Chapter 41 — South Africa Modern: The Last Practitioner
Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (authored fresh to docs/proposals/CHAPTER_BUILD_TARGET.md and the v2.5 twenty-block anchor-hub schema, grounded on the enrich.py pack), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the enrich.py pack and BOSS_PERSONAS BE_0041. The CLIMAX of the Africa Modern triad (Ch 39-41) and the personal-scale peak of it (Ch 39 institutional → Ch 40 systemic → Ch 41 personal — a ≠Khomani community and one of its elders); the second of the sanctioned Ch 40-41 moral-choice double; the chapter where the numbered six-coordinate Vimana hunt BEGINS (Drakensberg rock-art = Coordinate 1 of 6) and where Ana rejoins. ELEVATED CARE in practice despite the registry's standard tier: the San are a protected people and the Last Practitioner is a sacred, inviolate NPC (never a target). The reveal is LIFTED (the House of Velheim may be named player-facing); HELD still: the patriarch Cassius (the advocate does not know him — the chain up runs into the nameless Velheim ledger, Ch 76) and the full thesis (the Ch 77 Grand Sage, §17.9 guard). Drafted is not canonical.

reveal_state LIFTED — the House of Velheim may be named player-facing and the modern hunt is two-directional. HELD still: the patriarch Cassius (the advocate knows the family's operation but not the head; the chain up runs into the nameless Velheim ledger — Cassius surfaces at Ch 76) and the full thesis (the Ch 77 Grand Sage, §17.9 / HL_0043) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043] [SRC: T4_House_of_Velheim_Canonical # 9.1].
Continuity anchor (SSBL §9.3 — Ch 41 start state = Ch 40 end state)
Ch 41 opens from Ch 40's committed end state [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_40]: the protagonist a young adult (internal age plateaued at 18, age_stage Adulthood), carrying from the moral-choice chapter the House of Velheim's FINANCIAL modern form mapped, the choice she made and carries, and the journal now an evidentiary record in her own hand; the healer's child (CHAR_0002) traveling as the primary companion and co-witness (and here writing the modern arc's first explicit personal-philosophical journal entry); the familiars carried unchanged (Shell W1, the Nile Crocodile W2, the Simurgh F4, the Koi W3, Taki G4, Berkut F5, the Raven F6, the Reindeer G6, Paravani F2 ranging, the Sanur Octopus W4 deferred and gated, the Child Familiar still lost); the freed fixer Tunde and the Mbuti guide-elder carried lightly as modern contacts; all trade home bases and the SCH_001 through SCH_008 schools carried; the Crown and Third-Eye devices bound; concealment at CONCEALMENT_WITH_HOSTILE_RECOGNITION; the House of Velheim named and hunted two-directionally, the Sealed Letter readable but its deepest last third still sealed toward its Ch 66 close [SRC: T3_Core_Characters # The Healer's Child] [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0002]. What changes here is that Ana (CHAR_0017) rejoins — the Manggarai Caci fighter who parted after Rome, back at the protagonist's side for the triad's climax — and that the hunt acquires, for the first time, a numbered direction: a coordinate read (with an elder's consent, on his terms) off a rock wall the San painted, and the personal weight of a ≠Khomani community's land-fight that is theirs to wage and hers to help.
Body prose
South Africa is where the modern arc's two halves come together, and where the enemy's method gets smaller and worse. In Nigeria it was a corporation; in the Congo a supply chain; here it is one advocate in a good suit, one prospecting concession, and a stretch of the southern Kalahari that a San community spent a lifetime getting back. The advocate is Barend Grondwet-Steyn, a Johannesburg mining-law specialist, and he is the most dangerous of the three because he does not think he is doing anything wrong — he has the law, and he is not entirely without a case. He will tell her, reasonably, that the country needs the minerals and the work; that the concession would bring roads and a clinic and wages to one of the poorest districts in the republic; that the community's title is not being taken but weighed against the national interest by the same constitution — grondwet, ground-law — that granted it. She has heard versions of that argument from every extraction she has walked through, and the hardest thing about it is how much of it is true. And it ends, the way they all end, with someone else's ground in his client's hands and the people who live on it told it was for their own good.
But this community is not waiting to be saved, and that is the first thing she understands that Grondwet-Steyn never will. These are ≠Khomani San, of the southern Kalahari in the Northern Cape, and they have fought a South African government for this land before and won — in 1999, on a restitution claim they built and argued themselves, the new democracy gave them back a part of the ground the old one had driven them off, the farms and reserve their grandparents were cleared from across the middle of the last century, when San families were pushed off ancestral land; and across those same decades other San — the !Xun and Khwe, later resettled into the Northern Cape — were pressed into the apartheid army as trackers for a border war that wanted their skill and not their freedom. They know precisely what a state's pen can do to a people, because a state has done a version of all of it to San like them. So when the concession is filed it is the community's own Communal Property Association that moves first — their land committee, their attorneys, their young people raised on the restitution their elders won — and the protagonist's work, when she reaches them, is not to rescue anyone. It is to help them win a fight they are already waging: to add what she can read to what their lawyers already know, and to stand where they ask her to stand and nowhere else.
The elder who decides to trust her is a man the community calls Oupa Gert — grandfather Gert — one of the last handful of people alive who still speak N|uu, the desert's own language, and one of the few who still carry the living San cosmology whole: the eland and the rain-animal, the healer's seeing, the knowing the old painters drew on. He does not claim to hold the reading of any particular painted wall — that meaning went into the ground with the people who made it, and survives now only as an outsider's reconstruction — but the cosmology behind it is still alive in him, and that is a different and harder thing to kill. He is not a wise man dying with a secret; he is a working elder in the middle of his own fight, teaching N|uu to his grandchildren three afternoons a week in a school with no money, sitting on the land committee, and thoroughly tired of outsiders who record him and disappear. He tells her, the first day, that he has met her sort before — people who wanted his knowledge more than they wanted him — and that he will show her what he chooses to show her because the land is in danger and she can be useful, not because a stranger is owed the whole of a life's learning. Everything he gives, he gives on those terms; she keeps them exactly; and that keeping is the entire distance between her and the man with the filings.
He takes her east, up onto the Drakensberg escarpment, to the painted shelters — and this is not his own desert but the country of a different San people, the ones who painted these walls, kin to his own and gone now; he goes as a San elder reconnecting to a sister tradition, not as the native keeper of a wall his grandfathers made. The paintings themselves the world learned to read only imperfectly, through a /Xam record two colonial scholars set down in the 1870s from Karoo prisoners whose own people did not survive, an outsider's reconstruction of a meaning the painters never wrote. But the eland the painters loved and the eland his own cosmology holds most sacred are the same eland, and it is that shared knowing he brings up the mountain with him. And he shows her the eland. Not as a picture: in the seeing the first people of this land carried, the eland is the most charged being there is — the rain-animal, the fat and water and potency of the world, the shape a healer takes in the deepest trance. That is what the panel is, and that is what it stays. She does not reduce it to anything, and she is careful, standing there, to want nothing from it. But she carries a sight no painter and no scholar ever had, and with it, before an image that is wholly and only sacred, she feels the substrate under the stone answer — a bearing, the first of six, humming in the rock beneath a meaning that stays the eland's and the people's and never becomes hers. The painting is not a map. The world underneath it holds a direction, and the two are not the same thing, and she keeps them separate for the rest of her life.
