Chapter 46 — Southwest USA (Groom Lake and Chaco Canyon): The Cover Story
Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (authored fresh to docs/proposals/CHAPTER_BUILD_TARGET.md and the v2.5 twenty-block anchor-hub schema), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the RCM Ch 46 substrate, BOSS_PERSONAS, and a build-time deep-research pass on Chaco, Area 51, and the living Pueblo cultures. This is a STEALTH chapter and Astral Projection's first modern-world full-mastery-scale application (after the Ch 15 Egypt full-mastery debut); it carries elevated §17.1 care on the living Hopi/Zuni/Pueblo nations (ceremony witness-depth ONLY, never reproduced — the Voth case is the in-world model of what NOT to do) and holds the extraterrestrial mythology to the authorial anti-fringe layer (never a player-facing debunk; the antagonist cynically OCCUPIES a pre-existing cover story diegetically, and the real declassified history is surfaced as L2 wonder). Po'pay and the Pueblo Revolt are honored, audit-only. The reveal is LIFTED (the House of Velheim is nameable); the patriarch is held for Ch 76 and the thesis for Ch 77 (§17.9). Drafted is not canonical.

operational type SURVEILLANCE/MILITARY, Sector 3 Military-Industrial — the eighth node of the modern arc (Ch 39-50): a classified rift-technology-research installation, the initial deployment of a rift-research apparatus chain (the rift-chain node 1, whose payoff detonates at Ch 58, running Ch 46 → 54 → 56 → 58); the family does not invent the cover, it cynically OCCUPIES a pre-existing real cover story already standing over the site to hide its human program [SRC: T0_Antagonist_Network_Registry @ NW_0043] [SRC: T4_House_of_Velheim_Canonical # 9.1].
canonical_hard_line_flag FALSE — not one of the eighteen hard-line nodes; a Ruling-5 protected-community chapter carrying elevated §17.1 care (the living Pueblo peoples inviolate and never combat targets; ceremony witness-depth only; Po'pay audit-only; the extraterrestrial mythology held to the authorial anti-fringe layer, never a player beat) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 17.1].

Continuity anchor (SSBL §9.3 — Ch 46 start state = Ch 45 end state)
The protagonist reaches the Southwest eighteen and holding the young-adult plateau (internal age designer-only, never surfaced) [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_46].
Companions: the healer's child (CHAR_0002), the primary companion and journal-keeper (the journal building toward the Ch 48 public-release deliberation — the decision at Ch 56, the release at Ch 57, per T3_Core_Characters); Ana (CHAR_0017), the melee blade — and here the body-guard, because the Astral Projection leaves the body vulnerable on the floor [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0002].
Identity concealment CONCEALMENT_WITH_HOSTILE_RECOGNITION: the reveal is LIFTED (the House of Velheim nameable), but the chain up above the operative stays dark (the patriarch held for Ch 76), and nothing of the thesis is spoken (held for Ch 77); Kestrel is FAMILY_BRIEFED and reports the intel she cannot stop being taken, answering upward to a chair she has never seen [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043].
The Vimana hunt is OPEN with Coordinates 1 and 2 of 6 in hand (the Drakensberg, Ch 41; the Woodhenge, Ch 45); Coordinate 3 of 6 is read HERE as the vril-resonance surfaces beneath the Fajada Butte on the sun-dagger light-event — by WITNESSING the light and the alignment, never by touching the slabs, and never a bearing the builders set in the stone — the hunt advancing toward the Ch 55 Vimana [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_46].
Ability state: the Astral Projection ability (A_C_001, the Crown-seat Vril ability, NOT a trade) takes its FIRST modern-world full-mastery-scale application here (its second career peak after the Ch 15 Egypt full-mastery debut) — the projected infiltration past the facility's sensor walls, the physical body left hidden and vulnerable; the Trade-9 inscription-sight is applied to the Chaco petroglyph panels and the facility's internal records (a modern-world application) [SRC: T0_Ability_Tree_Registry @ A_C_001].
Body prose
The story out front in this desert is that something fell out of the sky. What she has come to find is what the story was built to keep people from looking at — what was already on the ground before any story landed. Groom Lake is a real base that hid real machines: the spy-plane that flew so high its silver belly caught the sun, the balloon-train built to listen for Soviet bomb tests that came down in 1947. The men who ran it learned, somewhere along the way, that a good story out front is the best fence you can build, because a fence keeps people out and a good story keeps them from wanting in. And the family, when it came, did not invent that fence. It found it already working and stepped inside it, the way it always steps inside whatever is already standing — a national-security story here, a preservation story there, a mission bell three centuries back. Behind the story is a rift, and behind the rift is a research program, and behind the program is a chair she cannot see. The whole chapter is learning to say, on the record, exactly what this facility really does behind the face it shows — the taking, wearing a look that made the taking seem like defense.
She goes in the only way that leaves no fingerprint. She lies down somewhere the cameras cannot find her, and she leaves her body, and Ana sits over it with a blade because a projected mind is no good to anyone if a guard trips over the meat it left behind. The facility is a maze of sensor-walls and sweep-patterns, and she learns it not by cutting wire but by slipping through the plane underneath the wire — until she realizes she is not alone on that plane, and that the watchers here are not what she first takes them for. What sweeps the astral the way the dogs sweep the fence are not free minds choosing to hunt her; they are sensitives who were taken and bound to the work, echoes wrenched onto the plane and made to patrol it on a compulsion none of them gave, each carrying the same cold binding-mark where a hand closed on it and did not open. It is the inverse of her own craft — she leaves her body of her own will and returns, and these were forged to stay, made into fence-dogs by a hand she cannot see and cannot yet name. She does not have to cut them down to win; she has to slip their sweep and mask her own signature and go where the watch does not reach. And they can follow her, and the infiltration becomes a thing she has never done before: a chase inside her own tool, cat and mouse on the projected floor, the whole time her body breathing somewhere she has to hope no one opens the door of. She takes the schematic. She maps the rift. She does not fire a shot at a person to do it, and she names, in the record she carries out, exactly what the story out front was always for.
