Status: labelled RECOMMENDATION for Josh. Casting + per-companion loyalty are characterization
canon = Josh's; everything below is grounded in the spine's staged cast and cited. Every cardinal
item (name, loyalty-model assignment, belief-axis token, join/departure thresholds, the promotion
verdict itself) is flagged [CARDINAL → JOSH]. Two burned lane failure modes named up front:
counts are filtered-and-disclosed, and no seed is dressed as canon (CHAR_0056 carries a canonical
appearance arc but zero loyalty columns — see §2).
VERDICT: GUEST_COMPANION (come_and_go). Not a light-ally. She clears Josh's bar — rich meaning,
adds value — decisively, and she is the single genuinely-open first-half guest the staged cast offers
(the only recurring first-half ally with an integrity fork already staged and no loyalty row yet
written). The honesty caveat that keeps this from inflation is in §3 and §6: she is a come_and_go
sea-legs guest, not a continuous 3-8-chapter in-party rider — because the staged cast contains
no continuous first-half rider at all (FOUNDATION A gap 1). She is the richest thing that is
actually staged, and she directly answers the mandate's exact gap: the first companion who witnesses
the protagonist hide.
---
The mandate: a Ch 2-20 guest FROM STAGED CAST who has the arc, the culture, and the meaning to ride
the first half, richest on the assimilation-witness angle (they see the player hide). The staged
field, measured:
come_and_go, rowed (ROSTER-B); her first-half window isCh 3-5 rooted Manggarai age-peer (non-traveling), then absent to the Ch 27 reunion
[SRC: docs/spine/CH_03.md # Key ally NPCs, CHAR_0017]. She does not ride the first half. Re-designing
her would overlap ratified ground and another foundation's exemplar. Not my candidate.
reappearing-mentor, never in-party (FOUNDATION A, Tier 2). A mentor template, not a traveling guest.
cultures**: a dhow captain whose canonical role is "the recurring Ch 9-38 sea-crossing dhow captain
whose availability is ally-status-conditional" [SRC: docs/spine/CH_16.md # Decisions, Binti sea
passage]. She is present/recurring across Ch 8, 9, 16, 17, 33(embarkation), 38 — with the dense
first-half concentration at Ch 8-17 — and FOUNDATION A names her "the clearest staged
come_and_go template in the corpus" [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/CAST_INVENTORY.md # Tier 2].
She wins on all three of the mandate's tests, and uniquely on the fourth (assimilation-witness): the
Ch 8 body prose makes her the arc's **first person who sees the protagonist is hiding and chooses not
to ask** — "apprenticed on the crossing to a captain who teaches them a sewn-plank craft and never
asks about the cloth kept wound over the ears" [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # Body prose]. The reveal is
that "to be recognized can also be safe" — she is one of the chapter's two positive recognitions set
against the enemy-who-knows [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # Body prose; CH08_B01 reveal].

Swahili Coast, East Africa — the Kilwa/Zanzibar/Pemba Indian-Ocean trading-civilization (composite
peak ~1200-1400 CE) [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # Entry header]. The substrate is deep and cited:
the mtepe sewn-plank shipbuilding, the kusi/kaskazi monsoon-navigation regime that timed a whole
ocean's trade, Swahili/Ajami literacy and the Kilwa Chronicle, the Qadiriyya/Shadhiliyya Sufi orders,
coral-rag architecture — each a civ-mark anchored to the RCM and named primary sources (the Kilwa
Chronicle, Ibn Battuta, the monsoon-navigation record) [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # Civilizational
marks]. Trade-10 Fishing & Navigation roots its ancient home base at Ch 8 under her
[SRC: registries/T0_Trade_Registry [DRAFT v0.1] # TRADE_10; docs/spine/CH_08.md # CH08_B03].
[CARDINAL → JOSH] — the one §17.1 authenticity dependency (do not fake): her staged identity is
"a rare female captain of the historical tradition" [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # Key ally NPCs]. Medieval
Swahili women are richly documented as ship-owners, trade financiers, and powerful mercantile/
political patrons — but a woman commanding a vessel as *nakhoda* is not a well-attested role, so the
"female captain" specificity is the point where depth must be book-processed, not invented: either
substantiate a historical basis (a documented woman commander, or the owner-who-sails), or reframe her
as a female dhow-owner/master who sails her own mtepe (which preserves every mechanic below and is
better-grounded). Flagging the dependency, per the mandate — care = weight + authenticity. The
surrounding maritime/Trade-10 substrate is GROUNDED; this single claim is the MIXED element.

