THE PROBLEM THIS SHEET EXISTS TO SOLVE, STATED BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE. This is the chapter's only

insect with a live permission on it, and the doctrine's agency test fails on exactly the thing Josh

named: "hacking a defenseless creature". A three-centimetre beetle that a player walks up to and

picks up is that failure in its purest form, and no amount of anatomy fixes it. The temptation on

the other side is to make the beetle big, and making it big is the Komodo defect run backwards — an

elevation invented to manufacture a fight, on a row whose folklore columns are empty and whose

chapter reserves stylization for the //gauwasi alone [CH_10.md:223]. THE ANSWER THIS SHEET BUILDS IS

NEITHER. The encounter is not the beetle: **it is the BALL, and the several animals that all want

it.** The player is one competitor in a contest that is already running, against an animal that is

faster at it than they are, on a clock that ends when the ball goes underground. That is a real

encounter at true scale with real agency on the creature's side, and § 6 is its whole content.

2. base_species

insect_winged for the body and wings, MULTI_LEGGED / hexapod_insect** for the legs and gait

is the table's own instruction rather than this sheet's convenience. `WINGED.json §

sub_plans.insect_winged` names this row BY CENSUS ID — "CR_0072 Sacred scarab" sits in its census

list [ANATOMY_REFERENCE.md:458] — and that sub-plan's own gait note reads "walk: see MULTI_LEGGED

— the same six legs and the same tripod" [:483]. The doctrine's amended § 2.1 rules that a row in a

bucket's census list derives from that bucket and cites the path; an inline skeleton block here

would be a defect.

ELYTRA THAT OPEN AND DO NOT FLAP; wing_bones 0; articulation by the wing-base sclerite complex —

per wing purely to carry the beat and the torsional twist, six legs on the MULTI_LEGGED plan, an

abdomen chain of three to five segments, antennae of two to three each [§ Bone roster]

of two to five tarsomeres, pretarsus with paired claws and often an adhesive arolium; two antennae,

"each a multi-segment chain that MOVES CONSTANTLY; still antennae are the fastest way to make an

insect look dead" [§ segments]

multi-axis joint, promotion-remotion ±45 and rotation ±30; coxa-trochanter is a single-axis hinge,

levation-depression -40 to +50; trochanter-femur is functionally immobile at ±10 — "a bone in the

roster, not a control"; **femur-tibia is a DICONDYLIC HINGE, 0 to 160 degrees, single axis,

structurally incapable of a second — "a rig that lets an insect knee twist or splay is producing

motion the exoskeleton physically forbids. This is the exemplar Josh named"**; tibia-tarsus hinge

-60 to +30; the tarsomere chain is a passive chain on one long tendon at -30 to +5 per joint and

ANIMATES AS ONE CURL PARAMETER, never independently. WINGS AND ABDOMEN [WINGED § joints]: wing

base sclerite linkage, a click mechanism rather than a socket, stroke amplitude 90-180,

pronation-supination ±60, deviation ±30, with the wing FLIPPING at each stroke reversal because

that flip is where most of the lift comes from; abdominal intersegmental telescoping membrane,

dorsoventral ±15 and lateral ±10, and "the abdomen pumps for respiration ... it is not a rigid

blob".

*Scarabaeus sacer* HAS NO PROTARSI: the forelegs end at a broad toothed tibia and the tarsal chain

and pretarsal claws are ABSENT on the front pair, which is the genus's defining limb morphology and

the direct mechanical reason the animal walks on its front elbows and pushes with its hind legs.

The bucket declares a tarsus and a pretarsus on all six. This is a per-row correction stated

affirmatively rather than a silent override; § 9 boards it for the bucket lane. Everything else in

the roster is the table's unchanged, including the middle and hind legs' full chains, which carry

the ball.

duty factor 0.4-0.55 with a 0.5 phase offset; slow is the METACHRONAL WAVE, back-to-front down each

side with the two sides half a cycle out of phase, at duty factor 0.6-0.8, and the tripod EMERGES

from it as speed rises. The solver is "one phase clock, a per-leg phase offset, and IK to a stepping

target". THE GAIT THIS ANIMAL SPENDS MOST OF ITS SCREEN TIME IN IS NEITHER, and it is inline

