npcs/COMPANION_ENDGAME-CREW.md
Candidate: the endgame party — who crosses the nine Realm-Road otherworlds, who parts at the
crossing into the fairy realm, and who stands at the Two Courts (Ch 76) and the Waterfall (Ch 77).
One-line verdict: the endgame roots NO new full/travel companion — this is CANON, not a gap
(every Realm-Road node states "no new ally NPC"; CH_75 explicitly rules the one new figure a
NON-travel-companion). The endgame party is a FUNNEL of returns + realm-native GUESTS, and the
single companion-class figure it originates — the grown best friend — is a GUEST_COMPANION
(role-built, name-for-Josh). The real design work here is not casting; it is the **crossing
structure — who can even enter the fairy realm — and the reveal solitude** at the summit.
Everything below is a labelled RECOMMENDATION. Casting, the crossing ruling, CF-2's name, and the
Ntala/Ana crossing/parting calls are characterization + world canon = Josh's; they are flagged
CARDINAL. Citations [SRC: path # anchor]; per the concurrent-mutation notice I read CH_28/56/57
and T0_Character_Index for content only and cite them by name, never line.

Three ratified facts converge to make the endgame a *closing* of the cast, not an opening:
threshold realm is unpeopled (no living community)" [SRC: docs/spine/CH_66.md # L167]. The same
holds 67-74 — the otherworlds have no living communities to recruit from (FOUNDATION A, gap 3).
fairy realm: the protagonist (elven birthright — she FELL from it in the Prologue) and the
childhood FAMILIAR (lost Ch 2, fell WITH her, reunited Ch 58, "crossing home into the realm with
her" at Ch 75) [SRC: docs/spine/CH_75.md # L19; FOUNDATION C # §1.3]. The familiar is the
familiar axis, not a companion — it proves a bond can cross, nothing more.
as "an ALLY-SIDE reunion… NOT a mid-game travel companion (the older travel-companion idea was
ruled mistaken — the friend lived in the realm while the protagonist was exiled on Earth)… Built
at ROLE LEVEL — identity and name deferred to the naming method and Josh"
[SRC: docs/spine/CH_75.md # L211].
So the endgame party is assembled entirely from: (a) returns — the core that survived the Ch-65
lock and had a reason to cross; (b) realm-native GUESTS — figures who belong to the otherworlds
and stand with her there; (c) the familiar and the war-host menagerie (familiar axis). The
mandate's "rich meaning per companion" is served here by DEPTH OF PAYOFF, not by new heads: every
figure at the summit is an early thread landing.
---
This is the load-bearing endgame call, and it is a live unresolved tension in the corpus:
Ntala (CHAR_0002), Ana (CHAR_0017), "the accreted found-family" — all the way INTO the fairy realm
and up to the Waterfall [SRC: docs/spine/CH_77.md # L247].
fairy-realm threshold while the protagonist enters alone, and that parting point "moved to Ch 74
Yggdrasil… so the parting point (and which realm the companion halts at) changes" — a DEFERRED,
not-yet-re-authored structural item [SRC: docs/spine/REALM_RECASCADE_PUNCHLIST.md # L182-186].
The built nodes therefore contradict the parting-point intent. The design must reconcile them. Three
steelmanned options:
Ntala + Ana + found-family enter the fairy realm and stand at Ch 75-77 as currently written.
journal-answers-Cassius beat (Ch 76) needs no rework.
reveal solitude** at the single canonical thesis surfacing (Ch 77 Grand Sage); leaves the
punchlist parting-flag unaddressed; strains the folklore the fairy realm is built on (mortals do
not simply walk into and out of Faerie — the time-price is the tradition's core rule).
Ntala hands the completed record to the protagonist AT the crossing ("carry it where I can't"); no
human enters the fairy realm; realm-natives populate 75-77.
folklore holds perfectly; the punchlist intent honored; Ntala gets a poignant cost — she trusts
the testimony to the one who lived it and does not get to see the end of the work she gave her life
to.
[SRC: docs/spine/CH_76.md # L29]; the homecoming loses its found-family witnesses.
Ana and the accreted found-family part at the Ch-74 Yggdrasil crossing (the human-world blade
cannot follow — Faerie is not her world). Ntala alone among the humans crosses, because she is
for_life, she is the Witness, and the record is the only weapon that answers Cassius
[SRC: docs/spine/CH_76.md # L29] — and her crossing costs her her mortal world (the folkloric
time-price: to enter Faerie and see the testimony through is to give up the daylight world she came
from; she knows it and chooses it). Then a reveal-solitude refinement at Ch 77: Ntala remains at
the King's hall / the foot of the rising ground; the **Waterfall summit — the Grand Sage recognition
— is the protagonist's alone** (with the familiar, and the father on the paths where he survives, who
are realm/birthright beings, not mortal witnesses).
real endgame cost (Ntala's world; Ana's "the guard who cannot follow"); honors the funnel spirit
(exactly ONE human crosses, at a price); keeps the thesis-surfacing solitary.
strict reading of "only birthright + familiar cross" forbids; and trimming Ntala from the Waterfall
reverses her drafted presence there. Both are Josh's calls (reveal-solitude + crossing-cost canon).
RECOMMENDATION: Option C. It is the only option that keeps the arc's best endgame beat (the
record answering the House) while paying the funnel, the folklore, and the reveal discipline. The
crossing-cost ("the Witness gives up her world to complete the testimony") is a strong, canon-shaped
justification for the single mortal exception — and it deepens Ntala's whole-arc meaning rather than
inventing anything. CARDINAL (touches D-23 Ntala Continuation/Departure + the built CH_75-77
human staging + reveal solitude).

