Chapter 36 — Mid-Atlantic: The Sailor's Knowledge and the Water Where No One Watches
Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build, spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the enrich.py pack and the Boss_Encounter registry. Standard-care chapter (CVD §6.2); the §17.1 universal cultural hard lines bind, but no living cultural community sits at risk here — the open mid-Atlantic passage depicts the documented fifteenth-century Portuguese navigational tradition (the volta do mar, the astrolabe and the rutter, the sailor's knowledge) credited as maritime achievement (Frame-A), and the "boss" is the ocean's own convergence current, a phenomenon read as a system and never a person. This is the arc's canonical surveillance-gap: for the first time since the hunt turned active, the protagonist sails beyond the reach of the watching, and the ABSENCE of it is the Thread-3 anchor — presence-as-limit, the net shown to need ports and ledgers and paid eyes it cannot plant on the open sea, never full absence (that singular sanctuary is reserved to Ch 57, D-01). Reveal-timing note: the surveillance-gap confirms only that the already-established institutional enemy is infrastructural and has limits; no House-of-Velheim name, family, generational scope, awareness-tier taxonomy, or origin-tie is surfaced, and the five pattern-components stay dark until Ch 38. Drafted is not canonical.
region_primary the open mid-Atlantic Ocean — the sailing approach to the Azores across the horse latitudes and the trade-wind and current systems of the North Atlantic gyre, region_id mid_atlantic [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 36].
region_secondary the open ocean and its sailing wind systems (the northeast trades, the doldrums, the Gulf Stream and North Atlantic Drift, the Azores High); the Sargasso-edge waters [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_36].
region_chapter_set — this page anchors Ch 36 as the open-ocean interior of the Atlantic crossing (Ch 33-38), the first of the two quiet mid-ocean staircase beats (Ch 36, Ch 37) that lead to the Ch 38 Azores midpoint; the coverage audit confirms this ground adequate as-authored — NOT a SPREAD/LENGTHEN/RESCOPE target [SRC: EXPANDED_COVERAGE_MAP] [SRC: CULTURAL_COVERAGE_AUDIT].
biome_primary the open blue-water ocean — the horse-latitude calms and the trade-wind belts, the Sargasso weed-lines and the swelling mid-ocean swell; climate subtropical-oceanic with the Atlantic vril-field-boundary gradient deepening toward the midpoint [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 36].
era Atlantic sailing era, composite — the Henry-the-Navigator-era foundational period through the post-1488 long-distance maritime regime (the volta do mar circulation-navigation at its documented mastery), reached through the chapter's time-fluctuation windows [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_36].
range_id R_26_38; spine_status drafted; canonical_hard_line_flag FALSE; author_in_loop_required FALSE (standard care; no living community at risk on the open passage); cultural_depiction_tier standard [SRC: T1_Build_Pipeline_Contracts # 9.5 Spine Entry Schema] [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 6.2].
protagonist_age 17 at start and 17 at end (internal, designer-only, never surfaced; age_stage Adolescence; held across the vigil — the next placed D-06 jump seats on the Ch 37 leg toward young-adult by the Ch 38 Azores vril-stabilization) [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_36].
identity_hiding_status CONCEALMENT_WITH_HOSTILE_RECOGNITION at start and end (the carried ambient state); identity_hiding_pressure LOW — this is the surveillance-gap: there is no antagonist-family operational presence on the open ocean (NW_0034, VRIL_STANDALONE, UNAWARE, a structural limit of the distributed network), so the hostile-recognition pressure lifts entirely here even as the carried concealment state persists [SRC: T0_Antagonist_Network_Registry @ NW_0034] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0028].
vimana_precursor_seed FALSE — the numbered six-coordinate hunt runs from Ch 41 and controlled flight arrives at Ch 55; Ch 36 is open-ocean sail (the mid-Atlantic passage from the Ch 35 Cape Verde crossroads toward the western approach and the Azores midpoint), a leg of the ground-and-water Atlantic crossing [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
hard_line_binding none at chapter level (canonical_hard_line_flag FALSE); the shaping constraints are the Thread-3 surveillance-gap discipline (presence-as-limit, NOT the full antagonist-free absence reserved to the Ch 57 hard line, D-01), the §17.9 reveal discipline (the net shown to have limits, the five components dark), the environmental-boss protocol (the convergence current and the storm are the playable layer, no person invented, HL_0051-analogue), and HL_0049/HL_0048 (mode variety — the navigation-perception environmental mode breaks the Ch 35 stealth mode) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0051] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0049].
