Systems design proposal, AAA re-architecture track, DRAFT. This is the whole-system design for the creature/companion layer: the moment-to-moment loop, the progression, the persona-and-relationship composition, the husbandry economy, the collection/dex, the glitch-rare easter-egg, and how all of it feeds combat and the Personal-Dimension base. It ENHANCES canon already written at T3_Familiars_Named [ACTIVE v1.0], T3_Creatures_Tameable [ACTIVE v1.0], ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM.md, RUNTIME_GENERATIVE_LAYER, and CVD §17.12/§17.13. It invents no locked canon: chapter, numerical, naming, hard-line, and §17 calls stay Josh's and are flagged for his ruling. Every mechanism traces to an existing anchor, cited inline.
Read-order this rests on: T3_Familiars_Named §1 (the 22-slot framework, the six-stat garden, the integrity-band behavior, breeding §1.7); T3_Creatures_Tameable §1-2 (the 400-plus roster, the four tameable states, the Chao two-tier garden, the rare-variant framework); ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM.md §2.4.3 (the animal persona extension) and §3 (the relationship/opportunity engine, the non-gating invariant); CVD §17.12 (creature numerology + the ratified new-systems reconciliation) and §17.13 (the RNG sigma hard line); the AAA brief's Layer model and the defanged-bestiary finding.

1. Vision
The creature layer is not a collection minigame bolted onto an RPG. It is the game's second protagonist: a living, culturally-real, integrity-reading population of animals — ordinary, sacred, mythological, and the few that should not exist at all — that remembers who the player has been across seventy-seven chapters and five thousand years. The player tames it, bonds with it, raises it in a Chao-garden husbandry loop with genuine depth, breeds ordinary lines for the cozy-completionist joy of it, and fills a bestiary that is a relationship rather than a checklist. Under all of it runs one novel, premium hook the rest of the market does not have: the animals read your soul, and one kind of creature is a wound the world's catastrophe left behind — and it is the one everyone will hunt.
The design goal is to convert three things the canon already promises but has not yet made moment-to-moment addictive:
The defanged-bestiary fix (AAA brief finding #2): mythological creatures are "real fauna" the player *engages*, not read-and-passed flavor. The creature loop is the engagement engine that keeps the bestiary alive from Ch 2 to Ch 77.
The persona-and-relationship mandate (ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM.md): every creature has a life, a personality, an ecology, and — for the ones you bond — a relationship your integrity and choices reshape. The creature layer is where that mandate is most viscerally felt, because an animal reacting to your moral signature is more legible than a faction ledger.
The fun mandate (Layer-model-v2): taming AND breeding for everyone at Layer 1; the Reddit-and-streaming-worthy raising, taming, and hunting at Layer 2. The husbandry loop and the glitch-rare chase are the streamable, folklore-generating core.
This proposal keeps the load-bearing firewall absolute and untouched, and spends its invention budget on the loop, the economy, the persona composition, and the one genuinely new idea — the clean glitch-rare.

2. The design and the loop
2.1 The population — three strata the player relates to differently
The world's animals sort into three strata, all already anchored in canon. The strata are the spine of the whole system; every mechanic below routes to one of them.
The 22 named familiars (T3_Familiars_Named). The legendary bond partners — 21 mortal + the path-variable Child Familiar. Three simultaneous combat slots (one Ground, one Flying, one Water) plus the 22nd outside rotation. Deep 12-tier Hermetic bond arcs, species-canonical evolutions, culturally-sacred. These are companions, not tools — the emotional and combat apex of the layer.
The 400-plus ordinary tameable roster (T3_Creatures_Tameable, ~420 total bestiary entries). Per-region real fauna in four states — TAME / OBSERVE / DANGEROUS / CRYPTID. Bond-lite Chao-garden passive companions, the husbandry breeding stock, the mount and working-animal pool, the trophic economy. This is the everyone-plays cozy and systems layer.
The substrate-echoes — the glitch-rares (proposed new phenomenon-class, §2.7). A tiny, eerie population that is not fauna at all: creatures the vril depletion half-erased. Not tameable, not breedable, not a slot, not a legendary — a documentation-and-lore phenomenon. The completionist chase and the folklore engine. NEW; flagged for Josh (§5).
2.2 The core loop, verb by verb
The moment-to-moment loop is a nested set of sessions at three time-scales, so a player who has ten minutes and a player who has ten hours both find a satisfying stopping point.
ENCOUNTER (seconds-to-minutes). You move through a region's real food web (T3_Creatures_Tameable §1.6). Vril Sight paints who is out there and what integrity-band they read you at (§2.3). A creature is in one of four states — you observe it, approach it to tame, avoid or fight the dangerous, or trace a cryptid. Encounter is the top of every funnel.
TAME / OBSERVE (minutes). TAME-status species accept a bond-lite Chao companion bond via species-appropriate approach (never human-projected — the softshell's stillness protocol, the tiger's track-without-detection, the octopus's puzzle-play, per the familiar bond-quest grammar generalized to the roster). OBSERVE-status species (high care/ecology register) fill their bestiary entry through the seven-observation completionist chain instead. This is the collection verb.
BOND & RAISE (a session). In the trade-compound gardens and the Crown Dimension Pocket menagerie, you feed, pet, play, and train your companions and familiars. Training is the six-stat minigame layer (§2.4). Bonding is the relationship verb; the creature's persona and disposition deepen (§2.6).
BREED (a session, cozy meta). The L1 husbandry loop on the TAME roster: pair, incubate, hatch an ordinary-tier offspring, chase trait-halos and prestige-line names under sigma-bounded generational gains (§2.5). This is the long-tail, base-anchored, streamable cozy loop.
DEPLOY (per encounter). Familiars fight in their three slots by integrity-band rules; the ordinary menagerie feeds combat indirectly and firewall-safe — mounts, working animals, passive buffs, husbandry throughput into familiar training, and base-siege support (§2.8).
COMPLETE (the long game). The bestiary, the variant hunt, the glitch-rare chase, the husbandry-mastery ladder, and the tournament circuits are the Layer-2 completionist tributaries, several of them named conditions on the 100%/prestige path (§2.9).
The addictive shape is the interlock: taming feeds the garden, the garden feeds breeding and training, training feeds your familiars' combat power, combat and travel surface new encounters, and the whole thing is read through an integrity lens that makes every session personal. No verb is a dead end; each spills into the next.
2.3 Integrity as the universal creature lens
The single mechanic that makes this layer feel unlike any competitor's is already canon and just needs to be made pervasive and legible: conscious creatures read the protagonist's integrity signature directly, as a real vril-signature property, not as reputation bookkeeping (T1_IPW §8.9; ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM §2.2). This proposal makes it the spine of the creature loop:
Encounter modulation. Integrity band sets flight distance, approachability, and aggression (integrity_visible_aesthetic_shift, §8.9). A Truly-Good protagonist walks a calmer world where animals approach; a Pure-Evil one moves through a flinching, withdrawing, or predatory one. This is felt every second of traversal, not read in a menu.
Bond behavior. The familiar combat rules are integrity-gated (T3_Familiars_Named §1.4): L1/L2 familiars will only defend at ≤50% health and cannot be weaponized; L4/L5 can attack from the opening and, if deeply bonded, still die protecting you. The design tension — "the familiar is a companion, not a tool" — is the ethical heart of the layer and must be preserved verbatim.
Visible corrosion, reversible. Coats darken, vocalizations shift, predator-behavior intensifies on dark paths; radiant light-aspected forms on good paths; balanced on Drifting — and it recedes if you climb back (§1.4). The creature is a mirror the player wears in public.
