Chapter 45 — Central USA (Cahokia and the Woodhenge): The City That Was Never Lost
Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (authored fresh to docs/proposals/CHAPTER_BUILD_TARGET.md and the v2.5 twenty-block anchor-hub schema, grounded on the RCM Ch 45 substrate, BOSS_PERSONAS, and a build-time deep-research pass on Cahokia, the SECC, and the Moundbuilder-myth), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). This is the game's FIRST pure VRIL-standalone node — there is NO Velheim / Council presence here (NW_0042 UNAWARE); it carries elevated §17.1 care on living Native descendant nations, the sacred SECC horned-serpent iconography, and the affirmative record of Native authorship and living continuity (the racist Moundbuilder myth held to the authorial anti-fringe layer, never repeated and never a player-facing beat). The reveal is LIFTED (the House of Velheim is nameable) but the family is ABSENT this chapter; the patriarch is held for Ch 76 and the thesis for Ch 77 (§17.9). The Great Plains LENGTHEN is routed to the Ch 62 Americas revisit per the RCM fallback (see Decisions). Drafted is not canonical.

operational type VRIL operational-type standalone (NOT a Council sector operation) — the FIRST canonical VRIL-standalone encounter, distinct from the Ch 39-44 Council operations (PHARMACEUTICAL, FINANCIAL, EXTRACTIVE); there is no Velheim hand here, only a site so saturated with centuries of concentrated devotion that, over the unstewarded Vacant-Quarter centuries, it grew its own counterfeit god [SRC: T0_Antagonist_Network_Registry @ NW_0042] [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 45 Central USA].
canonical_hard_line_flag FALSE — not one of the eighteen hard-line nodes; a VRIL-standalone environmental/discovery node carrying elevated §17.1 care (the descendant nations are inviolate and never combat targets; the sacred horned-serpent iconography is the protected echo the parasite only apes; the racist Moundbuilder myth is never repeated and never a player-facing beat, the affirmative Native-authorship record surfaced instead) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 17.1].

Continuity anchor (SSBL §9.3 — Ch 45 start state = Ch 44 end state)
The protagonist reaches the American Bottom eighteen and holding the young-adult plateau (internal age designer-only, never surfaced) [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_45].
Companions: the healer's child (CHAR_0002), the primary companion and journal-keeper (the evidentiary journal building toward the Ch 48 public-release deliberation — the decision at Ch 56, the release at Ch 57, per T3_Core_Characters); Ana (CHAR_0017), the melee blade [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0002].
Identity concealment CONCEALMENT_WITH_HOSTILE_RECOGNITION carries, but the modern hunt goes quiet here: this is the first site with no watcher on it, no Velheim operative and no ledger — a relief-from-the-hunt beat (the reveal remains LIFTED, the House nameable, but the family is simply absent; the patriarch held for Ch 76, the thesis for Ch 77) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043].
The Vimana hunt is OPEN with Coordinate 1 of 6 in hand (read at the Drakensberg, Ch 41); Coordinate 2 of 6 is read HERE as the vril-resonance surfaces beneath the site on the autumn-equinox sunrise at the Woodhenge (off the substrate, never a bearing the builders set) — the six-coordinate hunt advancing toward the Ch 55 Vimana [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_45].
Ability state: the Astral Projection ability (A_C_001, the Crown-seat Vril ability, NOT a trade) is practiced preparatorily at the apex of Monk's Mound here, in preparation for its first full-mastery-scale application at Ch 46; the Trade-9 inscription-sight is carried and applied to the site (a modern-world application, Inscription being an ancient-only trade with no modern home base) [SRC: T0_Ability_Tree_Registry @ A_C_001].
Body prose
Cahokia rises out of the American Bottom the way few places on the continent do: the largest city north of Mexico — bigger, in its hour, than the London of its day — a planned metropolis of a hundred and twenty mounds around a plaza you could lose a village in, with a solar calendar of red-cedar posts and a paramount earthwork so vast the eye keeps refusing its size. Ancestral Native people raised it, by hand, basket by basket, and then, for reasons the scholars still honestly argue over — flood, drought, the slow arithmetic of too many people and too few good years — they dispersed, south and west, into the nations who carry the memory still. Nobody vanished. The ground keeps the proof of it: an unbroken material line running from the mound-fill down into the living peoples whose ancestors laid every basket-load. The city stands in that unbroken line, and its keepers are its living descendants. She has come to that continuity by a stranger road.
Because something is feeding here. Not a family, for once — no watcher, no ledger, no operative in a good coat. This is the first place she has walked in years with nobody hunting her, and the quiet of it is almost the strangest thing about it. What is here instead is a hunger the site grew by itself. Ten thousand people once aimed their whole devotion at this ground — the sun brought down the posts, the serpent read into the copper and the shell, the plaza roaring at a chunkey stone — and when the last of them walked away and no one was left to tend it, all that concentrated reverence pooled and, over the empty centuries, curdled. It learned the shape the devotion had been aimed at. It put that shape on. What waits at the top of Monk's Mound wears a stolen skin — the horned serpent, the antlered water-master, the Underwater Panther that rules the deep and balances the Thunderers (kindred Beneath-World water-powers the site's own art often twins) — wears it because that image is the most potent thing this place ever made, and a counterfeit needs a true coin to copy. But those powers are balance, the ordered underworld half of a whole cosmos; the thing on the mound is only appetite in their clothes.
