documented in the European primary record, Snelgrave 1734, Norris 1789 and Dalzel 1793, and
Snelgrave's account is reckoned by many historians the most accurate contemporary description of
the trading business and markedly less censored than the company reports
[west_africa.md § 12; SRC_00170, p. 51; p. 11].
cutlasses, machetes, swords, axes, hatchets and, most importantly, firearms, and firepower is what
the record says distinguished the parties on this coast [west_africa.md §§ 6, 12; SRC_00170,
p. 46]. Firearms became the preferred trading good, with yearly sales averaging 150,000 in the late
1600s rising to 400,000 by the mid-eighteenth century, and on this coast the number a state held
meant the difference between secured borders and likely defeat [west_africa.md § 6; SRC_00170,
p. 25]. THE DESIGN CONSEQUENCE: his advantage is not personal and it is not martial skill. It is
supply. That is why the fight is won by closing the range his advantage depends on

against Oyo's cavalry Dahomey enjoyed only spotty success, hinting European guns were not the sole
key to victory [west_africa.md § 6; SRC_00170, p. 52]. The line is dangerous, not decisive, and
the encounter is built so a player learns that by beating it.
Luso-Atlantic trade speech — commercial, courteous, and entirely unbothered, which is the horror of
it [west_africa.md § 12]. THAT SENTENCE PICKS HIS POLE. He is not deceived and he is not
self-justifying, because a man who is unbothered has never felt the need to make a case. §4 builds
from there.

the apparatus behind him are all CITED above.
ONE-LINE SILHOUETTE READ: a straight rank of levelled muskets across a coast that has no straight
lines in it, with one unhurried coated figure standing a pace behind the rank's centre.
THE HUMAN REGISTER, KNOWING POLE, AND THE ELEVATION BUDGET ON ANATOMY IS ZERO. Nothing is distorted,
nothing is added, and the doctrine's reason is the operative one here rather than a formality: a
horror-monster body on any human antagonist would let the player believe this happens only when
someone is a monster, and the historical answer is that it happened on a schedule, in a coat, with a
receipt.
THE CREW SUB-CASE, AND THE HEADED/HEADLESS CLAUSE ANSWERED. Doctrine §3A.2 rules that a crew is left
FACELESS when a memorable villain would displace the protected subject in the player's memory, and is
GIVEN a face when the protected subject cannot be displaced. This crew is HEADED, and the reasoning is
recorded because it is the clause's hardest case so far. The protected subject here is a WEST AFRICAN
TOWN AND ITS PEOPLE, which is exactly the kind of subject a charismatic villain displaces — so the
clause's warning fires. Three things answer it and the row already carries all three. Canon names the
head: the row's own boss_name carries the factor-captain, and the spine rules the two European
figures fictional constructed names precisely so the villain seat is OCCUPIED BY THE APPARATUS and
cannot drift onto anyone else [CH_12.md § Decisions surfaced]. The town is not the encounter's
subject-to-be-remembered; the RAID is, and the raid is a European operation with a European face on
it. And the alternative is worse: a faceless European crew raiding a named African town leaves the
town as the only memorable party in its own destruction, which inverts the protection the clause
exists to give. So the head stays, and the crew keeps the sub-case's other three rules — the elevation
lands on FORMATION, EQUIPMENT and ARENA, the part economy is EQUIPMENT, and the four escalation
channels attach to the group's collective behaviour (§6).
PRIMARY — A9 THE MARK, and the mark is THE LINE. One high-contrast, instantly readable identifying
feature, and it is not on his body: it is the FORMATION. This coast has no straight lines in it. The
zone is a shore strip of longshore sand, a surf-beach crossing, an inner lagoon lane and a working
town's curved street geometry, and the kit's own arena list governs it: EG_0185, EG_0187,
EG_0188, EG_0189 [west_africa.md Zone Catalog; KIT_BE_0012_S1 § the arena]. The red-laterite
compound fabric of EG_0182 is a CROSS-ZONE MATERIAL ANALOGUE and not this encounter's arena — its
Zone Catalog home is ile_ife_bronze_city — and it is named here only because the town's wall material
is the same curved, hand-built register a formed rank of muskets contradicts. A
formed rank of levelled muskets is therefore the only straight edge anywhere in frame, it is legible
at any distance in flat coastal daylight, it reads in pure silhouette, and it identifies the encounter
before a single figure is resolvable. One mark, and a creature carrying three marks carries none.