AUTHORIAL_ANATOMY because the bucket publishes no such mode: the BACKWARD ROLL, in which the

forelegs and head are planted on the ground, the body is inverted head-down, and the middle and

hind legs walk the ball above and behind. Four contacts, two on soil and two on a sphere, with the

phase clock driven off the ball's rotation rather than off the ground.

binds — above roughly 60 Hz "stop keyframing and start blurring", with the animation budget going

to the body path instead. The beetle_note is the animation beat this sheet spends: "elytra open

first, hindwings unfold from beneath them; the unfold is a two-stage mechanism and a real animation

beat".

three bones each; MULTI_LEGGED / hexapod_insect minimum 44 deform bones with six leg chains of at

least five bones each and every joint below the coxa single-axis; bilateral symmetry required on

both. THE HIGHER FLOOR GOVERNS: 44.

broad semicircular head shield carrying a rake of six forward-projecting teeth, which is this

animal's tool and its finder at close range; the toothed foretibiae that pair with it; the

pronotum's fit against the elytral shoulders; a matte, unpolished black cuticle with no iridescence

and no metallic sheen, which matters because a lane reaching for "scarab" will reach for a jewel

beetle and this species is not one; and the mass and scale band, roughly three centimetres and a

few grams, against a ball that runs to fifty grams and several times the animal's own volume.

the body is a wedge built to go under things and a lever built to move something bigger than

itself.

limbs, sitting flat on soil. In the roll it is not that shape at all — it is a sphere with four

legs on top of it and a wedge underneath, and the two silhouettes share nothing.

3. lore_source

THE RECORD.** cultural_significance reads "Khepri-sacred (Ch 15 Egypt); dung-beetle solar imagery;

cross-cultural sacred"; rare_variant reads "leucistic scarab morph (Ch 15)"; notes reads

"completionist-tier variant target at Ch 15"; and chapters_present reads CH_10;CH_15. Three cells

and the chapter list all point the same way. T3_Creatures_Tameable § 5 Ch 10 files the species

under "Pollinator and decomposer" and says the same thing in its own words — "dung beetles (sacred

cross-cultural across multiple African traditions; anticipates Ch 15 Egyptian scarab Khepri canon)"

[:469]. **ANTICIPATES. THE RULING: the CH_10 sheet builds what CH_10 stages — a decomposer of the

savanna floor — and the Khepri register, the solar iconography and the leucistic completionist

variant are DEFERRED BY NAME to the Ch-15 lane, which owns them.** This is the crocodile precedent:

a species whose sacred register belongs to a later chapter is built here as the animal and there as

the tradition.

canon holds mundane. The moment a row gains a folklore cell, a staged supernatural claim, or a boss

row, the sheet re-derives under the full grammar." folklore_behavior_substrate and

folklore_attribution_source are EMPTY on this row TODAY. The Ch-15 sheet is where that changes,

and this sheet says so rather than leaving a successor to discover it.

//Gwi or Ju|'hoansi tradition is asked here to supply a beetle figure it does not hold. The region

page's own scan condition is the reason: "There is no Hadza ethnography, no Sandawe ethnography, and

no Rift pastoralist ethnography in this corpus" [rift_valley.md:280-287], and its naming

discipline is absolute — "no unattested local word enters living-tradition substrate, and a thing is

carried descriptively until a source attests a term for it" [:334-344]. NO BEETLE WORD IN ANY

LANGUAGE OF THIS VALLEY APPEARS ANYWHERE ON THIS SHEET.

runs on a BEETLE LARVA — "//Kushe's Diamphidia-beetle-larva arrow-poison" [CH_10.md:52] — and the

region page reports that the corpus attests none of it: "Diamphidia returns zero and the hyphenated

arrow-poison returns zero" [rift_valley.md:212-223]. *Diamphidia* is a leaf beetle and is not this

row. NOTHING ON THIS SHEET TOUCHES THE PHARMACOPOEIA, and the two beetles are held apart

deliberately, exactly as the region page holds the /Xam ggauwa OCR artifact apart from the Ju|'hoan

//gauwasi [:481-487].

and iron-oxide pigment is "the region's canonical resource and the one that travels"

[rift_valley.md:601-605], and the pigment lane's "honest consumer is Trade 9 Inscription"

[:855-862]. § 6's material read is written against that lane and declares its own addition to it.