So she does not fight it the way she has fought anything. You cannot swing at the sacred; the whole danger is that it is wearing the sacred, and a careless blow would land on the real image, not the false face. She reads instead — Vril Sight against Ground Sense, cross-checking — and the mimic reads her back, learns the diagnostic she just used and fakes it next, so the fight is a duel of who sees whom. And she learns, the deeper she goes, how it survives. It survives by being mistaken for the real thing — by wearing a shape so potent that whoever feels it takes the counterfeit for the true power it copies. The borrowed skin is its whole defense: while the genuine image and the false face read alike, the thing cannot be told from what it stole. Which means force alone could never open the fight: a blow thrown while the skin still holds lands on the sacred, not the false face. The seeing has to come first — clear enough to hold the true horned-serpent apart from the mimic and strip the borrowed skin away — and only once the forgery stands naked, with nothing sacred left on it to shield behind, is it hers to strike down and the real image hers to give back.
And she does not do the seeing alone, because the authority in this chapter is not hers to hold and never was. She reads the true stratigraphy — the unbroken material line from the mound-fill to the living nations — and beside her a tribal historic-preservation officer, Osage, whose people's own oral tradition and whose linguists' reconstruction both run this ground back down the Ohio to here, stands at the marker and says the sentence that settles the shape for good: the descendants of the people who built this are still very much alive and well. In her voice the true image holds firm, and the counterfeit, with nothing left to be mistaken for, thins toward the hollow thing it always was. She is careful with the nations even here: the Osage hold the strongest claim but not the only one, the Caddo built their own mounds and came by trade not descent, the later Illinois clan that lent the site its name never built a thing. She lets the differences stand. Pan-anything is just another way of not looking.
The forgery does not thin quietly. Stripped of the borrowed skin, with nothing sacred left to shield behind, it stops pretending to be balance and shows the only thing it ever was — a coil of naked appetite; and she knows the register the instant it turns on her, because she has met this hunger before, wearing other scales. It is an old feeling by now, a coil she keeps meeting in new skins, though she does not pretend to know whether it is one thing that keeps finding her or only the same shape the world grows over and over wherever devotion is left to curdle and go hungry. Here, in the Beneath-World dark under the mound, it is at last hers to fight straight — not the water-master who rules the deep and steadies the Thunderers, never that being, only the counterfeit that wore his face. And she fights it in a key carried in the Ho-Chunk and Siouan hero-cycles and the shared Braden iconography of this ground: the contest cycle of Red Horn and his kin, who face the giants down at the ball-ground and the wrestling-ground, trial after trial. She borrows the grammar, never the hero's name — the culture-hero's grammar in which the monstrous is met head-on and beaten by nerve and skill and not by luck. She holds the way the seeing taught her, reading each false lunge a half-beat before it fakes her own last diagnostic back at her, and where the borrowed skin once turned her blows onto the sacred there is now only the forgery to receive them — and she drives the strike down through the false coil until it breaks.
When it is unmasked at last — the corrupted sun-sign, the hollow post-beaker glow, the copper falcon with nothing behind its eyes all falling away — she does not kill a god. She purges a false one and gives the true image back its dignity, and the horned serpent surfaces clean, the balanced water-power of a real and human and Native inheritance, restored to the people who never stopped keeping it. On the Woodhenge's line the equinox sun comes up dead east and seems to rise out of the front of the great mound, and in that moment she feels the vril-resonance surface beneath the ground — the second coordinate, read off the substrate under the site, never a mark the builders set there. The city was never lost. Its keepers never left it, and now the place wears its own true shape again.
Threads advancing
Thread 2 (serpent), pre-Columbian NORTH-AMERICAN modern PEAK — the Mississippian Great Horned/Antlered Serpent and the Underwater Panther (the Beneath-World water-being commonly known by the Anishinaabe-derived scholarly label Mishipeshu, not presumed the Dhegiha-Siouan nations' own name for it), the water-and-underworld cosmological principle held across many nations and central to the SECC iconographic program (Townsend 2004); here the serpent's register is BALANCE, the ordered underworld half of a two-part cosmos in eternal equilibrium with the Thunderers — precisely the balance the parasite violates by stealing the form and dropping it. The rung is a FOUGHT one: once the seeing strips the mimic of the sacred skin, the naked forgery is met and struck down in a real Beneath-World purge (restraint-then-strike, staged in the Red-Horn-and-the-giants contest register), closing the New-World horned-serpent lattice opened at the Blue Ridge (Ch 43 Uktena) — held as a Thread-2 MOTIF lattice across distinct living traditions, each serpent its OWN authentic being and never subordinated to one source; the light felt-recurrence (a coil she has met wearing other scales) rides on the COUNTERFEIT / the appetite it is, never on the honored Underwater-Panther, and is carried as protagonist-side perception, never a declared single dragon [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 2] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_02].
Thread 5 (World Tree / World Axis), civic-scale earthwork PEAK — Monk's Mound as the paramount axis of the city, the largest earthen mound north of Mexico, the World-Axis register in monumental earth (Weaving 13, Sacred Architecture, active at peak) [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 5].
Thread 7 (Sacred Numerology / Gematria — here in its archaeoastronomy / solar-calendar register) — the Woodhenge red-cedar timber-circle solar calendar (Wittry): the equinox sunrise framed over Monk's Mound, the latitude-corrected offset observation post, the solstice sightlines; with a light, witness-depth rhyme to the Skidi Pawnee lodge-as-cosmos and star-chart tradition (Chamberlain 1982) — two Central-Continent cultures that engineered structures to hold the sky (the Pawnee touch kept feather-light; the Morning Star ceremony entirely off-stage) [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 7].
