CANON SUBORDINATION — this document is PROPOSAL-TIER: it serves canon and never outranks it.
Canon served: the composition floor atdocs/spine/DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH.md(commitda627060), the era
column of registries/T0_Chapter_Index [ACTIVE v1.2] for CH_02 through CH_13, and Section 10
of every slice page under _source/02_Tier_2_Region_Pages/.
If this document disagrees with canon, CANON WINS and this document is the defect.
TIER: RESEARCH SYNTHESIS, PROPOSAL-TIER. Canon is authority; nothing here re-decides a region's
reading, its era, or its care line. Every substantive claim carries a source — a canon file:line for
our own decisions, a URL or a named work for the world's. Where the scholarly record is thin,
contested, or absent, this document says so in the sentence rather than in a footnote, and it never
presents a reconstruction as an attestation.
Josh graded round one of the generated score and turned down all eighteen candidates. His
composition floor is verbatim at docs/spine/DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH.md (tail, commit da627060):
"Inspiration from the region and time period and theme but also still understanding were an AARPG
and setting the next bar for video game sound tracks", with "ambience and nature and voice and
chants and humming and clapping" named as required layer classes, and "Learn real music theory and
what someone who studied music and got their phd would focus on and improve."
This lane answers the organological half of that. It gives, for each of the twelve slice nodes, what
instruments actually existed there in the period canon assigns, what tuning practice they used, how
an ensemble is put together and led, what the voice layer is, what the place sounds like, what the
care posture is, and what our renderer can and cannot physically play today. It is written to be
consumed three ways at once: by a composer as a brief, by the caption-writer in
harness/music_gen/sa3_generate.py as prompt vocabulary, and by whoever builds the tuning tables as
a requirements list.
Two framing rules, both from canon, bind every section below.
than re-deciding it. Where a page states its evidence stops, this document states the same stop
and marks any external attestation it supplies as a FINDING for the page's own Section 16 verify
list — never as a canon edit.
T0_Theme_Registry carries the same deny_register_list clause: "no region's own register used as the threat signal, systematically
darkened, inverted or menace-coded (CVD 17.1 collective protection expressed in music -- the
darkening operations belong to the antagonist material and travel WITH it, never with the place)"
(registries/T0_Theme_Registry [DRAFT v0.1]/T0_Theme_Registry.csv, every row from line 2 through
line 39). The AARPG translation paragraph in each section is written inside that rule and says
where the threat material actually comes from.
Three confidence tiers are used and each is marked in the sentence that needs it.

~60,000-100,000 BP through pre-colonial Flores ~1000-1500 CE". Two strata, and they need two
completely different organologies.

Pejeng and moko types circulated through Nusa Tenggara as heirloom and bridewealth objects rather
than as played instruments (Wikipedia, Moko drums).
gong-gendang; the gendang is held sacred in Manggarai society (Komodo Guide, above; and
[PEMBELAJARAN GONG GENDANG ... TARIAN CACI DENGAN IRAMA
TAKITU](https://jurnalilmiahcitrabakti.ac.id/jil/index.php/jcp/article/view/4515), which names
takitu as the caci accompaniment rhythm).
and life-crisis ceremonies; the sung repertoire includes the solo and choral circle dances raga,
gezang, danding, sanda and ronda, an mbata harvest song, and korong from western Manggarai
([Celestial Harmonies, Music of Indonesia: Flores,
13175-2](https://www.harmonies.com/releases/13175.htm)).
in the document. The oldest confirmed musical instruments anywhere are the bone flutes of the
Swabian Jura at around 42,000 years before present, the Hohle Fels five-holed flute made from a
vulture wing bone among them; the Divje Babe object at about 43,000 years is disputed and may be
carnivore-chewed bone ([Wikipedia, Prehistoric
music](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prehistoric_music)). Liang Bua's hominin horizon is older
than that by an order of magnitude. Anything melodic placed there is DECLARED INVENTION.
struck wood, whistling, and the cave's own acoustic response. That is a real palette and it is
more frightening than a flute would be.
in the first and second centuries CE, and Dong Son drums spread along the Sunda islands into Nusa
Tenggara (Wikipedia, Pejeng drum). A gong in the
hominin stratum is an anachronism of roughly a hundred millennia. A gong in the 1000-1500 CE
stratum is correct.
"Indonesian gongs" returns central-Javanese court music, which puts the wrong island's aristocracy
into an eastern Indonesian village. The caption must say eastern Indonesian, small set, knobbed and
hand-held and hanging, and must not say gamelan.
repertoire are genuinely Floresian today, and the Celestial Harmonies notes record traditional
Manggarai music appearing inside Catholic services. Both belong to the later strata and to nothing
before them.
No standardised interval system is attested for the Manggarai gong set in the reachable literature.
The honest instruction is a measured per-set pitch table rather than a scale name, and the caption
should ask for a small set of different pitches rather than for a scale. The renderer's real problem
is not the scale but the partials: a knobbed gong is inharmonic, its boss tone and rim tone differ,
and a chromatically pitched sample of a tuned metal bar will read as tuned percussion instead of as a
gong. Pitch a gong sample more than about a fourth from its recorded note and it stops being a gong.
The gong holds the cycle and the gendang drives it, and the pieces are short interlocking cycles that
repeat and hand the beat between players. Caci performances run at least a day and often two or
three, always with drum and gong; a chorus of singers and gong players supplies rhythmic
accompaniment and commentary, with songs narrating the fighters' lineages and past deeds (Komodo
Guide). Diphonic singing is documented in eastern Flores and eastern Timor ([Rappoport, Music as
evidence of settlement: the case of diphonic singing in Eastern Indonesia](
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/281584606_Music_as_evidence_of_settlement_the_case_of_diphonic_singing_in_Eastern_Indonesia_Eastern_Flores_Eastern_Timor)),
which is a CLASS-ATTESTED colour for the region rather than a Manggarai attestation. The voice layer
is therefore: choral circle-dance singing, narrating commentary over the duel, and the throat-register
colour held at reference.
The biome is monsoon cloud forest and volcanic upland: Kelimutu's crater lakes, Mount Inerie, the Wae
Rebo cloud forest, geothermal vents, and inside Liang Bua the dripwater, the bat colony and a cave's
long low-frequency tail. The care line is the page's own, quoted verbatim:

