BE_0006_S2 — the wall that gives back a face: the trial with no body, and the chapter's lesson turned inward

CANON SUBORDINATION — this document is PROPOSAL-TIER: it serves canon and never outranks it.
The canon: the CVD · the T1 foundation docs · the T0 registries (registries/) · the spine
(docs/spine/CH_*.md) · the region pages (_source/02_Tier_2_Region_Pages/). Authority order: docs/DOC_MAP.md § 0.

If this document disagrees with canon, CANON WINS and this document is the defect — fix the

STATUS: PROPOSAL-TIER design sheet. It is the slice's first BODILESS encounter — no creature, no

anatomy, no attack — and the second subject (after BE_0005_S3) to run the five-part grammar against a

thing that is architecture rather than a body. The doctrine's own precedent for this is the landmark

band's honest adaptation of the four escalation channels to a thing with no face, and this sheet

follows it. It cites canon rows and writes none.

inselberg, its surface finished and polished until it gives back a face, carrying a corpus of

scratched verses left by people who stood there and looked. The spine's own description is the

brief: "a long plastered wall polished until it gives back a face, and along it are scratched the

verses of everyone who ever stood there and looked."

on the player's left, a drop on the player's right, and a two-hundred-pace ascent already in the

legs when they arrive. THE ARENA IS A LEDGE. That fact does more work in this encounter than any

anatomy would.

LIME PLASTER, not glass and not a mirror. It gives back a face the way old burnished plaster does —

warm, low-contrast, slightly soft, the reflection sitting IN the surface rather than behind it, and

the scratched verse-strokes crossing the face at every depth. A glass mirror would make this a

different and much cheaper encounter.

a spirit, not a yaka, not a guardian, and no Sri Lankan tradition holds that it is. It is a wall

that reflects, standing at the end of a climb, and the trial is what the protagonist does in front

of it. Inventing a mirror-spirit for this row would be a fabricated folklore claim about a real

living culture's real monument — the citation test's failure mode in its most tempting form,

because a spirit would have been easier to design than a wall.

scratch-anchor mechanic, and the reflection's response to the player's own held stillness.

4. elevation

ONE-LINE READ: a warm plaster wall at the end of a two-hundred-pace climb, giving back a child's face

that is not doing what the child is doing.

PRIMARY — A10 NEGATIVE SPACE, and the axis is chosen because the subject has nothing else available:

there is no body to enlarge, no limb to multiply, no material to substitute that would not destroy the

monument, and no mark that can be laid on a real heritage surface. What the wall gives back is the

player MINUS or PLUS something, and every beat of the encounter is a subtraction or an addition to a

reflection the player has been looking at since Chapter 1.

concealment more easily than the child does. Its appeal is the trap: it is the self that has stopped

paying for hiding.

under it shows through — and the horror is not the true form, which the player has known all along,

but the fact that it is VISIBLE. This is the chapter's identity-hiding pressure made into an image.

it is exactly what is there.

SUPPORTING — A8 MATERIAL SUBSTITUTION, used at its most literal: the reflecting body is lime plaster.

The distortions are therefore not warps in a mirror — they are the reflection sitting at a different

DEPTH in the plaster, catching light off a different polish, crossed by the scratched verse-strokes at

a different angle. Everything the encounter shows is something a polished plaster surface can

physically do, which is what keeps it inside the light law and out of the ghost-in-the-mirror register.

SUPPORTING — A5 AGE. The wall is old and the verses are older than most of the empires the protagonist

has crossed. The strokes are the accumulated regard of everyone who ever stood there — and the sheet

spends that on the mechanic (§6) rather than on atmosphere, which is what makes it an axis and not a

mood.

MECHANISM: the surface returns regard, and something is bending what it returns. The player's counter

is to give it something that cannot be bent — a steady, held, honest look. Vril alters real physics

rather than suspending it: the plaster is genuinely reflecting, and what is altered is the path.

EMISSION: NONE, and the encounter is deliberately staged in strong natural daylight on a west-facing

rock face, which is the hardest possible lighting for a glow and the best possible lighting for a

polished surface. The glow test passes by construction.

the reflected pose may depart from the player's before the illusion breaks. It is stated as a

requirement, not a value.

VERBS ARE PERCEIVE AND STEADY, axis 15/60/25. The row's counters: "match the reflection against the

steady truth of the self; steady against the distortion's pull."

THE COST OF A BODILESS ENCOUNTER, NAMED FIRST. The doctrine's distance test asks whether the wind-up

pose is distinguishable from the idle pose in silhouette — and this subject has no silhouette at all,

so the test cannot be run as written. The sheet does not get to skip it. It substitutes an equivalent

that can be run and states it as the ruler: EVERY TELL IN THIS ENCOUNTER IS READ ON THE PLAYER'S OWN

REFLECTED BODY, at the size that body occupies in the frame, and a tell that cannot be seen there has

failed exactly as a silhouette tell would. The reflection is the silhouette.