She is not alone for it. Ana comes back to her here — the Caci fighter who guarded her through Rome and then turned away when the road bent toward the sea, because there were roads Ana would not walk — and the return is not a warm inevitability. Ana has tracked her across two continents to say, awkwardly and at cost, that she was wrong to go, or right to go and wrong to stay away, she is honestly not sure which, only that she is here now and means to stay; and the protagonist does not make it cheap for her, and that is why it lands. What Ana says out loud, once the hard thing is said, is that the company has not improved and the cooking has got worse — and then she picks up a blade and falls in at the protagonist's left as if she had never been gone, which is the most Ana will ever say about any of it, and both of them know it. And that night the healer's child writes in the journal the first page that is not a record of what happened but a worry about what it was worth — turning over whether one old man's language is a smaller thing than a whole supply chain, or a larger one — and does not answer it, leaves the question open on the paper; and the protagonist, reading over the child's shoulder, lets it stand unanswered.
The family fights this chapter almost entirely with paper — the advocate is nearly the whole of its visible weight — but paper is not the only thing that moves in it. On the mining town's edge, where the belief is not San at all but the Xhosa and Zulu and mineworker world layered over old ground, people speak of the tokoloshe, the low malevolent water-sprite you raise your bed on bricks to keep from at night, and of the impundulu, the lightning-bird a witch keeps and sends; living belief, not the San's and not the enemy's, and she moves through it the way she moves through any people's night-things — carefully, and never using them. And the disturbed ground under the Witwatersrand, torn by a century of gold and now by the new survey, holds a thing the concession's security has learned to loose along the survey line: a drill-wraith, a forced echo wrenched out of the wounded mine-earth and set to frighten the community's people off the site — never a San being and never the town's honest tokoloshe, a stolen thing wearing the mine's own violence, held on the same forcing-mark she has read twice already this arc. She breaks it the way she is learning to break all of them, by finding the leash and cutting it; it is the family's one occult move in a chapter it mostly litigates.
And once, on the escarpment road at dusk, the hunter finds her. Not the advocate — the other one, the patient one, the House's own pursuer who was a nameless dread at her back through all the ancient chapters and now, in the modern world, has a face and a name she learned at the midpoint. He is close this time, closer than he has ever been; he has tracked her to the Drakensberg and he means to take her, and she gets away only by wit and by cost, leaving something behind to do it, and understanding for the first time as a plain fact and not a fear that she is catchable — that the hunt runs both ways and the other direction has teeth. He does not take her here. He will be closer the next time. That is the whole of the beat: not a fight she wins but a fact she absorbs.
The choice the chapter forces is real, and it belongs to the community as much as to her. They can win it in the hearing — the Association's case, built on their own 1999 precedent and their own title, with what she can read folded in — and beat the ground-law man on the ground-law's own ground; that is the road the community's leaders want, because a paper win holds and does not get their young men shot. Or, if the concession's hired security forces the matter at the site, there is the road the elders fear because they have buried people along it before, and if it comes to that she can put herself between the community and the machines and break the drills and the rigs with her own hands, the apparatus and never a person, the San never once in the fight. She does not choose the road for them. She offers what she is, and abides by what they decide, and holds the line they draw. When it ends the land is still theirs, the concession stalled or withdrawn, Oupa Gert's knowing written down the way he wanted it written and left with his grandchildren and not carried off in her book — and, under all of it, one bearing out of six, hers to follow, humming in a direction she still cannot name. The eland stays on the wall, where it has always been, and where it belongs.
Threads advancing
Mirrored to the canonical Thread grid (the per-thread rows below, keyed THREAD_NN) and the per-chapter blocks of T1_Threads_22 (canonical-22 names, verified against the grid, never inferred) [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_41].
Thread 1 Vril Parallels — ANCHOR: the San rock-art/oral tradition made mortal and specific — a ≠Khomani San elder (an N|uu speaker) as a living holder actively passing the knowledge on, the /Xam Bleek-Lloyd 1870s Collection as the documented INTERPRETIVE archive (by analogy — the /Xam were the extinct Karoo informants, not the Drakensberg painters), and the South African San Institute as the institutional support; the vril-substrate continuity carried not as an abstraction but as one elder's knowing, held and taught, not a claim of unbroken lineage [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 1] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_01].
Thread 2 Serpent — ANCHOR (the six-coordinate hunt opens): the Drakensberg San rock-art serpentine forms now fully read by adult inscription mastery — Vimana Coordinate 1 of 6 unlocked, resolving the earlier unnumbered Ch 10 partial-read and Ch 13 companion-decode clues into the numbered six-coordinate hunt that begins here (running to the Vimana at Ch 55) [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 2] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_02].
Thread 3 Antagonist Family — ESCALATION (reveal LIFTED): the EXTRACTIVE / Sector-2 paper-legal variant — the third modern-era House-of-Velheim operation (a mining company's legal-filing pressure on San land rights via a prospecting-rights concession, the community's 1999 ≠Khomani restitution as the SA context (the 2006 Sesana ruling is Botswana's, a non-binding regional reference)), the family's extraction-sector modern form mapped; plus the House's own recurring hunter's FIRST felt modern re-emergence (the enforcement champion named at Ch 38 — a hunt-as-prey near-miss establishing the protagonist is catchable, the hunt two-directional), and the family's one occult move here (a drill-wraith from the wounded mine-ground, deployed UNATTRIBUTED — an organized hand wielding a forced thing, its forger unnamed, never a San being); the trail up into the nameless ledger (Cassius held for Ch 76) [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 3] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_03] [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # THE VERDERER].
Thread 22 Sacred Stones — ANCHOR: the Sacred-Pigment deep-time ochre/pigment record (the Blombos ~100,000-year material record, Ch 10-13) carried into the modern context — the eland-panel's ochre and pigment as one of the deepest MATERIAL threads on Earth (a deep-time material-and-cultural thread, not a claim of unbroken institutional identity), with Weaving 13 (entoptic-pattern geometric architecture) active [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 22] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_22].