MECHANISM: drill plus supply — linear volley tactics are what a firearm economy buys, and the record
names the firearm as the preferred trading good and firepower as the distinguishing factor on this
coast [SRC_00170, p. 25; p. 46].
SUPPORTING — A3 ARMORED AND BREAKABLE REGIONS, TRANSPOSED ONTO EQUIPMENT. The doctrine's part-economy
enumeration gives EQUIPMENT its own home — what the antagonists CARRY — and this encounter is its
cleanest case: the levelled muskets, the cartridge and powder at the line's hip, his hung cutlass and
his belt pistol are the whole of the fight's material. MECHANISM: a muzzle-loading volley is a machine
made of men, and like a machine it has no redundancy — the drill is what makes twelve muskets into one
weapon, and the drill is breakable at any point in the chain.
SUPPORTING — A10 NEGATIVE SPACE, ON TEMPO. What is missing from him is the raid's own speed. Every
other body on that beach is at emergency pace — the town's people moving, his own crew at the double,
the boats working — and he walks. The absence reads instantly in silhouette because it is a MOTION
absence rather than a shape one: in any wide frame he is the single figure whose outline changes
slowly. MECHANISM: this is the knowing pole made physical. Nothing was taken from him, so the
doctrine's body-grip has nothing to hold, and the read moves onto the world's behaviour around him —
the world is at a run and he is not, because to him this is Tuesday.
SUPPORTING — A5 STATE, read off equipment and climate. Wool and a coat kept on, on a lagoon coast, in
the wet-and-dry monsoon regime [west_africa.md Region Identity]. Sea-chest neatness maintained on a
beach: the coat brushed, the boots wrong for sand, the hat kept. The read the design wants at a glance
is A MAN WHO HAS NOT ADJUSTED TO WHERE HE IS AND DOES NOT INTEND TO — the same "job in progress"
register BE_0009_S1's work detail carries, one century earlier and at a smaller scale.
EMISSION: NONE. Every light in this encounter is the coast's own daylight or a real flame with visible
fuel — muzzle flash and its smoke, which is combustion with a fuel and a cooling colour and is the
light law's own permitted mechanism. The smoke is the design's friend rather than a cost: a fired
volley marks its own line in white for several seconds, which is the mark restated as a consequence.
on him or on any man in the line.
The encounter's entire first phase is legible only if the drill is a synchronised group animation
with a real reload interval the player can count, and if a man knocked out of it VISIBLY breaks
the sequence for his neighbours rather than dying tidily in place.
with a look down the line. It is the kit's ability 7 and it is the encounter's most human beat.
chapter, used while the field is at a run.
precedes the arm by a readable beat.
that there are no additions: his weight passes through an ordinary human chain and the only design
fact about it is that it is rarely committed. He gives his weight to exactly one move, the lunge,
which is why that move is the parry window.
never entered [EG_0187; HL_0109], and the freeing that the win reward names happens as an
outcome at the beat's close rather than as a depicted interior. §7 records the anti-timid pass on
that decision rather than leaving it as an assumption.
VERBS ARE STRIKE AND PARRY, axis 45/25/30, Patterns-forward. The row's counters, verbatim: the musket
volley answered by hard cover or a dodge-roll; the cutlass lunge by a parry-riposte or a
stagger-break. Two phases, evolve-not-swap — the row's clause is that phase 2 TIGHTENS THE VOLLEY
WINDOWS AND IMPORTS THE RAID CADENCE, and the sheet obeys it literally: no new weapon and no new move
enters in phase 2.
