Layer-2 Inter-Chapter Transitions — the Ch 2 to Ch 21 traveled through-line
Story Spine Layer-2 add-on, authored at the RR-22 window as the whole-range arrival and departure pass over the golden-standard Ch 2 to Ch 21 span. This realizes docs/TRANSITION_TREATMENT.md Layer 2: the connective bridges between chapters — how the protagonist arrives from the previous chapter and departs toward the next — held separate from the chapter bodies because in the 3D build these are their own arrival and departure sequences, not chapter-body prose. It is authored with the whole range in view, since the accumulated sense of travel, the geographic logic of the route, and the emotional carry-over are tunable only at range scale.
What this document is and is not
It is the between-chapter movement layer. Each entry realizes against the departing chapter's End-state carry-forward block (the departure) and the arriving chapter's Continuity anchor block (the arrival), plus a per-boundary transition note, and stays consistent with the ratified travel geography.
It is not new chapters, not a travelogue, and not a scenery catalogue. Bridges are concise; leanness holds. The chapter bodies already carry the Layer-1 intra-chapter traversal; this layer only threads the seams between them.
Its consumer is the 3D build (each seam maps to a discrete arrival or departure sequence asset) and the spine's own continuity discipline (each seam is a state-consistency checkpoint between two carry-forward blocks). It is indexed in docs/DOC_MAP.md.
Governing constraints (bind every seam)
Travel geography is ground-and-water only across this entire span. The whole Ch 2 to Ch 21 range sits inside Act 1-2 (Ch 2 to 37, Flores to the Atlantic): walking, riding, river and coastal sailing. No Vimana flight appears anywhere in this range — the numbered coordinate hunt begins at Ch 41 and controlled flight arrives only at Ch 55 [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Two named excursions run off the straight onward line and double back to it: the Ch 5 mainland-Southeast-Asia leg (up the thalassocratic network to Angkor and Champa) and the Ch 21 Korean-peninsula there-and-back. Both are in-chapter excursions, not onward legs, and the traveled route resumes where it left the coast [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
The one dimensional passage in the range is the Ch 1 to Ch 2 rift-fall — a rift opening with no author and no aim, out in the woods at the edge of the child's range in the fairy realm, at the end of an ordinary bright morning, taking the child, the Child Familiar, and the mother's amulet through together; the origin arrival, and every seam after it is ordinary mortal-world travel [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc] [SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # RULED 2026-07-27 (sixth sitting)].
Reveal discipline binds every seam. No House-of-Velheim name, family, or organized pattern surfaces to the player anywhere in this range — the family first appears only as an individual vessel at Ch 8, and the pattern itself is not surfaced to the player until the mid-game's end and the modern chapters (about Ch 38). The endgame reveal-figure (Ch 76) and the mythological-realm names stay dark. Antagonist recognition is carried as unexplained unease, never as a named pattern [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_08].
The protagonist's internal age is designer-only and never surfaced; the passages carry it forward but do not announce it. The single stage change in the range, Childhood to Adolescence, lands at the Ch 13 to Ch 14 boundary per the D-06 Reclaiming-the-Birthright model.
Through-line ledgers (the accumulated sense of travel, tracked at range scale)
These are the continuity threads the seams must keep coherent across the whole span; each per-boundary entry stays consistent with them.
Internal age (designer-only, never surfaced). Seated on the composite-era time-fluctuation windows: about 7 rising to 9 across Ch 2, 9 through Ch 3 and Ch 4, 10 across Ch 5, 10 through Ch 6 and Ch 7, 11 across Ch 8, 11 to 12 across Ch 10, 12 to 13 across Ch 12, 13 to 14 across Ch 14 (the Childhood-to-Adolescence crossing), 14 through Ch 15 and Ch 16, 14 to 15 across Ch 17, 15 through Ch 18 and Ch 19, 15 to 16 across Ch 20, 16 through Ch 21. The seams carry the already-advanced end-age forward; a passage never resets it.
Familiar accretion (the rotational roster, Shell always present). Shell the Water familiar bonds at Ch 3; Kira at Ch 4; Khan at Ch 5; Muthu at Ch 6; Kasa and Msafiri at Ch 8; Desta across Ch 9 to Ch 10; the Nile Crocodile at Ch 15; the Simurgh at Ch 19; the Koi at Ch 21. Paravani the peacock (South India) stays deferred-and-gated and ranges the passages, and the Sanur Octopus (Bali) stays deferred-and-gated with its bond dormant (carried, not ranging). The Child Familiar, lost at Ch 2, is believed dead by the player yet canonically escaped, its reveal held to Ch 58 on the Truly-Good path — this stays reveal-disciplined at every seam.