And in between, she does the older, quieter thing. She stands at a distance from a butte she is told she may not climb — Fajada, where three slabs of stone were set a thousand years ago to catch a dagger of light on a spiral and mark the turning of the sun and the long nineteen-year swing of the moon. It is the most precise instrument north of the Mesoamerican observatories, built by the ancestors of the people whose reservation she can see from here for their own turning of the year — wholly their calendar, never a bearing for anything of hers. What she reads is the coordinate the way the place demands it be read: not off the stone at all but off the vril-resonance that surfaces beneath the butte on the light-event, witnessed and never touched. Because the stone remembers being moved. A slab slipped once, under nothing worse than too many careful feet, and the light has never fallen quite true since, and the canyon closed the butte to keep the watching itself from wounding it further. That is the whole ethic of the chapter in one ruined alignment — that some things are undone by being touched, even gently, even to admire them, and the only honest way to know them is to leave no mark.
She is careful in the same way with the people. She does not go where the ceremony is. She knows the Snake society dances in its season and she knows that a man once forced his way into that season with a camera and a notebook and called the theft preservation, and she knows the difference between them is the whole point — that the family in its facility, harvesting what was never theirs to take, is that ethnographer grown to the size of the state. So she keeps outside the closed door, and she lets the Hopi woman who meets her at the canyon's edge tell her only what the Hopi decide an outsider may hold, and no more, and she does not write down the rest. What she is shown instead is the long argument the sky makes with the ground here, the road built dead straight to true north to point at the pole, the water-serpent painted on the old pots where the rain-lines run — the public face of a private faith, offered, not taken. When the record is finished — the rift mapped, the cover named, the coordinate read off the resonance beneath — the thing she has really done is refuse a claim: the one that says the sacred belongs to whoever is strong enough to fence it. She witnessed. She touched nothing. She wrote down who did.
Threads advancing
Thread 2 (serpent), witness-depth Southwest touch — the Pueblo water-serpent (Awanyu in Tewa, Kolowisi in Zuni, Paaloloqangw in Hopi), a revered water/rain/lightning being surfaced ONLY through its public pottery and petroglyph iconography (the rain-line motif on the old wares, the canyon-wall rock art), never staged in its ceremonial role and never a summonable or fightable entity [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 2].
Thread 3 (Antagonist Family), advancing (reveal LIFTED) — the House of Velheim's SURVEILLANCE/MILITARY / Sector-3 form: the classified rift-technology-research installation (rift-chain node 1, running to Ch 54/56/58), and the family's cynical occupation of the pre-existing cover story already standing over the site; the counter-projection watch re-read as bound astral-sentinels — sensitives taken and forced onto the plane, a first modern taste of the family FORCING a supernatural asset rather than only fielding paid guns, deployed UNATTRIBUTED (the same forcing-mark recurs across the modern arc and is not attributed to a hand until Ch 63); and the family's modern surveillance arm seeded as the off-stage architect this installation's overwatch reports up to (a chair felt, embodied later — no name surfaced, no target named), the chain up otherwise dark into the nameless ledger (the patriarch held for Ch 76); the family nameable player-facing [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 3] [SRC: T0_Antagonist_Network_Registry @ NW_0043] [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # THE BLIND-SPOT] [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # THE CONSTRUCT-KIT].
Thread 7 (Sacred Numerology / Gematria — here in its archaeoastronomy register) — the Fajada Butte sun-dagger's calendrical geometry as sacred number: the solstice/equinox light-daggers on the spirals and the 18.6-year lunar-standstill count read in the large spiral's turns (Sofaer / the Solstice Project), the numerical order the makers pecked into the rock [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 7].
Thread 18 (Sacred Mountains / Axis Locations) — the Chacoan sacred axis: the Great North Road engineered about 50 km to within half a degree of true north, a road built to point at the celestial pole; the cardinal "center place" framed by the mesa-top great houses; and Fajada Butte itself as a sacred axis-location (Alfonso Ortiz's "a center of time on a high butte"); beneath it the protagonist reads Vimana Coordinate 3 of 6 as vril-resonance off the substrate — witnessed on the alignment, never a bearing the builders encoded, never touched (the alignment itself wholly the makers' own) [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 18].
Historical-fluctuation beat (the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, a mechanic beat rather than a thread) — Po'pay of Ohkay Owingeh and the knotted-cord runners who coordinated the rising that expelled Spanish colonial authority for about twelve years (1680-1692), the most successful Indigenous anti-colonial resistance in the pre-US continental record — a witness beat in which the Spanish colonial garrison (the casas reales) and the mission apparatus are the only colonial-echo combat frame and Po'pay is witnessed and honored, never fought or invented [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING].
Thread 1 (vital force / rift-substrate), the modern register — the vril/rift substrate the classified facility actually researches, the human program the cover story was built to hide; the substrate operating as real behind the cover [SRC: ESOTERIC_GROUNDING].
Civilizational marks (the builders-of-knowledge layer, §9.5 mandatory)
Chaco Canyon — the Ancestral Puebloan "Chaco Phenomenon" (circa 850-1150 CE): the planned multi-story masonry great houses (Pueblo Bonito, 600-800 rooms in a great D-shaped plan; Chetro Ketl), built with hundreds of thousands of timbers hauled from mountains over 75 km away, and the engineered road network — the Great North Road running about 50 km to within half a degree of true north, a road built to point at the sky's pole (Lekson, Frazier, Plog; the Chaco Meridian held as one scholar's disputed hypothesis, never as fact) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 46 Southwest USA].
