STATUS: PROPOSAL-TIER design sheet. It is the SECOND built instance of the ATMOSPHERIC REGISTER that
BE_0010_gauwasi_shadow.md § 4 declared and boarded for doctrine § 3D, and its arrival moves that
register from one instance to two. It inherits, whole and without re-litigating them, that sheet's
HL_0080 seam ruling, its shelf census, and its BLOCKED-ON-SHELF list; what it adds is the REHEARSAL's
own body — a smaller surface, a smaller division count, a slower edge, and a stake that is
nevertheless real and permanent. It cites canon rows and writes none.

The second built instance of the register declared at BE_0010_gauwasi_shadow.md § 4. The being has
no body, no depiction and no species; it is a CONDITION OF A SURFACE, and its part economy is that
surface plus the player's own held states.

CR_0185 types the //gauwasi species_class = folklore and leaves scientific_name, trophic_role and every husbandry cell
deliberately blank. There is no fauna baseline to depart from, so part one is answered the way the
ICONOGRAPHIC register answers it — by declaring the SUBSTRATE's own construction as the skeleton.
slice where that mis-route is genuinely tempting. Doctrine § 3C's being is made of the medium that
DEPICTS it: its body is the drawn figure, its ROM is what the pictorial convention can draw, and its
motion is substitution between complete drawn poses. The //gauwasi are not drawn on this wall. The
/Xam entoptic repertoire on the panel is the ECHO — the thing under threat — and the encroachment is
what is TAKING it. A sheet that routed this subject to § 3C would have made the panel's own figures
into the monster, which inverts the encounter and defames the art in the same move. ATMOSPHERIC is
the register whose being is made of the medium that CARRIES what it takes, and that is this row.
into three surfaces and gives each a first-pass sizing: a LESSER PANEL at forty by twenty-five, a
main panel gallery at a hundred and twenty by sixty, and a shelter apron at two hundred by ninety
[rift_valley.md L73]. The spine's site row splits the same ground the same way and stages a
different encounter on each — a lesser panel and the main dimming panel, with CH10_B05 hosted here
[CH_10 L85]. This subject's skeleton is therefore the LESSER face and the recess that holds it: a
shallow alcove in the shelter wall, a single panel plane inside it, an overhang lip that governs
which part of the face is lit at which hour, and a rubble apron underfoot the player stands on.
sheet's six divisions across the main gallery are two flanking register groups, two central
figure-groups, the serpent-mark register and the bare-rock margin. The lesser face is the same
division KINDS with the gallery's additions dropped: it carries no serpent-mark register, because
canon puts the oldest serpent-mark on the main panel [CH_10 L85; EG_0149], and it carries one
central figure-group rather than two, because a single alcove face is one composition and not a
gallery. What is left is the subset — two flanking register groups and one central figure-group —
with the bare-rock margin as the boundary they meet. The count is this sheet's, the kinds it selects
from are the sibling's, and the exclusion that fixes the count is canon's, so a later pass corrects
the count by correcting the composition rather than by taste.
at a rate measured in hand-widths per cycle, and it may not leave the panel face, cross onto the
apron, occupy the air, or take a shape in the round. That is not a care restraint; it is the
register's own physics and the exact equivalent of a joint outside declared ROM. THE REHEARSAL'S ONE
DEPARTURE FROM THE MAIN ENCOUNTER, and it is the row's own word made geometric: at the lesser panel
the edge advances at most ONE division and then WAITS, because the row is deliberately forgiving
and the forgiveness lives in the clock rather than in the stake.

appear. What fills is the alcove's own shadowed mouth under the overhang lip; the creature is the
part of the panel MISSING from the read inside it. § 6 states the substitute ruler this passes on.
mesh_pipeline_type = image_to_3d with an EMPTY mesh_tags.morphology and a mesh lane cannot brief a body that does not exist. What the pipeline is
pointed at here is ARCHITECTURE, not a creature: an alcove — a shallow recess in a patinated
sandstone-and-tuff shelter wall, mouth roughly a third the width of the main gallery, one panel
plane set back inside it, an overhang lip above, a loose rubble apron below — authored composition
in the type's manner and never a scan or replica of any documented site [rift_valley.md L558-L562,
L1093-L1098; HL_0007]. The adversary is a DRIVEN MATERIAL on that geometry (§ 5) and takes no mesh
of its own. The honest morphology token for this subject is a no-body surface token the mesh
vocabulary does not yet carry, and § 9 boards exactly that.