Continuity anchor (SSBL §9.3 — Ch 36 start state = Ch 35 end state)
Ch 36 opens from Ch 35's committed end state [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_35]: the protagonist an adolescent (internal age crystallizing across the crossing), her inscription at Adeptus Minor, carrying from Cape Verde the stolen ledger that names ports and prices and never a master, the Kriolu she learned at its formation, the sodade of a stolen song, the name of a woman who walked out of a coffle, and the cold clean knowledge that the enemy is now institutional and nameless and infrastructural; the healer's child (CHAR_0002) traveling as the active primary human companion and journal-keeper; Ana (CHAR_0017) having parted after Rome, her next canonical node Ch 41; Nakhoda Binti Hassan (CHAR_0056) accounted-for but not aboard (an Indian-Ocean dhow captain, her Ch 38 completionist reappearance held if ally-status carries). Shell (W1) the sustained-bond Water familiar always present (a freshwater Flores softshell, carried but out of its element on the deep sea), Kasa (W5, the green sea-turtle bonded off the Swahili coast at Ch 8) reappearing here for the open-ocean crossing as the true ocean-traveler — her sense of latitude and her reading of the currents the living echo of the chapter's navigation theme — the Nile Crocodile (W2) carried, the Simurgh (F4) carried, the Koi (W3) carrying its Koi-to-Dragon evolution, Taki (G4) carried, Berkut (F5) carried, the Raven (F6, the Huginn-Muninn pair) carried, and the Reindeer (G6, the Sámi-tradition bond and cross-chapter memory-bridge) carried, with Paravani the peacock (F2) ranging, the Sanur Octopus (W4) carried deferred and gated, and the Child Familiar still lost and believed dead; all trade home bases carried; the SCH_001 through SCH_008 schools carried; the Crown device force-bound; concealment at CONCEALMENT_WITH_HOSTILE_RECOGNITION but the pressure lifted here; the Ch 8 Sealed Letter still an uncracked fairy-script mystery bound toward its Ch 66 close; and the antagonist pattern still entirely unassembled by the player [SRC: T3_Core_Characters # The Healer's Child] [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0002]. What changes here is the quiet. For the length of the deep passage there is nothing to fight and no one watching — only the sea, and the knowledge of how to read it, and the first breath she has drawn in a long time that no eye is measuring.
Body prose
She sails into the middle of the ocean and, for the first time since the watching turned to hunting, no one is looking for her. It takes her days to trust it. She keeps waiting for the beat-too-long glance, the boy who follows, the clerk who prices — and there is nothing, only water to every horizon and the working of the ship, and slowly she understands why: the net that has hunted her since the last three landfalls is made of ports and ledgers and paid eyes, and out here there are none. It cannot plant a watcher on the open sea. It has limits after all, and she has found one, and the finding is its own small intelligence — not that the thing is gone, but that it is a thing of harbors and paper, and there are places its reach simply stops. The relief of it is enormous and strange. She had forgotten what it felt like to be only herself, unmeasured, a girl on a boat in the blue.
So the chapter is a vigil, and its craft is the oldest one the sea asks: to read the ocean as a system and cross it by working with what it is rather than against it. The Portuguese sailors aboard know a thing that looks like magic and is only patience and attention — the volta do mar, the turn of the sea, the trick of sailing away from your destination into the great wheel of the Atlantic winds so that the wheel carries you home. They read latitude off the sun with an astrolabe and keep their reckoning with a log-line and a knotted rope, and they hold in their heads a map of currents no chart shows: the horse latitudes where the wind dies and the water glasses over, the trade belts, the weed-lines of the Sargasso, the long circular road of the gyre. She learns it from them — the reckoning, the reading of the sky and the swell — and it settles into her the way the inscription settles, a competence that becomes a kind of perception, until she can feel the currents the way she feels the substrate. And there is a third reader beside her: Kasa, the green sea-turtle she bonded off the Swahili coast, ranges the deep water alongside the ship, and the turtle's own instinct for latitude and current — the reading of the ocean's roads with no chart at all — is the same knowledge the sailors carry in their heads and the same the inscription gives her, one truth found by three different creatures down three different roads, and she feels all of them run together in her hands on the tiller.
