Chapter 71 — Xibalba: The Houses of the Lords of Death, and the Game Won by Wit

Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (authored to docs/proposals/CHAPTER_BUILD_TARGET.md and the v2.5 twenty-block anchor-hub schema, grounded on the ratified Realm-Road re-architecture — CVD §17.7 and §19.8; docs/proposals/AAA_REARCHITECTURE_PROPOSAL.md WS2 line 88 — and a build-time deep-research pass on the K'iche' Maya underworld of the Popol Vuh: Christenson and the Tedlocks; Coe; the ballgame scholarship; the living-Maya ethnography), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). This entry REPLACES the built Ch-71 node end to end: the built "Realm War, Phase One: The Manifested Front" was the pre-re-architecture fairy war, and under the nine-realm Realm Road ALL of its content — the three-phase Realm War, the Manifested Front (BE_0071) and its manifestation-anthology, the Elven King (CHAR_0005, her father, honored, name-forbidden HL_0099) as a defender at her side, the patriarch's reach (CHAR_0004), the full-vril-ceiling war combat, and the load-bearing antisemitism-guardrail "condition-made-weather" framing (HL_0109, HL_0114) — re-homes to the Ch 75-77 fairy fold and is recorded in docs/spine/REALM_RECASCADE_PUNCHLIST.md. Ch 71 is now the Maya underworld: a Realm-Road otherworld the elven traveler passes THROUGH, one of the realms-of-the-dead cluster (69 Duat judged / 70 Hades returned / 71 Xibalba tested-by-game / 72 Naraka-Meru climbed-out). Not a hard-line node (canonical_hard_line_flag FALSE — Ch 71 is outside the eighteen-node set); reveal-adjacent and holding the §17.9 ceiling, and carrying elevated §17.1 care: the K'iche' Maya are a LIVING people and the Popol Vuh a LIVING sacred council-book (Guatemalan intangible cultural heritage since 2012); the Hero Twins are honored culture-heroes whose role the protagonist steps into, and the Lords of Xibalba are the Popol Vuh's OWN antagonists, fought and outwitted as the sacred story frames them, diminished not exterminated. The living Maya, the living text, and the living ballgame are held present-tense and sovereign, echoed never lifted; the realm itself is the game's own game-canon dimensional space. Reveal-timing note — no thesis declaration, no Grand-Sage hint, no Cassius or patriarch or Architect presence, and no Elven King (§17.9 held to Ch 76-77). Drafted is not canonical.

Body prose

She has been down into a country of the dead once already on this road, and she thinks she knows the shape of it now — the grey patience, the elegiac hush. Xibalba teaches her, before she is an hour into it, that she knew nothing. This underworld is not patient and it is not hushed. It is a rigged game with the house always winning, and it has been a long time since it had anyone worth cheating. She crosses rivers that run with blood and with pus and with the massed backs of scorpions, and she comes to a place where four roads meet, each a different color, and the black one speaks to her in a friendly voice and tries to send her wrong. She reads the Maya sky and the Maya word the way she was taught in the living country above, and she does not take the road that flatters her.

At the council of the Lords she is meant to lose her dignity first. Twelve of them sit in the smoke, and she is meant to greet the two at the center by name and bow — except that two of the seated figures are carved wood, manikins set there so she will waste her respect on a puppet and be laughed at, and the real Lords have hidden their names so she cannot address them at all. It is a small cruelty and a whole philosophy: the house wins by making you play a game whose rules it has rigged and whose pieces it has swapped. So she does not bow to the wood. She sends a thing no larger than a thought to touch each Lord in the dark and make him speak, and one by one their names come out of them unwilling, and she greets each living Lord by his right name and leaves the puppets sitting. They offer her the seat of honor, which is a stone heated white in the fire. She thanks them, and does not sit.

