BE_0007_S2 — the dvarapala of the gate: the guardian that never moves, and the threshold that does

CANON SUBORDINATION — this document is PROPOSAL-TIER: it serves canon and never outranks it.
The canon: the CVD · the T1 foundation docs · the T0 registries (registries/) · the spine
(docs/spine/CH_*.md) · the region pages (_source/02_Tier_2_Region_Pages/). Authority order: docs/DOC_MAP.md § 0.
Canon served (scanned from this document's own citations — widen it by hand where it is thin):

STATUS: PROPOSAL-TIER design sheet. It is the arc's first formal DVARAPALA content — a class that

receives LINK_0129 from the Ch 5 Borobudur gate-guardians and feeds LINK_0130 toward West Africa at

Ch 12, so the decisions here propagate. Its one binding constraint is the row's own: the dvarapala is

the tradition's own guardian and is NEVER trope-horror. It cites canon rows and writes none.

at a temple threshold, and this sheet's first and most consequential decision is that IT IS AND

REMAINS A CARVING.

precinct — a powerful figure with the attributes its tradition gives it, carved in stone, and in the

Madurai register polychrome rather than bare. At the Thanjavur gate a carved door-guardian holds the

threshold in the same office [CH_07 §10 CH07_B04].

will not invent an articulation for it. The doctrine's blob test asks whether every added structure

names its attachment, joint chain and ROM; the answer here is that nothing is added, so the test

passes with a null set rather than with a claim. See §5, where the doctrine tension this creates is

named rather than hidden.

encounter, and that constancy is the design.

3. lore_source

PERIMETER and all who enter have direct access, unlike major high-caste Kerala temples where the

deities stand at the centre of a series of enclosures and physical access is restricted to the

ritual specialist considered pure enough to approach [south_india.md § 5; SRC_00262]. The region

page draws the conclusion itself, and this encounter is one half of it: MADURAI IS THE THRESHOLD

THAT MUST BE EARNED, and the kalari one chapter-beat later is the sacred space that is open by

design. Two honest models of sacred access, both real, in one region.

Meenakshi is honoured and inviolate and is never a target; the dvarapala is the tradition's own

guardian and is never trope-horror [CH_07 §10 CH07_B02, § Protected-chapter combat framing;

HL_0004; HL_0005].

design in one clause — "a gate the stone door-guardians watch — honored ground, entered in the right

bearing, never taken" [CH_07 body prose].

guardian's office is documented; a combat behaviour for it would be an invention, and an invention

laid on a living temple's threshold guardian is exactly what "never trope-horror" forbids.

bearing-attunement mechanic, the four tell shapes, and the narrowing window.

4. elevation

ONE-LINE READ: a gate you can see straight through, with a carved guardian on either side that does

not move, and air between them that is heavier than the air behind you.

PRIMARY — A1 SCALE BAND at ARENA: the body sets the arena's scale. The dvarapala's height establishes

the gate, the gate establishes the approach, and the whole encounter is staged in the volume the

carving defines. The band's required physical consequence is stated: nothing this large moves, and

this one is honest about it — the mass is the argument for the stillness rather than a constraint to

work around.

SUPPORTING — A6 VRIL MANIFESTATION AS WORLD RESPONSE, and this is where the encounter's action lives,

strictly inside the light law. THE THRESHOLD HAS WEIGHT. The volume between the guardians carries a

real physical load — the air reads as depth, sound shortens, dust and offering-petals on the flagstones

lie differently inside the line than outside it, and a body moving through it moves as though moving

through deepening water. It is measured on the PLAYER'S body, never emitted from the carving, and

nothing about the sculpture changes at any point in the encounter.

SUPPORTING — A5 AGE AND STATE. Centuries of use are on the stone as material: oil and ghee darkening

the lower reaches, pigment renewed over pigment in the polychrome register, the polish where hands

have touched the same place on the way in for longer than any empire in the chapter has lasted. That

polish is the most eloquent thing in the frame — it is the record of everyone who was let through.

MECHANISM: the threshold is a real boundary and the guardian is its office rather than its enforcer.

Vril alters real physics rather than suspending it, so the boundary shows up as LOAD — a thing the

player's body has to answer with steadiness. The doctrine's mechanism requirement is met without the

carving doing anything, which is the only design that satisfies both the encounter and the care line.

EMISSION: NONE. The gate is bright because it is a South Indian temple gate in daylight, and the

stone is lit by the sun. Any glow here would simultaneously break the light law and turn a revered

guardian into a special effect.