Historical-record / redemption (the record-and-continuity beat) — a discovery-and-decode advance whose payoff is restoration: the true material continuity read the way the 1894 Smithsonian survey established it (the unbroken line from mound-fill to living nations) and the descendant nations' living testimony, restoring the record (the payoff is "the people who built this never went away") [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING].
Thread 3 (Antagonist Family) NOT PRESENT — this is the first pure VRIL-standalone node; there is no Velheim operation here, and the antagonist-family thread goes dark for the chapter (a deliberate no-watcher beat), the wakȟáŋ / Great-Plains Thread-1 material routed with the Plains LENGTHEN to Ch 62 [SRC: T0_Antagonist_Network_Registry @ NW_0042].
Civilizational marks (the builders-of-knowledge layer, §9.5 mandatory)
Cahokia itself — the largest pre-Columbian city north of Mexico: Monk's Mound (the largest earthen mound north of Mexico, roughly 30 m in four terraces, built in as many as ten staged episodes), the roughly 50-acre engineered Grand Plaza, a two-mile bastioned palisade rebuilt to enclose ever-smaller ground as the city contracted, and around 120 mounds (about 80 surviving); planned urbanism, astronomy, and continent-spanning trade, all built by ancestral Native Americans [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 45 Central USA].
The Woodhenge solar calendar — Warren Wittry's red-cedar timber circles (at least five, Woodhenge I-V), a horizon-calendar tracking solstice, equinox, and cross-quarter sunrise, with the observation post offset to correct for the site's latitude and a ceremonial sun-motif beaker recovered from a post pit (archaeoastronomy, not ley-lines) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 45 Central USA].
The SECC iconographic program (Townsend 2004) — Ramey Incised pottery carrying cosmological water/serpent/bird motifs into ordinary and ceremonial life, Braden-style engraved marine-shell gorgets and cups, and repoussé copper falcon-warrior plates (Etowah, Spiro, Moundville); the claim that the Braden style ORIGINATED at Cahokia is CONTESTED (disputed by a 2022-23 reassessment) and is held as open [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].
Chunkey — Cahokia's mass spectator sport and diplomatic instrument (the "Pax Cahokiana"), the discoidal-and-spear game that drew roaring plaza crowds and survived into the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries among Mississippian-descendant nations (Catlin painted a Mandan match in 1832): a mark of living continuity carried into the present by the builders' descendants [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 45 Central USA].
The living descendant nations, precisely differentiated — the Osage Nation (the strongest documented ancestral connection, Dhegiha-Siouan oral tradition plus Robert Rankin's Dhegiha linguistic reconstruction, presented as convergent evidence not a clean genealogy) and the Quapaw (Dhegiha, down-the-Ohio); the Caddo Nation (a SEPARATE Caddoan-Mississippian tradition with their OWN mounds, linked to Cahokia by trade, not descended from it); the Ho-Chunk (a direct Cahokia link scholarly-inconclusive); the Kickapoo and the naming Illinois-Confederation clan (later arrivals, not builders); routed through the descendant-community CONSULTATION frame the real institutions use (tribal historic-preservation officers, the University of Illinois Cahokia NAGPRA Project, the eleven-nation park-feasibility consultation of 2019), and present-tense sovereign — the Sugarloaf Mound, the last mound in St. Louis, rematriated to the Osage in 2024 [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 17.1].
Everything-woven (the twelve facets, each a real presence, none name-checked)
Combat routes entirely through the VRIL-standalone parasite, its counterfeit constructs, and the residue-echoes it animates — never a descendant community, never a steward, and never the sacred serpent itself; the target is always the MIMIC, the false skin, not the true image, and the fight now includes a real FOUGHT Beneath-World strike-phase once the seeing strips the stolen skin (restraint-then-strike), still landing on the COUNTERFEIT alone and never on the sacred Underwater-Panther [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0004].
Exploration is the site as playable ground — the terraces of Monk's Mound, the Grand Plaza and the chunkey yard, the Woodhenge circle, the contracting palisade, and Sugarloaf Mound in the modern city [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 45 Central USA].
Discovery (the SECC cosmology, the Woodhenge archaeoastronomy, and the true stratigraphy that proves Native authorship); puzzles (the adversarial-perception duel that distinguishes the genuine echo from the mimic; the Woodhenge solar-alignment; the true-stratigraphy-and-continuity decode) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 45 Central USA].
Mystery (what the parasite is, and the genuinely open scholarly contests — the collapse cause, the population scale — preserved as unsolved); lore (the horned serpent and the Underwater Panther, the Beneath-World water-powers of the SECC honored at witness-depth); trades (the Trade-9 inscription-sight applied to the iconography and the record-and-continuity marker; the Astral Projection ability practiced at the mound apex); gathering (the documentary record and the site survey) [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].
Side quests (the chunkey contest against a residue-echo; the Woodhenge re-truing; the Sugarloaf rematriation witness beat; the record-and-continuity witness beat with the tribal preservation officer); engineering (the mound-building and the Woodhenge horizon-calendar as documented achievements); folklore (the horned serpent, the Thunderers, the Piasa — witness-depth); superstition (the placation and respect the water-power has always required, observed, never mocked) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 45 Central USA].
