
downstream: a LIFETIME ENCOUNTER CAP (§1.1, §2.3); a VARIANT BAN — one class, no morphs, no elites,
no regional sub-species (§5.1); NON-ANNOUNCEMENT — no quest marker, no achievement, no tutorial, no
UI event on first sight (§5.2); and L3-HOMED with an L2 documentation tributary, so it cannot drift
into an L1 combat encounter (§4.1).
collect verb stays, the CAP and the SINGULAR record make it a rare authored event rather than a
farm, and the completionist tributary counts DOCUMENTATION rather than quantity.
few players that the production cost of a bespoke creature with a bespoke aesthetic and a bespoke
verb is not repaid. Answer: the deadzone environment grammar (§1.3) is reused across every deadzone
in the arc whether or not a Hollow appears, so the atmospheric investment carries independently;
and the folklore economy (§5.2) means reach is driven by transmission, not by encounter frequency.
This is the one place the sweep departs from §6.2, and it does so on three independent grounds.
the most recognizable series in the adjacent genre, and "the Hollow Knight" is the titular
void-filled vessel of the medium's most celebrated absence-entity game — a game already claimed on
our own lens roster at L-R7 as the fairy realm's structural analog. For a signature entity whose
entire purpose is community folklore, the name is unownable and reads as derivative.

wiki-documented monster spends it early and weakens the click in proportion to how memorable the
creature is.
RECOMMENDED NAMING ARCHITECTURE — three layers, per the natural-voice doctrine's rule that names are
what PEOPLE call the being:
term, already what the HW_ registry means. Never player-facing.
firewall requires (mathematical and physical, never mystical); it carries the MissingNo
missing-number resonance the hook was built on; it POSES a question rather than delivering a
description, which is the Outer Wilds naming lesson (§4.1); it cannot be conflated with a doctrine
of emptiness, which the §3.4 śūnyatā exclusion needs; it is distinctive and searchable, which the
folklore economy requires (§5.2); and it encodes the firewall in the name itself — the game's
numerical canon is 33 and 22, and this is the thing outside the numbering. "The Unnumbered" was
already on the original FORK-2 option list; the sweep promotes it over "the Hollow."
a Congolese hunter calls it differ, and both may be wrong about what it is. This is the
culturally-registered naming the doctrine demands, it is the correct expression of local traditions
under §3.5, and it is reveal-safe because a folk name makes no cosmological claim.

epithets ("boss names are what PEOPLE call the being"), which will touch "the Hollow Hunter" at

independently keep an epithet the entity naming just moved away from.
charter's stated position, it is written into a DRAFT registry name (T0_Hollow_Codex), a table
prefix (HW_), a registry row (HW_0001) and several handoff docs — and "the Unnumbered" is more
abstract, harder to whisper, and less immediately evocative than "the Hollow," which is a genuinely
good word. Answer, partial: the churn is small and reversible — the WS7 plan states that all DRAFT
names and prefixes are git-reversible, the registry is v0.1 with a single row, and the class term
(substrate-echo) does not move. The evocativeness objection is real and is not fully answerable;
it is the reason this goes to Josh as a brief with both options live rather than as an applied
decision. If Josh prefers the sound of "the Hollow," the fallback that preserves Ground 3 is to
keep "the Hollow" as the DESIGN-layer nickname and give the player-facing layer the folk names
only — the entity then has no single English proper noun at all, which several lenses (§5.1, §5.2)
would actively endorse.

relabelled. The charter's "pure atmosphere pre-Ch-76" does not contradict canon.

sits between, governed by the Ch-38 pattern window, currently ungated in FU.2 and the sweep's one
identified live reveal defect (§6.2).
the extraction-scar correlation becomes observable; pre-38, natural deadzones only and any scar is
unattributable. Gate 2 at Ch 76-77, the depth lands, with the thesis tie authored to Ch 77.

most obvious horror composition available is the one that violates HL_0044.
are where content rots — a Gate-1 unlock that no downstream author remembers produces exactly the
stale-window class of defect this repo has already paid for twice. Answer: the ladder is not new
machinery; it is the arc's EXISTING reveal ladder (CH_60 line 90) applied to one more entity, and
it lands in a column that already exists and is currently filled with a placeholder. The rot risk
is real and is answered by populating reveal_tier with the gate rather than leaving it in prose.
