STATUS: PROPOSAL-TIER design sheet, written to docs/proposals/bestiary/BESTIARY_ELEVATION_DOCTRINE.md
and critic-gated against its ten refusal tests. It cites canon rows and writes none. It is the second
of the Chapter-12 European pair and completes the register's contrast: BE_0012_S1 is the man who
never felt the need to explain himself, and this is the man who has an explanation and believes it.
The chapter's own argument is that the second one is harder to break — "a raid broken by force at the
coast and a ledger broken by evidence in a court, and that the second is harder is the chapter's
argument about power" [west_africa.md § 6].

builds as an ability [KIT_BE_0012_S2 ability 11, The Offer].
reading his own arithmetic back at him. The chapter has already taught the player two exact and
honest counting systems, and the ledger is a third claim that people can be counted

this room: the Ifa 256 Odu binary corpus, sixteen Oju Odu and two hundred and forty Omo Odu whose

specific inventory, the forward head carriage and the slow refocus, the shelf-rails movement rule,
the lamp as the mark, the handwriting-match evidence object, the shelves-he-still-moves-toward meter,
and the tell shapes and silhouette fractions in §6.
ONE-LINE SILHOUETTE READ: the only man on this coast with no coast on him — a seated clerk in a lamplit
room of tally stacks, whose hands, face and shoes have never been on the beach whose every name he
knows.
THE HUMAN REGISTER, SELF-JUSTIFYING POLE, ZERO ANATOMY. The doctrine's checkable law for this pole is
obeyed literally: nothing about his face is sinister, nothing is asymmetric, nothing is shadowed, and
a plate that makes him look like a villain has failed the brief rather than served it.
PRIMARY — A10 NEGATIVE SPACE, and it is the pole's own named axis: THE ELEVATION LANDS ON THE ABSENCE
OF AN OCCUPATIONAL MARK. Every other body in this chapter carries its work. The bronze-caster carries
the foundry, the diviner carries the mat, the sailors carry the sun and the rope, the hunters carry
the bush, and the raid's captain at least carries the beach he stands on. This man's trade IS the
coast and the coast is not on him:
the morning and eight at night, on a latitude where that takes deliberate work.
the writing callus on the middle finger of the right hand. One working mark, and it is a mark made
by a pen.
MECHANISM, and it is the design's whole argument: this is what an extraction economy looks like from
the inside. The distance between the ledger and the beach is not an accident of his temperament, it is
the STRUCTURE — an apparatus is precisely a machine for putting a person who decides at a distance
from the thing decided. His body is the proof, and the player reads it before anyone explains it. The
absence is legible at conversation distance and photographs cleanly, which is what makes it usable.
SUPPORTING — A4 HYPERTROPHY AND ATROPHY, applied as CRAFT, in the BE_0007_S1 pattern. THE
HYPERTROPHY: the reading apparatus. The forward head carriage, the deep and permanent squint-set of
the orbital region, the writing hand's development, and a memory for figures that the encounter treats
as a real capability — he knows every name on that beach and he has never seen the beach. THE ATROPHY:
everything else. He cannot fight, cannot run far, and cannot see across his own room quickly. The two
halves are the same fact.
SUPPORTING — A9 THE MARK: THE LAMP. In a dark interior at night, the light IS the man. He is the only
person in this encounter who carries fire, the lamp sits at his elbow by default and moves when he
moves, and its position in the room tells the player where he is from any corner and through any
doorway. One mark, high contrast, and it is under his control rather than the player's — which is the
deliberate inversion of CR_0151's torch, where the light belonged to the player. MECHANISM AND LIGHT
LAW: he does not emit. The lamp is combustion with a visible fuel and a visible flame, the light law's
first permitted mechanism, and everything in the room including his face reads by being LIT by it. The
mark's escalation is built in and belongs to the kit: when the lamp moves to the shelf, the mark has
become the threat [KIT_BE_0012_S2 ability 5].
SUPPORTING — A5 STATE: THE ROOM'S ORDER. Not luxury and not squalor — MAINTENANCE. The stacks squared,
the day-book open where anyone could read it because nothing in it is incriminating, the second set
kept elsewhere and kept better. The state read is that this room has been run this way for years and
would run for years more, which is the horror the doctrine's banality finding named at BE_0009_S1
and this row's second instance of.
EMISSION: NONE. The lamp is fire with fuel; the day is daylight through shutters; nothing on any body
in this encounter produces its own light.

