STATUS: PROPOSAL-TIER design sheet. It is the lane's FIRST PLACE-BOUND BEING — a boss that cannot
travel and is therefore MOVED — the first whose body is an entire living structure rather than an
animal, and the second sheet in the lane whose largest finding is a CITATION GAP it refuses to fill
by invention (BE_0006_S1 was the first, and the discipline is inherited from it deliberately). It
cites canon rows and writes none.

THE BEING HAS NO ANIMAL BASE AND THE DOCTRINE STILL BINDS: start from a real body. This sheet's
answer is that the real body is THE REEF, and it is a better anatomical foundation than any animal
on the row because a coral reef is not scenery — it is a colonial organism with a growth
architecture, a mechanical skeleton, real flex behaviour, and a documented pathology that reads
white at a kilometre.
archetype census covers a body that is a colony and does not travel.
mound of calcium-carbonate skeleton laid down over centuries, with a living tissue veneer a few
millimetres thick over it. It does not articulate at all and it is not supposed to. It is the
spirit's PLACE, and the tradition's own word for the place is what §3 supplies.
one part of a reef that genuinely BENDS. Real gorgonian mechanics are the whole reason this
creature can move without lying: the axial skeleton flexes in the plane of the water's flow and
resists across it, which is why sea fans stand broadside to the current and sway in one plane.
growth, and the fine silt that a disturbed reef lifts into the water in a cloud.

passively under flow and are what the creature's silhouette is mostly made of.
own spec: ±14° in the flow plane, ±4° across it, with no axial twist at any joint. Cumulative
travel across a 9-segment arm is therefore large while every individual joint stays small, which
is exactly how a sea fan produces a big sweep out of a stiff material. THE SOLVER REFUSES ANY POSE
OUTSIDE THIS: a coral arm that bends like a tentacle is the failure state, and it is the failure
state precisely because it would throw away the one thing that makes this creature read as coral.
arms' reach and the water it moves; the core never travels, and §4 makes that constraint the
design's whole spine rather than a limitation to work around.
first read of this creature is that there was no creature there a minute ago.
THIS IS THE SHEET'S LARGEST BLOCK AND ITS MOST IMPORTANT ONE, because the region page ran a literal
term census across all 472 chunks of its processed shelf and published the result, and that census
governs everything a design sheet is allowed to say here.
in specific places called mizimu, singular mzimu, WHICH ARE MARKED BY NATURAL FEATURES — caves,
stones, trees or thickets — and small huts are often built for them; ritual interaction happens at
the mizimu, and the main feature of the practice is THE SACRIFICE OF FOOD OR CLOTH
[swahili_coast.md § 5; SRC_00313, p. 1]. The being is bound to a PLACE and the place is marked
by a natural feature. On a reef, the natural feature is the coral head, and §2 built the body out
of it.
spirits are given their due, and in return they secure the fertility of the land and the people
and aid their human relations in sickness and personal trouble [SRC_00313, p. 2]. Every citizen
inherits relations with local spirits through their descent group, so belonging to the town and
belonging to its spirits are the same fact [SRC_00313, p. 2].
controlled access to land through the rituals required for appropriating local resources, and the
spirits and their experts had to be given their dues three times in the millet cycle AND AGAIN IN
CONNECTION WITH HUNTING AND WITH NET AND TRAP FISHING [SRC_00313, p. 3 and p. 3 n5]. PERMISSION TO
TAKE FROM THIS WATER IS A RITUAL TRANSACTION — the creature roster's own CR_0043 care register
says so in as many words, and §4 spends it.
count as UGANGA, religious practices of healing, as against UCHAWI, religious practices of
harming — and the record is careful about how clean that line is. It is generally suspected that a
practitioner of uganga can practise uchawi as well, there are no public accusations, nobody admits
to uchawi, and BOTH EMPLOY THE SAME MEANS TO OPPOSITE ENDS, namely plants, spirits, and the Koran,
with the Koran thought to be the most effective in both cases [SRC_00313, p. 2]. Harm and healing
are two branches of one craft, not a foreign evil against a native good. §6 makes that the
encounter's central legibility problem and §7 makes it the care solution.
practices are classified as mila — local, traditional custom — as opposed to dini, orthodox Islam;
yet Islamic elements including prayers to Allah and recitation of the Koran are part of most of
them, and most people take part in the mila practices and still consider themselves good Muslims.