Trade home bases (returnable rootedness, distinct from dwelling homes). Trade 3 Blacksmithing and Trade 4 Herbalism root at Ch 7 South India; Trade 10 Fishing and Navigation at Ch 8 Swahili Coast; Trade 1 Animal Communication at Ch 12 Ouidah; Trade 9 Inscription at Ch 15 Egypt; Trade 2 Mining and Trade 5 Alchemy at Ch 19 Persia; Trade 6 Tailoring at Ch 21 China. Each rooted home is carried across all subsequent seams.
The human companion arc. The protagonist travels alone through the ancient islands and the African descent, gathering one-chapter allies who stay rooted to their regions; the healer's child begins as a silent-observation watcher at Ch 3 and formally joins as the active primary traveling companion and journal-keeper at Ch 13, then is held as an intellectual equal after the Ch 16 parallel-capability revelation. From Ch 13 onward the healer's child is the continuous traveling companion across every seam.
Identity concealment. It escalates along the route: a survival reflex at Ch 2 (First Concealment), a strategic discipline at Ch 3 (Active Concealment), then Concealment-with-Hostile-Recognition from Ch 8 (the first fully-aware enemy), sharpening from a single recognizer to a continental detection grid by Ch 19 and Ch 20 (pressure moderate, networked rather than personal). The seams carry this state, never resetting it.
The Sealed Letter and the evidence-journal. The sealed fairy-realm-script letter is entrusted unread at Ch 7, read at Ch 8 Kilwa (its script identified and its Aksumite pointer set, full content held to the Ch 38 reveal), then carried as an uncracked cross-world mystery through the whole range toward its Ch 66 close. The healer's-child evidence-journal goes live at Ch 13, becomes a hunted and encrypted plot object by Ch 17 and Ch 18, and is read as a canon in miniature by Ch 21.
The route at a glance
Flores (rift-fall) to the Manggarai highlands on foot; down to the coast and by sea to Bali; by ship through Sumatra and Java (with the Angkor and Champa excursion) and across the Bay of Bengal to Sri Lanka; across the strait to South India; the monsoon crossing to the Swahili Coast; north by sea to the Ethiopian highlands; on foot south into the Rift Valley and onward into the Congo Basin; west to the Yoruba city-belt; down the length of the continent to South Africa; the interior traverse up the Nile into Kush and Meroe; down the Nile to Egypt; the Arabian-Sea crossing to the Indus; up the Gulf into Mesopotamia; along the coast to the Levant; overland onto the Persian plateau; by caravan onto the Silk Road; east to imperial China and the Korea excursion; and north up onto the Great Wall toward the steppe that opens Ch 22. It is one continuous ground-and-water journey, and the passages below make each seam of it legible.
Seam entries
Ch 1 to Ch 2 — the rift-fall arrival (origin lead-in)
Departure. Not an ordinary departure, and not one the child knows they are making: the last morning in the fairy realm ends in a keep-away chase out into the woods at the edge of the child's range, the Child Familiar running ahead with the mother's amulet in its mouth and the child laughing six steps behind, and the rift opens there and takes all three of them together. The argument of the day before is left unmended and never gets its answer. This is the range's only dimensional passage [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc] [SRC: DECISIONS_PENDING_JOSH # RULED 2026-07-27 (sixth sitting)].
Passage. The fall itself, uncontrolled and disorienting, from a realm of full attunement into a depleted world; the child, the familiar, and the amulet cross together, and the saturating birthright is stripped on the instant of crossing.
Arrival. Waking on cold stone in the dark of Liang Bua Cave in Manggarai western Flores, vril-depleted, a young elven child at the origin node of the whole build order; the Ch 2 start state equals the Ch 1 end state, with no predecessor spine entry feeding it [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_02]. The amulet crossed with them as a worn, unidentified thing rather than as inventory, so the Ch-2 no-inventory start state stands unaffected; its on-Earth staging is a ruled-open integration point and is deliberately not fixed at this seam.
Transition sequence. The sharpest cut in the range, and the cut is the point: the departure face is joy — a game played a thousand times, in a loved place, on a bright morning — and the arrival face is the wound the whole arc is measured from, the fall, the cold stone, the Child Familiar's bite-and-bolt and apparent death. Nothing on the departure side may warn: no dread cue under the chase, no lingering shot on the empty cord, no music turn before the rift. Reveal-disciplined — the familiar's canonical escape is held from every surface; the rift has no author, no aim, and no target, and no line, cue, or camera on any player-facing surface may present the chase or the ward coming off the neck as the cause (at design register the ward off the neck is the ruled lawful mechanism, and it is never narrated), so the guilt the child will carry is theirs and never the narration's verdict; and the corruption the child will meet on Flores predates any family entirely.