And there is a storm, because the ocean is indifferent and does not spare a vigil. It comes up out of the deep swell and she rides it by reading it — the same current-pattern she learned in the calm reappearing inside the weather at double speed — and she brings the ship through not by fighting the sea but by understanding it, which is the whole lesson of the water. Under it all the vril-field she has felt gathering off every coast since the last islands deepens here, out where there is no land to dilute it, and she can feel the residue of every sailor who ever crossed this water still faintly in it, a memory the ocean keeps. The Azores are a rumor on the western horizon, a darker line she is not yet close enough to name, and the field thickens toward them like water toward a drain, and she knows without being told that whatever is waiting at the middle of the sea is waiting there.
On one of the still nights before the western line resolves, she dreams of a high bright fall of water and a flat pool lying quiet beneath it, and a quality of light she has no word for; it is gone the instant she wakes, she cannot get it back, and she does not try.
She uses the quiet the way the hunted learn to use quiet — not to rest, exactly, but to gather. She sits her watches and reads her sea and lets the found-family she has carried this far be, for a stretch, simply people on a boat. But she does not let the peace make her simple: the caravel under her is the same kind of ship, sailing the same volta do mar, that opened the trade she has just fled across two islands, and the men who teach her the sea are ordinary and not villains and their skill is nonetheless the skill that carried the coffles — and she holds both, the beauty of the knowledge and the use it has been put to, because to let either cancel the other would be a lie she has watched other people tell themselves. The healer's child writes the crossing down, the sailor's knowledge and the harder truth set beside it. And when the western line resolves at last into something she can steer for, she takes it, carrying the sailor's knowledge in her hands and the deepening field in her chest, out of the one water where no one watches and toward the place where, she is increasingly sure, everything the crossing has been building to is going to happen.
Threads advancing
Mirrored to the canonical Thread grid (the per-thread rows below, keyed THREAD_NN) and the per-chapter blocks of T1_Threads_22 (canonical-22 names, verified against the grid, never inferred); the mid-Atlantic is the surveillance-gap and Navigation-plateau vigil node [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_36].
Thread 1 Vril Parallels — ESCALATION: the sailor-residual-vril-signature-in-human-vessel-memory, the faint residue of every crosser the ocean keeps, perceivable aboard as a secondary anchor and felt through the perception mechanic, never declared [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 1] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_01].
Thread 2 Serpent — NOT_PRESENT: the open-ocean crossing carries no serpent anchor across Ch 34-37 [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 2] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_02].
Thread 3 Antagonist Family — ANCHOR (the surveillance-gap negative-anchor; presence-as-limit, the family/name/pattern still held): the distributed-network operational limit at open-ocean-sailing distance, the one water the net cannot reach — the ABSENCE of the watching authored as a Thread-3 anchor that shows the enemy to be infrastructural and bounded (needing ports and ledgers), never the full antagonist-free absence reserved to Ch 57 (D-01), and never the pattern [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 3] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_03].
Thread 8 Mystery Schools — ESCALATION: the Atlantic-vril-field-boundary deepening out where there is no land to dilute it, the offshore intensification building toward the Ch 38 Azores midpoint primary [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 8] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_08].
Thread 11 Trickster — ANCHOR: the Atlantic trickster traditions of the deep-sea sailors — the horse-latitude and crossing-the-line lore, the sea-trickster superstition of the pre-electronic passage — honored as the sailors' own living tradition (thematically correct for Thread 11 Trickster). Reconciliation note: the Thread_Grid and enrich pack support this trickster reading, but the T1_Threads_22 master Ch-36 grid line assigns Thread 11 to a journal-synthesis Portuguese-scholar-network cross-reference (a content mismatch for the Trickster thread); the trickster anchor is used here and the conflict is flagged for RR-42 living-source reconciliation [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_11] [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 11].