Civilizational marks (the builders-of-knowledge layer, §9.5 mandatory)
Each mark clears a group-A significance lens and anchors to the RCM verified-canon paragraph or a named primary source; Ch 41 is authored around the San achievement — the rock-art and cosmology (documented interpretively through the extinct-Karoo /Xam Bleek-Lloyd record, by analogy), the deep-time pigment tradition, and the ≠Khomani community's own 1999 restitution victory — credited to the San's own agency: the living ≠Khomani community honored as living, the /Xam honored as the extinct people whose 1870s archive preserves the cosmology [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The San rock-art and cosmology — the documented Maloti-Drakensberg San rock-art tradition and its meaning (Vinnicombe's People of the Eland; Lewis-Williams and Pearce's San Spirituality, which reads the art INTERPRETIVELY through the /Xam record, by analogy, not as the painters' own identity), and the 1870s Bleek-Lloyd ethnographic record (Specimens of Bushman Folklore, from the now-extinct Karoo /Xam) — a real and sophisticated body of art, cosmology, and knowledge credited to the San who made it, the game surfacing its documented depth precisely to correct the "Bushman"-as-primitive slur [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The deep-time pigment record — the documented Blombos ochre-and-pigment record (~100,000 years, among the earliest known symbolic and pigment use), one of the deepest MATERIAL threads on Earth (a deep-time material-and-cultural thread, NOT a claim of unbroken institutional identity), credited to the ancestral San and southern-African peoples (Thread 22, continuity from Ch 10-13) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The ≠Khomani land-rights victory — the documented 1999 South African restitution settlement in which the ≠Khomani San won back ancestral land in the southern Kalahari (Northern Cape / Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park), a claim the community built and argued themselves, plus the SASI and ≠Khomani Communal Property Association institutional infrastructure — a real modern achievement of San legal agency and self-organization, credited to the San who won it (the community shown winning, not only suffering); the 2006 Botswana Sesana ruling (a sister San people's Central-Kalahari victory) referenced only as a labeled non-binding regional precedent, NOT as South African law [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The Truth and Reconciliation record — the documented TRC (1996-1998) and its testimony (Krog's Country of My Skull, the TRC Final Report, Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom), a real achievement of transitional justice and public witness credited to South Africa's own reckoning — the recent historical ground the chapter stands on [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
Component-11 status — none at Ch 41: the Drakensberg rock-art is a documented painted-shelter tradition (and, in-world, Vimana Coordinate 1), not a megalith or archaeoastronomy site of the CVD's Component-11 catalog [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
Everything-woven (the twelve facets, each a real presence, none name-checked)
Ch 41 is authored as the personal-scale climax of the Africa Modern triad and the opening of the six-coordinate hunt — the ancient Ch 13 Drakensberg node behind it (the same rock-art, now read to a coordinate), the Ch 10 deep-time partial-read completed, the Ch 39 institutional and Ch 40 systemic nodes it caps at personal scale, the Ch 42 Haiti diaspora peak next, and the Ch 55 Vimana the six coordinates run toward — the modern web narrowing to one man and one wall; the relational edges controlled for relevance at the significance-lens pass [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].
Combat routes through the puzzle-and-legal fork (the concession hearing, the community's 1999-restitution case), the two secondary occult/enforcement beats — the House's own hunter's felt near-miss (a Hunter Trigger she evades by wit and cost) and a single forced drill-wraith from the wounded mine-ground — and, on the armed branch only, the survey enforcers and the part-break of mining machinery (never a person, never the San); the San and the Last Practitioner are protected and never a target — every fought thing is apparatus, enforcer, or forced construct.
Exploration crosses the Drakensberg escarpment and its rock-art shelters, the Kalahari communal land, the mining country and its town-edge (the non-San mining-town belief), and the courtroom.
Discovery is the rock-art read to Vimana Coordinate 1 (completing the Ch 10/13 chain), the numbered hunt beginning, and the plain new fact that the hunt runs both ways (the House's hunter close enough to make her catchable).
Puzzles are the eland-panel as an inscription surface (the coordinate read from the rock BENEATH, never the sacred painting), the community's 1999-restitution legal puzzle, the Precedent-Erasure filing's forensic refutation (net-reduced), and the forcing-mark read on the drill-wraith.
Mystery is what the rock-art coordinate points to (the six-coordinate hunt's opening question), the chain above the advocate that runs nameless into the Velheim ledger, and what forged the drill-wraith (an unattributed forced asset, its hand unrecognized until Ch 63).
Lore is the San eland/rain-animal cosmology (documented via the extinct-Karoo /Xam Bleek-Lloyd record, never reproduced beyond it), the rock-art tradition, the pigment tradition, the non-San mining-town supernatural (the Xhosa/Zulu tokoloshe and impundulu), and the apartheid/TRC context.
Trades hold their home bases and schools; Trade 9 Inscription reads the Vimana-Coordinate rock-art (the craft's deepest read yet), and the Thread-22 ochre/pigment craft is honored.
Gathering is the ochre and pigment substrate (honored as sacred material, referenced not extracted), and the case record (the 1999 ≠Khomani restitution, SASI; the 2006 Botswana Sesana ruling only a non-binding regional reference).
Side quests run the archaeology-inscription-occult (the rock-art coordinate), the mystery-detective (the land-rights case), the secret-society (the House of Velheim's extractive operation and the recurring hunter's near-miss, named), the lost-civilizations (the six-coordinate hunt's target), the fairy-tale/folklore (the non-San mining-town tokoloshe and impundulu, and the drill-wraith clearly-not-their-tradition), and the Last-Practitioner apprenticeship (recording his knowledge before it is lost, with his blessing) lines (block 11).
Engineering is the mining apparatus (the survey rigs, the concession works) read as a system, and the legal machinery.
Folklore is the San eland and rain-animal tradition (documented via the extinct-Karoo /Xam Bleek-Lloyd/Lewis-Williams record), referenced strictly per that record and never reproduced or invented, kept PRISTINE and never instrumentalized; and, distinct from it, the living non-San mining-town supernatural (the Xhosa/Zulu tokoloshe and impundulu) engaged as Frame-A living belief — the playable supernatural routed OFF the San sacred and onto this town-edge tradition, which the family's forced drill-wraith is clearly NOT.
Superstition is corrected, not indulged — the game surfaces the documented depth and coherence of /Xam spirituality (Lewis-Williams) precisely to answer the "Bushman"-as-primitive slur.
Key sites and spatial layout
Story-load-bearing sites, each having cleared a significance lens and the §4 relevance filter; geography anchors to the World Geography Master, never the RCM [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 41] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
Typed v3.1 site rows (§3b) — beats reference these by site_id; the environmental detail rides each row as env texture.
env: the painted escarpment shelter, the eland-panel kept wholly and only sacred (the coordinate reads from the rock beneath, never the painting); the shelter interior stays threat-free, the approach road at dusk carrying the House hunter's near-miss instead; discovery, learning, and transformation ride this site as texture (the /Xam Bleek-Lloyd background, the Vimana Coordinate 1 unlock, the six-coordinate hunt's opening); hosts CH41_B05/CH41_B06/CH41_B07/CH41_B08/CH41_B09; L2/L3.
env: the ≠Khomani San communal-property land of the southern Kalahari (Northern Cape, by the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park) and the prospecting concession overlapping it; ambient_threat rises toward high on the armed branch (the private security) and stays low elsewhere, the San never in the fight on any branch; hosts CH41_B01/CH41_B02/CH41_B04/CH41_B11/CH41_B12/CH41_B13; L1/L2.
env: the South-African courtroom where the concession hearing runs, the community's own 1999-restitution precedent and the SASI record the evidence, the Sesana ruling only a labeled non-binding reference; no combat; hosts CH41_B10; L1/L2.
env: the historical-into-modern mining continuity behind the concession (a century of gold at Witwatersrand and Kimberley, the same region's mine-labor record read again here), and the mining-town's edge where the belief is Xhosa and Zulu and mineworker, not San (the tokoloshe and impundulu, living Frame-A tradition, moved through and never used); hosts CH41_B03; L2.