THE ENCOUNTER'S STRUCTURAL IDEA: THE PLAYER IS FIGHTING A CADENCE, NOT A MAN. Phase 1 teaches an
interval — present, fire, reload — in a space where cover is real and the town is behind her. Phase 2
puts the same interval inside his own sword. A player who never learns the count can still win by
closing distance; a player who learns it wins the second phase with a parry she could not have timed
an hour earlier. That is the chapter's Patterns axis doing its job.
| tell shape | body origin | one answer | counter class |
|---|---|---|---|
| the presented line — the rank levels and HOLDS | the musketeers, formed; twelve bodies changing outline at once | read it. Nothing is coming yet, and this is the free lesson that teaches the shape | any (free) |
| the raised hand and the steadying rank | his own arm, and then the line settling on it | hard cover, or the dodge-roll off the line — the row's own counter | cover |
| the muskets come DOWN together | the line's own drill, unloading | close. This is the gap and the whole first phase turns on it | any (free) |
| the lead foot slides before the arm moves | his own arm from a seaman's guard, weight committed forward | parry-riposte, or the stagger-break — the row's second counter | parry-only |
| the shooting stops and the crew closes in one body | the crew, in a wedge; the outline goes from a line to a mass | cover, and break the wedge's frontage rather than meeting it | cover |
| the line fires from between the houses | the rank re-formed into a street's width, muzzle smoke boxed by walls | dodge-only — there is no hard cover in a firing lane, only the lane's edges | dodge-only |
| one man reloads slower than the drill | a sailor who did not sign for this, and a look down the line | turn him. They are crew and not soldiers, and some of them stop | trigger-interrupt |
ONE SHAPE, ONE ANSWER, and the two cover-class shapes are distinguished by GEOMETRY rather than by
class: the volley wants an object between the player and the line, and the wedge wants the player off
the wedge's face. The design instruction is that the two never occur in the same second in phase 1,
so the lesson lands separately before phase 2 overlaps them.
THE ONE-ANSWER TEST, ANSWERED EXPLICITLY BECAUSE THIS ROW'S COUNTER CELL LOOKS LIKE A VIOLATION AND IS
NOT. The row reads "the musket volley -> hard cover OR a dodge-roll", which at first glance is one
shape with two counter classes. It is not: THE ANSWER IS ONE — be off the line before the hand drops —
and hard cover and the dodge-roll are TWO PLAYER STATES of that single answer, selected by where the
player already is rather than by a guess. Standing near a bar-stock stack or a street corner, the
answer is cover; standing in the open on the sand, the answer is the roll. The encounter never offers
both from the same position, so there is no coin flip, and the arena is what disambiguates. The
cutlass lunge's pair works the same way: parry-riposte and stagger-break are one answer — meet the
committed weight — expressed at two ranges.
PHASE 2 ADDS NO SHAPE. The tightened volley is the raised-hand shape with the reload gap halved. The
imported cadence is the lunge shape arriving on the volley's interval — the pattern counter, and the
read is the number the player already learned. The pistol is the lunge shape with the off hand going
to the belt at contact range. The retreat toward the surf is the walk, finally moving at somebody
else's speed.
PART ECONOMY — HOME DECLARED: EQUIPMENT (doctrine §2.4). Fractions are stated with their measurement
basis, because two of the three are measured on the FORMATION rather than on the man, exactly as the
vehicle case measures on the arena.
single most legible object on the field because twelve barrels come to horizontal together. Break
threshold: the drill broken at any point in the chain — men turned, the count interrupted, the
hesitant man turned. Break event: the rank's edge goes ragged and the shots stop being simultaneous.
Permanent subtraction: the presented line, the volley and the tightened volley all lose their
formation. Material the economy wants: nothing harvested [KIT_BE_0012_S1 § part economy].
in the guard, which is what makes so small a fraction readable. Break threshold: disarm on a
stagger-break. Break event: he fights with the belt pistol alone, which has one shot in it.
Permanent subtraction: the cutlass lunge and the imported cadence lose their instrument. Material:
nothing harvested.
economy's third part and marked as a PROPOSAL beyond the kit, because a volley is a supply chain and
the chapter's whole thesis is supply. Break threshold: a cartridge box taken, spilled or wetted at
the surf edge. Break event: that file's musket stops being a musket and becomes a club. Material:
nothing harvested, and the design declines to make powder a player resource on this beach.