Continuity. Internal age about 7 at entry (designer-only), Childhood; no companions; concealment not yet active; integrity at zero; the mother's amulet carried across, worn and unidentified.
Ch 2 to Ch 3 — Flores cave-country to the Manggarai highlands (on foot)
Departure. Down out of the volcanic cone country at dusk, the child comes to the edge of a Manggarai village where the lingko spider-web fields spread out, carrying a first-peer glimpse of Child Teresa and the pull toward contact; a carved mark is left at the Kelimutu waterfall cavern as the Ch 39 revisit anchor [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_02].
Passage. A short overland walk from the jungle and cave-country up into the highland village — the range's first ordinary mortal-world travel, on foot [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Arrival. The child walks up into the cone-roofed mbaru-niang houses of the Wae Rebo village in the Manggarai highlands, arriving as a depleted, hidden elven child with concealment still a survival reflex [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_03].
Transition sequence. A threshold-crossing sequence from wilderness survival into first sustained human society: the fields resolving out of the treeline, the houses, the wary welcome. The three-path direction set at Ch 2 travels with the child unweighted.
Continuity. Internal age 9 (advanced across Ch 2's time-fluctuation span), Childhood; Shell encountered but not yet bonded (she bonds at Ch 3); no companion travels along.
Ch 3 to Ch 4 — Manggarai highlands to Bali (down to the coast, then by sea)
Departure. Carried down out of the Manggarai highlands toward the coast, the child departs Flores by sea toward Bali, the architecture-and-unity weaving crossing; Mama Klara stays behind and no continuous companion departs alongside [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_03].
Passage. Down to the coast on foot, then a coastal sea crossing westward from Flores to Bali — the range's first water leg [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Arrival. Landfall on Bali and up onto Besakih, the mother-temple high on Gunung Agung's flank, then down into the villages below [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_04].
Transition sequence. A first sea-crossing sequence that opens the island-world beyond Flores; Shell, now bonded, travels the water alongside for the first time as the chosen-bond companion.
Continuity. Internal age 9, Childhood; Shell bonded (first chosen bond); concealment now strategic (Active Concealment); the healer's-child watching-mystery carried as unease; no human companion travels on.
Ch 4 to Ch 5 — Bali to Sumatra and Java (by ship)
Departure. Past the Uluwatu sea-cliff temple and out across the water by ship under Ship Captain I Wayan Dwija, sailing toward Sumatra and Java [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_04].
Passage. A captained sea voyage west and north through the archipelago to Java's monument-country, coming in by river and road; continuous ground-and-water travel, no flight [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Arrival. Into Central Java, ascending Borobudur, then down to the Palembang river-port on Sumatra [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_05].
Transition sequence. A captained-voyage sequence across open archipelago water; Kira the Bali Starling, bonded at Ch 4, rides the passage as the roster begins to accumulate.
Continuity. Internal age 9 rising to 10 across Ch 5, Childhood; Shell and Kira present; concealment turning outward into reading others.
Ch 5 to Ch 6 — Sumatra and Java to Sri Lanka (the thalassocratic leg, with the Angkor and Champa excursion)
Departure. After riding the anchor's own thalassocratic network north — up the Malacca Strait, portaging the Kra Isthmus, crossing the Gulf of Thailand, inland up the Tonle Sap to Angkor with a My Son and Champa touch, then doubling the whole route back down to the sea — the protagonist departs across the Bay of Bengal; the Khmer and Cham hosts are one-chapter figures left behind [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Passage. The longest and most compound water-and-portage leg of the early arc, the mainland excursion folded into it and doubled back, resolving into the open Bay of Bengal crossing to the island [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Arrival. Ashore on Sri Lanka, the island older than any empire crossed, and inland into the sacred plain to Anuradhapura [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_06].
Transition sequence. A long-haul sea sequence that reads the accumulated distance of the whole SE-Asian network, the excursion's inland reach visible as a remembered detour rather than an onward turn; Khan the Sumatran Tiger, bonded at Ch 5, travels on.
Continuity. Internal age 10, Childhood; Shell, Kira, Khan present; concealment Active; the first family-briefed recognizer's unease (Datu Siahaan) carried forward as an unexplained exposure vector, never a named pattern.
Ch 6 to Ch 7 — Sri Lanka to South India (across the strait, by ship)
Departure. Coming down off Adam's Peak and turning for the sea after the true-from-false discernment, the protagonist takes ship across the strait; a young elephant of the tank-country, now bonded, walks a little way alongside before they embark; the Vedda elder and the edura stay behind [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_06].
