**"Does the vessel itself want 1-3 crew-companions (a pilot/engineer/quartermaster shape) distinct
from field companions?"**
**Answer: the vessel wants ONE dedicated crew-companion — a ship-keeper / sailing-master who fuses
the helm + reconfiguration-engineer + hearth roles — NOT a 1-3 pilot/engineer/quartermaster trio.
The pilot and the quartermaster are STATIONS, not companions.** A separate non-landing "pilot" is
redundant with Trade-10 navigation (held by the ship-keeper or a field navigator) and with the
protagonist's own Vimana (Device-1, her craft — no dedicated Vimana pilot). A separate "quartermaster/
cook" is the Trade-7 galley station (Ch-42 Haiti home) — a hearth STATION a field companion or a
Ch-42 guest holds, not a dedicated non-landing crew body. Minting three non-landing crew NPCs would
inflate the roster (Josh's live open question is roster SIZE), duplicate stations the ratified rule
already assigns by "persona + relationship," and collide with the §9b anti-mercenary guardrail ("never
a coin for a stranger"). One soul, not three hires.
Per the standing decision-analysis protocol, the three real forks, deep-dived and adversarially tested:
who also holds a station when aboard (Nami navigates AND lands); the ship is crewed between
deployments by the away-team + familiars + ambient non-persona hands. *Strength:* zero roster
inflation; One Piece proves you never strictly need a stay-aboard tier. *Fatal weakness:* it leaves
the ship SOULLESS as a home. The mothership is the "fun AARPG, a pleasure to travel with" tone-space
— galley scenes, festivals aboard, banter [SRC: docs/proposals/systems/vehicles-fleets.md # §2.7]
— and it is a persona-bearing entity in its own right (VH_001). A home with no keeper has no one to
come home TO. And the mothership follow-up ratifies a real functional slot ALT-1 cannot fill: when
the away-team lands, "a skeleton bonded crew holds the mothership (helm, and an engineer nursing the
reconfiguration/cryo rig)" [SRC: vehicles-fleets.md # mothership follow-up §6]. Someone bonded
must stay and run the transforming hull. ALT-1 has no one for that seat.
engineers who never land).** *Strength:* delivers the below-decks found-family texture. *Weakness:*
a character who NEVER lands cannot witness the assimilation mechanic — the richest companion hook,
and Tier-specific ("a Tier-1 crew member is who hides WITH you")
[SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/PARTY_STRUCTURE.md # §5] — so 2 of the 3 struggle to clear "rich meaning"; and
three bodies triple the roster cost for stations the ratified rule already fills situationally.
and the family it carries, so their meaning IS the vessel — the one hook ALT-1 leaves empty, at
one-third ALT-2's roster cost. They clear "rich meaning" in a register a field companion cannot: not
the witness to each CULTURE, but the witness to the CREW and to who the protagonist becomes BETWEEN
cultures — the confidant you come home to, changed, carrying secrets. And they fill the ratified
skeleton-crew seat by construction. → ALT-3.
Strongest objection to ALT-3, and the answer: a stay-aboard keeper is shed at the Ch-65 funnel —
the mothership cannot sail into Duat/Yggdrasil, so the keeper cannot cross into the Realm Road
[SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/PARTY_STRUCTURE.md # §1.3]. *Answer:* that is not a disqualifier, it is a designed
farewell. The keeper's arc CLIMAXES at the Ch-65 lock — the ship, and its keeper, are the last of the
mortal world left behind before the realms; the hearth you return to (or don't) at the homecoming
Epilogue. Ana does not cross either; presence-to-the-Epilogue is not the bar. for_life itself does
not mean "present every node" — it means departure-trigger = never [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §4].

Teaches: seamanship, the reading of ocean and weather, the ethic that no ship serves bondage. Learns:
she is a coast-and-crossing woman, not a landwoman — the protagonist's assimilation into inland
cultures is a world she witnesses only by its cost (§5.2), and the vril-runed hull is a magic she comes
to only because the protagonist brings vril aboard (her Trade-8/9 reconfiguration craft grows FROM the
protagonist's inscription mastery).

---
The mothership is the game's hearth — the "pleasure to travel with" tone-space. Without a keeper it is
a set. With her it is a HOME: someone weeps for the hull when it is holed, keeps the galley for the
found-family, notices when Ntala is troubled or patches Ana after the Ch-61 wound. She is the crew's
witness, where the field companions are the cultures' witnesses. She is the one constant PLACE — the
deck you return to after every assimilation — made a person.
She does not witness the protagonist's IN-culture integrity choices (she is not the away-team). She
witnesses the RETURN — the protagonist coming back aboard from each culture, changed, carrying what she
hid [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/PARTY_STRUCTURE.md # §5]. This is the confidant-you-come-home-to position: the
bond deepens when the protagonist confides the cost of the mask; it strains when she comes home someone
the keeper doesn't recognize. A different, and richer, angle on the assimilation mechanic than the
in-culture witness — and one no field companion occupies.
Her belief axis IS the moral inverse of the antagonist. The fleet system is explicitly framed as "a
counter-network to the family's 5,000-year extraction fleet — the opposite of a slaver economy"
[SRC: vehicles-fleets.md # §2.5]. A Swahili sailing-master whose pole is *no ship serves bondage*
makes that framing a PERSON: the ship is her argument against the House, and if the protagonist's
integrity turns the ship toward extraction, she is the character the betrayal costs. Reveal-safe — she
reads "someone hunts this coast's shipping," never the family/name, pre-Ch-38.
From come-and-go coast-captain who lends passage → to the keeper of a vril-runed transforming
mothership she could not have imagined, sailing a counter-network against a 5,000-year fleet. Her
craft grows from mundane seamanship into vril-hull reconfiguration BECAUSE the protagonist brings vril
aboard — a growth that is literally entangled with the protagonist's own mastery climb.
The vessel wants ONE soul. The pilot and the quartermaster do NOT clear the rich-meaning bar as
separate companions — they are stations the ship-keeper and the field companions hold. Inflating to a
1-3 crew tier would trade this one rich character for two thin ones and grow the roster Josh is trying
to size. **One ship-keeper: FULL_COMPANION. The pilot-as-companion and quartermaster-as-companion:
NOT_A_COMPANION (they are stations).**

1. [CARDINAL — casting] Route A vs B — promote Binti Hassan (CHAR_0056) into the ship-keeper
(recommended, least invention) OR author a net-new Swahili shipwright (name = naming-canon). His
call re-slots a ROSTER-B light-ally candidate either way.
2. [CARDINAL — loyalty assignment] the invested_sticky model, the belief-axis token
free_passage_no_ship_serves_bondage, the major_opposition threshold, and the Ch-8 join trigger
are RECOMMENDATIONS — do not populate before he ratifies (only 5/162 rows seeded, illustrative).
3. [BOOK-PROCESSING DEPENDENCY] the §17.1-weight Swahili-shipwright background_history (mtepe
craft lineage + Indian-Ocean/Zanzibar trade history, ELEVATED care) is THIN on-page — flag the
enrichment, do NOT fake it.
4. [DRIFT — flag, do not resolve] Vehicle_Registry rows VH_001 as air / CH_38; vehicles-fleets.md
the doc/contract; if VH_001 is truly air/Ch-38 the join chapter moves and the "fills the Ch 2-12
solo gap" payoff weakens.
5. invested_sticky first exemplar — if Josh ratifies her, she becomes the model's first
spine-proven exemplar (it has zero today) — a bonus beyond this candidate.