The gendang is held sacred (Komodo Guide), which raises rather than lowers the reference-composition
bar; the reframe that keeps it is to compose the ensemble's shape and never to record a rite.
Melody rides the bamboo flute and the sung line; the engine is the gong cycle; pressure is the
gendang. Menace comes from the CAVE and from the stalking predator, never from the ensemble — the
Ch 2 survival-horror register is built out of dripwater, air movement, stone and the player's own
breath, which is both the care-correct answer and the better horror. The hybrid seam is at the
bottom: struck bronze occupies roughly 300 Hz to 5 kHz and leaves the floor open, so sub-bass and
processed low percussion can carry AAA weight underneath without falsifying the ensemble.
Stack verdict: CANNOT PLAY. The only gong on disk is Idiophones/Struck Idiophones/Gong 1.sfz, a
concert tam-tam class and unpitched; there is no gong-chime, no knobbed gong, no bamboo flute and no
tube zither. Present and honest: Slit Drum, Woodblock, Claves, Frame Drum, Bass Drum, Toms, Claps.
The honest substitute for the gong-waning is no substitute at all — it needs physical modelling or a
recorded ensemble, and the region page already flags the substrate as thin
(flores_island.md:870-873).
PIPELINE HOOK — route: no SFZ; synthesis or performance required for the pitched gongs, with
vcsl/Membranophones/Struck Membranophones/Frame Drum.sfz and Slit Drum.sfz carrying the drum and
struck-wood layers today. Tuning table: per-ensemble measured pitch list, five to eight entries, plus
an inharmonicity note; no scale name. Caption vocabulary: "eastern Indonesian island village, a small
set of hanging and hand-held knobbed bronze gongs of different pitches, hand drums, bamboo flute,
short interlocking cycles that hand the beat between players, highland cloud forest, rain in the air"
— and never the word gamelan. Expected formula-card timbre: spectral_centroid_hz_mean 1500-2600,
spectral_rolloff85_hz_mean 3500-6000, spectral_flatness_mean 0.004-0.02 (raised by inharmonic
bronze partials), octave_band_profile weighted low_mid through presence with a thin sub.
T0_Chapter_Index line 5: "Composite — Pre-colonial Manggarai ~1000-1500 CE through Portuguese
1500s and Dutch colonial 1800s-1900s". Same page, same roster as Ch 2's later stratum, and the
chapter where the ensemble is the content rather than the colour.
The gong-gendang is canonised here as the arc's first vril-active instrument
(flores_island.md:852-855: "canonized as the region's Thread-21 vril-active instrument — the first
demonstration in the arc of an instrument creating audible vril resonance"). That makes three
requirements concrete.

kotekan ladder is its second.

