Status: labelled RECOMMENDATION grounded in the spine's staged cast + the T3 Supporting canon + the
Flores region substrate. Casting/loyalty assignment and every NAME are characterization canon = Josh's;
each is marked [CARDINAL — JOSH]. Counts are stated with their filter. Citations are [SRC: path # anchor];
the four concurrently-mutating files (CH_28, CH_56, CH_57, T0_Character_Index) are cited by name/beat, never
by line number.

Ana clears Josh's bar — "rich meaning, adds value" — decisively, and by a wide margin. She is the
second-most-staged figure in the entire spine (FILTER-1 = 44 actor-beats across 22 nodes; only Ntala's
191 exceeds her), the sole built exemplar of the companion-loyalty-IS-integrity mechanic (CL-02 / IR-3),
the House's most human lever (the Ch-61 wound), the party's only pure-physics / non-vril combat anchor,
and one of the four beings who cross the entire Realm Road into the fairy realm (protagonist + childhood
familiar + Ntala + Ana). She is not a guest in the diminished sense; she is a deuteragonist-weight companion
whose *rhythm* happens to be come_and_go.
A deliberate note on FULL vs GUEST [CARDINAL — JOSH]. Foundation C files Ana as the Tier-2 "recurring
guest" exemplar, and her loyalty_model come_and_go is ratified/pinned. I still land on FULL_COMPANION rather
than GUEST_COMPANION, and I want the reasoning visible rather than smuggled: *come_and_go is her loyalty
rhythm, not a ceiling on her meaning.* From Ch 41 she is continuously present through Ch 74 (the whole modern
arc + the whole Realm Road), she carries load-bearing systems no one else carries, and she reaches the final
door. Calling her a "guest" would misreport her weight. The honest split: her structural bucket is Tier-2
come_and_go; her design tier is full-companion. If Josh prefers the schema read where GUEST *means*
come_and_go, the substance below is unchanged — only the label moves.

Ana is Manggarai, from the western-Flores highlands where the arc begins (Ch 2-3): the Wae Rebo / Ruteng /
Todo country of the lingko spider-web fields, the mbaru-niang cone houses, and the caci — the scored,
ceremonial whip-and-shield contest with an agricultural blood-fertilizes-earth meaning, danced as "a courtesy
with teeth and not a brawl" [SRC: docs/spine/CH_03.md # CH03_B09; # Anti-fringe flags]. She is the ancient
origin-culture's returning daughter — the one Flores figure who travels the whole road out.
Substrate status — PARTIAL, with a named THIN flag [§17.1 book-processing dependency]. The Manggarai
*community, cosmology, and architecture* substrate is solid (processed: SRC_00483 Lio ethnobotany, SRC_00230
Keo people-to-land, SRC_00457 Flores classification, SRC_00469 sorcery/witchcraft, SRC_00203 colonial
stratum). But Ana's *own* identity core — the caci martial detail and the gong-waning that scores it — is
explicitly flagged thin in the corpus: the Flores region page records "the caci martial detail and the
gong-waning musical theory are thin in the processed corpus — flagged as a Section-6/10 acquisition or
deep-research gap," and names the MUST-ACQUIRE keystone **Erb, *The Manggaraians*** (currently
deep-researched, not owned) [SRC: _source/02_Tier_2_Region_Pages/flores_island.md # Section 16]. **Design
consequence:** Ana's combat identity and her belief pole both root in the caci ethic, so authoring her
loyalty-mission-depth combat and her value-conflict at full weight is *book-processing-blocked on Erb + the
caci/gong-waning acquisition*. Flag, do not fake (§17.1: care = weight + authenticity). Everything below is
built to be *correct now and deepenable on Erb* — never to invent caci technique the corpus cannot yet ground.

outsider-child's caci teacher; her resentment shifts to competitive fascination after an accidental
vril-enhanced strike; she later leaves Flores and works as a bodyguard for a Mediterranean trader — "the
most plausible path from Manggarai rural community to European urban center per Indian Ocean and
Mediterranean trade-network record" [SRC: T3_Supporting # §5.1]. The caci-technique layer of this history is
the Erb dependency.
This is the load-bearing persona fact for a come_and_go companion — see §3.

