Reputation, Prestige & the Adaptive Nemesis (Josh, 2026-07-13)

The design of four interlocking systems Josh specified from WoW-Vanilla Exalted love: (A) the reputation / Exalted ladder + the trade-off-faction optimization; (B) the enemy/antagonist-Exalted easter eggs → easter-egg epilogue endings; (C) prestige + New Game+; (D) the memory-driven adaptive Nemesis AI with a hard anti-tilt floor. Creative-within-vision; composes with T1_Integrity_Paths worldstates, the completionist L2 layer (layer-model-v2), the entity-persona + no-dead-end system, the attackability/consequence + companion systems, and the generative-entity/Nemesis vision (RUNTIME_GENERATIVE_LAYER, deterministic-first, Σ-bounded, canon-graph-guardrailed). Proposal-first; numerical tuning flagged for Fable-5.
A. Reputation / Faction standing — the Exalted ladder
Every culture/faction carries a reputation track (Hostile → Neutral → Friendly → Honored → Revered → Exalted, WoW-tier shape). Integrity band, actions, quests, trade, and the assimilation-integrity choices move it. Reputation is per-faction, persistent, and worldstate-visible (T1_Integrity_Paths).
EXALTED reward (the completionist payoff): each culture's Exalted unlocks a signature, culture-authentic reward — a mount or familiar line, a master recipe or technique, a home-base upgrade, a title, a cosmetic, or a unique quest. Exalted-with-ALL-cultures is a meta completionist achievement with a capstone reward (the "streaming-worthy" L2 flex). Rewards are earned mastery, never pay-gated.
This is an L2 completionist system: it never hard-gates main progression (no-dead-end), but it is the deep optional mastery lane a completionist lives in.
B. The trade-off-faction optimization — the "mathematical trick," INTENDED not patched
Josh loved reaching Exalted even with OPPOSING factions by ordering actions so one gains more than the other loses. Design intent: this is a DESIGNED completionist skill-path, preserved and rewarded, never treated as an exploit to remove.
Some faction PAIRS are trade-off (mutually opposed): gaining with A normally costs with B. But asymmetric-rep actions exist — an action that grants +more to A than it removes from B, a shared-cause quest that lifts BOTH, or a diplomacy/integrity bridge that converts hostility. A player who plans the SEQUENCE can net positive on both and reach Exalted with a pair that looks impossible.
It is INTENDED, NARROW, and EARNED: only the trade-off pairs support it; it requires real planning (the ordering puzzle), and the hardest bridges unlock only for a high-integrity / diplomat-leaning build or via discovered shared-cause quests. Reaching "the impossible peace" (Exalted with a trade-off pair) grants a hidden achievement + a unique reward.
Rewards INTELLIGENCE (Pillar 13 — The Real-Systems Immersive-Sim): the optimization is a real, learnable planning problem, the reputation analog of "knowing what to combine." The joy of discovering the sequence is the feature.
C. Enemy / antagonist Exalted — the easter-egg layer
Deeply hidden ways exist to reach Exalted (or its analog — turned / redeemed / infiltrated-to-the-core / sworn-in) with your ENEMIES and the ANTAGONIST factions (the Velheim apparatus, the counter-campaign desk-directors). This is easter-egg tier — hard to discover, like the gladiator sneak-out; a mastery flex, not a signposted track.
Reaching enemy-Exalted unlocks EASTER-EGG EPILOGUE ENDINGS: alternate epilogues that play when you return to the persistent post-game world and continue, OR when you start a New Game+ on the easter-egg difficulty.
REVEAL-DISCIPLINE FIREWALL: the antagonist-rep path can never leak the endgame reveal early. The hidden enemy-Exalted track only becomes legible/available AFTER the reveal (Ch 76+, when the family/pattern is named) or in post-game — before then the player can build unease/rep-with-a-broker but never "Exalted with the House of Velheim." The reveal ladder is untouched.
D. Prestige & New Game+ — the loop
Completing the game on the HARD setting (the easter-egg difficulty, unlocked by the enemy-Exalted easter eggs and/or hard-completion) grants a ONE-TIME character PRESTIGE — a permanent prestige advantage carried into New Game+.
The prestige advantage is GENUINELY NECESSARY to complete the harder NG+ difficulty: NG+ is tuned assuming the prestige edge, so the prestige is load-bearing earned power, never a cosmetic badge. The loop: beat hard → earn prestige → the prestige lets you take on the even-harder NG+ (deeper prestige tiers can extend the loop).
NG+ carry-forward: selected reputation, companions, tamed/bred creatures, and mastery persist into NG+ (heirloom-style), so the completionist's investment travels. The easter-egg epilogue endings + the NG+ difficulty are the post-game's two doors.
E. The adaptive Nemesis AI — memory-driven, with a hard anti-tilt floor
The generative-entity/Nemesis vision made concrete for difficulty, extending the already-canon "boss that reads your habits" (Composure broken by any of seven modes; the Withdrawal clock) into cross-death memory and NG+ escalation.
Enemies and bosses RETAIN MEMORY and LEARN between your deaths:
They remember when you got CLOSE to defeating them and shore up that near-win path.
They remember HOW you START battles (your opener) and pre-empt / counter / vary against it.
The same tactics do not work every time — the player must change up their playstyle. Clearing a boss stays satisfyingly hard because it refuses to be solved by rote.
In the hard / NG+ mode the AI reasoning gets stronger (deeper strategy-token reasoning, more of the closed kit brought to bear).
THE ANTI-TILT FLOOR (Josh's hard constraint: never make someone quit; never "harder every failure until they can never win"):
Bounded adaptation. The AI selects from a CLOSED, FAIR grammar (the Σ-bounded selector, canon-graph-guardrailed) — it re-sequences, counters, and varies within its legitimate kit; it never invents unfair new powers or off-grammar stats.
Variety, not inflation. Difficulty is answer-pruning + smarter play (Pillar 13), NEVER a per-death HP/damage spiral. Repeated failure changes WHAT the boss does, not how many unfair numbers it has.
The mercy floor. Repeated failure never makes the encounter strictly harder each time; it VARIES so a fresh approach can win, and after a run of deaths the boss may telegraph an extra tell (a readable opening) rather than escalating — so no one hits an unwinnable wall. The target feeling is "genuinely frustrating, then triumphant," never "hopeless."
It teaches mastery. The player who ADAPTS (changes opener, varies playstyle) beats it; the player who repeats the same rote gets countered. The AI is a teacher of variation, not a tilt machine.
Wiring targets (WS7) + Fable-5 tuning
Wire reputation tracks + the trade-off-pair graph + asymmetric-rep actions + shared-cause quests into the faction/questline registries + T1_Integrity_Paths worldstates; the enemy-Exalted easter-egg track gated behind the reveal (post-Ch-76 / post-game).
Wire prestige + NG+ carry-forward + the easter-egg epilogue endings into the save-state / worldstate model.
Wire the adaptive Nemesis onto the existing boss-reads-habits system + the RUNTIME_GENERATIVE_LAYER (deterministic-first, on-device reasoning, Σ-bounded); the cross-death memory persists per-boss.
Fable-5 / Josh-final-yes numerical: the reputation tier thresholds + asymmetric-rep values (which make the trade-off optimization possible without being trivial); the per-culture Exalted reward set; the prestige advantage's exact magnitude + how load-bearing NG+ makes it; the Nemesis adaptation bounds + the mercy-floor curve (the tuning that keeps it hard-but-never-hopeless).