Then the Houses, one for each night, and each one a death she has to out-think rather than out-fight. A House of pure dark where she must carry a torch and two lit cigars through the whole night and give them back unspent at dawn — and she gives them back whole, the torch crowned with a macaw's red tail-feathers that look like flame and never burn down, the cigars tipped with fireflies that glow and never ash. A House whose walls are living obsidian blades that want her flesh, quieted when she promises them the flesh of the beasts instead. A House of cold, a House of jaguars she scatters bones to so they fight over the bones and not over her, a House of fire. And the Bat House, worst of them, where Camazotz the death-bat comes down out of the black on wings like knives and takes a companion's head clean off — and she does not answer that with grief or with a blade, because neither would work here; she answers it the way the Twins did, with a substitute and a swap and a recovery made in the dark, and gets back what was taken, and the house does not win.

And at the last the game itself, which is the whole point, the thing the Lords summoned her down here to lose. They give her a ball that is a blade in disguise, meant to open her the moment she moves; they play on a court whose bounces they own. She wins it anyway — not by hitting harder, which is impossible in Death's own house, but by seeing the cheat and turning it, by skill and by nerve and by the one advantage the Lords cannot cheat, which is that she is cleverer than they are and enjoys it more. And when winning the game is not enough for them, when they mean to burn her for the insult of it, she does the last and best trick: she dies on purpose, and comes back, and dies and comes back again as a wandering pair of ragged performers doing an impossible act — killing a thing and reviving it, killing a person and reviving them, for coins — until the two great Lords of Death, One Death and Seven Death, lean down greedy and delighted and demand the trick be done to them. So she does the first half of it. She does not do the second. The house does not win, and it never gets to be the house again — not wholly. She breaks its right to demand the blood and the game as tribute, and she leaves the lesser lords their diminished lives when they beg for them, under the old rule the Twins set: from now on the place of fright gets only the sap and the resin and the guilty, never again the children of the light. She climbs back up toward the road she came in on, and she is still herself, and she is grinning, because for the first time on this whole descent the country of the dead did not take anything from her that she did not give it on purpose to get more back. Before she goes there is one more game, and this one has nothing on it: the lesser lords, with nothing left to demand and no rule left to bend, ask her for a match the way anyone asks, because the game is theirs and no one who ever beat them has stayed afterward to play one for nothing. So they play it straight, and with the rules straight they are magnificent — it turns out the house never cheated because it had to — and the match runs to the last point and very nearly gets away from her, argued the whole way with the deadly formality of a tribunal over a game with nothing at stake. Then the whole long road up is her people making her explain, trick by trick, how any of it was done, and then trying it themselves on the wreckage the realm left lying along the verge.

Typed v3.1 site rows (§3b) — beats reference these by site_id; the environmental detail rides each row as env texture.

Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)

Every fight blends primary-and-secondary verb across a three-axis split, with phase escalation that evolves rather than swaps (HL_0078); rewards land on both win and death per the T1_Combat failure-states rule — here, there is NO fail-wall at all [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0078] [SRC: T1_Combat_System_Spec].

VOCABULARY NOTE (arc-wide spine-registry intensity and mode mirror sweep, 2026-07-27): the declared value is the canonical seven-mode enum the live T0_Chapter_Index carries, because dominant_combat_mode maps one-to-one onto the engine Composure sub-node map — direct, stealth, puzzle_routed, environmental, vril_management, familiar, astral — so an eighth value would name a Composure node that does not exist; "contest-routed" is kept as the chapter's texture gloss and never as an enum value, so this beat-scale fold now folds to mode_variety_check on a value that is actually in the data [SRC: T99_Translation_Combat # 5.5] [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_71]. Thread-join note: all four of this chapter's threads (THREAD_01, THREAD_11, THREAD_06, THREAD_08) are joined to a single clearest carrier beat each, per the gate's carrier-beat discipline; none stays chapter-ambient-only here.