who-frame; pre-Ch-38 she carries only "an organized power exists," unnamed). teaching_role — caci melee
peer (teaches body-grammar; not a trade home — see §2). six_option_register — colors the options
terse/defiant/curious; her Detached and Defiant registers are strong, her verbal-Sympathetic register almost
absent (she shows warmth in action, not words). assimilation_stance — the witness who *keeps the secret
and stays* — the richest single hook, §5. companion_or_familiar_mechanics — come_and_go on THE BOND;
deferred per-slot to the registry.
"Ana" is an EXISTING STAGED NAME (rowed CHAR_0017; used at Ch 3/27/28/41/44/55/61/74/75) — it is not a
name I am minting. One low-priority naming-canon item for Josh: a *Manggarai-authenticity screen on "Ana"*
per docs/NAMING_METHOD.md (it reads as a Portuguese-Catholic given name, which the Flores colonial-Catholic
stratum plausibly grounds — but the screen is Josh's to ratify) [CARDINAL — JOSH, low priority].

Ana is the highest-damage melee combatant in any party she is in; her caci is superior to the
protagonist's at thirty years of focused training; and — canonically — she has **no vril ability and is
vulnerable to supernatural threats** [SRC: T3_Supporting # §5.1]. In the real-science + vril combat grammar
this is a designed complementarity, not a weakness to paper over:
the shield first, turn each cracking arc on the clean parry, trade to the whip for the answering pass)
[SRC: CH_03.md # CH03_B09]. In a party whose every other member routes through vril, Ana is the verb that
needs no substrate — the ally who can act inside a vril-null or vril-hostile field.
mortal member, she is the soft target: the Blind-Spot's watch *turns onto Ana* from Ch 46, and at Ch 61 the
family binds a mara/drekavac and *sets it on her* — she is "genuinely marked, hunted, and wounded, nearly
taken, before she survives on her own fought-for terms" [SRC: CH_55.md # BE_0055_S2; CH_61.md # CH61_B08].
The one who cannot fight the supernatural is exactly who the supernatural is aimed at. This is *earned*
vulnerability, and it is where her House-entanglement lives (§5).
vril-plane, Ana — who cannot follow — guards the vulnerable physical body ("Ana's body-guarding contract
established," SQ10) [SRC: CH_44.md # CH44_B06, SQ10]. The non-vril blade warding the flesh while the
vril-adept's consciousness is away is the cleanest possible expression of the two of them as complements.
domestic station — she is restless and self-directed (come_and_go), so "the party's blade where she is its
eyes" [SRC: CH_27.md # CH27_B01] is her station: point of the away-team, not keeper of a hearth.
Ana roots no trade home — she is a blade, not a craftsperson, and inventing a trade lane for her would be
padding. Her only trade-adjacent seam is the caci martial-history thread (SQ2), the living-martial-history
substrate she embodies [SRC: CH_03.md # SQ2]. Recommendation: keep her a combat *peer*, not a trade *teacher*
— the one core-adjacent companion who wires into combat and bond but not the trade economy. That is a feature
(role-distinctness), and it keeps her clear of the Erb-blocked caci-*technique* authoring until the book lands.
She teaches the protagonist body-grammar and the fair-contest ethic — the first contest the protagonist
ever fought "for a place instead of a life" is Ana's caci round [SRC: CH_03.md # body prose]. The protagonist
gives Ana, across decades, the one thing her terseness never asks for: *a person worth re-choosing.* And the
Ch-61 wound teaches them both the harder lesson — that Ana is "no longer only hers to keep safe"
[SRC: CH_61.md # CH61_B12]: the always-competent protagonist cannot protect her cleanly, and Ana's competence
is not a wall against everything. The protector/protected mold breaks on both sides.

