If this document disagrees with canon, CANON WINS and this document is the defect — fix the

STATUS: PROPOSAL-TIER design sheet. It is the lane's THIRD CREW row and the first with a FACE on it,
which is the difference that shapes the whole design. It is also the fifth consecutive sheet to hit a
corpus edge — this region's shelf carries no zoology at all — and it handles that by moving the
encounter's readable content off the animals and onto the trapper's own lines, which is both honest
and better. Its central finding is that the antagonist and the protagonist win by the same skill. It
cites canon rows and writes none.

slice has needed: HOLDING. The trapper's trained range is a long, low, weight-settled crouch that
he can hold for a very long time without shifting, plus a slow rise out of it that costs him nothing
and does not telegraph. Everything else about him is ordinary. The hands are ordinary throughout —
they carry, they set, they run, and they fight badly.
down the slope, which is the single most legible thing about him at distance. The hands are loaded
and labour; they move straight at what they want and pay for it in breath.
something below and to the side of him rather than at what is in front — and behind him, at
intervals across the slope, a set of small worked shapes that do not belong on a mountain.
THE HONEST STATE OF THE EVIDENCE FIRST, BECAUSE IT DECIDES WHAT THIS ENCOUNTER CAN BE ABOUT.
region-filtered substrate. A region-scoped query naming the wolf, the ibex, the gelada and Simien
wildlife topped out at 0.38 and returned a lexical discussion of the Ge'ez word for lion. The page
therefore "states no wolf behaviour, no ibex escarpment behaviour, and no gelada troop structure,"
and rules the design consequence for THIS ROW by name: the encounter "rests on the spine's own
staging — outpace the crew on the fauna's own ground and corner them against the escarpment — and
not on an ecology the corpus does not carry" [ethiopia.md § 3].
behaviour, no gelada troop behaviour, no denning, no rut, no seasonal movement, no predation
relationship, and no animal-behaviour puzzle of any kind. The encounter contains animals and does
not claim to know them, which is the honest position and — as §4 argues — the better encounter.
region's own CLASSIFICATION of animals. The Ge'ez scriptural tradition preserves a full
clean-and-unclean bird and insect list — eagle, vulture, osprey, hawk, raven, ostrich, owl,
sea-gull, heron, swan, ibis, pelican, hoopoe, night raven, hornbill, water-piper, water-hen and bat
are named unclean, with the locust kinds and the many-footed flyers — and touching their carcasses
renders a person unclean until evening [ethiopia.md § 3; SRC_01468, c. 275]. The page reads it as
"a live constraint on the hunting and gathering loop inside this region and a real reason an NPC
declines something the player offers." This sheet makes it the encounter's moral floor plan (§6).
gelada, CR_0053 Walia ibex, CR_0054 bearded vulture, CR_0055 thick-billed raven; three carry TAME
and two carry OBSERVE, and "the roster's own split is the design instruction: the wolf and the
lammergeier are watched, the gelada, ibex and raven are approached" [ethiopia.md § 3;
T0_Creature_Roster].
Ground, slot G3, bonds across Ch 9-10 on the Simien escarpment THROUGH DEMONSTRATED HIGH-ALTITUDE
STILLNESS AT A DAWN VANTAGE, carrying high-altitude tactical awareness, and guides the protagonist
south into the Rift Valley [ethiopia.md § 3; T3_Familiars_Named # Desta]. The page binds the
portrayal in the same breath: the species' real conservation status holds, "the wolf is never a
trophy, never farmed for the bond, and the poaching encounter exists precisely so the player's
relationship with it starts in defence."
Simien, with altitude, cold and escarpment as declared environmental parameters, and the endemic
Walia ibex and Ethiopian wolf are protected and never the target — combat routes through the
poaching crew [CH_09 § Key sites; §10 CH09_B07; HL_0003, HL_0005, HL_0123].

their lowland origin, the trap-line as a readable field object, the load mechanic, the trapper's
eye-line tell, the four tell shapes, and the stillness parallel in §4.
ONE-LINE READ: a patient man on a rock line who never looks at what is in front of him, and four
tired men below him carrying more than they can run with.
THE CREW SUB-CASE, CENTRED — THE OPPOSITE DECISION TO BE_0008_S2 AND BOTH ARE CORRECT. The kaya crew
was deliberately given no leader, because a memorable villain on the threshold of a living people's
sacred ground would become, in a player's memory, the thing that ground is for. Nothing like that
applies here: the ground is a mountain, the protected parties are ANIMALS, and there is no community
whose sacred site could be displaced by a face. So this crew gets its face, and the register gains
its second variant. The rule the pair establishes, boarded in §9: a crew is left headless when a
named antagonist would displace the protected subject, and given a head when the protected subject
cannot be displaced by one.