The Ch 58 reckoning. The Child Familiar's reunion reads the full 77-chapter integrity history, including recovery from deep corrosion and including whether you ever abandoned a familiar (§1.2, §1.8). The creature layer has a memory with teeth.
Design note (compose, don't re-tune): the numeric bands, thresholds, and the exact aesthetic-shift curves are canon at T1_IPW §8.9 and are not re-specified here.
2.4 The Chao-garden training layer — the six-stat minigames
Training is where the Sonic-Chao-garden DNA and the Pokémon completeness meet, and it is the natural home of the ratified MG_ (Minigame/Contest) registry (CVD §17.12 new-systems reconciliation). Canon fixes the six-stat scale (T3_Familiars_Named §1.7): Strength; a slot-dependent locomotion stat (Flight / Swim / Speed); Perception (vril-sight contribution); Endurance (operational duration); Bond (relationship depth); and a per-creature Specialty. This proposal specifies the training *minigames* that move those stats and populate MG_:
One diegetic minigame per stat, themed to the trade compound that hosts it, so training is embedded in the world rather than an abstract slider: Strength at the Blacksmithing/labor compound (a haul/drag rhythm game), Locomotion at region-appropriate courses (Chao-race lineage — flight gates, current-swim, sprint tracks), Perception at the Herbalism/scholar compound (a vril-sight hidden-object / signature-reading game), Endurance as an idle-with-active-bonus stamina circuit, Bond through the pet/feed/play interactions, and Specialty via a per-creature bespoke challenge. Each is a real MG_ row with a top-score condition — feeding the Layer-2 "top score on every minigame" completion condition (CVD §17.12).
Offline/passive multipliers at Tier-C/base scope (T3_Familiars_Named §1.7; T3_Creatures_Tameable §1.4) — a garden populated over years compounds value, the classic Chao dopamine.
Sigma-bounded gains. Per-session and generational stat gains ride the RNG sigma discipline (§17.13): no grind-to-nothing streaks, no jackpot outliers, guaranteed progress inside the band. This is the built-in anti-power-creep that lets the loop be deep without breaking balance.
The throughput that matters: the training layer is how the cozy husbandry stock and the Chao companions convert into *your legendaries' combat readiness* — the Familiar Kindergarten trains the 22 named familiars on the same six-stat scale, so time spent in the garden is never orthogonal to the main game. This is the bridge that answers "how does the collection feed combat" on every integrity path (§2.8).
2.5 Breeding — the L1 husbandry loop, deepened but firewalled
Breeding is an everyone-plays single-player husbandry system on the TAME-status ordinary roster (T3_Familiars_Named §1.7; T3_Creatures_Tameable §1.4). The firewall is absolute and stated three times in canon; this proposal restates it as the design's first constraint (§4) and spends its energy on making the *ordinary* loop genuinely addictive within the cap:
Trait-halos and prestige-lines. A bonded creature (even a bonded legendary as sire/dam) can produce an ordinary-tier offspring carrying a flavor lineage-name and a minor trait-halo — a cosmetic-plus-marginal-stat inheritance, never a tier change (§1.7). The depth is in the *combinatorics of halos and cosmetics*, not in power: coat and variant-morph inheritance, specialty-stat lean, temperament inheritance (which feeds the persona/disposition layer, §2.6), and multi-generation lineage names players show off. This is the "Reddit-and-streaming-worthy creature taming" the Layer-2 mandate names.
Sigma-bounded generational gains (§17.13) are the anti-power-creep floor and ceiling: a line improves reliably but converges, so there is a satisfying "perfect line" endpoint to chase rather than an infinite exploit.
Two husbandry venues (T3_Familiars_Named §1.7): basic pens in early trade compounds; advanced husbandry in the Tier-6 Crown Dimension Pocket — a base-progression gate that ties the loop to the base economy (§2.8) and to the mastery climb.
Living-ecology stakes. Abandonment and total neglect carry consequences up to a compound-level extinction event tracked in worldstate (T3_Creatures_Tameable §1.4). The cozy loop has real stakes, which is what keeps it from feeling weightless.
Numerical husbandry parameters are pending authorial assignment (canon) — the inheritance rates, halo tables, and gestation timings are Fable-5 tuning against these design rails, not set here.
Tier-C MMO husbandry (tournaments, cross-lineage and cross-realm breeding events) is the superset above this loop and stays owned by T1_Tier_C_MMO_Spec.
2.6 The persona and relationship composition — creatures as living entities
Every creature is a persona (ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM §2.4.3, the animal/creature extension), and the bonded ones carry a relationship ledger. This proposal wires the persona layer into the moment-to-moment loop concretely:
The persona depth tier follows significance (the five-gate relevance filter): the 22 familiars and the legendary/sacred species get flagship bibles; chapter-anchored notable fauna get supporting bibles; the ambient roster shares pooled persona buckets (RUNTIME_GENERATIVE_LAYER §A.1). A crowd of tilapia does not each get a life; Khan does.
The runtime layer animates it. The on-device strategy-token loop reads a frozen per-creature context pack and emits barks, disposition shifts, ambient moods, and behavior flavor, guardrail-validated with an authored fallback (RUNTIME_GENERATIVE_LAYER §2, §D). This is what makes a tamed animal *feel* like it has an inner life across a playthrough, and what makes two players' menageries diverge.
The relationship ledger for bonded creatures (relationship_history WS_008, familiar_bond_state WS_012) evolves from integrity, decisions, and the mark you left on the creature's community — opening and closing *opportunities* (a creature that offers a bond at high integrity, a rare-variant that reveals itself to a luminous signature) but never gating progression (the non-gating invariant, ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM §3.4). A withdrawn bond re-routes to an equivalent, it never dead-ends the run.
Temperament inheritance closes a loop: bred temperament traits (§2.5) seed the offspring's persona disposition prior, so the husbandry loop literally shapes the personalities in your garden — a small, delightful, emergent depth.
2.7 The clean glitch-rare — the substrate-echo (the novel hook)
This is the one genuinely new idea, and the one Josh named directly: an intentional, cleanly-authored rare-encounter easter-egg that evokes the MissingNo glitch-rare vibe without being a bug and without breaking canon. The design:
What it is, diegetically. A substrate-echo — a creature the vril depletion did not finish erasing. The catastrophe that drained the world's vril (Thread 4 Catastrophe Memory; Shell's pre-depletion frequency, §W1) left gaps in the substrate; where a gap holds the unerased shape of a thing that used to be, an echo flickers into a deadzone. It reads mathematical and physical, never race-mystical (the vril-register firewall) — a remainder in the world's arithmetic, not a ghost. In a game whose entire thesis is "the metaphysical is operationally real and no player can opt out," a creature that is a *hole in reality* is not a fourth-wall break — it is the thesis made flesh. It belongs here in a way it could not in Pokémon.
How it evokes MissingNo, cleanly. Corrupted appearance → an authored "unrendered" aesthetic: a creature of vril-static that flickers between half-formed shapes, silent, wrong. Obscure encounter → a discoverable-but-arcane trigger, not pure misery-RNG (see below). "It broke the game" fun → replaced by clean, safe reality-glitch *flavor* (a bestiary entry that logs as an "unlisted" slot, a briefly scrambled-then-restored codex cosmetic) with zero exploit and zero power. Folklore → in-world NPCs whisper about them; the player community hunts and streams them.