The Fajada Butte sun-dagger — the dual solar-and-lunar instrument documented by Anna Sofaer's Solstice Project: three stone slabs channeling light-daggers onto spiral petroglyphs to mark solstices and equinoxes and to track the 18.6-year lunar standstill; honored as real archaeoastronomy AND as a site harmed by observation (a slab slumped from visitor-caused erosion in 1989, and the canyon closed the butte to protect it) [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING].
The living Pueblo nations — the continuous, present-tense descendants of the Chaco builders: the Hopi Tribe (Orayvi / Old Oraibi on Third Mesa continuously inhabited since before about 1100 CE, widely cited as the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the US), Zuni, Acoma, Laguna, and the nineteen sovereign Pueblos of New Mexico — distinct nations across several language families (Uto-Aztecan, the Hopi's own family; Kiowa-Tanoan, with its Tiwa, Tewa, and Towa branches among the Rio Grande Pueblos; Keresan; and the Zuni isolate), never a pan-Indian composite, engaged at the descendant-community consultation frame (the Hopi Cultural Preservation Office, Hopi-authored scholarship privileged over outsider salvage-ethnography) [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 17.1].
The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 — the disciplined, coordinated, and successful act of religious and political self-determination led by Po'pay (Knaut), honored in the present (Po'pay's statue, the only one carved by a Native American, represents New Mexico in the US Capitol's National Statuary Hall); and the Voth 1903 Snake-ceremony ethnography, referenced ONLY as the documented cautionary artifact of intrusive non-consensual recording, never as a reproduction-depth source [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING].
Everything-woven (the twelve facets, each a real presence, none name-checked)
Combat routes entirely through the classified facility's apparatus — its automated defenses, its security personnel, the black-project contractor, and the counter-projection watch on the astral plane (bound astral-sentinels, sensitives forced into the sweep — the fought/evaded thing, slipped and masked rather than the community) — and through the colonial-presidio historical echo only; never through the living Pueblo peoples or the sacred sites, which are witness-and-protect zones [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0004].
Exploration is the tri-location — the sensor-mazed facility and its astral underlayer at Groom Lake, the great houses and the true-north road and the sun-dagger butte at Chaco, and the mesa-edge of the Hopi country [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 46 Southwest USA].
Discovery (the real declassified history behind the cover — the U-2, the OXCART, Project Mogul; the Ancestral Puebloan archaeoastronomy; the true stratum of the rift-research); puzzles (the astral sensor-maze and the counter-projection cat-and-mouse; the sun-dagger's solar-lunar geometry; the Chacoan alignments); mystery (what the facility actually studies behind its cover — uncovered as the rift-research) [SRC: T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry @ BE_0046].
Lore (the cover story the family inherited and stepped inside — the fence already standing over the site, occupied and not invented); trades (the Astral Projection ability at full-mastery scale; the Trade-9 inscription-sight on the petroglyph panels and the facility records); gathering (the schematic, the internal records, the coordinate off the light); side quests (the sun-dagger witnessing, the Pueblo-Revolt historical beat, the confiscated-ethnographer's-record recovery); engineering (the great-house masonry and the true-north road as documented achievements, against the facility's sensor and counter-projection engineering) [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING].
Folklore (the water-serpent via public iconography; the Hopi Snake society referenced through the FACT of its restriction, never its content — witness-depth); superstition (the story out front observed as the fence it works as in-world — kept up to keep people from looking, and stepped inside by the family) [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 17.1].
Key sites and spatial layout
Story-load-bearing sites, each having cleared a significance lens and the §4 relevance filter; geography anchors to the Research Corpus Master per the living-source Ch 44/45/46 realignment (see Decisions), never the WGM's stale scramble [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 46 Southwest USA] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)
Every fight holds the blended-mode doctrine (primary plus secondary verb, three-axis split never 100/0/0, escalation that evolves the moveset, at least two counters per signature — the sweep answered by the astral-timing window OR the Wardenclyffe/Tesla EMP-line prep carried from Ch 44, and the body-discovery risk by a pre-staged relocation OR a decoy-signature — and a Hades reward on win AND death), per the antagonist network node NW_0043 (FAMILY_BRIEFED — the operation knows what it is; the chain up runs into the nameless ledger, the patriarch dark before Ch 76) [SRC: T0_Antagonist_Network_Registry @ NW_0043].

sub-bosses (each a beat): BE_0046_S1 the Fajada Butte Sun-Dagger Guardian (Thread 7/18, decode/perceive, NOT a person; success surfaces Vimana Coordinate 3 of 6 as the vril-resonance beneath the butte, read by witnessing the light-event and the alignment, never by touching or altering the slabs, mirroring the real 1989 harm) → CH46_B08 · BE_0046_S2 "Dustdevil" the black-project security contractor (SURV/MIL human enforcer, a physical-stealth mini-boss on the Groom Lake perimeter, the paid muscle Kestrel deploys, ribbed as a man paid to guard a secret he is not cleared to know) → CH46_B02 · BE_0046_S3 the 1680 Colonial-Garrison Echo (a historical-fluctuation beat, NOT a thread; the Spanish colonial garrison — the casas reales in Santa Fe — and the mission system are the combat frame, never the Pueblo peoples per Ruling 5, and Po'pay himself is audit-only, witnessed and honored, never fought or renamed) → CH46_B10 [SRC: T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry @ BE_0046] [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # Ch 46] [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING]
reveal binding: Kestrel does not know the patriarch — every boss beat holds the chain dark above the operative; the forcing-mark behind the bound astral-sentinels stays unattributed until Ch 63; the chair Kestrel answers up to is seeded here as the family's modern surveillance arm, an off-stage architect embodied later (Ch 55), felt not named, with no target surfaced [SRC: T0_Antagonist_Network_Registry @ NW_0043] [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # THE BLIND-SPOT] [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # THE CONSTRUCT-KIT].