Passage. A short strait crossing by ship from Sri Lanka to the South-Indian coast [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Arrival. Up out of the Tamil country into Madurai, the ringed Meenakshi temple-city [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_07].
Transition sequence. A brief strait-crossing sequence, the near shore visible from the far one; Muthu the elephant, bonded at Ch 6, is the newest of the roster, and the crossing carries the child toward her first rootedness in the mortal world.
Continuity. Internal age 10, Childhood; Shell, Kira, Khan, Muthu present; concealment Active.
Ch 7 to Ch 8 — South India to the Swahili Coast (the monsoon crossing, first open water since Flores)
Departure. From the temple-city and the Western-Ghats coast, the protagonist departs alone by the monsoon coast road and out onto the sea, carrying the sealed fairy-realm-script letter entrusted by Guruji Achuthan still unread; Raghavendra stays rooted to South India [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_07].
Passage. The monsoon Indian-Ocean crossing — the widest open water yet and the first passage to a new continent — apprenticed on the way to the dhow captain Nakhoda Binti Hassan, who becomes the Trade-10 home-base navigator [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Arrival. Landfall at the coral-stone island city of Kilwa Kisiwani on the Swahili Coast of East Africa [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_08].
Transition sequence. A long open-ocean sequence that reads as a genuine threshold — the widest water yet, the sealed letter riding unread in the pack, the apprenticeship at the tiller. This is the seam where the two arc-defining objects (the letter) and states (the coming first hostile recognition) come into position; the crossing carries the trade home bases just rooted at South India (Blacksmithing, Herbalism) as the first returnable rootedness.
Continuity. Internal age 10 rising to 11 across Ch 8, Childhood; the roster carried; concealment Active on departure, about to become Concealment-with-Hostile-Recognition at Kilwa.
Ch 8 to Ch 9 — the Swahili Coast to the Ethiopian highlands (north by sea, following the Sealed Letter)
Departure. North by sea following the Sealed Letter's Aksumite pointer — the letter now read at Kilwa, its script identified and its northward direction set — with Nakhoda Binti Hassan recurring across the crossing if her ally status holds [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_08].
Passage. A coastal and Red-Sea sea voyage north from the Swahili Coast toward the Horn, then climbing on foot up into the highlands [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Arrival. Up out of the sea crossing into the coffee-slopes and highland mountains, first taken in at a highland house, then down into the old stele-city of the Aksumite highlands [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_09].
Transition sequence. A directed voyage-and-ascent sequence: the first passage the protagonist steers toward a destination the letter chose, rather than merely onward. Reveal-disciplined — the letter shows only that the crossing was not unique, its full content held to Ch 38, and the hostile recognition just met at Kilwa travels forward as unease with no family or pattern named.
Continuity. Internal age 11, Childhood; Kasa and Msafiri newly bonded at Ch 8 join the roster; Trade 10 home rooted; identity now Concealment-with-Hostile-Recognition, carried forward.
Ch 9 to Ch 10 — the Ethiopian highlands to the East African Rift Valley (on foot, guided south)
Departure. South out of the Simien highlands on foot, guided by the pastoralist Tesfa with Desta the Ethiopian wolf at their heel — the first named guide to bridge the protagonist between chapters [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_09].
Passage. An overland descent south from the highlands into the Rift, walking down into Olduvai Gorge and its deep-time strata [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Arrival. Down on foot into Olduvai Gorge, descending through deep time via the valley's time-fluctuation current [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_10].
Transition sequence. A guided overland-descent sequence, Tesfa bridging the way and Desta guiding the highland-to-valley transitions; the wolf bonds across this very seam, so the passage itself is where the roster gains its next familiar.
Continuity. Internal age 11 rising to 12 across Ch 10, Childhood; Desta bonding across Ch 9 to Ch 10; Tesfa is a guide, not a continuing companion.
Ch 10 to Ch 11 — the Rift Valley to the Congo Basin (overland, following the rivers)
Departure. The protagonist climbs back out of the Rift Valley and travels onward overland, carrying the oldest rock-art marks southward as a thread pointing toward the later Drakensberg; the San teachers and Maasai bridges stay rooted to the Rift [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_10].
Passage. On foot, following the rivers west and north out of the Rift (from the Olduvai country up across the equator toward the closed basin) until the equatorial canopy shuts over into the Ituri Forest interior [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Arrival. Into the Ituri Forest interior of the Congo Basin, the canopy closing overhead [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_11].
Transition sequence. A river-following forest-entry sequence, the open Rift giving way to closed canopy; no human companion travels along, and the arrival note is that the forest itself will come to recognize the protagonist through its living field.