Key sites and spatial layout
Story-load-bearing sites, each having cleared a significance lens and the §4 relevance filter; geography anchors to the Research Corpus Master (the RCM is the Cahokia region authority here — see Decisions, the Ch 44/45 WGM scramble) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 45 Central USA].

Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)
Every fight is blended, primary-and-secondary-verb, three-axis, with phase escalation that evolves the moveset (HL_0078), and a reward on win and on death per the T1_Combat failure-states rule [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0078] [SRC: T1_Combat_System_Spec].
BE_0045 "the Site-Feeder, referenced descriptively as 'The Underwater-Panther That Wears the Serpent'" (a negative-consciousness vril accretion that matured over the unstewarded Vacant-Quarter centuries into a mimic wearing the site's most potent sacred shape — a false power made of leftover reverence, feeding on the site rather than anchoring it) · primary PERCEIVE · secondary PURGE · axis 25/45/30 · phases [P1→CH45_B03, P2→CH45_B09] · win {ws.community_state_per_region: +cahokia_horned_serpent_restored — UNMASKING the false face, STRIKING DOWN the counterfeit that wore it, RESTORING the true image's dignity; the horned-serpent Thread-2 modern peak surfaces clean; never the sacred Underwater-Panther itself} · death {graduated persistence, no fail-wall — the strengthened feeder shadows the Ch 59-60 counter-campaign revisit, each attempt reading the mimic's tell one layer clearer} [SRC: T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry @ BE_0045] [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # Ch 45] [POPULATE→BOSS_PERSONAS # Ch 45 Red-Horn-contest fought-strike register]
sub-bosses (each a beat): BE_0045_S1 the Woodhenge Solar-Ghost (PERCEIVE/ATTUNE, Thread-7 archaeoastronomy set-piece — a fed distortion has smeared the solstice/equinox alignment; solving the Wittry-documented solar geometry re-trues it) → CH45_B04 · BE_0045_S2 the Chunkey-Yard Contest (skill-and-lore mini-boss against a residue-echo player in the Grand Plaza, the SECC iconography the read) → CH45_B06 [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # Ch 45]
sub-beat (not a boss row): BE_0045_S3 the Living-Record/Continuity Witness (witness-depth, NOT a person-fight) → CH45_B07 — reading the true stratigraphy the way the 1894 Smithsonian survey established it and hearing the descendant nations' own testimony (the Osage oral tradition, Robert Rankin's Dhegiha linguistics, the tribal preservation officer's voice); each layer of true record read holds the genuine horned-serpent clear and strips the mimic of the borrowed skin it was taken for [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING]
antagonist network node NW_0042 (VRIL_STANDALONE, UNAWARE — no Council operation, no Velheim presence); the boss holds the blended-mode doctrine (three-axis split never 100/0/0, escalation that evolves the moveset, at least two counters per signature — the mimicry cross-checked via Vril Sight OR Ground Sense so no single-tool lock, and the over-purge risk telegraphed a full beat before consequence so the genuine echo is never purged with the mimic) [SRC: T0_Antagonist_Network_Registry @ NW_0042]

Key ally NPCs
Marie Shunkamolah, a Cahokia descendant-nation tribal historic-preservation officer (RR-52-finalized name — an Osage secular family surname [root: dog], screened clear of the Dhegiha Great-Mystery name Wakȟáŋ Tȟáŋka / Wakonda [the prior working name "Wahtiánka" was STRUCK for echoing it], and NOT a portrait of the real Osage THPO whose public work informs the register) — the interpretive authority of the chapter, who defers to the descendant communities' own voice, carries the "the people who built this never went away" line, and reads the true stratigraphy beside the protagonist; engaged witness-depth, never a combat target, never appropriated, and never a settler-scholar decoding the sacred from outside [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0135] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003].
Carried: the healer's child (CHAR_0002), co-witness and journal-keeper; Ana (CHAR_0017), the melee blade against the residue-echoes (never a person) — both inviolate [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0002].

Protected-chapter combat framing (ruling 5)
Ch 45 is a VRIL-standalone protected-site node: no combat against any descendant community or the site's stewards (Cahokia's people did not vanish — the Osage, Quapaw, Caddo, Ho-Chunk, and other nations are their living descendants), and the sacred horned-serpent / Underwater-Panther iconography is engaged at witness-depth as a still-meaningful protected form [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 17.1]. Every fight is directed at the VRIL-standalone parasite, its counterfeit constructs, and the residue-echoes it animates — the four-step environmental care protocol acts on the intruding mimic ONLY, never on the sacred image, and the win is UNMASKING, a fought strike-down of the forgery ALONE once the seeing has stripped its stolen skin, and restoration, never the slaying of a sacred being (the sacred Underwater-Panther / horned-serpent is honored and surfaces clean — only the counterfeit of it is struck) (the villainy belongs to the parasite that corrupts the image, not to the Indigenous belief — the horned serpent is REAL within the game's cosmology per the deities-are-real §17.1 nuance, and its ordered/good aspect is honored) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0004] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0080]. No sacred proper name is placed on the malevolent boss — it is referenced by the descriptive silhouette it counterfeits, framed explicitly as a thing wearing the skin, a false face, a mask; the interpretive authority defers to the descendant communities' own voice (the preservation-officer ally), never to a settler-scholar decoding them from outside; and the living-tradition floor binds — no synthetic voice-clone of a descendant-community figure (HL_0110) and no parodic SFX of the tradition (HL_0111) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0110] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0111].
