Persona — CHAR_0017, Ana, the Manggarai caci fighter: the come-and-go companion instance of the entity-persona system

CANON SUBORDINATION — this document is PROPOSAL-TIER: it serves canon and never outranks it.
The canon: the CVD · the T1 foundation docs · the T0 registries (registries/) · the spine
(docs/spine/CH_*.md) · the region pages (_source/02_Tier_2_Region_Pages/). Authority order: docs/DOC_MAP.md § 0.

READ THAT CANON FIRST — open it and derive from it before you build anything from this document.
If this document disagrees with canon, CANON WINS and this document is the defect — fix the
document, never the canon. Nothing here is applied until it is ratified into canon.

This document mints no registry row, edits no canon file, and changes no numerical, naming,

hard-line or §17 content.

Honest tier: PERSONA COMPILATION — TEXT ONLY, NO SURFACE BUILT. This is the second companion-class

instance of the thirteen-field persona spine [SRC: ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM # The common persona spine],

and the first of the come-and-go class. No persona doc set exists yet, T0_Persona_Index is unminted,

and §9 proposes a row shape rather than a row [SRC: ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM # The new structure]. It

generates no images, dispatches no plate program, authors no dialogue line, and builds no encounter.

Its exemplar is docs/proposals/PERSONA_EXEMPLAR_CHAR_0002.md, whose structure and discipline this

mirrors and whose findings classes it deliberately does not repeat.

Gender note, declared once. Ana's gender is AUTHORED — she is a she in canon, at

[SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # Ana] and throughout the spine — so this document carries no

pronoun-stripping convention and none is owed by a consumer. That distinguishes her sharply from

CHAR_0002, whose gender is inherited from the player's Ch-1 selection and whose persona document must

declare a designer-side convention. Player-facing register rules still bind in full at §5.4.

Citation form, declared on the face. Every citation here is either an insertion-invariant

doc-and-heading-fragment anchor or a registry row-key anchor, the two SRC forms

harness/check_source_anchors.py proves. This document carries ZERO line-range citations: a new

line-range pointer hard-fails gate 46 line_citations tooth C5 unless

docs/line_citation_baseline.json is re-emitted in the same commit, and that baseline is a shared

file this lane is forbidden to touch. Where a claim rests on a build/ file the path and section are

named in plain prose instead; this document has no such claim.

NOT DERIVED (authored judgment, and why it had no canon home):

spine carries care_band and layer_surfacing and no field that says what is perceivable and

absences. The banding is the mandate's instruction; the schema hole is carried as finding F-6 and

is the same hole the exemplar hit.

gives her an independent road and gives the model its rejoin behavior; naming own_life as the field

the whole loyalty model rests on is this document's structural inference, carried openly here

rather than smuggled into the field text.

ROUTING NOTE (contract clause 2). persona is not a listed work kind in harness/route.py — the

router's own kind list runs spine-chapter, region-page, concept-art-region, concept-art-class,

art-bible, quest, music, voice, sfx and the rest, and python harness/route.py persona exits with

"unknown work kind". No route read-set exists to run. The canon nodes read in place of one are the

ones enumerated above, in the order the mandate set: the persona system in full, then the exemplar,

then the four companion-cast design docs, then her registry row and every registry row that could

name her, then the T3 sections, then T1 §8.11, then CH_03, CH_27 and CH_28 in full, then the Flores

region page. Adding persona to route.py is finding F-8, carried jointly with the exemplar.

ARTIFACT-ENROLMENT NOTE (contract clause 5). The persona artifact kind is not enrolled in

docs/canon_derivation.json, so there is no machine coverage key for this declaration to also land

in. The declaration above is the whole of it. Enrolment is finding F-7, carried jointly with the

exemplar.

1. The band law — what may be perceived, and when

Ana's canon is a rhythm, not a line. Her registry row states the shape in one cell:

chapters_present Ch_03;Ch_27;Ch_28;Ch_41-74 [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0017]. Three of those

four windows are separated by absences the spine authors deliberately, and the absences are the

mechanism the whole come_and_go model rests on. So the persona bands by window, and each band carries

a reveal gate in BOTH directions: nothing later may leak backward onto a slice-register surface, and

nothing earlier may presuppose what the player has not yet been shown.

may draw from at all. She is a caci fighter of the Todo ground, roughly the protagonist's apparent

age, who vouches for an outsider and dances a round with her. She does not travel on

only in designer-side folds. Reveal gate: the fold string "recurs Ch 27/28/41"

[SRC: CH_04 # Mechanical anchors] is bookkeeping, not a promise the player is given. No in-slice

surface may signal that she will return, or that there is a road she is on.

[SRC: CH_29 # Continuity anchor]. POST-SLICE.

The band boundary between 1-2 and 3-6 is a hard authoring wall. The slice closes at Ch 13

[SRC: CLAUDE # THE JOSH GATE], and everything at Band 3 and beyond — that she leaves Flores at all,

that she works a blade for hire, that she comes back, that the family reaches for her — is unbuilt

ground from the player's seat in the slice. A Ch-3 line that hints she is going somewhere has spent a

reveal the arc has not made.