duel's music is diegetic: the ensemble is in the ring, the crowd is around it, and the score gives
way rather than sitting on top.
occasion (Celestial Harmonies notes), which is where the region's ceremonial register lives.
Period honesty and tuning are Ch 2's. The added trap is stratum blending: the Portuguese and Dutch
strata in this chapter's era string carry brass, violin, guitar and hymnody, all of them real on
Flores and all of them wrong in the 1000-1500 CE present. Keep them behind the time-fluctuation
windows. The voice layer gains the caci commentary chorus and the danding circle-dance singing.
Environment gains terraced fields, the Wae Rebo cone houses, and highland rain. Care is
flores_island.md:856-857 again, plus flores_island.md:863 which already stages the ensemble "at
reference register" inside the duel cue.
This is the slice's first interlock-as-mechanic chapter and the duel is the proving ground: the
rhythmic spine escalates by tightening the cycle rather than by stacking layers, which is the same
escalation grammar south_india.md:808-810 specifies for the kalari pit and which the whole slice
should share. Stack verdict: CANNOT PLAY, identically to Ch 2.
PIPELINE HOOK — route, tuning table and timbre as Ch 2. Caption vocabulary adds "a ceremonial whip
duel in a village ring, drums and gongs rising and tightening across the rounds, a chorus of singers
calling the fighters' lineages, terraced highland fields". Formula-card expectation shifts upward at
the duel: spectral_centroid_hz_mean 2000-3200 and a higher note rate, with the composed-rest
budget deliberately low because a duel cue that keeps dropping out reads as indecision.
T0_Chapter_Index line 6: "1200 CE — Bali Kingdom (Warmadewa dynasty); Majapahit-absorption stratum
reached across time-fluctuation windows". This is the chapter where, in canon's own words, "music is
not scoring but structure" (bali.md:1896-1897).
trompong gong-chime rows; the hanging gongs kempur, kemong and gong ageng; kajar as the
time-keeper. The keys and gongs are copper-tin alloy forged and cast
(bali.md:1922-1925).
gambang, with bamboo keys — both belong to the gamelan tua stratum, the old forms
([Smithsonian NMAA, Shimmering Sounds from
Bali](https://asia-archive.si.edu/podcast/shimmering-sounds-from-bali-the-gamelan-ensemble-of-the-indonesian-institute-of-the-arts/);
Bali International, Gamelan Bali).
ensembles (Bali International, above).
(bali.md:1909-1920), and the two consecrated bronzes it names, the bajra and the rubbed
bajra-uter (bali.md:1990-1995).
north Bali around 1915 and first performed publicly in December 1915 at a gong competition in
Jagaraga, and it represented a radical departure from the softer temple ensembles, with heavier and
louder instruments, fast tempos and dramatic shifts ([Wikipedia, Gamelan gong
kebyar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamelan_gong_kebyar); Smithsonian NMAA, above). Kebyar is
the sound the world means by Balinese gamelan and it is seven centuries after this chapter. Every
explosive unison burst is an anachronism.
gede in the middle period. The three-era division tua, madya and anyar is the tradition's own
periodisation (Bali International, above).
associated with later Islamic-era contact; prefer suling for the 1200 CE present and treat the
rebab as CLASS-ATTESTED for the region and late for the period.
irresistible and it must stay out of the present frame; the honest reframe is that the interlock
itself is ancient and the kecak arrangement is modern, so the chapter may use interlocked voices
and must not use kecak's specific figure.
Neither is standardised. Each gamelan has its own embat, its own temperament, and instruments
cannot be swapped between sets (Wikipedia, Slendro;
Wikipedia, Pelog; [IRCAM, The Javanese
Gamelan](http://recherche.ircam.fr/anasyn/peeters/GAMELAN/tuning.html)). A published measurement of
slendro sets finds steps ranging from 206 to 268 cents against 5-EDO's 240 ([An Analysis of a
Gamelan Slendro Tuning](https://www.31edo.com/slendrogamelan.pdf)).
mistuned against each other so the difference frequency becomes an audible pulse, the ombak. Canon
already makes this a build rule — paired instruments are separate audio sources with a controlled
cents offset, never one source with a chorus effect stamped on it, and the offset is a tunable
per-ensemble value (bali.md:1937-1942).
nobody plays, and it erases the ombak entirely, which is the island's audible signature. Renderer
requirements are therefore three, not one: a Scala file per ensemble with measured cents; two
sources per pitch with a per-ensemble offset; and per-note pitch tables rather than a single global
retune, because the offset is not uniform across the register.
the other's rhythmic gaps, so the line is heard and neither player plays it. The named figuration
classes are nyog cag (simple alternation on adjacent scale notes), nyok cok, kotekan telu (three
pitches) and kotekan empat (four pitches, no shared notes between parts), and the patterns subdivide
the core melody four to eight times faster ([Wikipedia,
Kotekan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kotekan)). Canon carries the same mechanics
(bali.md:1953-1957).
bali.md:1955-1956).lancar, tanggung, dados, wilet and rangkep, at one, two, four, eight and sixteen elaborating beats
per core-melody note, and irama is separable from tempo, which is carried independently as laya —
seseg, sedeng or tamban (Wikipedia, Irama). A tradition that
already separates density from speed is a ready-made adaptive-music model, and this is the single
most useful theoretical import in the document.
after each note is as characteristic as the note (bali.md:2118-2120).
speech levels plus Kawi (bali.md:2011-2018), with the four panasar clown-servants translating
and supplying comedy (bali.md:2020-2027). The sung-poetry register for the period is kidung and
kakawin, held at reference.
Paddy water and subak sluices, temple courts, the cliff and surf at Uluwatu, night-village insects,
and the region's most distinctive state, the Nyepi day of silence, where ambient beds drop to wind
and insect and the player's own footsteps become the loudest object in the world
(bali.md:2088-2093). The care line, verbatim: bali.md:2137-2139 — "No reproduction of protected
sacred music: the gamelan register is reference-composed, never sampled from consecrated performance,
and the consecrated repertoire is rendered with weight and is never turned into a combat jingle." The
sharpest specific: bali.md:2142-2144 — "The Barong-Rangda balance-trial gets a ritual cue, not a
boss theme. Rangda is revered-and-feared and is never villainized; she receives no monster sting, no
low-brass motif, and no musical resolution, because the balance is held rather than won." That is the
reframe rather than the removal: the encounter stays, the horror scoring goes.
Melody rides the suling and the gender; the engine is the kotekan interlock; the clock is the gong
cycle; the accents are ceng-ceng and kendang. Menace belongs to the materialized apparatus and to the
beings the tradition itself names as out of balance (bali.md:2154-2158), never to the ensemble. The
hybrid seam is again at the bottom of the spectrum plus one thing more: because the ombak is a real
beat frequency, a synth layer detuned to the same beat rate joins the ensemble instead of sitting
beside it, which is the cleanest way in the slice to put modern low end under a period palette
without falsifying it.
Stack verdict: CANNOT PLAY, and this is the worst case in the slice because the ensemble is the
chapter's architecture. There is no gamelan of any kind on disk. Nearest neighbours and what each
costs: Vibraphone with hard mallets has the closest attack and decay of anything present but is a
manufactured Western timbre with harmonic partials where bronze is inharmonic; Glockenspiel is steel
and rings far too long; Marimba is wood; Hand Chimes and Finger Cymbals and Agogo Bells give bell
colour without the gong-chime's pitch grid; Gong 1 is a tam-tam. Even with a perfect substitute the
tuning requirement defeats a fixed sample map, because the pair offset has to be applied per note.
PIPELINE HOOK — route: synthesis or a recorded ensemble; no SFZ route exists. Tuning table: a Scala
file per ensemble in slendro and in pelog with measured non-equal cents, plus a paired-offset table
in cents per pitch, plus a declared beat-rate parameter per zone (bali.md:1940-1942 already asks
for a village, a temple and a performance ensemble each with its own signature). Caption vocabulary:
"a Balinese village bronze ensemble of the old kind, interlocking metallophone parts that hand a
single fast line between two players, a deep gong closing each cycle, hand drums leading, bamboo
flute, shimmering paired tuning, temple courtyard, paddy water" — and never kebyar, never
virtuosic, never explosive. Expected formula-card timbre: spectral_centroid_hz_mean 1800-3200,
spectral_rolloff85_hz_mean 4500-8000, spectral_flatness_mean 0.006-0.03 (the highest in the slice,
because inharmonic partials plus the ombak beating broaden the spectrum), octave_band_profile
weighted upper_mid and presence with a genuinely thin sub and low_bass unless a hybrid layer
is declared.
T0_Chapter_Index line 7 sets a composite era anchored at "1200 CE Srivijayan decline (175 years
after Chola sack of Palembang)" with a Majapahit composite and an Angkor and Champa excursion leg.
The region page opens Section 10 by stating that its manuscript sources carry almost no instrumental
ethnography and that the region's sound is built around speech and song rather than an ensemble
mechanic (sumatra_java.md:2233-2241). That is the governing fact.
aerophone whose melody closely mirrors the drums; taganing, five tuned single-headed drums hung in
a row and named tingting, paidua ni tingting, painonga, paidua odap and odap-odap, played
melodically, which is rare in Indonesia; gordang and odap as the bass drums; ogung, four gongs
named oloan, ihutan, panggora and doal, which mark and divide the rhythmic cycles; and hesek,
typically a struck sheet of iron or a bottle ([Aural Archipelago, Life, Death, and Gondang in North
Sumatra](https://www.auralarchipelago.com/auralarchipelago/gondang); [Gondang sabangunan ensemble
music of the Batak Toba people: musical instruments, structure, and
terminology](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/233372119_Gondang_sabangunan_ensemble_music_of_the_Batak_Toba_people_Musical_instruments_structure_and_terminology_1)).
Gondang hasapi is the indoor counterpart, built around the hasapi lute.
at Borobudur depict lutes with piriform or oblong soundboxes carrying two to five strings, cylindrical
drums struck with sticks or bare hands, barrel drums, and a suling; the depicted instruments
resemble Dayak sapè and keledi more than Indian or Thai types ([InJourney, Ancient Musical
Instruments in the Sound of
Borobudur](https://borobudur.injourneydestination.id/en/ancient-musical-instruments-in-sound-of-borobudur/);

