COMPANION DESIGN — The Ancient Second-Half Companion (Ch 21-38 window)

THE CANDIDATE: the freed Thracian gladiator of the Ch-28 ludus

Status: RECOMMENDATION for Josh. Casting a new named companion, assigning a loyalty model, and

setting a culture are CHARACTERIZATION CANON = Josh's. Everything below is a labelled recommendation

grounded in the spine's already-staged cast + real cultural/gladiatorial substrate in the corpus.

Every NAME and every CARDINAL item is flagged. Citations are [SRC: path # anchor]; CH_28 is being

mutated by a concurrent lane, so it is cited by SECTION/NAME, never line number.

One-line verdict: this candidate is not a light guest — the evidence says he is a **FULL

COMPANION** (invested_sticky core), the strongest single companion the entire ancient second-half

can carry. He fills the largest measured melee vacuum in the arc, gives an already-canon-but-faceless

liberation lineage its face, and is the first exemplar of a ratified-but-empty loyalty model. The

GUEST alternative is steelmanned in §9; I recommend FULL and give the strongest objection there.

---

0 · Why this figure, and why he is not invented

Three independently-measured facts converge on exactly this companion, so promoting him is grounding,

not invention:

1. The measured vacuum. Ana (CHAR_0017) departs after Rome — the Ch-28 exit beat writes

ws.companion_roster_state: +ana_departs_next_node_ch41 [SRC: docs/spine/CH_28.md # §10 beat

CH28_B11] — and does not rejoin until Ch 41. Foundation A measures this as the arc's second-largest

companion gap: Ch 29-40 is Ntala-only, twelve chapters with the melee/martial slot empty

[SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/CAST_INVENTORY.md # Gaps 2]. A companion recruited at Ch 28 who travels north

fills that vacuum on the exact chapter it opens.

2. The already-canon, currently-faceless liberation lineage. The Ch-28 ludus breakout is canon:

the enslaved fighters "rise the way Spartacus once turned it," the whip-hand is broken, and the win

writes ws.community_state_per_region: +rome_ludus_fighters_freed, forward-tracked to Ch 65

(ER-2: Ch 12 Ouidah → Ch 28 → Ch 65) [SRC: docs/spine/CH_28.md # §10 beat CH28_B07; # Boss

structure BE_0028_S2]. The whole-arc pass canonizes this as the **ER-2 "captive → competitor →

liberator" through-line, and its human terminus is explicitly flagged as a gap to fill**:

"the modern human captive→liberator payoff MISSING at Ch 65" [SRC: docs/proposals/RECASCADE_PUNCHLIST.md

# §160], and F3 item 5 self-applies a "Ch 65 human captive→liberator terminal recognition… ER-2's

human lineage gets its terminus" [SRC: docs/spine/CARDINAL_FORKS_BRIEF_2026-07-14.md # F3]. Today

that lineage is a nameless cohort — no ludus fighter is named anywhere in Character_Index or

BOSS_PERSONAS (verified by grep). A single named freed fighter who travels with her is the FACE the

canon liberation-spine is already asking for.

3. The zero-exemplar loyalty model. invested_sticky is a ratified model with **zero staged

exemplars** — Ntala is for_life, Ana is come_and_go, and Foundation B/C both flag the empty

slot [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §2, §11; docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/PARTY_STRUCTURE.md # §0].

A companion forged in the arena crucible (sticky) whose freedom-creed can still be violated

(not immune) is the textbook invested_sticky, and would be the model's first real instance.

The Ch-28 capture that makes this recruitment possible is ratified, confirm-only: "the Ch-28

capture (protagonist captured → fights for freedom, integrity-gated lethal route, easter-egg

sneak-out) stands, per the layer-model-v2 reversal + D-14" [SRC: docs/spine/CARDINAL_FORKS_BRIEF_2026-07-14.md

F3 confirm-only; memory layer-model-v2-fun-mandate]. The stale "never captured / liberate-from-outside"

note in through_line_era_rhyme.md is superseded and slated for retirement (F3 item 6) — do not design

against it.

