Status: labelled RECOMMENDATION for Josh. Casting + per-companion loyalty assignment is characterization
canon = Josh's; everything here is grounded in the spine's staged cast and cited. Every NAME and every
loyalty assignment is flagged cardinal. Two burned failure modes named up front and held: (1) undisclosed
filters behind measured numbers — every count states its filter; (2) seeds/proposals read as canon — only
the ratified ground (Foundations A/B/C, the rulings) is treated as fixed, everything I add is a labelled
proposal. I read the concurrently-mutated CH_39/56/57 + T0_Character_Index for CONTENT only; I cite no line
numbers from them.
---
The origination asked: **beyond Ana/Tunde, which staged modern allies (Kanenhí:io Ch 44? Nayra Condori
Ch 52? others?) have guest arcs — and in the counter-campaign 59-65, who rides toward the lock?**
Measured answer: nobody new rides toward the lock. The modern arc Ch 39-65 stages zero new
traveling companion. At the Ch-65 Gathering the active companions are exactly two — Ntala (CHAR_0002)
and Ana (CHAR_0017) — plus "the accreted found-family carried aboard the Vimana … **rooted to their
regions**" (the spine's own words: warmth-bookkeeping, not staged travel)
[SRC: docs/spine/CH_65.md # Continuity anchor / Key ally NPCs]. **The cast that actually RECONVENES at the
Gathering is the ANTAGONIST** — the four continental desk-directors (Kannbrandt/Marrowquill/Gainsayle/Wall)
and the champions (the Verderer, the Factor, the Ledger-Hand)
[SRC: docs/spine/CH_65.md # Boss structure]. The counter-campaign's recurring spine is a rogues' gallery,
not an ally roster.
Every modern ally the inventory surfaces is, by the actor-beat filter (FILTER-1/3, presence in 2+ chapters
as a staged actor), a single-home-chapter figure — a local keeper or contact who stands beside her at
one site and is then named forward in folds but never staged present again
[SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/CAST_INVENTORY.md # Tier 3]. This is not a defect to paper over; it is the **structural
signature of the modern arc**, and it is largely correct (§1 below). It also leaves one genuine, ratified-
gap-shaped opening the arc's own structure is begging to fill (§4).
So this design does two honest things:
never be made to travel (doing so would violate §17.1). The 59-65 site-keepers are LIGHT_ALLY. Sōma
Kōhei is the strongest — a LIGHT_ALLY promotable to GUEST_COMPANION under a specific, §17.1-safe reframe.
drawn_conditional counter-campaign rider — the loyalty model with ZERO exemplars in the whole
corpus [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/PARTY_STRUCTURE.md # §4], which Party-Structure §4 says the modern arc is
exactly where "at most 1-2 drawn_conditional modern joins" should fire. I design it with Sōma Kōhei as
the strongest staged anchor and flag the open cardinal calls.
---
The two names the origination flagged are both protected sovereign keepers, and the corpus stages them
with deliberate care precisely so they DON'T travel. Promoting either to a companion would break the exact
hard line the chapters are built to honor.
Staged as a Faithkeeper who "teaches her — as a guest, never a participant — the shape of a
constitution older than the United States," at witness-depth only, with the Two-Row Wampum ("neither
steers the other") as the **governing metaphor for how the protagonist moves through this whole layer:
She travels alongside. She does not take the paddle." [SRC: docs/spine/CH_44.md # Body prose, CH44_B11].
The whole meaning is sovereignty-in-place. A Haudenosaunee Faithkeeper leaving Onondaga to crew a
foreigner's flagship is the negation of the beat. He is a one-chapter teacher (Tier 4), correctly.
Reveal binding also forbids fictionalizing the office (HL_0007) [SRC: docs/spine/CH_44.md # CH44_B10].
