Design proposal + targeted Fable-5 brief. Author: Opus (principal systems/canon). Date 2026-07-13.
Status: DRAFT for Josh ruling on the five forks in §5, then hand §7 to Fable 5.
Josh's instruction (#5): "no idea... leave it to Fable 5, make sure we STRUCTURE it properly so
Fable 5 can handle it and maybe do more research on it and try to provide some INSTRUCTION to help
the ask stay TARGETED." This doc does not author Ntala's origin. It (1) defines the DESIGN
SPACE, (2) maps the CONSTRAINTS/firewalls Fable 5 must honor, and (3) writes the targeted, scoped
Fable-5 brief. The deliverable IS the handoff (§7).

Ntala — Mama Klara's child, canonical companion CHAR_0002 (name ruled Josh 2026-07-12; Manggarai
"star," gender-neutral so it serves the player-chosen gender with no forking) — watched the
protagonist silently from Ch 3, left anonymous notes across Ch 3–12, joined at Ch 13, and became the
lifelong custodian of the journal that is the game's second protagonist. Their stated motive
(T3_Core §3.4) is "to find out what their mother recognized in the protagonist that she never
explained." The Fable-5 story review (docs/review/FINDINGS.md #4/#6) flagged that this is seeded
hard at Ch 3 ("a watching that will not resolve for ten chapters") and never paid: why they
watched, why they followed a stranger across half a world, whose child they are and what they wanted
— no node resolves it. Josh's call: don't author it here; structure it so Fable 5 can, and keep the
ask narrow. This doc's central move is the firewall that makes the ask safe to answer at all
(§4.1): Ntala's mystery can be paid without ever paying Mama Klara's — and it must be.
---
Every reveal in this game is about what the protagonist *is*: the sealed letter (Ch 8), the
Architect's fairy-tongue (Ch 17), the five components and the name (Ch 38), and — locked at the
bottom — the Grand Sage waterfall (Ch 76–77), where the protagonist learns they are their own
collective consciousness reflected back. That is the cosmic axis, and it is inviolate.
The healer's-child mystery is the game's human counter-axis, and its whole value is that it runs
in the *opposite* direction. It does not ask *what are you*. It asks *who is this person who chose,
at nine years old, to witness your entire life, and never once asked you to be anything you already
weren't* — and it answers that question with a person, on the page, in a voice, long before the
cosmic axis pays. When Ch 77 finally says "God is you," the line lands not as cold metaphysics but
as the completion of a warmth the player has already felt from the one human who saw them without a
category — the same seeing Mama Klara did at Ch 3 (§7.6) and could not name, carried forward by her
child who could not name it either, and stopped needing to. The human mystery is the emotional
on-ramp to the thesis. Paying it makes the arc's central friendship a relationship instead of a
prop, and makes the ending *earned at human scale* before it is earned at cosmic scale.
The design tenet: **the game answers "who witnessed you" before it answers "what are you," and the
human answer is what lets the cosmic answer be recognition instead of information.**
---
The mystery is not a new system; it is an existing three-act structure with a missing third act.
Fable 5 is being handed the third act only.
sleeps; the protagonist doesn't know who wrote them (T3_Core §3.3; spine CH_03 "the healer's-child
watching begins"). This is the arc's first human-character mystery (SQ4 Mystery/Detective seeds at
Ch 3). It is retro-contextualized by the Ch 13 join, per §3.3. Loop: every Ch 4–12 chapter,
the player finds documentation they did not place — an ambient recurring hook.
Africa) stating the maternal-recognition motive; the journal activates; at Ch 16 (Indus) they
decode script by *documented human scholarship, not vril* — "You read the weight beneath the
marks. I watched which marks came together. They point to each other" (§3.6). This is the arc's
best-rated relationship beat (FINDINGS Area 10). The player learns Ntala is a **parallel
intelligence**, not the protagonist's tool.
