STATUS: PROPOSAL-TIER design sheet. It is the arc's FIRST TIER-A ANCHOR, the first capstone whose
whole subject is a man who UNDERSTANDS, and the human register's third and last pole — BE_0002's
hollowed man was deceived, BE_0007's duellist was uncorrupted, and this one took the bargain with
open eyes and lost nothing a photograph could find. It is also the first sheet in the lane whose
PART ECONOMY IS NOT ON THE BOSS'S BODY. It cites canon rows and writes none.

the zone row is explicit that the elevation comes from the encounter and the hold, not the water)

distinct motion signature, and it is his.

braces for the swell, because he reads it a half-second before it arrives — thirty years of
monsoon-timed trade written into the ankles.

looking at them, and §6 builds the fight's opening on exactly that difference.

archaeologists read the inevitable wrecks as what precipitated the need to build them
[swahili_coast.md § 1; SRC_00198, p. 13]. Hulls of the period were designed to flex over
shallow reefs and sand bars, but the sharpness of the coral limestone at Jiwe la Jahazi would
have caused catastrophic damage to a vessel carried across the crest by waves, and the island's
own oral tradition tells of a wreck there [swahili_coast.md § 1; SRC_00198, p. 9]. THE SEA

conversational register and its cessation, the four tell shapes, the stair-and-hatch staging, and
the escalation channels in §6.
THE HARDEST SUBJECT THE HUMAN REGISTER HAS PRODUCED, and the difficulty is worth naming exactly
because it is the character. BE_0002's hollowed man could carry A10 on his STATE — something had
been taken out of him and it showed. BE_0007's duellist could carry A4 and A5 on his TRAINING — a
lifetime of an art was written on his hands. Abdallah has neither. Nothing was taken from him that
he misses, and he has never worked with his hands. HE IS INTACT, HE IS COMFORTABLE, AND HE IS THE
WORST PERSON IN THE SLICE. An elevation grammar built for bodies has almost nothing to grip.
ONE-LINE READ: the only man on a burning, spray-swept deck whose clothes are still dry.
PRIMARY — A6 VRIL MANIFESTATION, read entirely as THE WORLD'S RESPONSE IN A RADIUS. The row's
intelligence_tier is SORCEROUS and the row's awareness is FULLY_AWARE, and this sheet takes those
two cells to mean one thing: every other vril-bearer in the arc so far has LEAKED, and he DIRECTS.
The mechanism, stated as the light law requires and containing no emission whatsoever: the sea
around him behaves as though it has been asked. The deck steadies under his feet on the roll that
throws everyone else. A sheet fills on a dead lull long enough for the escort to close. Spray that
arcs across the whole waist of the ship parts around one man and lands behind him. Water sheds off
him the way it sheds off oiled cloth, except that he is not wearing oiled cloth. NOTHING GLOWS,
nothing emits, nothing rims, and there is no aura — every read in this axis is water, cloth,
timber and balance, all of it lit by the same hard sun the rest of the fight is lit by, which is
what makes it survive a matinee-bright ocean where a glow would read as nothing at all.
SUPPORTING — A9 THE MARK, and the mark IS the primary axis made into one instantly readable
feature: HE IS DRY. On a deck where every other body is soaked to the skin, sooted from the rigging
fire, and marked with what the fight has done to it, one figure's cloth holds its colour. It reads
across the length of a ship, it reads in a wide shot, it reads in a thumbnail, and it needs no
second mark to help it. ONE MARK IS THE NUMBER and this sheet spends its one on this.
THE MARK'S INVERSION IS THE ENCOUNTER'S MOST IMPORTANT SINGLE READ, and §6 builds the non-HP win
route on it: the first time spray lands on him and the cloth goes dark, the fight has changed,
and the player learns that before any meter tells them.
SUPPORTING — A5 AGE AND STATE, RUN BACKWARDS. The axis usually writes a history onto a body —
healed breaks, wear, weather, accumulation. This subject's state is the ABSENCE of one. He is
fifty-odd years old on a coast that ages people hard and there is no weather on him: uncallused
hands on a man whose family fortune is rope and timber, no sun-damage on a man of the open ocean,
no scar, no limp, no old break set badly or well. Beside Nakhoda Binti Hassan — the same coast,
the same trade, the same decades — he looks like a man who has been kept indoors, and the two
bodies side by side say what he traded without a line of dialogue. The mechanism is the same one
as the primary axis: the world has been declining to touch him for a long time, and a body records
the absence of a life as clearly as it records a life.
SUPPORTING — A10 NEGATIVE SPACE, spent on the SHIP rather than the man, which is where this
encounter keeps everything that matters: THE HOLD THAT NEVER OPENS. His vessel is a merchant dhow
with a hatch nobody goes near, no cargo working on a trading deck, and a crew who do not look at
one part of their own ship. The row's own display name is built on it. A ship with a hole in its
working routine reads wrong to anyone who has spent the chapter learning what a working deck looks
like, and the protagonist has spent exactly that chapter doing exactly that under a captain who
teaches it — which makes the player, not a quest marker, the thing that notices.
MECHANISM SUMMARY, per the doctrine's requirement that no axis be decoration: A6 is directed vril
read as the world's response and nothing else; A9 is A6 localised to one high-contrast surface;
A5 is the absence of accumulated life; A10 is a break in a working ship's routine. EMISSION: NONE.
The blob test passes because there is nothing to blob.
carry, because this boss fails silently in exactly these four gaps:
the deck needs wetness accumulation that darkens cloth and clumps hair, because the mark is
