System Design Proposal — Twelve-Tier Mastery Reconciliation

CANON SUBORDINATION — this document is PROPOSAL-TIER: it serves canon and never outranks it.
The canon: the CVD · the T1 foundation docs · the T0 registries (registries/) · the spine
(docs/spine/CH_*.md) · the region pages (_source/02_Tier_2_Region_Pages/). Authority order: docs/DOC_MAP.md § 0.
Canon served (scanned from this document's own citations — widen it by hand where it is thin):
CVD §12 · CVD §17 · T0_Quest_Definition_Registry · T0_Schema_Dictionary · T0_Trade_Registry
READ THAT CANON FIRST — open it and derive from it before you build anything from this document.
If this document disagrees with canon, CANON WINS and this document is the defect — fix the
document, never the canon. Nothing here is applied until it is ratified into canon.

Status: PROPOSAL (design-locked recommendation + Josh-exclusive forks)

Author: Opus 4.8, principal systems + canon architect pass

Date: 2026-07-13

Scope: reconcile the "twelve-tier" label vs the ten enumerated grades; resolve the live CVD/ABIL/Vril-vs-Trades numbering collision; specify the unified mastery progression to AAA depth.

Supersedes-in-part: DECISION_DOSSIER §16 (Option A). This proposal is a strict enhancement of that analysis — see "What the earlier analysis missed."

0. TL;DR

---

1. Vision

The mastery ladder is one of the twelve locked pillars (Pillar 12, three-layer engagement) and the single most cross-cutting system in the game: every developable capability — 10 trades, 72 weapon proficiencies, 185 abilities across 8 elements, familiar bond, language fluency, inscription, astral projection, and the six attributes — climbs the same ladder, so a milestone *feels* identical whether you got it in Herbalism or in a war-hammer. That universality is the whole point: it is what lets a 30M-word game keep one legible progression grammar across 77 chapters and three tiers of product.

The reconciliation is not cosmetic. It decides, permanently, what the number after the word "Tier" means for every downstream agent authoring quest gates, ability thresholds, registry rows, and spine beats for the next decade of build. Get it wrong and you get phantom Tier 11 gates, mis-counted mastery milestones, and vril-perception unlocking at the wrong grade. Get it right and the two most distinctive beats in the whole progression — the Portal Grade and the crossing of the Abyss — become the addictive, novel, genuinely-Hermetic hook that no other ARPG ships.

The enhanced vision: **ten grades you *become*, twelve gates you *cross*.** The ten grades are your identity ("I am an Adeptus Minor of the forge"). The twelve gates are the initiations — and the two extra gates, the pivots between Orders, are ego-death rites, not stat bumps. That duality is the design, and it is already latent in the canon; this proposal names it.

2. The design and the loop

2.1 The two axes (the core model)

AxisWhat it countsCountNumberingOwns
Grade (a.k.a. "Tier", the named rank)Who the practitioner *is*10Tier 1 Neophyte … Tier 10 MagusCVD §12.1, ABIL §2, Vril §9
Gate (the quest-unlock event)What the practitioner must *cross*12Gate 1 … Gate 12Trades §4, T0_Trade_Registry

The two axes map deterministically. Ten of the twelve gates are the entry-rites into the ten grades. The remaining two gates are the liminal pivots between Orders — thresholds you cross *between* grades, which is exactly how the Golden Dawn / Hermetic source tradition treats the Portal Grade and the crossing of the Abyss (Daath). They are transitions, not ranks — so they are gates, not grades.

2.2 The canonical Grade↔Gate map (this is the reconciliation)

NUM. BAND GRADE (Tier N, PRESERVED) GATE (Gate N, Trades) ORDER
1–9 Tier 1 Neophyte Gate 1 Neophyte First / Outer
10–29 Tier 2 Zelator Gate 2 Zelator First / Outer
30–49 Tier 3 Theoricus Gate 3 Theoricus First / Outer
50–69 Tier 4 Practicus Gate 4 Practicus First / Outer
70–99 Tier 5 Philosophus Gate 5 Philosophus First / Outer
── PIVOT ── (no grade; a crossing) Gate 6 Portal Grade Outer→Inner pivot
100 Tier 6 Adeptus Minor Gate 7 Adeptus Minor Second / Inner
101–150 Tier 7 Adeptus Major Gate 8 Adeptus Major Second / Inner
151–199 Tier 8 Adeptus Exemptus Gate 9 Adeptus Exemptus Second / Inner
── PIVOT ── (no grade; a crossing) Gate 10 Babe of the Abyss Inner→Third pivot
200 Tier 9 Magister Templi Gate 11 Magister Templi Third / Prestige
200+ Tier 10 Magus Gate 12 Magus Third / MMO endgame

Read the collision off this table: Adeptus Minor is Grade Tier 6 and Gate 7. Both true; different axes. Everything that says "Tier 6 Adeptus Minor" (CVD, ABIL, Vril Sight, the D-06 age model, Hard-Lines HL_0028/HL_0017) stays correct. Everything that says "Gate 7 / tier_7_adeptus_minor" (Trades §4, the registry) stays correct. The only thing that was ever wrong was the *absence of a stated axis*.

2.3 Why "twelve-tier" is already literally true

CVD §17.5 locks the string "twelve-tier Hermetic mastery framework" as a hard line. That string is defensible as-is under Option D, because the framework genuinely has twelve gates. But it is defensible for a *real, load-bearing* reason (twelve quest-unlock events, one of which generates the 120-gate canon), not merely as Golden-Dawn provenance flavor. The label points at the gate axis. "Ten accessible tiers" (ABIL §2, verbatim) points at the grade axis. Both already exist in canon; Option D just *names the axes* so they stop reading as a contradiction.