Thread 18 Sacred Mountains — ANCHOR: the ancient-world close-anchor of the Trade-10 Navigation tradition, the sailor's knowledge reaching its documented ancient-and-medieval plateau here (the volta do mar and the reckoning), the thread's Navigation-mastery anchor [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 18] [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_18].
Civilizational marks (the builders-of-knowledge layer, §9.5 mandatory)
Each mark clears a group-A significance lens and anchors to the RCM verified-canon paragraph or a named primary source; the fifteenth-century Portuguese sailors are authored as the masters of a navigational science that made the ocean crossable — a knowledge of wind and current and star as sophisticated as any astronomy [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The volta do mar and Atlantic circulation-navigation — the documented Portuguese discovery that the Atlantic wind-and-current gyre could be worked WITH rather than against (sailing away from the destination into the wheel of the winds so the wheel carries the ship home), the navigational breakthrough that made systematic ocean crossing possible (Russell, Diffie and Winius), credited to Portuguese maritime achievement [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 36] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
Latitude-sailing and the instruments of reckoning — the astrolabe and cross-staff for latitude off the sun, the log-line and traverse-board for dead reckoning, and the roteiro rutter tradition, the documented instrument-and-method science of the fifteenth-century open-ocean passage, credited to the sailors' own developed practice [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 36] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The sailor's knowledge of the ocean system — the read of the horse latitudes, the trade belts, the doldrums, the Sargasso weed-lines, and the great gyre, an empirical oceanography held in the heads of working sailors long before it was charted, credited as the deep competence of the maritime tradition [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 36] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
Component-11 status — none at Ch 36: the open ocean anchors no megalith or archaeoastronomy site of the CVD's Component-11 catalog [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 36] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
Everything-woven (the twelve facets, each a real presence, none name-checked)
The mid-Atlantic is authored as a hub in its documented web — the Ch 35 Cape Verde crossroads and the whole slave-trade Atlantic behind, the Ch 38 Azores midpoint ahead where the field converges, and the sailing traditions of every people who ever crossed this water woven through the residual-memory the ocean keeps — never an empty void; the relational edges are the crossing itself and the knowledge that spans it, controlled for relevance at the significance-lens pass [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].
Combat routes through the convergence-current and the storm-passage (the environmental boss) and the sea's indifference — there is no person to fight and no community to protect on the open ocean.
Exploration crosses the horse-latitude calms, the trade belts, the Sargasso edge, and the deep swell toward the western horizon.
Discovery is the surveillance-gap (the water where no one watches), the read of the ocean system, and the deepening field toward the Azores.
Puzzles are the current-reading and dead-reckoning navigation, the storm-passage read at double tempo, and the volta do mar circulation solved as a system.
Mystery is the darker line on the western horizon and the certainty that whatever the crossing is building to waits at the middle of the sea.
Lore is the volta do mar, the reckoning instruments and the roteiro tradition, the sailor-superstition of the horse latitudes, and the residual-memory of the crossers.
Trades advance Trade 10 Navigation to its documented ancient-and-medieval mastery plateau (the spine of the chapter); the earlier trade homes and the carried schools hold.
Gathering is the Sargasso-edge provisioning and the water and stores of a long passage.
Side quests run the pirate-and-naval (the lead), the anomalous-phenomena (the vril-field deepening), the fairy-tale-and-folklore (the sailor-trickster lore), the astrology-and-psychology (the star-reckoning), and the secret-society (the surveillance-gap, held) lines (block 11).
Engineering is the caravel's rig read as a system and the instruments of navigation.
Folklore is the deep-sea sailors' trickster and crossing-the-line traditions and the horse-latitude superstition, honored as the sailors' own.
Superstition is the sea-lore of the becalmed latitudes and the crossing, honored as tradition and never asserted as literal.

Inter-chapter travel — arrival by sail from the Ch 35 Cape Verde crossroads, departure by sail toward the western approach and the Azores midpoint (Ch 37), ground-and-water, no Vimana [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Travel Methods by Arc].
Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)
The main boss is a role-title environmental phenomenon and never a person — the ocean's own convergence current, read as a system to be out-thought — with light sub-beats across different threads; the environmental-boss protocol is the playable layer (HL_0051-analogue), the fight blending navigation-perception, a storm-passage, and a folklore-and-field texture, never a single mode (HL_0078) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0078].

The v2.5 "Climax and branch beats" named truly_good / good_enough / neutral / evil as branch labels — the retired vocabulary. v3.1 keys the options by ACTION with a direction; the texture bands are the DERIVED axis (§18); the surveillance-gap relief and the deepening-field warning frame every branch, and the sea carries her to the midpoint regardless [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 5.1].

Key ally NPCs
The healer's child (CHAR_0002) — the primary human companion and journal-keeper; here the journal takes in the crossing and the sailor's knowledge, and the child's steadiness lets the vigil be a gathering rather than a dread; inviolate, never a target [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0002].
The Portuguese sailors of the crossing — the ship's master and crew who carry the volta do mar and the reckoning, ordinary working sailors who teach her the sea's own knowledge, an ambient honored maritime community and never targets, individuated with named leads at region-build where a scene requires, never a deferred name [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 36] [SRC: NAMING_METHOD].

Protected-chapter combat framing (ruling 5)
No living cultural community sits at risk on the open mid-Atlantic passage; the Portuguese sailors are honored working masters of their craft and never targets, and there is no antagonist-family presence to route combat through (the surveillance-gap, NW_0034 VRIL_STANDALONE) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003]. The chapter's playable combat layer is the environmental-boss protocol — the convergence current and the storm-passage, a phenomenon read and ridden and never a person — so the chapter carries a real playable challenge without inventing a person to fight or a community to endanger (the environmental-boss protocol as the playable layer, the HL_0051-analogue for a non-hard-line relief node); the sea is indifferent and a misread costs time and searoom, not blood [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0051]. The Portuguese maritime tradition is credited as its own achievement (Frame-A), and the surveillance-gap is authored as presence-as-limit — the net shown to be infrastructural and bounded — never the full antagonist-free sanctuary reserved to Ch 57 (D-01) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0004].
Anti-fringe / Frame-A flags
The Atlantic anomalies and the deepening field — at-risk claim: the mid-Atlantic as a real Bermuda-Triangle, a graveyard of ships, or an Atlantis. Canonical framing: the horse latitudes, the Sargasso, and the gyre are documented oceanography and meteorology, the volta do mar a documented navigational technique, and the vril-field-boundary is the game's substrate surfaced only through the perception mechanic (L3), never declared as a real-world anomaly or a lost civilization [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING] [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 36].
The sailor-superstition — at-risk claim: rendering the horse-latitude and crossing-the-line lore as literal supernatural fact or as a savage-other exoticism. Canonical framing: the deep-sea sailors' trickster and superstition traditions are honored as the sailors' own living folklore, a real cultural tradition of the sea, never asserted as literal and never exoticized [SRC: ESOTERIC_GROUNDING] [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 36].
The surveillance-gap — at-risk claim: leaking the antagonist pattern early, or reading the gap as full antagonist-free absence (which would break the Ch 57 hard line). Canonical framing: the gap is a Thread-3 presence-as-limit anchor — the already-established institutional enemy shown to be infrastructural and bounded (needing ports and ledgers it cannot plant at sea) — within the D-14 ceiling; the five pattern-components stay dark, and the gap is distinct from the singular Ch 57 antagonist-free sanctuary (D-01) [SRC: ESOTERIC_GROUNDING] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043].
Three-layer surfacing
L1 self-contained: a sailing set-piece — read the ocean system, learn the volta do mar and the reckoning, and bring the ship through a storm by understanding the sea — a complete seamanship chapter needing no metaphysics [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0047].