Anti-fringe / Frame-A flags
The lost-race Moundbuilder myth — at-risk claim: repeating, entertaining, or both-sidesing the "a vanished non-Native race built the mounds" claim in ANY form (Lost Tribes of Israel, Welsh / Prince Madoc, Vikings, Phoenicians, Atlanteans, ancient aliens, a "lost white race"). Canonical framing: Cahokia was built by ancestral Native Americans, full stop; the lost-race myth is a documented racist fabrication (Colavito) whose purpose was to justify dispossession and Removal, and it is never repeated, entertained, or surfaced on any player-facing surface. The affirmative record the game surfaces is the material continuity the 1894 Smithsonian survey established (Native authorship, the unbroken line from mound-fill to living nations); in-world the counterfeit is defeated not by lecturing the myth but by perceiving the true horned-serpent apart from the mimic and restoring the real image, the descendant nations' living continuity leaving the false face nothing to be mistaken for [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING].
The sacred iconography as "proof of a non-Native other" — at-risk claim: treating the horned-serpent / Underwater-Panther as evidence of a mysterious, supernatural, or non-Native "other race." Canonical framing: the false power is a counterfeit that WEARS the sacred skin; the authentic iconography is the real, human, Native cultural inheritance — the correction is explicit, and the Piasa's documented winged-"bird" fabrication (a nineteenth-century white invention Russell admitted making up, over the wingless 1673 Marquette original) is the in-world teaching case of exactly this outsider distortion [SRC: ESOTERIC_GROUNDING] [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].
The genuine scholarly contests — at-risk claim: the game supplying "the answer" to open scholarship. Canonical framing: the population scale (Pauketat's maximalist "Greater Cahokia" 25,000-50,000 versus Milner's minimalist "inflated, not a proto-state"), the collapse cause (flood per Munoz/White versus Caitlin Rankin's no-flood-sediment stratigraphy (2021) versus drought versus deforestation — genuinely unsolved), and the Braden-style/SECC Cahokian-origin question are all preserved as LIVE debate, not resolved [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING].
Noble-savage erasure — at-risk claim: rendering the nations as mystical, tragic, extinct, or spiritually frozen in the past. Canonical framing: these are present-tense sovereign governments who govern, litigate, repatriate under NAGPRA, and buy back their own mounds (Sugarloaf, 2024) — the myth erased their achievement and the noble-savage frame erases their present, and both are the same denial the game refuses to repeat; the counterfeit's whole trick is to be mistaken for what these living nations still keep [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 17.1].
The astronomy — at-risk claim: ley-lines, "ancient advanced technology," numerology, or aliens. Canonical framing: the real archaeoastronomy (Wittry's horizon-calendar, the equinox-over-Monk's-Mound sightline, the latitude-corrected offset post) — the awe comes from what the evidence actually supports [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING].
Three-layer surfacing
L1 self-contained: a discovery-and-protocol adventure — read the Woodhenge, out-perceive the mimic, restore the record and the true image at the greatest city north of Mexico; a complete action-adventure needing no metaphysics [SRC: T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry @ BE_0045].
L2 investigatable: the reading layer — the SECC catalog (Townsend), Wittry's archaeoastronomy, the Pauketat/Milner population debate, the open collapse debate, Cyrus Thomas's 1894 report, Kennedy's Hidden Cities, and the descendant nations' oral tradition, Robert Rankin's Dhegiha linguistics, and the tribal-consultation frameworks — read via the inscription-sight at journal and Grimoire depth [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 45 Central USA].
L3 metaphysical-as-real, never declared: the Mississippian horned serpent is the serpent-thread's pre-Columbian North-American modern peak, REAL in the world through the vril-perception mechanics (the ordered-balance register); the fought Beneath-World purge lands on the COUNTERFEIT of it ONLY, never the sacred being, and the light felt-recurrence — the appetite the forgery wears, a coil met in other scales — is held as protagonist-side perception, NEVER a declared single dragon and never subordinating this distinct living-tradition serpent to one source (the horned-serpent lattice with Ch 43 is a Thread-2 MOTIF echo across cultures, each being its own); the accumulated-vril-residue maturing over the unstewarded Vacant Quarter into a mimic is the substrate operating exactly as the cascade canon says — the FIRST pure VRIL-standalone node, no Velheim hand on the surface, only a place so saturated with focused devotion it grew its own counterfeit god; nothing of the thesis is spoken and there is no Grand-Sage hint (HL_0043). (⌁ BURIED DESIGN-LAYER ONLY, NEVER surfaced and NEVER declared at Ch 45: per the Task #48 seed logged in the Boss structure, the site's curdling was quietly FORCED by the family's occult operator — unattributed and unseen, the hand recognized only retroactively at Ch 63 — but the player-facing L3 here is EXACTLY the no-watcher "grew its own counterfeit god" reading above; the forger attribution is retroactive-only, invisible on every Ch-45 surface, and its whole purpose is the Ch 63 recognition, not this chapter.) [SRC: ESOTERIC_GROUNDING] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043].