2.4 The moment-to-moment loop (AAA depth)

Every capability runs the same loop, and the loop's *shape* is what makes 185 abilities and 120 trade gates feel like one system:

1. Earn numerical XP through play (un-respec-able; ~13M XP to cap a capability at numerical 99 per the runesque curve). This is the grind spine — it accrues passively from *doing the thing*.

2. Hit a grade threshold → the numerical ceiling locks you until you complete that grade's quest-unlock gate. Per CVD §17.5 hard line: *numerical alone is never enough.* Mining at 100 XP with "all the experience in the world" still caps at 99 until the Adept-initiation questline is done. Knowledge + experience must combine. This is the anti-idle, anti-slop mechanic: you cannot buy your way past a grade, you must *be initiated*.

3. On grade-up, collect Mastery Points (the discretionary, respec-able currency: schedule 1·1·2·2·3·5·5·5 = 24 across Outer+Inner for one capability; +10 at Magister Templi prestige) and auto-unlock that grade's questline-completed abilities.

4. At the two Order boundaries, hit a pivot gate — the Portal Grade (after Philosophus / numerical 99) and the crossing of the Abyss / Babe of the Abyss (after Adeptus Exemptus / numerical 199). These are not rank-ups. They are optional, boundary-reversible ceremonies you may decline indefinitely (canon: "players may remain at numerical 99 indefinitely without taking the Portal Grade quest"). They are the threshold rites that gate entry into the next Order — and the Adeptus Minor crossing is where substrate perception switches on (Vril Sight Tier 6). This is the loop's dramatic punctuation.

2.5 How the two pivots become the hook (see §7)

The Portal Grade and the Babe of the Abyss are the design's crown jewels. Ordinary ARPGs gate progression with a stat wall or a paywall of grind. Here the two Order-boundaries are diegetic Hermetic initiations — the trade master's full lineage-transmission ceremony (Portal) and a *letting-go of Inner-Order identity* (the Abyss). They are where all three engagement layers fire at once: L1 sees a clean, ceremonious milestone; L2 recognizes the authentic Golden Dawn threshold and *smiles*; L3 has substrate perception literally come online. That triple-fire is the pillar-12 payoff made mechanical.

4. Alternatives considered (steelmanned)

The seed named A/B/C/D. Full space, each steelmanned, then judged against (a) the 120-gate math, (b) the D-06 tier-6 model, (c) the live registry-vs-CVD collision, (d) the §17.5 hard-line string, (e) drift/edit blast-radius.

Option A — Preserve verbatim + ledger note (the current DECISION_DOSSIER §16 recommendation).

Option B — Make it literally twelve grades (promote Portal + Babe of the Abyss to full named tiers; renumber Adeptus Minor→Tier 7 … Magus→Tier 12; optionally add Tier 0 / Ipsissimus).

Option C — Rename the framework to "ten-tier."

Option D — Dual namespace: ten Grades (Tier), twelve Gates (Gate). RECOMMENDED.

Recommendation: D, implemented as "A's discipline (touch canon minimally, document the invariant) + the axis-split that A omitted." It is the only option that is both non-destructive *and* actually resolves the numbering collision.

5. Forks for Josh (options + recommendation)

This is numerical/naming/§17 canon → Josh rules. Four decisions; the first is the load-bearing one.

Fork 1 — Adopt the dual-namespace (Grade=10 / Gate=12) as the canonical reconciliation?

Fork 2 — The surface label: keep "twelve-tier," or promote "Gate" language?

Fork 3 — Should CVD §12.1's enumerated list *name the two pivots as Gates 6 and 10*?

Fork 4 — Reject Option B's Tier 0 / Ipsissimus reserved headroom?

6. Opus-can-spec-now vs Fable-5 handoff

OPUS-CAN-SPEC-NOW (design lock + non-canon wiring, this session, on Josh's Fork-1 yes)

1. Lock the dual-namespace model (this doc §2.1–2.2) as the canonical spec: Grade axis (10, preserved) + Gate axis (12, Trades).

2. Publish the Grade↔Gate map (§2.2 table) as the single disambiguation reference every future agent cites.

3. Update the non-canon ledger: flip CLAUDE.md Known-issue #2 from "preserve verbatim, flag only" to RESOLVED (Option D) with the axis definition + the explicit note that tier_N registry sub-keys are gate indices, so no agent "fixes" tier_7_adeptus_minor into tier_6.

4. Update DECISION_DOSSIER §16 to record Option D superseding Option A, with the Trades-gate evidence and the registry-collision finding.

5. Add the spine load-manifest / cascade note: per-chapter agents count twelve gates over ten grades; substrate perception at Grade Tier 6 = Gate 7; no Tier 11/12 grade exists.

6. Schema-dictionary clarification (non-data): annotate T0_Schema_Dictionary that twelve_tier_quest_gates sub-keys tier_N_<abbr> are gate ordinals (1–12), not grade ordinals — the terminological fix that closes the collision without touching row data.

7. The AAA / addictive hook

Ten grades you become; twelve gates you cross — and two of those gates are ego-deaths, not level-ups.

Every other ARPG punctuates progression with a stat wall or a grind gate. *Humanity* punctuates it with two authentic Hermetic threshold rites at the Order boundaries: the Portal Grade (Outer→Inner) and the crossing of the Abyss / Babe of the Abyss (Inner→Third). They are:

And it is not vaporware — the twelve-gate structure is already built in Trades §4 and the T0 registry. Option D doesn't invent the hook; it *names* it so the rest of the build can lean into it. That is the whole move: the best thing in this system was already latent in the canon, colliding with itself for want of one word — "gate."