Ch-3 promise (one scene, ≤Ch 38, where why-they-followed lands in their own voice) or unseed
it ("will not resolve" invites resolution). The scene-time pilot (P5 / FINDINGS #10) sanctions
exactly one dropped-into-scene spoken line for Ntala; the natural place to spend it is here.
The debt is precise and small: one scene, one spoken line, and a light retro-thread through the
Ch 3–12 notes so the payoff reads as harvested rather than announced. That is the entire Fable-5
scope. Everything else in this doc exists to make that scene safe and targeted.
---
The canonical seed constrains but does not determine: §3.4 fixes the *stated* motive ("find out what
mother recognized"), but a stated motive is not the same as the *true* reason someone attaches to a
stranger for a lifetime — the gap between them is exactly the mystery. Below are the plausible
directions for the true reason, each of which can be delivered while leaving the maternal
recognition unresolved (§4.1). Fable 5 selects one, or a composite.
the protagonist walked on: *watch this one; I cannot follow, you can.* Ntala follows to discharge a
mother's unfinished seeing. Pays the relationship (a daughter/son carrying a parent's incomplete
act) without stating *what* the mother saw. Risk: leans on Mama Klara, who is a hard never-reappear
lock — the charge must be memory, never a returning scene.
*themself*: a person who is alone in *how they perceive* the world. Ntala's Ch 16 non-vril decode
is not a party trick — it is a lifelong uncanny apartness (they see structure others miss; §3.2
"constitutionally incapable of saying a general thing"). They followed because the protagonist was
the first other person as alone in their seeing as Ntala has always been. Pays as human kinship;
zero thesis surface. Strongest single option.
the protagonist was the first life *large enough to be worth the whole record*. The journal is the
answer. They followed to find a subject equal to their vocation and found a friend instead. Ties
the payoff to the object the arc already treats as its co-protagonist (FINDINGS Area 6).
*cannot* do what their mother did. They follow to see the depleted one made whole, completing a
cure their mother began but a single ritual could not finish. Natural landing at Ch 38
(stabilization), where the protagonist is finally restored. Risk: crowds the Ch 38 midpoint.
the protagonist is how they refuse a second loss, or metabolize a first. Composes with the arc's
grief theme but risks over-determining a companion the review already wants *lighter and warmer*,
not sadder (FINDINGS #5).
the *payoff structure* is: Ntala set out to learn what their mother saw, never learned it, and
discovered somewhere on the road that the following — the record, the bond — had become the point.
The line they finally say is not "here is what my mother recognized" but "here is why I stopped
needing to know." This structure is what lets any of A–E resolve the *human* question while leaving
the *maternal* question permanently open, honoring §7.4 verbatim.
**Recommendation (Fable 5 free to override): compose B + C inside the F structure, with A as an
optional grace-note.** B answers *why they attached* (kinship of perception), C answers *why they
stayed and recorded* (the vocation found its subject), F is the *shape* that keeps Mama Klara's
recognition sealed. The maternal question stays a felt weight forever; what gets paid is Ntala's own
interiority. This is the composite that pays the most debt for the least canon risk.
---
This is the load-bearing constraint and the reason the ask is safe at all.
canonically never stated in the arc... Deliberate restraint, not deferred revelation. The mystery
is not resolved in the player-facing arc. Her understanding remains hers." Fable 5 may not
author what Mama Klara saw, at any node, in any register.
stated motive (§3.4) is the *hook*; the paid answer is Ntala's *own* reason for attaching and
staying — which they can give truthfully without ever having learned, or telling, what their
mother recognized. The F-structure (§3) is the mechanism: they say why they stopped needing the
maternal answer, not the maternal answer.