5. articulation_delta

substitution "still articulates and the substitution has to admit joints". This subject is stone

that does NOT articulate, which is why the sheet reaches for A1/A6/A5 and leaves A8 unclaimed even

though the body is stone. Boarding it in §9 rather than quietly bending the axis, because a

non-articulating subject is a real class (this row, and the two Ch 6 trials) and the doctrine

currently has no clean home for it.

its polychrome and its wear states — and never reproduced as a copy of a specific worshipped

image (§7);

and a particle-settling difference across its boundary;

here for a different force, which is the second consumer of a thing that still has no home.

encounter WITHOUT DIFFICULTY, and that is a design requirement rather than set dressing: the

threshold is not hard for everyone, it is hard for this player right now, and seeing people walk

through it easily is what tells them so.

6. fight_grammar

VERBS ARE ATTUNE AND ENDURE, axis 30/45/25. The row's counters: "attune the protagonist's own

bearing/steadiness to the precinct (a Neophyte read); endure the threshold's testing weight."

the narrowing windowthe passable volume closes toward the gate's centre lineMOVE — cross now, on the line the crowd usesthe passage window

ONE SHAPE, ONE ANSWER, and the fourth is the row's own escalation made into a tell.

THE READ IS AT THE NEOPHYTE REGISTER AND THE SHEET HOLDS THAT LINE HARD. Everything the player

perceives here is ordinary observable fact — air, dust, sound, other people's footfalls, their own

body's load. There is no vril-signature sight, no aura, no substrate read. HL_0028/HL_0017 bind, the

substrate-perception onset is far ahead at Ch 15, and a design that let the player SEE the threshold

would have broken a hard line to save itself a design problem.

ESCALATION — the row's phrase is "narrows the threshold window". P2 does not add force. The passable

volume gets smaller and the timing gets tighter, so the same crossing must be made more precisely.

Nothing new is introduced and the guardian still has not moved.

THE FOUR CHANNELS, adapted to a subject with no body — the third instance of the accommodation this

lane has now made, and it names the precedent rather than reinventing it: POSTURE — the PLAYER'S,

which is the only body in the encounter that changes. BREATH — the player's, and it is the primary

input. VOCALIZATION — the temple's own sound, which damps rather than rises. NEW OPENER — the window

begins closing before the player starts moving.

OPENER AND VARIANTS: the root is THE STEP. Every variant is the step under more load, in less time,

through a narrower line.

BREAKABLE PARTS: NONE, and the absence is a HARD CARE REQUIREMENT rather than a design shortfall.

Nothing about a revered guardian figure is breakable by the player at any point, and hitzone_parts

must stay empty on this row permanently (§9).

CHAIN-METER BODY STATE: has_nonkill_path TRUE, trivially — there is nothing to kill and nothing to

damage. Progress shows in the player character's carriage and in how far into the gate's shadow they

have got.

RELOCATION AND TURF: none. The gate is the gate.

WIN: the inner court opens and a temple-interior discovery follows — the row's own reward. LOSS: no

death and no damage; the player is simply still outside, and the row logs the threshold rhythm for the

retry.

7. care_read

encounter touches none of them. The precinct and its people are never the trial; the goddess

is a revered guardian doing its own office. THE PLAYER IS ASKED TO ENTER CORRECTLY, WHICH IS WHAT

THE TRADITION ITSELF ASKS.

animate, does not turn its head, does not follow with its eyes, does not speak, does not attack, and

cannot be damaged. Every one of those is a specific temptation and each is refused by name here so

that a later lane cannot reintroduce one as a "small" enhancement. An animating temple guardian is

the single most common video-game treatment of this subject and it is exactly the treatment the row

forbids.

built in the documented IDIOM rather than as a copy of a specific worshipped image at a specific

living temple. The precinct is referenced, not reproduced [CH_07 § Key sites], and a

photogrammetry-grade replica of an actively worshipped murti would cross from reference into

reproduction.

that never moves, cannot be hit, and cannot hit back — is that a defang? The pass says NO. (1)

Nothing was reduced: the row arrived ATTUNE/ENDURE, guardian_trial, 30/45/25 puzzle-forward, with

the trial explicitly the threshold and never the precinct. This is canon's shape. (2) The defang

tell is a PASSIVE opponent, and the opponent here is the threshold, which is doing something

continuously and gets harder. The player is under real load for the length of the encounter. (3)

The devil's-advocate direction was run in full, because "make the statue fight" is the obvious

bolder option: it was rejected because the row forbids trope-horror, because no tradition attests

it, because it would make a revered figure an enemy on a living temple's threshold, and because

LINK_0129/LINK_0130 mean the decision propagates to two other chapters. The boldness available was

spent on the LOAD — the threshold is physically heavy and the player's own body is the readout —

and on the crowd walking through it easily beside them.

slice, and the first where filling the column later would be a care violation rather than a

eventually give a revered guardian hitzones.