book. The encounter's most important actions are performed by a man sitting down, and a hand rig

own body in the exit. That is the only moment in the encounter he is a physical obstacle and it is
why it is the only parry-class shape in the set [KIT_BE_0012_S2 ability 10].
[EG_0187; HL_0109], and the people the books count are not depicted or enumerated on screen.
VERBS ARE EXPOSE AND STRIKE, axis 30/40/30, Puzzle-forward. The row's counters, verbatim: the guard
pincer answered by a gap-jump or a Stone Skin block; the ledger-burn threat by racing the exposure or
cutting the alarm line. Two phases, evolve-not-swap — phase 2 RAISES THE GUARD TEMPO ON THE SAME
GRAMMAR and adds nothing.
THE ENCOUNTER'S STRUCTURAL IDEA: THE PLAYER IS NOT LOOKING FOR A MAN, SHE IS LOOKING FOR A STRUCTURE.
The room contains two claims about the world — a day-book that is honest about a lie, and a second set
that is the lie itself — and the win is making the second legible where it can be heard. He is in the
room the whole time and killing him early wins nothing, which is what makes a non-fighter into a real
boss.

THE ROW'S COMPOSURE NODES, CONSUMED BY NAME. `composure_nodes = puzzle_routed=factory_quota_race;
direct=barracoon_guard_break`, and both are built above rather than paraphrased.
PUZZLE_ROUTED = FACTORY_QUOTA_RACE is the encounter's spine: the threatened burn starts a clock and
the race is between the player's reading of the second set and his destruction of it, which is why
the lamp and the stacks are two of the three breakable parts and why the win is EXPOSE before it is
REDUCE.
DIRECT = BARRACOON_GUARD_BREAK is the encounter's one direct-composure node and it is mapped
OUTSIDE the hard-blocked yard: the alarm cord runs to the COMPOUND GATE, and what it calls is the
barracoon compound's guard detail arriving at the ledger house. The break is of those men, on the
approach, at the gate and in the lamplit room — the reinforcement, not the yard. The row's node is
fully consumed and the yard stays what canon makes it, geometry that is never entered
[EG_0187; HL_0109]. Cutting the cord is therefore the same act twice: it denies the row's direct
node its trigger, and it is the reason the guard tempo has a ceiling in phase 2.
ONE SHAPE, ONE ANSWER. The two trigger-interrupt shapes are separated by DIRECTION and the design
teaches them in that order: the wall means the cord, the shelf means the lamp, and both are him moving
away from the desk for a reason. The two weak-point shapes are the same object at two depths — the
mismatch tells the player there is a second set, and the handwriting match is what the second set is
FOR.
THE ONE-ANSWER TEST, ANSWERED EXPLICITLY BECAUSE THIS ROW'S COUNTER CELL LOOKS LIKE A VIOLATION AND IS
NOT. The row reads "the ledger-burn threat -> race the exposure OR cut the alarm line", which at first
glance is one shape with two answers. It is not: THE ANSWER IS ONE — deny the burn its clock — and the
two are TWO INPUT CHANNELS to it, one working on the fire and one on the reinforcement that makes the
fire safe for him to start. They are not alternatives to be guessed between; they are two things the
same tell licenses, and a player who does both has done the answer twice rather than picked correctly.
The guard pincer's pair works the same way: the gap-jump and the Stone Skin block are one answer —
refuse the two doors their squeeze — expressed by movement or by absorption depending on which the
player has.
THE OFFER IS NOT A TRAP AND THE SHEET INSISTS ON IT. KIT_BE_0012_S2 ability 11 makes the share a
real, takeable option and calls it an integrity write, and this chapter does not pretend the
temptation is not real. It is also this pole's required beat: the doctrine rules that the encounter
must let him make his case out loud, and his case is not a monologue — it is an OFFER, which is the
only form a self-justifying man's argument can take that the player can answer with an action.
PART ECONOMY — HOMES DECLARED: EQUIPMENT AND ARCHITECTURE (doctrine §2.4), and this row is the lane's
first with TWO homes on one encounter, which §9 boards. Fractions are stated with their measurement
basis.

stops moving toward shelves, which visibly ends his rails locomotion. Material the economy wants:
the quota structure and the named intermediary that BE_0012 phase 2 needs.