Asset anchors
creatures_and_fauna — no permitted fauna-combat spotlight (a discovery/protocol node); the residue-echoes and the counterfeit constructs are constructs and mimicries (never living beings, never a person), and the horned serpent / Underwater Panther is honored sacred iconography, never a combat target; a real SECC object (a Ramey jar, a Braden shell gorget, a repoussé copper falcon plate, a Woodhenge sun-beaker) carries the authentic sacred weight in-scene so the counterfeit has something true to be measured against [SRC: T3_Familiars_Named] [POPULATE→T0_Creature_Roster].
architecture_set_dressing — Monk's Mound and its terraces, the Grand Plaza and chunkey yard, the Woodhenge red-cedar circle, the contracting bastioned palisade, and Sugarloaf Mound in the modern city (referenced with dignity, the mound-fill and archaeoastronomy as documented achievements, never reproduced as spectacle) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 45 Central USA] [POPULATE→T0_Theme_Registry].
material_palette and style_register — a grounded present-day-and-archaeological register for the site (the earthworks, the plaza, the reconstructed posts), with the mythologically-stylized register reserved for the L3 vril-perception of the genuine horned-serpent echo and the counterfeit's hollow tells (the corrupted sun-sign, the hollow beaker-glow, the eyeless copper falcon); the mimic's charge reads faintly OVER-saturated and unstable, an unusually deep Vacant-Quarter over-accretion (a surface-safe flavor — read on-page purely as the site's own over-accreted curdling, the ⌁ buried design-layer knowing it is the family's forcing, never surfaced); protected sacred iconography referenced, not reproduced [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 45 Central USA].
music_mood — a spare, vast register for the mound-and-plaza scale; a documented-percussion and chunkey-crowd texture for the Grand Plaza; the mimic's music a hollow counterfeit of authentic motifs; and for the descendant-nation beats the referenced-not-reproduced discipline on any living-tradition sound; theme_refs the erasure-and-restoration motif, the balance-versus-appetite motif, and the sky-order motif [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 45 Central USA] [POPULATE→T0_Theme_Registry].
voice_and_crowd — the preservation officer's exacting, present-tense register (the community's own voice, the interpretive authority), the counterfeit's hollow mimicry, and the ambient of the plaza and the modern site; per-NPC registers deferred to the Voice registry, with the HL_0110 living-tradition synthetic-voice default binding — no voice-clone of a descendant-community figure [SRC: T1_Build_Pipeline_Contracts # 9.6] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0110] [POPULATE→T0_Voice_Registry].
sfx_substrate — the mound-and-plaza and Woodhenge and river-bottom terrain enum, the vril-perception and four-step-purge environmental ambient, the Trade-9 inscription-sight on the SECC iconography and the record-and-continuity marker, and the equinox-coordinate register; the §17.1 living-tradition discipline binds any descendant-community cue (referenced not reproduced, no parodic SFX per HL_0111) [SRC: T1_Build_Pipeline_Contracts # 9.6] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0111] [POPULATE→T0_SFX_Registry].
fragment carrier and sacred objects — the INSC_77H_CH45_FRAGMENT inscription-spine fragment (the Woodhenge solar-alignment-as-script, the SECC iconographic program, and the record-and-continuity marker, read at high mastery — the L2-becomes-Preparation ammunition of the perception-and-decode fight); sacred_objects_and_props include the recovered documentary record (the true stratigraphy, the descendant testimony) and the SECC objects and the horned-serpent iconography (referenced, honored, never reproduced or appropriated) [SRC: T0_Inscription_Spine @ INSC_77H_CH45_FRAGMENT].

Decisions surfaced
Ch 45 surfaced these decisions; the grounded and creative-within-vision ones are resolved inline with reasoning shown (Josh-override-able at RR-52), and no cardinal un-decidable is left open. This is not a hard-line node, so no Stage-2 canonical-question set is required.
The Great Plains LENGTHEN scope — RESOLVED (Josh-consulted 2026-07-10, the RCM fallback): the RCM ratifies a Great Plains LENGTHEN onto Ch 45 (Lakota/Cheyenne/Blackfoot/Pawnee, the bison-erasure, the Black Hills, Wounded Knee and the Sun Dance at witness-depth, DAPL, wakȟáŋ) but with an explicit "route to the Ch 62 Americas revisit if Ch 45 is judged full" fallback. Ch 45 is judged full and thematically distinct: it is the game's FIRST pure VRIL-standalone node (NW_0042, no Velheim presence), while the Plains bison-erasure is canonically a Velheim EXTRACTIVE/erasure signature — including it here would collapse the VRIL-standalone integrity. The heavy Plains content is therefore routed to Ch 62 (its own Velheim-EXTRACTIVE node with the dedicated care it deserves), and only a LIGHT Skidi-Pawnee sky-astronomy rhyme (which fits the Woodhenge Thread-7 astronomy at witness-depth, the Morning Star ceremony off-stage) is carried at Ch 45 [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 45 Central USA].
The Chapter_Index CH_45 region mis-population — CORRECTED + FLAGGED (living-source): the live Chapter_Index CH_45 region_primary was mis-populated with "Chaco Canyon, Hopi territory, Southwest USA" — that is Ch 46's content (Ch 46 = Southwest / Area 51 per the RCM and BOSS_PERSONAS). The RCM authority is unambiguous that Ch 45 = Cahokia and the Woodhenge; the scatter aligns region_primary to the RCM Cahokia scope (plus the Central-USA Plains-on-route note deferred to Ch 62), and the Ch 45/46 region boundary (Ch 46's own row also under-populated, listing only "Area 51") is flagged for Josh at RR-52. The SAME scramble exists in the geography authority T1_World_Geography_Master v2.3 — it files Cahokia / Monk's Mound / the Woodhenge under its "Ch 44" heading and its "Ch 45" heading under Chaco / Southwest — so this entry cites the RCM (not the WGM) as the Cahokia region authority, and the WGM Ch 44/45 geography scramble is flagged for the same living-source realignment (Cahokia → Ch 45, Chaco/Southwest → Ch 46) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 45 Central USA].
