CANON SUBORDINATION — this document is PROPOSAL-TIER: it serves canon and never outranks it.
The canon: the CVD · the T1 foundation docs · the T0 registries (registries/) · the spine
(docs/spine/CH_*.md) · the region pages (_source/02_Tier_2_Region_Pages/). Authority order:docs/DOC_MAP.md§ 0.
Canon served (scanned from this document's own citations — widen it by hand where it is thin):

READ THAT CANON FIRST — open it and derive from it before you build anything from this document.
If this document disagrees with canon, CANON WINS and this document is the defect — fix the
document, never the canon. Nothing here is applied until it is ratified into canon.
STATUS: PROPOSAL-TIER design sheet, CONSTRUCT REGISTER (drafted on BE_0003_S3_tombo_holes.md § 4).
It cites canon rows and writes none.
an UNWITTING Dalang who is a protected victim-vessel freed by revelation. The row carries STRIKE as
its secondary verb, so the encounter is not combat-absent; what it cannot carry is a kill, because
there is no one to kill.

WHAT IS THE ARGUMENT MADE OF? Here the answer is unusually good, because the Balinese wayang already
supplies a complete physical system for making an argument visible:
painted hide figures on horn handles, thrown as shadow onto the kelir screen, moved by rods.
hinge each, a head that pivots. That is the real puppet's real articulation and it is the skeleton.
in this fight inherits that: two hinges per arm, a pivoting head, no spine bend, no knees. The
constructs move like puppets because they ARE puppets, and the constraint is the design's best
gift — a thing that fights with only four joints has a telegraph vocabulary a player can learn
completely.
the kelir it acquires one — edge-on it nearly vanishes, face-on it is a full figure. Turning is its
whole spatial identity.
silat guard.
through the unwitting Dalang — an institutional proxy, NW_0002, UNAWARE. The family does not yet
exist to the player and first appears at Ch 8; the page is reveal-ladder-safe at page grain.
dalang, the pande smiths, the subak farmers and the villagers, and the chapter's win frees him.
to command all three speech registers plus Kawi [SRC_00157]. The counter — read the performed lakon
against the true lontar to catch the laundered edit — is therefore a real literacy act in a real
literate tradition, not a puzzle bolted onto a temple.
own.
PRIMARY — A8 MATERIAL SUBSTITUTION. The constructs are made of shadow and hide, and every property
follows from that honestly rather than magically. They are FLAT. They are BLACK, not dark — a shadow
is an absence of light on a lit surface, and against a lit kelir that is the deepest value in frame.
Their edges are the punched openwork of a real wayang figure, so light comes through them in a lace of
small holes, which is the single most beautiful and most identifying thing about them and costs
nothing but geometry.
SUPPORTING — A10 NEGATIVE SPACE. They have no back. Walk behind one and there is a figure-shaped
nothing where the front was, and the fight's geometry changes completely depending on which side of
the screen the player is on.
THE LIGHT IS LEGAL, AND IT IS THE ENCOUNTER'S CENTREPIECE. The element visual law rules that of the
ten base families exactly three emit, and combustion with visible fuel is one of them. The blencong —
the wayang's own oil lamp — is a real flame with real fuel hanging in frame above the screen, and it
is the ONLY light source in this encounter. Everything the player sees is that one flame's doing:
the constructs are its shadows, their size is their distance from it, their edges soften as they move
away from it, and when the flame gutters the whole fight breathes. A boss encounter lit entirely by
one visible practical source, where the light IS the mechanic, is the strongest possible demonstration
that the light law makes fights better rather than smaller.
MECHANISM: an apparatus that launders a performance's authority has to move the performance, and here
it moves the figures. The constructs are the edit made visible — the laundered lakon standing up and
fighting for itself.
ONE-LINE SILHOUETTE READ: flat black silat fighters with lace-punched edges, thrown on a lit screen by
one hanging lamp, that vanish when they turn side-on.
anatomy law binds those ranges as strictly as it binds a monitor's neck. A construct that bends at
the waist has broken the design.
cause the player can see, and severing a rod is the part economy.
passing through it must be real light and must move when the flame moves.
loses it again on the way back. Nothing pops.
THREE PHASES, EVOLVE-NOT-SWAP: the shadow-duel against the constructs; the constructs multiplying
toward their source; the reveal, where the apparatus is exposed and SHOWN to the Dalang.
| tell shape | body origin | one answer | counter class worn on the body |
|---|---|---|---|
| the silat entry | both rod-arms drop to a low guard and the figure squares to the screen | break its rhythm on the tell — the row's own counter | dodge into the rhythm gap |
| the rod-arm strike | one arm hinge loads at the shoulder and the forearm snaps at the elbow | parry the forearm; the flat plate is a real contact surface | parry |
| the turn | the figure rotates and briefly has no width | it cannot strike while edge-on — this is the free window | positioning |
| the growth | the figure swells because it has moved TOWARD the lamp, not because it is powering up | move the lamp's relationship, or close on it — a big shadow has a small source | the puzzle lane |
| the laundered line | the performed lakon says something the true lontar does not | read them against each other — the row's own first counter | the puzzle lane |
THE GROWTH TELL IS THE FIGHT'S BEST IDEA AND IT IS PURE OPTICS: these things get bigger by getting
closer to the flame. A player who works that out stops fearing the size and starts reading the
GEOMETRY, and the phase-two multiplication becomes a spatial problem rather than a numbers problem.
VRIL BUDGET IS A REAL COUNTER, cited on the row: hold vril-budget through a draining pass. The
encounter takes from the player continuously and the composure node names it (vril_budget_hold), so
the fight has a resource clock that is not health.
BREAKABLE PARTS: the rod-arms, roughly 9 per cent of silhouette each. Break event: the arm hangs and
drags. Subtraction: that side's strike leaves the moveset permanently. Legibility gain: an asymmetric
puppet is instantly readable in a crowd of identical ones, which matters enormously in phase two.
ESCALATION, four channels on things with no breath: POSTURE — the guards stop being silat guards and
become the lakon's own stock poses, which is the apparatus stopping bothering to hide. BREATH — none,
and the absence is the channel: the gamelan under the fight is the encounter's breathing, and its
tempo is the escalation. VOCALIZATION — the Dalang's own voice, saying lines he did not write. NEW
OPENER — multiplication replaces the single duel.
THE WIN IS A REVELATION. Perceive-then-pacify: the apparatus revealed, the unwitting Dalang freed and
NEVER HARMED. The reveal beat is shown TO him, which is the encounter's emotional payload and the
reason the fight is worth having.
Dalang is a victim-vessel, not a villain; the balian is an ally; the tradition's sacred theatre is
honoured as the culture's own commentary rather than exoticised. The antagonist is an APPARATUS.
verb is real because the constructs are real objects.
the constructs must be authored from it by someone who knows the forms — sampling a puppet is not
the same as knowing why its arm has two hinges.
making the constructs abstract shadows, on the theory that fighting shapes drawn from a sacred
theatre is a desecration. REFUSED. The wayang's own tradition contains its own commentary and its
own villains; the figures fighting here are the LAUNDERED edit, which is the apparatus's crime made
visible, and the resolution restores the true lakon. Abstracting them would protect nothing and
would throw away the richest visual system on the island.