Key ally NPCs
Verna Talayumptewa, a Hopi Cultural Preservation Office cultural officer (RR-52-finalized name — an attested non-ceremonial Hopi family surname; screened clear of any sacred, deity, or clan term — the Ch-45 sacred-name lesson — and she is NOT a portrait of the real HCPO director whose public work informs the register) — the interpretive authority who meets the protagonist at the canyon's edge, tells her only what the Hopi decide an outsider may hold, keeps the closed door of ceremony closed, and holds the sovereign line against the salvage-ethnographer's theft (her affirmative teaching, never a lecture on the facility's cover); engaged witness-depth, never a combat target, never appropriated [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0136] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003].
Carried: the healer's child (CHAR_0002), co-witness and journal-keeper; Ana (CHAR_0017), the melee blade and here the body-guard during the astral projection — both inviolate [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0002].

HELD: ceremony referenced only through the fact of its restriction (HL_0007)
Protected-chapter combat framing (ruling 5)
Ch 46 is a Ruling-5 protected-community and protected-site chapter: no combat against the living Hopi, Zuni, Acoma, or any Pueblo nation, and all ceremony engaged at witness/existence depth ONLY — the game may show that ceremony has weight, timing, and secrecy (Ortiz's "center of time"), but NEVER reproduces, transcribes, stages, or lets the player perform it, and the Hopi Snake-Antelope ceremony is referenced only through the FACT of its restriction, never its content (the Voth 1903 ethnography is the in-world model of what NOT to do, referenced as a cautionary artifact, never a reproduction-depth source) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0007] [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 17.1]. Every fight is directed at the classified facility's apparatus — its automated defenses, its security personnel, the "Dustdevil" contractor, and the counter-projection watchers on the astral plane — and at the colonial-presidio historical echo; the sacred sites (Chaco, Fajada Butte) are witness-and-protect zones that combat and extraction route AROUND, never through, and the sun-dagger is read by witnessing, never by touching [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0004]. Po'pay is a real historical liberator, audit-only, witnessed and honored, never fought or fictionalized; the descendant nations are named precisely and rendered present-tense sovereign (never "Anasazi", never pan-Indian, never a vanished race); the interpretive authority defers to the HCPO and Hopi-authored scholarship; and the living-tradition floor binds — no synthetic voice-clone of a Pueblo cultural figure (HL_0110) and no parodic SFX of the tradition (HL_0111) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0110] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0111].
Anti-fringe / Frame-A flags
The UFO / extraterrestrial mythology — at-risk claim: aliens, recovered saucers, Roswell "alien bodies", a Dulce underground-alien-base. Canonical framing: the game REJECTS the extraterrestrial explanation outright — the real cited history is the point (the CIA's 2013 U-2 / OXCART release acknowledging Groom Lake and attributing many 1950s-60s "UFO" reports to its spy-flights, the "over half" figure held as contested; Roswell 1947 as Project Mogul, a Soviet-nuke-detection balloon train, per the 1994/1997 Air Force reports; the Bennewitz / AFOSI affair as documented intelligence-seeded alien disinformation) — the antagonist cynically OCCUPIES that pre-existing cover diegetically, while this anti-fringe rejection stays in the authorial layer and is never a player-facing debunk beat; the player-facing surfaces uncover what the facility really does (the "UFOs" being cover, disinformation, and reflected sunlight off classified hardware) [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING].
Chaco pseudo-archaeology — at-risk claim: ancient aliens, a "lost white / Atlantean race", von-Däniken "they couldn't have built it", ley-lines / Earth-grid mysticism, or the Chaco Meridian as proven fact. Canonical framing: the awe is the DOCUMENTED human achievement — the planned four-story masonry, the timber hauled over 75 km, the 50 km true-north road, the dual solar-lunar sun-dagger — built by the ancestors of the living Pueblo people; the Chaco Meridian appears only as one scholar's explicitly-disputed hypothesis (Southwest archaeologists reject it) [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING].
The living Pueblos — at-risk claim: a vanished / noble-savage "lost race", a pan-Indian blur, or the "Anasazi" exonym. Canonical framing: the Hopi, Zuni, Acoma, and the nineteen Pueblos govern, legislate, and hold ceremony TODAY (Chaco is ancestral, not abandoned), are linguistically and politically distinct nations (never interchangeable), and are named by their own names; the term "Anasazi" (a Navajo exonym the Pueblos reject) is never used — "Ancestral Puebloan" (or Hopi "Hisatsinom") [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 17.1].
Ceremony and restricted knowledge — at-risk claim: reproducing, reconstructing, or mechanizing any "secret ritual" — a fabricated Snake-ceremony, invented kiva mysteries, a "lost Pueblo magic system". Canonical framing: nothing sacred is reproduced (HL_0007); the Voth case is the explicit in-world model of what NOT to do (non-consensual recording framed as salvage — a deliberate parallel to the antagonist's own extraction), and the player is kept outside the closed knowledge [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0007].
The forced astral-sentinels — at-risk read: that the watchers patrolling the plane are the Pueblo community's own guardians, or that the sensitives bound into the sweep are drawn from the descendant nations. Canonical framing: they are NOT the community and NOT Pueblo — they are stolen and bound sensitives the family has wrenched onto the astral plane and forced into watch-work (a first modern taste of the family FORCING a supernatural asset, deployed UNATTRIBUTED; the forcing is the crime and the bound thing is a victim), while the sacred water-serpent and every living Pueblo tradition are witness-and-protect zones combat routes around, never through; the recurring forcing-mark is a vril-forensics tell held in the authorial and mechanical layer, never a player-facing lecture [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # THE CONSTRUCT-KIT] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0004].