ESCALATION, FOUR CHANNELS, ATTACHED TO THE GROUP PER §3A.2 — and the kit's channels are consumed
rather than re-authored:
only time in the encounter his outline joins the straight edge.
and the count is what falters first.
muskets one weapon becomes twelve men being shouted at individually, which is the same failure
BE_0009_S1's relay chain suffers and is now the register's second instance.
THE OPENER AND ITS VARIANTS: the root is THE PRESENTED LINE, free and non-punishing, visible on the
approach before anything fires. Every dangerous move in phase 1 is that root with something added —
the volley is the root completed, the taken ground is the root in a narrower geometry, the boarding
rush is the root abandoned. In phase 2 the root is THE LUNGE, and the imported cadence and the pistol
are its two variants: same body origin, same slide, one on a learned interval and one at contact.
THE HUD-FREE METER, and this row has no pips to lean on: pip_count and pip_reveal_threshold are
EMPTY on it. The encounter's readout is THE NUMBER OF MEN STILL IN THE LINE. It is visible from
anywhere on the beach, it needs no interface, and it only goes one way. A player who has never opened
a menu knows exactly how the fight is going by looking at the horizon.
RELOCATION AND TURF: he ENTERS from the beach with a formed line; he RELOCATES toward the town's first
houses, because a volley is worth most in a street; he LEAVES toward the inner lagoon lane and the
surf. WHAT HE DOES TO THE ARENA: he takes the town's own streets and uses them as firing lanes, which
is the encounter's cruellest single idea and belongs entirely to the kit [KIT_BE_0012_S1 § turf].
WIN: the raid broken and the seized captives freed [BE_0012_S1 :: win_reward;
CH_12.md §10 CH12_B06]. LOSS: the row maps the raid cadence for the retry, and the main boss's own
death clause rules the recurrence — the raid returns at higher tempo with the Ahosu's sanction as the
complicity marker, which is the tragedy rather than a new attack [BE_0012 :: death_reward].
oppressor_apparatus: theantagonist is the European Atlantic-trade factory and its armed complement. §17.1 protection is
COLLECTIVE — it protects the Yoruba, Fon, Dogon and Akan communities, the Agojie and the sacred
Ouidah python from being cast as villain, defamed or exterminated — and combat here routes so that
no colonized person is a villain at any point [CH_12.md § Protected-chapter combat framing;
HL_0003, HL_0123]. It equally does not make Ferraz or any man in his line unkillable. THEY ARE
FULLY KILLABLE INDIVIDUAL ANTAGONISTS, without qualification and without softening, and the row
carries no non-kill path.
The documented record is that the Dahomey state conducted much of the regional captive-raiding, at
documented scale, and the canon carries it at full weight in the L2/L3 substrate and as the playable
assimilation test at FORK_CH12_A [west_africa.md § 6; SRC_00170, p. 47-49; CH_12.md § Decisions
surfaced]. This sheet neither softens that nor uses it: the truth lives in the chapter's substrate
and its Decision, and THIS ENCOUNTER'S combat routes at the European apparatus by canon's own
ruling. Nothing here casts a Fon or Yoruba figure as an enemy, and the Agojie are absent from this
beat entirely.
symmetrical. Portuguese and other European peoples are living peoples and §17.1 covers them exactly
as it covers everyone. It does not cover a slaving factory's complement, and the encounter never
names a nation as its enemy: the target is the apparatus, the name is a constructed fiction, and the
design refuses a caricature in favour of the harder read — a courteous professional at work.
never staged as spectacle, HL_0109 binding [EG_0187; KIT_BE_0012_S1 § the arena]. The people

and CLASS-PURE — no element family, no vril mechanism, nothing non-ordinary — because the row
carries no lore home and inventing one for him would be the same defect as glowing eyes.
law. He is identity-bearing and named. Any West African figure who appears in the beat's frames —
the town's people, the raided compound's residents — is ATTENDED_DESIGN or REFERENCE_BUILT under the
living-community rule and is never a raw generation, and no such figure is a target, a hazard or a
hostage-object in this encounter.