read by CONTRAST and a dry man among dry men is invisible. This is a dependency on a wetness
system the character stack owes anyway (the ruled base-body-plus-layers architecture), and this
encounter is the first place in the slice where it is load-bearing rather than nice.
the water has to be seen arriving and not landing, or the read collapses into "the artist
forgot to wet him."
body whose stance does not correct while eight bodies correct together. This is animation-layer
work on shared ship motion, and it is the cheapest of the four to build and the most convincing.
his face has to sell ordinary — no sneer, no relish, no villain mouth. The most frightening
thing this design can do is deliver trade small-talk mid-duel with a pleasant expression, and
a face rig tuned for menace will destroy the encounter.
The rigging burns and drops, the escort dhows close and are broken, the boarding hazards persist
into phase 3 as arena state per the row's own escalation clause, and the hatch is a hinge with
a state. Every moving part of this encounter belongs to the vessel.
VERBS ARE BOARD-AND-STRIKE AND EXPOSE, axis 50/25/25. The row's counters, verbatim: rigging-fire →
cut-line traversal or a Water ability; the vril-charged cut → a shield-block or a read of its
telegraph; the crew pincer → a stagger-break or a gap-jump. The persona enumerates three signatures
— deck sweep, crew pincer, rigging ambush — each with two or more counters across Brute and
Trickery.
THE ENCOUNTER'S STRUCTURAL IDEA: THE BOSS IS NOT THE FIGHT UNTIL PHASE TWO. P1 is a ship being
fought, not a man; the player earns the duel by taking a vessel. That is what makes this a Tier-A
exam rather than a big health bar, and it is why the part economy lives where §9 says it lives.
| tell shape | body origin | one answer | counter class |
|---|---|---|---|
| the deck sweep — a wide low arc across the boarding line | full hip rotation, both feet planted, the whole body given to the arc | dodge; there is no meeting a committed sweep on a wet deck | dodge-only |
| the crew pincer — two of his men close the lane from both quarters | not his body at all: he steps BACK and the deck fills | stagger-break the near man or gap-jump the rail; the shape is other people, so the answer is space | parry/positional |
| the rigging ambush — a burning line comes down across the waist | the ship, not the man; the fire is already lit and the line is already parting | cut the line ahead of the fall, or answer it with a Water ability | environmental |
| the vril-charged cut — the same deck sweep with the sea in it | identical body origin to the deck sweep, and the water is GATHERED on the blade in frame first | shield-block, or read the gather and leave the arc | parry-class |
| the hatch guarded — he plants between the player and the hold | weight settles, the hand comes out from behind him | this is not an attack; it is the fight telling you what he is defending | information |
ONE SHAPE, ONE ANSWER. The deliberate cross-creature lesson lives in rows 1 and 4: THE SAME BODY
ORIGIN CARRIES A DIFFERENT ANSWER IN PHASE 3 THAN IN PHASE 2, and the distinguishing tell is not
the body but the GATHER — the element visual law's source-in-frame rule applied to a person, so
the water is seen coming to the blade before the arc starts. Without the gather in frame the two
rows collapse into a coin flip and the encounter fails the one-answer test; with it, the player is
being taught the arc's whole lesson about vril-charged versions of familiar things.
THE OPENING IS BUILT ON THE ROW'S OWN RECOGNITION CLAUSE. He knows the protagonist from a briefing,
not from sight, and the design makes that legible: the first thing he does is CHECK — he looks at
the ears, at the hands, at the height, comparing against something written, and the player can see
him doing it. It is the least supernatural thing in the chapter and it is the most frightening,
because a description can be copied and sent, and a vril-sight could not. Nothing about the family
that briefed him is on any surface (§7).
ESCALATION — the row's clause is evolve-not-swap: the deck-duel set persists into phase 3 as
vril-charged versions of the same cuts and the boarding hazards persist as arena state. This sheet
adds nothing to the moveset at any phase and gives the escalation an anatomical home on all four
channels the teacher names:
not defending the ship; he is defending the hatch, and a player who reads the retreat's direction
learns where the hold is before the fight tells them. P3 opens on the first time he plants and
does not give.
his does not, which is a legibility problem the design turns into the escalation: the single
visible breath he takes in P3 is the only crack in him the encounter ever offers.
weather, freight rates and the state of the season, mid-duel, pleasantly. The register never
rises. The escalation channel is that in P3 HE STOPS TALKING, and the silence is louder than any
boss roar in the slice.
and it arrives with the gather in frame.
OPENER AND VARIANTS: the root is THE DECK SWEEP — the widest, slowest, most legible thing he
throws, and the first thing the player sees on boarding. The crew pincer is that sweep's spacing
lesson with other bodies in it; the vril-charged cut is the sweep with the sea in it; the rigging
ambush is the sweep the ship throws. One root, four readings, taught in that order.
BREAKABLE PARTS — AND THIS ROW IS THE LANE'S FIRST CASE WHERE THEY ARE NOT ON THE BOSS. The row's
own win_reward names them: part-break the ESCORT DHOWS and the RIGGING into an HP finish. The
part economy is the vessel and its consorts, and the region page supplies the physics for free —
hulls of this period were built to FLEX over reef and sand bar, and it is the sharpness of the
coral limestone that kills them [SRC_00198, p. 9]. So the parts and their currencies:
threshold is a hull opened on the crest, break event is a vessel taking the reef and going down
by the head, permanent subtraction is one crew pincer's worth of bodies removed from the live
moveset for the rest of the encounter, legibility gain is a quieter deck where his tells read.
threshold is the burning line parted, break event is the yard coming down across the waist,
permanent subtraction is the rigging ambush removed from the live moveset, legibility gain is
the whole upper frame cleared so the deck sweep reads against sky.
is FORK_CH08_A, and §7 owns it.
CHAIN-METER BODY STATE — the EXPOSE route is the non-HP win and it needs a body state, because the
row carries no pip_count and a win route the player cannot feel is not a route. THE CLOTH IS THE
METER. As the expose route advances — the hold faced, the evidence assembled, the knowing bargain
put to him with the ship's own cargo as the proof — the world stops declining to touch him. The
spray gets nearer. It lands on the deck at his feet. It lands on him. When his cloth is as dark as
everyone else's, the vessel is resolved, and a player who never looks at a HUD will have watched
the entire second win condition happen on a man's shoulder.
RELOCATION AND TURF: the encounter MOVES, and the row's arena-state clause is why. P1 is open
water and reef; P2 is his deck; P3 is the same deck with the wreckage of P1 and P2 still on it. He
never leaves his own ship, and that is characterisation rather than a limit: a man who owns the
ground he stands on does not step off it.
WIN AND LOSS, both rewarding per the row: WIN by part-break into an HP finish, or by expose-pacify
— both routes complete and both are build-agnostic. LOSS is not a fail-wall; the row rules that he
speaks of things the protagonist half-hears and cannot place, and the unease deepens. The mystery
advances on win and on death alike, which is the only honest way to run a boss whose real payload
is something the player is not allowed to understand yet.
waganga healers and the Sayyid lineage as such are never combat targets; combat routes through
the man and his fully-aware vril [CH_08 § Protected-chapter combat framing; HL_0002,
HL_0006]. The §17.1 collective line is untouched because he is not standing in for anyone: the
chapter puts a positive bearer of the same sharifian elite on screen in the honoured Kilwa
Sultan, and the coast's own healers, captain, scholar and elder are the protagonist's allies
through the entire arc of the fight.
and clean while the deck does not, and there is a way to build that read which would be a §17.1
failure: staging his cleanliness as RITUAL PURITY, or seating the read in dress-as-devotion, or
letting the camera find it during or adjacent to a religious act would make his corruption
legible THROUGH a marker of the faith — which is precisely what the persona's care-note forbids.
RULED FOR THIS SHEET: the dry mark is seated in PHYSICS and never in piety. It is spray declining
to land, shown by spray visibly arriving and parting; it is never grooming, never garment
quality, never washing, never a prayer-adjacent frame, and no religious practice of his is
depicted at all. The mark is kept in full and its SEAT is moved — rename-and-reframe, which is
the doctrine's tool, and not removal, which is not.
aware_vessel, care_tier ELEVATED, defeat_protected FALSE. He is killable andthe encounter is a real lethal fight, per the standing violence law — lethal violence against
human antagonists is core, §17.1 protection is collective, and an individual antagonist who
belongs to a protected community is not thereby unkillable. Nothing in this sheet softens him.
sheet holds three lines about them. First, they are staged as persons with faces, postures and
attention — a hold of individuals who look back — and never as cargo texture, set-dressing or
spectacle; the chapter's own carrier, Rasheed (CHAR_0061), is a man with his own road toward
refuge [CH_08 §10 CH08_B10; FORK_CH08_A]. Second, the CORROSIVE OPTION STAYS REACHABLE: the fork
authors leave-the-hold-sealed with no neutral middle, and removing it to spare the player the
choice would be the defang, not the care. Third, nothing about their condition is rendered for
effect — the camera does not linger, there is no violence performed on them on screen, and their
freeing is a door opening and people walking out into daylight.
material culture, and he must not be raw-generated with negative prompts as the control. The
Kilwa architecture, the mosque and any inscription in frame are REFERENCE_BUILT per the region
page's own §17.1 rule, and no sacred building is staged as an arena.
thing: the seat of the dry mark moved off ritual purity, which is a reframe that keeps the whole
read and costs the design nothing — recorded here as required rather than because it was a
softening. (2) The devil's-advocate direction, calibrated against over-conservatism: is this
encounter timid anywhere? The pass found one live risk and rules against it. THE RISK IS THAT THE
SLAVE-TRADE MATERIAL GETS HANDLED SO CAREFULLY IT DISAPPEARS — a hold that is mentioned, gated
behind a fade, and never actually faced. That would be the omission error the standing
calibration names as the more costly one, and it would also break the fight, because the EXPOSE
win route needs the hold to be REAL evidence the player has stood in. RULED: the player goes down
into the hold, in the middle of a boss fight, and it is quiet down there. The weight is carried by
proximity and by the people being people, not by depicted brutality, and that is a harder and
more honest beat than either the fade or the spectacle.
the conversational register and its cessation, the give-ground-to-the-hatch posture channel, the
briefing-check opening, the five tell shapes and the unworn-body read are INVENTED BY THIS SHEET