Representatives of reformist Islam criticise the spirit rituals as idolatrous, which the region
page carries as A LIVE INTERNAL DEBATE OF THE COMMUNITY rather than as a verdict [SRC_00313, p. 2].
REEF-CORAL CAUSEWAYS, which themselves support the mangrove growth that marks the reef edge, and
the archaeologists read the inevitable wrecks as what precipitated the need to build them
[swahili_coast.md § 1; SRC_00198, p. 13]. THE SAFE LANE IS LITERALLY A BUILT THING, and it can be
read, lost, or broken. Hulls of the period were designed to flex over shallow reefs and sand bars,
but the sharpness of the coral limestone at Jiwe la Jahazi would have caused catastrophic damage to
a vessel carried across the crest by waves, and the island's own oral tradition tells of a wreck
there [SRC_00198, p. 9].

ZERO occurrences: waganga, mganga, ngoma, jini, majini, Qadiriyya, Shadhiliyya, Ajami, taarab,
tendi, nakhoda, mchawi. Shetani returns ONCE, in the Makunduchi passage cited above. The positive
control on the same census returns wa-ungwana 3, kokoto 2, uganga 4, uchawi 5, wavyale 4, mtepe 3,
mila 7, dini 4, Husuni 37 [swahili_coast.md § 5]. WHAT FOLLOWS, APPLIED STRICTLY BY THIS SHEET:
waganga and ngoma ya majini are SPINE CANON and are consumed as spine canon. This sheet usesthem exactly where canon uses them and NOWHERE ELSE, and it authors no content for the rite — no
liturgy, no instrument list, no invocation, no ritual sequence, no possession choreography, no
mask or costume. The rite belongs to its practitioners; the player HOLDS A LINE beside it (§6).
mchawi is consumed from the registry row and is not re-authored. The region page's sharperobligation is inherited verbatim: NO PLAYER-FACING STRING LABELS PEMBA A SORCERY ISLAND, the
harming and healing branches are one coast-wide craft rather than a place's property, and the
Pemba attachment rides the registry row alone.
in the tradition's own attested CATEGORY with its attested plural — shetani, mashetani — and
gives it no species-name, no personal name, and no epithet the record does not supply.
(Mackenrodt, Swahili Spirit Possession and Islamic Healing; Giles, Swahili spirit cults), which
is the same acquisition the spine already names as its substrate source. UNTIL IT LANDS, THIS
SHEET'S VOCABULARY CEILING IS THE CENSUS.
the DEBT-TRANSFER mechanism in §4, the bleach-line marking, the forged dues-token in a ship's
rigging, the four tell shapes, the two-phase reading order, and the specific anatomy in §2.
ONE-LINE READ: a piece of the reef that has been made to collect a debt it is owed by somebody else.
THE DESIGN PROBLEM, stated before the axes because it is what selects them: a spirit of PLACE cannot
leave its place, and the encounter is about SHIPS being foundered out on the crest. Something has to
explain how a bound being reaches a hull, and the cheap answers — it swims, it possesses, it
manifests wherever it likes — all destroy the one cited fact that makes this being what it is. The
expensive answer is the design, and the record supplies it whole: the relation is a RECIPROCAL DEBT,
dues are owed for taking from this water, and a practitioner of the harming branch uses THE SAME
MEANS TO THE OPPOSITE END. So the mchawi does not summon anything and does not move anything. HE
FORGES A DEBT. He ties a dues-token into a marked ship's rigging in another vessel's name, and the
reef is thereby owed by a hull that never asked. The spirit is not evil in this encounter and it is
not deceived either — it is doing precisely what the relation says it does, against a claim that was
written by a liar. That is why the row's win_condition reads PURGE;FREE and why the reward frees
the reef rather than clearing it: THE SPIRIT IS THE SECOND VICTIM AND THE MCHAWI IS THE ENEMY.
None of which makes it safe. It founders ships and drowns swimmers, the fishermen are not wrong to
fear it, and the reef zone's ambient_threat HIGH is the ground rather than a difficulty dial
[CH_08 body prose; swahili_coast.md § 1]. §7 runs the anti-timid pass on exactly this point.
