STATUS: PROPOSAL-TIER design sheet. It is the HUMAN REGISTER's FOURTH POLE — the corrupted man who
believes his own account of himself — and the lane's first boss whose telegraph is AUDIBLE rather
than visual. It is also the lane's most exposed §17.1 subject to date: a corrupt holder of a real
office inside a living faith, standing in vestments the faith actually wears. The care instrument
this sheet lands is the crowd. It cites canon rows and writes none.
display_name "Gäbrä-Ṣəḥuf" — the row's display string is the personal name alone, and §7 records
why that is a care decision rather than a formatting one
(protected FALSE, care_tier ELEVATED — the SITE is unprotected and the FAITH AROUND IT is not,
which is the whole design problem)

borrow from a combat rig. The office is documented as carrying instruction in sacred poetry, song,
and dance and rhythmical movement alongside the chant and the reading-and-writing duties of the
larger churches [ethiopia.md § 12; SRC_00254, p. 103]. His trained ranges are therefore a

breath cycle that is a metronome rather than a stress response. He has no fighting ROM at all and
the sheet does not give him one.
fortress who is never in a hurry, and the design wants that legible in the first frame he is in.
His gait is measured to a beat because his whole training was.
real office — and every line of that silhouette is CORRECT, which §7 argues is the single most
important care decision on this sheet.
and laity, unordained and yet indispensable to the service, charged with the chant, with the
administration of the larger churches, and with their musical and liturgical requirements, trained
in Ge'ez and Amharic and in sacred poetry, song, and rhythmical movement [ethiopia.md § 12;
SRC_00254, p. 103]. The region page's own reading is the design instruction: this is "the region's
single richest office and it is four game systems at once: a music system, a literacy system, a
records system, and the protective craft. Access to a debtera is access to reading — which is
exactly the resource the chapter's antagonist has cornered" [ethiopia.md § 12].
fourteenth- and fifteenth-century manuscripts are institutions of CUSTODY as much as of production
[ethiopia.md § 12; SRC_00254, p. 46], and the revision and comparison of texts is documented as
skilled work done WITH indigenous priests versed in Ge'ez and in Scripture [ethiopia.md § 12;
SRC_00254, p. 70]. The region page draws the conclusion this sheet builds on: the profession the
monopolist has enclosed is "not a bottleneck by nature, a collaboration by nature" [ethiopia.md
§ 12]. Kidane (CHAR_0066) is drawn from that office and is the good-path lever.
its ground plan, universally and irrespective of size or period — qəne mahlet, the outer chanting
space of open access; qəddəst, the middle communion space held by priests and entered by laymen
for the sacrament; and mäqdäs, also called qəddusä qəddusan, the closed innermost chamber, guarded
and kept in near-darkness [ethiopia.md § 7; SRC_00254, p. 99]. The isolation of the innermost
sanctuary is named as one of the tradition's archaic retained traits [SRC_00254, p. 109], and the
innermost chamber is the receptacle of the ark-object, the object of the deepest veneration
[SRC_00254, p. 96]. The region page states plainly that this "is a level-design grammar and an
access rule at once, and it is cited."
elders resolves a dispute sitting by the gate or under a tree in the field — public, sited, and
legible from a distance; the region page names it as "the staging that makes the main boss's
exposure before the assembled clergy feel like this culture's own procedure" [ethiopia.md § 12;
SRC_00254, p. 13].
Shotel — Brute, short blades, canonically acquired at Ch 9, placed as the Brute-stagger prep hook
for the guard rotation, "which is the one place the main-boss encounter admits a direct-force
answer at all" [ethiopia.md § 6; T0_Weapon_Registry @ WPN_035; HL_0056]. The region page
authors no shotel technique because the corpus carries none, and this sheet inherits that limit.
placeholder "Abuna Giyorgis" collided with the living patriarchal office and with the revered
saint Abba Giyorgis of Sägla; Josh ruled the reframe to liqä-mäzämmir, a genuine non-patriarchal
Ge'ez cantor/scriptorium office, plus the constructed Ge'ez name Gäbrä-Ṣəḥuf, "servant of the
writing" [BOSS_PERSONAS # boss_09_main; CH_09 § Decisions surfaced].
pattern later industrializes, but the player perceives no family, name, or pattern behind him; his
recognition runs through briefing, never a tier-6 vril read, and Ge'ez is read as literacy
[CH_09 § Boss structure — reveal binding; HL_0035, HL_0103, HL_0028].
the custody-chest furniture and its locks, the lamp-oil economy, the chant-as-rotation-clock
mechanism, the clean-hands mark, the five tell shapes, and the crowd instrument in §7. None of it
is presented as the tradition's claim; all of it is a corrupt individual's own arrangement.