The trigger, done cleanly (no 1/8192 misery). Encounter is sigma-governed like everything else (§17.13) — the anti-streak ceiling guarantees it *will* appear for a player who does the arcane thing, capping frustration; the anti-streak floor stops it trivializing. The arcane thing is a discoverable ritual rather than blind luck: observing at a vril-null deadzone (canon vril_density = null zones exist) at a liminal time, *after* the player's bestiary is deep enough that their Vril Sight can perceive the gaps (documentation opens perception — a lovely completionist reward that literally reveals more of the world). This is the clean analogue of MissingNo's Cinnabar-coast trick: obscure, learnable, folklore-worthy, and not a bug.
What the reward is (firewall-safe). Documentation, lore, a cosmetic/prestige halo, and a thread to pull toward the Forgotten One prestige content (DIFFICULTY_SYSTEM.md; "lore is never empty — it points toward the next unlock"). It is NOT tameable, NOT breedable, NOT a familiar slot, NOT a legendary, and it grants no combat power. It sits entirely outside the 33/22 numerology as an OBSERVE-class phenomenon, so it cannot touch the firewall by construction.
SUPERSESSION NOTE (Josh, eighth and ninth sittings 2026-07-27; integration record docs/pipeline_review/HOLLOW_EXPANSION_INTEGRATION_2026-07-27.md §4.1). The final clause of the line above, "it grants no combat power," is superseded on the ABSORB branch only. Toward endgame the evil-integrity absorb path grants hollow-type abilities as the protagonist turns less elf and less herself, which is axis 5 and the mechanical expression of HL_0014. Every other clause survives unchanged: not tameable, not breedable, not a familiar slot, not a legendary, outside the 33/22 numerology. This line is the upstream source of the FU.2 reward clause at §FU.2, and both carry this note so the ban is not re-imported by the back-reference.
Reveal discipline (§17.9). Pre-Ch-76, the substrate-echo carries NO explanation — pure eerie atmosphere, show-don't-tell, exactly the register the whole game holds. What it *means* (that it is depletion residue, that it points at the Grand Sage substrate-truth) is Layer-3 and post-reveal only. The encounter must never state or imply the depletion/Grand Sage substrate before the hard-locked window. This is a reveal-discipline fork for Josh (§5).
Why it is the hook. It is rare, eerie, lore-bearing, community-folklore-generating, canon-native, mature-toned (fits R-rated), and it composes with the game's deepest themes instead of sitting beside them. It is the creature layer's signature, and it is the thing a streamer clips.
2.8 How the layer feeds combat and the Personal-Dimension base
The firewall keeps ordinary creatures out of the three sacred combat slots, so "feeds combat" must be answered without them ever becoming slot-fighters. Five firewall-safe channels, all canon-anchored:
Familiars fight; the garden fuels them. The three combat slots are legendary-only and integrity-governed (§2.3). The husbandry/Chao stock feeds combat *through* the Familiar Kindergarten six-stat training (§2.4) — the collection's throughput into your legendaries' readiness. This is the primary channel and it works on every integrity path.
Mounts and working animals — the VH_ registry. Bred and trained ordinary creatures become rideable mounts, pack animals, hunting partners, and draft animals — a real traversal-and-combat-support role with no familiar slot. This wires the creature layer directly into the ratified VH_ (Vehicle/Mount) registry (CVD §17.12) and into the max-upgrades-on-every-craft Layer-2 condition.
Passive menagerie buffs. Compound gardens grant environmental/craft buffs (T3_Creatures_Tameable §1.4) — a herbal-pollinator garden boosts herbalism crafting, and so on. The menagerie is a standing, base-anchored buff layer.
The trophic/economy loop. Hunting, herbalism pacification, and ecology feed materials for weapons and trades (T3_Creatures_Tameable §1.3, §1.6), tying the creature layer to crafting and the 72-weapon economy without any creature becoming a weapon itself.
Base-siege support at Tier-C/base scope. Raised ordinary creatures deploy in non-slot swarm/support roles for the base Domains and Crown Dimension Pocket defense/assault content — the streamable base-building payoff — kept firmly distinct from the three named slots.
The Personal-Dimension base is the creature layer's home: trade-compound Chao gardens, the Tier-6 Crown Dimension Pocket advanced husbandry and menagerie, and the base Domains buildables (a Layer-2 max-upgrade completion condition, CVD §17.12). The base is where the collection is displayed, raised, bred, and shown off — the Reddit-worthy diorama the Layer-2 mandate calls for.
2.9 Progression, prestige, and the completion tributaries
The creature layer carries several progression ladders, all mapped to the 12-tier Hermetic framework (CVD §12.1) so it never invents a parallel system:
The bond track to Magister Templi (post-Ch-77 prestige) and into Magus at Tier-C (T3_Familiars_Named §1.6) — the deep-bond mastery climb.
Husbandry mastery — the perfect-line and prestige-line ladder, sigma-capped so it has an achievable summit.
Bestiary completion — per-species, per-variant, per-chapter, per-region, and full-bestiary rewards (T3_Creatures_Tameable §3), gated behind the seven-observation chains and the variant hunt.
The variant hunt — the shiny-equivalent (~1/4,000, sigma-bounded, +5% specialty only, no combat power — a documentation reward, §2.2) with Vril-Sight-tier deliberate seeking at higher mastery (§2.3).
The substrate-echo chase — the glitch-rare folklore hunt (§2.7), proposed as a named tributary to the Forgotten One 100%/prestige path.
Tournaments and contests (MG_ registry, Tier-C) — Chao-race circuits, familiar-vs-familiar combat and skill tournaments, and husbandry contests, each a top-score completion condition.
Several of these are the ratified Layer-2 completion conditions (top score on every minigame; max upgrades on every craft including base Domains and vehicles/mounts — CVD §17.12), which means the creature layer is not optional flavor: it is load-bearing for 100% completion.

3. Alternatives considered
Three places where the design shape genuinely forked, with the reasoning for the recommended branch. (These are design-shape forks I resolved within the vision; the canon/numerical/naming/§17 forks that need Josh are in §5.)
A. The glitch-rare's diegetic nature. (1) Substrate-wound (a hole in depleted reality); (2) pre-depletion echo (a ghost of an extinct/pre-catastrophe creature, tied to Thread 4 and Shell); (3) meta/rendering glitch (literal fourth-wall MissingNo). Rejected #3 — a true fourth-wall glitch breaks the "operational reality no player can opt out of" thesis and reads as slop in a serious substrate game. Recommended: a fusion of #1 and #2 — the echo *is* a wound, and what the wound holds is the unerased shape of a pre-depletion thing. This makes it canon-native, thematically load-bearing (it composes with the vril-depletion substrate and Thread 4), and clean.
B. Husbandry depth under the power cap. (1) Shallow cosmetic-only husbandry (safe, low engagement); (2) deep trait-halo/prestige-line husbandry that feeds the Chao completionist and base economy but stays power-capped by sigma; (3) breeding-as-combat-meta (bred lines as a power lever). Rejected #3 — it collides with the firewall and with the "familiars are companions, not tools" ethos, and it would create the exact power-creep the sigma discipline exists to prevent. Recommended #2 — the depth lives in combinatorics, cosmetics, temperament/persona inheritance, and lineage prestige, with sigma as the anti-creep floor/ceiling. This is the cozy, streamable, addictive loop the Layer-2 mandate asks for, achieved without touching combat balance.