Staged as "a present-tense, sovereign Aymara community member and keeper who is at the site for its living
significance (a keeper/witness, not a guide-for-hire), … the agency theirs (HL_0003)"
[SRC: docs/spine/CH_52.md # Key ally NPCs]. Ch 52 is a NO-PRESENCE relief node — no operation, no traveler
recruited. She walks the protagonist through Puma Punku as "her people's work, not a riddle for anyone
else to solve" [SRC: docs/spine/CH_52.md # CH52_B07]. Her meaning is "the taking in a poncho" refused —
she owes the outsider nothing and joins nothing. NOT a companion, correctly.
The generalizable firewall: a protected living-culture keeper (Haudenosaunee, Aymara, Ainu, Māori,
Plains nations, Aboriginal) whose whole narrative function is *sovereignty rooted in place* must NOT be
promoted to a traveling companion. A companion is, by construction, an outsider to 25 of ~26 cultures
[SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/PARTY_STRUCTURE.md # §1.1] — so the region-per-chapter arc DELIBERATELY carries cultural
authenticity through the stay-at-home local-keeper tier, not the crew. This is why the modern arc is thin
on travelers, and it is a feature. Faking a traveling native companion for a thin-substrate culture is the
§17.1 violation the mandate names ("care = weight + authenticity"). **The traveler tier must be drawn from
figures whose meaning does NOT require rootedness** — see §4.
---
The counter-campaign's structural rule at every site: the protagonist frees a forced site-guardian, and
"she does not do it alone: at each site the keepers of the true practice … stand with her, because the
counter to a stolen guardian was never a weapon. It was **the living relationship the family could only
steal because it could never make one**." [SRC: docs/spine/CH_59.md # Body prose]. This is a beautiful,
load-bearing design — but each keeper is a single-chapter local ally, present at their one site:
| figure | id | site / Ch | staged role | verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yehia Maïga | CHAR_0152 | Sahel / Timbuktu, Ch 59 | the smith whose fire carries its own nyama; folk-counter to the forced dune-djinn | LIGHT_ALLY |
| Rutendo Mhofu | CHAR_0153 | Great Zimbabwe, Ch 59 | the defunded archaeologist kept standing | LIGHT_ALLY |
| the zar-elder (composite) | — | Aksum, Ch 59 | tends the zar with respect; ELEVATED care | LIGHT_ALLY (composite — do not name) |
| the njuzu diviner (composite) | — | Nubia, Ch 59 | knows the real njuzu; frees the drowning-construct | LIGHT_ALLY (composite) |
| Ainu knowledge-keeper | CHAR_0155 | Hokkaidō, Ch 60 | stood-with against erasure; name DEFERRED | LIGHT_ALLY — THIN, book-processing-blocked |
| Ojinjintka Win / Della Rufus | CHAR_0158/0159 | Plains, Ch 62 | fold-carried | LIGHT_ALLY |
| Tihpen Umandal / Rāwiri / Kena | CHAR_0160/61/62 | Pacific/Aotearoa, Ch 63 | rooted to their regions | LIGHT_ALLY |
None recurs as an actor after its home chapter [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/CAST_INVENTORY.md # Tier 3]. All are
correctly Tier-3 not_companion local contacts. Do not promote any to a traveler — the same §17.1
firewall as §1 (most are protected-culture keepers), and the deferred/composite ones (the Ainu keeper, the
zar-elder, the njuzu diviner) are explicitly book-processing dependencies: their cultural depth cannot
be faked into a companion persona (§17.1 care = weight + authenticity). If Josh ever wants one of these as
a recurring GUEST, the honest path is a book-processing enrichment pass on that culture FIRST, then a
design — never a promotion off the current one-chapter substrate.
---
The strongest staged modern ally by a wide margin — the fullest-staged Tier-3 figure (6 actor-beats, the
most of the tier [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/CAST_INVENTORY.md # Tier 3]) — and the only one whose staged material
already does three companion-grade things:
1. A deep bond beat, not just a lesson. She works the tatara three days and nights beside him and
forges a sword with her own hands — "the plainest, most honest thing she has ever made"
[SRC: docs/spine/CH_60.md # Body prose, CH60_B02]. Co-labor over days is companion-forming, not
contact-forming.