repertoire are substantially an eighteenth and nineteenth century formation. At 1200 the direct
evidence from Javanese soil is the reliefs, and the reliefs give lutes, drums and flutes. A full
bronze court gamelan at Borobudur is a five-hundred-year projection.
Srivijayan port is a misattribution inside a single chapter, and the page's own zone split keeps
them apart.
themselves are old, so the reframe is "shaken bamboo, ungraded, not a tuned set" rather than
removal.
port's working sound and the voice.
The page asserts no interval system and says why: "Musical theory here is prosodic and formulaic
rather than tuning-theoretic, and that is the honest statement of what the sources support"
(sumatra_java.md:2434-2435). What the build has instead are verse shapes — the four-line umpama
against the Malay pantun model, the marked lexicon of the andung lament, the formal arrangement of a
tonggo-tonggo prayer, the borrowed-language inclusions of a tabas chant (sumatra_java.md:2436-2438).
Composition takes its constraints from verse shape and register. For gondang the requirement is again
a measured per-ensemble pitch table for the five taganing and the four ogung, not a scale.
Taganing and sarune move together as the melodic pair; the four ogung interlock to mark and divide
the cycle; hesek is the invariant timekeeper; the musicians, the pargonsi, play from the songkor, a
balcony space in the gable of the traditional house (Aural Archipelago). The music interlocks with
tortor dance and with call-and-response between musicians, dancers and ceremonial leaders. Gondang is
performed at pesta adat, and the most elaborate is the saur matua funeral for one who reached old age
with living successful descendants (Aural Archipelago). The voice layer is the region's real
instrument: sung lament, chanted spell, arranged prayer, narrative riddle, told story
(sumatra_java.md:2235-2237).
Toba's caldera lake and Samosir, monsoon forest, Merapi's vents, the Palembang river port and the
strait, and at Borobudur a terraced stone ascent whose acoustic changes level by level. The care
line, verbatim: sumatra_java.md:2570-2575 — "the pustaha's ritual CONTENT is referenced, never
reproduced. Real divination and medicine formulae, real tabas, real mantras are named, framed and
heard as performance texture — they are not transcribed into the game as working text or delivered
intact as recitable lines. The voiced-inscription cue is composed to the sound of the register, not
lifted from a formula, and the gondang is reference-composed, never sampled from consecrated
performance." The page also bars any antagonist cue on the community and gives Naga Padoha a trial
cue with no monster theme (sumatra_java.md:2576-2584).
This is the slice's voice-first region and it should sound like one. Melody rides a solo voice or the
sarune; the engine is the ogung cycle; the monument ascent is terraced, near-silent and gets no
portent scoring (sumatra_java.md:2449-2454). Menace belongs to one corrupt individual, the broker,
and the beings the datu's own tradition condemns (sumatra_java.md:2576-2580).
Stack verdict: CANNOT PLAY the ensemble; CAN PLAY the voice-and-ambience design if a voice source is
found. There is no double reed and no gong-chime; the oboe is the nearest sarune substitute and reads
European; Timpani plus Toms is a poor taganing substitute because it loses the melodic-drum idea
entirely, which is the ensemble's most distinctive property. Hesek is the one instrument the stack
plays perfectly — Anvil.sfz and Brake Drum.sfz are struck metal with no tradition attached.

Tuning table: measured pitch list for five taganing and four ogung, per ensemble. Caption vocabulary:
"a north Sumatran highland ceremonial ensemble, a double-reed oboe leading with a row of five small
tuned drums answering it note for note, four deep gongs marking the cycle, a struck iron

T0_Chapter_Index line 8: "Composite — Ancient Sinhalese kingdom periods (Anuradhapura through
Polonnaruwa) with Vedda continuous tradition".

barrel drum played by hand on one side and stick on the other; thammattama, a twin kettle-drum pair

model where the left and right heads are separate sources rather than one sample pitched twice.
Canon supplies an unusually complete performance procedure, which is what makes this region
composable despite a thin instrument record.

that builds across real hours and resolves in silence rather than a sting
(sri_lanka.md:940-941) is the slice's best argument that a cue may end by stopping.

continuous drone, intensity can be carried entirely by what enters above it, and a cue can go from
near-silence to full without a single crossfade. The kalari's called cadence is the rhythmic spine and
canon specifies that it escalates by tightening rather than by layering
(south_india.md:808-810). The command-forms travel outside the pit, appearing in the texts of a
brahman variety entertainment (south_india.md:793-794). The medical-verse tradition is sung and
taught verse by verse (south_india.md:796). Vedic chanting and Tamil devotional verse are carried at
reference register (south_india.md:797-798).
Temple-city crowd, forge and quench and the grinding bench, Ghats forest wet and close, rain on palm
thatch, hill-shrine wind, and the specific sound of bare feet on hot stone. The care line, verbatim:
south_india.md:800-803 — "the page reproduces no formula, no chant text and no consecrated
performance. The command cadence is composed at reference register from its documented FUNCTION — a
rhythmic call that sets the tempo of a sequence and names its moves — and no real master's recorded
commands are used. Protected sacred music is referenced, never sampled." Note the shape of that: the
reframe that keeps the material is composing from the FUNCTION rather than from the text, and it
generalises to every chant in the slice.
The drone is the engine; the carrier is the yazh or the voice or the kuzhal; the tavil and parai are
the pressure; the called cadence is the combat clock. Menace has an unusually clean home here because
canon gives the ascent an oppressive register under the asura that clears at the summit
(south_india.md:810-811) — the oppression is the antagonist's, not Tamil Nadu's. The craft-street
working bed is named as the arc's first music that means safety (south_india.md:807-808), which is a
leitmotif function rather than an ambience.
Stack verdict: PARTIALLY PLAYABLE, and this is the region with the slice's one genuinely honest
substitution. vsco2_ce/Harp.sfz and vcsl/Chordophones/Composite Chordophones/Folk Harp.sfz are
plucked harps and the yazh is a harp; the substitution costs the skin soundboard's damping and the
gut strings' softer attack, and it is defensible with those two losses declared.
vsco2_ce/ContrabassSusVB.sfz can hold a drone indefinitely. There is no double reed, no barrel drum
with a tuned right head, and no instrument in either library that can execute a gamaka.

Nothing is asserted, and the page's restraint is correct. The one tuning-adjacent requirement is the
muezzin's line: adhan practice is maqam-inflected and microtonal, so a reference-composed call must
not be quantised to twelve-tone equal temperament, and it must be composed rather than recorded —
the call is a real religious act and a sampled one is a consecrated performance by another name.
What is attested is small and is quoted rather than expanded: at the Makunduchi New Year, as the
burning hut is circled, women sing; in the evening of the same day there are dances
(swahili_coast.md:845-847). The pan-regional default the page permits is lead-and-chorus
call-and-response with clapping. The voice layer is therefore women's ensemble singing at the
festival, the muezzin's solo line across the town, and the many-voiced market — and canon's own brief
already names the market bed as many-voiced and busy (swahili_coast.md:864-865).
This is the slice's richest environmental palette and it carries the chapter: the call to prayer over
coral-stone streets; the harbour with rigging, cordage and hulls working against a quay; the reef,
which sounds different from open water and is the chapter's danger cue; and the monsoon as a low

belongs to the naval boss and the aware vessel, not to the town.
Stack verdict: MOST PLAYABLE IN THE SLICE, precisely because the palette is percussion, voice and
environment. Frame Drum, Conga, Bongos, Shaker, Large, Cabasa, Claps cover hand percussion
and rattle classes honestly, and none of those file names carries a named living tradition, so the
wave-two care rule loads them without a cross-cultural claim

Canon supplies the strongest adaptive warrant in the whole slice and it is worth quoting: performance
"varies with the occasion — from simple recitation to elaborate cantillation according to the
character of the feast and the liturgical prescription for that part of the service, with a cantor and
antiphonal response" (ethiopia.md:745-747), and the page's own reading is that this is "an adaptive
music system described in a 1967 lecture: the same service sounds different on different days by
rule" (ethiopia.md:747-748). Three zema manners — ge'ez, araray and ezel — each attach to a
different person of the Trinity (Britannica). The professionals are the debtera, whose chief duty is to
chant the psalms and hymns and who are trained in sacred poetry, in song, and in dance and rhythmical
movement (ethiopia.md:750-752), which makes the musician, the scholar, the scribe and the
warder-off of demons the same office (ethiopia.md:752-754). The tabot procession adds the beating of
staffs or prayer-sticks and the rattling of sistra to the singing and dancing
(ethiopia.md:717-718). Ululation is idiomatic across the Horn and belongs in the voice layer as
crowd rather than as solo.
High-altitude Simien wind, Lalibela's vertical stone reverberation, coffee-slope warmth and the
three-pour buna, parchment and quill and page-turn in the scriptorium, stele-plain stillness. The care
line, verbatim: ethiopia.md:764-766 — "The liturgical-chant register informs all of it at REFERENCE
level only — the region's zema is drawn from the documented tradition and no protected sacred music
is sampled, reproduced, or imitated in a consecrated form, and no liturgical text is set." The
naming rule is held clear of any revered saint (ethiopia.md:385), and the Fetha Nagast's own line
that the consecrated includes abstinence (ethiopia.md:180) is the frame for anything that touches