ONE-LINE READ: a man in the correct vestment of a real office, standing perfectly still while
everything in the room moves to his breathing — and his hands are clean.
THE HUMAN REGISTER'S FOURTH POLE, DECLARED AND BOARDED (§9). The register carries the
CORRUPTED-AND-DECEIVED (BE_0002 — a man hollowed by a bargain he did not understand), the
UNCORRUPTED (BE_0007 — a blade that would not be bought), and the CORRUPTED-AND-KNOWING (BE_0008 —
a man who knows exactly what he serves). Gäbrä-Ṣəḥuf is none of the three and he is the commonest
kind of them all: he has an ACCOUNT of himself, the account is coherent, and he believes it. The
persona states it exactly — "he tells himself he is preserving the tradition; in truth he is
curating it into a private monopoly" [BOSS_PERSONAS # boss_09_main]. Nothing was taken from him,
nothing was promised to him, and no one lied to him. He arrived here by a sequence of reasonable
decisions each of which he can still defend, and the encounter is built so a player can hear him
defend them and feel the pull of it. That is the pole, and the design consequence is precise: THE
CORRUPTION MUST NOT BE VISIBLE ON HIS FACE. A man who looks corrupt has been let off.
PRIMARY — A10 NEGATIVE SPACE, ON THE HANDS. He holds the office of the master of the written word
and he has not written in years. A working copyist's hands carry the record of the work — ink at the
first two fingers and the heel of the writing hand, a callus where the reed sits, the specific
stains of a trade done daily. His are clean, soft, and unmarked, and he keeps them visible because
he has never once thought of them as evidence. The player meets Kidane's hands at CH09_B09 and
Tibebu's hands at CH09_B05 in the same chapter, both marked by the same work, and the read lands
without a line of dialogue: THE ONE MAN IN THIS BUILDING WHO OWNS ALL THE WRITING IS THE ONE MAN IN
IT WHO DOES NONE. It is entirely light-free, it is readable at conversation distance, it is the
exposure's own physical evidence, and it belongs to the negative-space axis exactly — the absent
thing that reads.
SUPPORTING — CRAFT, AND IT IS THE FIGHT'S CLOCK. He is a liqä-mäzämmir, a chief of chants, and the
office's training is rhythm [ethiopia.md § 12; SRC_00254, p. 103]. He does not fight. He CONDUCTS:
his hired guard rotation moves on his chant, the aisles close on his phrase-ends, and the tightening
formation the row's own escalation clause names is a tempo change and nothing else. His telegraph is
therefore AUDIBLE, which is new in this lane and is the answer to a boss whose canon win condition
is exposure rather than damage. §6 builds it.
SUPPORTING — EQUIPMENT, AND IT IS ARCHITECTURE. He has arranged his fortress-scriptorium in a
three-ring imitation of the church plan he grew up inside — an outer hall of open access, a middle
room the copyists work in, and a closed innermost chamber, guarded and kept in near-darkness, where
the manuscripts are [ethiopia.md § 7; SRC_00254, pp. 96, 99, 109]. In a real church that chamber
holds the tabot and no player ever enters it. HE HAS BUILT A PRIVATE ONE AND PUT BOOKS WHERE THE
HOLY THING GOES. That single fact is the character, the level, and the exposure's argument at once:
it is why the assembled clergy turn on him in one beat rather than three, and it is why the heist
can have a forbidden interior WITHOUT the game ever entering a real mäqdäs — the room the player
breaks into is his, not the faith's, and the difference is the point.