1 · WHO — culture, name, the 13-field persona

Culture: an ancient Thracian, enslaved young and sold to a Roman ludus

Grounding (what is solid). The Ch-28 body invokes Spartacus by name — a historical Thracian

gladiator — as the model for the breakout [SRC: docs/spine/CH_28.md # Body prose; # Thread 14

"the Spartacus and Cestus fighting tradition"]. The Thraex (the Thracian) was itself one of the

standard Roman gladiator armatures — the *sica* (short curved blade) and small square *parmula* shield,

the greaves and the crested helm — so his combat identity is documented gladiatorial scholarship, not

thin. His people are richly attested in the corpus's own later reach: Ch 61 credits "the documented

Iron-Age Thracian world: the Panagyurishte and Rogozen treasures, the painted Kazanlak and Sveshtari

tombs… the work of a known Indo-European people (never a 'vanished' or 'lost' race — the Thracians were

gradually Hellenized, Romanized, and assimilated into the later Balkan population)"

[SRC: docs/spine/CH_61.md # Civilizational marks — Thracian civilization]. That last clause is

load-bearing: it is the canon that lets him HAVE a homecoming (§4).

Substrate-thin flag (§17.1 — do not fake depth). The corpus grounds his *gladiatorial* identity

and his people's *archaeology/heritage* (Ch 28, Ch 61), but there is **no ancient-Thrace lived-culture

chapter** — his civilian Thracian world (the Zalmoxis mortality-cult and its "the dead do not die"

belief, Thracian social structure, the language, daily life, the horseman/Heros iconography) is a

BOOK-PROCESSING DEPENDENCY. His background_history and voice_register fields cannot be authored

at full persona depth until that enrichment lands. This is a real dependency, flagged not faked (care =

weight + authenticity). What CAN be authored now: the arena present, the freedom creed, the combat

identity, and the heritage-reference layer that Ch 61 already supplies.

Care read. Care-clean. He is the oppressed-freed cast as HERO, never a defamed culture or a villain

— §17.1's collective protection is not triggered by an individual ancient-culture hero rendered with

weight. The one adjacent hard line to hold: no Thracian deity-name on him (HL_0099-class) — his name

must be a documented *human* Thracian name, not Zalmoxis/Sabazios/Bendis/Kotys.

Name — NAMING-CANON, FLAG FOR JOSH (do not treat any option below as chosen)

Per docs/NAMING_METHOD.md (deep-canon → adversarial-filter → player-vibe). I propose grounded options

drawn from attested Thracian onomastics, screened clear of deity-names and real-person collision;

Josh rules:

gladiator's name* (Horace, *Sat.* 2.7). Strongest grounding; reads clean and hard.

grand for a slave-fighter; noted for range).

names). A design-rich option: the crowd knows him by a Latin arena-name he discards on the sand at

the breakout, taking his Thracian birth-name back as the first act of his freedom. The arena-name

vs birth-name pair is itself a naming-canon item for Josh.

Gender — CARDINAL (characterization canon), RECOMMENDATION with reasoning

Recommend male, for combat-identity contrast: Ana (female, caci agile blade) is the incumbent melee

identity, and a second agile-blade female would read as redundant (the combat contract wants allies to

compose, not duplicate [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §7]). A male heavy

shield-and-*sica* frontline is the complementary silhouette. Historical gladiatrices (the Halicarnassus

"Achillia/Amazon" relief) make a female gladiator fully attestable if Josh prefers the parallel-to-Ana

read; flagged as his lever.