Inter-chapter travel — arrival into South Africa (the triad's close), departure toward the Caribbean (Ch 42, the Haiti diaspora peak); travel ground-and-water/modern-conveyance still, but the six-coordinate hunt now has its first bearing (the Vimana at Ch 55) [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)
The main boss is the WS4 villain-type INVERSION — the Honest Non-Villain: Advocate Barend Grondwet-Steyn, steelmanned to the point that beating him is not really the chapter's engine; the true challenge is ASSIMILATION-INTEGRITY, becoming worthy of the record Oupa Gert guards, the real danger her own extraction. Key ally NPCs
The elder (Oupa Gert) — a ≠Khomani San elder, one of the last fluent speakers of N|uu and a holder of the rock-art/oral knowledge, and a WORKING elder with his own agency and fight: he teaches N|uu to his grandchildren, sits on the land committee, and is wary of outsiders who record him and vanish. He decides, warily, to trust the protagonist because the land is in danger and she can be useful — on HIS terms, showing what he chooses; the knowledge-recording is his and his community's own (language-revitalization), left with his grandchildren, not extracted. A sacred, honored, never-a-target NPC (per §17.1's inviolate-shaman line) authored as a full person, not a prop. NAMING: SET at the RR-42 Layer-3 naming pass to Gert (address "Oupa Gert") — an Afrikaans given name in the documented ≠Khomani/N|uu-speaker naming register (Katrina Esau, Dawid Kruiper, Griet Seekoei), the least-appropriative respectful choice per the Mama Klara / Mambo precedent (it fabricates no near-extinct-language vocabulary and claims no sacred meaning), screened clear of every real ≠Khomani/San figure (Kruiper, Esau, //Kabbo, Isak Kruiper, Willie Eyman); Character_Index row added [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41] [SRC: NAMING_METHOD].
Ana (CHAR_0017) — the Manggarai Caci fighter who guarded the protagonist through Rome and parted after; here she REJOINS for the triad's climax, the found-family closing a gap it has carried open; an honored companion, never a target [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0017].
The healer's child (CHAR_0002) — the co-witness, who here writes the modern arc's first explicit personal-philosophical journal entry (whether saving one tradition is smaller or larger than stopping a system); inviolate, never a target [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0002].
No community NPCs at risk — the San are protected and combat-against-no-one; the Last Practitioner is sacred and inviolate; the South African and San peoples are honored, shown with agency (the community's own 1999 ≠Khomani restitution victory), never a single story of suffering (CVD §17.1) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41].

Elevated-care and protected-chapter framing
Ch 41 is authored as ELEVATED CARE despite the registry's standard tier: the San are a protected people (no community combat) and the Last Practitioner is a SACRED, INVIOLATE NPC — never a combat target, the chapter's emotional core, honored per §17.1's inviolate-shaman line [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0051]. The /Xam sacred content (the eland/rain-animal cosmology, the shamanic seeing) is referenced strictly per the documented Bleek-Lloyd and Lewis-Williams record and NEVER reproduced or invented beyond it (CVD §17.7 — no /Xam appropriation; the eland-panel is read as a coordinate FROM THE ROCK BENEATH, its documented sacred meaning kept PRIMARY, never reproduced as sacred art); the game surfaces the documented depth of /Xam spirituality to correct the "Bushman"-as-primitive slur; the San are shown with agency (the 1999 ≠Khomani restitution they won), not only as victims; and the apartheid/TRC context is honest. SACRED-NEVER-CORRUPTED, load-bearing here: the family's occult move is routed entirely OFF the San sacred — the playable town-edge supernatural is the NON-San Xhosa/Zulu tokoloshe and impundulu (living Frame-A belief, moved through and never used), and the single forced construct (a drill-wraith, deployed unattributed) is wrenched from the WOUNDED MINE-GROUND, explicitly never a San being and never the town's honest tokoloshe. Combat routes only against the survey enforcers (armed branch, machinery part-broken never people), the forced drill-wraith, and the House's own hunter's near-miss (a Hunter Trigger she evades — no San anywhere near it); the reveal-lifted House of Velheim and its recurring hunter are named while the forging hand stays unnamed (unattributed → Ch 63), Cassius held (Ch 76), and the thesis held (§17.9 / HL_0043). NO wronged-dead beat here — the San removals and the 31-Battalion tracker-conscription history are kept in the honest-record register, never a summonable one [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0046].
Anti-fringe / Frame-A flags
The San and the "Bushman" slur — at-risk claim: the San as primitive/"Bushmen," or (the inverse) as timeless noble-savage mystics. Canonical framing: the San rock-art and cosmology (documented via the /Xam Bleek-Lloyd record) are surfaced as a documented, sophisticated body of art, knowledge, and spirituality (Vinnicombe, Lewis-Williams, Bleek-Lloyd), credited to the San's own agency (CVD §19 Frame-A), and the San are shown as modern legal agents (the community's own 1999 ≠Khomani restitution) — never primitive, never a romanticized timeless people, and the "Bushman" term appears only where it is a documented historical title (the Bleek-Lloyd and Vinnicombe works), not as description [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING] [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41].
The non-San mining-town supernatural (tokoloshe / impundulu) — at-risk claim: caricaturing the tokoloshe/impundulu as "witchcraft" superstition, conflating them with the San, or blurring them with the family's forced drill-wraith. Canonical framing: the tokoloshe (the malevolent water-sprite, the documented raised-bed apotropaic custom) and the impundulu (the Xhosa/Zulu lightning-bird witch-familiar) are engaged as living Frame-A Xhosa/Zulu/mining-town belief on their own terms — distinct from the San (this is the town-edge, not the San community), moved through and never used or reproduced by the game; and the drill-wraith is explicitly a STOLEN mine-ground construct, deployed unattributed, NEVER the town's honest tokoloshe and NEVER a San being (the routing keeps the family's magic entirely off both the San sacred and the town's living tradition) [SRC: ESOTERIC_GROUNDING] [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41].
The rock-art as "ancient astronaut" map — at-risk claim: the rock-art as literal alien/ancient-astronaut cartography. Canonical framing: the rock-art is documented San sacred art with documented shamanic meaning (Lewis-Williams's neuropsychological/entoptic model); the in-world Vimana Coordinate is the game's L3 substrate surfaced through the inscription mechanic, grounded on the real art and credited to the San who painted it (the Maloti-Drakensberg painters, kin to but not the extinct-Karoo /Xam), NEVER an ancient-aliens claim and never declared [SRC: ESOTERIC_GROUNDING] [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41].
The 100,000-year pigment tradition — at-risk claim: over-claiming a literal unbroken institutional continuity. Canonical framing: the Blombos ochre record is documented as the earliest known symbolic/pigment use, and the continuity is a real material-and-cultural thread (Thread 22, Ch 10-13), credited to the ancestral San and southern-African peoples — a deep-time material tradition, not a claim of unbroken institutional identity [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING] [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41].
The land-rights and apartheid record — at-risk claim: flattening the San into victimhood or eliding the San-specific apartheid history. Canonical framing: the 1999 ≠Khomani restitution (the community's own SA victory) and SASI are documented San legal agency and self-organization (the community winning), and the SAN-SPECIFIC apartheid history is surfaced, not gestured at — the forced removals of the southern-Kalahari San across the mid-20th century that grounded the 1999 claim, and the conscription of San men as trackers in the apartheid army's border war (the notorious 31 Battalion, whose San soldiers were principally !Xun and Khwe of Angola and Namibia) — documented recent history (Krog, Mandela, TRC Final Report) represented with honesty and weight, never elided or reduced to a single story [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41].