Cassius: "He points to the peoples who fell… She turns the page to the ones he held until they

RECORD/WITNESS; in the Realm War she holds the ledger, not the line.
time-price — the mortal who enters Faerie to finish her testimony cannot return to the world she
documented. The Witness gives up her own world to put the record in front of the one who made it.
This is her growth arc's terminus: from silent unsigned watcher (Ch 3-12) → journal-keeper (Ch 13)
→ the one whose testimony ends the House (Ch 76).
elven-origin is already lifted to the protagonist (Ch 66); she witnesses the Cassius naming (Ch 76)

| Node | Realm | Who is present (RECOMMENDED, Option C) | Cost / parting |
|---|---|---|---|
| 66 | Atlantis threshold | protagonist, Ntala, Ana, found-family, familiars | none — the Sealed Letter reads clean (her elven origin); the crew is still whole [SRC: CH_66 # L167] |
| 67-69 | Pohjola / Apsu / Duat | full crew | the realms-of-testing; no parting — the Duat judgment is witnessed, not joined |
| 70-71 | Hades / Xibalba | full crew | katabasis-as-nostos; the contests are the warrior-blade's realms (Ana at her peak) |
| 72-73 | Naraka-Meru / Annwn | full crew + Arawn befriended | Ch 72 the Vritra mercy-or-death (branch cost lands at Ch 75); Ch 73 Arawn becomes the firm friend who will later cross |
| 74 | Yggdrasil — THE CROSSING | protagonist + Ntala + childhood familiar cross; Ana + found-family PART | the parting point. The blade and the found-family halt; the Witness crosses at the price of her mortal world; the familiar crosses home |
| 75 | The fairy realm at war | protagonist, Ntala (record), familiar + war-host, the grown best friend (path-inflected), Arawn crossed, honored-guardian aid | the homecoming; the grief-geography; the friend re-met; the coalition musters |
| 76 | The Two Courts | protagonist, Ntala (the journal answers Cassius), familiar; the father (Phase 2) | Cassius named; the record spent; on TG the familiar returned to the father |
| 77 | The Waterfall | protagonist alone at the summit + familiar; the father present on TG/GE (realm-being); Ntala at the foot (RECOMMENDED trim) | the Grand Sage recognition — reveal solitude preserved |