2 · WHAT HE DOES — job, combat, what he teaches

Combat role (real-science + vril grammar). He is the heavy frontline / guard-break fighter —

the shield-and-*sica* discipline, formation pressure, endurance, and crowd-control that holds a line

while lighter allies flank. In Composure-node terms he depletes the direct / guard sub-node by

disciplined heavy pressure, where Ana depletes the agile-precision node and the protagonist works

vril/astral — three composing verbs, not three copies [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md

§7]. Vril asymmetry holds: he is a mortal fighter with no vril (the Ch-28 continuity already

types Ana this way — "highest-damage melee, no vril, vulnerable to the supernatural"

[SRC: docs/spine/CH_28.md # Continuity anchor]); his weakness to the supernatural is a real combat

texture the party must cover, and his mastery is real physics — leverage, timing, the physics of

the shield-wall and the blade-bind — which fits the "rewards real mechanics" pillar without any vril

overclaim [SRC: memory rewards-intelligence-real-science-immersive-sim].

When both melee fighters are present (Ch 41+), he and Ana are the shield and the blade — a designed

pair, not a redundancy. During the Ch 29-40 vacuum he is the SOLE melee, which is exactly the slot Ana

vacated.

Crew station: gunner / master-at-arms aboard VH_001; he runs the training-yard where the protagonist

(and other allies) drill — his off-ship agency and his on-ship "own_life" both bind to that station

[SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §8].

What he teaches / learns. He teaches the *ethic and craft* of controlled violence: the arena taught

him that a fighter chooses what he will and won't do with a blade, and he trains the protagonist to win

without becoming what won her. He is not a trade-home teacher — honestly, combat is not one of the

10 trades, and inflating him into a trade tutor would be padding. What he LEARNS from her is the thing

he never had in the ludus: that fighting can serve something built, not just survived — her world of

knowledge-keeping is the first future he's been offered instead of a next bout.

---

3 · WHEN — availability, loyalty model, belief axis, DRAWN/WAVERING beats

free-the-ludus beat (CH28_B07). Recruitment is **conditional on the player taking the free-the-ludus

path** (the generative arm of FORK_CH28_B); on the arena-lethal or sneak-out-only paths he is a freed

face the player never bonded, and the slot stays empty — a real, non-gating consequence (the vacuum

simply persists, which the game already tolerates). [SRC: docs/spine/CH_28.md # FORK_CH28_B]

Ana Ch 41+). Terminus at the Ch-65 lock (§5). Not a come-and-go; one long arc.

in the crucible (high inertia), but the 90-cap invariant holds: **complete opposition always forces

departure, investment never buys immunity** [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §4].

(or no_one_is_property / bondage_and_redemption). This token already appears as an illustrative

example in the WS7 vocab discussion [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §2] — he is its

natural owner. Josh ratifies the token set.

hard, pragmatic protagonist, but a sustained pattern of treating people as property (selling

captives, enslaving, the arena-lethal-for-sport habit, the Ch-65 corrosion) drives opposition past his

line. Two-node sustain applies (a single dark choice never strips him).

His integrity beats mapped (the witness cost made mechanical)

He is the sharpest possible carrier of the assimilation-witness hook because his creed is the exact

axis her concealment can either honor or betray:

joined having *watched her kill fighters on the sand for the crowd* — his starting BOND is a full band

lower, and he opens already WAVERING-adjacent. If she freed cleanly, he starts Warm-leaning. His

join disposition is a direct read of the arena fork. [SRC: docs/spine/CH_28.md # FORK_CH28_B]

*un-personed* by a documented persecution machine (the drum-confiscations, the witch-trials)

[SRC: docs/spine/CH_29.md # header]. A formerly-enslaved man recognizing the machinery of un-personing

is a BOND-deepening beat on the generative path — he sees her protect a people's memory and it is

the first time he's seen power used to shelter rather than to own.

a live axis test. Freeing the bound → DRAWN-class deepening toward Family. A corrosive

"configure-the-terms-and-profit" turn (the Ch-32 Amayas temptation, the Ch-39+ vessels) → WAVERING.

§5). Sustained liberation → he is Family, and stands at the human-liberation terminus as its face.