Ju|'hoansi (!Kung) tracker (CHAR_0074) ... who reads the deep-valley terrain, a teaching NPC"

[CH_10.md:185], with "Debe's tracking taught here" at the camp [CH_10.md:83]. **THIS SHEET ATTACHES

NO TECHNIQUE TO HIM OR TO HIS PEOPLE.** The dung-clock mechanic in § 6 is declared INVENTED as the

game's own, and the citation exists only to record that the chapter already has a tracking lane the

mechanic would sit beside — not to imply that any San or Hadza practice is being represented.

[rift_valley.md:245-252]. Every behavioural line in § 4 and § 6 is therefore AUTHORIAL_ANATOMY —

general entomological knowledge carried as DESIGN, never as a claim of a source this region holds.

and it carries nothing about any animal [rift_valley.md:944-951]. The machinery matches; it

reaches no insect.

contest clock, the dung-clock tracking read, the elytra-plate material, and the guild legibility

contract at the pat.

4. elevation

because the row's folklore columns are empty, no supernatural claim is staged on it at CH_10, and

the chapter's asset anchor reserves stylization for one being — "mythologically-stylized only for

the //gauwasi sickness-shadow" [CH_10.md:223]. The row's own mesh_tags.style reads

realistic-ethnographic.

line on this sheet.** A1 exists and TRUE_SCALE is its lowest band, but on this row the band is not

a choice about size — it is the refusal of the obvious wrong move. The chapter's only combat-facing

insect invites a scale band the way the Komodo row invited a documentary photograph, and both are

the same failure: a design decision made because the pipeline could not think of anything else. The

interest is at three centimetres and § 6 proves it.

THE LEGIBILITY CONTRACT

The confusable set here is not other chapters' animals. It is the guild at the pat — because a

fresh dung pat on this floor carries dozens of beetles of many kinds within minutes, and the player

has to find THIS one, plus the chapter's other insect row.

ROLLER. It cuts a portion, moulds it into a sphere, and takes it AWAY from the pat in a dead

straight line. Nothing else at that pat is a moving sphere. At any range at which a

three-centimetre insect is invisible, a fifty-gram dark ball travelling across open pale ground

under its own power is not — and the straight line is what makes it read as an intention rather

than as debris rolling downhill.

UNDER the pat and takes its portion vertically. It never leaves and it never carries. At the pat

the two are separated by one question — does anything leave? — and the answer is visible from

standing height.

They are density and they read as texture.

[@ CR_0071, trophic_role pollinator, notes "group-level"]: that cohort is AIR and it is

ATTACHED TO FLOWERING TREES; this row is GROUND and it is attached to the open floor. Different

volume, different anchor, no overlap. The cohort is also a cohort and this is a species, and the

CR_0009 sheet's own rule holds here — a cohort is read as density and sound, an individual is read

as a body [CR_0009_endemic_insect_cohort.md:38].

is a broad semicircular shield with a fan of six forward-pointing teeth — a shovel with a scalloped

edge, and the only shape on the animal that is not a smooth curve. At the camera distance this

encounter actually plays at, the head reads as a fan.

roller and one thief until the contact happens, because both are a beetle beside a ball. THE

RESOLVER is who is UNDER it: the owner works from below and behind with its head down, and the

thief comes over the top. Above the ball is always the wrong beetle.

beetle on bare soil with the legs tucked has no finder in frame at all and reads as a stone. THE

DESIGN RULE, and it is the bucket's own: THE ANTENNAE NEVER STOP MOVING [MULTI_LEGGED §

rig_rules]. A beetle whose antennae are still is a dead beetle, and this species is never staged

dead-still except when it is actually dead.

THE STATE LADDER — A5 age and state

The states a species-typical photograph does not contain (AUTHORIAL_ANATOMY throughout):

irregular, straight off the pat; the MOULDED sphere, smooth and dark and wet; the CRUSTED ball, dry

and pale and dusted with the soil it has rolled through, which is what a ball that has travelled

looks like; and the BROOD PEAR, buried and out of the world. A player can date the encounter by

which one is in frame.

spawn: a SECOND BEETLE riding on top of the moulded ball while the first rolls it. Two animals, one

object, one on top — an instantly legible relationship with no UI and no text. **THE PAIR IS

