STATUS: PROPOSAL-TIER design sheet. It is the lane's FIRST MACHINE BOSS — the encounter's real body
is an extraction rig, and the part economy the doctrine assumes on flesh lives on gear, cable and
sheerlegs — and its second CREW row, inherited from BE_0008_S2 with one difference that changes the
design: this crew HAS a face. It is also the lane's first encounter set inside real, dated,
twentieth-century military occupation, and §7 states the routing that makes that first-class rather
than fraught. It cites canon rows and writes none.

per the human register.
BE_0008_S2 specified, differently sourced — these are not woodcutters but MACHINE OPERATORS. The
trained motions are the crank, the brace against a turning handle, the two-hand lever, the hand
signal down a line of men who cannot hear each other over the gear. Their fighting is those
motions used on a person, and the escort's is not: the escort are soldiers and move like soldiers,
which is the encounter's one genuine martial register and its one genuine danger.
of ONE mast pair (sheerlegs) with a spreader head, TWO powered winch drums on a common bed, a
running cable through three blocks, a transport cradle on rollers, and a ground anchor set. Its
"joints" are the head sheave (one axis, free), the drum axles (one axis, driven), the block swivels
(two axes, load-limited), and the mast feet (one axis, ±12° before the anchors take over). The
cable is the spine chain and it is the only part of the machine that is not rigid.
encounter is built on it — the load goes UP, slowly, and it does not come back down under control
once the anchors have been re-set. Everything else the rig does is bracing to permit that.
is the encounter's terrain and it is the encounter's antagonist, which is the same statement.
and taller than it, with cable running down out of it to men.
Section-18 time-fluctuation window; the 1937 removal of the Aksum stele and the 2005 restitution
that returned it are the window's content, and the region page rules the combat framing on it
directly — "combat here is first-class and routes through the occupation's extraction apparatus and
its machinery, never the site, its heritage, or its people," staged "with the weight a real theft
deserves," with the restitution logged on the win "so the arc of the beat is loss and return rather
than loss alone" [ethiopia.md §§ 6, 18; HL_0003].
protected living heritage, type-accurate referenced compositions and never high-poly replicas of
the actual monuments [ethiopia.md § 7].
at the head of the column — the Levites carry the Tabernacle of the Law, two named bearers walk it
forward, and the fighting men march on its right and its left, before it and behind it, singing as
they go [ethiopia.md § 6; SRC_00449, p. 278]. The region page draws the design conclusion this
sheet builds on, verbatim: "Ethiopian warfare in its own literature is an escort… BE_0009_S1 is a
defence of a monument against an extraction crew, which is the same shape — the object at the
centre, the people around it" [ethiopia.md § 6].
own documented request for a taken book back [SRC_00449, p. 7], and the fact that its manuscripts
sit in foreign libraries [SRC_00254, p. 46] [ethiopia.md § 18]. The same theft at a size a person
can carry, which is what makes the main boss and this sub-boss the same chapter.
region-filtered corpus carries NO engineering account of the stelae: a region-scoped query for the
stelae, obelisks, monolithic granite and the Ezana inscriptions returned only a hyperdiffusionist
source describing EGYPTIAN monuments, so the page "states no quarrying method, no raising method,
and no carving sequence," and names Phillipson and Munro-Hay as the acquisitions [ethiopia.md
§ 7]. (b) There is NO military or material-culture record for this region in the processed corpus
at all [ethiopia.md § 6]. This sheet therefore authors no ancient raising method and reads no
ancient engineering off the monument.
opening: no quarrying or raising sequence, no inscription content on any stele beyond the Ezana
trilingual the spine already names, no ancient tooling, no clergy or community response staged as
ritual, and no specific real grave, tomb-shaft or subterranean chamber at the site. The monument in
frame is a type-accurate referenced composition and is not a survey of the real field.
part of its part economy, the load-height meter, the foreman's schedule, the four tell shapes, the
escort's behaviour, and the restoration of the escort SHAPE as the win read. The 1937 removal's
documented method — how the stele was actually taken and moved — is NOT in this corpus, so the
extraction staged here is the game's own machine at a real historical event, and the method is
boarded as an acquisition alongside Phillipson and Munro-Hay (§9).