The RCM Ch 45 trade-numbering errors — CORRECTED + FLAGGED (living-source): the RCM L4698 reads "Trade 3 Inscription" and "Trade 7 Astral Projection," both wrong — Inscription is Trade 9 (T1_Trades_Master §3.9, ancient-only at Ch 15 and Ch 29), Trade 7 is Culinary Arts (§3.7, Ch 42 Haiti), and Astral Projection is the Crown-seat Vril ability A_C_001, not a trade. This entry uses the correct forms; the RCM errors (and the same "Trade 7 Astral Projection" error already flagged at Ch 44 in the RCM L4639 and BOSS_PERSONAS) are flagged for a living-source cleanup [SRC: T1_Trades_Master # 3.9].
The descendant-nations and SECC-iconography depiction — RESOLVED (§17.1 witness-depth + the deep-research care findings): the nations are precisely differentiated (Osage strongest but convergent-evidence-not-genealogy; Caddo separate and trade-linked; Ho-Chunk inconclusive; Kickapoo and the naming Illinois clan later arrivals not builders), present-tense sovereign (the Sugarloaf 2024 rematriation, the NAGPRA consultation), never pan-Indian, and the interpretive authority defers to their own voice; the sacred horned-serpent is the protected echo the parasite only apes (no sacred proper name on the boss, framed as a thing wearing the skin), the Piasa winged-"bird" fabrication held to the authorial anti-fringe layer (not a player-facing beat), and the racist Moundbuilder myth held to the authorial anti-fringe layer (Cyrus Thomas 1894 established Native authorship), never repeated and never a player-facing beat [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 17.1].
No cardinal fork is open — the region (Cahokia, per the RCM authority), era, VRIL-standalone operational-type, and thread set are canonical (RCM, BOSS_PERSONAS, T1_Threads_22); the preservation officer is named Marie Shunkamolah, RR-52 Layer-3-finalized per the delegated naming authority [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_45].
The modern-arc re-flesh (Task #48) — DESIGN-LAYER ONLY, a BURIED origin-seed, NOT a surface rewrite (per docs/proposals/modern_arc_staging/modern_scope_39_45.md, which classes Ch 45 "MEDIUM (design-layer only)"): the four AAA moves do NOT apply as surface content here because Ch 45 is the FIRST pure VRIL-standalone / no-watcher relief beat and that identity is PRESERVED BY MANDATE. NO Velheim/corporate target, NO champion face, NO fielded construct on-page, NO materialized-argument; the family is ABSENT on the surface and NW_0042 stays VRIL_STANDALONE/UNAWARE. The ONLY re-flesh is a buried DESIGN-LAYER re-framing of the Site-Feeder's ORIGIN (logged in the Boss structure + the Three-layer L3 + here): the site did not curdle purely by itself — the family's one demonstrated occult operator (unattributed and unseen here, her hand recognized only retroactively at Ch 63) had quietly been forcing the accreted Vacant-Quarter vril, which is why the mimic has teeth (the modern arc's first faint family-magic trace). This is the SHARPEST REVEAL RISK IN THE RANGE — attributing the Site-Feeder's teeth to Velheim on-page would break the canonical no-watcher/VRIL-standalone identity AND surface the family's substrate-fielding two chapters into the arc. Held FULLY UNATTRIBUTED at Ch 45 (no watcher, no Velheim/family presence, no forcing-mark on any surface, the body prose UNCHANGED, the relief pacing and descendant-community witness framing UNTOUCHED); the seed pays off only at Ch 63. Dominant mode KEPT environmental/STANDARD, pressure LOW (relief-from-the-hunt preserved). Care UNTOUCHED: sacred-never-corrupted (horned-serpent/Underwater-Panther/Piasa never fought, only the mimic), cryptid-authenticity (living tradition, witness-depth, not cryptozoology), descendant-nations witness-depth (Osage/Quapaw/Caddo differentiated). REVEAL-FLAG: the mandatory reveal-discipline re-verify is run on this node precisely because a design-layer seed on a no-watcher chapter is the sharpest place a leak could break canon; per the v3 conversion runbook's unattributed-before-Ch-63 discipline, the v3 typed sections (beat objectives, thin-index, fork, scenes, seams) name no operator at all — the buried seed survives verbatim in this entry and in Three-layer surfacing only, both KEPT unchanged from v2.5 [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # THE PUPPETEER] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043].
The v3 typing of the boss thin-index and fork — RESOLVED (v3 conversion, 2026-07-15; Josh-override-able at any RR): the v2.5 "Boss structure" bullets (Site-Feeder + 3 sub-encounters) type cleanly to BE_0045 (phases P1→CH45_B03, P2→CH45_B09) plus sub-bosses BE_0045_S1/BE_0045_S2 (both attested in the T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry BE_0045 "sources" field) and sub-beat BE_0045_S3 (witness-depth, not a boss row, mirroring the CH_02 Ebu-Gogo "ambient sub-threat" precedent). The v2.5 "integrity_divergence {good, neutral, bad}" path-state labels are retired per schema §1 — FORK_CH45_A keys the same Substantial-class restoration-method choice by ACTION with a direction, care_band set to protected-elevated (not plain elevated) per gotcha 16, because the fork's own axis is literally the standing with a protected descendant-community, matching this chapter's own "Protected-chapter combat framing" block [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 5.1] [SRC: T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry @ BE_0045].