MECHANISM, per the doctrine's requirement: A10 is the absence of occupational marking on the hands
of a man whose office is that occupation; the craft axis is trained vocal rhythm used as a command
channel; the equipment axis is architecture and custody hardware. NO ELEVATION ON THIS ROW IS
ANATOMICAL AND NONE EMITS. Emission: NONE. The scriptorium's light is lamp-oil — combustion with
visible fuel, a colour that tracks temperature, and an ash cool-down — and it is a rationed resource
he controls, which §6 makes a mechanic.
The blob test passes because there is nothing to blob.
hold, the slow controlled weight-shift, the raised open hand on a phrase-end, the head-turn that
arrives after the eyes. It must be visibly TRAINED, because the player has to believe this man
is good at something before the sheet takes it away from him.
the chest and shoulders at gameplay distance, in silhouette, from behind, and through cloth.
This is a rigging requirement, not a texture one, and it is the single hardest ask on the sheet.
ones, Kidane's working ones, Tibebu's working ones. The mark is a comparison, so all three must
exist before any of them reads.
individual patrols. The tempo is the boss's, and the guards' animation must sit ON it.
leader among them, elevation on formation and equipment rather than on any body, and the labour
moveset does not apply here because these are paid fighters rather than a work party. They are the
chapter's one crew that is genuinely armed, and §7 rules why that is not a §17.1 problem.
church in the region — the outer space is open, the middle is entered for the sacrament, the
innermost is never entered [ethiopia.md § 7; SRC_00254, p. 99]. The player fights only inside
the monopolist's own building, and the resemblance between the two plans is the thing the level is
saying, not a licence to fight in the other one.
VERBS ARE DECODE AND EXPOSE, axis 30/45/25, Puzzle-forward in the stealth register. The row's
counters, verbatim: the guard rotation, beaten by a timing-gap read or a Brute stagger with the
chapter's Brute weapon; and a manuscript cipher with two independent decode chains. Two phases,
evolve-not-swap — the row's clause is tightening rotations and shrinking gaps, no new patterns.
THE ENCOUNTER'S STRUCTURAL IDEA: THE BOSS IS THE METRONOME, AND THE PLAYER'S REAL OPPONENT IS A
TEMPO. He never attacks. Everything that attacks is on his beat, the beat is audible before it is
visible, and a player who learns to hear him walks through a rotation that a player who only watches
cannot cross. This is what makes a decode-forward boss a FIGHT rather than a lock: the puzzle is not
on a page, it is in the air, and it is running whether the player has solved it or not. The row's
Phase-2 clause is explicit that this is a real fight — the guard rotation closes the aisles while
the evidence is still on the desk — so the exposure is performed under pressure and against a clock,
never as a cutscene the player watches.
| tell shape | body origin | one answer | counter class |
|---|---|---|---|
| the phrase-end — his raised open hand comes down and the chant lands on its final syllable | the diaphragm empties; shoulders drop; the hand descends on the beat | MOVE. The rotation steps on this and only on this, and the gap opens behind the step | positional / timing-gap |
| the caught breath — the inhale comes early and short | the chest rises against the cycle; the phrase truncates | he has seen something. Break line of sight NOW; the next rotation is off-pattern and the gap you counted is not there | interrupt-only (stealth-class) |
| the closing aisle — two guards square across the run between the custody chests | full-body brace, shields to the aisle mouth, no weapon raised | the Brute stagger; it is the one place in the encounter where direct force is the correct answer, and the chapter hands the player the weapon for it [HL_0056] | stagger-class |
| the lamp taken — a guard lifts the aisle lamp and carries it with him | one arm up, gait slowed to protect the flame | this is the rotation's own eyes moving; take the LIGHT, not the man — the aisle he leaves goes dark and stays dark | positional |
| the wrong line — the cipher answers, and the answer is a text he wanted rotted | no body at all; the page gives back sense | this is the second decode chain opening, and it is EVIDENCE. Take it and keep moving; it does not fight back and it is what wins | none (reward-shape) |
ONE SHAPE, ONE ANSWER. Rows one and two share an origin — both are his breath — and they are
distinguished by DIRECTION: the phrase-end is an exhale that completes, the caught breath is an
inhale that arrives early. The disambiguator is audible before it is visual, and the encounter
teaches it in the first corridor with no guard present. This is the deliberate cross-creature lesson
the doctrine asks lanes to name: it is the same read as BE_0002's breath-attunement at Ch 2, moved
off a guardian and onto a man, and a player who learned to hold a rhythm at the water source already
owns the grammar for breaking one here.