C. Does creature-collection completion feed the 100%/prestige path? (1) Keep the creature layer self-contained (its own rewards, no tie to the Forgotten One); (2) make full-bestiary + all-variant + substrate-echo documentation a named tributary to the 100%/prestige and Forgotten One content. Recommended #2 — it composes with the ratified Layer-2 completion conditions and with DIFFICULTY_SYSTEM's "lore points toward the next unlock," and it gives the completionist chase a destination. The risk (creature grind gating prestige) is neutralized by the non-gating invariant and the sigma discipline: the tributary is one of several parallel paths to 100%, never the sole one.
---
4. Canon composition and firewalls
The design is built to be firewall-first. The load-bearing invariants, restated as the design's hard constraints:
The breeding firewall (HL_0057 + HL_0058; CVD §17.12; T3_Familiars_Named §1.7; T3_Creatures_Tameable §1.4). Bred offspring are ALWAYS ordinary-tier — never legendary, never a 22-slot familiar, never a canonical evolution. The 33 legendary species (21 mortal + 12 elven), the 22 familiar slots including the path-variable 22nd, and the three species-canonical evolutions (Koi→Dragon, Sea Turtle→Cosmic Turtle, Raven→Huginn-Muninn pair) are untouched by husbandry. A bonded legendary may sire/dam only an ordinary prestige-line (flavor name + minor trait-halo). This is stated as the design's first constraint and every loop above is checked against it.
The 22 named familiars stay out of the breeding pool — they are bond partners, not stock. The husbandry loop runs only on the TAME-status ordinary roster.
The three sacred combat slots stay legendary-only — no ordinary creature ever becomes a slot-fighter; the "feeds combat" channels (§2.8) are all non-slot.
The numerology is not touched (CVD §17.12). No cardinal count changes. The substrate-echo sits OUTSIDE the 33/22 as an OBSERVE-class phenomenon; the MG_ and VH_ registries are additive live-layer structures whose existence is canonical and whose counts are authorial (already ratified 2026-07-12).
The RNG sigma hard line (§17.13) governs every random surface in the layer — variant spawns, glitch-rare triggers, husbandry gains, training gains — no "1% chance, 1000 attempts" outliers anywhere.
The Care Doctrine (§17.1) binds every creature persona: OBSERVE-status for high-care/sacred species (no taming where taming is inappropriate); accurate, respectful, primary-sourced folklore substrate with attribution (HL_0002); the Boto night-form witness-only rule (§6); the cryptid-vs-Western-cryptozoology distinction (a Ropen/Mokele-mbembe is framed authorially as a modern construct, a Taniwha as living tradition); no sacred name on a mortal creature.
Reveal discipline (§17.9). No creature — least of all the substrate-echo — leaks the Grand Sage or the vril-depletion substrate before the hard-locked Ch 76-77 window. The philosophical-foundation roles of the octopus, Kasa, Khan, etc. surface only in retrospect (as canon already specifies).
The vril-register firewall. Substrate-echoes and all vril-reading behavior read mathematical/physical, never race-mystical "polar energy" — holding the Vril-Society firewall.
Two consistency fixes surfaced while grounding this proposal (living-source cleanups, not new canon):
Stale familiar name "Bodhi." T3_Creatures_Tameable §0.1 and §1.1 still call the Sri Lankan elephant familiar "Bodhi (G2)"; T3_Familiars_Named names it Muthu (the ratified Bodhi→Muthu rename). Eight _source files still carry "Bodhi" — a hallucination risk per the living-source doctrine; flagged for a cleanup pass (§6).
Roster-count drift. T3_Creatures_Tameable is internally inconsistent on the non-familiar count ("200+" in §0.1 vs "400-plus / 420-plus" in §1.1/§2). The operative figure is 400-plus non-familiar / ~420 total bestiary; §0.1 should be reconciled.

5. Forks for Josh — options and recommendation
Genuine canon/numerical/naming/§17 decisions the design needs. Each has a recommendation, but the call is Josh's.
FORK 1 — Does the substrate-echo glitch-rare enter canon at all, and as what class? Options: (a) it does not exist (drop the novel hook); (b) it exists as an OBSERVE-class documentation phenomenon OUTSIDE the 33/22 numerology, not tameable/breedable/slot/legendary (the clean-firewall design in §2.7); (c) it exists but as a tameable oddity (rejected on my side — it endangers the firewall). Recommendation: (b). It is the layer's signature hook, it composes with the deepest canon, and by sitting outside the numerology as OBSERVE-only it cannot touch the firewall. This is a new phenomenon-class, so it is Josh's to admit.
FORK 2 — The substrate-echo's name and in-world register. Naming is Josh's. Options, all reading mathematical/substrate per the vril-register firewall and evoking MissingNo's "missing number": the Unnumbered (closest MissingNo resonance, eerie, mathematical), the Remainder (what the arithmetic left over), the Hollow / Hollows (the wound register, most atmospheric), σ-echo / the Sigma-ghost (ties to the §17.13 sigma boundary). Recommendation: "the Hollow" as the in-world common name (what people whisper), with "substrate-echo" as the design/registry class term. Flagged for Josh's naming call.
FORK 3 — Reveal-tie of the substrate-echo (§17.9). Options: (a) pure atmosphere pre-Ch-76, zero explanation, its meaning strictly Layer-3/post-reveal (the safe design in §2.7); (b) it carries breadcrumb lore that partially explains the depletion earlier. Recommendation: (a). Option (b) risks leaking the Grand Sage/depletion substrate before the hard lock. Keep it pure eerie atmosphere until the reveal window; let its meaning land only in retrospect, exactly as the octopus/Kasa/Khan foundations do.
FORK 4 — Does creature-completion become a named tributary to the Forgotten One / 100% prestige path? Options: (a) self-contained creature rewards only; (b) full-bestiary + all-variant + substrate-echo documentation is a named 100%/prestige tributary (§2.9, §3-C). Recommendation: (b) — composes with the ratified Layer-2 completion conditions and DIFFICULTY_SYSTEM, with the non-gating invariant ensuring it is never the sole path. Touches the prestige/completion canon, so Josh's call.
FORK 5 — Do the MG_ (minigame/contest) and VH_ (vehicle/mount) registries formally adopt the creature-layer rows proposed here (the six per-stat training minigames, the tournament/contest circuits, the creature-mount class)? The registries' existence is ratified canon; their row counts and columns are explicitly authorial (CVD §17.12). Recommendation: adopt the *classes* proposed (training-minigame, contest, creature-mount) as the creature layer's slice of MG_/VH_, with counts and columns left to authorial assignment. A light confirmation, but it is registry-shape and worth Josh's nod.

6. Opus-now vs Fable-5 split
Opus can spec and wire now (this session or next)
Lock the core-loop verb model (§2.2) and the three-strata population model (§2.1) as the creature-layer design of record.
Lock the integrity-lens spine (§2.3) as compose-only over T1_IPW §8.9 — no re-tuning, just the pervasiveness-and-legibility design.
Specify the six per-stat training minigames (§2.4) as MG_ registry classes (design rows: one per stat + the tournament/contest circuits), pending count/column authorial assignment.
Specify the husbandry loop's *design rails* (§2.5) — trait-halo/prestige-line/temperament-inheritance/cosmetic combinatorics, the two venues, the living-ecology stakes — with numerical parameters left pending.
Wire the creature persona composition (§2.6) into the ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM animal extension and the runtime binding — anchor rows and persona tiers, no new persona content authored.
Specify the five firewall-safe combat-feed channels and the VH_ creature-mount class (§2.8), and the base/Crown-Dimension-Pocket integration.
Specify the completion tributary structure (§2.9) as compose-over the ratified Layer-2 conditions.
