CANON SUBORDINATION — this document is PROPOSAL-TIER: it serves canon and never outranks it.
The canon: the CVD · the T1 foundation docs · the T0 registries (registries/) · the spine
(docs/spine/CH_*.md) · the region pages (_source/02_Tier_2_Region_Pages/). Authority order:docs/DOC_MAP.md§ 0.

READ THAT CANON FIRST — open it and derive from it before you build anything from this document.
If this document disagrees with canon, CANON WINS and this document is the defect — fix the
document, never the canon. Nothing here is applied until it is ratified into canon.
STATUS: PROPOSAL-TIER design sheet, written to docs/proposals/bestiary/BESTIARY_ELEVATION_DOCTRINE.md
and critic-gated against its ten refusal tests. It cites canon rows and writes none. It is the
counterweight sheet to CR_0164_pangulubalang.md: the same technique, the other hand.

THE ONE THING THIS SHEET IS BUILT AROUND. Canon refuses a good-idol and bad-idol pair in as many
words: "the same technique makes a village's protective figure and a corrupt datu's weapon, and what
differs is the hand and the purpose" (sumatra_java.md:1267-1269). So this sheet designs ONE object
class with TWO placements, and the player's whole skill with it is telling which is which by looking.
The legitimate village wards are allied set dressing and are never targets (sumatra_java.md:1269-1270),
and that line is a design constraint the sheet builds around rather than a caveat appended to it.
No animal base and no human base. Register CONSTRUCT: a sculpted anthropomorphic wooden figure with a
chest cavity holding pupuk, animated by a begu the ritual specialist entices into the statue and
brings under control [SRC_00446, print p. 59; sumatra_java.md:947-949]. Only a spirit-inhabited
figure was held to work, which is the single most important fact in this block: the class contains
inert members and working members, and the difference is inside the chest.
THE SKELETON DECLARED IN THIS BLOCK IS THE VILLAGE MEMBER'S, AND ONLY THE VILLAGE MEMBER'S. The
man-high compound body is a different armature with a different member count, and it is declared once,
on CR_0164_pangulubalang.md § 2 — five members and four cord lashings including the base-block
lashing — and referenced here rather than restated, so the two sheets cannot drift into two joint
rosters for one object.
stand at doorposts, granary doors and thresholds inside the built fabric (sumatra_java.md:1479-1487).
The compound members are the ones a pangulubalang wears and are man-high; their armature is
CR_0164's and this sheet re-decides none of it.
the cavity, and, on the working members, cord lashings at the two shoulders and at the neck — three
lashings, three members plus the standing foot. The inert members have no lashings at all, and that
is visible from across a street.
discipline CR_0164 declares at compound scale. The inert members' declared ROM is zero at every
point, because an inert member is a carving and a carving does not move.
the sides or across the chest, head level. The class's identity is that it stands like a person
waiting rather than like a statue posing.
THE ANATOMY REFERENCE TABLE, READ AND STATED AFFIRMATIVELY. build/3d/schema/anatomy_reference/ is on
disk and supersedes the doctrine § 2.1 inline licence where a bucket covers a subject. NO BUCKET
COVERS THIS SUBJECT, and the table says so itself: its declared scope is the eight bucketed census
archetypes plus HUMANOID, with the PROVISIONAL folklore rows explicitly OUT OF SCOPE because "body
plan is a canon decision, already boarded as a canon debt"
(build/3d/schema/anatomy_reference/index.json, scope and out_of_scope). This subject is a
carved object rather than a body — it has no vertebrae, no clavicle and no gait cycle — so HUMANOID's
clinical goniometry is not the right ruler either. The inline skeleton block above therefore stands,
and the table's arrival supersedes nothing here.
THE MECHANISM, stated. Nothing here glows and nothing floats. A working member is a figure with mass
in a cavity that an empty one lacks, so it stands a fraction differently, its foot bites the ground
harder, and it has picked up the grime and the offerings of being attended. Vril alters real physics
rather than suspending it: the difference between a working ward and a piece of wood is measurable in
how the thing sits on the earth, and the design puts the whole read there.
a begu the specialist entices into the statue and brings under control; only a spirit-inhabited
figure was held to work, and many of their individual names begin with pagar, protective [SRC_00446,

player who has learned the script can read what a stranger's amulet was made against
[sumatra_java.md:1233-1236]. That is the region's own investigation surface and this sheet routes
the figure's carved name into it.