The fork mark's forward_track — RESOLVED-APPLIED as forward_track [CH_62 CH_65], superseding the prior flag with its evidence and provenance kept whole. The prior resolution read: "FLAGGED (not invented): FORK_CH45_A's mark_write (the standing with the Cahokia descendant nations) has no confirmed forward-reading chapter in current canon — a grep -n "CH_45\|Ch 45\|Ch-45" docs/proposals/WHOLE_ARC_CONNECTIVE_WEB_INVENTORY.md returns zero hits (checked at the v3 conversion), and neither the Ch 62 Americas-revisit routing (which carries the separate Great-Plains LENGTHEN content, a different community set) nor any other chapter's Continuity-anchor block claims this mark. forward_track is left empty per gotcha 1 (list ONLY chapters that actually read the mark) rather than guessed; a future connective-web pass may find or author a Ch 62/63 consumer beat." That flag was correctly cautious and its restraint was right, but both of its searches ran against the wrong surface. The grep interrogated a PROPOSAL doc rather than the built spine nodes, so it could not have surfaced a spine consumer whatever the truth was; and the Ch-62 check was made against Ch 62's Great-Plains LENGTHEN content alone, which is indeed a different community set. Reading Ch 62's own text settles it. Ch 62's region_chapter_set names this ground directly — "the world-state reflection on the whole Americas journey (Haiti, the Gullah and Appalachian south, the Haudenosaunee northeast, Cahokia, the Southwest, Mesoamerica, the Maya, the Amazon, the Andes)" — and CH62_B04 dissolves each debt-wraith cordon-node "by the exact Ch 39-50 win it maps to," where "the case's own prior communities answer as they were left," the three communities it names being exemplars ("among them") rather than a closed set. Ch 65 supplies the second reader: "the recombination-exam reads the accumulated record — the Ch-48 route via convergence_node_state and the Ch 39-65 community marks via community_state_per_region, read here or carried to the Ch-75 coalition muster, non-gating." Ch 45 sits inside both declared ranges. The two targets follow the CH_48 precedent, and gotcha 1 is satisfied by a read that actually exists at each end rather than by a guess; both reads are non-gating, so nothing about Ch 45's own resolution or progression changes [SRC: CH_62 # CH62_B04] [SRC: CH_65 # CH65_B03] [SRC: WHOLE_ARC_CONNECTIVE_WEB_INVENTORY].
Thread-Grid drift surfaced at the v3 join (gotcha 14) — QUEUED for the orchestrator's serialized landing, not applied here: (1) T0_Thread_Grid THREAD_03/CH_45 reads progression_stage ESCALATION with content_summary "Ch 45 VRIL standalone — first VRIL-type encounter in arc" — this directly contradicts the chapter's own Threads-advancing block, which explicitly and repeatedly states "Thread 3 (Antagonist Family) NOT PRESENT... the antagonist-family thread goes dark for the chapter," and it mirrors the operational-type tag (VRIL_STANDALONE), not genuine Thread-3 narrative progression; T1_Threads_22_Master_References itself uses an identical "no-operational-presence" / "ABSENT-by-design" formula for the structurally analogous Ch 52 and Ch 57 VRIL-standalone-adjacent no-watcher chapters. Recommended correction: progression_stage → NOT_PRESENT, content_summary → a chapter-ambient no-watcher note mirroring the Ch 52/57 rows. (2) T0_Thread_Grid THREAD_13/CH_45 reads progression_stage ANCHOR with content_summary "Ch 45 Chaco alignment" — Thread 13 (Sacred Geometry) appears nowhere in Ch 45's own Threads-advancing block, and "Chaco alignment" (Fajada Butte) is Ch 46 content per this entry's own already-flagged Ch 44/45/46 region-scramble (see the Chapter_Index/WGM correction above) and per BOSS_PERSONAS Ch 46's Fajada Butte Sun-Dagger Guardian; the identical "Ch 45 Chaco Canyon alignment" fragment also appears at T1_Threads_22_Master_References [ACTIVE v2.2].md line 412 (a Thread-7-list bullet, not Thread 13), a second living-source instance of the same scramble. Recommended correction: drop or reassign both instances to Ch 46, mirroring the THREAD_11/CH_45 "blank this cell or drop the row" precedent already ruled at batch-1 #10. Neither THREAD_03 nor THREAD_13 is joined to any CH_45 beat in this v3 typing; THREAD_01 and THREAD_04's CH_45 rows are lower-confidence mismatches (their content doesn't cleanly match either thread's canonical identity or this chapter's own Threads block) and are likewise left unjoined without a firm correction claim, reported as a note only [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_03] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_13] [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 3].
SQ-slug assignment for the Side-questlines — RESOLVED (v3 conversion, placement judgment, not new canon): the v2.5 "Side-questlines" bullets (Chunkey-Yard Contest, Woodhenge re-truing, Sugarloaf rematriation) carried no SQn tag. Assigned SQ11 lost_civilizations to the Chunkey/record-marker/Sugarloaf throughline (the chapter's own anti-fringe frame is explicitly the "was this civilization lost" question, answered no) and SQ3 archaeology_inscription_occult to the Woodhenge re-truing (explicitly Trade-9-inscription-sight-read alignment-as-script); both staged ADVANCE rather than SEED, since both slugs canonically open long before Ch 45 [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0032].