2. Band 1 — Ch 3, the rooted age-peer, as designable content

the mandate's own instruction is that the slice is the only register a play-quality claim may be made

verbatim: "one dancer holds the whip and one the rattan shield, and the protagonist takes the shield

first, reading Ana's step and turning each cracking arc on the shield until the count is kept, then

trading to the whip for the answering pass" [SRC: CH_03 # Body prose]. She is a named actor on the

instead of a life" [SRC: CH_03 # Body prose]. Ana is the person on the other side of that. It is

the single most load-bearing thing she does in the slice, and it is a gameplay fact rather than a

line of dialogue.

is explicit: "no continuous traveling companion yet, but Ana (CHAR_0017) first appears as a

recurring caci age-peer" and the Ch-3-to-Ch-4 seam reads "companions: none traveling (Ana rooted to

the region)" [SRC: CH_03 # End-state carry-forward] [SRC: CH_03 # Seam state-diffs]. The early arc

staying solo is RULED and is not a gap to fill: "Ch 2-7 stays SOLO as built. Ana intermittent from

Ch 3 is the witness … No early recruit, no early-Ana expansion"

[SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # D-CAST].

she is anyone's future bodyguard; that there is an organized power anywhere in the world (the Ch-3

land-pressure predates the family entirely and no wider chain exists to surface,

[SRC: CH_03 # Boss structure]); that a whip and a shield will one day be the only weapons in a party

that has no other physics.

Band-2 discipline, stated because a blank is not the same as an omission. Ch 4 and Ch 5 carry her in

their folds as an off-screen recurring peer [SRC: CH_04 # Mechanical anchors]. That is a designer

join and it earns no player surface. A slice build that gives the player a letter, a rumour, a

returning traveller or a market sighting of Ana between Ch 4 and Ch 13 has invented a beat the spine

does not carry and has spent the Ch-27 reunion in advance.

3. The thirteen-field persona

Fields are stated whole, because a persona that only described Band 1 would be a chapter note rather

than a persona. Every field marks where its content is band-gated.

3.1 anchor_ref

CHAR_0017 in T0_Character_Index, name Ana, role manggarai_caci_fighter_age_peer_recurring_companion,

chapter_first_appearance Ch_03_Flores_Manggarai, chapters_present Ch_03;Ch_27;Ch_28;Ch_41-74,

seed_status canonical, faction_affiliations FAC_0001, attackability_tier bonded,

is_load_bearing false, authoritative_doc T3_Supporting_Characters_3_03_5_1

[SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0017]. Persona tier: flagship, per the relevance gate's naming of the

companions as flagship personas [SRC: ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM # The relevance gate]. The persona owns no

fact this row does not carry or that canon has not authored.

Two cells on that row are read exactly rather than smoothed. is_load_bearing is FALSE while

CHAR_0002's is TRUE, which is the attackability axis correctly distinguishing the arc's one

diegetically-resilient figure from a companion who is not one [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0002];

it does not mean she matters less, and the contract is explicit that the flag names a narrow roster

rather than a value judgement [SRC: COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT # INTERFACE 9]. And loyalty_state

reads recruitable, not traveling, which is correct for a companion whose default state across the

majority of the arc's nodes is not-in-party.

3.2 identity

Ana. A Manggarai caci fighter of western Flores, roughly the protagonist's apparent age at their

meeting [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # Ana]. Class: person, companion sub-class, come-and-go tier.

Her people are named in their own term throughout, per §17.1 self-naming, and her community is rowed:

FAC_0001, "The Manggarai community" [SRC: T0_Faction_Registry @ FAC_0001].

Essence, one line: the friend who has her own road and keeps choosing to walk back down it.

Name status: existing and staged, not minted here. "Ana" is rowed at CHAR_0017 and used across the

spine [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0017]. A Manggarai-authenticity screen on the name is a

naming-canon question the prior design pass raised [SRC: COMPANION_ANA # Name status]; it is Josh's

and this document neither runs it nor re-asks it.

3.3 significance_lenses

Drawn from the thirty-three-lens set [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES # The complete lens set].

distinct from the act of war" [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES # Material culture and praxis]. She is the

embodied caci — the larik and the nggiling as a scored ceremonial contest with an agricultural

meaning, never a brawl [SRC: flores_island # Weapons Military and Conflict]. The distinction the

lens draws IS her: she is a fighter of a martial tradition and not a soldier of a war.

[SRC: CH_03 # Side-questlines]. She is that substrate walking.

the rounds, Thread 21 anchors at Ch 3 through it [SRC: CH_03 # Threads advancing], and the region

page makes the tie structural — the ensemble is "central to the caci ceremony"

[SRC: flores_island # Music Sound and Composition Brief]. Her tempo is a musical fact.

the fight that frees an enslaved gladiator-school [SRC: CH_28 # Beat graph].

[SRC: CH_55 # Decisions surfaced]. Band-gated to Ch 55.

Shield roots [SRC: CH_03 # Mechanical anchors], and from Band 5 she is the party's non-vril physics

anchor.

3.4 web_position

ways and it is the edge she leaves and returns across.

director whose ensemble scores her rounds [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0022]; Peer Agnesius

(CHAR_0021), the age-peer whose "friendship develops through shared caci practice"

[SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # Peer Agnesius]. Agnesius is the corpus's only other named caci

practitioner of her generation and is therefore her nearest peer edge; he is rooted to Ch 3 and does

not travel [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0021].

[SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0009], and Elder Tuan Bernardus (CHAR_0016), the keeper of the

untwisted proverb register [SRC: CH_03 # Key ally NPCs]. They are the authority that grants entry

when she vouches; the vouching only means something because they are real.

have known what the protagonist is" [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana]. The single most

emotionally loaded edge she has is an unrowed one; see finding F-5.

ledger with the player [SRC: T0_Worldstate_Variables @ WS_027].

the two of them are canon's stated poles of loyalty: one who never leaves and one who leaves and

returns [SRC: PARTY_STRUCTURE # The measured ground]. Their companion-to-companion edge is

unauthored on both sides; see finding F-9.

not there [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0148]. This is a no-dead-end edge rather than a social

one, and it is band-gated to Ch 55.

[SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana]. Deliberately thin: canon gives the employment and

withholds the person, and inventing one would be authoring.

3.5 background_history

Grounded, and honestly short. She is Manggarai, of the western-Flores highlands where the arc begins —

the Wae Rebo and Ruteng and Todo country of the lingko spider-web fields, the mbaru-niang cone houses,

the Compang center-stone [SRC: CH_03 # Civilizational marks]. She is a young caci fighter of that

community, an age-peer of the protagonist [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # Ana].

T3 carries one further origin fact and the spine does not stage it: she was "assigned against her will

as caci teacher; her resentment shifts to competitive fascination after the protagonist's accidental

vril-enhanced strike" [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # Ana]. CH_03 stages a different opening — she is

"quick and unafraid" and vouches for the outsider [SRC: CH_03 # Body prose] — and stages no strike at

all, the round being explicitly won "not on anyone's skin". This document does not reconcile the two;

it records both and carries the tension as finding F-2. Nothing below rests on the unstaged half.

Band-gated forward history, named so the persona is complete and suppressed at every slice surface:

she leaves Flores and works as a bodyguard for a Mediterranean trader — canon grounds the route

itself, "the most plausible path from Manggarai rural community to European urban center per Indian

Ocean and Mediterranean trade-network record" [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana].

No further backstory is authored. Her home culture's own martial institutions are a declared substrate

gap, not an authoring licence — see §6.

3.6 own_life

The prose account, which stays the authority on what the life means, and which is the field the whole

come_and_go model rests on.

Ana has her own road. That is not a flavour note; it is the mechanism. A companion who is always there

cannot make a return mean anything, and canon has built exactly one companion whose returns are the

point. Her day, in Band 1, is a village day with a training ground in it: the community's work, the

practice, the ensemble's rhythm to move to, the elders' ground to be granted entry onto. In her

absences she is working — a blade for hire in a trade world that runs from the Lesser Sundas to the

Mediterranean, on contracts that are hers and reasons that are hers. When she comes back she comes

back having been somewhere, and the somewhere has a shape she does not describe.

The thing that makes her rhythm legible rather than arbitrary: she leaves by ROUTE and by

CIRCUMSTANCE, not by disappointment. Canon stages the parting as a road-shaped fact — "the

Mediterranean was Ana's world and the Arctic is not her road, and she goes her own way with a warm,

spare farewell" [SRC: CH_29 # Continuity anchor] — and it stages the return as a person's decision

made at cost [SRC: CH_41 # Beat graph]. The going is geography. The coming back is character.

The machine projection, against the 5.2.1 column contract

[SRC: ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM # The daily-rhythm axis]. Proposed values are at §9. She hits the same

schema wall CHAR_0002 hits — home_site_ref and work_site_ref take interior: or zone: prefixes

and a travelling companion has neither — and she hits it WORSE, because her home is real and rowed

(the Manggarai zones on the Flores page) for exactly one window out of four, and unrepresentable for

the rest. See finding F-4.

3.7 motivations

she wants from a fight is that it be an honest one.

psychological: "physical_emotional_expression_rather_than_verbal"

the contest and the community it is danced for, in one token. This is the value the departure rule

compares against the player's integrity band [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # The Departure Rule].

"vulnerable to supernatural threats" [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana], and the spine

states it as a party fact at every band where she travels [SRC: CH_27 # Key ally NPCs]. A person who

can out-fight anyone in the room and cannot touch the thing in the dark has a specific and earned

fear, and it is never played as timidity.

elders before the stranger has proved anything to the community [SRC: CH_03 # Beat graph]. That is a

person who backs a judgement in public and wears the cost of it.

and canon frames the badness as the proof [SRC: CH_41 # Beat graph]. Band-gated; the trait is listed

because a persona that omitted it would mis-author her at every band.

Temperament: level. She does not escalate and she does not sulk. When something goes wrong she gets

quieter and more exact, and the exactness is the tell.

Consumer note: this block is the disposition prior the runtime context pack reads. Nothing in it may

be paraphrased into speech — the register rules at §5.4 bind any line drawn from it, and the

three-sentence ceiling binds harder than any of these traits.

3.9 voice_register

One register, held across every band. Canon is unusually explicit here, and the explicitness is a

hard authoring constraint rather than a note.

silence-when-nothing-worth-saying register across all three encounters"

[SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana].

[SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # Ana]. This is a corpus-wide budget, not a per-scene one. Across

roughly twenty-two staged nodes she is allotted, canonically, one three-sentence speech and no more.

Every other line is shorter.

her is a line taken from somewhere else in her arc. An author who gives her a paragraph has not

enriched her, they have overdrawn the account.

directly — the good reading is a sentence about her mother, and the dark reading is that "she says

nothing and checks weapon grip instead" [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana]. A silence that

is a verdict is the purest form of her register, and it is canon's own.

Registry state, measured. T0_Voice_Registry carries twenty-three rows and NONE is a CHAR_0017 row.