PRIMARY — CRAFT, AND THE CRAFT IS THE PROTAGONIST'S OWN. The canon bond mechanic for Desta is
DEMONSTRATED HIGH-ALTITUDE STILLNESS AT A DAWN VANTAGE [T3_Familiars_Named # Desta]. The trapper's
entire expertise is the same skill: he wins by not moving, in cold, at altitude, for longer than
anyone else is willing to. THE ANTAGONIST AND THE PROTAGONIST WIN BY THE SAME DISCIPLINE, and the
whole encounter is the difference between what the two of them do at the end of it. That is the
sheet's central finding, it costs nothing to build, and it makes a poaching mini-boss into the
chapter's cleanest character statement — the player learns the skill from a man who uses it to take,
and then uses it at dawn to be trusted.
SUPPORTING — A9 THE MARK, and it is on the LANDSCAPE rather than on any body: THE TRAP-LINE. A set of
small worked shapes at intervals along a contour — snare anchors, a cut peg, a disturbed stone, a
tied cord — arranged in a line that a mountain would never produce. It is the encounter's one
readable index, it is visible before any figure is, it tells the player exactly how much of this
slope the crew already owns, and it is the meter the encounter is scored on (§6). One mark, and it is
a pattern in the ground rather than a feature on a face.
SUPPORTING — A5 STATE, read off equipment and off ALTITUDE. These are not mountain men. They are a
commercial crew who came up for a season, and the mountain is charging them for it: they are cold in
the wrong clothes, short of breath on every climb, and slow in the mornings. The trapper is
acclimatised and they are not, which the player can see in the first thirty seconds and which is the
encounter's whole tactical map. What they carry completes the read — snares, cordage, poles, crates,
and cages, some of them occupied.
MECHANISM, per the doctrine's requirement: the craft axis is trained postural stillness and cold
tolerance; A9 is worked hardware placed on a contour; A5 is altitude physiology and carried load.
NOTHING HERE IS SUPERNATURAL AND NOTHING EMITS. Emission: NONE. The encounter is fought in
high-altitude daylight from before dawn to full morning, and every read in it is a silhouette against
sky or a shape against scree — the light law's own named mechanisms, at the one site in the chapter
where the light does all the work for free.
enough that the player's eye stops registering the trapper as a figure, and a rise out of it that
does not load first. This is the encounter's signature asset and it is also, exactly, the animation
the protagonist needs for the Desta bond at dawn — one asset, both ends of the beat.
turns, climbs and fights differently from one carrying nothing, and the difference must be visible
at distance. The load mechanic in §6 has no existence without it.
occupied and an empty state, and a silhouette that reads on scree at range.
are watched at distance, they move away from noise, and the design asks nothing else of them
until the acquisition lands. Desta's own bonding behaviour is the exception and it is canon.
lethal EDGE, with ground that reads as committed or uncommitted from the player's own position. The
row's counter — cut off their escape along the escarpment — is a geometry requirement before it is
a design one.
VERBS ARE TRAVERSE AND STRIKE, axis 30/40/30, Puzzle-forward. The row's counters, verbatim: use the
altitude and the endemic wolves' own ground to outpace the crew; cut off their escape along the
escarpment. Two phases, evolve-not-swap — the row's clause is that the pursuit STEEPENS, which is a
terrain change rather than a moveset change and the sheet obeys it literally.
THE ENCOUNTER'S STRUCTURAL IDEA: THE PLAYER WINS BY MAKING THE JOB IMPOSSIBLE TO CARRY OUT — LITERALLY.
A poaching crew's whole problem is that what they take has to be carried down a mountain. The player
is the only body on this slope carrying nothing, and that is their entire advantage: they cannot
out-fight five men and they do not have to. Every crate dropped, every cage opened, every snare
sprung empty is a permanent subtraction from the value of the crew's season, and a crew whose season
is worthless goes down the mountain. This is BE_0008_S2's principle — the player wins by making the
job not worth doing — expressed on a different axis, and the axis is WEIGHT.
| tell shape | body origin | one answer | counter class |
|---|---|---|---|
| the eye-line — the trapper's head turns to a point on the slope that has nothing in it | head and eyes only; the body does not move at all | he is looking at a set. There is a trap-line where he looked, and the fastest thing the player owns is to get there first | positional / read |
| the rise — he comes up out of the hold without loading first | no wind-up, no weight shift, the legs simply extend | he has committed to a route and it is already chosen. Do not chase the man, cut the contour he is on | positional |
| the carry — a hand shoulders a crate and starts down | full load on one side, the free arm out for balance, eyes on his feet | strike, or better, take the LOAD. A man mid-carry cannot answer either way and the crate is worth more than he is | strike-class / positional |
| the drop-and-turn — a hand puts the load down deliberately and squares up | the load goes down under control rather than falling, hands come free, feet plant | this is the only honest fight in the encounter and it is winnable. Meet it — and note what he chose: he would rather fight than lose the crate | parry / meet-class |
ONE SHAPE, ONE ANSWER. The carry and the drop-and-turn share an origin and are distinguished by
whether the load is RELEASED or SET DOWN, which is one clear authored frame and is legible at
distance. It is the deliberate teaching pair, and the lesson is the encounter's thesis stated as a
mechanic: a man who will not put the crate down is beaten by taking it, and a man who puts it down
has already given the player what they came for.