Apply the two living-source consistency fixes (§4): the Bodhi→Muthu cleanup across _source, and the T3_Creatures_Tameable roster-count reconciliation. (Grounded corrections, not new canon.)
Draft the substrate-echo design fully (§2.7) as a proposal ready for Josh's FORK-1/2/3 rulings — nothing wired into canon until he admits the class.
Fable-5 handoff (deep implementation, final prose, tuning — downstream)
Tune all numerical husbandry parameters (inheritance rates, halo tables, gestation timings, generational sigma bands) against the §2.5 rails — canon marks these "pending authorial assignment."
Tune the variant and substrate-echo occurrence parameters within the §17.13 sigma discipline (rates, floors, ceilings, pity curves) and populate T0_Drop_Table.
Author the per-region ordinary-roster bestiary entries (400-plus) at framework depth against primary-source ethological/folklore corpora — the T8 Region Page Section 3 authoring, per chapter, as the cascade reaches it.
Author the supporting/ambient creature personas and the pooled buckets at build time (deep-research + normalize-doc critic gate), per the ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM build plan.
Author the substrate-echo's final encounter prose, aesthetic, and NPC-folklore lines once Josh rules FORK 1-3 — held to the §17.9 reveal discipline and §17.1 care register.
Build and balance the six training minigames, the tournament circuits, and the creature-mount handling as playable MG_/VH_ content.
Author the per-chapter creature relationship-and-opportunity beats against the non-gating invariant, coupled to the spine cascade.

7. The AAA hook
The animals are the world's witnesses — they read who you have become, they remember you across five thousand years, and one kind of them is a wound the catastrophe left behind that everyone will hunt. A living, culturally-real bestiary the player tames, bonds, raises in a deep Chao-garden husbandry loop, and completes as a relationship rather than a checklist — read every second through an integrity lens that makes the world flinch or open to you — crowned by the clean glitch-rare, the Hollow: a substrate-echo that is the game's own thesis made flesh, eerie, folklore-generating, streamable, and canon-native, done as clean design instead of a bug.
SUPERSESSION NOTE (Josh, eighth and ninth sittings 2026-07-27; integration record §4.1). "Substrate-echo" is RETIRED as the class term under the H-2 naming ruling. The class term is "the Hollow," authorial and registry only, and the player-facing vocabulary attaches to the RIFT, which is the door, never to the occupant. The glitch-rare and MissingNo register above now describes the WHISPER tier only. The class is a two-tier content pillar: a whisper tier that is rare, uncounted, unannounced and folkloric, and a CONTENT tier carrying realm-traversal cleansing, rift dungeons, affliction cleansing, the evil-path absorb lane, the event layer, and the world's cleansing meter. Both tiers are FOUGHT, and Hollows are DEFEATED.

8. Return payload
Doc: docs/proposals/systems/creature-system.md
The whole-system design: three-strata population (22 familiars / 400-plus ordinary / substrate-echoes); a verb-by-verb core loop at three time-scales (encounter → tame/observe → bond/raise → breed → deploy → complete); the integrity-lens spine; the six-stat Chao-garden training minigames (MG_); the deepened-but-firewalled husbandry loop; the persona/relationship composition; the clean glitch-rare (the Hollow / substrate-echo); the five firewall-safe combat-feed channels + VH_ mounts + the Personal-Dimension base; and the completion tributaries.
The novel hook: the Hollow — an intentional, canon-native, reveal-safe MissingNo-class glitch-rare that is the vril-depletion substrate made flesh.
SUPERSESSION NOTE on the two payload lines above (Josh, eighth and ninth sittings 2026-07-27; integration record §4.1). Read "substrate-echoes" and "the Hollow / substrate-echo" as THE HOLLOW: the term substrate-echo is retired by the H-2 naming ruling. The MissingNo-class glitch-rare framing remains accurate for the WHISPER tier and is inaccurate for the CONTENT tier, which is authored, density-governed, fought, and counted by the world's cleansing meter across realm traversal, rift dungeons, affliction quests and the event layer.
Firewalls held: the breeding firewall (offspring always ordinary; 33/22/3-evolutions inviolate); the 22 out of the pool; slots legendary-only; numerology untouched; sigma on every RNG surface; Care Doctrine and reveal discipline throughout.
Five forks for Josh (glitch-rare admission + class; its name; its reveal-tie; the completion tributary; MG_/VH_ adoption), each with a recommendation.
The Opus-now / Fable-5 split, and two living-source consistency fixes (Bodhi→Muthu; roster-count reconciliation).

Follow-up (2026-07-13): the Hollow refined as negative-vril blight, the CONTAIN-blight verb, and the definitive folklore/supernatural collectibility map
Josh raised two coupled points: (1) the Hollow glitch-rare should read as a negative-vril BLIGHT — the negative-vril made flesh, a mature R-rated horror-collect, not a cute pet; and (2) across the arc the player fights many folklore, supernatural, and fairy-lore monsters as bosses — which of them are collectible, and how? Are any collectible via glitch/blight-capture, RNG-rare, completionist dex, or a discovery-event easter-egg quest? This section refines the Hollow, defines a clean containment collect-verb, and lands the definitive collectibility map that sorts every supernatural being in the game to exactly one collect-relationship. It invents no locked canon; the numerology, the firewall, and every §17.1/§17.9 line stay Josh's and are flagged where a call is needed (FU.6).
Grounding read this rests on, beyond the §-refs already cited above: T1_Vril_and_Magic_System_Master §1 (the positive/negative vril polarity — negative vril as "a vibrational state that reinforces self-loss, disconnection, and consciousness-hardening," with Cassius = Latin cassus, hollow/empty carrying its etymological signature); the False Naga canon (T3_Supporting_Characters §; T1_Threads_22 Thread 2/6 Ch 6 — negative-consciousness occupying a genuine being's vacated space, "must be identified and genuine restored"); the worked folklore-boss handling at docs/spine/CH_26.md (the Rusalka honored-not-targeted, the Koschei-casket a construct-never-a-living-being, the strigoi pacify-by-purge); and docs/proposals/modern_arc_staging/modern_scope_59_65.md (the living-sacred beings — Nightmarchers, aku-aku, taniwha — FREED by community and protagonist, never appropriated, while the antagonist forces neutral/malevolent guardians only).
FU.1 The refinement — the Hollow is the negative-vril made flesh
The §2.7 draft framed the Hollow as a substrate-echo: a wound in depleted reality holding the unerased shape of a pre-depletion thing. Josh's steer sharpens the valence from elegiac to malignant, and it makes the hook MORE canon-native rather than less, because negative vril is already the fully-defined antagonist substrate of the whole game. The refinement fuses the wound and the substrate cleanly:
What it is, refined. The Hollow is negative vril congealed into flesh. Where negative vril has pooled and hardened — in a vril-null deadzone, at a Velheim extraction scar, along a corruption seam — it can occupy a vacated substrate-gap and take on a half-formed body. It wears the eroded shape of something the depletion took (the wound note: a stolen face), but what animates that shape is negative vril, not life (the blight note: self-losing, disconnected, consciousness-hardening flesh). It is the antagonist substrate made visible as a thing, not a ghost of a lost creature and not a personified demon — a remainder in the world's arithmetic that the family's five-thousand-year accumulation left able to stand up. The etymology closes the loop: the family's founder is Cassius, cassus, hollow; the wild blight that his substrate throws off is the Hollow. The name was always pointing here.