adjacent to the protagonist's true nature — the same "seeing accurately without conceptual
framework" that §7.6 explicitly names as "a foundational note in the Grand Sage arc." If Fable 5
ever *resolved* the maternal recognition, it would risk a retroactive-sense leak toward the Ch
76–77 thesis (a §8.10 hard-rule violation: "Never use framing that would retroactively make sense
only after the reveal"). Keeping the maternal question sealed keeps the thesis sealed. **The two
firewalls are the same firewall.**
The Grand Sage is the protagonist's own collective consciousness (§8.1); its identity surfaces
nowhere before Ch 76–77. Ntala's payoff lands ≤Ch 38, under whichever reveal-rung is live at its
node. The scene must:
sense only post-reveal** (§8.10). Ntala may reference the protagonist's *perceptible* difference
(the stillness, the way they read the world) — the same register Mama Klara used at Ch 3 ("a
silence that doesn't belong to this world") — but must never gloss it toward *what the protagonist
is*.
protagonist's fairy-realm origin (the Ch 8 letter, contextualized; the Architect at Ch 17 is
imminent), but Ntala is a *human companion* whose knowledge is behavioral and affectionate, not
metaphysical. Ntala perceives the protagonist as *uncanny and kindred*, not as *elven-royal* and
never as *collective-consciousness*. Keep their register human throughout.
concern for the Velheim pattern here (Ntala's scene is relationship, not antagonist), but the same
reflex applies: no agent-noun for the protagonist's nature. Ntala names a *person*, never a
category.
The withholding here is a house style, not just a rule. Mama Klara "does not interpret. She
observes. She treats. She lets them go" (§7.6). Ntala inherits it: §3.2 — "They observe. They
record... They do not assume they know what things mean... constitutionally incapable of saying a
general thing when a specific thing is available. They never speak in exposition." The payoff scene
must therefore **pay the mystery in the register of a specific, observed thing, not a confession or
a monologue.** One concrete sentence about a real moment on the road does more than any speech about
feelings. The mystery resolves the way this game resolves everything: shown, small, exact.
(§3.8), and their Ch-65 threshold stay-or-go is a real branch (FINDINGS #4b flags it is resolved
off-page today). The origin payoff must land at a node where Ntala is reliably present on **all
live paths — which argues for a node before Ch 23** (so the scene exists even on runs where
Ntala later leaves), or for authoring a path-variant. Ch 16 satisfies this cleanly (pre-23,
Ntala present on every path).
surface is touched by any of this. No cardinal count changes. (77 ch / 22 threads / 72 weapons
/ 10 trades / 185 abilities / 33 legendary species / 22 familiar slots / 12-tier mastery all
untouched — this is pure character prose.)
scene-time and no quoted dialogue in 79 nodes (FINDINGS Area 8). The origin scene must sit inside
that voice — not become a conventional dialogue scene.
AAA_REARCHITECTURE_PROPOSAL.md D-PROSE.c; FINDINGS #10) sanctions dropping intoclose scene for *one paragraph* at chosen peaks and letting *one line of actual speech* exist —
and names Ch 16 + Ch 58 as the two pilot chapters. **Ntala's origin payoff is the canonical home
for the pilot's single spoken line.** In 79 chapters of summary, Ntala says one sentence aloud,
once — and it lands like a thunderclap precisely because the voice never does it. This is not a
coincidence to be managed; it is the highest-leverage version of the fix. Spend the pilot's line
here.
phenotype and naming are already canon in §3.2). Research is authenticity-of-motive, not
high-care cultural depiction.
record becomes, in hindsight, Ntala's answer (direction C). Ntala's decision-entry voice (Ch 56)
and the Ch-58 last-solo-entry are downstream beneficiaries.
diction firewall): Ntala's payoff must use a diction unshared with (a) the lost Child
Familiar's "presence at the edge of hearing" (Ch 57/58) and (b) the Grand Sage's "familiar shape."
Ntala is a *named human person*; keep their language in the concrete-human register so no reader
cross-parses the origin payoff against either presence-thread.
before the ruling). Whether "Ntala" surfaces in-arc, and when, is a live wiring fork (§5).