Three-layer surfacing
L1 self-contained: a land-rights legal-and-standoff climax with a real two-fork win AND real texture — win the injunction in the hearing, or (armed branch) break the survey machinery at the site; break loose from a forced thing loosed along the survey line and evade a patient hunter on the escarpment road; emotionally weighted by the Last Practitioner; a complete legal-and-moral climax that also has teeth [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0047].
L2 investigatable: the substrate — the /Xam tradition as the Bleek-Lloyd 1870s record documents it, the Drakensberg rock-art (Vinnicombe, Lewis-Williams), the 2006 Sesana ruling, SASI and the Khomani San CPA, the TRC/apartheid context (Krog, Mandela), the 100,000-year Blombos pigment tradition, and the living non-San mining-town supernatural (the Xhosa/Zulu tokoloshe and impundulu) — all investigatable, all honoring the community's self-understanding [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41].
L3 metaphysical-as-real, never declared: the Drakensberg rock-art is Vimana Coordinate 1 of 6 — reading it (adult inscription mastery completing the Ch 10 partial-read and Ch 13 companion-decode chain) is real substrate-perception, the eland-imagery's documented sacred meaning (the rain-animal, the trance-shape) staying PRIMARY while the vril-substrate coordinate sits in the rock BENEATH the panel and never in the painting itself (the painting is not a map; the two are kept separate); the elder's knowledge the Thread-1/Thread-22 thread made mortal and specific — the convergence is not abstract but this one old man's ochre and this one eland-panel; the family FIELDS the substrate lightly here (a forced drill-wraith from the wounded mine-ground, held on a readable forcing-mark — the third entry in the modern arc's unattributed forced-asset chain, its forger unrecognized until Ch 63), and the hunt is now demonstrably two-directional — yet nothing of the thesis is spoken and no name given to the forcing hand (HL_0043) [SRC: ESOTERIC_GROUNDING] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043].

voice_and_crowd — the Last Practitioner's register (honored, spare, the living San tradition's own voice, never a caricature), Grondwet-Steyn's erudite procedural register, the House hunter's spare unhurried pursuer's register, Ana's returned-companion register, and the courtroom ambient; per-NPC registers deferred to the Voice registry [SRC: T99_Story_Spine_Build_Logic # 9.6] [POPULATE→T0_Voice_Registry].
sfx_substrate — the Drakensberg-shelter and Kalahari and courtroom and mining-site and town-edge terrain enum, the coordinate-read and coordinate-guardian and forensic-refutation environmental ambient, the forced-drill-wraith (the forcing-mark cue) and the escarpment-road near-miss, the Trade-9 inscription-sight on the rock-art panel (the Vimana-coordinate read), and the standoff register; §17.1 sacred-site and living-community discipline binds the rock-art and /Xam cues (Component-11-adjacent care) and the town-edge tokoloshe/impundulu cues (the forced construct clearly other) [SRC: T99_Story_Spine_Build_Logic # 9.6] [POPULATE→T0_SFX_Registry].
fragment carrier and sacred objects — the INSC_77H_CH41_FRAGMENT (a Layer-2 fragment of the 77-Hidden-Inscription spine that assembles across the arc and pays off at Ch 76); the Vimana Coordinate 1 (the first of six, read from the rock-art); sacred_objects_and_props include the ochre/pigment (honored sacred material, referenced not extracted), the case file, and the journal (its philosophical-peak entry), referenced not reproduced [SRC: T0_Inscription_Spine @ INSC_77H_CH41_FRAGMENT].
Mechanical anchors
dominant_combat_mode puzzle_routed (the legal-and-inscription fork — the concession hearing, the 1999-restitution precedent chain, the eland-panel coordinate-read, the assimilation-integrity core of the honest-non-villain inversion — is the primary mode; the secondary combat is the armed branch's survey-enforcer fork, the single forced drill-wraith, and the hunter's near-miss); the new drill-wraith + Verderer near-miss fold in as SECONDARY texture under the SAME puzzle_routed dominant, NOT a flip (re-checked vs Ch 40 stealth / Ch 42 environmental — puzzle_routed is clean between them) — mode-variety note: Ch 39 direct, Ch 40 stealth, Ch 41 puzzle_routed, so no two consecutive share a mode and the five-window Ch 37-41 (vril_management, environmental, direct, stealth, puzzle_routed) carries five distinct dominant modes, clearing HL_0049 and HL_0048; intensity PEAK — the triad's CLIMAX (Ch 39 standard, Ch 40 standard, Ch 41 peak; Ch 38 peak → Ch 39-40 standard → Ch 41 peak, no three consecutive peaks, HL_0048 held; the honest-non-villain inversion keeps PEAK supportable via the personal-scale assimilation stakes + the hunter's near-miss rather than raw combat volume); the five Pillar-1.12 beats are all present — combat (the survey enforcers on the armed branch, the forced drill-wraith, the hunter's near-miss, the constructs; typed at CH41_B11/CH41_B12), puzzle (the eland-panel coordinate-read, the 1999-restitution legal puzzle, the Precedent-Erasure forensic beat, the forcing-mark read; typed at CH41_B06/CH41_B10), learning (the San tradition documented via the /Xam record, the rock-art, the 1999-restitution/TRC record, the non-San town-edge tokoloshe/impundulu; typed at CH41_B02/CH41_B03), character (the Last Practitioner as the emotional core, the assimilation-integrity as the true engine, Ana's return, the healer's-child philosophical page; typed at CH41_B04/CH41_B07/CH41_B08), and transformation (the six-coordinate hunt beginning, the rock-art read to a coordinate, the plain new fact that she is catchable and the hunt runs both ways, the arc's stakes narrowing to one man; typed at CH41_B13) — mode_variety_check held at combat=Y;puzzle=Y;learning=Y;character=Y;transformation=Y (no R4 topography waiver at Ch 41) [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_41] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0049] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0048].
main_boss_win_condition pacify (paper — the injunction) OR part-break (armed — the mining machinery only, never people or the San) — the Moral Choice 2 fork (choose primary, strike secondary on the armed branch, axis 30/40/30, three phases, escalation evolving on the Ch 13 mine-works lineage) [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0041]; agility_course a Drakensberg escarpment-and-shelter traverse (the rock-art approach, or the concession-site infiltration on the armed branch) — biome-rotated against Ch 40's mine-camp course and Ch 42's course, with a Puzzle variant threading the coordinate-read, one course per chapter across three variants (HL_0079) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0079].
abilities_unlocked none this chapter — the Third-Eye deep-substrate perception (Probability Sight) from Ch 38 is USED here at its deepest yet (the rock-art coordinate-read, adult inscription mastery completing the Ch 10/13 chain), monotonic across the window; no new tier threshold [SRC: T0_Ability_Tree_Registry] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0026].
vril_sites none newly rowed at Ch 41 — the Drakensberg rock-art shelter (site_id drakensberg_rock_art_shelter) is the Vimana Coordinate 1 locus (an inscription-substrate coordinate, engaged through the perception mechanic at CH41_B06), the first of the six-coordinate hunt (toward the Ch 55 Vimana) [SRC: T0_Vril_Site_Registry] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0016].