Why it is canon-native, not a new metaphysics. This is the wild, ambient cousin of the False Naga (Ch 6): the same mechanic — negative-consciousness occupying a being's vacated space and rising as a false substitute that must be identified and the genuine restored — but spontaneous and environmental rather than a targeted vessel-substitution. The False Naga is the authored, chapter-boss instance of the pattern; the Hollow is the same pattern loose in the world's deadzones. Anchoring the Hollow to an existing canon boss pattern removes the last "is this a fourth-wall glitch" risk: it is not a rendering bug and not an alien class — it is the game's own corruption substrate doing at ambient scale what the player already watches it do to the naga at Ch 6.
Mature, R-rated horror, not a pet. The Hollow is body-horror: unrendered flickering flesh, wrong anatomy, silence, vril-static. Approaching one exerts a light hardening-pull — the negative-vril register the game names (self-loss, disconnection) leans on the player's signature for the duration, a felt integrity-pressure moment, never a mechanical debuff you cannot leave. You never keep a Hollow alive, never bond it, never garden it. The horror is precisely that it looks like a lost thing and is filled with the wrong substrate.
Reveal, refined (updates FORK 3). Because negative-vril corruption is on stage from Ch 6 onward (the False Naga, the strigoi-as-vril-parasite at Ch 26, the negative-consciousness manifestations), the Hollow's SURFACE reading — a negative-vril blight, a corruption-organism — is reveal-SAFE and can be legible from its first appearance. What stays Layer-3 and post-Ch-76 is the deeper meaning: that the shape it wears is what the depletion erased, and that the depletion and the substrate point ultimately at the Grand Sage truth. So the Hollow is now safER than the old framing, which leaned its whole meaning on the reveal-locked depletion-substrate. Surface: corruption made flesh (say it). Depth: a wound wearing a lost face, pointing at the pre-depletion truth (never say it pre-reveal).
SURVIVES, RE-VERIFIED (integration record §4.1 and §7). The surface-legible and depth-post-Ch-76 split above stands, and it is now re-verified against the FIVE-gate reveal ladder: gate 0 surface legible from first appearance, said diegetically in each region's own register; gate 1 the Velheim extraction-scar locus does not exist before Ch 39, so every pre-39 Hollow stands at a natural deadzone; gate 2 the depth lands at Ch 76-77; gate 3 the procedural spawn table is chapter-scoped by construction; gate 4 the substrate read returns ground and never a signature, a hand, a mark, or a negation of one, before Ch 39; gate 5 the absorb-path power names are held descriptive until the Ch 76-77 re-titling. It is also re-verified against the THREE-rung perception ladder: rung 1 the Neophyte vril-trace from Ch 2, rung 2 Vril Sight at Tier 2 Zelator from Ch 15, rung 3 substrate perception at Tier 6 Adeptus Minor. The class does NOT floor at Ch 15; the whisper tier and the sensing half of the affliction lane run from Ch 2.
FU.2 CONTAIN-blight — the clean collect-verb
A Hollow is not captured, tamed, or befriended — it has no will to win over; it is a blight. Its collect-verb is containment-and-purification, a hazmat/exorcism grammar, not a pokeball grammar:
SURVIVES, RELOCATED (Josh, ninth sitting 2026-07-27, JB-1; integration record §3.1, §3.2 and §4.1). The opening above stands, with the relocation stated: CONTAIN is the ENDING, not the encounter. Stabilize, seal and record are phase FOUR of a four-phase fought encounter — perceive the locus, pressure it under a real fight, break the body, then resolve the fork. Josh removed the Hollow class from HL_0080's non-damage protocol in full, so Hollows are DEFEATED. His encounter-design mandate rides with it, as seeds and never an exhaustive list: puzzle-forward encounters still carry real combat, action-forward encounters carry a per-encounter trick such as a damage window, a combo or parry requirement, or environmental-damage-only, and the palette is open. The full loop is find the cause, enter the rift, and clear both the hollow contamination and the Hollow itself.
The act. The player STABILIZES the negative-vril charge, SEALS the substrate-gap it occupies, and LIFTS a containment-record — a documented, neutralized specimen — into a sealed sub-codex of the Beastiary (an "unlisted" slot, per the §2.7 cosmetic). The verb is CONTAIN; the collectible is the record, never a living entry.
The moral fork, path-coupled (this is the R-rated conscience the collect carries). Containment resolves two ways along the integrity axis, composing with the §2.3 integrity spine and the §9.2 bands: on the good register the player PURIFIES — the blight is unmade, the gap sealed, and a measure of positive substrate returns to the deadzone (a small world-healing beat, a mercy for the stolen shape); on the evil register the player HARVESTS — draining the negative charge into their own signature, a hardening act that carries an integrity cost. Both outcomes log the same record; the fork is purify-versus-harvest, never a power gate, and never a dead end (the non-gating invariant, ENTITY_PERSONA_SYSTEM §3.4). This is collection with a cost of conscience — the mature tone the R-rating asks for.
SUPERSESSION NOTE (Josh, eighth and ninth sittings 2026-07-27; integration record §3.1, §3.2, §3.3 and §4.1). The fork's canonical terms are now CLEANSE, meaning heal the place or the person, and ABSORB, the evil-integrity path. Purify and harvest are RETIRED SYNONYMS, recorded here for provenance and never to be read as a different mechanic. The fork is now phase FOUR of a four-phase fought encounter rather than the whole procedure, and it is mandatory and unskippable: no third option, no default, and no timer that chooses for the player. On the content tier a CLEANSE resolution writes the content completion ledger; an ABSORB resolution lifts the immediate affliction so nothing dead-ends, but leaves the gap unsealed, sets node state to ABSORBED, returns no substrate, and leaves the node re-cleansable later (director ruling D-1, confirmed by Josh's ninth-sitting no-lockout law: neither progression nor the completionist 100 percent may ever be gated by an integrity path or an absorb choice).
The reward, firewall-safe (unchanged from §2.7). Documentation, lore, a prestige/cosmetic containment-halo, and a thread toward the Forgotten One prestige content. No combat power. Not tameable, not breedable, not a familiar slot, not a legendary. It sits OUTSIDE the 33/22 as a CONTAIN/OBSERVE-class phenomenon, so it cannot touch the firewall by construction — and, critically, because it is never TAME-status, it is outside the 22nd-slot binding-stone pool (§2.4 of T3_Creatures_Tameable: the pool is TAME-status species only), so a Hollow can never be elevated to legendary. State this explicitly in the class definition.
SUPERSESSION NOTE (Josh, eighth and ninth sittings 2026-07-27; integration record §3.4 and §4.1). "No combat power" is superseded on the ABSORB branch only: toward endgame the absorb path grants hollow-type abilities as the protagonist turns less elf and less herself. The remaining clauses survive unchanged — not tameable, not breedable, not a familiar slot, not a legendary, outside the 33/22, outside the binding-stone pool. The upstream statement at §2.7 carries the same note. Two riders now bind the reward class. Rewards attach to the CONTAINER and never to the being: a rift dungeon's stat upgrade belongs to the dungeon, a pop-up's rarity-graded rewards to the chest and the site, an affliction quest's reward to the community relationship, and the Hollow's own row may never carry a drop anchor, a loot-table reference, or a win reward containing an item id, because the body was never alive and there is no corpse. And there is no kill credit: progression flows through the meter and the quest, never through a defeat counter, so a "Hollows defeated" statistic is a banned surface. The absorb lane also takes the universal minor and major pools like every other capability, never routes to the gear-imprint lane (an affix is removable by unequipping, which contradicts turning less yourself), and never grants mythic pool options.