Relation to Ana / IR-3: Ana is the ratified first carrier of the integrity-driven leave/draw

(CL-02 / IR-3, her Ch 55-56 withdrawal) [SRC: docs/proposals/WHOLE_ARC_CONNECTIVE_WEB.md # CL-02]. He

does not replace her — he complements her on a *different axis*: Ana withdraws on the

sustained-corrosive "forcing-seizure" branch; he withdraws on the property/bondage axis. Two

carriers on two poles is exactly the loyalty-model variety Foundation A measures as unexercised

[SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/CAST_INVENTORY.md # Gaps 4]. Flag: do not let his design be read as reassigning

Ana's ratified instance.

---

4 · THE HOMECOMING — Ch 61 Bulgaria/Thrace (the long-arc payoff)

The corpus hands this companion a homecoming most guests never get. Ch 61 was RESCOPED to reach

"the Balkans and Thrace" in the present day, crediting the Iron-Age Thracian world and staging a beat

where the protagonist meets **Kamen Iliev, the Thracian-heritage scholar the family's campaign is

working to brand a crank, and stands as his defender** [SRC: docs/spine/CH_61.md # header; # CH61_B04].

If the freed Thracian companion is still aboard at Ch 61, this is HIS ground: the enslaved fighter of

Ch 28 returns, thirty-three chapters later, to the land of the people he was told no longer existed —

and finds that they were "assimilated into the later Balkan population" [SRC: docs/spine/CH_61.md #

Civilizational marks], not erased. He stands beside Kamen Iliev defending his own people's memory

against the same power that once sold him. That is the cultural-survival significance-lens paid off

in a person, and it composes with the node's existing personal-cost beat (the Blind-Spot's hunt closing

on Ana) — the party's two long-arc melee fighters, both marked by the House, both refusing to be un-made,

on Thracian ground. RECOMMENDATION: wire his homecoming as an additive Ch-61 beat; CARDINAL flag: any

change to the ratified BE_0061 / Ana personal-cost core is Josh's, this rides *beneath* it.

---

5 · PATHS — how he reads on each integrity path; where he departs; no-dead-end

the human-liberation terminus's face (F3 item 5) and — Josh's call — a leader of the Ch-75 coalition

war-host [SRC: docs/proposals/RECASCADE_PUNCHLIST.md # §77 TL-25 allies-coalition].

but not elevated to Family.

DEPARTED on the freedom axis. The departure is a real dark beat (Tier-3 bonded, maximal weight)

but never a wall: his melee slot re-covers (Ana Ch 41+, or the freed-cohort at large), and the

DEPARTED event ships a non-empty rerouted_paths[] per the no-dead-end gate

[SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §5, §9]. Thematically it is the sharpest possible

consequence: the man who joined you to never see a person made property again leaves when you become

the thing he escaped.

The Ch-65 disposition (RECOMMENDATION, CARDINAL — his realm-crossing call is Josh's). He is human;

he belongs to Earth. He does not cross into the otherworld realms (Ch 66-77) — and that is the

*payoff*, not a loss: for the first time in his life he is free to *choose* his road, and he chooses to

lead the freed on Earth rather than follow her into a realm that is not his to enter. His parting from

the realm-bound protagonist is the terminal note of his freedom arc. This respects the Ch-65 funnel

(region/Earth-bound allies are shed at the lock [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/PARTY_STRUCTURE.md # §1.3]) and gives

the shedding a moving reason rather than a mechanical one.

---

6 · MEANING — why the game is richer with him (the mandate's bar)

hole becomes a character.

human-liberation terminus are already ratified as needed-but-missing; he is the person the canon is

asking for, so the whole "captive→competitor→liberator" arc pays off through someone the player loves.

empty mechanics exercised by one grounded character, on a *different pole* from Ana (no reassignment).

protagonist's concealment and choices can honor or betray; the witness who keeps her secret because he

has kept worse, and who leaves when she becomes an owner, is the mechanic at its most legible.

turning a slave-of-Rome into a defender of his people's survived memory against his old enslaver — the

cultural-survival lens made a person.

UNAWARE of the name until the modern arc — his very existence is the House's crime given a face, held

at the licensed pre-Ch-38 register (machinery felt, name unspoken).