history; L3 nothing declared — she never perceives the House or the pattern (reveal discipline).
authored-only at high-care beats.
[CARDINAL → JOSH] — "Nakhoda Binti Hassan" is an existing staged name (canonical in
CHAR_0056 and Ch 8). Note for the naming pass: *Binti Hassan* = "daughter of Hassan," and *Nakhoda* is
the title — so the name currently reads as title + patronymic, not a given name. Recommend Josh
confirm whether she carries a given name for intimate register (companions are addressed personally at
high BOND); this is naming-canon per docs/NAMING_METHOD.md, flagged not decided.
---
CHAR_0056's Character_Index row carries a full canonical appearance arc **but every loyalty column is
empty** — loyalty_model, loyalty_state, loyalty_belief_axis, loyalty_departure_threshold,
loyalty_join_trigger, and attackability_tier are all blank
[SRC: registries/T0_Character_Index [ACTIVE v1.1] # CHAR_0056, verified: trailing empty fields].
She is exactly the "carried figure with no loyalty_model" gap the mechanics contract flags as the real
open work [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §2 live-data caveats]. So the assignment
below is a genuine first proposal, not a re-reading of a seed. Per WS7 L158 discipline I do not
populate the row — this is the brief Josh rules from.

Master mariner: sewn-plank mtepe construction and repair, celestial + swell + monsoon wayfinding
(kusi/kaskazi), reef-lane reading, cargo trade and port-craft, the captain's authority over a working
deck. All documented Swahili maritime practice [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # Civilizational marks,
CH08_B01/B03/B05].
She opens the Trade-10 Fishing & Navigation ancient home base at Ch 8 as an opportunity (the
returnable "bench and a door"), gating a mastery-tier climb in real navigation science — star-compass
wayfinding, the monsoon regime, sewn-plank naval engineering. This is the game's reward-intelligence
pillar made concrete: knowing real navigation is the progression [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # CH08_B03;
memory rewards-intelligence-real-science-immersive-sim]. Non-gating by construction — the trade climb
is completionist/kit; if her ally-status breaks, the Trade-10 discipline still carries its **own modern
home base forward to Ch 56** (opportunity conservation already staged) [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # Key
ally NPCs].
Her contribution is maritime environmental/traversal control, not melee DPS (that lane is Ana's —
the "slot" design is deliberate). In the 7-mode Composure grammar she breaks the nodes raw damage
cannot: she pilots the dhow in the Ch 8 boarding pursuit (BE_0008.P1 — the chase through escort dhows
and rigging hazards), she reads the reef and monsoon to shape the arena, she holds the vessel as the
moving platform for the deck-duel [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # CH08_B09; COMBAT_ENCOUNTER_SYSTEM # Part
B §5]. Vril asymmetry flag [CARDINAL-adjacent]: her "wayfinding through ocean consciousness" must
stay a *cultural-perceptual* attunement — early-arc, she is NOT a tier-6 vril-signature reader
(HL_0028); do not let the "ocean consciousness" voice-note drift into a vril read
[SRC: memory early-chapter-perception-not-tier6-vril-sight].
Teaches: wayfinding, the free-sea worldview, and the coast's hardest lesson — that distance hides a
person better than any cave, that being seen truly can be safe. Learns (her growth arc, §5): that her
honest livelihood moved people as cargo, and that she can choose her cargo.

protagonist is read at the Africa continental-revisit, her recurrences riding that relationship
column [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # FORK_CH08_B mark_write].
This is the come_and_go sea-legs shape: dense first-half concentration Ch 8-17, a midpoint return
at 38, a late memory-read at 59. Honest disclosure per the lane's failure mode: she is not a
continuous in-party rider — the mandate's "ride 3-8 chapters" is answered by her *arc-span* (Ch 8-38),
not by continuous party membership. The staged cast has no continuous first-half rider (§6 flag).
come_and_go. Parallels the ratified Ana row (come_and_go / major_opposition);she joins per sea-leg, leaves by circumstance (her own monsoon calendar), and recurs on ally-status.
This is the established come_and_go pattern [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §2].
hospitality_free_sea_no_person_as_cargo (a naming-canon token toratify against the T1_Integrity bands). Her value pole: the stranger is taken in, the sea is free,
and a person is never cargo. This pole is uniquely load-bearing because the chapter's whole moral
center — Abdallah's hold — is its violation.
major_opposition (60). She is a guest, not for-life; sustainedmajor belief-opposition — or the single hard betrayal below — ends the recurrence. The 90-cap