scripts: the San (Maloti-Drakensberg) rock-art read as live inscription substrate (the eland-panel as a coordinate surface, per the documented Vinnicombe/Lewis-Williams record — referenced, never reproduced as sacred art), and the legal filings decoded via the Trade-9 inscription-sight; no new mortal-world writing-system debuts [SRC: T1_Languages_and_Script_Master].
inscription_spine: INSC_77H_CH41_FRAGMENT (a Layer-2 fragment of the 77-Hidden-Inscription spine that assembles across the arc and pays off at Ch 76); the Vimana Coordinate 1 read here (the six-coordinate hunt's first bearing) [SRC: T0_Inscription_Spine @ INSC_77H_CH41_FRAGMENT].
schools: no new school debuts; SCH_001 through SCH_008 carried (Trade-9 Inscription at its deepest read — the Vimana-coordinate rock-art) [SRC: T0_School_Registry @ SCH_008].
weapons roster-availability carried; chapter_anchored_weapon_add none — not a canonical weapon-anchor chapter (the four adds fall at Ch 9-10 / 29 / 47-48 / 57) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0056].
trades: no new home base roots here; the home bases and schools carry, and Trade 9 Inscription is the load-bearing craft (the Vimana-coordinate rock-art read) [SRC: T0_Trade_Registry @ TRADE_09].
familiars: no new bond this chapter; the carried roster (Shell W1, the Nile Crocodile W2, the Simurgh F4, the Koi W3, Taki G4, Berkut F5, the Raven F6, the Reindeer G6, Paravani F2 ranging, the Sanur Octopus W4 deferred and gated, the Child Familiar still lost) [SRC: T3_Familiars_Named]; companions_and_recurring_npcs CHAR_0002 the healer's child (the philosophical-peak journal entry, CH41_B08); CHAR_0017 Ana REJOINS here (CH41_B07, the triad-climax reunion); CHAR_0125 the Last Practitioner (Oupa Gert, sacred protected ally, CH41_B04); the House's recurring hunter (antagonist NW_C01, near-miss at CH41_B09, nameable-as-House) [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0017].
main_quest_beat the triad climax: the eland-panel read to Vimana Coordinate 1 (the six-coordinate hunt begins, CH41_B06), the moral-choice fork (paper injunction or armed machinery part-break, CH41_B10-B12) that holds the San land, the assimilation-integrity core (becoming worthy of the record, FORK_CH41_A at CH41_B13), the House hunter's near-miss (she is catchable now, CH41_B09) and the single forced drill-wraith freed (CH41_B11), and the Last-Practitioner tradition recorded with his blessing (path_bucket all four, none gating); side_questlines SQ3 ADVANCE, SQ4 ADVANCE, SQ12 ADVANCE, SQ11 ADVANCE, SQ1 ADVANCE [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0032].
integrity_divergence typed at FORK_CH41_A (§10b) — the moral-choice's OWNERSHIP sets direction (Substantial class per §5.1), action-keyed, with the paper-versus-armed win-condition typed as a non-integrity-graded boss-resolution variety at CH41_B10-B12 (BE_0041.P1/P2/P3, "variety at the win-condition level"); the armed-branch care line holds inside CH41_B12 (machinery part-broken, never people, never the San); direction_set_at_chapter_end {generative full weight behind the community's own fight, neutral helps at a remove, corrosive takes rather than is entrusted}; the five texture bands are the DERIVED axis (§18); convergence_node_id null (Ch 65 is the lock-in) [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 5.1].

rewards per-quest reward map authored in-intent — the Vimana Coordinate 1 (the six-coordinate hunt's first bearing), the San land held (injunction or machinery-break), the elder's own San knowledge recorded with his blessing, Ana returned to the party, the Sector-2 modern form mapped and the House hunter recognized (the felt near-miss that proves her catchable — the hunt two-directional), and the forced drill-wraith freed and its forcing-mark logged (the third entry in the modern arc's unattributed forced-asset chain); loot and seed anchors deferred [POPULATE→T0_RNG_Drop_Table] [POPULATE→T0_Quest_Seed_Registry].
encounter_mode/zone the concession hearing and Precedent-Erasure forensic beat (puzzle-legal) in the courtroom; the eland-panel coordinate-read (perceive/decode) at the Drakensberg shelter; the site standoff, survey enforcers, and the forced drill-wraith (combat, armed branch and the survey line) at the concession; the hunter's near-miss (Hunter Trigger, evade) on the escarpment road; the living non-San tokoloshe/impundulu at the mining-town edge (folkloric, no combat) — consistent with Key-sites and the puzzle_routed dominant mode; typed to CH41_B10 (hearing/P1/S3), CH41_B06 (coordinate-read/S2), CH41_B11 (standoff/drill-wraith/P2/S4), CH41_B12 (the fork's armed branch/P3/S1), CH41_B09 (the near-miss), CH41_B03 (the mining-town edge) [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 41].

age_stage: Adulthood (holding).
companions_present: the healer's child (CHAR_0002), co-witness (the modern arc's philosophical-journal peak opened here, CH41_B08); ANA (CHAR_0017) REJOINED — back in the party from Ch 41 forward (CH41_B07, the triad-climax reunion); the Last Practitioner (CHAR_0125, Oupa Gert) honored as a South-Africa contact (a sacred ally, his tradition recorded with his blessing); Tunde and the Mbuti guide-elder carried lightly.
familiars_present: the carried roster unchanged — Shell (W1), the Nile Crocodile (W2), the Simurgh (F4), the Koi (W3), Taki (G4), Berkut (F5), the Raven (F6), the Reindeer (G6); Paravani (F2) ranging; the Sanur Octopus (W4) deferred and gated; the Child Familiar still lost; no new bond at Ch 41.

found_family: the arc's accreted found-family carried and DEEPENED by Ana's return (CH41_B07); the Last Practitioner added as an honored, sacred South-Africa ally.
identity_hiding_status: CONCEALMENT_WITH_HOSTILE_RECOGNITION — she still conceals what she is; the House of Velheim's EXTRACTIVE modern form now mapped (the third of the modern operations), the chain up still dark above the operative (Cassius held for Ch 76); the thesis held for Ch 77.
vimana_hunt_state: OPEN — the numbered six-coordinate Vimana hunt has BEGUN, Coordinate 1 of 6 in hand (read at CH41_B06 from the Drakensberg rock-art); five coordinates remain, the hunt running toward the Ch 55 Vimana; vimana_precursor_seed now TRUE.
path_states: direction and magnitude set at FORK_CH41_A (§10b) — generative full weight behind the community's own fight, neutral helps at a remove, corrosive takes rather than is entrusted; the paper-versus-armed win-condition (CH41_B10-B12) is a separate, non-integrity-graded boss-resolution variety; integrity_level near L3 Drifting with path_bucket UNLOCKED (bands derived, never option labels, §18); the journal's philosophical-peak entry (CH41_B08) carried forward; the Sealed Letter's deepest last third still sealed toward its Ch 66 close. New carried threads: the House's recurring hunter (the enforcement champion named at Ch 38) felt in his first modern near-miss (CH41_B09) — she is now demonstrably catchable, the hunt two-directional, his escalation running toward his Ch 59 open engagement; the family's third on-page fielding of the substrate witnessed (the forced drill-wraith's forcing-mark logged at CH41_B11 as the third entry in the modern arc's unattributed forced-asset chain, its forger unrecognized until Ch 63).