Three-layer surfacing
L1 self-contained: a stealth thriller — astral-infiltrate a classified facility, out-run the counter-projection watchers, map a rift you cannot yet close, and read a coordinate off the resonance beneath an ancient sky-instrument (witnessed, never touched); a complete action-adventure needing no metaphysics [SRC: T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry @ BE_0046].
L2 investigatable: the reading layer — the CIA 2013 U-2 / OXCART declassification and the Project Mogul and Bennewitz record (the real declassified history the cover was built over), the Chacoan great-house and sun-dagger scholarship (Sofaer, Lekson, Frazier, Plog), and the Pueblo-Revolt history (Knaut) — read via the inscription-sight at journal and Grimoire depth; the Hopi content held to HCPO-priority and Hopi-authored scholarship, the Snake ceremony referenced-not-reproduced [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 46 Southwest USA].
L3 metaphysical-as-real, never declared: the rift-technology and Astral Projection are the substrate operating as real — consciousness-substrate-independence at full mastery, and a literal rift the family cannot control, surfaced through the mechanic and never declared; the cover out front is itself the lesson — the sensational story hides the real substrate, and what she perceives beneath it is the rift; the Pueblo water-serpent sits in the substrate as a Thread-2 fact honored at witness-depth; the bound astral-sentinels are the first unattributed sign that the family does not only field paid guns but FORCES supernatural assets — a hand beneath the apparatus, felt in the shared forcing-mark and never named (that hand resolves only at Ch 63), and the surveillance arm that designed the modern watch is a chair seeded off-stage, not a face; nothing of the thesis is spoken and there is no Grand-Sage hint (HL_0043) [SRC: ESOTERIC_GROUNDING] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043].
Asset anchors
creatures_and_fauna — no permitted fauna-combat spotlight (a stealth/infiltration node); the facility's automated defenses are apparatus and constructs (never living beings), and the counter-projection watch is a set of bound astral-sentinels — sensitives the family has taken and forced onto the plane (a forced construct deployed unattributed, carrying the recurring forcing-mark; never the facility's willing personnel, never the community, and never the Pueblo peoples), slipped and masked rather than required to be killed; the water-serpent is honored public iconography, never a combat target or a summonable entity [SRC: T3_Familiars_Named] [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # THE CONSTRUCT-KIT] [POPULATE→T0_Creature_Roster].
architecture_set_dressing — the Groom Lake facility (the sensor grid, the perimeter, the astral underlayer), the Chaco great houses and the Great North Road and Fajada Butte (referenced with dignity, the butte protected and un-climbed), and the Hopi mesa-edge and the 1680 presidio (the historical layer) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 46 Southwest USA] [POPULATE→T0_Theme_Registry].
material_palette and style_register — a classified-facility contemporary register (the sensor-tech, the black-project sterility), a distinct astral-plane register for the projected infiltration and the counter-projection watchers, and a grounded archaeological / high-desert register for Chaco (the masonry, the light on the spiral); protected sacred content referenced not reproduced [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 46 Southwest USA].
music_mood — a taut surveillance-thriller tension for the facility, a spare uncanny register for the astral cat-and-mouse, and a vast high-desert stillness for Chaco and the sun-dagger; the referenced-not-reproduced discipline on any Pueblo sound (no ceremony cue reproduced); theme_refs the cover-story-and-uncovering motif, the touch-nothing/witness motif, and the taking-behind-a-face motif [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 46 Southwest USA] [POPULATE→T0_Theme_Registry].
voice_and_crowd — Kestrel's bloodless overwatch register (the watcher who has watched everything and understood nothing), "Dustdevil"'s paid-muscle register, the HCPO officer's exacting witness-depth register (the community's own voice, keeping the closed door closed), and the ambient of the facility and the high desert; per-NPC registers deferred to the Voice registry, with the HL_0110 living-tradition synthetic-voice default binding — no voice-clone of a Pueblo cultural figure [SRC: T1_Build_Pipeline_Contracts # 9.6] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0110] [POPULATE→T0_Voice_Registry].
sfx_substrate — the facility-sensor and astral-plane and high-desert terrain enum, the astral-projection and counter-projection environmental ambient, the Trade-9 inscription-sight on the petroglyph panels and the facility records, and the sun-dagger light-event register; the §17.1 living-community discipline binds any Pueblo or ceremony cue (referenced not reproduced, no parodic SFX per HL_0111) [SRC: T1_Build_Pipeline_Contracts # 9.6] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0111] [POPULATE→T0_SFX_Registry].
fragment carrier and sacred objects — the INSC_77H_CH46_FRAGMENT inscription-spine fragment (the Chaco petroglyph panels and the facility's internal records read at high mastery, the L2-becomes-Preparation ammunition of the infiltration); sacred_objects_and_props include the recovered rift schematic and the facility records (the case) and the confiscated ethnographer's field record (the moral counterexample), and the sun-dagger site and the water-serpent iconography (referenced, honored, never reproduced, moved, or appropriated) [SRC: T0_Inscription_Spine @ INSC_77H_CH46_FRAGMENT].