string in this sheet carries a House-of-Velheim name, family reference, or pattern token. The
design layer holds NW_0007 Cat-5 FULLY_AWARE; the PLAYER receives a hostile recognition and an
unformed unease and nothing else [HL_0035, HL_0103, ruled Q1]. Three specific holds: the
briefing he checks the protagonist against is a piece of paper the player never reads; his death
clause is authored as things half-heard and unplaceable and this sheet proposes no line for it,
because a written line is exactly where a pattern leaks; and his continuous P2 talk is about
freight and weather ON PURPOSE — it is in-character, it is chilling, and it is structurally
incapable of leaking anything. The row's display name is checked and clears: "whose hold never
opens" carries no antagonist token. Cassius Velheim does not appear and the Grand Sage is dark.

and part four both assume breakable regions on a BODY; this row's own win_reward puts them on
the escort dhows and the rigging. The doctrine needs a VEHICLE-AND-ARENA part economy clause: a
boss whose parts are the ship he stands on, with the same three currencies (permanent moveset
subtraction, legibility gain, a material the economy wants) measured in silhouette fractions of
the ARENA rather than of the creature. Ch 33's caravel and the Ch 55 vessels inherit this
directly.
hitzone_parts EMPTY, AND THIS IS THE FIFTH INSTANCE OF THE SCHEMA GAP AND THE FIRST OF A NEWKIND. On BE_0005_S3, BE_0006_S2, BE_0006_S3 and BE_0007 the emptiness meant "complete" or "no
part economy exists." Here it means "the parts exist, they are named in this row's own
win_reward cell, and they do not live in a column shaped for body regions." One empty column
now carries four distinct meanings across the lane and a gate still cannot tell them apart.
phase_trigger, escalation_vector, phase_voice_array EMPTY on a row with three authoredphases, an authored evolve-not-swap escalation, and a phase voice whose defining feature is that
it STOPS. A voice channel whose escalation is cessation may not be expressible in an array column.
has_nonkill_path and pip_count EMPTY while win_condition reads REDUCE;EXPOSE. The exposeroute is a second win condition, it is build-agnostic by the row's own reward text, and it has no
pip or meter representation anywhere in the schema. This sheet gives it a body state (the cloth)
because it needed one; the registry lane should decide whether EXPOSE routes are chain-metered.
T0_Boss_Attack_Rail 0 rows; five tell shapes with single answers and a named cross-phasereuse-with-a-different-answer case are waiting, and the reuse case is the rail's first real test.

built: the CORRUPTED-AND-DECEIVED (BE_0002 — equipment, craft, state, and a hollow), the
UNCORRUPTED (BE_0007 — equipment, craft, and carriage only), and the CORRUPTED-AND-KNOWING
(BE_0008 — where even the state axis inverts, and the elevation is the world's behaviour around
a body rather than anything on it). The third pole is the one the doctrine did not anticipate.
([POPULATE→T0_Vehicle_Registry @ VH_004]) and no bestiary home, yet this encounter's part
economy lives on them. The registry lane may want the boss row to reference vehicle parts
directly rather than through prose.