Continuity. Internal age 12, Childhood; the roster carried; identity-state persists though this is a respite with no hostile recognizer.
Ch 11 to Ch 12 — the Congo Basin to West Africa (west, out of the forest)
Departure. West out of the Congo forest toward the West-African coast, the Iroko axis-mundi lineage pointing the way; the Baka and Mbuti teachers stay rooted to the forest, which lets the protagonist pass as its own [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_11].
Passage. An overland leg west and toward the coast, out of the closed canopy into the Yoruba city-belt [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Arrival. On foot into Ile-Ife, the bronze-casting city of the Yoruba city-belt [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_12].
Transition sequence. A forest-to-city-belt sequence, the wild interior opening into a great classical urban civilization; the honey-guide partnership seeded in the forest travels forward toward the Animal-Communication home the protagonist is about to root.
Continuity. Internal age 12 rising to 13 across Ch 12, Childhood; the healer's child still the unsigned watcher (formal join at Ch 13); Trade 1 Animal Communication about to root at Ouidah.
Ch 12 to Ch 13 — West Africa to South Africa (south, down the length of the continent)
Departure. South out of West Africa toward the South-African veld, the Unity weaving pointing the way and the deepening unnumbered foreshadowing with it; the West-African teachers and the Dahomey court stay rooted, while the healer's child continues as the unsigned watcher along the road [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_12].
Passage. The long overland descent down the length of the African continent to its southern end [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Arrival. Into South Africa, reaching the Drakensberg-uKhahlamba amphitheatre to read its painted rock-art shelters [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_13].
Transition sequence. A continent-spanning descent sequence that closes the found-family's central turn: on this road the healer's child stops being a silent watcher and formally joins as the primary traveling companion and journal-keeper, the evidence-journal about to go live. Trade 1 Animal Communication, rooted at Ouidah, is carried as the newest returnable home.
Continuity. Internal age 13, Childhood (the last Childhood chapter); the healer's child now the active traveling companion; identity-state persists with no aware recognizer at Ch 13.
Ch 13 to Ch 14 — South Africa to Nubia and Kush (the interior traverse; Childhood to Adolescence)
Departure. After breaking the Drakensberg mine and its superintendent, the protagonist departs northward on the interior traverse — the ratified Ch 13-to-Ch 14 spread leg through Great Zimbabwe's dry-stone, the Zambezi, and the Swahili-coast hinterland, closing the Ch 8 African-interior gold-trade loop — with combat on the leg routed only through a corrupt institution, never the protected peoples [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_13].
Passage. A long interior overland traverse up the spine of the continent and up the Nile corridor into the sovereign kingdom of Kush; the Trade 2 Mining substrate deepens at the Witwatersrand and Kimberley workings along the way [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Arrival. The newly-adolescent protagonist comes up the Nile into Kush, arriving at Meroe in the middle-Nile corridor [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_14].
Transition sequence. The single stage-transition seam of the range: the Childhood-to-Adolescence crossing lands on this traverse, the internal age advancing across the leg (designer-only, never surfaced) so the child who left the Drakensberg arrives at Meroe an early adolescent, set up to meet Kush as a civilizational peer. The healer's child travels with her, the journal now live and accumulating; Msafiri ranges on from the African inland into the Nile corridor.
Continuity. Internal age 13 rising to 14 across Ch 14, crossing from Childhood to Adolescence; the healer's child the active companion; the gold-trade loop back to Ch 8 closed on the leg.
Ch 14 to Ch 15 — Kush and Meroe to Egypt (down the Nile)
Departure. Down off Gebel Barkal, the pure mountain, the journal fuller than when she climbed it and the Trade 9 Philosophus Portal-Grade ceremony completed there — the wisdom-test that gates the Ch 15 Adeptus-Minor initiation — the protagonist travels down the Nile corridor northward [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_14].
Passage. Riverine travel down the Nile corridor from Kush into Lower Nubia and Egypt [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Arrival. Onto the Giza plateau, standing in the shadow of the Great Pyramid to read its slope as a peer statement, before the temples at Karnak and the Serapeum [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_15].
Transition sequence. A river-descent sequence framed as an approach between peers — Kush to Egypt as sovereign to sovereign, not periphery to center — the Portal-Grade threshold passed behind her and the Adeptus-Minor crossing waiting ahead. The healer's child travels on as companion and journal-keeper.
Continuity. Internal age 14, Adolescence; the tier-5 Portal-Grade gate passed; the Trade 9 Inscription home about to root at Egypt.
Ch 15 to Ch 16 — Egypt to the Indus (by sea across the Arabian Sea)
Departure.