Mechanical anchors
dominant_combat_mode stealth (the astral infiltration and the counter-projection cat-and-mouse are the chapter's signature — the leave-no-trace projection past the sensor walls, the body-guarding the prep) — mode-variety note: Ch 44 astral, Ch 45 environmental, Ch 46 stealth, so no two consecutive share a dominant mode (HL_0049 holds), and the five-window Ch 42-46 (environmental, puzzle_routed, astral, environmental, stealth) carries four distinct dominant modes, clearing HL_0049's three-distinct floor; intensity PEAK — the rift-chain-opening infiltration and the first modern-world full-mastery-scale astral application carry the chapter's spike (Ch 44 valley, Ch 45 standard, Ch 46 peak is a clean rise, HL_0048's no-three-consecutive-peaks rule held); the five Pillar-1.12 beats are all present — combat (the facility apparatus, the contractor, the counter-projection watchers, the presidio echo), puzzle (the astral sensor-maze, the sun-dagger geometry, the Chacoan alignments), learning (the real declassified history, the Ancestral Puebloan achievement, the rift), character (the healer's-child co-witness, Ana as the body-guard, the HCPO officer's gate-kept witness), and transformation (the facility's cover named and its real work uncovered, the rift mapped and the chain opened, the coordinate read off the resonance beneath the light) — mode_variety_check set to combat=Y;puzzle=Y;learning=Y;character=Y;transformation=Y [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_46] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0049] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0048].
main_boss_win_condition perceive — map the rift apparatus (infiltrate-astral primary, perceive secondary, axis 25/35/40, three phases, escalation evolving across planes, never swapping); the payoff detonates at Ch 58 [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # Ch 46]; agility_course a facility-and-astral traversal (sensor-grid-and-projected-plane geometry) — biome-rotated against Ch 44's metaverse-canyon and Ch 45's mound-and-plaza courses, with a Puzzle variant threading the sun-dagger alignment (HL_0079) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0079].
abilities_unlocked none newly unlocked, but the Astral Projection ability (A_C_001, the Crown-seat Vril ability — NOT a trade) takes its FIRST modern-world full-mastery-scale application here (its second career peak after the Ch 15 Egypt full-mastery debut and following the Ch 38 Atlantis and Ch 44 metaverse and Ch 45 preparatory applications), and the Wardenclyffe/Tesla EMP-line ability anchor is carried (the sweep counter); no new tier threshold, framed as the continued reclamation of the elven birthright [SRC: T0_Ability_Tree_Registry @ A_C_001] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0026].
vril_sites none newly anchored — the Ch-46 vril layer is the classified rift-substrate the facility researches (the human program the cover story hides) and the witness-depth Chacoan archaeoastronomy; the Fajada Butte sun-dagger is read for Vimana Coordinate 3 of 6 as the vril-resonance beneath the butte by witnessing, not by anchoring or touching the protected site [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0016].
scripts: the Chaco petroglyph panels and the sun-dagger alignment-as-script and the classified facility's internal records read via the Trade-9 inscription-sight (a modern-world application, Inscription being ancient-only with no modern home base — its ancient homes are Ch 15 Egypt and Ch 29 Sámi); no new mortal-world writing-system debuts; the water-serpent iconography referenced as a living public form, never transcribed into an invented script, and no ceremonial content transcribed [SRC: T1_Languages_and_Script_Master].
inscription_spine: INSC_77H_CH46_FRAGMENT (the Ch-46 hidden-inscription fragment — the Chaco petroglyph and facility-record corpus read at high mastery, the L2-becomes-Preparation ammunition of the infiltration) [SRC: T0_Inscription_Spine @ INSC_77H_CH46_FRAGMENT].
schools: no new school debuts; SCH_001 through SCH_008 carried [SRC: T0_School_Registry @ SCH_008].

trades: no new trade home roots this chapter (the ten trades carry — Trade 9 Inscription remains ancient-only at Ch 15 Egypt and Ch 29 Sámi, applied here as a modern-world application); the chapter's signature capability is the Astral Projection Vril ability (A_C_001) at its first modern-world full-mastery-scale application, NOT a trade [SRC: T1_Trades_Master # 3.9].

main_quest_beat the rift apparatus mapped and the SURV/MIL cover named (what the facility really does uncovered on the record), Vimana Coordinate 3 of 6 read as the vril-resonance beneath the Fajada Butte sun-dagger, the rift-chain node 1 opened (Ch 54/56/58), and the Pueblo-Revolt and ceremony-restriction witness beats held; side_questlines the sun-dagger witnessing, the Pueblo-Revolt historical beat, and the confiscated-record recovery (path_bucket all, none gating) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0032].

rewards per-quest reward map authored in-intent — the rift apparatus mapped and the SURV/MIL cover documented (the journal's rift-and-cover entry), Vimana Coordinate 3 of 6 read, the rift-chain node 1 opened, and the descendant communities' witness honored; loot and seed anchors deferred [POPULATE→T0_RNG_Drop_Table] [POPULATE→T0_Quest_Seed_Registry].
encounter_mode/zone the astral facility infiltration and the counter-projection cat-and-mouse (stealth / astral) at Groom Lake; the sun-dagger and Chacoan-alignment reading (puzzle / perceive) at Chaco and Fajada Butte; the Pueblo-Revolt fluctuation (historical / witness) and the ceremony-restriction witness (character / learning) at the Hopi mesa-edge — consistent with Key-sites and the stealth dominant mode [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 46 Southwest USA].

The living-Pueblo and ceremony-care depiction — RESOLVED (§17.1 witness-depth + the deep-research care findings): the Hopi, Zuni, Acoma, and the nineteen Pueblos are named precisely, present-tense sovereign (never "Anasazi" — "Ancestral Puebloan" / Hopi "Hisatsinom"; never pan-Indian), distinct language families; ALL ceremony is witness/existence depth only (never reproduced, transcribed, staged, or performed), the Hopi Snake-Antelope ceremony referenced ONLY through the fact of its restriction with the Voth 1903 ethnography as the cautionary artifact (referenced-not-reproduced); the interpretive authority defers to the HCPO and Hopi-authored scholarship; the water-serpent (Awanyu/Kolowisi/Paaloloqangw) surfaced only via public iconography; and the sun-dagger read by witnessing, never touching (the 1989-harm ethic) [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 17.1].