(1) THE UNENTERED BARRACOON. Is holding the interior off-screen squeamishness? THE PASS SAYS NO, and
the reasoning is the region page's own rule about the Fon annual customs, applied to a European
building: the hold is on DEPICTION, never on the FACT [west_africa.md § 5]. The fact is carried at
full weight and in several places — the raid is playable, the captives are real and freeing them is
the win, the quota that produced them is the next encounter's entire subject, and the trade's
arithmetic is the chapter's stated theme. The devil's-advocate direction was run properly: a bolder
build would enter the yard and show what is in it, and the case for it is that omission can read as
a scrub. It is REFUSED here for a reason that is not care-inflation — a depicted interior converts
the atrocity into set dressing the player walks past, which is exactly the spectacle the region page
and HL_0109 forbid, and it would make the encounter's most important object into scenery. The aim
moves rather than the content: what the player sees is the RAID, in daylight, being done to people
she has met.
(2) THE COURTEOUS VILLAIN. Is an unbothered, polite antagonist a softening? NO, and this is the
BOLDER option rather than the safer one. A snarling slaver would let a player file this under
monsters. The page's own line — commercial, courteous, entirely unbothered, which is the horror of
it [west_africa.md § 12] — is the harder read and it is the true one, and it is the same finding
BE_0009_S1 recorded about its foreman: the banality is the point.
BOLDNESS CHECK IN THE OTHER DIRECTION, recorded because the doctrine asks for both: nothing here is
a passive encounter. He owns a beach, a formation, a street geometry and a retreat; the raid runs on
its own clock whether the player engages or not; and the loss branch is a worse raid rather than a
reset. The defang tell is absent.
it carries the encounter's whole material layer — the firearm economy and its yearly volumes at
west_africa.md § 6 L1729-1734, the edged-and-hafted arms list at L1721-1724, the counter-case
against Oyo's cavalry at L1735-1740, and the Snelgrave-Norris-Dalzel reading of the Ouidah
operations at § 12 L2988-2996. A search that matches those spans and returns nothing for a body
descriptor of this row is reporting an absence rather than failing, which is the same reading the
leg-7 census made and §9 corrects the scope of.
breakable part, the men-still-in-the-line meter, the seaman's-base craft read, the wool-in-the-wet
state read and the seven tell shapes are INVENTED BY THIS SHEET and are the game's own. The
constructed name and its explicit fictionality, the verbs, the axis, the phases, the counters, the
win and death rewards, the firearm economy, the edged-arms list, the Snelgrave-Norris-Dalzel record
and the courteous-and-unbothered register are CITED.

row whose win_condition is REDUCE. THE CONFLICT NAMED: either the row is missing a non-kill path
the kit has already designed, or the kit's colours-struck beat is a flavour on a lethal reduce and
should say so. This sheet builds it as the latter — he is fully killable and the reduce is the win —
and boards the row-side call for the registry lane. It is the sheet's one genuine sheet-versus-kit
disagreement.

west_africa.md:2560 and, decisively, at :2982 — the § 12 full character entry, "Gaspar Ferraz
(BE_0012_S1) — factor-captain". That entry is HEADING-anchored: the id sits in an #### heading and
the bullets beneath it never repeat it, so a name-anchored, bullet-scoped probe cannot reach any of
them. It is the richest per-row surface on the whole page — it is where the kit, the voice register,
the care handling and the forward track live, and it is where this sheet got the encounter's
equipment read. The same structure hides BE_0012_S2's entry at :3006. A morphology census that
reads bullets only will under-report every row that has a § 12 entry, which on this page is every
human antagonist.
reload interval, a breakable chain and a hesitation state is the arc's first, and every later
musket-era encounter from Ch 33 through the colonial chapters inherits it. Building it here and
amortising it is the cheap path, exactly as BE_0009_S1 argued for the drilled soldier.