The cultural register adjacent to her is REGISTER_MANGGARAI_FLORES, the wave-0 worked exemplar

register anchored at CH_02 and CH_03 [SRC: T0_Voice_Registry @ REGISTER_MANGGARAI_FLORES]. That row is

the register of her PLACE, not of her person, and the distinction matters more for her than for a

rooted NPC: at Band 3 and Band 5 she is speaking far from Flores, and the Manggarai row is still the

only register canon gives her. The missing per-character row is finding F-10, the same class as the

exemplar's F-2.

3.10 relationships_to_player

She holds a companion relationship ledger. The live traveling-party record is WS_027

companion_roster_state, whose membership and per-member loyalty are seeded from the Character_Index

and it is load-bearing for this persona: the come-and-go companion is not a lesser bond, she is a

bond with a different shape, and one rung of distance held to the end is what a person who keeps her

own road looks like on a ladder.

named relationship token, +ana_caci_peer_bond [SRC: CH_03 # Beat graph], and the generative option

[SRC: CH_03 # Fork graph]. The Ch-3 conduct is the seed her later returns read.

state is modelled QUALITATIVELY here and carries no numeric accumulator. The per-beat relational

rate is retired: THE BOND bands a state rather than a running total, disposition is generated fresh

each encounter, and the roster designer supplies belief axis plus join trigger plus departure

threshold, never a points budget [SRC: COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT # INTERFACE 3].

3.11 care_band

Two readings, and keeping them apart is the whole of this field.

protected: combat at Ch 3 routes through the broker's crew, the bought champion, the roused land and

the twisted-word sorcerer, and never through the Manggarai [SRC: CH_03 # Protected-chapter combat framing],

with HL_0003 binding the class in general terms [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003]. Her tradition

carries its own named at-risk claim and its own canonical framing: the caci is never exoticized as

savage spectacle, and is rendered "as the Manggarai practice it (Erb), never cinema shorthand"

[SRC: CH_03 # Anti-fringe / Frame-A flags] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0005].

[SRC: CH_03 # Entry header], and §17.1 protection is collective, not individual: membership in a

protected culture never escalates an individual's care tier and never licenses a softened,

hedged or under-committed treatment of her. Care does not accrete, per the standing calibration

[SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # D-HL-DOCHIST-FIGURE]. No new care flag, tier or protection is minted

here.

The practical consequence, stated because the timid reading is the live risk: Ana fights, wins, gets

hurt, gets angry, and gets to be the best in the room. Rendering her carefully does not mean rendering

her gently. See §6.

reads it [SRC: CH_03 # Side-questlines].

absence is the architecture rather than a limitation: in a party that routes everything through the

substrate, she is the verb that needs none. A persona pass that gives her substrate perception has

broken the design, not enriched it — the same structural rule that governs CHAR_0002's human

scholarship, arrived at from the opposite side.

Per §2.4.1 of the schema [SRC: ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM # Person].

[SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # Ana], which makes her age band a function of a two-clock model

rather than a number. At Ch 3 the protagonist is internal age 9, age_stage Childhood

[SRC: CH_03 # Entry header]; at Ch 27-28 the protagonist is internal 16, age_stage Adolescence

[SRC: CH_27 # Entry header]; at Ch 41 onward the protagonist is at the Adulthood plateau

[SRC: CH_41 # Continuity anchor]. T3 labels her Ch 27-28 recurrence "Europe adult chapters" with an

"adult-awkward" reunion [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana], which does not sit with the

spine's Adolescence stamp for the same nodes. Ana is HUMAN and the protagonist is not; her clock and

the protagonist's diverge by construction. This document does not resolve it — see finding F-6.

[SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0017]. antagonist_family_affiliation is none. Her awareness of

their home-base chapters are PINNED [SRC: COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT # THE DEGREES OF FREEDOM],

register is the reaction side, and canon fixes its grammar rather than its content: physical

expression rather than verbal, and a world-state-reactive warmth that can express itself as a

checked weapon grip and no words [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana]. PROPOSED shapes,

proposal-tier and each obeying the three-sentence economy — Truly Good earns a nod and a return to

stance; Truly Bad earns the grip-check and the silence canon already authored; Sympathetic earns her

standing a half-step closer rather than a sentence; Detached earns the shortest technical remark in

her vocabulary; Curious earns her demonstrating instead of explaining; Defiant earns her agreement,

because a refusal delivered to someone's face is the thing she respects most. The FACULTY these ride

on is cited: her expression is physical rather than verbal, and that is a rowed fact

[SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0017].

reunion line — that her mother would have known what the protagonist is

[SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana] — which is a person coming as close as a person can to

the secret and choosing not to make it a problem. That makes her the structural opposite of the

local guide the protagonist hides FROM, and the concrete thing the assimilation mechanic buys. Her

Band-1 stance is simpler and earlier: she vouches for a stranger whose face is under cloth

[SRC: CH_03 # Beat graph], which the chapter reads as entry granted as a guest and never as

knowledge.

[SRC: COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT # INTERFACE 2]. She is attackability Tier-3 bonded

[SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0017] — attackable, bond-mediated, at maximal cost, never god-moded

and never an invisible wall [SRC: COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT # INTERFACE 9]. She carries a

player-shaped stat spread like every ally [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # Player-Shaped Ally Stat Spreads],

and unlike CHAR_0002 there is no collision in that — she is a combatant, so the spread has somewhere

to land, and the Intelligence axis buys her behavior quality without ever buying loyalty

[SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # The Intelligence Axis and Ally Behavior Quality].

