She comes back to the Americas she crossed on the way up out of the south, and finds the family's last front here made of the one weapon she cannot cut: debt. Not doubt this time, not silence, not a bought consensus — a cordon of paper drawn tight around every piece of ground her road has helped a community take back. Its hand in the Americas is not a lawyer with a grievance but a woman who prices things: who looks at a nation's suffering and sees an entry that has to balance, who has never once stood on the ground her paper forecloses, and who runs the debt and the lien and the title the way another kind of general runs a siege. She keeps a litigator to do the filing — a man whose whole craft is the motion and the delay and the complaint entered in the right office at the right hour — but he is only her instrument, and the encirclement is hers. She does not argue that the record is false. She encircles it: a regulatory complaint here, a lien filed there, a cease-and-desist, a SLAPP suit, a foreclosure on the very land the case was won for — a ring of instruments closing slowly inward, each one lawful, each one ruinous, the process itself the punishment, until holding a true thing costs more than anyone can pay.
And under the paper, in a register only she and now the protagonist can read, the cordon has teeth. Every foreclosure the family has ever driven, every household put off its land, every debt made a life sentence, has left a wronged and grieving thing behind it — and the woman who prices has gathered those up, the way she gathers everything, and bound them: a ring of debt-wraiths, each one a real foreclosure made into a haunting, set to guard the ground its living owners were driven from. It is the cruelest of the family's constructs, because it is built from the family's own victims. She reads them with the sight that shows a lien for what it is — a spell, a binding-sigil worked in the grammar of law — and she understands that there is only one counter-sigil large enough to void the whole ring: the case. Not one page against one filing, which the wall was built to answer, but the whole of her road entered at once — every operation the family has run since she came back into the daylight world, from the pharmaceutical ledger to the drowned Amazon, each documented, each joined to the next, so that every wraith in the cordon is dissolved by the exact wrong it was made from, named and entered and answered from inside the ring, the wronged dead of the displacement testifying at last to the debt that killed them. She breaks the siege from within; the road's own accrued allies — the counsel, the water-protectors, the mambo, the keepers — enter the record from without in support; and the encirclement, having no continuance it can file against the truth entered whole, collapses. She is countered, in the end, in the daylight where she worked: an anti-SLAPP motion, a demand for the records under the freedom-of-information law, a whistleblower's documents that outlive every attempt to bury them — the law she made a cordon of turning out to have doors that open both ways. She is never beaten in argument. She loses because the account, at last, balances against her.
The communities whose ground she is fighting for have their own names for what the woman who prices is, older and truer than anything in the filings. In the high Andes they have known her kind for five centuries: the pishtaco, the stranger who comes quietly among them and renders the fat of their bodies into a wealth carried off somewhere far away — not a monster the family sends, but the community's own exact diagnosis of the thing being done to them, a folk-science of extraction sharper than any economics. In the Caribbean they know the soucouyant who sheds her skin to feed in the dark and the duppy that will not rest for a debt unpaid; on the northern coast the great wild woman of the woods and the double-headed serpent of the deep are held in crests that are law and lineage and not hers to draw. She does not wear any of these — the family's thing is the cold ring of paper, and the pishtaco is the name the people level at it, never its mask. But the naming matters. A community that already has a true word for what is being done to it cannot be told that the harm is imaginary.
And she goes, in the reading of it, to the ground where the law was used the same way long before her — used not to weigh the truth but to bury it. On the northern coast she comes to a people whose whole way of governing itself, the great gift-giving by which rank and law and history were carried from one generation to the next, was once made a crime: families jailed for dancing, their sacred belongings carried off in crates by men with warrants — and the same people, unbroken, dancing it again now, and having brought the crates home. On the high plains she comes to a range of dark hills a nation holds as the heart of everything that is, that a treaty promised them forever and gold unpromised inside a decade, and that a court, a century on, at last admitted had been taken by a course of dishonorable dealing and offered to pay for — and that the nation will not sell, has never once considered selling, because the hills were never for sale, and the only settlement they will accept is the hills. She stands at a river where, not long ago at all, thousands stood in the cold to say that the water is alive and must not be poisoned, and were answered with dogs and cold and cannon, and stood anyway.
She holds all of it the way it has to be held, which is carefully. There is a creek on those plains where an army once turned its guns on a band that was mostly women and children and elders and left them in a pit in the snow, and she does not fight there, and there is nothing there to fight; she only stands, the way the living stand at a place like that. And the great sacred mystery the Oceti Sakowin have always known — the holiness that lives in all things, that is not her current and is not anyone's to name for them — she leaves exactly where it is, honored and untouched, a thing that runs alongside the one she has followed her whole life and is emphatically not the same thing.
She reads the old gathering-places of the earth at last at full mastery — the deep vent under the mid-ocean, the accumulation-seat in the African rift — and for the first time she feels how they answer one another, how every buried finding the wall exists to keep un-entered points the same way, toward one thing under everything that she is nearly, now, in a position to read whole. And the turtle that has carried her across so many warm oceans surfaces again in the island seas of the Caribbean, where a people old on these waters keep their own ancient telling of a great turtle at the beginning of things, and she honors the meeting for exactly what it is and does not make their story into hers.
She has the case assembled and the record safe and the fourth of the family's four fronts broken, and what remains now is not another front but the reckoning itself.