L2 investigatable: the documented fifteenth-century Portuguese navigational substrate — the volta do mar (Russell, Diffie and Winius), the astrolabe and cross-staff and log-line, the roteiro rutter tradition, the wind-and-current regime, and the sea-shanty and piloto-practice culture (Hugill) — the investigatable sailor's-knowledge substrate, all Trade-10 mastery content [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 36].
L3 metaphysical-as-real, never declared: the Trade-10 field-mechanics are the game's most direct Layer-3 routing (wayfinding through ocean consciousness, Pillar 9, surfaced through the navigation-perception mechanic), the residual-vril-signature-in-vessel-memory is perceivable aboard, and the Atlantic-vril-field-boundary deepens toward the Ch 38 midpoint — the crossing made perceptible, the field intensifying as she nears the middle, with zero thesis, no reveal-figure named, and the five pattern-components dark [SRC: ESOTERIC_GROUNDING] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043].
Asset anchors
creatures_and_fauna — the convergence-current and storm as environmental phenomena (never living beings, combat_permission environmental-not-person); open-ocean fauna — the Sargasso weed-community and its crabs and fish, the pelagic seabirds and the flying fish and the whales of the deep passage (ambient), and any storm-driven hazard (environmental); the carried familiars (per Mechanical anchors), with Kasa (W5, the green sea-turtle) reappearing as the ocean-traveler here and Shell (W1, a freshwater softshell) present but out of its element [SRC: T3_Familiars_Named] [POPULATE→T0_Creature_Roster].
architecture_set_dressing — the caravel and its rig read as a system, the navigation instruments (the astrolabe, the cross-staff, the log-line and traverse-board, the roteiro), and the open-ocean horizon and the Sargasso weed-lines [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 36] [POPULATE→T0_Theme_Registry].
material_palette and style_register — realistic-ethnographic for the Portuguese maritime world (the caravel timber and canvas, the brass instruments, the chart-vellum and the knotted log-line); the open blue-water palette of calm and swell and storm; no mythologically-stylized element beyond the perceivable vril-field [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 36].
music_mood — the Atlantic register (the sea-shanty and the piloto-practice song at reference, referenced-as-form, and the wind and rigging and the great silence of the horse latitudes) held in the vigil's quiet-and-gathering key, rising to the storm and settling toward the deepening field; theme_refs the water-where-no-one-watches and the crossing-made-perceptible motifs [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 36] [POPULATE→T0_Theme_Registry].
voice_and_crowd — the sailors' working registers and the ship-master's craft-teaching, the healer's child's steadying register, and the sparse ambient of a small crew on a long passage; per-NPC registers deferred to the Voice registry [SRC: T99_Story_Spine_Build_Logic # 9.6] [POPULATE→T0_Voice_Registry].
sfx_substrate — the open-ocean and calm and storm terrain enum, the wind-and-rigging and weather and Sargasso environmental ambient, the vril-cast tier for the carried schools and the deepening field-boundary, and the navigation-perception activation (the currents read at the PHILOSOPHUS register through the Trade-10 field-mechanics) [SRC: T99_Story_Spine_Build_Logic # 9.6] [POPULATE→T0_SFX_Registry].
fragment carrier and sacred objects — the INSC_77H_CH36_FRAGMENT physical carrier is a Layer-2 fragment of the 77-Hidden-Inscription spine that assembles across the arc and pays off at Ch 76 (surfaced here through the deepening-field perception at CH36_B07); sacred_objects_and_props include the reckoning instruments and the roteiro and the charted convergence-approach (the load-bearing recovered-record objects), referenced not reproduced [SRC: T0_Inscription_Spine @ INSC_77H_CH36_FRAGMENT].