2. He teaches the arc's integrity core. "The cut and the restraint are one discipline … the hardest
part of any blade is knowing when not to draw it" [SRC: docs/spine/CH_60.md # CH60_B03] — the kenjutsu/
iaijutsu restraint teaching that IS the modern arc's moral spine (and rhymes with the Ch-65 verdict-
mirror: answer force with the work, not a blade).
3. He is the DELEGATED-VICTORY. He "stands up in daylight and enters the theft into the record
himself … refuses to be filed into silence," and *that* — an ally standing the record — collapses the
Factor's whole concession, not her own act [SRC: docs/spine/CH_60.md # Body prose, CH60_B08]. He has
already proven he is a person whose moral courage changes the plot.
He is also trade-wired: TRADE_03 Blacksmithing roots its modern home at his forge
[SRC: registries/T0_Trade_Registry # TRADE_03; docs/spine/CH_60.md # CH60_B02]. A blacksmith = a mothership
forge/armory station [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §8].
Why LIGHT_ALLY today, not yet a companion: he is staged in ONE chapter and never present again; his
delegated-victory meaning is "the keeper who stands the record in his own place." And the §17.1
tension is real and sharp: Ch 60's antagonist is a Factor who EXTRACTS Japan's heritage out of Japan.
A design that lifts a Japanese swordsmith out of Japan to crew a foreigner's flagship would rhyme with the
villain, not the hero. So a naive "recruit Sōma Kōhei aboard" is refused.
The §17.1-SAFE promotion (my recommendation — see §4): promote him NOT to an aboard-crew traveler but
to a drawn_conditional / come-and-go GUEST who stays rooted in Japan and **rejoins at the Gathering
(Ch 65)** — because the counter-campaign goes global and "the keeper who will not stop keeping the record"
is the *literal answer* to the Gathering's verdict-mirror. He rides toward the lock as a summoned witness,
not an extracted asset. This preserves his rootedness, pays off his Ch-60 delegated-victory as a Ch-65
callback, and gives the arc its missing drawn_conditional exemplar. This is the design in §4.
---
drawn_conditional counter-campaign guestThree ratified facts converge on exactly one missing companion:
drawn_conditional model has ZERO exemplars and orphans if none is authored; Tunde is the West-Africa candidate, but the model needs to actually FIRE somewhere [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/PARTY_STRUCTURE.md # §4;
docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §2 caveats].
crew.' … at most 1-2 drawn_conditional figures pulled in by high integrity"
[SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/PARTY_STRUCTURE.md # §4].
player's sustained integrity ALIGNS with their belief pole at magnitude ≥60
[SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §5]. The 59-65 arc is *about* people choosing to stand
in daylight because of who she has shown herself to be — the Ch-60 defecting clerk who "stops correcting
the truth and starts telling it" [SRC: docs/spine/CH_60.md # Body prose]; the African scholarship network
that "stand as allies-in-parallel" on the generative fork [SRC: docs/spine/CH_59.md # FORK_CH59_A]. **A
drawn_conditional guest is this theme incarnated as a person instead of a faction mark.**
So the design is not an invention bolted on — it is the arc's own recurring "defector/keeper who stands the
record" archetype, promoted from a per-site fold-mark into ONE recurring guest who rides to the Gathering.
OPTION A (RECOMMENDED) — promote Sōma Kōhei (CHAR_0154) to the drawn_conditional guest.
Grounded in a fully-staged figure with solid substrate; no new culture invented; pays off an existing beat.
He stays Japan-rooted, aids from his place across 60-64, and is *summoned/drawn* to physically stand at the
Ch-65 Gathering when the counter-campaign convenes globally.
zero §17.1 fakery; the Ch-60→Ch-65 "stand the record" callback is powerful; trade + combat wiring already
exist. Con: stretches a one-chapter figure; risks the extraction-rhyme if mishandled (mitigated by
"rooted, summoned-not-carried"); a lone-Japan tie for a global arc.