The sistrum is the clock, the käbäro is the engine, the krar or washint is the carrier, and the
feast-variable cantillation is the adaptive system — stated by the tradition rather than imposed on
it, which is the strongest possible answer to "does the adaptivity feel bolted on." Menace belongs to
the extraction rigging in the 1937 window, which canon already scores as going hard and mechanical
(ethiopia.md:758-759), and to the warded scroll, which is tense and patient rather than
horror-stinging (ethiopia.md:761-762).
Stack verdict: SUBSTITUTABLE WITH DECLARED LOSS, and one absence changes the region's identity.

is wrong in a specific way worth writing down: a harp's strings run to a soundboard while a lyre's

masenqo stand-in and reads European. Timpani 1 - Hit.sfz and Frame Drum.sfz carry käbäro and
nägarit class. The identity-changing gap is the sistrum: Sleigh Bells.sfz and Tambourine 1.sfz are
the nearest rattles and both are wrong in decay and density, and the sistrum's rattle is what makes a

years before present, and the ~43,000-year-old Divje Babe object is contested as carnivore-chewed
bone (Wikipedia, Prehistoric music). The gap between the chapter's deep horizon and the earliest
object anyone will call an instrument is roughly 1.76 million years. A bone flute at Olduvai is not
a stretch; it is a category error.

known from Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Sudan, Uganda and Zambia, and Tanzania has many, some
associated with ancestral and rainmaking ceremonies ([Fagg, Rock Gongs and Rock Slides, Man 1956;
M. Catherine Fagg, Rock Music, 1997, summarised at

The caveat that must travel with it: a percussion mark on a boulder carries no date, so a rock gong
is a place-appropriate and undatable instrument, which happens to be exactly right for a chapter
about a place that has been keeping records for a very long time.

(rift_valley.md:627-629). Externally: women begin the singing and after an hour or two the men's
dancing begins, with the women's clapping and singing maintaining rhythm and focus ([Wikipedia, San

characterised by cyclical song forms, interlocking vocal parts, dense handclap polyrhythms and
vocal techniques including yodel-like register shifts and hocketing ([Melodigging, Khoisan folk

Nyae Nyae Ju|'hoansi by Emmanuelle Olivier are held at the British Library sound archive ([NTS,

documentation for composition, never as material.
No tuning system is asserted for either stratum and none should be. For the living stratum the
ensemble is bodies: interlocking women's clapping as the ground, one or more song-lines above it, men
dancing, the fire as the room. The voice layer is the whole layer. Environment is the score's main
substance here: deep-time wind over the gorge and its measurable reverb tail against a savanna's
almost none, soda-lake flamingo mass, escarpment thermals, the thin unstable air of the Bale bench,
and hour-keyed insect and bird strata. The care line, verbatim: rift_valley.md:629-632 — "No
protected sacred music is reproduced, sampled, transcribed or notated, and the reference register
means a composed cue that honours the shape of the practice, never a recording or a reconstruction of
it. Because no musicological source is in the corpus, no rhythmic structure, scale, call pattern or
instrument is described anywhere on this page." The page also bars the living-fossil trope, which it
correctly identifies as the failure this chapter is structurally exposed to
(rift_valley.md:978). The reframe that keeps the chapter is the page's own: the living-present bed
at the Eyasi shore is warm, unhurried and human-scaled, deliberately opposite in register to the
deep-time bed so the two strata never sound like one (rift_valley.md:639-640).
This is by design the arc's quietest bed — near-absence with a floor of wind and stone
(rift_valley.md:637-638) — and the panel cue is built as the dance's counterweight rather than as
horror, pressure without menace-scoring, resolving into the old brightness on the win
(rift_valley.md:645-646). The playable engine is the clap, and a combat cue whose entire rhythmic
bed is human handclapping is both authentic and genuinely unusual for a AAA action RPG. The hybrid
seam is the deep-time bed: a sub-bass drone under wind is not a cultural claim, so it is free.
Stack verdict: THE MOST PLAYABLE PERCUSSION IN THE SLICE AND THE LEAST PLAYABLE VOICE. Claps.sfz,
Shaker, Large.sfz, Cabasa.sfz, Woodblock.sfz, Claves.sfz, Slit Drum.sfz, Frame Drum.sfz
and Bass Drum 1.sfz are precisely the body-percussion and struck-idiophone classes involved, and
Anvil.sfz and Brake Drum.sfz are the nearest available approximation to a rock gong's ringing
metallic stone. The blocking gap is absolute: no choir exists in either set, verified against both
pinned trees, and two identity cards already name a choir or a solo voice
(harness/music_gen/extend_stack_wave2.py:52-58). A region whose entire content is voice and clapping
is half-playable today.

Congo region only in the nineteenth century, and its rapid and far-reaching distribution was fuelled
by colonialism, which stimulated unprecedented labour migration and the mixing of unfamiliar peoples
in mines, plantations and factories ([Grinnell College Musical Instrument Collection,
likembe](https://omeka-s.grinnell.edu/s/MusicalInstruments/item/2668); [UC Davis Anthropology
Museum, Lamellophone from the
Congo](https://anthromuseum.ucdavis.edu/news/october-2-2015-lamellophone-congo)). A thumb piano in a
pre-colonial forest scene is a colonial artefact placed a century early, and it is the exact shape
of the "sounds African, is modern" error.

balophone troubadour teams (central_africa_congo.md:1056-1060) — so they are revisit-window
material and never the forest present.
(Wikipedia, Simha Arom); his and Renaud's mid-1970s Baka
recordings and the UNESCO collection issues are documentation, and the sourcing law makes them
reference and never material ([Smithsonian Folkways, UNESCO Collection: Music of the Aka and Baka