ONE-LINE READ: a black lattice of cable and gear standing where nothing has ever stood, with a man
at the bottom of it holding a clipboard and a watch.
THE ELEVATION IS ON THE MACHINE, AND THAT IS A REGISTER THE DOCTRINE HAS NOT NAMED YET (§9). The
human register's zero-anatomy rule applies to every person here and takes the elevation budget to
nothing; the crew sub-case explains the men but not the encounter. What the player fights, reads,
learns and breaks is the RIG.
PRIMARY — A3 ARMORED AND BREAKABLE REGIONS, TRANSPOSED ONTO A MACHINE. This is the axis the doctrine
built for plates, scutes and horn sheaths, and a lifting rig satisfies it more literally than any
animal in the slice: it is an assembly of load-bearing parts, each with a real break threshold, a
real break EVENT with a physical consequence, and a real material consequence for what remains. The
row's own counter names it — sever the extraction rigging to stall the haul. The design requirement
the doctrine attaches to this axis (permanent subtraction, legibility gain, a material the economy
wants) is met part for part in §6, and the reason the transposition works is that a machine, unlike a
monster, has NO redundancy: cut the running cable and the load does not move, and no amount of
courage on the crew's part restores it.
SUPPORTING — A1 SCALE BAND at ARENA, and the band is carried by the object rather than by the enemy.
The stele is 24 m of single granite [ethiopia.md § 7]. The rig is built to that number, the arena
is the space under and around it, and the player's whole sense of stakes is a vertical one they get
from standing at the bottom of it. What carries the extra mass, per the axis's own requirement, is
stated in the machine's ROM in §2: everything the rig does other than lift is bracing to permit the
lift, and that is why every one of its parts is a target.
SUPPORTING — A9 THE MARK, and it is a NUMBER THE PLAYER CAN SEE: THE GAP UNDER THE STONE. Once the
load takes weight there is daylight between the stele's base and the ground, and that gap is the
encounter's entire scoreboard. It is visible from the approach before any figure is, it is legible
at any distance, in any weather, at a glance, with no HUD, and it only ever goes one way unless the
player makes it go the other. One mark, and it is a line of light under something that has not moved
in seventeen centuries.
SUPPORTING — A5 STATE, on the men, read off equipment: uniform, but not parade uniform. This is a
work detail on a schedule in a country their army is occupying — coats off, sleeves rolled, gloves,
the escort bored at the perimeter because nothing has happened for three days. The read the design
wants at a glance is A JOB IN PROGRESS, exactly as the kaya crew's was, and the horror is the same
horror: nobody here thinks they are doing anything unusual.
MECHANISM, per the doctrine's requirement: A3 is mechanical load paths and their failure modes; A1 is
the monument's real dimension setting the arena; A9 is a lifted load's own daylight gap; A5 is
occupational dress and posture. NOTHING HERE IS SUPERNATURAL AND NOTHING EMITS. Emission: NONE. The
site is lit by highland daylight and the rig reads by silhouette against it, which is the light law's
first-named non-emitting mechanism and is why this encounter is scheduled in the open air.
up, blocks that swivel under load, mast feet that shift within their declared ±12° before the
anchors take over, and a load that hangs. The encounter's legibility depends on the player
believing the cable is under tension, and there is no way to fake tension in a wide shot.
does not fall, it WHIPS, and that is both the most dangerous single event in the encounter and the
clearest possible confirmation that the player did something irreversible.
(the gap in §4), driven by the rig's state rather than by a script.
cannot hear each other. It doubles as their combat vocabulary, exactly as BE_0008_S2's labour
moveset does, and it amortises across every quarry, dock, siege and salvage crew in the arc.
operators do not share. The player must be able to tell an operator from a soldier in one frame
at distance, because §6 gives them different answers.
referenced rather than reproduced [ethiopia.md § 7]. No player ability marks it, no enemy attack
marks it, and no failure state damages it. The rig may be climbed; the stone may not be cut,
scarred, burned, or used as a weapon by either side.