Join trigger [CARDINAL — JOSH; recommendation]: `root_Ch03_peer → rejoin_Ch27_bodyguard →
rejoin_for_duration_Ch41`. Her *first travelling* join is Ch 27 (the Mediterranean reunion); her *permanent*
rejoin is Ch 41.
This is the heart of the assignment, and the answer is structural, not incidental. **Ntala and Ana are the
spine's two poles of loyalty, and the contrast is the point:**
proves love by *never leaving*. She is the friend you were given.
the protagonist across decades. She proves love by *leaving and returning.*
A for_life/sticky companion structurally *cannot* give the bond ladder its return-texture — you cannot
feel the warmth of a homecoming from someone who never left. Ana's absences are not gaps to be filled; they
are what *makes her returns mean something.* Her Ch-41 line is the emotional core of the whole model — she
says, "awkwardly and at cost, that she was wrong to go or wrong to stay away, she is not sure which, only that
she means to stay; then picks up a blade and falls in at her left, which is the most Ana will ever say about
it" [SRC: CH_41.md # CH41_B07]. Read against her three-sentence ceiling, that is the largest emotional
expenditure in her arc. The come_and_go model's meaning IS this: a friendship that has to be re-chosen,
and each re-choosing costs her something to admit. Every reunion the bond ladder registers (Ch 27, Ch 41) is
a person *deciding you are worth the road back.*
The T3 canon even wires her returns to the protagonist's integrity: at the reunion her warmth is
world-state-reactive — Good: "she says her mother would have known what the protagonist is"; Evil: "she says
nothing and checks weapon grip instead" [SRC: T3_Supporting # §5.1]. Her coming-back is *conditional on who
you have become* — which is the come_and_go rhythm and the integrity axis fused into one tell.
come_and_go [PINNED / ratified].honor_and_freeing_the_bound —the caci fair-contest ethic (a scored courtesy, never a slaughter) fused with the free-not-force pole the
spine repeatedly stages through her: she is at the protagonist's side to *free* the ludus fighters
[SRC: CH_28.md # freeing the ludus], to *break the forcing rather than the forced things* and let the
captured echoes go free [SRC: CH_55.md # CH55_B06], to *cut the binding* and free the bound mara
[SRC: CH_61.md # FORK_CH61_B]. Her pole is: fight fair, free the captured, never become the forcer.
major_opposition (trigger 60). Note the ratified drift: the WS7 build plan proposed circumstance_only for her, and the live row reads major_opposition
[SRC: Foundation B §2]. I recommend keeping major_opposition, because the spine actually *builds* an
integrity-driven withdrawal for her (the Ch-55/56 corrosive branch, below) — circumstance_only would
contradict the one CL-02 exemplar the whole system rests on. Flag for Josh's ratification.

Ana is the spine's single built instance of companion-loyalty-IS-integrity (CL-02 / IR-3 — "the FIRST
integrity-driven companion leave/draw," candidate Ana, elsewhere "currently unbuilt anywhere")

makes her path-reads legible and *already staged*:

stays out of habit, not warmth.

Ch 55→56 (the two-node rule), she withdraws (the Ch-55/56 IR-3 transition foundations name). Her
WAVERING window is the Ch-55 corrosive read itself (the trigger-15 warning); the departure lands if the
forcing pattern *holds*.
is draw-flavored**: she "has been following the trail of what she recognized as the protagonist's
activities" and "was curious where it was going" [SRC: T3_Supporting # §5.1]. On the good path her return is
the reward of who the protagonist has been becoming.
No-dead-end [PINNED — honored]: her melee slot is explicitly covered by Wenceslao Chaile (CHAR_0148)
when she withdraws, so no beat walls and no fight becomes unwinnable [SRC: Foundation A; CH_55.md # Key ally
NPCs]. Every DEPARTED event ships a non-empty rerouted_paths. Losing Ana reshapes the party's texture and
costs the protagonist the person who freely chose them — it never blocks the game.