Mechanical anchors
dominant_combat_mode environmental (the navigation-perception and storm-passage against the ocean's convergence system — the environmental-boss protocol; there is no person to fight, the sea the whole opponent) — mode-variety note: Ch 34 direct, Ch 35 stealth, Ch 36 environmental, so no two consecutive share a mode and the five-window Ch 32-36 (environmental, stealth, direct, stealth, environmental) carries three distinct dominant modes (environmental, stealth, direct), clearing HL_0049 (no consecutive repeat: Ch 35 stealth to Ch 36 environmental) and HL_0048 (≥3 distinct); intensity valley — CH_36 is a deliberate valley node, a relief in FEELING and never in enum (the reserved relief enum-set is exactly Ch 27, Ch 52 and Ch 57 under HL_0050 and CH_36 is not in it), sitting between the Ch 35 heist-and-moral-weight and the Ch 38 midpoint peak and holding HL_0048's no-three-consecutive-valleys rule (Ch 35 standard, Ch 36 valley, Ch 37 standard, Ch 38 peak — one valley in the window; corrected 2026-07-10 living-source: Ch 37 is standard per Chapter_Index, not valley). RECONCILIATION, from the arc-wide spine-registry intensity and mode mirror sweep of 2026-07-27 — the live T0_Chapter_Index CH_36 intensity cell read standard against four independent spine witnesses reading valley — this line, this entry's Decisions row on the valley placement, CH_37's Mechanical-anchors line ("between the Ch 36 valley and the Ch 38 midpoint peak") and CH_37's own Decisions correction row — so the cell was reconciled standard to valley under the mirror-class principle, the authored spine governing. Gate effect computed before applying: the three-node windows touching Ch 36 read standard-standard-valley, standard-valley-standard and valley-standard-peak, so R3 gains no valley run and loses no peak run; the mode column is untouched so R1 and R2 are unmoved; the HL_0050 relief set is unchanged so R5 is unmoved. The topography gate was re-run read-only after the flip and returns PASS. The five Pillar-1.12 beats are all present — combat (the storm-passage, the convergence current, the environmental boss), puzzle (the current-reading and dead-reckoning, the volta do mar solved as a system, the storm read at double tempo), learning (the sailor's knowledge, the reckoning instruments, the Trade-10 Navigation plateau), character (the Portuguese crew's teaching, the found-family let be people in the quiet, the healer's child journalling the crossing), and transformation (the relief of the surveillance-gap and the vigil-gathering, and the Navigation mastery-plateau where the sea's reading becomes a perception) — mode_variety_check flipped at scatter from puzzle=N;character=N;transformation=N to combat=Y;puzzle=Y;learning=Y;character=Y;transformation=Y, retiring the CH_36 R4 topography waiver [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_36] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0049] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0048].
main_boss_win_condition perceive (a navigation exam, the budget-cheap staircase beat 1/3 toward the Ch 38 capstone; no purgation, no person; perceive primary, attune secondary), typed at BE_0036 with phases P1→CH36_B03 and P2→CH36_B06 [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0036]; agility_course an open-deck-and-rigging storm traverse (the deck run, the rigging climb, the storm-timed passage) — biome-rotated against Ch 35's port-and-rooftop heist and Ch 37's convergence-approach vigil, with a Puzzle variant threading the current-reckoning, one course per chapter across three variants (HL_0079) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0079].
abilities_unlocked none rowed canonical for Ch 36 in the Ability Tree; the chapter's capability register is the Trade-10 Navigation field-mechanics at the ancient-and-medieval mastery plateau (the navigation-perception that runs together with the inscription); mastery_tier note — the protagonist's INSCRIPTION capability holds the Adeptus-Minor onset from Ch 15 (per-capability per HL_0026), and her Trade-10 Navigation reaches its documented ancient-world plateau here (a per-capability mastery advance, not a global tier), monotonic across the window and framed as the continued reclamation of a dormant elven birthright [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0026] [SRC: T0_Trade_Registry @ TRADE_10].
vril_sites none rowed canonical for Ch 36; the Atlantic-vril-field-boundary is the substrate surface (Thread 1/8), the offshore intensification deepening out where no land dilutes it toward the Ch 38 Azores midpoint, engaged through the perception mechanic (the CH36_B07 write to ws.atmospheric_vril_density_modifier) and referenced not reproduced [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 36] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0016].
scripts: none new; the Thread-1/Thread-18 content is the residual-vril-signature and the Trade-10 Navigation reckoning, read through the navigation-perception field-mechanic (not a writing-system), with no new script debuting [SRC: T1_Languages_and_Script_Master].