VERBS ARE PART-BREAK AND PROTECT, axis 45/25/30, Patterns-and-Preparation. The row's counters,
verbatim: sever the extraction rigging to stall the haul; turn the site's own terrain against the
crew. Two phases, evolve-not-swap — the row's clause is tighter crew coordination and NO NEW
MACHINERY, which is the cleanest escalation clause in the chapter and the sheet obeys it literally.
THE ENCOUNTER'S STRUCTURAL IDEA, AND IT IS THE INVERSE OF THE KAYA'S: THE LOSS CONDITION MOVES
UPWARD. BE_0008_S2's line moved inward and could not be bought back with damage; here the load moves
UP, and the same rule holds with one crucial difference — the player CAN bring it back down, by
taking the rig apart, and every part they take costs the machine height it has to earn again. So
this is the slice's first encounter where the meter is two-directional and the player's own actions
drive it. The fight is not "survive the crew." It is "get the stone back on the ground and make the
job impossible," and the crew is what stands between those two things.
| tell shape | body origin | one answer | counter class |
|---|---|---|---|
| the take-up — the drums turn, the cable straightens, and the gap under the stone grows | the machine, not a man; the whole rig settles as load transfers into it | this is the loss condition moving. Cut the running cable or take a drum crew, and take it NOW — nothing else on the field matters while the drums are turning | positional / interrupt |
| the brace — an operator throws his weight onto a turning handle, back to you | full shoulder and hip load committed away from you, both hands occupied, feet planted | strike; a man braced on a winch is the most open target on the field, and taking him stops that drum | strike-class |
| the signal — the foreman's raised arm goes down the line and the whole detail changes task at once | one arm, one gesture, and the change is in twelve bodies rather than one | this is the ONLY thing the foreman does and it is what makes him worth reaching. Interrupt him and the detail keeps doing what it was doing, which is now the wrong thing | interrupt-only |
| the escort turn — a soldier at the perimeter stops watching outward and starts walking in | the drilled walk, weapon coming off the shoulder into carry, shoulders squaring to you | this one is a real fight and cannot be traded with a work-crew answer; meet it, or break line and make him come through the rig | parry / meet-class |
| the whip — a cable the player has already cut under load, releasing | no body at all; stored energy leaving the machine | GET BEHIND SOMETHING. It is the encounter's only unanswerable event and it is one the player caused | cover-only |
ONE SHAPE, ONE ANSWER. The take-up and the brace share a location and are distinguished by what is
MOVING — the machine or the man — and the encounter teaches that distinction in its first ten
seconds, because the rig is already running when the player arrives. The escort turn is the
deliberate cross-encounter lesson: it is the first drilled soldier the slice has fought, and its
shape is the one the arc's later occupation and army encounters all reuse.
THE PROTECT VERB IS THE 30, AND IT IS THE ESCORT SHAPE RESTORED. The site is not empty. The people
who tend it are present and are not combatants, and the encounter's protect layer is keeping the
fight off them and off the monument — which is the same directional work BE_0008_S2 costed on the
civilian group, in a chapter whose own literature already describes the correct answer: the object at
the centre, the people around it, the fighting men on its right and its left [ethiopia.md § 6;
SRC_00449, p. 278]. THE OCCUPIERS HAVE PUT THE OBJECT AT THE CENTRE TOO — as cargo. The player wins
by making the shape mean what it meant. That is a design read the region page laid down and the sheet
is only building it.