4. The behavioral layer

The completeness law binds this section in terms: a motion vocabulary including natural and ambient

movement before any aggro, a persona per individual rather than per class, and difficulty and

capability banding [SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # THE CREATURE/NPC BEHAVIORAL COMPLETENESS LAW]. Its

physical-realism half binds alongside it: real-body motion from actual mass and limb structure, weak

and strong points, density and weight, and a damage-type reading

[SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # THE PHYSICAL REALISM HALF OF THE COMPLETENESS LAW]. Ana is the first

companion in this program to whom the physical-realism half applies in full, because she is the first

who is actually a fighter.

4.1 Ambient and idle vocabulary — eleven entries

Every entry names its trigger and its derivation. This is the set the law calls the entity being alive

before it notices you, read for a person whose aliveness is physical.

quite square. Trigger: any idle. Derived from a scored contest discipline built on reading a step

leaving a rest. Derived from the technical-combat-vocabulary register being her whole attention

distance, it is a reach. Trigger: crowd entry, market, corridor. Derived from the caci's read-and-turn

discipline, which is a distance discipline before it is anything else [SRC: CH_03 # Body prose].

Trigger: entering an enclosed or unfamiliar space. DERIVED from the bodyguard employment

[SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana]; band-gated to Bands 3 and 5, and absent at Band 1, where

she has not learned it yet. Stated because the reverse leak matters: a Ch-3 Ana who scans exits has

been given a decade she has not lived.

Trigger: emotional context. Derived directly from "silence when nothing worth saying"

[SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # Ana], staged as a visible behavior rather than an absence.

she orients toward it and does not close. Trigger: high vril density, folkloric encounter. Derived

from her having no vril ability and a canonical vulnerability to supernatural threats

[SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana]. It reads as wariness and never as fear-of-the-native:

the thing she is wary of is a real thing that can actually kill her.

person whose competence is her contribution.

Locomotion set, and the physical-realism read. Walk, run, sprint, scramble, climb, wade, crouch,

lateral shuffle, the caci step-and-turn, and the full evasion set — she is the corpus's melee

companion and has the movement budget of one. Her gait carries a trained fighter's mass, low and

economical, and the implements read in the silhouette. Weak and strong points DO apply to her, because

she can be hurt: canon stages her being "genuinely marked, hunted, and wounded, nearly taken"

[SRC: CH_61 # Key ally NPCs] — band-gated, named here only to establish that she is a real body in the

damage model rather than an exempt one. Her attackability is Tier-3 bonded

[SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0017]: real consequence, no invulnerability flag.

Difficulty and capability banding, per the law's last clause. Her capability is not flat across her

bands. At Band 1 she is a skilled child in a scored contest her community runs. At Bands 3 and 5 she

is a professional. Canon states the ceiling — "highest-damage melee combatant in any accompanying party

when present" [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana] — and her spread is the player's to build

[SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # Player-Shaped Ally Stat Spreads], so the banding is a

floor-and-ceiling statement rather than a fixed stat block.

4.2 Combat vocabulary — what she actually contributes

The ally contract asks for a verb and a mode contribution that composes with the player's rather than

duplicating it [SRC: COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT # INTERFACE 7]. Hers is the cleanest in the corpus,

and it is cited rather than designed here.

[SRC: CH_03 # Body prose] — is a parry-and-answer loop, which is a different verb from raw damage

and a different verb from every vril route.

where difficulty itself is world vril-density [SRC: COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT # INTERFACE 7].

A companion who needs no substrate is a companion who still works where the substrate does not,

and a companion the substrate can reach where nothing shields her. Both halves are canon and

neither is a flaw to paper over.

NOT ONE names CHAR_0017. Five are ally_kind familiar (AP_0001 to AP_0005), three are ally_kind

any (AP_0006, AP_0007, AP_0008), and six are ally_ref CHAR_0002 gated on a ward she is the bearer

of (AP_0009 to AP_0014) [SRC: T0_Ally_Behavior_Policy @ AP_0009]

[SRC: T0_Ally_Behavior_Policy @ AP_0006]. The corpus's melee companion has zero authored behavior

policy. This is finding F-1 and it is the load-bearing one.

AP_0007 peel, domain proactivity, role_tag ROLE_GROUP_SUPPORT, gated on

flag(local.threat_on_lower_durability_ally) [SRC: T0_Ally_Behavior_Policy @ AP_0007] — peeling a

threat off a lower-durability ally is EXACTLY what the party's blade does for the party's

record-keeper, and it is the one rowed verb that fits her without inventing anything. AP_0008

track_arena_state, domain awareness [SRC: T0_Ally_Behavior_Policy @ AP_0008], which costs no act.

AP_0006 read_counter_class, domain pattern_detection, ROLE_SINGLE_SUPPORT

[SRC: T0_Ally_Behavior_Policy @ AP_0006], which her read-and-turn training makes plausible and which

the Intelligence axis buys [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # The Intelligence Axis and Ally Behavior Quality].

Her role-tag is unrowed, so whether ROLE_GROUP_SUPPORT and ROLE_SINGLE_SUPPORT rows can both bind to

her is open [SRC: T0_Role_Axis_Registry @ ROLE_GROUP_SUPPORT]; that is the same role-axis question

opposite of what Ana is and must never be generalized to her. She is a fighter; being un-targetable

would delete her.