the front and taking up arms, the childhood familiar full-rejoined and returned to the father, the
coalition and honored-guardian aid at their broadest, Arawn crossed. The Waterfall lands with the
father present.
the familiar returns as a binding-stone gift or trace; guardian aid is thinner; the father
reconciliation is "a grave respect rather than an embrace" [SRC: docs/spine/CH_76.md # L33].
[SRC: docs/spine/CH_75.md # L211]; Ana likely already departed (Ch-55 withdrawal never re-bonded);
the familiar "fights you and you take its stone"; the father FALLS at his court and is absent from
the Waterfall. The war still resolves and every node plays through — the coalition and war-host
cover the front regardless of any single ally's absence [SRC: docs/spine/CH_75.md # L211]; the
no-dead-end gate holds. The endgame is *lonelier* on the corrosive path, never *blocked*.
The through-line: on this path the endgame party is a mirror of the whole run's relationships. The
companions you kept, drew, and honored are the coalition that stands with you; the ones you lost are
the empty places at the last war. That is the companion-loyalty-IS-integrity system paying off at
arc scale — its richest single demonstration.

AFTER the House is player-facing (Ch 38) and the elven-origin lifts (Ch 66). The grown best friend

# L172].
token is carried, not transitioned, even in the realm [SRC: docs/spine/CH_76.md # L255]. A crossing
companion (Ntala) *witnesses* the recognition as it is staged; she does not learn it early.
Sage — is the protagonist's alone, with only realm/birthright beings (the familiar, the father on
TG/GE) at the summit. A mortal witness at the Waterfall is the one place "a companion who learns too
much" (the mandate's exact worry) actually bites — so Ntala completes her testimony at the Two
Courts (Ch 76) and does not ascend. CARDINAL — Josh's reveal call.
---
Verdict on the candidate (the endgame crew as an origination): GUEST_COMPANION. The endgame roots
NO new full/travel companion — that is canon, and it is correct (the funnel is the act structure).
What it *does* originate is guest companions: the grown best friend (realm-native, path-inflected,
name-for-Josh) and Arawn (war-guest sovereign). Everyone else at the summit is a RETURN (Ntala, the
familiar) or a reveal figure (the father). The crew's correct form is a guest-and-return funnel,
and its value to the game is the arc-scale payoff of every relationship system — not new heads.
Cardinal items only Josh can ratify:
1. The Yggdrasil crossing (Option A/B/C). Recommendation C — Ntala crosses (Witness/record, at
the cost of her mortal world), Ana + found-family part at Ch 74. Reconciles the built CH_75-77
staging with the punchlist parting-flag; touches D-23. The primary call.
2. Reveal solitude at Ch 77. Trim mortal witnesses from the Grand Sage summit (Ntala stays at the
foot); realm/birthright beings only. Reverses her drafted Ch-77 presence.
3. CF-2 — the grown best friend: her NAME (naming-canon, per NAMING_METHOD), and whether she is a
GUEST_COMPANION who takes up arms (drawn_conditional, giving that orphaned model its exemplar) or
a LIGHT_ALLY reunion cameo. Role built; identity/name deferred to Josh [SRC: docs/spine/CH_75.md
# L211].
4. Ana's parting point — ratify Ch 74 (recommended) vs carried-through (built).
5. Arawn as a named war-guest ally (DP-6) — confirm the guest-ally status and the honored-guardian
aid model (THE STANDING payout, not recruitment).
6. Endgame-realm party SIZE — the funnel's mouth is **2 humans max (protagonist + Ntala) + the
childhood familiar + realm-native guests**, collapsing to the protagonist + familiar (+ father) at
the Waterfall. Confirm the 2-4-body ceiling (FOUNDATION C).
Substrate state: GROUNDED. The fairy realm is game-canon self-grounding (RCM: no Earth-cultural
corpus anchors Ch 75-77 — nothing to book-process); Arawn's Annwn is a living Welsh tradition already
corpus-solid via the Ch-73 deep-research pass. The gaps here are cardinal-canon (names, the
crossing ruling, reveal solitude), NOT thin substrate — the exact inverse of the Earth-arc thin-lane
risk. Do not flag book-processing where the honest blocker is Josh's authorship.