The extraterrestrial-mythology handling — RESOLVED (CVD §17.1 discipline + the anti-fringe reframe): no extraterrestrial content, no Roswell invention; the real cited history is surfaced as L2 wonder (the CIA 2013 U-2/OXCART release, Roswell as Project Mogul per the 1994/1997 Air Force reports, the Bennewitz/AFOSI record), and the antagonist cynically OCCUPIES the pre-existing cover story diegetically; the anti-fringe rejection of the extraterrestrial explanation is held to the authorial Anti-fringe/Frame-A block and is NEVER a player-facing debunk beat — the player-facing surfaces uncover what the facility really does and surface the real declassified history, not a lecture on the page [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING].
Po'pay and the Pueblo Revolt — RESOLVED (the real-person audit-only discipline): Po'pay (Ohkay Owingeh) is a documented liberator, witnessed and honored, never fought, fictionalized, or villainized; the Pueblo Revolt is rendered as the disciplined, successful self-determination it was (Knaut), and the only colonial-echo combat frame is the Spanish colonial garrison (the casas reales) and the mission apparatus, never the Pueblo people (Ruling 5); "presidio" is used as gameplay shorthand for that 1680 colonial military-religious apparatus (the formal Santa Fe presidio postdates the 1692-93 reconquest) [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING].
The Thread-18 naming drift — CORRECTED + FLAGGED (SYSTEMIC living-source): the canonical Thread 18 is "Sacred Mountains / Axis Locations" (T1_Threads_22 heading + T0_Thread_Registry), and this entry files the Chacoan sacred axis (the true-north Great North Road, Fajada as a sacred axis-location, the center place, the Vimana Coordinate 3) there; the string "Thread 18 Historical Redemption" is a substrate typo appearing in the RCM, T1_Threads_22 (the Ch 49 line), and BOSS_PERSONAS (the Ch 46 sub-boss), and the Pueblo Revolt is correctly re-filed here as a historical-fluctuation MECHANIC beat (not a thread); flagged for the RR-52 bulk living-source cleanup [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 18].
The RCM Ch 46 trade-numbering errors — CORRECTED + FLAGGED (SYSTEMIC living-source): the RCM L4757 reads "Trade 3 Inscription" and "Trade 7 Astral Projection," both wrong — Inscription is Trade 9 (T1_Trades_Master §3.9), Trade 7 is Culinary Arts (§3.7), and Astral Projection is the Crown-seat Vril ability A_C_001, not a trade. This is a SYSTEMIC RCM error appearing at Ch 44, Ch 45, AND Ch 46; this entry uses the correct forms, and the RCM (and the BOSS_PERSONAS "Trade 7 Astral Projection") errors are flagged for a BULK living-source cleanup at RR-52 [SRC: T1_Trades_Master # 3.9].
The Chapter_Index / WGM region scramble — CORRECTED + FLAGGED (living-source): the live Chapter_Index CH_46 region_primary was UNDER-populated (only "Area 51, Nevada Southwest"), missing the Chaco and Hopi content the RCM and BOSS_PERSONAS place here (the flip side of the Ch 45 mis-population, where Ch 46's Chaco/Hopi had been mis-filed into the Ch 45 row); the scatter aligns region_primary to the RCM tri-location Groom Lake + Chaco + Hopi. The geography authority T1_World_Geography_Master v2.3 carries the same Ch 44/45/46 scramble (Chaco/Southwest under its "Ch 45" heading), so this entry cites the RCM (not the WGM) as the Chaco/Southwest region authority; the WGM realignment is flagged for the same living-source cleanup as the Chapter_Index. The scatter also realigns the Chapter_Index CH_46 thread field to the entry's grounded set (adding T18 Sacred Mountains / Axis Locations for the Chacoan sacred axis, reconciling the stale T04/T12), flagged for the same RR-52 cleanup [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 46 Southwest USA].
No cardinal fork is open — the region (per the RCM authority), era, operational-type, and thread set are canonical (RCM, BOSS_PERSONAS, T1_Threads_22); the HCPO officer is named Verna Talayumptewa, RR-52 Layer-3-finalized per the delegated naming authority (screened clear of any sacred/deity/clan term) [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_46].
The v3.1 typing of this entry — RESOLVED-APPLIED (v3 conversion, 2026-07-15; Josh-override-able at any RR): the twenty-block v2.5 form above is restructured in place to the beat→fork→state graph per the V3_CONVERSION_RUNBOOK; every typed beat/fork/site/SQ/scene row traces to content already asserted in the preserved v2.5 blocks (join-and-type, no new canon authored) [SRC: SPINE_SCHEMA_v3].
The Thread-12 Pueblo-Revolt mislabel — CORRECTED + FLAGGED (SYSTEMIC living-source, v3 conversion finding): T1_Threads_22's own §8 Ch-46 per-chapter index line (and the T0_Thread_Grid THREAD_12/CH_46 row it seeds, progression_stage ANCHOR) assigns "Thread 12 Pueblo Revolt 1680... resistance-pattern anchor" to this chapter — but the canonical Thread 12 is THE ORACLE / DIVINATION (T1_Threads_22 heading; SQ4/SQ5-owned), unrelated to colonial resistance. This is a SECOND, independent mislabel in the same Ch-46 index line beyond the Thread-18 drift flagged above (that one via BOSS_PERSONAS' sub-boss row and the RCM/Ch-49 line; this one via T1_Threads_22's own §8 index and the Thread_Grid row it populated). Per this entry's own pre-existing resolution, the Pueblo Revolt is typed in the v3 beat graph as a mechanic-only historical-fluctuation beat (CH46_B10, sub_boss:BE_0046_S3) carrying NO thread tag — neither the wrong Thread 12 nor the wrong Thread 18 — and T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry's own BE_0046.sources field already agrees ("Thread 18 = Sacred Mountains/Axis Locations, so the Revolt is a fluctuation mechanic NOT a thread"). Flagged for the same RR-52 bulk living-source cleanup as the Thread-18 drift [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 12] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_12] [SRC: T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry @ BE_0046].