DELIBERATELY UNSEXED AND THE EARLIER "larger female" READING IS WITHDRAWN:** *Scarabaeus sacer*

sexes are close enough in size that a size-keyed sex read would not survive the camera, and an

unsexed rider is cleaner design as well as safer zoology — it also keeps the pair state visually

distinct from THE HIJACK in § 6, where the second animal is a rival rather than a passenger, on the

one fact that matters: the rider is CARRIED and the hijacker is BRACED.

has a worn shield edge; the elytra carry fine scoring from soil; and a pale abraded patch sits on

the vertex and the foretibiae where the animal has pushed against ground for a season.

dust, and the soda shallows at their most saturated" [rift_valley.md:25], so the ordinary state is

a crusted ball in dust. The first rain is the population state change — the pat holds, the guild

arrives in numbers, and the same square metre goes from three animals to forty.

bucket records WHY a curl-on-death is a mechanism rather than a stylistic choice in the NOTE ON THE

FEMUR-PATELLA JOINT ENTRY, where the reason is stated — "when a spider dies or is anaesthetised,

pressure drops and ALL the legs curl inward. The death pose is not a stylistic choice; it is the

mechanism failing" [MULTI_LEGGED.json § sub_plans.arachnid_octopod.joints femur-patella note; the

same fact is restated as a one-line gait.death_pose key]. THE MECHANISM IS ARACHNID AND IS NOT

THIS ANIMAL'S — an insect leg extends muscularly and does not depend on hemolymph pressure — so what

this row takes from the bucket is the DISCIPLINE (a death pose is derived from a mechanism), and the

beetle's own curl is post-mortem muscle tone declared inline as AUTHORIAL_ANATOMY. A dead scarab is

a stone with legs folded under it, and it must not be animated as a spider's collapse.

PRIMARY — A9 THE MARK, spent as THE CARRIED OBJECT. The doctrine's own vocabulary licenses this

directly and it does so in the doctrine's founding statement of what elevation IS: "It is BUILT

differently, it is MADE of something, it is SCARRED by where it has been, it CARRIES what it does"

[BESTIARY_ELEVATION_DOCTRINE.md:83, § 1.3]. A9 asks for one high-contrast, instantly readable

identifying feature, and the ball IS that feature. **A6 IS A SEPARATE AND NARROWER THING and is not

what is being spent here:** its own clause reads "the MATERIAL its body carries (wet, rimed,

ash-crusted, iron-scaled, salt-bloomed)" [§ 2.3 A6] — a surface state ON the body, not an object

beside it — and this sheet spends no A6 at all. MECHANISM, and it is real and it costs the animal

everything: this species has no store, no nest and no territory — it has one object, it is taking it

somewhere, and it cannot defend it and move it at the same time. Every tell in § 6 falls out of that

single fact.

SUPPORTING — A5 age and state, above.

ONE-LINE READ: a dark sphere crossing open ground in a dead straight line, with a black wedge walking

backwards underneath it.

THE JOB. THIS ROW IS THE CHAPTER'S CLOCK. Everything else in Chapter 10 is very old — beds at 1.8

million years, marks at seventy-seven thousand, a valley "keeping records since long before anyone

could read them" [CH_10.md:25]. The beetle is the opposite instrument and the chapter needs one: it

measures HOURS. A pat with no beetles on it arrived within the last few minutes; a pat being worked

is a few hours old; a pat with nothing but shafts and hollows is a day gone. That is a real,

learnable, HUD-free dating mechanic on a floor whose whole gameplay is reading ground, and it is the

only thing in this chapter that tells the player what happened THIS MORNING.

EMISSION: none, and the sheet is specific about the temptation. The word "scarab" pulls toward a

metallic jewel beetle and toward the sun disc. THIS SPECIES IS MATTE BLACK AND IT DOES NOT SHINE.

It reads by occlusion against pale dust, by the hard-shadow edge that flat Rift light throws off a

domed shell, and by the wet darkening of a fresh-cut ball against a dry-crusted one. The doctrine

does permit iridescent structural colour as a lawful non-emissive read [§ 3.2], and it is REFUSED

here anyway because this animal does not have it — and because a lane that gives it one is already

drifting toward the Ch-15 solar register this sheet has just deferred.

5. articulation_delta

forbids additions.

broad toothed tibia; the tarsal chain and pretarsal claws exist on the middle and hind pairs only.