BREAKABLE PARTS — THE RIG, and this is the vehicle-and-arena part economy in its purest form. Each
carries the three currencies:
distance): break threshold is a cut at any point under tension; break event is the whip and the
load settling; permanent subtraction is THE TAKE-UP removed until the crew re-reeves it, which is
minutes of their time and the player's largest single gain; legibility gain is total — the gap
under the stone stops growing and everyone on the field can see it.
pawl jammed, the handle taken, or the crew driven off; break event is a drum spinning free and
paying out; permanent subtraction is half the lifting rate per drum, permanently, because the row
forbids new machinery arriving; the material the economy wants is the cable itself, and it is the
one salvage on this field the player may take.
it): break threshold is the stake set pulled or the guy released; break event is the mast feet
reaching their ±12° and the whole lattice leaning; permanent subtraction is that the rig can no
longer take full load without re-anchoring; legibility gain is the biggest in the encounter,
because a leaning rig is visible from anywhere on the map and tells the player they are winning.
is DENIED — occupied, fouled, or tipped — and the material the economy wants is the ground it stops
being able to receive.
ESCALATION on the four channels, obeying the tighten-don't-add clause:
once the rigging is cut and the site is being defended, THE WHOLE DETAIL FACES INWARD: operators
stop operating and pick up what is nearest, and the escort closes off the perimeter into the middle.
A work party has become a fight, and no new machine arrived to do it.
is the player's map of who is who once the coats and the light stop helping.
numbers. P2 the counting stops and is replaced by orders. The channel change is that the LINE
breaks — in P1 every voice is relayed down the chain because the gear is loud, and in P2 men start
shouting past each other.
directed WORK, in P2 directs PEOPLE, and it is the same arm making the same gesture for a different
purpose.
THE OPENER AND ITS VARIANTS: the root is THE BRACE, a man leaning on a handle away from the player —
the most legible and least punishing thing on the field, visible on the approach, and free. The
take-up is the brace's purpose. The signal is the brace commanded. The escort turn is the brace's
opposite: a man whose whole job is to face you.
RELOCATION AND TURF: nothing relocates. The rig cannot and the stele must not, and the encounter's
whole subject is that one of those two facts is under attack. What ENTERS is nothing; what LEAVES is
the detail, and whether it leaves with a load is the beat.
WIN: the looting halted, the site defended, and the historical restitution thread logged so the arc
of the beat is loss and return rather than loss alone [ethiopia.md § 18]. LOSS: the row rules it
maps the crew's method for the retry, and the sheet asks the build for one specific thing on that
branch — that the stele's absence be VISIBLE in the site on a subsequent visit, because a monument
that vanishes off-screen teaches nothing and the empty base teaches the whole chapter. No fail-wall.
occupier_apparatus: theantagonist is an occupying army's extraction detail acting under orders, and combat routes through
that apparatus and its machinery, never the Aksum site, its heritage, or its people [HL_0003,
HL_0123; ethiopia.md §§ 6, 18]. This is ruling 5's first-class case: combat against an
occupier is not a care problem, it is the reason the care rules distinguish an apparatus from a
people in the first place.
Italians are a living people and §17.1's collective protection covers them exactly as it covers
every other. It does not cover the Fascist state's occupation apparatus, and the individuals in
this detail are combatants under arms in an occupied country and are fully killable, without
qualification and without softening. The distinction is carried in the design rather than asserted:
the encounter never names a nation as its enemy, the target type is the apparatus, and the men are
drawn as MEN ON A SCHEDULE rather than as a caricature — which is both the honest history and the
harder read.
sadist and does not gloat. He is a competent man completing a task he was assigned, on time,
keeping his crew safe and his gear in order, and he would be a good foreman on any other job. That
reads as WORSE, not gentler, and it is the true shape of what happened at real sites. A cartoon
villain here would let the player believe this only happens when someone is evil.
replica [ethiopia.md § 7], it takes no damage from anyone, no ability marks it, and the Chapel of
the Tablet at Saint Mary of Zion is not in this encounter at any range [CH_09 § Key sites]. The
people who tend the field are non-combatants under the protect verb.