The THREAD_18/CH_46 Thread_Grid gap — FLAGGED (v3 conversion finding, queued for the orchestrator's serialized landing): T0_Thread_Grid carries no THREAD_18 row for CH_46 at all (only THREAD_01/02/03/04/07/11/12), even though T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry's own BE_0046.threads field already lists "T03;T07;T18" and this entry's preserved Threads-advancing block carries a full Thread-18 (Sacred Mountains / Axis Locations) bullet for the Chacoan sacred axis. The v3 beat graph types Thread 18 at CH46_B07 and CH46_B08 with stage ANCHOR — matching every other THREAD_18 row's stage across the registry (a placement judgment the runbook permits, grounded in the Thread_Grid's own established pattern, not an invented value); the missing registry row itself is queued as a registry correction (see payload) rather than written here [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_18] [SRC: T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry @ BE_0046].
The C_L_005 (Electromagnetic Pulse) ability — FLAGGED, not typed as a systems ref (v3 conversion finding, two stacked issues, neither resolved here): first, a TOOLING gap — harness/check_spine_graph.py's ability-roster loader filters T0_Ability_Tree_Registry ids against the pattern A_\w+, which excludes the registry's own layer-C ids (C_L_005 "Electromagnetic Pulse," layer C, is a real row but never enters the FK-checked roster, so any ability:C_L_005 systems citation fails the gate as "not in its registry" though the id is genuinely registered); second, a genuine CONTENT ambiguity — the registry rows C_L_005 with unlock_chapter_ref Ch_46 and prerequisite "Engineering 100 Adeptus Minor plus Area 51," but this entry's own Mechanical anchors block states abilities_unlocked "none newly unlocked... no new tier threshold" for Ch 46, framing the Wardenclyffe/Tesla EMP-line ability as PREP "carried from Ch 44" instead. Given both, the v3 beat graph keeps the EMP-line counter as prose only (CH46_B05's reveal line) rather than a systems tag, sidestepping the FK gate failure without propagating either the registry's Ch_46-unlock claim or the spine's Ch_44-carry claim into new typed state. Both issues reported, neither adjudicated [SRC: T0_Ability_Tree_Registry @ C_L_005].
The v3 typing of the exposure-method fork — RESOLVED (v3 conversion, 2026-07-15; Josh-override-able at any RR): the v2.5 entry names four options with no explicit per-option direction beyond the three-label path_state_at_chapter_end {good, neutral, bad}. v3 keys "carry the record to the public-release arc" generative (+Substantial, mirroring the CH_39 precedent for a full-restoration option) and "seize the schematic as an instrument" corrosive (−Substantial, the symmetric mirror per the runbook's delta-symmetry rule); "map and move on" is kept neutral (~0, detached non-engagement); "hold the intel for leverage" is read as the smaller self-interested corrosive option (−small, withholding the record from open use for personal advantage, distinct from the outright appropriation of the seize option) rather than folded into either the generative or neutral rows — a placement judgment, not a new claim, since the v2.5 text itself orders it between the fullest generative option and the neutral one. The mark is keyed to hopi_nation (the specific granted-witness relationship with Verna Talayumptewa/HCPO), never a collapsed pan-Pueblo community id, consistent with this entry's own insistence that the Hopi, Zuni, Acoma, and the other Pueblos are distinct nations, never interchangeable [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 5.1].
The CH_46 Thread_Grid row pair — RESOLVED-APPLIED (the D-TG-45 ruled pattern, Josh-ratified 2026-07-15, landed at its deferred structural pass): the two drift items flagged above are discharged and the Chapter_Index cell mirroring them is reconciled in the same pass. THREAD_12/CH_46 moves from ANCHOR to NOT_PRESENT — the Pueblo Revolt is genuine Ch-46 material but is not a thread, and the canonical Thread 12 (The Oracle / Divination) stages no Ch-46 event; per the D-TG-45 form the row is retained as an explicit not-present cell carrying its own explanation, and the Revolt content stays where this entry already put it, the mechanic-only historical-fluctuation beat CH46_B10 (sub_boss BE_0046_S3, no thread tag). The missing THREAD_18/CH_46 row is created at stage ANCHOR for the Chacoan sacred axis, matching this entry's ratified Threads block, the beat graph's THREAD_18:ANCHOR typing at CH46_B07 and CH46_B08, BE_0046.threads (T03;T07;T18), and the Chapter_Index's own standing T18:A; it is filed to T1_Threads_22 §2-3 Thread 18 rather than to the §8 Ch-46 index line that seeds both errors and stays queued for RR-52. The chapter-level "Weavings active: 13" tail re-homes onto that new row, the form THREAD_18/CH_36 and THREAD_18/CH_63 already carry. The Chapter_Index CH_46 thread_anchors_complete cell moves T12:A to T12:NP, mirroring the grid as T11:NP already mirrors THREAD_11 — a derived value the FK cannot police, since it bridges only the thread number and never the stage suffix. The stale T02:A here and T13:A at CH_45 are logged for the RR-52 column sweep. No cardinal canon moves: no cell here is a Thread-3 cell and this chapter's THREAD_03 row scores CONFRONTATION, so the singular Ch-57 total absence is untouched [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_12] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_18] [SRC: T0_Thread_Registry @ T12] [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_46] [SRC: T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry @ BE_0046].