THE EXPOSE VERB IS THE 45, AND IT IS A REAL SECOND FIGHT. Phase two is not the reward for phase one.
The evidence is on the desk, the clergy are assembling in the outer hall, and the rotation is
closing the aisles between those two facts. The player is carrying something fragile through a
tightening formation toward an audience, and every second spent fighting is a second the ledgers are
not in front of anyone. The row's own reward text makes the alternative real and costly: the blade
route is available and costs the FORK_CH09_A disposition that returns the manuscripts whole, because
a dead monopolist cannot sign anything back [T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry @ BE_0009]. That is the
correct shape for a rated-M game — killing him is permitted, it works, and it costs something the
player can see.
BREAKABLE PARTS — NOT ON THE BOSS, AND THIS IS THE VEHICLE-AND-ARENA ECONOMY BE_0008 BOARDED, HERE
IN ITS ARCHITECTURAL FORM. Each carries the three currencies:
break threshold is the lamp taken or smothered; break event is one aisle going to darkness;
permanent subtraction is that stretch of the rotation losing its sightline for the rest of the
encounter; legibility gain is large and inverted — the room gets harder to see and much easier to
READ, because what remains lit is exactly where he still has people.
taken with the cipher or the hinge taken with the Brute; break event is a chest standing open in a
room whose whole premise is that nothing is open; permanent subtraction is a rotation node — the
guards are stationed to chests, and an opened chest stops being worth standing on; the material the
economy wants is the manuscript itself, which is EVIDENCE rather than loot and cannot be sold.
stagger's noise, by a chest going open where he can hear it, or by the first ledger reaching the
outer hall; break event is the rotation losing its clock and the guards, briefly, moving on their
own judgement; permanent subtraction is that he cannot restart at the same tempo, so P2's tightening
is bought back a step; legibility gain is the largest in the encounter, because silence in this
building is information.
ESCALATION on the four channels, obeying the row's tighten-don't-add clause:
the stillness that read as authority starts reading as a man who cannot afford to sit down.
shorter phrases mean more phrase-ends mean a faster rotation, and he is spending his own air to
buy tempo. A player who has learned the clock can hear him paying.
stops being chant. The words drop away, the tempo remains, and what is left is a man counting.
THE ESCALATION IS THE MOMENT THE SACRED THING BECOMES A TOOL IN HIS MOUTH — audible, unmistakable,
and it is his own account of himself collapsing in a channel no ledger could show.
the player all encounter closes, and the counting has no gaps in it at all. The player must now win
on the chests and the lamps rather than on the beat.
THE OPENER AND ITS VARIANTS: the root is THE PHRASE-END, the encounter's most legible and least
punishing tell, taught in an empty corridor. The caught breath is the phrase-end failing. The closing
aisle is the phrase-end answered by bodies. The counting in P2 is the phrase-end with the meaning
taken out.
RELOCATION AND TURF: he does not relocate and that is characterization rather than a limitation — he
has never had to go anywhere, because the building was built so that everything comes to him. What
MOVES is the rotation and the player. What ENTERS in P2 is the assembled clergy, arriving into the
outer hall, and the arrival is the encounter's real escalation: the room fills with witnesses and he
has to keep conducting in front of them.
WIN: the monopoly broken by evidence, the manuscripts freed back to their people intact, and the
disposition set at FORK_CH09_A. LOSS: he retains partial copies via the pre-journal remembered
tells — each attempt decodes a little more — AND he moves the collection while the player recovers,
so the Ch-39 restitution thread opens at a worse position [T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry @ BE_0009].