The relationship arc — the friendship that must be re-chosen. Ntala is the fated echo; Ana is the freely
given heart. She is the proof that the protagonist — a hidden elf who can be loved by no one for what she is —
can be *chosen* by someone with every option to leave. Her terseness (three sentences, ever) makes the choice
louder than any speech: she does not *say* she loves you; she *keeps coming back and falls in at your left.*
The House entanglement — the personal cost made flesh. Ana is how the family learns to "spend anyone,
reach through anyone" [SRC: CH_61.md # body prose]. Because she is the mortal, non-vril, beloved blade, she is
the family's chosen lever: the Blind-Spot's watch turns onto her (Ch 46), the mara is bound and set on her
(Ch 61), and the protagonist's central Ch-61 realization — that the family will hurt the people she loves —
crystallizes *through Ana's wound*. She is where the antagonist stops being an abstraction and becomes a hand
that reaches for your friend's throat.
The assimilation-witness cost — the witness who stays. Ana is the pole opposite the local guide you hide
*from*: she is the one who *nearly knows what you are and stays anyway* ("my mother would have known what you
are"). She witnesses the concealment and keeps the secret — which is what the assimilation mechanic *buys*: a
person who does not need you to be human. But she is also the witness whose belief you can *violate*: on the
corrosive path she watches the protagonist become the forcer — the thing the caci ethic and the
free-the-bound pole most despise — and she leaves. The assimilation cost through Ana is the sharpest in the
game: she is the one you cannot hide the *corruption* from, because she chose to stay for who you were.
The growth arc. Wary assigned teacher (resentment → competitive fascination, Ch 3) → guarded, glad,
adult-awkward reunion (Ch 27) → the woman who admits at cost that leaving was wrong (Ch 41) → the wounded
survivor with her agency intact who is "no longer only hers to keep safe" (Ch 61) → the mortal blade who
crosses every otherworld and reaches the fairy-realm door (Ch 74-75). She grows from someone *assigned* to the
protagonist into someone who *chooses* her, and finally into someone the protagonist cannot fully protect and
must let be a peer, not a ward.
Why the game is richer with her. She gives the bond ladder its return-texture (impossible from a
never-leaver); combat its pure-physics anchor and designed vulnerability; the House its **most human
weapon; the integrity system its one built leave/draw exemplar**; the assimilation mechanic its
witness-who-stays pole; and the endgame its most improbable crosser — the mortal with no birthright
and no vril who walks into the otherworld on nothing but the bond. Cut Ana and five ratified systems lose
their exemplar at once. She does not merely clear the bar; she is load-bearing to it.

4. The T3-vs-spine characterization reconciliation. T3 canon: "assigned against her will… resentment
shifts to competitive fascination after the accidental vril-enhanced strike." The Ch-3 spine softens this
to a warm age-peer who "vouches for the outsider." Proposed reconciliation: restore the T3 seed — stage
the initial wariness/assigned-teacher friction, and let the vouching arrive *after* she reads the
protagonist's caci skill (the competitive-fascination shift), which enriches her without contradicting
either source. Characterization canon = Josh's.
5. Does Ana cross the Ch-65 lock into the endgame realms — and by what justification? She is *staged*
present through Ch 74-75 (the World-Tree door, the fairy-realm homecoming), yet she is mortal, non-vril,
and has no birthright — the Party-Structure funnel says only the protagonist + the childhood familiar are
proven crossers. Her crossing is currently justified by nothing but the bond. This is a genuine canon fork:
ratify *how* the mortal blade rides the Realm Road (bond-fated crosser? a cost paid? a vulnerability that
is itself the drama?), or adjust her endgame presence. World + characterization canon = Josh's.
6. Manggarai-authenticity screen on the name "Ana" (low priority) — existing staged name; a NAMING_METHOD
real-name/culture screen if Josh wants it ratified.
Ana's combat-identity depth and her belief-pole grounding are book-processing-BLOCKED here. Author her now
at correct-and-deepenable weight; do not invent caci technique the corpus cannot ground