THE SHELF GOVERNS EVERY OTHER LINE IN THIS SHEET, AND IT IS INHERITED RATHER THAN RE-RUN. The census
behind it was executed on two independent grains at BE_0010_gauwasi_shadow.md § 3 and is adopted
whole: the Ju|'hoansi practice ethnography this encounter's subject rests on returns ZERO at both
grains, with positive controls that prove the machinery matches. Re-running it here would produce the
same numbers and would let a reader mistake two reports for two witnesses.
this sheet cites resolve live in T0_Source_Material_Registry — SRC_00265 (571 chunks, san_khoisan),
SRC_00215 (55, san_khoisan), SRC_00202 (38, san_khoisan), SRC_00197 (103, cross_cutting), SRC_00481
(42, cross_cutting). A search that can match those and returns nothing for Marshall, Katz, Biesele
or Lee is reporting an absence rather than failing.
gather in the dark beyond the dance-fire and fire invisible arrows of sickness into the living to
pull them toward death, and //Gauwa is the lesser god who sends them — the tradition's own
adversarial dead and its own adversary-deity, never confused with the revered echo or with the
ancestors as venerated [rift_valley.md § 5 L465-L474; CR_0185; CR_0186; CH_10 L29]. THE
CITATION CLASS IS CANON-CARRIED, NOT SOURCE-ATTESTED, and this sheet marks that rather than dressing
it: the region page's own ruling is that it consumes and does not extend, and every Ju|'hoansi and
//gauwasi statement on it is carried verbatim from ratified canon [rift_valley.md L327-L333]. This
sheet adopts that rule and adds not one claim about the tradition.
panel, where the protagonist rehearses perception then vril-management — the protocol's first two
held steps — before the main panel demands all four [CH_10 L125]. The boss index says the same from
the region side: the deliberately forgiving two-step rehearsal of the protocol [rift_valley.md
L135].
optional and genuinely forgiving side-surface — the player who does it learns two of the four steps
before they cost anything, and the player who skips straight to the main panel meets all four at
once [rift_valley.md L788-L792]. An optional encounter that is thin is an encounter nobody plays
twice, and § 6 is written to that.
through the Bleek-Lloyd corpus and the Lewis-Williams neuropsychological model, held as an
art-and-cognition achievement and never as lost super-science or an alien signal [CH_10 L51, L209].
The /Xam corpus is a literature with named narrators, recorded in the 1870s and printed in parallel
text [SRC_00265]. The interpretive model arrives in this corpus together with its published
objections — that it explains production without explaining reception, that the shared imagery may
be a selective mirror of a known environment, and that some regional chronologies cluster the
geometric forms early [SRC_00215; rift_valley.md L437-L448]. THE CONTESTATION IS CONTENT, per the
RCM's own instruction, and § 6 spends it as the rehearsal's second read.
destroyed the /Xam click orthography, so no /Xam word is transcribed from that record into any
player-facing string, and the only spellings carried anywhere are the ones ratified canon already
fixed [rift_valley.md L336-L344; SRC_00265]. The false-friend bar rides with it: the /Xam text
carries a word the OCR renders as ggauwa, five times, in contexts including a man going faint in the
sun's heat, and IT IS NOT THE JU|'HOAN //GAUWASI; nothing here or downstream treats the two as the
same word, the same being, or evidence for one another [rift_valley.md L481-L487].
structurally exposed to is reading a living forager community as a surviving specimen of the deep
past; the page holds four design-level defences against it, and the largest San-tagged block in the
corpus is classed FRINGE-SKIP by name so its volume is never mistaken for a shelf [rift_valley.md
L346-L365; SRC_00283]. Nothing here derives from it.
dance structure, step, clap pattern or song-line; no healer-role term; no trance procedure; no n/um
mechanism internal to the tradition; no //gauwasi demonology or sub-types; no /Xam word transcribed
from the OCR-damaged record; no Hadza or Sandawe word at all; and no reproduction of any documented
panel. All of it is BLOCKED-ON-SHELF and returns at full weight when the acquisition lands (§ 9).
alcove divisions and their derivation, the one-division-then-wait clock, the four tell shapes, the
returned-ground rule, the alcove's shortening echo as a channel, and the persistence of a lost
division across the rest of the chapter. The patina material and the edge-advance motion law are the
sibling sheet's inventions and are inherited with attribution rather than re-invented.