PRIMARY — A8 MATERIAL SUBSTITUTION, and it is the axis the doctrine wrote for this creature. The
body is calcium-carbonate skeleton, living tissue veneer, gorgonin rod, encrusting shell, and lifted
sediment. MECHANISM, per the light law's list of non-emitting reads: it is read by OCCLUSION (a mass
that eats the sun-shafts through the water column), by WETTING (everything about it is wet, and the
one thing that reads dry-white is the pathology below), by REFRACTION and the silt cloud it lifts,
and by SILHOUETTE against water already lit. The articulation constraint the doctrine puts on this
axis is honoured in full: the substitution admits joints because gorgonin genuinely bends, and the
joints it admits are the ones a real gorgonian has and no others.
SUPPORTING — A5 AGE AND CORRUPTION STATES, and this creature gets the axis nearly free because a
massive coral colony is CENTURIES OLD AS A MATTER OF BIOLOGY. Nothing needs inventing to make this
thing older than the town: the core's growth banding is a record of the water it has stood in, its
lower flanks carry dead skeleton overgrown by later generations, and it is encrusted with everything
that has ever settled on it. This axis does the doctrine's "existed before the quest and will after"
work more literally than any subject in the lane.
SUPPORTING — A9 THE MARK, which is the corruption half of A5 localised into ONE feature, and the
mark is BLEACHING. The mechanism is real and it is the best gift this subject gives the design:
coral bleaches under stress by expelling the symbiotic algae in its tissue, and what goes white is
the calcium-carbonate skeleton showing through a tissue veneer that has lost its colour. It is not a
glow and it is not a paint layer — it is a body under load, showing its bones. The forged debt runs
through this creature as a network of BLEACH LINES, stark white, hard-edged, and legible at any
distance in any light including the flat overhead sun of a tropical noon, which is where a glow
would read as nothing at all. ONE MARK IS THE NUMBER and this creature spends its one here.
A10 NEGATIVE SPACE — CONSIDERED AND DECLINED, recorded per the budget discipline. The tempting
version is that the water goes wrong in a body-shaped absence where it passes. It is declined for
two reasons: this creature does not travel, so a moving absence contradicts the primary design fact;
and the mark already owns the encounter's whole read, so a second identity feature would take from
it rather than add. Four axes were available and three are spent.
THE GLOW REFUSAL, RECORDED EXPLICITLY BECAUSE THE TEMPTATION HERE IS REAL AND FACTUAL: corals do
fluoresce, the proteins are real, and a fluorescing reef monster would be easy to justify with a
citation. IT IS REFUSED. Water is not one of the three emitting families, self-lit reads are the
banned class the element visual law closes, and the honest reason is a design one rather than a
compliance one — a fluorescent read costs this creature its afternoon. Bleach-white against reef
colour reads at noon, at dusk, at depth and in a thumbnail; fluorescence reads in exactly one
lighting condition and evaporates in the rest.
arena's own floor feature. Every arm attaches to it at a named socket on the mound's upper flank,
and the weight of an arm's sweep passes DOWN THE ARM INTO THE CORE and then into the seabed — the
creature never falls over because it is not standing on anything.
and ±4° across it, no axial twist. Each arm's socket is a fixed base with no rotation of its own,
which means an arm's whole reach is the SUM of nine small bends and its sweep is therefore
unavoidably SLOW and unavoidably TELEGRAPHED — the anatomy is doing the fight-legibility work for
free, and §6 does not have to add a wind-up because the body already is one.
and they are the thing that makes the creature look like reef rather than like a machine.
that hangs, drifts with the current, and settles. It is the encounter's fog of war and it is also
its clock.
tentacles, no ball joints, no anthropomorphic upper body. The being has no face and needs none —
its attention is read from WHICH ARM MOVES.
VERBS ARE BANISH AND TRAVERSE, axis 30/45/25, PUZZLE-FORWARD. The row's counters, verbatim: read the
kusi/kaskazi timing to find the safe lane; hold the warded threshold with the waganga to break the
mchawi's binding. Two phases, evolve-not-swap: the row's own clause says phase two TIGHTENS THE
HAZARD WINDOWS AND THE SHETANI'S FORMS rather than adding attacks.