That is a loss with a world consequence and no fail-wall, and it is the best-designed death reward
in the slice: losing to a hoarder makes the hoard harder to find.
living faith; the Church, its clergy, the debtera, the faithful community and the inviolable Ark
tradition are never combat targets, and the faith is depicted as luminous and as it understands
itself [CH_09 § Protected-chapter combat framing; HL_0002, HL_0006]. The boss is a corrupt
individual within the institution and is broken by exposure [HL_0003, HL_0123]. The exposure
this sheet has to survive is not the rule — it is the STAGING: a villain who wears real vestments,
holds a real office, and stands inside a real architectural grammar is one bad frame away from
reading as an indictment of the office itself.
the office off him — that would falsify the character, contradict the ruled name, and remove the
only reason a manuscript monopoly is possible in this world. It is to make sure HE IS NEVER THE
ONLY ONE IN THE FRAME WEARING IT. The spine already supplies the mechanism at CH09_B10: the
exposure happens before the assembled clergy, and the region page grounds that staging in the
culture's own public procedure [ethiopia.md § 12; SRC_00254, p. 13]. So the design rule is
stated here as a build requirement rather than as an intention: at the climax the room contains
many people in the correct vestment of this faith, they are all reacting, and they are all on the
player's side. The player's last image of Ethiopian Orthodox clergy in this chapter is a body of
people repudiating a man who used their office. THE OFFICE IS EXONERATED BY POPULATION. Every
earlier beat honours the same rule at smaller scale: Kidane the copyist, Tibebu the debtera, and
Zelalem the ark-bearer are all inside the same tradition and all allies, and two of the three are
in the building.
ledgers, custody chests, private lamp-oil, an architectural imitation he built himself, and a pair
of hands that stopped working. Not one of those is supplied by the office. Everything the OFFICE
supplies — the vestment, the chant, the training, the title — is rendered CORRECT and treated with
weight, including by him. He is good at it. That is what makes him worth exposing.
patriarchal title, no saint's name [BOSS_PERSONAS # boss_09_main]. The row's display_name is
the personal name alone — "Gäbrä-Ṣəḥuf" — and that is correct care and correct craft at once: the
player-facing string never puts the OFFICE on the villain's nameplate, so the health bar cannot
read as "cantor" or "priest." The office is spoken by characters who hold it too.
corrupted_individual, and he is FULLY KILLABLE. §17.1 protection is collectiveand it protects the Church and the community; it makes no claim about a man who has cornered their
books. The blade route is canon, it works, and it costs the FORK_CH09_A disposition. The guards
are hired fighters and are killable without qualification. Nothing here is softened.
a living religious community in its own vestment; the concept-first law already forbids generating
an identity-bearing asset without a picked judged plate, and this sheet adds that no plate in this
set may be raw-generated from a "priest" or "monk" prompt of any kind, because that class of prompt
is exactly where a generator's stereotype lives. Vestment, tonsure, and every liturgical object in
frame are REFERENCE_BUILT from the tradition's own record [ethiopia.md § 7 and the §17.1
reference-built rule]. The same route binds Kidane, Tibebu and Zelalem, and it binds them harder,
because they are the exoneration.
(1) HE NEVER SWINGS. Is a boss who does not fight a defanged boss? The pass rules NO and records
the devil's-advocate reading fairly: a final chapter boss the player cannot hit is measurably less
satisfying, and the lane should not pretend otherwise. It is kept because the canon win condition
is exposure and the row itself makes P2 a real fight with a closing formation and a clock — the
danger is not reduced, it is REASSIGNED, and the doctrine's defang tell is about passive
OPPONENTS, not about opponents who fight through people. Two safeguards make it hold: the guards
are lethal, and the blade route on him personally is available at a stated cost. A player who
wants to kill him can.
(2) THE VESTMENT. Is dressing a villain in a living faith's real garments too far? The pass says
NO and keeps it, on the crowd instrument above and on a second ground: the alternative — a
generically-robed hoarder with no office — would make the manuscript monopoly incoherent and would
quietly suggest the game cannot show this faith's clothes on anyone but a saint. The reframe tool
was already used once here, correctly, on the NAME. Using it a second time on the CLOTHES would be
the inflation the standing law names as a defect.