Seam state-diffs (machine-checkable exit→entry assertions over ws state keys; the prose bridge stays in the transitions file)
The CH_40 → CH_41 seam (pinned first per the entry-seam discipline — the Ch 40 end state is the hard constraint CH41_B01 opens from):
assert ws.age_stage: Adulthood (internal 18, holding from Ch 39) · ws.identity_hiding_status: CONCEALMENT_WITH_HOSTILE_RECOGNITION, pressure MODERATE (unchanged at entry) · companions: the healer's child present at entry; Ana absent at entry — her next canonical node is Ch 41, and she rejoins WITHIN the chapter (CH41_B07), not at entry · ws.integrity_score: near the L3 Drifting band at entry, moved by the Ch-40 moral choice · vimana_precursor_seed: FALSE at entry (the numbered hunt has not yet begun; CH41_B06 opens it) · the EXTRACTIVE Sector-2 operation unmapped at entry (CH41_B01 maps it).
The CH_41 → CH_42 seam:
assert ws.age_stage: Adulthood (internal 18, holding — no further placed jumps) · ws.identity_hiding_status: CONCEALMENT_WITH_HOSTILE_RECOGNITION, pressure MODERATE (unchanged) · companions: Ana (CHAR_0017) traveling beside her from CH41_B07 forward; Oupa Gert (CHAR_0125) carried lightly as a modern contact · vimana_precursor_seed: TRUE, held (Coordinate 1 of 6 in hand from CH41_B06; no coordinate reads at Ch 42) · ws.integrity_score: per FORK_CH41_A (Substantial ownership-direction set at CH41_B13) · mark_carried: {south_africa community-state per FORK_CH41_A} → forward_track [CH_65], read at the Ch-65 recombination-exam's declared Ch 39-65 community-mark read, non-gating (the prior "no confirmed later read yet" is superseded with its evidence at the FORK_CH41_A resolution bullet) · ws.reputation_biography_propagation: the Verderer's Ch-41 near-miss logged (CH41_B09), his escalation running toward the Ch 59 open engagement · the forced drill-wraith's forcing-mark logged as the third entry in the modern arc's unattributed forced-asset chain (CH41_B11), unattributed until Ch 63.
Decisions surfaced
Ch 41 surfaced these decisions; the grounded and creative-within-vision ones are resolved inline with reasoning shown (Josh-override-able at RR-42), and no cardinal un-decidable is left open.
The elevated-care authoring above the registry's standard tier — RESOLVED-WITHIN-VISION (§17.1): the registry tiers Ch 41 standard, but the San as a protected people and the Last Practitioner as a sacred inviolate NPC warrant elevated care in practice; authored accordingly (the Practitioner never a target and the emotional core; /Xam sacred content per the documented record, never reproduced; the "Bushman" slur corrected; San agency shown via the community's own 1999 ≠Khomani restitution). RESOLVED at RR-42 (living-source): the Chapter_Index cultural_depiction_tier for Ch 41 is raised from standard to elevated to match the authored care [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0051].
The Last Practitioner's naming — RESOLVED (RR-42, SET): honored in-entry as "the Last Practitioner" (a title); his given name is SET to Gert (address "Oupa Gert") at the Layer-3 naming pass. The Last Practitioner and the elder "Oupa" are the same person — one governing name, see the elder's-naming decision below [SRC: NAMING_METHOD].
The Moral Choice 2 fork and its grading — RESOLVED (per the boss roster + the integrity system): the second of the sanctioned Ch 40-41 double, a paper-versus-armed fork both fully built (variety at the win-condition level), the armed branch's care line absolute (machinery part-broken, never people, never the San); the integrity mark grades the OWNERSHIP of the choice (holding the land and recording the tradition at the old man's direction and for his people, versus centering or using him), not the fork chosen — de-telegraphed per the Ch-40 precedent [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0041] [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 5.1].
The six-coordinate hunt's opening — RESOLVED (per the pack + T2 canon): the Drakensberg rock-art reads as Vimana Coordinate 1 of 6, converting the unnumbered Ch 10/13 clues into the numbered hunt that begins here and runs to the Ch 55 Vimana; vimana_precursor_seed set TRUE at Ch 41 (the first bearing, not the craft) [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc] [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41].
The NW_0038 operative name — RESOLVED (grounded naming, living-source): the registry rows NW_0038 as "named-TBD-Phase-6"; the roster's author-created Afrikaner-legal name Advocate Barend Grondwet-Steyn ("the Paper Land-Hunter" — retitled at RR-42 from "the Paper Eland-Hunter" per the Care Doctrine, see below; grondwet = constitution/ground-law) is adopted (per the naming method — a South-African mining-law register, ribbing on a land-thief-in-a-suit), and the Antagonist_Network row is aligned to it [SRC: NAMING_METHOD] [SRC: T0_Antagonist_Network_Registry @ NW_0038].
CULTURE NO_GO CORRECTED (elevated-care critic wf_a25f4c84, culture + holistic NO_GO — the range's most consequential fix) — the first draft carried factual errors about a real living people, several traceable to the enrich pack's own conflations; all corrected in-entry: (a) the /Xam are NOT a living unbroken tradition — they are Bleek-Lloyd's 1870s Karoo informants, now extinct; the archive exists because the tradition was being destroyed; the Maloti-Drakensberg painters were San but not /Xam, and Lewis-Williams reads the art INTERPRETIVELY through the /Xam record by analogy. Reframed: the living community is the ≠Khomani San; the elder is a working ≠Khomani elder and one of the last N|uu speakers (critically endangered, not extinct), actively teaching/revitalizing — NOT a passive magical-native prop. (b) Sesana v. Attorney General (2006) is a BOTSWANA ruling (Basarwa, Central Kalahari) — NOT South African precedent; the SA anchor is the community's OWN 1999 ≠Khomani restitution (Northern Cape / Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park), with Sesana relabeled a non-binding regional reference. (c) WHITE-SAVIOR structure removed — the ≠Khomani Communal Property Association drives its OWN case; the protagonist ASSISTS and abides by their decisions ("never a combat target" is not "never an agent"). (d) APPROPRIATION — the sacred eland-panel keeps its documented religious meaning PRIMARY; the vril-substrate coordinate sits in the rock BENEATH the panel, never the painting itself (the "rather than decoration" false binary deleted); the knowledge-recording is the community's OWN revitalization, left with the elder's grandchildren. (e) geography Central-Kalahari→southern-Kalahari/Northern-Cape; the 100,000-year Blombos framing tightened to a deep-time MATERIAL thread; the San-specific apartheid history surfaced (mid-century removals; 31-Battalion tracker conscription); the villain steelmanned; Ana's return given cost. FLAG FOR JOSH (RR-42): the enrich pack + RCM L4442 conflate "/Xam-Khomani-San" and cite Sesana as the SA precedent — reconcile the RCM/pack to the ≠Khomani/1999 anchor (living-source) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41] [SRC: NAMING_METHOD].