The tuning statement here is of a different kind and it is the most interesting in the document: the
scale is distributed across bodies rather than across an instrument. In the flute and horn ensembles
each performer holds exactly one pitch and the melody exists only in the interplay (Grokipedia, Pygmy
music, summarising Arom). Equal temperament is not the problem; monophonic thinking is. Renderer
requirement: one voice or one source per pitch, each with independent timing and independent
micro-tuning, and never a chord pad or a stacked sample — because a pad has no seam, and the seam is
the music.
Canon supplies a complete arrangement instruction and it should be implemented literally. The women's
walking chorus: ribald solos one at a time, each trying to outdo the last, the rest joining in a
throaty chorus that cascaded downward like a waterfall; each girl held her note as the others came in
after her, swelling the volume of a great chord until they had no breath left, then all stopping
together sharply and suddenly and cocking their heads to listen for the echo the forest sent back
(central_africa_congo.md:1029-1035). The page's own reading is right: overlapping entries, a held
drone under a descending cascade, a hard collective cutoff, and a listened-for reply from the
environment, with the listening-for-the-echo gesture as the region's musical signature.
The molimo: the songs' words are few and the central one says the forest is good; the nightly chorus
runs from evening to the small hours and grows more serious toward morning; men sing lying on their
hunting nets or gazing into the fire, and a father may sing quietly with his mouth against his infant
son's ear; the presence departs with the instrument as its voice recedes into the forest
(central_africa_congo.md:1021-1027). No adult male may sleep through it.
Yodel is the technique rather than the ornament: register shifts between chest and head voice used
compositionally, documented comparatively for two central African cultures ([Furniss, Diyei and yeli:
Yodeling in two musical cultures of Central
Africa](https://shs.hal.science/halshs-03413637/file/Furniss_AAWMMN_Vol_1.pdf)). A documented
call-and-response greeting exists as a model for how this region meets a stranger: an improvising
woman song leader with a line the women answered, about the arrival of a stranger
(central_africa_congo.md:1060-1063) — which is a better introduction to a region than any
exposition.
The forest is the instrument's room and canon specifies the acoustic exactly: closed-canopy terrain
with a very short reverb tail at the floor and a long one in the crowns
(central_africa_congo.md:1089-1090), insect and bird strata that change by hour, rapids, camp fire,
the ember unwrapped and blown. The care line, verbatim: central_africa_congo.md:1075-1078 — the
molimo night is "reference-composed at a respectful distance from the documented practice, few words,
a low male chorus over a sustained tube tone, with the entry-and-recession structure the record
describes; never sampled from consecrated performance and never staged as a horror cue, because the
theology has no evil in it." The Bwiti engosie is "referenced and never reproduced, and never scored
as intoxication" (central_africa_congo.md:1081-1083). Two further care notes belong here. The
molimo is kept from women and children in the tradition's own practice, so a cue that stages it as
spectacle for the player inverts the practice; witnessing at a distance is the honest surface. And
central African forest polyphony has a long history of being commercially sampled without consent,
which is the strongest practical argument in the slice for reference-composition — the rule already
in T0_Theme_Registry every row, "no consecrated-performance sampling and no fine-tune on one (the
sourcing law)", is here also a plain ethics argument and not only a licence one.
The hocket is the mechanic. A cue in which each participant carries exactly one pitch and the melody
exists only while they are all present is the region's own practice, and it is a genuinely new idea
for a combat or companion system — the tune degrades correctly when someone falls, without a
designer writing a degrade rule. Menace belongs to the Free State station, which canon scores as
mechanical, period, tightening on repetition, with the incongruous European gramophone as the
machine's tell (central_africa_congo.md:1084-1085) — the machine gets the antagonist material and
the forest never does.
Stack verdict: CANNOT PLAY, because the region is voice and there is no voice. Claps.sfz,
Claves.sfz, Woodblock.sfz and Slit Drum.sfz cover ngbengbe honestly; Folk Harp.sfz is a
class-adjacent ngombi substitute with the tradition's own symbolism necessarily absent; the molimo's
low sustained tube has no honest substitute and a straight-muted trombone reads orchestral. Water
drumming is the cheapest authentic win available: it is a foley asset rather than a sampler asset, it
can be recorded in a bathtub with a hydrophone, and it is unmistakable.

small oblong blowing opening near the tip, played standing in line or circle by horn size, blown in
unison, the melody controlled by simultaneously blocking and opening passages at base and tip with
both hands; plus yang the small corn-stalk flute, kwarak the big one, and the hollow reed flute
(west_africa.md:2503-2509).

Mali and Guinea whose global ubiquity comes from mid-twentieth-century national ballets and touring
masters, with Les Ballets Africains from the 1950s and the international careers of Mamady Keïta and

History, Types and Players](https://www.ipassio.com/wiki/musical-instruments/percussion/djembe)). A
djembe in Ile-Ife, Abomey or Bandiagara is a wrong-culture instrument, and a generator asked for
African drums returns one every time. The kora and the balafon carry the same problem: both are
Manding and belong to the Senegambia zone.
certainly predate the dundun (west_africa.md:2453-2455), and the tension drums have frequently
replaced the Ogboni drums in the king's court and royal festivals (west_africa.md:2410-2413). So a
1000-1400 CE Ile-Ife scene leads with pedestal drums and lets the dundun be the later court
instrument.

This is the one region in the slice where the correct implementation is a synthesis model rather than
a sample map, and the reason is mechanical.

tensioned and tight membrane states, with the glides between them carrying the tone inflections of
the language (Durojaye et al., above). Yoruba uses three distinct level tones for phonemic

MIDI note list. A fixed-pitch sample cannot glide, so no sample library can play a dundun at any
quality; the closest honest route is a physically modelled membrane with a tension parameter.
specification: praise poetry performed in the early morning, dawn music for listening rather than
dancing, all secondary dance instruments excluded except the gudugudu, which alone supplies the
basic pattern against which no fewer than five talking drums play poetry in unison
(west_africa.md:2421-2425).
describing the particulars of a crime that has taken place, praising the king, or carrying
accusatory statements criticising chiefly abuses (west_africa.md:2425-2428). A city whose drums
report crimes before sunrise is a public news channel, and canon builds the investigation beat on it.
quoting an oriki often leads automatically to historical narrative and swells the reputation of the
person addressed (west_africa.md:2431-2436). Every drummer knows the royal and founding lineages
and works with the Arokin, civil servants appointed to preserve oral history who were themselves
drummers, so a visitor's lineage can be drummed on arrival (west_africa.md:2442-2447).
and with stick-and-left-hand while the two smaller give intermittent rhythmic phrases dropped almost
as soon as they become clearly established, leaving the listener suspended in the middle of the
phrase (west_africa.md:2450-2453). That is a compositional device, not a description.
rituals for the gods, and here it is song, not the drum, that calls the ancestral deities
(west_africa.md:2465-2467); once drums enter, a steady beat runs under the falsetto singing of a
singer who recounts each ancestor's deeds, and as he finishes, the chorus of voices, rattles and
gongs takes a new refrain, the drum rhythm changes and the patterned dancing resumes
(west_africa.md:2467-2470); each dancer stops near the drums, faces them and executes a short
figure (west_africa.md:2470-2471).
day, and at the public ceremony the chief sits in an open court surrounded by councillors, drummers
and minstrels with drumming and dancing in which everyone joins (west_africa.md:2518-2520). An
Akan funeral demands the turbulence of a festival shorn of its glaring gaiety, with drums and other
instruments, the sound of guns, and human voices singing, wailing and speaking intermingled, dirges
sung throughout (west_africa.md:2523-2526) — a complete mix instruction.
attributed to a blind itinerant singer who roamed the area (west_africa.md:2490-2492); the mask
complex has its own ritual language, sigu so, learned in a three-month initiation
(west_africa.md:2492-2494); the drummers are a named caste beside the blacksmiths, the
leatherworkers and the segeu (west_africa.md:2495-2497).