The trigger stays as §2.7 specifies: sigma-governed (§17.13, no 1/8192 misery), a discoverable-but-arcane ritual (observing a vril-null deadzone at a liminal time once the player's bestiary is deep enough for their Vril Sight to perceive the gaps), documentation-opens-perception. The negative-vril refinement adds a second legitimate spawn locus: fresh Velheim extraction scars and corruption seams, which ties the Hollow hunt to the antagonist's operational footprint and gives it chapters-worth of diegetic placement.
SURVIVES, AND NOW CARRIES GATE 3 (integration record §4.1 and §7.2). The sigma-governed trigger and the dual spawn loci above stand. Gate 3 binds them: the procedural spawn table is CHAPTER-SCOPED, and VELHEIM_EXTRACTION_SCAR and CORRUPTION_SEAM are absent below Ch 39, so every pre-39 Hollow stands at a natural deadzone. This is the first reveal constraint in the corpus that must live in a data table rather than in prose, because no prose critic reads a spawner; until the harness assertion ships it is a review obligation, and that limit is stated rather than assumed away. The whisper tier's outer governor is an arc-wide authored LIFETIME CAP with the sigma window running INSIDE it, one window per capped slot; the content tier is governed by per-surface density budgets instead, and the cap never bounds it.
FU.3 The definitive collectibility map — every supernatural being routed by what it IS
The player fights leyak-adjacent conjured predators, the False Naga, the eighteen Sanni disease-demons, Koschei, the strigoi and rusalka, Herensuge, Guayota, fairy-realm beings, and more across the arc. Collectibility is not a property of "is it supernatural" — it is a property of the being's ONTOLOGY in canon: what the tradition itself says the being is, and whether it has a will, a sanctity, or none. Six collect-relationships cover the whole population; every being resolves to exactly one. This is the map.
Ontological class
Examples
Collect-verb
Collectible?
The 33 legendary species (21 mortal + 12 elven, incl. mythic forms Koi→Dragon, Raven→Huginn-Muninn, Simurgh)
the fairy-realm elven familiars; the mythic-evolving mortal familiars
BOND
Yes — via the canonical bonding-quest ONLY; never glitched, RNG'd, or captured
sacred/high-care real animals; apex predators; cryptid traces
DOCUMENT
Dex only — no capture
A. Living-tradition SACRED supernatural beings
aku-aku, Pele, the Nightmarchers, taniwha, moʻo, the revered Rangda, the conscious Naga, the honored Rusalka, the Ouidah sacred python

NEVER captured — witness-dex; may be freed or allied through the community relationship, never owned, never a slot
B. The tradition's OWN condemned monsters
leyak/begu-ganjang conjured predators, the eighteen Sanni disease-demons, the strigoi affliction, Herensuge, Guayota, Baba Yaga, jorogumo-class beings
FIGHT (and, where it is an affliction on a person, CONTAIN/PURGE-and-restore)
Not a companion — boss; dex-on-resolve; the person is saved, the monster is not kept
C. Neutral / ambivalent, bargainable folk-beings
a domovoi-class household spirit, a patupaiarehe, a bargainable trickster or guardian the tradition itself says can be won over
EARN (discovery easter-egg quest)
Yes — a SMALL, hand-curated set, as ordinary-tier companions, via a favor-quest that honors the tradition's own how-you-win-its-favor grammar
D. Constructs / forced vessels
the Koschei-casket ward, the False Naga substitute, a Velheim-forced guardian (a taniwha wrenched to a drowning-construct)
FIGHT + FREE
Boss; the construct is broken and the genuine being freed/restored; dex-on-resolve — never kept
E. The Hollow — negative-vril blight
the negative-vril made flesh (FU.1)
CONTAIN-blight
Yes — the mature-horror completionist collect; contained/purified into a sealed record, never a living entry, outside the 33/22
LANE-E NOTE, on the table's final row (Josh, eighth and ninth sittings 2026-07-27; integration record §2 and §4.1). Lane E now carries TWO TIERS and the fought property. The WHISPER tier is rare, unannounced, arc-capped, gates nothing, and rewards only the record and the fork. The CONTENT tier is authored and density-governed and spans realm-traversal cleansing, rift dungeons both authored and pop-up, affliction cleansing, the event layer, and the evil-path absorb lane. The predicate is a single boolean: a Hollow encounter is content-tier if and only if its resolution writes a content completion ledger, and otherwise it is whisper-tier. Both tiers are FOUGHT, since Josh removed the Hollow class from HL_0080's non-damage protocol at the ninth sitting. The world's cleansing meter counts authored non-event non-random rifts, plus easter-egg and hard-to-find rifts which are counted and never progression-gating, plus affliction cleansing; it excludes event rifts and random pop-up rifts, which reward without counting. Realm-traversal cleansing was not named in that ruling and tracks through worldstate rather than the meter.
The map answers Josh's four proposed acquisition modes cleanly:
Glitch/blight-capture is exactly lane E (CONTAIN-blight), reserved to the Hollow class — the negative-vril blight, not any living folklore being.
RNG-rare is not an ontological lane; it is an occurrence MODIFIER that rides over the classes — the variant-morph hunt on ordinary fauna (§2.2), the sigma-governed Hollow trigger (FU.2), and rare-encounter versions of folk-beings. It never changes what a being IS or whether it is collectible; it only changes how often you meet it, always under §17.13.
Completionist/dex (DOCUMENT-all) is the universal spine that covers EVERY class at once: you document the sacred, the condemned, the construct, the blight, the legendary, and the ordinary. Everything earns a Beastiary/codex entry even when nothing is captured — the sacred being you witnessed and freed, the boss you resolved, the Hollow you contained, all log. This is the real Layer-2 chase, and it is complete without a single capture beyond the tame/earn/bond/contain lanes.
LOGGING NOTE on "the Hollow you contained, all log" (integration record §4.1 and §5). That clause now SPLITS by tier. Whisper-tier resolutions log to the codex logbook, which stays the capped observation record and the folklore layer's home. Content-tier resolutions log to the world's cleansing meter and to the region and community ledgers, not to the codex, which is what lets the cap and the content density coexist without either bounding the other. Both branches of the fork log the record either way: completionism is never gated on morality, and no whisper record may appear in any gate reference, unlock condition, or completion denominator.
Discovery-event easter-egg quest is lane C (EARN) — the special quest to befriend and earn a specific ambivalent folk-being as an ordinary-tier companion. It is deliberately small and hand-authored, not a systemic capture-everything, and it is gated by care (FU.5).
FU.4 Firewall reconciliation — nothing here breaches the 33/22/offspring lines
Every lane above is checked against the load-bearing firewall (§4; CVD §17.12; HL_0057/HL_0058):
No folklore capture creates a 34th legendary or a new slot. Lane-C earned folk-companions are ORDINARY-tier — no combat slot, ordinary offspring, exactly like the 400-plus roster. Lane-E Hollows are CONTAIN/OBSERVE-class, outside the numerology, never breedable, never a slot.
The 33 legendary supernatural beings remain bonded via canonical bonding-quests ONLY. The mythologically-charged legendaries (Simurgh, the dragon-form Koi, the Huginn-Muninn Raven, the twelve elven fairy species) are the game's sanctioned "collectible supernatural companions," and they are earned through their authored bond-quests — never through a glitch, an RNG roll, or a folklore-capture. This is the clean answer to "can we ever glitch/rare a fairy being into a companion": the fairy-lore companions you keep are the twelve elven legendaries, and they come only by the bonding-quest.
