She comes to the oldest living country on earth to be, for the first time in her life, correctly seen. She has spent the whole of her long road as the only one who knew what she was, hiding it from priests and spymasters and a family that has hunted her without ever once naming her true nature — and here, on Bininj and Mungguy land in the Build-Up before the Wet, that long solitude quietly ends. She does not come as an operator. There is nothing here to seize; the family, by an old discipline, does not work this country, and she enters it the way the healer's child taught her to enter the Arctic — as a guest, careful of what she is shown and what she is not, on land whose people have belonged to it and answered to it across a depth of time the rest of the world has only just learned to measure.
The country is a way the present is arranged. She has walked inside enough traditions to feel the difference: this is a living order — the land sung and named and known, alive and willed, holding a yesterday and a today and a tomorrow all at once, and the people moving in it under obligations that run both ways, caring for country as country carries them. She has felt something beneath the surface of the world everywhere she has gone, a half-understood sense she has carried alone; and here that lone half-secret meets a whole people's unbroken, living knowledge of their own country, held in their own terms and their own words, for longer than any people anywhere. It humbles the old pride in her that had begun to think it understood how the world holds its depth.
The action, when it comes, comes without a single person or animal to fight. The Build-Up throws its weather at her — the heat that presses like a hand, the first lightning walking the escarpment, the flash-flood filling a billabong she has to be out of before it does — and she reads the stone country the way she has learned to read every terrain, route and exposure and footing, a saltwater crocodile a danger she gives the water to rather than a thing she kills. And under the visible country, in the astral register she has controlled since the middle of the sea, she finds a stretch of ground gone sour — a place damaged in the way country can be damaged, where a negative accretion has gathered in the substrate like static over a wound. It is not a being and it is not sacred; it is a sickness in the ground. She does not save the country and she does not take it into her keeping — the country has its keepers, and it is at their alignment, never her initiative, that she works, easing the accretion out of the substrate without ever laying a hand on the genuine, living echo of the place. She is allowed to help clear a hurt. She is not allowed, and does not try, to own the healing.
And then an Elder, of her own choosing and her own authority, looks at her and says what she is. What she is, in the country's own terms and no others: that the ground knows this walker, that she is not new, that she moves in the Dreaming the way the living move in it, that she carries the marks of a great deal of country she has crossed, and that she is a long way — a very long way — from her own country and her own old people. Every word of it is exactly true, and none of it is taken from anywhere it should not be; the Elder does not teach her a song or a site or a secret, and she does not ask, because she has never in her life asked to be known and would not start by demanding it. The recognition is given, freely, by someone who simply sees. The healer's child is there, and writes nothing of it down that is not hers to keep. It is the largest thing that has happened to her in the whole journey and there is not a blow struck in it.
She leaves changed in a way the craft did not change her. When she woke the craft, the world became a thing she could cross; here she becomes a person who has been seen and named and, for one clean moment, not alone. She lets Ntala make the record public at last — the account of the family and its long theft, gathered across the whole modern road, released now to the world, though the parts that are not hers to publish stay closed. And something she has half-heard since the very beginning, a presence at the edge of her hearing, comes a step nearer to clear. She does not know yet what it is. She only knows, walking off Bininj country toward the cold at the bottom of the world, that the road is turning at last toward things being found rather than lost.