Weight in the roll therefore passes through a BLADE rather than through a foot, which is why the

animal can brace against loose soil at all, and it drops two bones per side from the bucket's

minimum. § 9 boards the count against the 44-bone floor.

a rolling constraint, and four declared contacts — the two hind tarsi on its surface, driving, and

the two mid-legs steadying. The animal's phase clock is driven off the BALL's rotation rather than

off the ground, which is the inversion that makes the roll read as work instead of as a walk cycle

with a sphere glued to it. When the contacts break, the ball keeps its momentum and goes where the

slope sends it — which is the whole reason the roll is fragile and the whole reason the encounter

is a game.

hinge first; the hindwings unfold from beneath them second. Above 60 Hz the wing is blurred or

shape-driven per the table's solver warning and the animation budget goes to the body path, so the

spend here is entirely on the UNFOLD — which is a real beat, is slow, and is the encounter's only

escape tell.

segment chains on a constant low-amplitude clock, per the bucket's rig rule, with a lamellate club

that fans open when the animal is sampling air.

independent joints. This is the difference between a beetle gripping a ball and a beetle with

twelve tiny broken fingers.

6. fight_grammar

THE ENCOUNTER IS A CONTEST, NOT A FIGHT, AND THE PERMISSION CELL IS WHAT MAKES IT PLAYABLE.

combat_permission reads PERMITTED and combat_facing is TRUE on the ruled state, so the player may

engage. trade_8_tameable QUARRY carries NO_REACH on its own by RULING_9, but its canon definition

still tells the design what the row is FOR: "huntable game. The species is taken for its material ...

Taking one is normal play and carries the ecological and community consequence the corpus already

models" [T3_Creatures_Tameable:101]. There is no boss row and the chapter stages "ambient threats:

none beyond BE_0010_S2" [CH_10.md:98], so this is not a threat encounter and this sheet builds none.

It is a RACE FOR AN OBJECT AGAINST AN ANIMAL THAT IS BETTER AT IT.

PART ECONOMY HOME: EQUIPMENT, declared by name per doctrine § 2.4, and this is its first ANIMAL

instance. The home's stated native case is the crew sub-case — "what the antagonists CARRY: hand

tools, cordage, drag-rigs, crates, cages, descent gear". The ball is exactly that: a carried, losable

object the creature's entire live moveset depends on. **ITS SILHOUETTE FRACTION, stated as a number

band because doctrine § 4 fails a part that carries none: the ball runs roughly one and a half to two

body-lengths in diameter against a three-centimetre animal, so in the roll it occupies ROUGHLY 55 TO

70 PER CENT OF THE COMBINED ANIMAL-PLUS-OBJECT SILHOUETTE** — measured on the object rather than on

the creature, per the VEHICLE precedent, and it is by that measure the largest single silhouette

change any part in this wave produces. THE THREE CURRENCIES HOLD. SUBTRACTION: a beetle separated from

its ball permanently loses the roll, the dance and the dig from its live set. LEGIBILITY GAIN: with

the sphere gone the player is looking at a small black oval and the remaining behaviour reads

instantly. MATERIAL: the ball is the thing the economy wants and it is what the whole contest is over.

§ 9 carries this as a PROPOSED doctrine extension only — **it is raised, not applied, and the director

boards it alongside BE_0010_S2's COHESION rather than ratifying a home on one instance.**

**THE COUNTER CLASSES, STATED AFFIRMATIVELY, BECAUSE NONE OF THE RULED THREE REACHES AN INSECT

CONTEST.** Doctrine § 2.4's three classes are dodge-only, parry-only and elemental-neutralize, and

each assumes an incoming attack: a whole-body commitment to evade, a presented contact surface to

meet, or a gathered element to neutralize. This animal launches nothing at the player, presents no

meetable surface and gathers nothing, so all three are vacuous here and saying so is more honest than

forcing a label. THE THREE CLASSES THIS CONTEST DOES CARRY, named as its own set: TIMING (act in a

window the animal opens by its own behaviour), GRIP (break a hold rather than out-pull it), and

DISPLACEMENT (act on the OBJECT's position rather than on the animal's). Every row below carries one

of those three or is declared free. CR_0056's table is the sibling form and it uses the ruled classes

because a lion does attack; the divergence is the body, not the rigour.