ESCALATION, FOUR CHANNELS — the kit's channels consumed, and every one of them is a man who is not a
fighter discovering it:
happens once.
contact, and the design instruction is that it never resolves.
The self-justifying pole's voice channel is that the account keeps talking after it has stopped
helping him.
THE OPENER AND ITS VARIANTS: the root is THE OPEN BOOK, free, harmless, and a lie of omission. Its
variants are every other paper beat in the encounter — the second set is the open book's contradiction,
the scattered tally is the open book thrown, the offer is the open book turned around. The player
learns in ten seconds that in this room a book being MOVED is the tell, and every dangerous moment
after that is a book being moved.
THE HUD-FREE METER: HOW MANY SHELVES HE STILL MOVES TOWARD. He works on rails, so the set of stacks he
is still willing to walk to is the set that still has something in it. When he stops going to shelves
and starts going to the door, the player has won and can see that she has won.
RELOCATION AND TURF: he ENTERS already inside — the only boss in the chapter who is at home. He
RELOCATES between shelves. He LEAVES exposed. WHAT HE DOES TO THE ARENA: he threatens to burn it, and
that threat is the clock [KIT_BE_0012_S2 § turf].
WIN: EXPOSE;REDUCE — the factory quota dismantled and the extraction load lifted, and the named
intermediary carried forward into the Ogboni night-court [BE_0012_S2 :: win_reward; west_africa.md
§ 12]. has_nonkill_path TRUE: the exposure is the win and his death is not required for it. LOSS:
the row files the factory method for the retry.
economic_apparatus: theantagonist is the European factory's extraction tier — a quota, a ledger and the man who keeps them.
§17.1's protection is COLLECTIVE and it is fully engaged for the Yoruba, Fon, Dogon and Akan
communities, who are never cast as villain and never routed at; it does not make this man
unkillable. HE IS A FULLY KILLABLE INDIVIDUAL ANTAGONIST — the row's secondary verb is STRIKE — and
the non-kill path exists because EXPOSURE IS THE WIN, not because the kill is withheld.
it could break: the named intermediary. The row's evidence object is a NAME APPEARING IN TWO SETS OF
BOOKS IN TWO HANDS, and what it identifies is a TRADE OFFICE the factory's payments pass through —
an institutional link, which is what the Ogboni night-court then reads at CH12_B09 [west_africa.md
§ 12]. This sheet authors no person behind that name: whose office it is belongs to the spine's
complicity chain and to BE_0012 phase 2, and the chapter has already ruled that the sovereign at
the end of it is an antagonist by POSITION and UNAWARE [CH_12.md § Boss structure — reveal

named, and this pole's route requirement is stricter than usual for a reason that is not care but
CRAFT: an unattended generation asked for a slave-trade clerk will return a villain's face, and a
villain's face fails the doctrine's own law for this pole. Any West African figure in the beat's
frames takes the living-community route and is never a raw generation.
(1) THE UNENUMERATED COUNT. The kit holds that the counted people are never enumerated on screen.
Is that a scrub of the historical record — the numbers ARE the history? THE DEVIL'S-ADVOCATE
DIRECTION WAS RUN AND IT HAS REAL FORCE: an atrocity of accounting that never shows an account has
been defanged by exactly the method the chapter is about. THE RESOLUTION IS NOT OMISSION, IT IS AIM.
The arithmetic is fully present and is the WIN CONDITION — the quota structure, the mismatch, the
totals that do not agree, the name in two hands — and the chapter's substrate carries the trade's
real figures at documented weight elsewhere, including the five-cowries purchase price at the palace
door [west_africa.md § 6; SRC_00252, p. 122] and the captive figures of 1724 and 1727 [SRC_00170,
p. 48-49]. What is withheld is an on-screen human INVENTORY as spectacle, which the region page's
own rule covers: the hold is on depiction, never on the fact [west_africa.md § 5]. A player leaves
this room knowing exactly what was counted and how.
(2) A NON-FIGHTER AS A BOSS. Is a clerk who cannot fight a soft encounter? NO — it is the harder
one, and canon says so before this sheet does: the ledger broken by evidence in a court is the
harder of the chapter's two breakings and that is the chapter's argument about power
[west_africa.md § 6]. The boldness check in the other direction finds no defang tell: he owns the
room, he arms the fire, he can burn the evidence, he can buy the witness, he can hold the door with
his body, and he can BUY THE PLAYER. An encounter that can end with the player taking the share is
not a passive one.
(3) A REDUCTION CONSIDERED AND REFUSED OUTRIGHT, recorded because refusing it is the whole pole:
giving him a visible cruelty — a temper, a relish, a mark. Refused. The doctrine's law is checkable
and it is right: a man who looks corrupt has been let off, and every player who sees a monster here
gets to believe this needed a monster.
two spans that are the encounter's own subject rather than its background — the five-cowries
purchase price paid per captive at the palace door, west_africa.md § 6 L1747-1751, and the
kingdom's apiculture audit with its count-by-twos and its one pebble per four hives, § 3 L622-633.
Both are exact counting systems in this region's own record, which is what this encounter's ledger
is set against. A search that matches those spans and returns nothing for a body descriptor of this
row is reporting an absence rather than failing.

fictionality, the verbs, the axis, the phases, the row's counters, the win and death rewards, the

BE_0009_S1's running cable, where the sheet had the same difficulty. The doctrine's part-economy

this sheet states the property honestly instead of inventing a fraction.

probe cannot reach them. That entry is exactly where the body-adjacent canon is: the clerkly voice

is the same finding the BE_0007 / BE_0007_S1 pair produced five chapters earlier.