Offspring always ordinary. A lane-C folk-companion breeds to ordinary-tier like any TAME creature; a bonded legendary sires only an ordinary prestige-line. Unchanged.
The binding-stone pool excludes the Hollow by construction. The 22nd-slot binding stone (T3_Creatures_Tameable §2.4) elevates a TAME-status creature at the L2/L4/L5 finale; a Hollow is never TAME-status, so it can never be the elevated creature. A lane-C ordinary folk-companion, if rowed TAME, could flavorfully be the binding-stone pick on those finales — which is firewall-safe (it becomes the ordinary path-variable slot occupant, not a 34th canonical legendary).
FU.5 Care and reveal — the map is a §17.1 instrument, not just a mechanic
The sort itself enforces the Care Doctrine, which is the point of routing by ontology:
The sacred set is structurally uncapturable. Lane A exists so that the aku-aku, Pele, the Nightmarchers, taniwha, moʻo, the revered Rangda, the conscious Naga, and every living-tradition sacred being are NEVER in a capture lane by design — they route to DOCUMENT/FREE/ALLY, honored on their own terms, freed by the community and protagonist where the antagonist has forced them, never owned. This generalizes the Boto night-form witness-only rule and the modern_scope_59_65 "freed, never appropriated" ruling to a whole-population invariant.
The condemned set is fought as the tradition frames it, never collected as a trophy. Lane B renders the strigoi as the tradition's own documented folk-belief (the Medveđa record), not Hollywood horror; the Sanni demons as the Sinhala tovil healing-tradition's own named afflictions; and it keeps the cryptid-authenticity distinction (a Ropen/Mokele-mbembe framed authorially as a modern Western construct; a taniwha as living tradition). You never keep a culture's condemned evil as a pet — that would be both a care failure and tonal slop.
The EARN lane is care-gated and curated. Lane C is a small hand-authored set, and each quest is vetted: never a being any living community holds sacred (that is lane A) and never a being the tradition condemns as evil (that is lane B) — only genuinely ambivalent, bargainable folk-beings whose own tradition says favor can be won. Its roster and count are a fork for Josh (FU.6).
Reveal discipline holds. The Hollow's surface (negative-vril blight) is legible; its depth (the erased shape, the substrate-truth, the Grand Sage) is Layer-3/post-Ch-76 (FU.1). No lane leaks the reveal.
SURVIVES, AND EXTENDS (integration record §4.1, §7.2 and §9). Reveal discipline above stands and now reaches past prose into three further surfaces. It extends to the procedural spawn table (gate 3, chapter-scoped locus tokens, since no prose critic reads a spawner). It extends to the substrate read's output before Ch 39 (gate 4: over-drawn ground, drought, an old wound in the density, and never a signature, a hand, a mark, or a negation of one, because the negated who-frame still plants the scaffolding). And it extends to the absorb-path power names (gate 5: descriptive natural-voice names for what they do until the Ch 76-77 re-titling, with the post-reveal titles arriving as a gated runtime overlay and never as a second column sitting in shipped string data). The art layer is in scope with them: the protagonist's own corrosive and hollow appearance variants are reveal-relevant assets, rendered as SUBTRACTION and never substitution, composing with the integrity-visible law that higher integrity reads softer and warmer while evil integrity reads sharper and colder.
FU.6 New forks for Josh (in addition to the five in §5)
FORK 6 — Adopt the Hollow's negative-vril-blight refinement (FU.1) and the CONTAIN-blight verb with its purify-versus-harvest integrity fork (FU.2)? Recommendation: yes. It makes the hook more canon-native (tying it to the False Naga pattern and the cassus/hollow etymology), sharpens the tone to the R-rated register Josh wants, and is reveal-safer than the original substrate-echo framing. This supersedes the pure-echo read in §2.7 while keeping every firewall.
CLOSED, RULED YES AND EXPANDED (Josh, eighth sitting 2026-07-27, expanded at the ninth; ruling record docs/spine/DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH.md, integration record §4.1). FORK 6 is no longer open. The negative-vril-blight refinement and the CONTAIN-blight verb are adopted, the fork is renamed CLEANSE and ABSORB, and the class is expanded far beyond this fork's own option into a content pillar across eight axes: realm-traversal cleansing, rift dungeons, the visibility law, affliction cleansing, evil-path hollow abilities, the event layer, the world's cleansing meter, and the vimana traversal-encounter layer. At the ninth sitting Josh removed the hard line for the Hollow class, ruled that the player defeats the Hollow, and set the encounter-design mandate and the find-the-cause loop. Full integration record: docs/pipeline_review/HOLLOW_EXPANSION_INTEGRATION_2026-07-27.md.
FORK 7 — Ratify the ontology-driven collectibility map (FU.3) as the creature layer's canon for how supernatural beings are collected? Recommendation: yes. It is the definitive answer to "which folklore monsters are collectible and how," it enforces §17.1 structurally, and it holds the firewall. Its class labels (SACRED / condemned / ambivalent / construct / blight) become the supernatural-being tag on the Beastiary entry template and the T0_Creature_Roster / T0_Boss_Encounter rows.
FORK 8 — Does the EARN lane (lane C — a small curated set of discovery easter-egg quests that grant an ambivalent folk-being as an ordinary-tier companion) exist, and at what count/curation? Recommendation: yes, as a hand-authored set of roughly six-to-twelve, each care-vetted per FU.5, never systemic. This is a scope-and-care call, so Josh's. If Josh prefers zero folklore companions, the map degrades cleanly — lane C empties and every supernatural being routes to DOCUMENT / FIGHT / FREE / CONTAIN / BOND with no other change.
FORK 9 — Confirm the sacred-set invariant (lane A) as a hard line: named living-tradition sacred beings are never in any capture/contain/tame lane, only DOCUMENT/FREE/ALLY. Recommendation: yes; formalize it as a §17.1 coupling so it binds every future build the way HL_0002 and the Boto rule already do. This is a care hard-line, so Josh's to set.
FU.7 Opus-now vs Fable-5 (delta from §6)
Opus now: fold the FU.1 refinement into the §2.7 Hollow spec and the §7 hook; add the "supernatural-being ontology tag" (SACRED / condemned / ambivalent / construct / blight) to the Beastiary entry template and flag it for the T0_Creature_Roster + T0_Boss_Encounter row schema; specify the CONTAIN-blight verb and its purify/harvest fork as design rails (no numbers); mark the sacred-set invariant for the §17.1 coupling pending Josh's FORK-9 nod. Nothing wired into locked canon until Josh rules FORK 6-9.
Fable-5 downstream: author the lane-C EARN quests once Josh sets the count/curation (FORK 8); author each folklore boss's fight-and-resolve content per the class it sorts to (FIGHT / CONTAIN-purge / FIGHT+FREE), coupled to the spine cascade and held to the FU.5 care register; tune the Hollow's dual-spawn (deadzone + extraction-scar) occurrence and the purify/harvest integrity deltas within the §17.13 sigma and §9.2 band discipline; author the sealed sub-codex containment-record UI/cosmetic.
RETITLE AND SCOPE NOTE (integration record §4.1 and §11). Read "the purify/harvest integrity deltas" above as the CLEANSE and ABSORB integrity deltas. The downstream scope now also carries the two-tier split of whisper and content, the world's cleansing meter with its no-lockout law and its per-axis ledger, the evil-path hollow-ability lane with its absorb-depth track held separate from the integrity score, and the four content surfaces: realm traversal, rift dungeons both authored and pop-up, affliction quests, and the event layer. The ranked execution worklist for all of it lives at §11 of the integration record.