captain's savings, slip out pre-dawn). This is complete opposition to her guest-hospitality pole:
the Ch 9 and Ch 38 recurrences close, the Ch-59 cold-read opens instead. **No-dead-end is already
staged canon:** the fork's own opportunity_effects read "nothing walls — the crossings complete by
other means" [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # FORK_CH08_B corrosive row]. rerouted_paths non-empty. ✔
the Ch-59 "keeper-stands-with" read pays off — her BOND can reach Warm→Trusted across the first half.
drawn_conditional beat for her — she is met, not drawn; correct for a come_and_go guest.---
She is the ally-who-knows — the deliberate moral foil to the enemy-who-knows. Ch 8 introduces the
first fully-aware hostile vessel, Abdallah, who "took the emptying-bargain with open eyes" and trades
in people [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # Body prose, BE_0008]. Binti is his mirror on the same coast, the
same trade-lanes: where he sees the protagonist and hunts, she sees and shelters; where he trades
people knowingly, she has moved cargo in ignorance and is undone when she learns what it was. The
chapter that teaches "concealment is no longer enough" also teaches "to be recognized can be safe" —
and Binti is the whole of that second lesson [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # Body prose]. That symmetry is
the single richest thing a first-half guest can carry, and it is already staged.
The assimilation-witness cost/buy (the mandate's richest angle). Binti is the first person in the
arc who registers the protagonist's concealment — the cloth over the ears — and asks nothing. What
it costs the protagonist: to keep her, they must not betray the guest-bond (rob her, or become the
trafficker her belief-pole abhors) — which is exactly the integrity the arc is testing. What it buys:
the first lived proof that trust is survivable, that a hidden thing can be seen and held. The Ch 8
prose makes the cost literal — "it costs them the whole crossing to let even a bench and a door begin
to matter," because "the first warm thing they ever had bit them once and bolted" (the lost Child
Familiar) [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # Body prose]. Binti is where the protagonist re-learns
attachment after the Ch 2 wound.
The House entanglement (reveal-safe). She is innocently, tangentially entangled in the antagonist
network: her contracts ran cargo for Abdallah (NW_0007, the first fully-aware vessel) without knowing
his hold carried captives [SRC: registries/T0_Character_Index [ACTIVE v1.1] # CHAR_0056 extensions;
docs/spine/CH_08.md # BE_0008]. Her awareness_tier = UNAWARE — she learns only that a merchant
she served was a slaver; she never perceives the family or the pattern (reveal discipline: no
who-frame pre-Ch-38, Cassius Ch-76+) [SRC: docs/spine/companion_cast_designs/COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §1.1;
memory antagonist-pattern-reveal-timing].
The growth arc. From complicit-in-ignorance to a captain who chooses her cargo. The protagonist
can help her resolve it (free the hold, expose Abdallah — FORK_CH08_A/B generative) or exploit it
(seal the hold, rob her). Her arc gives the elevated-care slave-trade substrate a *person* carrying it
alongside Rasheed, never set-dressing [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # FORK_CH08_A care_note].
The systems value — she launches the travel system. Her mtepe is the **seed of the entire
mothership-hub**: VH_001 is acquired at Ch 08 via the opt-in acquire-and-own mtepe (SQ6 = "the
vehicle-ownership debut") [SRC: docs/spine/CH_08.md # SQ6; COMPANION_MECHANICS_CONTRACT.md # §8 VH_001
Ch08]. The come_and_go guest who gives the protagonist their first vessel and first returnable home,
roots a trade, and crews the helm is not decoration — she is the origin node of the flagship the whole
cast will later live aboard. Why the game is richer with her: she fills the arc's first
assimilation-witness beat (answering FOUNDATION A gap 1 at its earliest honest point), exercises the
come_and_go model with real teeth (a staged WAVERING and a staged belief-departure, both no-dead-end),
grounds Trade-10, and launches the travel system — four load-bearing wirings in one persona.
Warm→Trusted; Ch-59 keeper-stands-with pays off.
opens; no beat walls (staged canon) — the crossings complete by other means.

1. [CARDINAL] The promotion verdict itself — ratify Binti as a come_and_go GUEST_COMPANION
(my recommendation), or hold her at light-ally. My steelman for light-ally: she is intermittent and
never continuously in-party. My rebuttal (why guest wins): she has a staged integrity fork
(FORK_CH08_B), a staged WAVERING and belief-departure, a teaching trade, a recurrence rule, and the
assimilation-witness arc — that is a guest's interface, not a contact's.
2. [CARDINAL] The loyalty tuple — come_and_go / belief-axis `hospitality_free_sea_no_person_as_
cargo (naming-canon) / major_opposition / join invest_Ch08_active`. Ratify or adjust.
3. [CARDINAL / §17.1] The female-nakhoda historicity — the one book-processing dependency; ground
the female-captain claim or reframe as female owner-who-sails. Do not fake. (Substrate otherwise
GROUNDED.)
4. [CARDINAL] Given-name for intimate register — title+patronymic currently; confirm a given name
for high-BOND address (naming-canon).
5. Structural finding (not hers to fix): the first half has no continuous rider. If Josh wants a
companion who *continuously* witnesses the Ch 2-12 solo assimilation arc, none is staged (FOUNDATION
A gap 1). The strongest promotion path is to extend Binti — have her sail more coastal legs
(Ch 8-14) rather than only the discrete crossings — turning the sea-legs guest into a fuller
first-half traveling guest. That is a labelled option for Josh, not an invention; it would also give
the come_and_go model its first near-continuous first-half exemplar.