ONE-LINE READ: a smaller wall in a side-alcove going quietly grey at one corner, with an edge that is
a hand's width further out than it was when you looked away.
PRIMARY — A10 NEGATIVE SPACE, and the absent thing is the alcove panel's own figures. The //gauwasi's
attested action is subtraction — they pull the living toward death by taking — so the answer to "what
does it look like" is not a dark shape added to the wall but the wall's marks REMOVED, one register at
a time, with a boundary between what is still legible and what is not. The player reads the creature
by reading what is gone. It is entirely light-free, it costs no emission, and it is the strongest read
available on a matinee-bright Rift afternoon where a glow reads as nothing at all.
SUPPORTING — A8 MATERIAL SUBSTITUTION, and the material is PATINA, inherited from the sibling rather
than re-invented, which is itself the design decision. The dimming is not made of darkness; it is made
of the panel's own weathering run fast — the mineral skin a rock face grows over millennia, laid over
the pigment in cycles the player can watch, ochre going grey under a matte carbonate film, the
contrast between figure and ground closing, the surface no longer taking a raking light. MECHANISM:
vril alters real physics rather than suspending it, and what this being alters is the RATE of a
process the rock already runs. ONE MATERIAL, TWO ENCOUNTERS, ON PURPOSE: the rehearsal exists to teach
a read the main panel then demands under load, and teaching it on a different material would teach the
wrong thing. The art lane is asked for one patina reference set and it serves both rows.
THE MARK AXIS IS DELIBERATELY UNSPENT, and the restraint is the point rather than an omission. The
main encounter's identity is A9 THE MARK — the arrow's ARRIVAL, a short hard matte stroke landing at
an angle nobody is standing at. This row has no arrows: its counters are a free re-perceive on a
misread and a feeding-tell that telegraphs twice, and its kit carries no aimed ability at all. Giving
the rehearsal the apex's one mark would spend it early and leave the main panel with two marks, which
by the doctrine's own rule is none. The rehearsal teaches the READ; the main panel adds the aimed
thing. That is the difference between the two encounters stated in one axis.
ELEVATION BUDGET: TWO AXES, at the doctrine's floor and deliberately there. Scale bands, limb
multiplication, hypertrophy, hybrid form and material substitution beyond the patina are all unspent,
because every one of them would give this subject a body and a body is the one thing the register does
not have.
THE ECHO'S OWN READ, recorded because it is the STAKE: the lesser panel at full legibility is deep
ochre and iron-oxide on patinated stone, the entoptic repertoire crisp — zigzag, grid, dots, nested
curves, filigree [CH_10 L85, L40] — carrying the same accumulated age the main gallery carries at a
smaller scale. A5 AGE AND STATE is spent HERE, on the echo, exactly as the sibling spends it: the
player must be able to see the difference between AGE, which is beautiful and belongs there, and
LOSS, which does not. The two reads are authored as a pair or neither works.
MECHANISM, per the doctrine's requirement: A10 is the deliberate subtraction of a painted register's
own figures; A8 is accelerated mineral patination over pigment. EMISSION: NONE, on the encroachment,
on the echo and on the protocol. The alcove's only light is the shelter's own daylight, angled by the
overhang lip, and § 8 binds the plate set to that.
to blob. What replaces the rig is a DRIVEN SURFACE plus a BOUNDARY, and both are specified here so
the build has something checkable.
loss, and every state between is a blend of a MATERIAL rather than a swap of a texture: contrast,
matte film thickness, and the specific way a raking light stops catching the pigment relief. One
shader parameter set driven per division, three divisions, and that is the encounter's entire visual
payload. It is the same parameter set the main gallery uses, at a smaller instance count.
legible line at gameplay distance, it advances in discrete hand-width increments on a cycle
boundary, and it never eases. A soft gradient turns a creature taking ground into weather.
cleared division stay cleared.
row's word deliberately forgiving made into geometry: at the lesser panel a division reclaimed by
a clean hold STAYS reclaimed and a dropped hold can be picked up without restarting, while at the
main panel ground that is not held comes back. The kit says the same thing from the fight side and
calls it the difference between the rehearsal and the real thing.
returns less of it. The shortening echo in § 6's vocal channel is a real property of the geometry
and is authored on the alcove rather than added as a cue.
geometry is authored composition rather than a scan of any real site [EG_0146 notes;
rift_valley.md L558-L562, L1093-L1098].
sub-boss and two decode surfaces and no familiar [CH_10 L126], which is consistent with the design:
no aimed thing means no parry surface is needed, and the main encounter's Shell-interpose is
therefore genuinely new when it arrives.