THE ENCOUNTER'S STRUCTURAL IDEA: THE CREATURE IS NOT THE TARGET. The player fights a reef, and wins
by taking a piece of cloth out of a ship's rigging and breaking a man's claim. Every mechanic below
exists to make that legible without anyone saying it.
| tell shape | body origin | one answer | counter class |
|---|---|---|---|
| the sweep — one arm's nine joints load in sequence from the socket outward | a visible travelling bend running the length of one branch, slow because the anatomy makes it slow | leave that arm's arc; the sum of nine small bends has a fixed reach and it is readable | dodge-only |
| the draw — the whole colony's fans set against the current and the water pulls toward the core | no arm moves at all; the FANS turn, all of them, together | swim across the pull, never against it; the monsoon-timing read gives the lane | the puzzle lane |
| the lift — the mantle rises and the water goes blind | the core's flank shrugs; sediment comes up in a column | hold position and wait it out, or clear it with a Water ability; moving inside the cloud is how crews die | environmental |
| the collection — an arm reaches for a HULL rather than for the player | the arm that moves is the one nearest the marked ship, every time | this is not an attack on you; it is the fight telling you which ship is marked | information |
| the working — the mchawi's hands move, and the water answers or it does not | identical in shape to the healers' hands beside him | read the DIRECTION of the answer, not the gesture; the bleach line brightens for harm and dulls for healing | the one-answer rule, §6 note |
THE ONE-ANSWER TEST, AND THE HARDEST CALL IN THIS SHEET. Row five is a shape shared by an enemy and
by allies, which is exactly the coin-flip the doctrine bans — and it is also the cited truth of the
tradition, that both branches employ the same means to opposite ends [SRC_00313, p. 2]. THE
RESOLUTION: the TELL is not the gesture and never was. The gesture is identical by design and the
player is explicitly taught not to read it; what carries the single answer is the WORLD'S RESPONSE,
and the response is the bleach line, which brightens as harm is worked and dulls as the ward holds.
One shape, one answer, and the answer lives on the creature rather than on the human. This is also
the encounter's whole thesis stated as a mechanic — you cannot tell a healer from a harmer by
watching them work, so you watch what the work DOES — and it rhymes with the capstone, where a
respected merchant is indistinguishable from an honest one until you look in his hold.
BREAKABLE PARTS — AND THEY ARE CLEARED, NOT SMASHED, WHICH IS A DISTINCTION THE PART ECONOMY CAN
CARRY. The breakable regions are the BLEACH LINES, and each is a forged claim written into the
colony. There are five, one per primary arm, and each occupies roughly the length of its arm in
silhouette — the highest silhouette fraction of any part economy in the slice, because the mark is
the creature's whole read.
takes to complete a sweep. Colour returns behind it. It is visible from anywhere in the arena.
creature is not being disarmed, it is being unburdened — so the fight does not get easier so much
as it gets CLEANER, which is the honest form of the currency here.
unmissable.
cloth, tied in another vessel's name. It is evidence, and evidence is the exact currency the
capstone's EXPOSE win route runs on. See §9: this sheet proposes the strand and does not claim it,
because canon names the HOLD as that route's evidence and this would be an addition.
ESCALATION, on the four channels, with the row's tighten-don't-add clause obeyed:
core, arms drawn in. It is a body under load doing what a body under load does, and it reads as
the creature being hurt by the thing it is being made to do rather than as it getting angry.
arms move with the swell. In P2 they move OFF it, half a beat wrong, and a player who has spent
the chapter learning monsoon timing feels the wrongness before they can name it.
the WATER: the reef's ordinary noise floor drops away in P2 and leaves the sound of the ward.
THE OPENER AND ITS VARIANTS: the root is THE SWEEP, the most legible and least punishing thing the
creature does, taught in the first thirty seconds of the reef run at CH08_B05 where nothing is at
stake. The draw is the sweep's timing lesson at colony scale; the collection is the sweep aimed
somewhere else; the lift is the sweep's cover. One root, four readings.
THE WARD, AND WHAT THIS SHEET WILL NOT AUTHOR. The row's second counter is to hold the warded
threshold WITH the waganga. Mechanically the player's job is to keep a line — bodies and hazards off
a fixed pocket of water while the practitioners work, against a creature whose whole attack grammar
is reach and current. That is a defend-the-position fight with a moving floor, and it is designed
here in full. THE RITE ITSELF IS NOT DESIGNED HERE AT ALL: no liturgy, no drum pattern, no
invocation, no sequence, no trance, no costume, no mask. The practitioners run their own rite, the
camera does not study it, and the player never performs it. The gap is named rather than filled and
it routes to the Section-16 acquisition, exactly as BE_0006_S1 did with the Tovil.