(3) THE PRIVATE MÄQDÄS. Is having him imitate the church's innermost chamber an insult to the
chamber? The pass rules NO: the imitation is legible AS an imitation, the real chamber at Saint
Mary of Zion is referenced and never entered anywhere in the chapter [CH_09 § Key sites], and the
clergy's own recognition of what he has built is the exposure's strongest beat. A design that
would not let a villain imitate a sacred form has decided the form is fragile.
the chant-as-clock mechanism, the clean-hands mark, the five tell shapes, the counting escalation
and the crowd rule are INVENTED BY THIS SHEET and are the game's own. The office, its training,
the church's threefold plan, the custody-and-collaboration nature of the copying profession, the
public-dispute staging, and the shotel's canon slot are CITED. No claim about what the tradition
holds rests on an invention.
reference, or pattern token. He is FAMILY_BRIEFED and the player perceives an individual's
corruption and nothing behind it [HL_0035, HL_0103]. His recognition of the protagonist at
CH09_B02 runs through briefing and never through a vril read, and the Ge'ez the protagonist reads
is literacy [HL_0028]. Nothing in his voice lines may gesture at an organisation, a method he
was taught, or anyone he answers to — his whole persona is that he believes he invented this
himself, which is also, conveniently, the reveal-safe reading.

reproduces the interior of the Chapel of the Tablet or any real mäqdäs; no plate depicts a tabot;
no plate is briefed from a generic "priest," "monk," or "cult" prompt; every liturgical object in
frame is drawn from the tradition's own record; and PLATE F is briefed at the same fidelity as
PLATE C, because a crowd rendered worse than the villain would undo the exact thing it is for.
CORRUPTED-AND-SELF-JUSTIFYING, a man with a coherent account of himself that he believes. The
design law it carries is specific enough to be checkable — the corruption may not be visible on the
body, the elevation goes onto the absence of an occupational mark rather than the presence of a
sinister one, and the encounter must let him make his case out loud. It is the most reusable pole
in the register, because the arc's institutional antagonists are nearly all this. What remains
BOARDED is the sweep: every human boss row from Ch 10 to Ch 77 now needs its pole named, and the
seven already-built sheets carry theirs implicitly rather than in a declared field.
T0_Boss_Attack_Railtypes a tell as a SHAPE, and this encounter's primary tell is a SOUND with a shape attached. The
rail needs a modality field, or the whole class of conductor, caller, drummer and chanter bosses
will be typed as their subordinates' bodies. Ch 21's archive and Ch 14's Meroe inherit this
directly.
ontology_class AND collect_verb ARE EMPTY on this row while every other Ch 9 row carries a target_type. corrupted_individual is doing the work ontology_class was specified for, and the
registry lane should decide whether human antagonists take an ontology class at all or whether
target_type supersedes it for the human register.
hitzone_parts EMPTY — the EIGHTH instance and the FIFTH distinct meaning. BE_0008's parts are aship, BE_0008_S1's are restorative, BE_0008_S2's are hand tools, four earlier rows meant "none
exists," and this row's are ARCHITECTURE — lamps, locks and chests that belong to the arena rather
than to anyone in it. The doctrine amendment the lane has been boarding since Ch 8 LANDED IN THIS
PASS (§2.4, the part economy's seven homes); what stays boarded is the REGISTRY side — the column
still cannot distinguish any of the seven, and no gate can check what a sheet declares.
phase_trigger, escalation_vector and phase_voice_array EMPTY on the row in the slice wherethe phase VOICE is the escalation. This is the third consecutive chapter where the voice channel
turned out to be load-bearing and the third where the column is empty; here it is worse than
before, because the P1→P2 change is defined as chant becoming counting and there is nowhere in the
schema to say so.
defeat_protected AND has_nonkill_path EMPTY while win_condition reads EXPOSE;PACIFY;REDUCEand the row's own reward text prices the blade route against FORK_CH09_A. Three win conditions on
one row, one of them with a stated disposition cost, and no field expresses the cost. The EXPOSE
route's pip question raised on BE_0008 is now live on a MAIN boss.
dressing. The exposure needs many correctly-vested reacting NPCs at plate fidelity in one room.
That is a crowd-system requirement (variation, reaction states, LOD that does not degrade the
vestment) and it belongs in the same wave as the civilian-routing system BE_0008_S2 boarded.
encounter's only direct answer, and the region page declines to author its technique because the
corpus carries no material-culture record [ethiopia.md § 6]. The stagger-class tell in §6 is
therefore designed against a weapon whose real reach and guard behaviour are unknown. Phillipson
and Munro-Hay are the named acquisitions and this encounter is now a consumer of them.