ONE-LINE SILHOUETTE READ: a small carved person standing at a doorpost with a hole where a heart
goes, and you can see from the street whether the hole is full.
PRIMARY — A10 NEGATIVE SPACE. The class's identity is an absence and canon supplied it: the chest
cavity. The design makes the cavity a real void with a fitted cover that sits proud of the chest and
casts its own shadow, so at any distance the figure reads as filled, empty, opened, or worked. Four
states, one glance, no HUD:
and the figure stands a little lighter on its foot.
lined with: figures a man PREPARED and never fed. It is evidence of method and of appetite rather
than of power, it is the state the player learns to read as a warning, and nothing in it is animate.
gives the corrupt datu exactly one captive (sumatra_java.md:987-989, 3258-3262), and multiplying that
captive into a courtyard of them would multiply the crime the whole encounter is built to weigh.
SUPPORTING — A9 THE MARK: THE CARVED NAME. Each figure is individually named and many of those names
begin with pagar, protective, which the record attests. The design puts the name on the figure where
a player who has learned Surat Batak can read it, and then does the thing the region page already
invites: the ward tells you what it was made against. The village figures are named against sickness,
against theft, against the rot in a granary. The compound's figures are named against PEOPLE. Nothing
in that sentence is a monster design, and it is the most frightening thing on this sheet.
SUPPORTING — A5 AGE AND STATE. A ward that is kept looks kept: rice grains at the foot, smoke-dark on
the upper surfaces, a shine on the head where hands have passed, cloth renewed. A ward that has been
taken up for the other purpose looks fed instead of attended — the stain at the cavity rim rather
than the polish on the crown. This axis costs no light, and it is what lets a player read a
household's standing and a compound's intent off the same object class.
EMISSION: none anywhere. Ward-fires, hearths, the compound's lamps and daylight in the village
street.
this sheet makes to the documented form. It attaches at the torso, it has no joint of its own, and
the cover swings on a single carved pin with about 100 degrees of travel.
degrees with no twist, and weight passes down the loaded side into the standing foot under the same
cord discipline CR_0164 declares at compound scale — because it is the same craft, which is canon's
whole point. The compound body's own roster of five members and four lashings stays on CR_0164 § 2
and is not restated here.
than an omission, because a lane that rigs the village figures has quietly made a street full of
protected wards into potential enemies.
the one element the art lane must keep readable at the shipped exploration camera.
TWO PLACEMENTS, TWO GRAMMARS, AND ONLY ONE OF THEM IS HOSTILE.
THE VILLAGE PLACEMENT — THE GUARDIAN TEST, and this is the PROTECTED staging presumption discharged
exactly as the doctrine's part five words it: a sacred or ambivalent being faced as a guardian test
rather than as prey. The player walks Boru Simanjuntak's warded thresholds at her side through the
night (CH_05.md:142-145), and the wards are what is doing the reading. Part economy home, declared:
NONE — nothing here breaks, and the sheet says so affirmatively rather than leaving the block thin.
| tell shape | body origin | one answer | counter class |
|---|---|---|---|
| a threshold ward stands with its cavity covered and its foot dressed | the figure is filled, kept and working | this threshold holds — place the pagar and move on | the ward lane |
| a ward's cover has been lifted and set back crooked | the figure has been opened by a hand that was not the household's | re-seat it and re-read the whole row of houses from that one | the puzzle lane |
| a ward's name reads against a danger that is not this house's | the carved name on the flank | this figure was moved here, and the household needs telling | the read lane |
| a ward stands lighter, cavity dark through the silhouette | the figure is empty | this threshold is open, and the night's pressure arrives here first | positioning |
THE CHAIN IS A NIGHT, NOT A HEALTH BAR. The thresholds are read in sequence with a wiping chain, and
a mis-read is not a hit taken — it is a house the killing-spirit reaches. That is a harder encounter
than a fight, which is the defang tell answered in the terms the doctrine sets: bold register with
timid staging is the same failure as timid register, so this trial is timed, it is long, and it can be
lost house by house.