---
Fable 5 needs these five ruled (or delegated) before the brief in §7 is fully load-bearing. Only #1
and #3 are truly cardinal; #2/#4/#5 are strong-rec-with-fallback.
Fork 1 — PAY or UNSEED (cardinal; canon beat).
(b) UNSEED — soften the Ch-3 "watching that will not resolve for ten chapters" so no payoff is
promised.
on-ramp to the thesis (§1); the Ch-3 line reads as a promise a distinguished arc should keep, and
the fix is one scene. Fallback if Josh wants minimum surface: pay a *quiet* version at Ch 16 only,
no Ch 38 echo.
Fork 2 — the landing node (strong rec; spine beat).
"they point to each other" beat)**, Ch 23 (departure chapter — but fires only on negative
integrity; unsafe as sole home), Ch 38 (journal handoff — most weighted but crowded midpoint).
paths, §4.4), is already Ntala's peak, is a P5 pilot chapter (§4.5), and thematically *is* the
question of two minds pointing at each other. The Ch 38 echo (at the journal handoff) lets the
answer resonate at the midpoint without carrying the whole weight.
Fork 3 — confirm the §7.4 decoupling firewall (cardinal; canon guardrail).
recognized (§4.1). This is my strong reading of §7.4 + §7.6 + §8.10, but it hard-constrains what
Fable 5 may write, so it wants Josh's explicit yes.
payoff answers Ntala's question, not Mama Klara's. (If Josh instead *wants* the maternal
recognition eventually stated, that is a separate, much larger §17.9 decision and this brief does
not cover it — flag and stop.)
Fork 4 — the name surfacing + spine retro-naming (wiring; strong rec).
§3.5) and retro-name the spine from "the healer's child" → "Ntala"; (b) keep them unnamed in-arc
and let the namelessness mean something (FINDINGS #4c) — but this now fights the 2026-07-12 ruling
that *gave* them a name.
The origin scene can turn the name into a small gift-beat (Ntala gives their name, or the
protagonist finally records it) — spending, cleanly, the "kept name" idea the review wanted.
Fork 5 — spend the P5 pilot's single spoken line here (strong rec; composes with P5).
Ch-16 one (vs. saving Ch 16's line for the decode beat).
leverage sentence available in the arc; the decode beat can keep its canonical reported line ("You
read the weight beneath the marks...") in summary voice around it.

OPUS-CAN-SPEC-NOW (lockable this session; nothing here invents Josh-owned canon):
that Ntala's payoff never resolves Mama Klara's recognition. (Pending Fork-3 confirm.)

scene-break as the payoff's form.
origin.
NEEDS-JOSH-RULING: the five forks in §5 (PAY/UNSEED; landing node; §7.4 decouple confirm; name
surfacing + spine retro-name; P5 line-spend).
FABLE-5-HANDOFF (downstream; the brief in §7): the actual origin authoring — research into
authentic healer-lineage/witness-vocation motive, selection among the §3 directions, the one payoff
scene + the Ch 3–12 retro-thread, the single spoken line, final prose and journal-voice tuning,
against the reveal re-verify.
---
Hand this section to Fable 5 after Josh rules §5. It is written to be self-contained.
**Why did Ntala — Mama Klara's child — attach themself to the protagonist as a nine-year-old, watch
them in silence across Ch 3–12, follow them across the world, and keep the record of their life for a
lifetime? Author the payoff to that question as one scene and one spoken sentence**, plus a
light retro-thread through the existing Ch 3–12 silent-observation notes so the payoff reads as
harvested, not announced.
You are not authoring: what Mama Klara recognized (that is permanently sealed — see 7.4); the
protagonist's true nature; anything about the Grand Sage.
Pick one, or compose, from §3 A–F. **Default recommendation: B (kindred outsider) + C (witness
vocation) inside the F structure (the maternal question becomes a life), with A (the charge) as an
optional grace-note.** You may deviate with reasoning. Whatever you choose must satisfy 7.4.