THE 40 ON THE SECOND AXIS IS THE PURSUIT, AND THE PUZZLE IS ALTITUDE. The row's first counter is
explicit — use the altitude and the wolves' own ground to outpace them — and the design reads that as
a physiological fact rather than a magic route: the crew is unacclimatised and loaded, the player is
neither, and so every climb the player forces costs them more than it costs the player. The traverse
verb is therefore about choosing GROUND, not about moving fast. Phase two steepens it and the crew
cannot pay.
THE PROTECTED FAUNA IS A HARD CONSTRAINT AND IT IS ALSO THE SCOREBOARD. The endemic animals are never
targets [HL_0005; CH_09 §10 CH09_B07]. The design makes that a positive rather than a prohibition:
what the player is scored on is how much of the crew's take is still alive and still on the mountain
at the end. The clean-and-unclean list gives the region its own reason for the taxonomy to matter,
and it belongs here rather than in a codex — the crew are taking things this culture would not touch,
which is a live constraint on the region's own hunting loop [ethiopia.md § 3; SRC_01468, c. 275] and
a real reason a highlander will not help them and will help the player.
BREAKABLE PARTS — THE CREW'S TAKE, and this is the equipment part economy in its clearest form. Each
carries the three currencies:
threshold is a set sprung or lifted; break event is the line going visibly dead where the player has
been; permanent subtraction is that stretch of slope stops producing for the crew for the rest of the
encounter; legibility gain is the whole map — a dead line and a live line look different from
anywhere.
colour): break threshold is the latch, the strap or the carrier; break event is an animal leaving;
permanent subtraction is that hand's ability to move at speed for the rest of the fight, because a
man who has lost his load is sent back up for another; the material the economy wants is NOTHING —
and the sheet is emphatic about it: nothing taken from this encounter is loot, the animals are not a
resource, and the reward is the biome and the bond.
the anchor cut; break event is the crew's planned route off the mountain ceasing to exist;
permanent subtraction is the escape option the row's own counter names; legibility gain is that the
crew's movement changes character completely — they stop retreating and start negotiating with the
ground.
ESCALATION on the four channels, obeying the steepen-don't-add clause:
cornered against the escarpment, the shape inverts: the hands are above and the trapper is BELOW
them, at the edge, because he is the only one who will stand on ground the others will not.
change at any point, and that is his whole characterisation.
worked by voice. P2 they stop calling — and the silence is not discipline, it is that they have
stopped coordinating and started looking after themselves.
the line at all and simply waits somewhere the player has to come through, which is the same
behaviour he has been demonstrating all encounter, aimed at a person for the first time.
THE OPENER AND ITS VARIANTS: the root is THE EYE-LINE, free and unpunishing and the first thing
visible on the approach. The rise is the eye-line acted on. The carry is what the eye-line was for.
The hold in P2 is the eye-line with the player in it.
RELOCATION AND TURF: the crew's turf is a CONTOUR, not an area, and it moves along the slope as the
line is worked. The player's counter-turf is altitude. Nothing bolts anyone in place, the escarpment
edge is the one boundary that means anything, and the encounter ends when the crew chooses down.
WIN: the biome secured, Tesfa's trust earned into Ch 10, and — at a dawn vantage, in the stillness the
encounter has spent its whole length teaching — Desta [T3_Familiars_Named # Desta]. LOSS: the row
rules it logs the crew's route for the retry. The sheet asks one thing of that branch: the trap-line
should be FURTHER ALONG on the retry, so the loss is legible in the ground rather than only in a
counter. No fail-wall.
encounter's target position at all: combat routes through a commercial poaching crew, the endemic
fauna are protected and never targets, and the local highlander is an ALLY [HL_0003, HL_0005,
HL_0123; CH_09 §10 CH09_B07]. The sheet makes one routing decision on top of canon and declares
it: THE CREW IS FROM ELSEWHERE. They are a commercial outfit that came up for a season, not Simien
people. That is an invention (§ below) and it is a §17.1 one — the alternative would cast the
region's own highland community as the despoilers of their own mountain, in the one chapter whose
thesis is that this place's people built and kept things. Tesfa, an Amhara-Agaw highlander, is the
counter-witness and the ally, and the trust the player earns from him is the beat that says which
way the region actually points.