from a big cow horn (west_africa.md:2513-2515), Akan dirges, and the Dogon's ten-hour cycle.
The dawn city before the market opens; the Bandiagara cliff's long reverb against a single voice; surf
and ship's tackle and iron and chain and ledger paper at the coast factory; water and weight at the
goldfields; the forest road. The care lines, verbatim and several, because this page carries the
slice's hardest ones.
west_africa.md:2455-2459 — the Ogboni drums are "a hard care line rather than an asset: sacredobjects possessing medicinal powers, their sides rubbed with sacrificial blood at annual ceremonies
... with only cult members allowed to see the carved decoration. The build never shows that carving
and never voices that drum."
west_africa.md:2472-2476 — Herskovits recorded that the songs were translated as they were sungbut could not be taken down at the time, and that because of their sacred character it was
impossible to obtain texts or translations away from the ceremonial situation: "The ethnographer
could not have those texts; neither will this build."
west_africa.md:2515-2516 — the kok nji festival carries a documented seclusion rule, "which is onereason the build references this material at register rather than staging the ceremony."
drum is present in the world and is neither shown nor voiced; the ceremony is referenced at register
rather than staged; and the coast factory has no indigenous music at all, which is the point
(west_africa.md:2540-2542).
The drum as language is a mechanic, not a texture. Canon already specifies arrival drumming keyed to
world state — the player's accumulated standing drummed as they approach a compound, a diegetic
oneshot the score gives way to, its content keyed to world state rather than to the hour
(west_africa.md:2535-2537) — and that is the best diegetic-music idea in the slice, because it makes

fragment, the iron, the chain and the ledger paper (west_africa.md:2540-2542), and the sovereign is
never fought so the boss cue escalates argument rather than violence (west_africa.md:2553-2554).
Stack verdict: CANNOT PLAY, and it is the second-worst case after Bali. No variable-tension drum
exists in either library and no substitute can exist, because the instrument's defining property is a
pitch glide a fixed sample cannot produce; Conga.sfz, Bongos.sfz and Tom 1.sfz give a hand-drum
family and lose the entire point. What the stack does play honestly is the idiophone layer, and here
one licensed cross-load is worth naming: vcsl/Idiophones/Struck Idiophones/Agogo Bells.sfz carries a
named living tradition in its file name, and the wave-two rule permits loading such an instrument only
for a card whose region page attests that instrument class for that region
(harness/music_gen/extend_stack_wave2.py:37-43). This page does attest the agogo class
(west_africa.md:2410-2412 on bells, and the sekere and agogo in the ensemble literature), so the
agogo loads here and only here in the slice. Shaker, Large.sfz and Cabasa.sfz cover sekere class;
Claps.sfz covers the Fon chest-palm layer.
PIPELINE HOOK — route: vcsl/Idiophones/Struck Idiophones/Agogo Bells.sfz (licensed cross-load, this

that this brief writes itself, because the archive contains a song catalogue whose organising
principle is that a song belongs to a specific creature, person or state (south_africa.md:601-603).

The bow is the tuning system. A mouth-resonated bow's fundamental barely changes; the melody lives in
the harmonics the player's mouth cavity selects, which is what produces the gora's droning
overtone-rich accompaniment (Melodigging, above). That is the opposite of a tempered scale, and no
keyboard rendering of it is honest: sampling a bow at chromatic pitches replaces a harmonic-selection
instrument with a pitched one. Renderer requirement: a harmonic-series source with a swept formant
filter, or a recorded bow. Nothing in either library reproduces it, and the mechanism statement here
is acoustics rather than a field measurement, which this document marks rather than hides.
Khoisan practice is characterised by cyclical song forms, interlocking vocal parts, dense handclap
polyrhythms, and vocal techniques including yodel-like register shifts and hocketing (Melodigging,
above). At the healing dance the women begin the singing and the men's dancing follows, with the
women's clapping and singing maintaining rhythm and focus (Wikipedia, San healing practices). Leg
rattles put the dancer in the percussion section. Canon's design line follows from the archive's own
organisation: not one regional theme but a catalogue of short named songs, each attached to a thing in
the world, so the region's soundtrack is discovered rather than triggered — a player who learns a
creature learns its song, and the Broken String is the region's emotional cadence, reserved for the
two moments that earn it (south_africa.md:610-613).
Drakensberg amphitheatre wind and rock and six hundred painted sites, Kalahari sand and heat-silence,
Cape surf, Blombos cave, Great Zimbabwe's dry-stone enclosure, and the Kimberley and Witwatersrand
workings where the stamp battery runs. The care line, verbatim: south_africa.md:620-622 —
"Protected-music note: no sacred ceremonial content is reproduced. The trance-dance and rain-rite
music is referenced and never recorded, performed or synthesized, and no melody attributed to a living
ceremonial tradition enters the score." Note the wording is stricter here than on any other slice page:
it bars synthesis of the ceremonial melodies as well as recording and performance, so the composed
material for this region must be the region's shape and never its tunes.
The named-song catalogue is a collectible system that is also authentic practice — the rarest kind of
alignment in the slice, and it should be built as canon describes it rather than converted into a
conventional region theme. The boss music is already solved and it is the best idea of its kind here:
because the third phase runs the whip-calls on the stamp-battery timings, the music and the combat
grammar are the same object, and the industrial layer should be built as a rhythm bed the player
learns to read (south_africa.md:616-618). Menace lives entirely in the machine, which is exactly
where §17.1 wants it.
Stack verdict: SPLIT. The industrial half is fully playable today — Anvil.sfz, Brake Drum.sfz,
Bass Drum 1.sfz, Snare Drum, Rope Tension.sfz and Timpani 1 - Hit.sfz build a stamp battery
convincingly, and none of those file names carries a living-tradition claim. Claps.sfz,
Shaker, Large.sfz, Cabasa.sfz and Sleigh Bells.sfz cover clapping and leg-rattle classes
honestly. The /Xam half is unplayable: there is no voice set and no bow, and voice plus bow is the
entire palette.

