Chapter 46 — Southwest USA (Groom Lake and Chaco Canyon): The Cover Story

Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (authored fresh to docs/proposals/CHAPTER_BUILD_TARGET.md and the v2.5 twenty-block anchor-hub schema), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the RCM Ch 46 substrate, BOSS_PERSONAS, and a build-time deep-research pass on Chaco, Area 51, and the living Pueblo cultures. This is a STEALTH chapter and Astral Projection's first modern-world full-mastery-scale application (after the Ch 15 Egypt full-mastery debut); it carries elevated §17.1 care on the living Hopi/Zuni/Pueblo nations (ceremony witness-depth ONLY, never reproduced — the Voth case is the in-world model of what NOT to do) and holds the extraterrestrial mythology to the authorial anti-fringe layer (never a player-facing debunk; the antagonist cynically OCCUPIES a pre-existing cover story diegetically, and the real declassified history is surfaced as L2 wonder). Po'pay and the Pueblo Revolt are honored, audit-only. The reveal is LIFTED (the House of Velheim is nameable); the patriarch is held for Ch 76 and the thesis for Ch 77 (§17.9). Drafted is not canonical.

Body prose

The story out front in this desert is that something fell out of the sky. What she has come to find is what the story was built to keep people from looking at — what was already on the ground before any story landed. Groom Lake is a real base that hid real machines: the spy-plane that flew so high its silver belly caught the sun, the balloon-train built to listen for Soviet bomb tests that came down in 1947. The men who ran it learned, somewhere along the way, that a good story out front is the best fence you can build, because a fence keeps people out and a good story keeps them from wanting in. And the family, when it came, did not invent that fence. It found it already working and stepped inside it, the way it always steps inside whatever is already standing — a national-security story here, a preservation story there, a mission bell three centuries back. Behind the story is a rift, and behind the rift is a research program, and behind the program is a chair she cannot see. The whole chapter is learning to say, on the record, exactly what this facility really does behind the face it shows — the taking, wearing a look that made the taking seem like defense.

She goes in the only way that leaves no fingerprint. She lies down somewhere the cameras cannot find her, and she leaves her body, and Ana sits over it with a blade because a projected mind is no good to anyone if a guard trips over the meat it left behind. The facility is a maze of sensor-walls and sweep-patterns, and she learns it not by cutting wire but by slipping through the plane underneath the wire — until she realizes she is not alone on that plane, and that the watchers here are not what she first takes them for. What sweeps the astral the way the dogs sweep the fence are not free minds choosing to hunt her; they are sensitives who were taken and bound to the work, echoes wrenched onto the plane and made to patrol it on a compulsion none of them gave, each carrying the same cold binding-mark where a hand closed on it and did not open. It is the inverse of her own craft — she leaves her body of her own will and returns, and these were forged to stay, made into fence-dogs by a hand she cannot see and cannot yet name. She does not have to cut them down to win; she has to slip their sweep and mask her own signature and go where the watch does not reach. And they can follow her, and the infiltration becomes a thing she has never done before: a chase inside her own tool, cat and mouse on the projected floor, the whole time her body breathing somewhere she has to hope no one opens the door of. She takes the schematic. She maps the rift. She does not fire a shot at a person to do it, and she names, in the record she carries out, exactly what the story out front was always for.

And in between, she does the older, quieter thing. She stands at a distance from a butte she is told she may not climb — Fajada, where three slabs of stone were set a thousand years ago to catch a dagger of light on a spiral and mark the turning of the sun and the long nineteen-year swing of the moon. It is the most precise instrument north of the Mesoamerican observatories, built by the ancestors of the people whose reservation she can see from here for their own turning of the year — wholly their calendar, never a bearing for anything of hers. What she reads is the coordinate the way the place demands it be read: not off the stone at all but off the vril-resonance that surfaces beneath the butte on the light-event, witnessed and never touched. Because the stone remembers being moved. A slab slipped once, under nothing worse than too many careful feet, and the light has never fallen quite true since, and the canyon closed the butte to keep the watching itself from wounding it further. That is the whole ethic of the chapter in one ruined alignment — that some things are undone by being touched, even gently, even to admire them, and the only honest way to know them is to leave no mark.

She is careful in the same way with the people. She does not go where the ceremony is. She knows the Snake society dances in its season and she knows that a man once forced his way into that season with a camera and a notebook and called the theft preservation, and she knows the difference between them is the whole point — that the family in its facility, harvesting what was never theirs to take, is that ethnographer grown to the size of the state. So she keeps outside the closed door, and she lets the Hopi woman who meets her at the canyon's edge tell her only what the Hopi decide an outsider may hold, and no more, and she does not write down the rest. What she is shown instead is the long argument the sky makes with the ground here, the road built dead straight to true north to point at the pole, the water-serpent painted on the old pots where the rain-lines run — the public face of a private faith, offered, not taken. When the record is finished — the rift mapped, the cover named, the coordinate read off the resonance beneath — the thing she has really done is refuse a claim: the one that says the sacred belongs to whoever is strong enough to fence it. She witnessed. She touched nothing. She wrote down who did.

Protected-chapter combat framing (ruling 5)

Ch 46 is a Ruling-5 protected-community and protected-site chapter: no combat against the living Hopi, Zuni, Acoma, or any Pueblo nation, and all ceremony engaged at witness/existence depth ONLY — the game may show that ceremony has weight, timing, and secrecy (Ortiz's "center of time"), but NEVER reproduces, transcribes, stages, or lets the player perform it, and the Hopi Snake-Antelope ceremony is referenced only through the FACT of its restriction, never its content (the Voth 1903 ethnography is the in-world model of what NOT to do, referenced as a cautionary artifact, never a reproduction-depth source) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0007] [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 17.1]. Every fight is directed at the classified facility's apparatus — its automated defenses, its security personnel, the "Dustdevil" contractor, and the counter-projection watchers on the astral plane — and at the colonial-presidio historical echo; the sacred sites (Chaco, Fajada Butte) are witness-and-protect zones that combat and extraction route AROUND, never through, and the sun-dagger is read by witnessing, never by touching [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0004]. Po'pay is a real historical liberator, audit-only, witnessed and honored, never fought or fictionalized; the descendant nations are named precisely and rendered present-tense sovereign (never "Anasazi", never pan-Indian, never a vanished race); the interpretive authority defers to the HCPO and Hopi-authored scholarship; and the living-tradition floor binds — no synthetic voice-clone of a Pueblo cultural figure (HL_0110) and no parodic SFX of the tradition (HL_0111) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0110] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0111].

Decisions surfaced

Ch 46 surfaced these decisions; the grounded and creative-within-vision ones are resolved inline with reasoning shown (Josh-override-able at RR-52), and no cardinal un-decidable is left open. This is not a hard-line node, so no Stage-2 canonical-question set is required.