Do the research Josh invited: real Manggarai and Indian-Ocean-corridor **healer-lineage inheritance,
child-of-healer custom, and witness/record-keeping traditions, and the psychology of a life spent
witnessing another** — enough to ground Ntala's motive as a specific, culturally-authentic human
reason, not a trope. Standard care tier; ground it, don't over-weight it. Ntala's phenotype, name
meaning ("star"), and voice are already fixed in T3_Core §3.2 — build motive on top of them.
exists on every path, including runs where Ntala later departs); already Ntala's peak; a sanctioned
P5 scene-time pilot chapter. This is where the single spoken line lives.
hands over the journal; do not re-explain it.
never-explaining touches to the existing unsigned-note pattern so that, *in hindsight after Ch 16*,
the watching reads as the thing Ntala later names. Impression only, no forward valence.
1. Never resolve what Mama Klara recognized. §7.4 is a permanent restraint. Ntala's answer is
*Ntala's own*; they may never have learned, and never state, what their mother saw. Use the
F-structure: Ntala says why they *stopped needing* the maternal answer, not the answer. The
maternal recognition stays a felt weight forever.
2. Never leak toward the Grand Sage / thesis (§17.9, §8.10). No Grand Sage identity, no waterfall
hint, no framing that only makes sense after Ch 76–77, no other character glossing the
protagonist's nature. Ntala perceives the protagonist as *uncanny and kindred* — a person — never
as elven-royal and never as collective-consciousness.
3. Keep Ntala's register human and concrete (§3.2 / §7.4 withholding aesthetic). No exposition,
no feelings-monologue. Pay the mystery with one specific, observed thing from the road. Ntala
names a *person*, never a category.
4. Diction firewall (FINDINGS #1). Ntala's language must not share phrasing with the lost Child
Familiar's "presence at the edge of her hearing" (Ch 57/58) or the Grand Sage's "familiar shape."
Keep it in the concrete-human register so no reader cross-parses it against either presence-thread.
5. Summary voice + one break only (§4.5). Sit inside the arc's habitual-present summary voice;
the *only* departure is the single sanctioned scene-time paragraph carrying Ntala's one spoken
line. Do not turn the chapter into a dialogue scene.
6. Non-gating; no numerical-canon surface. Change no cardinal counts, no mechanics; this is
character prose. Ntala stays a non-gating companion.
and stayed** — and it is *not* "because their mother recognized X."

summary voice.
(impression-only, no early resolution).
without adding a mechanic.
stop and flag [DECISION NEEDED - JOSH] rather than crossing it.
1. A short direction memo (which of §3 A–F you chose and why; your research citations).
2. The Ch 16 payoff scene (summary voice + the one spoken line), plus the Ch 38 echo line.
3. The Ch 3–12 retro-thread touches (3–5 one-liners, placed).
4. If Fork-4 = surface the name: the Ch 13 name-surfacing micro-beat and a note for the spine
retro-name pass.
5. Run against the reveal re-verify (MEMORY: parallel prose fan-out needs adversarial verify) —
confirm no deposit/line drifts into the presence-thread or who-frame register.
---
The game's one spoken sentence. In ~30M words and 79 nodes of solemn summary voice, Ntala says a
single line aloud — once — to answer why they chose, at nine, to witness your whole life. It is
engineered to be the most-quoted moment in the game precisely because the voice never breaks
anywhere else, and it pays a mystery the player has carried since Ch 3 and Ntala has carried since
before they could write. And it does something no cosmic reveal can: it answers *who saw you* before
the waterfall ever answers *what you are* — so that when Ch 77 says "God is you," it lands as the
completion of a warmth a real person already gave you, thirteen chapters and a lifetime earlier. The
human mystery is the on-ramp to the thesis; one sentence buys the whole descent.