The elder's naming — RESOLVED (RR-42, SET to Gert): honored in-entry as "Oupa Gert" (Oupa = grandfather, the community's honorific; Gert his given name) with full agency/voice/stake authored. Gert is an Afrikaans given name in the documented ≠Khomani/N|uu-speaker register (the least-appropriative respectful choice — no near-extinct-language vocabulary invented, no sacred meaning claimed), screened clear of every real figure (Dawid/Regopstaan/Isak Kruiper, Katrina Esau, //Kabbo, Willie Eyman); rowed in T0_Character_Index [SRC: NAMING_METHOD].
The "Paper Eland-Hunter" villain epithet — RESOLVED (RR-42, retitled per the Care Doctrine; Grid C/D/E MAJOR): the original epithet branded the villain with the San's MOST sacred being (the eland / rain-animal / trance-shape) — legible as indictment (he hunts what is sacred with a pen) but instrumentalizing the sacred symbol against the chapter's own care thesis (the eland held wholly and only sacred, "and never becomes hers"). RETITLED to "the Paper Land-Hunter" — the indictment now lands through his ground-law hypocrisy and paper-legal land-grab (he hunts title over a people's ancestral land with filings instead of a spear), no sacred San symbol conscripted; propagated to BOSS_PERSONAS / Boss_Encounter / Antagonist_Network [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0041] [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 17.1].
The modern-arc re-flesh (Task #48, the four AAA moves — a HEAVY node, ELEVATED care) — APPLIED (grounded / creative-within-vision, per docs/proposals/modern_arc_staging/modern_scope_39_45.md): (1) LIVING-SUPERNATURAL with the SAN SACRED KEPT PRISTINE — the playable supernatural is routed entirely OFF the San sacred onto the NON-San mining-town belief: the Xhosa/Zulu tokoloshe (the raised-bed custom) and impundulu (the lightning-bird), engaged as Frame-A living belief moved through and never used, kept distinct from the San; (2) VELHEIM ASSET (LIGHT, per the honest-non-villain inversion) — the advocate is DEMOTED to the visible legal weight (the true engine is the assimilation-integrity of becoming worthy of Oupa Gert's record; the danger is HER OWN extraction), the House's recurring ENFORCEMENT champion (the Verderer, NW_C01) makes his FIRST felt modern re-emergence as a hunt-as-prey NEAR-MISS (she is catchable now, the hunt two-directional; his fully-fightable engagement reserved for Ch 59), and a SINGLE forced drill-wraith (new sub-boss BE_0041_S4, Construct-Kit Class 2, deployed UNATTRIBUTED) is wrenched from the wounded Witwatersrand mine-ground — NEVER a San being and never the town's honest tokoloshe; (3) MAGIC-IS-THE-HOW — vril-forensics on the concession filings (the net-reduced Precedent-Erasure beat) + the coordinate read off the substrate BENEATH the eland-panel (never the sacred painting); NO wronged-dead beat here (the San removals / 31-Battalion history kept in the honest-record register, not a summonable one); (4) COMBAT-NEVER-STOPS — the Hunter Trigger near-miss + the drill-wraith + the armed-branch survey-enforcers (machinery part-broken, never people, never the San). MATERIALIZED-ARGUMENT NET-REDUCE: S3 Precedent-Erasure demoted from a full construct-fight to a light forensic beat (the flagship stays at Ch 42). Dominant mode KEPT puzzle_routed/PEAK (the assimilation core + the near-miss keep PEAK; the drill-wraith/near-miss fold as secondary texture; re-checked vs Ch 40 stealth / Ch 42 environmental). Header range_id R_39_41 → R_39_50 (aligned to the ACTIVE T0_Chapter_Index). Reveal discipline: the House and its recurring hunter are nameable post-38, but the FORGING hand stays unnamed (unattributed → Ch 63), no Cassius (Ch 76), no thesis (Ch 77); reveal + care + fidelity re-verified after the prose rewrite [SRC: T4_House_of_Velheim_Canonical # 9.1] [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # THE VERDERER] [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 41].
The v3.1 conversion (this pass, 2026-07-14/15) — RESOLVED-APPLIED: the twenty-block v2.5 form restructured in place to the beat→fork→state graph per docs/spine/V3_CONVERSION_RUNBOOK.md, mirroring the CH_02 pilot's in-place layout. 4 prose main-quest bullets typed to 13 beats (CH41_B01-B13); the Moral Choice 2's two axes SEPARATED per v3 grammar — the paper-versus-armed win-condition variety typed as a non-integrity-graded boss-resolution at CH41_B10-B12 (BE_0041.P1/P2/P3), the ownership-of-the-choice direction-set typed as the sole fork, FORK_CH41_A, anchored at the aftermath beat CH41_B13 (mirroring the CH_02/CH_13 precedent of anchoring the durable direction-set fork at the aftermath beat, not the boss-fight beat); the v2.5 SQ-Elder-and-Language row (stage OPEN, not a canonical-12 slug) folded into SQ1 fairy_tale_folklore, which already advances this chapter [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 5.1].
CH_13's mine-labor-record mark, consumed — RESOLVED-APPLIED: FORK_CH13_A (docs/spine/CH_13.md, already v3-converted) declares forward_track [CH_41] on its community-state mark (keyed south_africa, written via the mine's labor-record and the protected-community standing at the Cape mine); Ch 41 is the designated consumer. Typed the read at CH41_B03 (witwatersrand_mining_country, non-gating — the mark textures reception, never gates the case) [SRC: CH_13 # FORK_CH13_A].
The unattributed-forger leak — RESOLVED-APPLIED (reveal-discipline fix, per the runbook's pre-Ch-63 unattributed-forger gotcha): the v2.5 entry named the drill-wraith's forger by his post-Ch-63 name six times (Threads advancing, Boss structure ×2, Elevated-care framing, Asset anchors, Decisions surfaced) despite each instance ALSO asserting "deployed UNATTRIBUTED" / "its forger unnamed" / "unrecognized until Ch 63" in the same breath — a self-contradicting leak matching the known recurring reflesh-combat-facet forger-name-leak pattern. All six instances corrected in-place to the document's own already-established safe register ("a drill-wraith," "the forced drill-wraith," "deployed unattributed") — no new canon introduced, the correction reconciles the entry against its own stated reveal rule. The forger's name now appears nowhere in this file pre-Ch-63, as the reveal ladder requires.
Registry drift surfaced at the v3 FK join — QUEUED for the orchestrator's serialized landing (not written here): (a) T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry BE_0041_S4's boss_name, target_type, and sources cells each still carry the same forger-name leak the spine carried — corrected value drops the forger's name in favor of the row's own "deployed UNATTRIBUTED" language; (b) T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry BE_0041_S3's primary_verb reads "strike," contradicting the SAME row's own engagement_modes_object ("no weapon engagement, no San in the arena"), this spine's Boss-structure text, and BOSS_PERSONAS (all three agree S3 carries no weapon engagement) — corrected to "refute," matching the row's own phase_breakdown_object ("read/refute (forensic)") and win_reward ("refutes the motions"); (c) T0_Character_Index CHAR_0071 (Kxao, a san_shaman_elder of the JUHOAN lineage, first appearing Ch_10_Rift_Valley) carries a stale chapters_present tag "Ch_41_modern_full_vimana_clue_read" — CH_41's ratified elder is Gert (CHAR_0125, khomani_san_elder), a different person of a different San sub-group; "Kxao" appears nowhere in CH_41.md's text. Full detail in the return payload's registry_corrections.