VERBS ARE PERCEIVE AND ATTUNE, axis 30/45/25, Puzzle-forward, two phases evolve-not-swap: the read
alone, then the second step layered onto the HELD read. The row's counters, verbatim: a misread grants
a free re-perceive; the feeding-tell telegraphs twice before consequence. This sheet does not restate
the kit's twelve abilities; it supplies the surface they were written for.
THE DISTANCE TEST CANNOT RUN AS WRITTEN AND THE SUBSTITUTE IS STATED AS THE RULER, following the
precedent BE_0006_S2 set for bodiless subjects: this subject has no silhouette, so every tell is
read ON THE WALL, at the size the alcove face occupies in the frame from the shipped combat camera,
and a tell that cannot be seen there has failed exactly as a silhouette tell would. The wall is the
silhouette. The alcove's forty-by-twenty-five face at a one-metre-per-vertex build grain is the
measured surface that ruler runs on [rift_valley.md L73].
THE STRUCTURAL IDEA: A TEACHING SURFACE WHERE THE INPUTS ARE FORGIVEN AND THE STAKE IS NOT. Damage is
impossible and the panel is the only thing that can be lost. What the row forgives is the PLAYER —
misreads are free, dropped holds are recoverable, and the clock waits — and what it does not forgive
is the WALL: the row's own death reward states that a partial read strengthens the node into the Ch
39-plus revisit content. The alcove sits at the same site as the main panel and the same site hosts
CH10_B05, CH10_B07, CH10_B08 and CH10_B09 [CH_10 L85], so a division left lost here is a division the
player walks past three more times in this chapter and meets again at the Ch 59-65 continental revisit
through ws.community_state_per_region [rift_valley.md L1155-L1161]. That is the whole design: the
rehearsal costs nothing to attempt and something to fail.

ONE SHAPE, ONE ANSWER. The double dim and the slow encroachment share a cause and are distinguished by
what the player is given: the double dim is a WARNING with a promised second beat, the encroachment is
the CONSEQUENCE already landed. The ambiguous form is the encounter's one deliberately undecidable
case, included so the player learns that "undecided" is an answer and that the answer to it is to
move rather than to guess.
THE SECOND READ IS THE ROW'S 45 AND IT IS TWO INDEPENDENT CHANNELS, which is the no-dead-end guarantee
the main encounter inherits: the entoptic read is a PATTERN read on the panel's own vocabulary, which
the encroachment cannot produce correctly, and the vril-state sense is a STATE read on the player's
own held heat. Either alone clears a division. The honest second frame the corpus supports rides here
too and is the cheapest place in the chapter to introduce it: the panel genuinely admits two readings,
the tradition's own and the outsider scholarship's, and neither is scored as correct
[rift_valley.md L798-L803; SRC_00215].
BREAKABLE PARTS — TWO HOMES, DECLARED BY NAME PER DOCTRINE § 2.4.
division held clean through a full cycle. BREAK EVENT is the matte film retreating off it and the
pigment taking a raking light again, visible without a HUD from the apron. SILHOUETTE FRACTION, on
the wall-as-silhouette ruler above: the two flanking register groups at roughly a quarter of the
visible face each and the central figure-group at roughly a third, with the bare-rock margin
carrying the rest — every one of them larger, as a fraction of its own frame, than any division of
the main gallery, which is precisely why the rehearsal reads. PERMANENT SUBTRACTION: the edge loses
that division's reach for the rest of the encounter. LEGIBILITY GAIN: direct and accumulating — the
wall gets more readable and the player can see the fight being won on the thing it is about.
MATERIAL THE ECONOMY WANTS: NOTHING IS HARVESTED, by row and on purpose, because the site is
hard_blocked and taking anything from it is not available [EG_0146, EG_0148, EG_0150].
