Chapter 73 — Annwn: The Otherworld of Plenty, and the One Blow at the Ford

Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (itself grounded on the ratified Realm-Road re-architecture, CVD §17.7 and §19.8, and a build-time deep-research pass on the Welsh Otherworld — the Mabinogi's First Branch, Pwyll Pendefig Dyfed; Preiddeu Annwn; the Cauldron of Rebirth; Sioned Davies, Will Parker, Marged Haycock, Proinsias Mac Cana, John Koch), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). The v2.5 build itself REPLACED the pre-re-architecture "Realm War Phase Three: The Assembled Titan" node end to end; that fairy-war content (the colossus, the Elven King fighting at her side, the desecration-register guardrail) re-homed to the Ch 75-77 fairy fold and is recorded in docs/spine/REALM_RECASCADE_PUNCHLIST.md — Ch 73 is the Welsh Otherworld the elven traveler passes THROUGH, the tonal gateway of the CLIMB HOME (73-74). Not a hard-line node (canonical_hard_line_flag FALSE); reveal-adjacent, holds the §17.9 ceiling. Care tier OPEN (Welsh myth honored; represent-with-care still binds): Annwn is honored as its OWN Welsh tradition, never conflated with the game's own fairy realm; Arawn is the honored host and, by the end, a firm friend, never fought; Hafgan is the fought rival king, the honored-adversary register, won by the tale's own one-blow restraint. Drafted is not canonical.

Body prose

The road has taken her down into the dead and up out of them, and now, for the first time in longer than she wants to count, it takes her somewhere warm. She comes over a low green rise into a country that is simply, extravagantly alive — no rot in it, no grief in it, no rung of consequence to climb; a forest full of impossible game, a hall with the doors thrown open and the light of a feast already going inside, and an air so kind that she feels the held tension of the whole descent start, cautiously, to let go. She has learned to distrust exactly this. Beautiful places have cost her before. But she reads the country the way she reads everything now, carefully, and what she finds under the warmth is not a lie waiting to spring; it is only an old and courteous kind of plenty, a realm that does not age and does not sicken and does not hunger, keeping open house. The lord of it comes to meet her not as a threat but as a host, and after the country of the dead she has to relearn, almost from nothing, how to be a guest.

He asks a strange thing of her, this courteous king. There is a matter of honor between him and a rival, a wrong he cannot set right himself, and he asks her — trusting her with his own face and his own name and his own realm for a year and a day — to stand in his place and set it right. She takes the borrowed shape and the borrowed crown, and she learns that the whole of the year is a test of one thing, which is whether she can be trusted: whether she will keep faith with a man who has handed her everything, whether she will hold his honor as carefully as if it were her own when no one is watching and it would cost her nothing to let it slip. She holds it. Night after night in the borrowed life she keeps the trust exactly, takes nothing that was not offered, spends nothing of his that was not hers to spend, and the plenty of the realm is not a reward she seizes but a courtesy she is careful to deserve. The cauldron at the heart of the hall — the great pearl-rimmed thing that the old poems said would not so much as boil a coward's supper — warms for her, which is the realm's own quiet way of saying she has passed.

And then the ford, where the year comes due. The rival waits for her across the grey water, a king in his own right, come to fight for his own claim, and she understands before a blow is struck that this is not a monster and not a corruption and not a thing to be cleansed; it is a man defending what he believes is his, and the fight she has been lent is a duel of honor, not a slaughter. She has been told the one rule of it, and the rule is the whole meaning: she may strike him once, and once only. One clean, fully committed blow, given at the one moment the ford opens for it — and then, whatever he says, she must not strike again. So she waits, and reads the water, and when the moment comes she commits everything to a single stroke and lands it true, and he goes down with a mortal wound. And then he does the thing she was warned of: he lifts his head and begs her, in real pain, to finish him, strike again, be merciful and end it — and every instinct she has bled to earn on this whole road, every reflex that says close the fight, screams to give him the second blow. She does not give it. She knows, the way the story knew, that the second blow is the trap — that a killing mercy struck twice would only heal him and stand him back up stronger, that the whole reason this war could never be won was that better fighters than her had always, kindly, struck the second time. So she holds her hand. Find someone else, she tells him, almost gently; I will not. And he dies of the one wound, of the single honest blow and the refusal, and the two kingdoms become one, and the courteous king she stood in for becomes, when she gives him back his face and his name, not a debt she owes but a friend she has made. She leaves Annwn the way a good guest leaves a good house — richer for the welcome, having taken nothing that was not given, and having won the hardest fight of the whole road by the one blow she did not strike. One door left now. She goes toward the tree.

Protected-chapter / living-culture framing (§17.1 OPEN care — a living-culture tradition honored on its own terms)

Ch 73 renders the Welsh Otherworld of the Mabinogi, and carries OPEN §17.1 care — a treasured medieval literature of the living Welsh culture and language, honored on its own terms (open is not low care; represent-with-care still binds: weight and authenticity, never omission). Four commitments bind. First, the LOAD-BEARING RE-CASCADE CARE CALL — Annwn honored as its OWN tradition and NEVER conflated with the game's own fairy realm: the Welsh Celtic Otherworld is a real living-culture tradition, a Layer-2 substrate the traveler passes through and honors on its own terms (Arawn, Hafgan, Pwyll, the Cwn Annwn, the caers held as honored Welsh reference, echoed never lifted), and the game's OWN fairy realm (Ch 75-77) merely ECHOES the fair-folk register but is game-canon, never a relabeling of Annwn; the game's proper nouns stay out of Annwn's body-prose, and Annwn's stay honored Welsh reference. Second, ARAWN HONORED, NEVER FOUGHT (the deities-and-sovereigns-real discipline): Arawn is a noble, courteous Otherworld sovereign, the protagonist's host and, by the end, a firm friend and ally, never a villain or a monster; combat routes ONLY through Hafgan, and the Cwn Annwn are Arawn's honored hounds, never slaughter-fodder. Third, the HONORED-ADVERSARY (Louhi-rule) framing for HAFGAN: he is fought as a dignified contest of arms at the ford — a rival king contesting sovereignty, carried with the tale's own honest reading, never racialized, never an "evil" caricature, never a horror-monster; the one-blow-and-refusal is the moral core (the win is restraint and honor, not gore), preserved intact. Fourth, PROTECTED CONTENT REFERENCED NEVER REPRODUCED and NO SUPPLANTING: the Mabinogi and Preiddeu Annwn are referenced and investigatable (L2), never transcribed as ritual; and the protagonist ECHOES the Pwyll-role within the game's own dimensional Realm-Road otherworld (a fresh honor-test) — she does not supplant, upstage, or claim Pwyll's or Arawn's own foundational deeds, which remain theirs — Pwyll's own First-Branch deed and Arawn's own sovereignty are the Mabinogi's, not the protagonist's; this is a fresh honor-test echoing the Pwyll-pattern in the game's own dimensional Annwn (the same does-not-supplant discipline the Meru node held for the Indra-role). The §17.9 reveal ceiling binds throughout: no thesis declaration and no Grand-Sage hint (held Ch 76-77); no Cassius or patriarch (CHAR_0004) or Architect presence (node-agnostic, held to the fairy-realm confrontation); no Elven King and no fairy content (re-homed to Ch 75-77); no Annwn image (the cauldron of rebirth, the mound-gateway) wired to the Ch 76-77 thesis mirror-lattice; and the protagonist's elven-royal origin, known since Ch 66, plays at a traveler's scale here with no cosmic or destinal inflation [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0007] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0001].