A companion who fills a measured gap, faces a faceless canon lineage, exercises two empty mechanics,

sharpens the richest hook, and lands a long homecoming clears the "rich meaning / adds value" bar

decisively. Verdict: FULL_COMPANION.

---

7 · SUBSTRATE STATE (honest)

scholarship); the freed-cohort community he belongs to (rome_ludus_fighters_freed); the liberation

spine he faces (ER-2 / F3); his people's heritage-and-survival reference layer and the Ch-61

homecoming ground (Ch 61 civ-marks + Kamen Iliev); every mechanic he wires into (Foundations B/C).

Zalmoxis mortality-belief, the Thracian language and voice_register, homeland social texture, the

horseman/Heros religious world. His background_history and voice_register cannot reach full

persona depth until a Thrace enrichment pass lands. Authorable-now surfaces are marked above; the

depth surfaces are flagged, never invented.

---

8 · A SECOND companion in this window? — recommend NO (honesty over quantity)

The task allowed "companion(s)." I recommend one. The gladiator alone fills the vacuum and carries

the liberation spine; a second traveller recruited Ch 21-27 would enter a window that already has

Ntala throughout and Ana from Ch 27, diluting per-companion meaning (the exact failure the mandate

warns against). Two lighter notes, flagged not designed:

for the same "martial ally" niche and lacks the gladiator's structural leverage. A LIGHT_ALLY at most.

Sámi *companion* is care-gated and book-processing-gated; recruiting there would risk exactly the

§17.1 harm the bar forbids. Correct move: the gladiator WITNESSES the Sámi node, no Sámi is recruited.

---

9 · VERDICT REASONING — FULL vs GUEST (the decision-analysis, per protocol)

Steelmanned alternatives, since "guest" was the origination frame:

its whole length; exercises the empty invested_sticky model; carries ER-2's human terminus and the

Ch-61 homecoming; a full growth arc. Cons: adds a permanent core body (Foundation C's core budget is

6-8 — he'd be one of them); needs a Ch-65 disposition (supplied, §5).

when Ana returns. Pros: cheaper on the core budget; clean melee-slot handoff. Cons: wastes the

crucible bond, the liberation-terminus face, and the Ch-61 homecoming — he becomes disposable, the

opposite of "rich meaning." Also leaves invested_sticky still empty.

flags as needing a face; fails the mandate.

RECOMMENDATION: Option A (FULL_COMPANION). Strongest objection: a permanent Ch-28 core recruit

plus Ana's Ch-41 return means the party runs *two* melee fighters for most of the modern arc, which can

crowd the combat mix. Answer: the shield-and-blade split (§2) makes them compose, not duplicate, and

the Ch 29-40 stretch (the vacuum) is his solo window — but if Josh judges the core too crowded, Option B

is the honest fallback, and the design degrades gracefully to it (same recruitment, earlier terminus).

---

CARDINAL ITEMS (Josh ratifies — never auto-applied)

1. Casting a new named companion from the freed-ludus cohort (mint the CHAR_0NNN row).

2. The name (Bithus / Dizala / Auluporis / Seuthes; and the arena-name-vs-birth-name pair) —

naming-canon.

3. The culture = ancient Thracian (vs an alternative gladiator origin) — characterization canon.

4. Gender (recommend male for combat contrast; gladiatrix attestable).

5. Loyalty model = invested_sticky (first exemplar) and belief-axis token

freedom_from_bondage (controlled-vocab, naming-canon).

6. departure_threshold = major_opposition; join_trigger = Ch-28 free-the-ludus path.

7. The FULL vs GUEST verdict itself (§9) — a casting/scope call.

8. Ch-61 homecoming beat as additive (rides beneath the ratified BE_0061 / Ana personal-cost core).

9. Ch-65 disposition (Earth-side liberation terminus, does not cross the realms) and any **Ch-75

coalition** role — realm-crossing + finale casting are Josh's.

10. Substrate-thin dependency: an ancient-Thrace enrichment pass is required before his

background_history / voice_register reach full depth — book-processing, never faked.