The Ethiopian figures present at the site are members of a living community and are ATTENDED_DESIGN
and REFERENCE_BUILT, held minimal here because this beat is not about them.
staging a real 1937 theft as a playable fight too far? The pass says NO and keeps it at full weight,
on the standing law's own terms — if it is true history, do not hide or scrub it — and on the region
page's ruling that this is the region's anti-occupation set-piece and its hardest historical weight
[ethiopia.md § 18]. The devil's-advocate reading is recorded fairly: a real theft turned into a
boss fight risks trivialising it into content. The safeguard is the restitution log on the win and
the visible empty base on the loss, which together make the beat's subject LOSS AND RETURN rather
than a set piece. (2) THE ABSENT ATROCITY. This sheet deliberately stages a theft rather than a
massacre, though the historical occupation contains far worse. The pass rules that a DESIGN
decision rather than a care one — the chapter's thesis is knowledge and custody, the main boss is a
hoarder, and this beat is the same crime at imperial scale — and records that the omission is
scope, not squeamishness, and that no lane should read it as a ruling that the wider history is
off-limits.
foreman's schedule and signal, the four tell shapes, the escort behaviour, and the two-directional
meter are INVENTED BY THIS SHEET and are the game's own. The 1937 removal, the 2005 restitution,
the 24 m monolith, the escort war-shape from the Kebra Nagast, and the documented request for a
taken book back are CITED. The actual method of the 1937 removal is NEITHER cited nor claimed —
the machine here is the game's own and the real method is a boarded acquisition (§9).
token. The looting apparatus is a separate un-rowed antagonist and is not connected to NW_0008 in
anything the player sees [CH_09 § Boss structure — reveal binding]. The thematic rhyme between this
theft and the monopolist's is carried by the player's own eyes and never spoken by an NPC.

as a survey; no plate carries a national emblem, flag, or insignia as an identifying feature; no
plate depicts violence against the monument; no plate depicts an Ethiopian figure as a subject of
the occupation's action. PLATE G is briefed at the same fidelity as PLATE B, because the encounter's
whole argument is a comparison between the two frames.
because this row is its only instance. Its law: zero anatomy, the elevation lands on load paths and
their failure modes, the part economy is mechanical with no redundancy, the escalation channels
attach to the OPERATORS rather than to the machine (a machine has no posture and no breath), and
the machine supplies the meter. Every siege engine, quarry rig, mill, pump, press and vehicle
antagonist in the arc inherits it, and Ch 33's caravel and the Ch 55 vessels are the near
neighbours and the rows that will confirm or break the provisional status.
hitzone_parts EMPTY — the NINTH instance and the SIXTH distinct meaning. This row's parts are aMACHINE's, which is neither a body region, nor a ship, nor a hand tool, nor architecture, nor
restorative, nor absent. The doctrine side LANDED IN THIS PASS (§2.4, the seven homes); the
registry side stays boarded, and this chapter alone added three of the seven meanings.
escalation_vector, phase_trigger AND phase_voice_array EMPTY on a row whose escalation clauseis unusually precise in prose ("tighter crew coordination, no new machinery") and whose phase voice
is a CHAIN BREAKING rather than a voice changing. The relay-call channel described in §6 is a crowd
behaviour, not a boss voice, and it is the fourth consecutive chapter in which the voice column
turns out to belong to somebody other than the boss.
win_reward CARRIES A HISTORICAL LOG AND THE SCHEMA HAS NO FIELD FOR IT. "logs the historicalrestitution thread" is a real, dated, out-of-chapter payoff that surfaces at Ch 39 and at the Ch 59
revisit; it is not loot, not intel, and not a worldstate flag as any existing column models them.
The registry lane should decide whether historical-record payoffs get their own column.
§17.1 blockers but named: this sheet stages a real theft with an invented machine because the
corpus carries no account of the real one. It joins Phillipson and Munro-Hay [ethiopia.md §§ 6,
7], and it is a DEPTH blocker rather than a build blocker — the encounter is buildable now and
would be truer with it.
hangs, and a cut cable that whips are physics work, not animation work, and nothing in the current
wave list owns them. It is the same class of orphan as the civilian-routing system (BE_0008_S2) and
the crowd system (BE_0009), and all three are now blocking authored encounters.

a design sheet and nothing enforces it; a stray AOE, a physics prop, or a decal system that does not
know what it is drawing on will violate it silently. The same requirement will recur at every
protected site in the arc and it should be a build-time rule with a check, not a note.