RELOCATION AND TURF: none, and it is the design. The creature cannot leave and does not try. What
relocates is the PLAYER and the SHIPS, and the arena's own geography does the work the doctrine
usually asks a boss to do — the reef-coral causeway is a built safe lane that can be read, lost or
broken [SRC_00198, p. 13], and the crest at Jiwe la Jahazi will open a flexed hull [SRC_00198, p. 9].
WIN: the crews recovered, the reef freed of the binding, and the sea-jini and uchawi-uganga lore.
LOSS: the row rules it logs the hazard pattern for the retry, which is the correct shape for a
puzzle-forward encounter — you leave knowing more about the water than you arrived with, and no
fail-wall stands.
protected non-targets and are the protagonist's ALLIES for the whole of this encounter [CH_08 §
Protected-chapter combat framing; HL_0002, HL_0003, HL_0123]. The being fought is the
tradition's OWN condemned malevolent spirit and the craft opposed is the tradition's OWN condemned
harming branch, named as such by the record that attests both [SRC_00313, p. 2]. Nothing in this
encounter is a claim about the faith, and the faith is not the thing the protagonist sees through
— the region page's own sentence, and this sheet is built inside it.
island community. No player-facing string on this sheet's authority calls it a sorcery island,
none attributes the harming branch to the island as a property, and the harming-and-healing pair is
handled as ONE COAST-WIDE CRAFT throughout. The mchawi is ONE MAN. The spine's own beat text is
already explicit that Pemba's own healers and community are not implicated and actively oppose him
[CH_08 §10 CH08_B04], and this sheet stages that: the people who help the protagonist trace him
are from the same island he is.
rituals as idolatrous as a live internal debate of the community [SRC_00313, p. 2]. RULED FOR THIS
SHEET: no character in this encounter declares who is right, the game takes no position, and the
fact that most participants take part in the mila practices and consider themselves good Muslims
is simply the world the encounter happens in. A game that resolved a living community's internal
religious argument in a boss fight would have done something considerably worse than getting a
detail wrong.
ill-intentioned, feared, warded — and it is never softened and never Hollywood-monstered. The
mchawi is a sorcerous-tier human antagonist and is fully a combat target.
template — that is the exact WRONG ROUTE finding the doctrine was written to catch, and it is a
live risk here because the subject is made of real coral and a reference search will return
nature-documentary reef footage all day. It routes to ATTENDED_DESIGN from a judged concept plate.
The waganga are human members of a living tradition: ATTENDED_DESIGN or REFERENCE_BUILT, never raw
generation with negative prompts as the control, and no rite is depicted (above).
is a sea-monster whose win condition is FREEING it a defang? The doctrine's own defang tell is
that making a climactic opponent PASSIVE is the failure, and Josh has ruled the exact case —
protecting a sea monster is over the line into rated-G. THE PASS RULES THAT THIS IS NOT A DEFANG,
on four grounds. (1) NOTHING WAS REDUCED. The row arrived PURGE;FREE and this sheet did not soften
a kill into a release; it built the reason the row already carried. (2) THE CREATURE IS LETHAL AND
STAYS LETHAL. It founders ships and drowns crews on screen, its zone is ambient_threat HIGH, its
cover mechanic — the silt lift — is specifically how crews die, and no beat in this sheet stages
it as pitiable. (3) THE FREEING IS THE HARDER WIN. It requires the monsoon-timing read, the safe
lane, the marked hull identified from a tell that is not aimed at you, the token recovered from a
rigging under a creature's reach, and a defended threshold held to a finish. A health bar would be
easier. (4) THE DEVIL'S-ADVOCATE DIRECTION, calibrated against over-conservatism, asks whether the
bolder design is to let the player simply kill the reef-spirit. It is rejected on canon rather than
on taste: the row's own win condition is PURGE;FREE and the win reward frees the reef, so killing
it would be the sheet overruling the registry — which is the one thing this lane is forbidden to
do. The boldness went instead into the drownings, which are real and are shown.