oppressor_apparatus IS THE ROW'S WORD AND IT IS DOING SOMETHING SPECIFIC. It is not a claim thata trapping crew is an occupying army; it is the registry's type for a commercial apparatus that
extracts from a place at the expense of the people and the living things in it, which is the same
shape as the stele detail at a smaller size — and the two rows sitting in one chapter under related
types is the chapter's thesis in the data.
benefits from. The Ethiopian wolf's real conservation status binds the portrayal directly: never a
trophy, never farmed for the bond, and the player's relationship with it starts in defence
[ethiopia.md § 3]. The design honours that by giving the encounter NO material reward at all.
Nothing that comes off this mountain is worth money.
no animal behaviour and no ecology [ethiopia.md § 3]. Read straight, that is a limitation. Read
properly, it protects the encounter from the exact failure the doctrine's replica test exists to
catch: an invented ecology performed as fact in a region whose real ecology is a live conservation
subject.
FULLY KILLABLE without qualification. §17.1's collective protection has no claim here at all —
there is no community being represented by them — and the standing violence law applies plainly.
Tesfa and any Simien figure are members of a living community and are ATTENDED_DESIGN and
REFERENCE_BUILT.
no material reward a soft encounter? The pass rules NO and keeps it: the reward is a familiar, a
biome, and a relationship that carries a chapter forward, which is a larger reward than any drop in
the chapter, and the absence of loot is what makes the encounter's argument legible — a player who
could sell a cage would read the mountain as a resource. The devil's-advocate reading is recorded:
a rated-M action game that hands out no drops for a full mini-boss risks reading as a lecture. The
answer is that the drop table is not the only currency and this beat pays in the one the chapter
cares about. (2) IS THIS ENCOUNTER TOO GENTLE OVERALL — a wildlife-protection beat in a chapter of
heavier ones? RULED NO. It is a five-against-one pursuit fought by an eleven-year-old at 4,000 m
against men with tools and a rope, its leader is the most competent physical antagonist in the
chapter, and it is the one encounter in Ch 9 where the player can simply be outlasted. Nothing here
is softened; what is absent is loot, not danger.
trap-line object, the load mechanic, the four tell shapes, the eye-line tell, the altitude-asymmetry
design and the stillness parallel are INVENTED BY THIS SHEET and are the game's own. The endemic
roster and its TAME/OBSERVE split, Desta's canon bond mechanic and element, the clean-and-unclean
taxonomy, the site's declared parameters, and the absence of a regional arms record are CITED. NO
ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR IS CITED OR INVENTED, because the first is impossible on this shelf and the second
is the failure this sheet is built to avoid.

PASS at doctrine §3A.2: a crew is left without a named antagonist when a memorable face would
displace the protected subject (BE_0008_S2's kaya), and given one when the protected subject cannot
be displaced by a face (here, animals and a mountain). Both variants are built and both are argued
from §17.1 rather than from taste; the test is what the player will remember the place FOR.
turn and combat availability — and being strippable by the player — is a systems feature, not an
animation one. It is the encounter's primary win route and nothing owns it. It also recurs at every
smuggling, salvage, caravan and looting beat in the arc, including this chapter's own stele detail.
hitzone_parts EMPTY — the TENTH instance. This row's meaning is the same as BE_0008_S2's (handtools and carried gear), which is the first REPEAT in the sequence rather than a new meaning, and
that is the argument that the column is now describable: five or six enumerable kinds, not infinite.
The amendment is drafted in this chunk's doctrine pass.

on the boss.
ws.familiar_bond_state FIRES ON THIS ROW AND THE BOND'S OWN MECHANIC LIVES SOMEWHERE ELSE. Desta's bond condition is demonstrated stillness at a dawn vantage [T3_Familiars_Named # Desta], the boss
row writes the bond flag, and no field on either side references the other. The familiar lane and
the boss lane are describing one beat from two rooms.
precisely because this chunk's other acquisition finding is a build blocker and the two must not be
confused. The encounter is fully buildable now; the animals in it are ambient because the shelf is
empty [ethiopia.md §§ 3, 16]. It joins the Ch-6 Tovil literature, the Adam's Peak practices, the
Kandha Puranam, and Phillipson/Munro-Hay on the list.
death_reward and win_reward are prose, and thisrow's design intent — that the encounter deliberately pays NOTHING material, as a care and thematic
decision — cannot be distinguished by any gate from a row whose drops were simply never authored.
The RNG/drop lane will fill an empty table one day and quietly break the encounter's argument.
owned by neither lane. It is the poacher's craft and the Desta bond's input, and if the two lanes
build it separately the encounter's whole thesis — that they are the same skill — is invisible.