OPTION B — author a NEW modern-professional figure (an investigative archivist / heritage-law advocate).
A modern globe-working profession (archivist, restitution lawyer, investigative journalist) has no §17.1
rootedness problem — travel is native to the job — and the corpus already stages the type (Alejandra
Ovalle Batres CHAR_0141 Amazon archivist; Helena Vasconcelos CHAR_0144 legal advocate)
[SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/CAST_INVENTORY.md # Tier 3].
perfectly; a clean drawn_conditional exemplar. Con: a NEW named figure = naming-canon + a full new
persona to author; less grounded than Sōma; must not become a "white-savior scholar" cliché — needs care.
I recommend A for groundedness (design WITH the staged cast, do not invent), with B held as the
fallback if Josh judges the Japan-rootedness too constraining for a global-arc guest. The rest of this
section designs Option A (Sōma Kōhei as the drawn guest); the mechanics transpose cleanly to B.

metal at the atomic level and reads materials; a person who forges beside her for three days may sense
she is not only what she seems — and chooses, like he chose with the confiscated objects, to keep the
record honest by NOT filing her into anyone's ledger. The witness who keeps the secret DEEPENS the bond.

drawn_conditional — RECOMMENDED. He is drawn by demonstrated integrity, notrecruited; he stays rooted and comes when the record needs standing. This gives the corpus its first
drawn_conditional exemplar besides the still-open Tunde candidate. (Alternative: come_and_go if Josh
wants him circumstance-driven rather than integrity-driven — but the whole point is that he answers to
*who she has shown herself to be*, which is the DRAWN mechanic. RECOMMEND drawn_conditional.)
record_kept_in_daylight (a value pole: the truth is keptby refusing silence, by open daylight not shadow, by the work not the weapon). **The belief-axis

major_opposition (=60). He is drawn, not for-life; sustainedcorrosion (using the family's own discrediting instruments — the Ch-59/60 corrosive fork) opposes his

not any_sustained_misalignment (a single cut corner doesn't lose him — two-node sustain rule).

letter that the blade was forged for cutting cleanly, not for cutting corners), a chance to course-
correct before he simply does not come to the Gathering.
Gathering muster is thinner. Non-gating: the recombination-exam still resolves via the community
marks and Ntala's record [SRC: docs/spine/CH_65.md # CH65_B03] — his absence closes a *warmth/witness*
opportunity, never a progression path (rerouted_paths = the faction-network standing + the record
itself) [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §5, §9].

1. Does ANY modern figure become a traveling/guest companion at all, or does the arc stay Ntala+Ana +
local-keepers (the current measured state)? My rec: promote ONE drawn_conditional guest — the arc's own
structure and the zero-exemplar gap both point at it.
2. Option A vs B — promote Sōma Kōhei (grounded, my rec) or author a new modern-professional figure.
3. Sōma Kōhei's loyalty tuple — drawn_conditional / record_kept_in_daylight / major_opposition /
the Ch-65-muster join trigger (all §6, all cardinal).
4. The record_kept_in_daylight belief-axis token — naming-canon (the whole belief-axis vocab is).
5. Any promotion re-opens the NAME screen (CHAR_0154 "Sōma Kōhei") at NAMING_METHOD visibility.
6. Whether a rooted-and-summoned guest crossing to Ch 65 respects the §17.1 extraction-firewall to
Josh's satisfaction (my design keeps him Japan-rooted specifically to clear it) — his call.
GROUNDED for the recommended design (Sōma Kōhei / Japanese swordsmithing is richly built and deep-research-
verified in Ch 60). THIN/book-processing-blocked for: the Ainu keeper (CHAR_0155, name deferred), the
zar-elder and njuzu-diviner composites, and several Pacific/Plains fold-allies — none of which I recommend
promoting; if Josh wants any of them as a recurring guest, a book-processing enrichment pass on that
culture is the hard dependency FIRST (§17.1: never fake cultural depth).