Terrace declaration (the ascent pattern's Clause 1): CH71_B11, CH71_B12, and CH71_B10 are three contiguous beats by seq (10-12) in character, learning, and character, none of them role climax and all three boss none — the node's intimacy terrace, the ledge the climber rests on without descending. The two added beats carry plain unsuffixed ids so the spine parser sees them (a letter-suffixed id is invisible to BEAT_HDR_RE and would leave the terrace underivable), and ordering is by seq rather than by id ordinal, so CH71_B10 keeps its id and every external reference to it stays valid. The site terrace rides the same run: xibalba_climb_out_road at ambient_threat low hosts CH71_B12 and CH71_B10, both non-combat, and each of its declared functions is used by a beat that sits on it. The intensity cell stays PEAK: the ledge is post-climax relief inside the node, not an intensity step-down, and it lowers neither the demand the chapter made nor the power the player brought to it.

Protected-chapter / living-culture framing (§17.1 elevated care — a living people and a living sacred text)

Ch 71 renders the underworld of a LIVING people's LIVING sacred book and carries elevated §17.1 care (the CVD §6.2 elevated-care tier for Mesoamerica, matching the Ch 47/48 Maya seeds — the living-sacred-text dimension held at the top of that tier). The K'iche' Maya are a living Indigenous people of highland Guatemala — a million and more speakers, with living daykeepers (ajq'ijab') who still keep the 260-day count — and the Popol Vuh (Popol Wuj, the Book of the Council) is their living sacred council-book, declared Guatemalan intangible cultural heritage in 2012, reaching us through translations made with living K'iche' keepers of the tradition. Five commitments bind. First, PRESENT-TENSE AND SOVEREIGN: the Maya are held as a living present-tense people and the Popol Vuh as living sacred narrative, never a dead curiosity, never the "mysterious" or "lost" or "vanished" Maya (the Classic-period decline was a Terminal-Classic reorganization, and roughly six million Maya live today across Guatemala, Mexico, Belize, and Honduras); the ballgame is honored as a still-played living tradition (pelota maya, ulama), not a relic. Second, THE HERO TWINS AND THE SACRED STORY: the Twins are honored culture-heroes and the Popol Vuh's own telling is authoritative; the protagonist enters the Twins' role and honors the descent-and-trial structure, never appropriating, costuming, or re-writing the sacred narrative, and never placing a deity or sacred proper name on a mortal NPC (the Kxao rule) or casting a revered figure as a villain (the Liqä rule). Third, THE LORDS OF XIBALBA — fightable with care, the myth's own antagonists: One Death and Seven Death and the lesser lords are the underworld powers of disease and death the Twins overcome in the Popol Vuh itself, legitimate antagonists in the §17.1 honored-adversary register, rendered as the myth's grave and tricky death-lords and never as a horror-schlock demon-parade or crudely caricatured "evil Maya gods"; the win is out-play and out-trick, and it DIMINISHES their power to demand sacrifice with the submitting lesser lords SPARED under the Popol Vuh's own restriction — the cleverness-triumph of the sacred story, explicitly not a genocidal slaughter of a pantheon. Fourth, THE BALLGAME AND SACRIFICE — sacred stakes, not gore: the ballgame's real association with sacrifice is referenced as the cosmic stakes the Popol Vuh gives the game (the contest of life and death, death-and-rebirth), never lurid decapitation-gore-spectacle; the Bat-House decapitation-and-restoration is carried with the myth's own gravity; and no sacrifice or bloodletting ritual is reproduced or performed as a playable set-piece (HL_0007), no living-tradition voice cloned (HL_0110) and no ceremonial sound parodied (HL_0111). Fifth, PROTECTED CONTENT REFERENCED NEVER REPRODUCED: the sacred narrative and any ceremonial content are referenced, never transcribed or staged. The §17.9 reveal ceiling binds throughout: no thesis declaration and no Grand-Sage hint (held Ch 76-77); no Cassius or patriarch (CHAR_0004) or Architect presence (node-agnostic, held to the fairy-realm confrontation); no Elven King and no fairy content (re-homed to Ch 75-77); Xibalba's Mirror of Retribution and every judgment or mirror image is myth-geography ONLY, never wired to the Ch 76-77 thesis mirror-lattice; and the protagonist's elven-royal origin, known since Ch 66, plays at a traveler's scale here with no cosmic or destinal inflation [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0007] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0001].