ONE SHAPE, ONE ANSWER, and the two answer classes are cleanly split: what the player can NAME is

perceived, what the player must ENDURE is steadied. A shape that carried both would make this a coin

flip, and the encounter's whole subject is the difference between seeing and flinching.

THE SCRATCH ANCHOR IS THE ENCOUNTER'S ONE GENUINE PUZZLE, and it earns the 60 axis. The distortions

can bend the reflection but not the wall: the verse-strokes are cut into the plaster and are the only

fixed thing in the frame. A player who learns to read the reflection AGAINST the strokes — this stroke

crosses the reflected shoulder, so the shoulder has not moved; that stroke crosses the reflected jaw,

so the jaw has — has found the method the whole chapter is teaching, which is to test a claim against

a mark that cannot be faked. It is the same method as BE_0006's courtesy tells, at a different scale

and on a different subject, and the cross-encounter lesson is deliberate: THIS IS THE CHAPTER'S ONE

IDEA, TAUGHT TWICE.

ESCALATION — the row's phrase is "multiplies the distortions rather than adding attacks". P2 shows two

distortions at once, on different parts of the same reflected body, so the player must hold one and

name the other simultaneously. No new content; the same wall, more of it wrong.

THE FOUR CHANNELS, adapted honestly to a thing with no face — the same accommodation BE_0005_S3 made,

and the sheet names the precedent rather than inventing a new one: POSTURE — the REFLECTION's posture

is the channel, and it is the only body in frame. BREATH — the reflected chest's rhythm decouples from

the player's, which is the encounter's quietest and worst moment. VOCALIZATION — NONE. The wall is

silent and stays silent, and the design instruction is explicit: no whisper track, no voice, nothing

speaks. A silent antagonist in a silent place at the top of a climb is stronger than any whisper, and

a whisper would also drag the unnamed L3 principle toward being a character. NEW OPENER — the

reflection stops waiting for the player to move.

OPENER AND VARIANTS: the root is THE LOOK — the player stands and the wall returns them. Every beat is

a variant of standing still and looking, which is why this encounter needs the ledge, the drop, the

two hundred paces already in the legs, and the wind. The difficulty is entirely in the cost of doing

nothing well.

BREAKABLE PARTS: NONE, and it is correct that there are none. Nothing here is broken and nothing is

subtracted from a moveset. hitzone_parts is legitimately empty on this row, which is a different

finding from the empty columns elsewhere in the chapter and §9 keeps them apart.

CHAIN-METER BODY STATE: has_nonkill_path TRUE — there is no kill available at all. Chain progress

shows in the SURFACE: as reads land and holds hold, the polish clears along the wall from where the

player stands, so the reflection's frame widens and steadies. The player can see the wall coming

right without looking at a meter.

RELOCATION AND TURF: the player relocates, not the subject. The gallery ledge runs, and the encounter

walks its length — each distortion met at a different stretch of wall with a different polish and a

different weathering, so the same trial is a different read five times over.

WIN: the true reflection held without flinching; the polish clears; "something in the reading eases"

[CH_06 body prose]. A self-perception boon that eases every later discernment. LOSS: no death — the

player breaks the look, and the row logs WHICH DISTORTION CAUGHT THEM, which is the row's own death

reward and is genuinely more interesting than a health bar.

7. care_read

which is a positive finding rather than an absence. The wall is a real monument of a living culture

creature template.

damage and no breakable parts a defang? The pass says NO, on three grounds. (1) Nothing was

REDUCED — the row arrived at 15/60/25 puzzle-dominant with target_type: perception_trial, so this

is canon's shape and not a softening this sheet applied. (2) The defang tell is a PASSIVE opponent,

and passivity here is the player's obligation rather than the subject's state: the wall is doing

something the whole time and the player is the one who must not. (3) The devil's-advocate direction

was run properly — could this be bolder? It could be made to attack, and that was rejected on

grounds the pass records: an attacking mirror is a horror-game cliché, it would give the unnamed L3

principle a body and a voice it must never have, and it would replace the chapter's actual subject

(the cost of seeing clearly) with a fight the player has already had twice. The bolder move

available was spent instead on the FEARFUL DISTORTION, which puts the protagonist's own concealment

on a wall in daylight and does not blink.

chain state and the reflection's independent animation are INVENTED BY THIS SHEET and are the game's

own. The wall, its polish, its verse-graffiti corpus, the frescoes, the 180-metre inselberg and the

gallery ascent are CITED. No folklore claim is made about the monument by this sheet.

distortion shows what is under the borrowed shape — which is the protagonist's OWN concealed nature,

known to the player since Chapter 1 and not a reveal. NOTHING ELSE APPEARS IN THE REFLECTION: no

House-of-Velheim name, family or pattern; no Grand Sage; no future-state image; no figure other than

the protagonist. The reflection is a mirror of a child and never a window onto the arc. That

constraint is stated here because a mirror is the single most tempting place in the slice to leak a

reveal, and it is the one place it must not happen.