[SRC: COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT # INTERFACE 7], and the caci-technique layer specifically is

technique.

4.3 Travel, camp and party behaviors

is a practice, not a conversation.

Band-gated, and named here because the shape of her leaving is as authored as the shape of her

returning, and an author who stages a tearful parting has broken the register that makes the return

land.

5. Loyalty wiring — the come_and_go model against §8.11

5.1 The rowed tuple, and the one place the design docs disagree with canon

The live row reads loyalty_model come_and_go and loyalty_departure_threshold

circumstance_only, with the row's own note recording the provenance

[SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0017]. The ruling agrees with the row and is explicit about the

direction of the correction: Ana is rowed "come_and_go / caci_honor_community / departure

circumstance_only (corrected from the major_opposition seed — she leaves by plot/route, not

integrity opposition) / join invest_Ch03" [SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # R2].

docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_ANA.md states the opposite of the live row — that the

row reads major_opposition and the WS7 plan proposed circumstance_only — and recommends "keeping"

major_opposition [SRC: COMPANION_ANA # Loyalty model, belief axis, thresholds]. Canon is authority

and the proposal is the defect: the row and the ruling both read circumstance_only, and the ruling

is dated and signed. This document records the correction and does NOT re-open the ruling, per

contract clause 7. The substantive design tension the prior pass was reaching for is real and is

carried as finding F-1's sibling, F-3, below — but it is a spine-versus-registry question, not a

re-ratification request.

What circumstance_only MEANS, quoted: it "is not integrity-driven at all and departs by plot"

[SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # The Departure Rule]. It carries no belief-distance

trigger. So on the rowed model her caci_honor_community belief axis moves nothing mechanically —

it colors her reactions, and it does not compute a departure. That is a coherent design: she is the

companion whose comings and goings are ROAD-shaped, not judgement-shaped, which is exactly what

CH_29's parting stages.

5.2 The rest of §8.11, applied to her

the companion axis [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # The Nine Shared Bands]. Her ruled

ceiling is Trusted [SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # D-REL-BANDS].

investment return, and the two clauses are one contract

[SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # The Departure Rule]. Her reroute is authored and

rowed: her melee line is covered by CHAR_0148 or a hired blade

[SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0148] [SRC: CH_55 # Fork graph]. Her investment return is NOT

authored anywhere, and it matters more for her than for any other companion because she is the one

the player will actually equip — see finding F-8's sibling, F-7.

picks are intrinsic and leave with her, because "a companion is not a stat block the player harvests

on the way out" [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # Companion Loadout Parity and Investment Protection].

For a companion who leaves and returns two or three times in an arc this is not a corner case, it is

her normal operating cycle, and the REBONDED boundary case is written for exactly her: a companion

who returns "returns as who they were — their spread, specialties, and combat style persist across

the absence, and re-equipping is the player's choice to make again"

[SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # Companion Loadout Parity and Investment Protection].

Ana is the corpus's only rowed REBONDED case.

CHAR_0002 [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # The For-Life Inversion]. Nothing in Ana's

arc is an inversion, and a persona pass that reads her Ch-55 branch as one has confused two

mechanisms.

She holds no familiar slot, is not on WS_012, and is never counted in the twenty-two.

order, and there is no player-to-ally order channel

[SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # Direct Ally Control and the Character-Not-Unit Law].

For the party's best fighter this is the ruling that keeps her a person.

5.3 The relationship engine and the non-gating invariant, on her axis

The invariant, restated because it binds every opportunity she opens or closes: for every node and

every reachable combination of integrity band, relationship state, faction standing and mark, at least

one through-line to the node and onward to the Epilogue remains open; no closed opportunity can empty

the forward set [SRC: ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM # The hard rule].

lore lane (SQ2, [SRC: CH_03 # Side-questlines]), and a physical-competence route through encounters

the vril route also solves. Kit, route and lore classes — never progression.

[SRC: CH_55 # Fork graph], which is opportunity conservation made concrete rather than promised.

Every DEPARTED event she generates ships a non-empty rerouted_paths

[SRC: T0_Worldstate_Variables @ WS_028].

only non-vril combat verb. An encounter authored to REQUIRE a non-substrate answer would make her

progression-critical, and a progression-critical target behind a closable relationship is a hard

fail of the no-dead-end gate [SRC: ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM # The no-dead-end gate]. The rule that

falls out: her verb may always be the BEST answer to an encounter and may never be the only one.

[SRC: ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM # The hard rule]. Losing her reshapes the texture of a fight; it never

reshapes whether the fight can be won.

5.4 Register rules for player-facing surfaces

The test is the doctrine's own: does a person say this

[SRC: NATURAL_VOICE_DOCTRINE # The voice rule]. Six rules, each checkable against a line.

[SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # Ana]. Any line that is not the arc's single longest is shorter than

Band-1 register specifically: she is a child of nine or so in her own village among her own elders,

speaking the Manggarai register the region page and REGISTER_MANGGARAI_FLORES anchor

[SRC: T0_Voice_Registry @ REGISTER_MANGGARAI_FLORES]. She is not yet the professional of Band 5 and

the slice must not borrow that voice forward. What is already true at Band 1 is the terseness and the

technical eye; what is not yet true is the weight behind them.