THE COMPOUND PLACEMENT — ONE HOSTILE INSTANCE, AND A LINE OF EVIDENCE. At the corrupt datu's compound
the approach is lined with the same object class the player has spent a night defending, and every one
of those lined figures stands OPENED AND EMPTY — covers set aside, cavities waiting, nothing in them
and nothing animate about them. They are what a man prepared, and they are read rather than fought.
Exactly one figure on that ground is WORKED, and it is the man-high body a pangulubalang wears at
CH05_B11; its entire fight grammar lives on CR_0164_pangulubalang.md § 6 and is not re-decided here.
Part economy home for that one instance: BODY, and it is CR_0164's lashings and cover. The lined
figures have no part economy at all, because a prepared and unfed carving is furniture.
WHY THE COUNT IS ONE, STATED SO A LATER LANE CANNOT DRIFT IT. Canon gives the corrupt datu one
jar-bound captive and stages the resolution as freeing that captive (sumatra_java.md:987-989,
1259-1262, 3258-3266). A courtyard of worked figures would silently multiply a documented human death
into a set-piece body count, which inverts the care register the whole encounter rests on. The dread on
that approach is therefore carried by the EMPTY ones — a man who made room for more — which is more
frightening than a crowd and costs nothing.
RELOCATION AND TURF: the village figures never move and never leave their thresholds, which is what
makes them a map the player can learn. The one worked compound figure is the only member of the class
with a gait, and the class boundary is exactly the compound wall.
it: legitimate village wards are allied set dressing and are never targets, ordinary villagers'
houses stay inert and protected, and the hostility is walled to one corrupt individual's compound.
No ordinary household, no accused villager, and no figure standing at a village doorpost is ever
offered as a target, and the design makes that structural — the village members carry no rig.
Gogo worked read is the model and it is followed here: an AMBIVALENT being keeps its menacing edge,
and the sheet that renders it harmless has failed the row and protected nobody. The edge on this row
is not a snarl — it is that the same craft, the same cavity and the same substance that keep a
household safe are what one man used to make a weapon, and that the player cannot tell them apart
until they learn to read. Canon refuses the benign-versus-malign pair and so does this sheet.
object class and never routes through raw generation. No real devotional object and no catalogued
museum piece is reproduced as an asset: the figures are the game's own carvings built to the
documented FORM and structural logic, per the page's standing era discipline that the 1200 CE build
inherits the form and the logic and never a dated object or a dated ornament programme
(sumatra_java.md:1491-1494).
a statue and brought under control, which a careless lane would render as possession horror. The aim
is moved instead of the content removed: the game's hostile instance is a figure a NAMED CORRUPT MAN
opened and fed, the player meets it at his address alone, and every other member of the class in the
chapter is a household's own keeping. Nothing was cut, including the pupuk, the cavity and the
enticement.
altogether and shipping the class as pure set dressing was considered, on the grounds that PROTECTED
plus a village context reads as hands-off. Refused — canon itself stages sculpted figures fed pupuk
for aggression at that one compound, the class's own invisible half is the chapter's supernatural
escalation, and a sheet that made the whole class inert would have deleted the one substrate, two
directions frame that is the row's entire meaning. Toward over-boldness: rigging the village figures
so that any of them can rouse, and giving the player a way to open a household's ward for its pupuk,
were both considered and refused — the first would put a protected community's wards into the enemy
pool by accident, the second would make looting a household's protection a mechanic.
fitted cover and its 100-degree pin, the kept-versus-fed material states, the placement of the carved
name where a literate player can read what a figure was made against, the four village tell shapes,
the night-chain trial, the zero-rig rule for village members, AND THE LINED COMPOUND APPROACH — a row
of opened-and-empty figures prepared and never fed, with exactly one worked figure among them — are
INVENTED BY THIS SHEET as the game's own design and are named as ours. The lined approach is the
sheet's own staging: canon places roused house-guardians and a jar-bound captive at that compound
and says nothing about a row of prepared figures, so the row is ours, the count of one worked figure
is canon's, and the two are labelled apart here on purpose. The figures themselves, the chest cavity holding pupuk, the
enticed-and-controlled begu, the only-a-spirit-inhabited-figure-works rule, the individual naming and
the pagar names, the visible-versus-invisible relation to the pangulubalang, the one-substrate frame,
the pupuk-animates-for-protection-or-aggression rule, and the never-targets status are CITED.

the compound's are local and personal, which is the chapter's ruled surface motive.