BE_0010_gauwasi_shadow.md § 6 and used here in itstwo-part form: the perception hold and the vril-management hold, which are the row's own
composure_nodes. BREAK THRESHOLD is a hold carried clean through a full cycle; BREAK EVENT is the
corresponding pressure leaving the live set for good; PERMANENT SUBTRACTION is the doctrine's first
currency at its most legible — once the perception hold lands, the ambiguous form stops being
offered; LEGIBILITY GAIN is that the encounter narrows to the wall; MATERIAL: nothing harvested.
ESCALATION on the four channels, obeying evolve-not-swap:
turn the dimming's edge acquires a DIRECTION and stops spreading evenly, and a player names that
before any meter confirms it.
BEFORE the second step is demanded, which is the encounter's earliest warning and lives on the body
the player is already looking at.
porous it returns less, so the alcove goes acoustically flat exactly where it is being lost. It is
free, physical, and usable by a player who cannot see the contrast change.
never withdrawn, which is the whole point of this encounter and the promise the main panel later
keeps and charges for.
THE OPENER AND ITS VARIANTS: the root is THE FIRST MISREAD — the player reads the alcove, gets it
wrong, and is handed a free re-perceive by the row's own guarantee. Its variants are the same act
under more load: the misread with a hold running (the drifting read), and the misread that cannot be
settled from where the player is standing (the ambiguous form). Both are the root with something added
and neither is a new move.
RELOCATION AND TURF: it does not enter and it does not leave. It is on a wall. What it does to the
arena is take it, slowly, and the player is the one who relocates — along the apron and across the
alcove mouth, because position is the second read channel and the encounter is built so that walking
four paces is sometimes the correct input.
WIN: the lesser node cleared, the alcove legible, and the protocol's first two steps rehearsed for the
main panel [BE_0010_S1 win_reward]. LOSS: no death — a partial read strengthens the node, which
returns as revisit content [BE_0010_S1 death_reward], and the player carries a visibly diminished
alcove past three later beats at the same site.
traditions, never a monolithic "San" and never the colonial exonym; their shamans and elders are
inviolate teaching NPCs and never targets; the rock-art continuity carries a role-title and never a
personal name; and no deity-name sits on a mortal NPC [CH_10 L204; HL_0002, HL_0003, HL_0006].
Combat routes only against the //gauwasi, permitted fauna and the protagonist's own trial [CH_10
L59]. The §17.1 line is not merely respected here — the encounter is built out of it, because the
player's entire job is to keep a loss off a people's sacred ground without laying a hand on it.
CR_0185 types the //gauwasi CONDEMNED with combat_permission FOLKLORE_FACED, and its own note declares that the token marks the registry's
FACED pole — what the n/um healer has always fought — and is never a moral condemnation the record
attests. The revered pole is rowed separately at CR_0187, the /Xam Mantis, SACRED and PROTECTED,
cited folklore and never staged as a combat presence. THE SHEET CHANGES NOTHING AND INHERITS BOTH.
BE_0010_gauwasi_shadow.md § 7 rules that thenever-a-puzzle clause and the honored-adversary rule protect beings that HAVE A BODY AND CAN BE MET,
which the //gauwasi at this site do not, and that the four-step protocol is the tradition's own
answer rendered as a mechanic — which is HL_0121's standard rather than a designer converting a
fightable thing into a puzzle. That ruling covers this row by construction and this sheet re-opens
nothing. The structural fact it depends on holds here too: the chapter's never-the-sole-combat-layer
requirement is satisfied by BE_0010_S2, a strike-primary permitted-fauna encounter with
win_condition REDUCE [CH_10 L97, L115].
(1) IS A "DELIBERATELY FORGIVING" MINI-BOSS A DEFANG? The devil's-advocate reading is recorded
fairly and it is not weak: an encounter that forgives every input is an encounter with no failure
state, and a player who cannot lose is not playing. THE ANSWER IS NOT TO HARDEN THE INPUTS — the
word deliberately forgiving is the ROW's and the row is canon — BUT TO ARM THE STAKE, which the
same row already supplies and which the kit's staging leaves on the table: the death reward writes a
strengthened node into the revisit, the alcove sits at a site the player returns to three more times
in the same chapter, and § 6 therefore makes a lost division VISIBLE for the rest of the chapter and