in sub; mine: centroid 800-1600 but a much higher note rate, strong low_bass, and a near-constant
onset grid that the complexity index will read as high and the novelty index as low, which is correct.
T0_Chapter_Index lines 2 and 3 give region_primary as Fairy Realm and era as "Pre-game timeframe
(dimensional)" and "Pre-game (dimensional)". There is no organology to research and inventing one
would be the error, so what follows is what canon already implies for the palette.
T0_Theme_Registry line 23, FAM_THE_OTHERWORLD.allow_register_list: "each realm's own invented register, per the
realm design directive -- these are REAL otherworlds and take grandest-display treatment, not a
generic ethereal wash". Its deny list adds that a realm register may never be built by exoticising a
living human tradition.
T0_Theme_Registry line 14, HOME_AND_LOSS.allow_register_list: "full, luminous, unhurried at the origin; reduced to
near-silence at the mother's scene; returning to the abundance register INTACT AND UNIRONISED at the
exit, because the plenitude is REAL and the score must never retroactively mourn it", with no
prophetic or foreshadow cue anywhere in the origin.
harness/music_gen/sfz_palette.py:18-29 alreadyapplies, and that file states it well: the four VCSL entries it admits are "concert-manufactured
instruments with no living-tradition claim attached — wine glasses, a bowed vibraphone, a bowed
psaltery, hand chimes", and the wine glasses are described as "a real acoustic sound with no
tradition attached to it, which is exactly what an INVENTED otherworld register is allowed to be"
(sfz_palette.py:191-194). The fairy realm is where that palette belongs.
culture. Friction tone with almost no attack, sympathetic resonance, a plucked or bowed body with an
unusual decay, and a tuning that is deliberately neither twelve-tone equal temperament nor any
documented world system. A stretched or compressed octave — partials deliberately non-harmonic —
is the cleanest way to sound non-terrestrial without sounding like anyone's music, and it is
measurable, which means a formula card can verify it.

living people, and using them in the fairy realm would make the realm read as a pastiche of a journey
the player has not taken yet — and would quietly break the deny-list rule about exoticising a living

Bowed and Plucked - LongBow.sfz, vcsl/Idiophones/Struck Idiophones/Hand Chimes.sfz`, over the
register-neutral orchestral base at sfz_palette.py:235-243. Tuning table: an invented Scala file
with a deliberately non-2:1 octave, declared as invention in the cue record. Caption vocabulary: "an
invented otherworld of overwhelming abundance, glass and bowed metal and rubbed rims, a tuning that
belongs to no place on earth, luminous and unhurried and completely unafraid" — and no cultural
adjective of any kind. Expected formula-card timbre: spectral_centroid_hz_mean 2000-4000 (friction
and bowed metal are bright), spectral_flatness_mean very low, 0.0005-0.003, because these are
strongly tonal sustained sources, octave_band_profile weighted mid through brilliance with a
deliberately empty sub at the origin so the Ch 2 cave has somewhere to go.
The pass-2 layer-based architecture needs a small set of structural primitives that are true in every
one of these traditions, so that one adaptive system can be built once and re-voiced twelve times.
There are seven, and each is attested in at least four of the twelve nodes.
(bali.md:1955-1956); Flores's gong-waning interlocking cycle (flores_island.md:855); Sumatra's
four ogung, which mark and divide the rhythmic cycles (Aural Archipelago); Ethiopia's sistra and
prayer-staffs marking the beat (ethiopia.md:726-729); Yoruba's agogo; Fon's gongs. One
implementation: a metric container closed by a low struck tone and subdivided by higher ones, with
the container length as the cue's fundamental unit rather than a bar count.

where each of five to eighteen performers holds one pitch (Grokipedia, Pygmy music); San interlocking

Sri Lankan leg bells (sri_lanka.md:922-923). Josh named clapping in the floor and six of twelve
nodes attest it independently, so it is not a concession to the brief; it is the finding.
levels separable from tempo (Wikipedia, Irama); Ethiopia states the same idea liturgically, the same
service sounding different on different days by rule (ethiopia.md:745-748); canon already specifies
the kalari pit escalating by tightening rather than layering (south_india.md:808-810) and the caci
duel the same way. One implementation: intensity moves by subdivision and by which parts are present,
never by adding a string pad — which is also exactly what layer_mode: swap already means in the
machine cue tables ("layers are interchangeable, never additive, so the melody is present at every
intensity").

Half the slice treats melody as language, which is a strong argument for deriving motif contours
from text rather than from a scale.

the Sigiriya mirror wall thinning to almost nothing so the player hears themselves

one cross-cutting device the current pipeline already measures: the rejection filter's
X_rest_grammar axis is composed rest, and the whole round-one failure was on it
(build/audio/generated/slice_v1/REVIEW_SHEET.md, "Every single rejection is on the same axis").
Round one dropped out roughly two and a half times more often than the corpus does; these five
traditions say when a drop is meaningful, which is what a drop count alone cannot.

Bali, West Africa and Flores are the three where the current sample stack cannot produce the palette
at any quality, and the reasons differ, which matters for how each is solved.
per ensemble and a paired cents offset applied per note, so the fix is a tuning-capable renderer and
not only a sample purchase. It is also the worst loss, because canon makes the ensemble the
chapter's architecture (bali.md:1896-1897).
squeezing the tension cords, and no fixed-pitch sample can do it at any price. The fix is a
physically modelled membrane with a tension parameter, or a player.
in either library, and the one gong present is an unpitched tam-tam. The fix is the cheapest of the
three — a recorded or modelled set of six to eight pitched knobbed gongs would also unlock the
region's canon status as the arc's first vril-active instrument.
Close behind, and worth naming so the ranking is not read as a clean bill for the rest: Sumatra and
Java has no double reed and no melodic drum row; Congo basin and Rift Valley and Southern Africa all
fail on the same single gap, which is that no choir or solo voice exists in either pinned tree
(harness/music_gen/extend_stack_wave2.py:52-58) and three of those regions are voice-first by
canon's own description. A CC0 voice source is the single highest-leverage acquisition in the whole
audio stack, and it unlocks four of the twelve nodes at once.

Six items belong on a region page's Section 16 verify list or in a later ratification pass. None is an
edit and none is asked of Josh; they are recorded here so a later lane finds them.
central_africa_congo.md:1065-1068 names liquindi and the Baka and Aka yodelled polyphony as notattested on its shelf. External attestation now exists for both (Wikipedia, Water drumming;
Grokipedia, Pygmy music summarising Arom; Furniss on yodel), so the gap is closable.
swahili_coast.md:840-843 records a zero census for ngoma and taarab. External attestation existsfor ngoma, zeze, kayamba and siwa as classes, and for taarab as an 1870-onward form that the chapter
must exclude, which turns a gap into a dated exclusion.
rift_valley.md:626-632 records zero instrument substrate. The rock gong is the one instrument classgenuinely at home in that landscape and it is documented across Africa including Tanzania, so it is
offered as a candidate for the page rather than composed into a cue here.
ethiopia.md:774-777 records the instrument substrate as descriptive only and authors no roster.The vernacular roster exists in the general literature and is set out above; whether it enters the
page is that page's call.
flores_island.md:870-873 flags the caci contest detail and gong-waning theory as thin. The takiturhythm name and the gong-gendang ensemble term are now sourced, which narrows the gap.
T0_Theme_Registry region cells carry instrumentation_substrate at the grain of the region page'sSection 10 and no wider, which is correct. If any of the above lands on a page, the matching cell
needs the same edit in the same commit or the two drift apart.