is a REDUCTION and it is recorded as one. The devil's-advocate reading is that inventing a rite
would be more playable and more spectacular. It is rejected because the failure mode is specific
and known: supplying unattested vocabulary and invented liturgy inside living-tradition substrate
is the authenticity failure §17.1 exists to prevent, the region page ran the census that proves
this shelf cannot support it, and the source that would settle it is already on the MUST-ACQUIRE
list. The reduction is a TIMED one — it expires when Mackenrodt and Giles land — and it costs the
encounter nothing, because the player's job at the threshold was never to perform the rite.
bleach-line marking and its clearing, the colonial-sessile anatomy and its ROM, the five tell
shapes, the surge-off-beat escalation and the silt-cloud cover are INVENTED BY THIS SHEET and are
the game's own. The mizimu-and-natural-feature cosmology, the food-or-cloth sacrifice, the
reciprocal dues and their fishing occasion, the uganga/uchawi branch pair and its same-means
clause, the mila/dini classification and the reformist criticism, the reef causeways and the Jiwe
la Jahazi crest are CITED.
reference or pattern token. The mchawi is in Abdallah's pay and the money is traceable to a
merchant and stops there — the player learns that one man paid another man, which is the whole
chapter's ceiling. No character speculates about who pays the merchant.

not be generated from a photographic-wildlife or nature-documentary reef template, because that
route is exactly what produced the documentary lizard this doctrine exists to prevent. PLATE F
carries NO figures and no ritual by the §7 ruling; the practitioners are not staged, their rite is
not depicted, and no plate in this set contains a religious act, object or building.
quadruped, biped-beast, winged, aquatic, humanoid, arthropod and composite, and none of them
describes a body that is a colony, does not travel, and articulates in one plane only. The census
and the per-archetype anatomy table both need the row, and Ch 48's cenote and any coral, fungal or
grove-bodied being downstream will need it too.
hitzone_partsassumes destruction; this creature's parts are freed, colour returns, and the creature is BETTER
after each one. A part economy with a restorative break event is a real design shape (the doctrine's
A5 corruption register implies it) and nothing in the registry can express it.
hitzone_parts EMPTY — the sixth instance of the schema gap in the slice, and a new meaning again:here the parts exist, are designed, have silhouette fractions, and are NOT hit zones. Four distinct
meanings now sit behind one empty column across BE_0005_S3, BE_0006_S2, BE_0006_S3, BE_0007,
BE_0008 and this row.
phase_trigger, escalation_vector, phase_voice_array EMPTY on a row with two authored phasesand an authored tighten-don't-add escalation whose voice channel is SILENCE and whose breath
channel is the SWELL. A phase-voice array cannot hold "the reef's noise floor drops."
T0_Boss_Attack_Rail 0 rows; five tell shapes wait, one of them the lane's first deliberateSHARED-SHAPE case where the disambiguator is the world's response rather than the actor's body.
The rail's counter-class coverage gate will need to express that or it will read this row as a
one-answer violation.
EXPOSE win route, but canon names the HOLD as that route's evidence [CH_08 §10 CH08_B11], and
CH08_B06's authored outputs are the freed reef, the recovered crews and the waganga standing. The
strand is boarded for the spine lane to accept or refuse; nothing in this sheet depends on it.
the spine's named substrate for Ch 8 and the region page's named verify route for waganga, ngoma,
majini, mchawi and tendi. This sheet adds the practical consequence: the ward beat cannot be
authored past a defend-the-line shape without them, and the same gap shape already stopped
BE_0006_S1 in Sri Lanka. TWO CONSECUTIVE CHAPTERS HAVE NOW HIT THE CORPUS EDGE ON THE SAME KIND OF
SOURCE — the specialist ethnography of a living ritual practice — which is a purchasing signal
rather than a design one.
CR_0043's care register already encodes the ritual-transaction fishing rule that this sheet builtits antagonist mechanism from, and no creature row exists for the reef-spirit itself (correctly —
the boss slate is spine authority and the region page declines to mint one). If the registry lane
ever wants a CR_ row for it, the anatomy in §2 is the input.
half-submerged encounter, with a vertical arena, buoyancy, current, and a silt-based fog of war,
and none of that is in the engagement-ledger wave's scope as written.