6. Care and reveal read

Manggarai community, its elders, its healer and its practitioners are inviolate and are never combat

targets; combat at her home chapter routes through the broker's apparatus, the corrupted agent and

the roused land [SRC: CH_03 # Protected-chapter combat framing].

martial tradition with an agricultural blood-fertilizes-earth meaning, danced with the larik whip

and the nggiling rattan shield, scored and timed, first blood kept for the elders' ceremony

[SRC: CH_03 # Body prose] [SRC: flores_island # Weapons Military and Conflict]. The named at-risk

claim is exoticizing it as savage spectacle, and the canonical framing is that it is depicted as the

authenticity, never omission, and the calibrated-bolder doctrine names care-tier inflation as the

defect rather than the safeguard. For Ana that has three concrete consequences. First, she is the

best fighter in any party she is in [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana] and she is written

that way — a hedged, softened, deferential Ana would be the actual §17.1 failure, because it would

take a living culture's martial tradition and make it decorative. Second, the caci is a contest with

real blood in it, and the blood has a meaning the tradition itself gives it; sanitizing it out is

not respect, it is erasure of the thing that makes it a rite rather than a game. Third, she gets to

be hurt, angry and wrong. Canon stages her wounded and nearly taken and explicitly frames her as a

companion with agency who is never fridged [SRC: CH_61 # Dialogue and scene anchors]; that is the

register, and it is bolder than protection would be.

corpus — flagged as a Section-6/10 acquisition or deep-research gap", with Erb's The Manggaraians

named MUST-ACQUIRE and "currently deep-researched not owned"

[SRC: flores_island # Academic References and Books to Acquire]. The design consequence binds this

document: Ana's combat identity roots in caci technique the corpus cannot yet ground, so this persona

authors NO caci technique, no named movement, no stance vocabulary and no ensemble-timing claim. It

authors what canon already carries — the read-and-turn discipline, the scored count, the whip and the

shield — and stops. Everything here is correct now and deepenable on Erb.

or behavior authored from this persona, at any band she occupies before the reveal

[SRC: CH_28 # Boss structure]. No pre-Ch-76 Grand-Sage hint appears anywhere. And in the other

direction: nothing of Bands 3 through 6 may surface at Band 1 or Band 2, which is the firewall §1

states and §2 enumerates.

[SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # D-HL-DOCHIST-FIGURE]. Nothing in this document is framed as

named-for-veto [SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # THE NO-VETO LAW].

7. Prose-register compliance

Authored to CVD §17.14: plain prose, single-level dashed bullets, no code blocks carrying

paste-content, H2 through H4 headings only, no emphasis asterisks in the body, affirmative framing

per-column data of the kind the spine entries themselves table, and neither carries paste-content.

8. Presence table across the arc — banded, for the director only

Every row is a canon-stated presence and carries its anchor. This table is designer-side and no

either. That is finding F-4's second half.

10. Findings for the director

Eleven, of which three are load-bearing: F-1, F-3 and F-4. Findings F-4, F-7 as it touches enrolment,

F-8 and the role-axis half of F-1 recur from the CHAR_0002 exemplar and are cross-referenced rather

than re-argued.

T0_Ally_Behavior_Policy holds fourteen rows: five ally_kind familiar, three ally_kind any, and

six ally_ref CHAR_0002 gated on a concealment ward [SRC: T0_Ally_Behavior_Policy @ AP_0009]

[SRC: T0_Ally_Behavior_Policy @ AP_0006]. Nothing names CHAR_0017. So the corpus has six authored

policies for the companion who cannot fight and none for the companion who is canonically "the

highest-damage melee combatant in any accompanying party when present"

[SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana]. She has no role_tag, no power_source, no

autonomy_band, no int_tier and no disposition_legal_set anywhere. This is not a persona

question and this document does not answer it: it needs an authored combat-companion policy set, and

the caci-technique half of that authoring is substrate-blocked on Erb (§6), which makes the

sequencing a director call rather than a lane call.

"assigned against her will as caci teacher; her resentment shifts to competitive fascination after

the protagonist's accidental vril-enhanced strike" [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # Ana]. CH_03

stages neither the assignment, the resentment, nor the strike: she is "quick and unafraid" and

vouches for the outsider [SRC: CH_03 # Body prose], and the round is explicitly won "not on anyone's

skin", which a vril-enhanced strike would contradict. Both are canon; T3_Supporting is her

authoritative_doc [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0017] and the spine is the built node. The prior

design pass proposed a reconciliation [SRC: COMPANION_ANA # CARDINAL ITEMS FOR JOSH]; this document

does not adopt it and does not author either version. Characterization canon is Josh's.

she does. Her rowed and RULED threshold is circumstance_only, which §8.11.2 defines as "not

integrity-driven at all" [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # The Departure Rule], and the

ruling's own parenthesis says the correction was made because "she leaves by plot/route, not

integrity opposition" [SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # R2]. CH_55 then builds, on her, "the FIRST

built companion-loyalty-is-integrity instance in the arc", with the corrosive branch writing

ana_forced_out_covered_by_wenceslao_or_hired_blade and the generative branch writing

ana_drawn_deeper [SRC: CH_55 # Fork graph] [SRC: CH_55 # Decisions surfaced]. A companion whose

threshold carries no integrity trigger cannot be forced out by integrity. Either the row's threshold

is wrong for what the spine built, or CH_55's transition events need a different mechanism than the

departure rule. This is a registry-versus-spine reconciliation and it is the director's; this

document names it and applies nothing. Note for whoever takes it: the prior design pass reached the

same conclusion from a false premise about which value was live (§5.1), so its recommendation should

be re-derived rather than adopted.

home_site_ref and work_site_ref take interior:INT_NNNN or zone:<zone_id>

[SRC: ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM # The daily-rhythm axis]. Ana has a real, rowable home site for one

window and none for the others, and T0_Persona_Schedule's day_class is a calendar selector with

no arc-phase axis. The exemplar raised the travelling half of this as its F-4; Ana adds the

alternating half. A phase-or-band selector on the child table, or a third site prefix, is owed

before rank 11 mints.

[SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana], and no CHAR row, no persona and no faction edge carries

the person. The Ch-3 Manggarai roster is otherwise fully rowed [SRC: CH_03 # Key ally NPCs]. Either

the mother is one of the rowed Ch-3 villagers and the edge is undeclared, or she is an unrowed

figure the line invokes. Naming her would be authoring; declaring the edge would not.

apparent age" [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # Ana], the protagonist is an elf on a two-clock model

whose internal age plateaus, and Ana is human. T3 calls Ch 27-28 "Europe adult chapters" with an

"adult-awkward" reunion [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana] while CH_27 and CH_28 stamp

age_stage Adolescence at internal 16 [SRC: CH_27 # Entry header] [SRC: CH_28 # Entry header]. And

the ability line "caci abilities superior to protagonist's at thirty years of focused training"

[SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana] is grammatically ambiguous about WHOSE thirty years, with

both readings carrying different age consequences. Her voice banding, her visual banding and her

capability banding all depend on the answer. Naming her ages is authoring; naming the ambiguity is

not.

§8.11.6 makes the return half of the DEPARTED contract and writes the REBONDED boundary case

explicitly [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # Companion Loadout Parity and Investment Protection],

and Ana is the only rowed companion who departs and returns as a normal cycle. No spine node stages

a return or a rebond transaction for her; CH_41 stages the emotional return

[SRC: CH_41 # Beat graph] and writes no kit state. Separately, the persona artifact kind is still

unenrolled in docs/canon_derivation.json and persona is still absent from harness/route.py,

both carried from the exemplar as F-7 and F-8 there.

INSTANCE, RE-VERIFIED AGAINST V3" for the integrity-driven companion leave-or-draw, names her as the

candidate carrier, and leaves promise_node and payoff_node deliberately blank because "naming

them would be authoring, not importing" [SRC: T0_Promise_Ledger @ PL_0074]. CH_55 states in terms

that it IS the first built instance and builds it on her [SRC: CH_55 # Decisions surfaced]. The

ledger row and the spine node contradict each other about whether the promise is paid. Filling the

node cells is a ledger authoring act and is not this lane's; reporting that the evidence cell no

longer describes the corpus is.

Ana and CHAR_0002 share a party at Ch 27-28 and across Ch 41-74, they are canon's stated two poles

of loyalty [SRC: PARTY_STRUCTURE # The measured ground], and the persona schema's web_position has

a slot for the edge [SRC: ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM # The common persona spine]. Neither persona can

author it alone. The state model also has no variable for a companion-to-companion relationship —

WS_027 carries per-member loyalty toward the PLAYER only

[SRC: T0_Worldstate_Variables @ WS_027]. The exemplar carried the same absence from the other side.

while her register is one of the most tightly specified in the corpus (a three-sentence arc ceiling

and a fixed technical vocabulary) and while REGISTER_MANGGARAI_FLORES is the register of her place

rather than her person [SRC: T0_Voice_Registry @ REGISTER_MANGGARAI_FLORES]. Same class as the

exemplar's F-2, and sharper here because her ceiling is a countable budget a casting pass would need.

row reads Ch_03;Ch_27;Ch_28;Ch_41-74 [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0017] and D-CAST Ruling 2

ratifies her as parting at the Yggdrasil crossing at Ch 74

[SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # D-CAST]. CH_75, CH_76 and CH_77 all carry her forward in their

companion folds [SRC: CH_75 # Key ally NPCs] [SRC: CH_76 # Key ally NPCs]

[SRC: CH_77 # Key ally NPCs], and the D-NTALA-ENC deep-dive record cites CH_75 as the place canon

"assigns the fought-alongside blade to ANA"

[SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # D-NTALA-ENC]. Additionally, her row's extensions cell still carries

the deprecated Antarctica descriptor for Ch 41 [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0017] which T3 itself

retires in favour of Ch 41 South Africa Modern [SRC: T3_Supporting_Characters # §5.1 Ana]. Both are

registry-versus-spine reconciliations, both are post-slice, and both are the director's.

11. What this document does not do

It mints no registry row, edits no canon file, applies no ally-behavior policy, and does not touch

docs/DOC_MAP.md, docs/PIPELINE_LEDGER.md, docs/line_citation_baseline.json, any registry CSV or

any shared file. It authors no caci technique, no dialogue line, no combat moveset, no stat value and

no numeric relational value, and it produces no image, plate or geometry. It does not re-open the

ruled circumstance_only threshold, the ruled solo early arc, the ruled Trusted calibration target,

the ruled three-tier roster shape, or the ruled core four. It does not name Ana's mother, fix her age

band, decide which of the two introduction canons is hers, or fill PL_0074's node cells — each of

those is authoring, and each is carried as a finding instead.