schools: no new school debuts; SCH_001 through SCH_008 carried (the SCH_008 WAYFIND resonant with the ocean-wayfinding) [SRC: T0_School_Registry @ SCH_008].
weapons roster-availability carried (the seamanship kit suited to the environmental mode); chapter_anchored_weapon_add none — not a canonical weapon-anchor chapter (the four adds fall at Ch 9-10 / 29 / 47-48 / 57) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0056].
trades: no new home base roots here; Trade 10 Navigation reaches its documented ancient-and-medieval mastery plateau (a capability advance, not a new home — Trade 10's homes are elsewhere), and the earlier trade homes and the carried schools hold [SRC: T0_Trade_Registry @ TRADE_10].
familiars: no new bond this chapter, but Kasa (W5, the green sea-turtle bonded at Ch 8) REAPPEARS here for the open-ocean crossing per her canonical Ch 36-37 Atlantic range, her latitude-sensing and weather-and-current route-optimization the living resonance of this chapter's Trade-10 Navigation plateau (and the Ch 38 Azores planetary-carrier setup); the carried roster holds — Shell (W1) sustained (a freshwater Flores softshell, present but out of its element on the deep sea, so Kasa and not Shell is the ocean-traveler here), the Nile Crocodile (W2), the Simurgh (F4), the Koi (W3, its evolution continuing), Taki (G4), Berkut (F5), the Raven (F6, the Huginn-Muninn pair), and the Reindeer (G6, the Sámi-tradition bond and cross-chapter memory-bridge) carried, Paravani the peacock (F2) ranging, the Sanur Octopus (W4) deferred and gated, the Child Familiar still lost [SRC: T3_Familiars_Named]; companions_and_recurring_npcs CHAR_0002 the healer's child (CHAR_0017 Ana departed after Rome, her next node Ch 41; CHAR_0056 Nakhoda Binti Hassan accounted-for but not aboard, her node Ch 38 if ally-status) [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0002] [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0056].

rewards per-quest reward map authored in-intent — the Trade-10 Navigation mastery-plateau and the volta do mar, the storm-passage seamanship, the surveillance-gap intelligence (the enemy infrastructural and bounded), the deepening-field read toward Ch 38, and the vigil-gathering carried forward; loot and seed anchors deferred [POPULATE→T0_RNG_Drop_Table] [POPULATE→T0_Quest_Seed_Registry].

Decisions surfaced
Ch 36 surfaced these decisions; the grounded and creative-within-vision ones are resolved inline with reasoning shown (Josh-override-able at RR-42), and no cardinal un-decidable is left open.
The surveillance-gap as presence-as-limit, never full absence (the D-01 discipline) — RESOLVED: the open-ocean no-antagonist-presence (NW_0034, VRIL_STANDALONE) is authored as a Thread-3 presence-as-limit negative-anchor — the already-established institutional enemy shown to be infrastructural and bounded (needing ports and ledgers it cannot plant at sea), a structural limit felt as relief — and is held distinct from the singular Ch 57 antagonist-free cultural sanctuary that the CVD reserves as the only full-absence chapter (per D-01, the era-scoped reading); the reveal stays within the D-14 ceiling, the five components dark [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043] [SRC: T0_Antagonist_Network_Registry @ NW_0034].
The role-title environmental boss (no person invented) — RESOLVED (per the boss roster and §17.1): the main boss is the ocean's own convergence current, a role-title (the Volta-do-Mar Reckoning) and never a personal name, because a no-presence chapter takes a role/title and inventing a person here would fabricate canon; the environmental-boss protocol is the playable layer (the current-reading and storm-passage), win by perceive, a real seamanship challenge without a person to fight [SRC: NAMING_METHOD] [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0036].
The intensity valley placement (HL_0048 topography) — RESOLVED-WITHIN-VISION: Ch 36 is a deliberate valley (relief) node between the Ch 35 moral-weight and the Ch 38 midpoint peak; the living-source correction of 2026-07-10 has Ch 37 standard (not valley), so the window carries one valley and holds HL_0048's no-three-consecutive-valleys rule (Ch 35 standard, Ch 36 valley, Ch 37 standard, Ch 38 peak) [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_36] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0048].
The staircase-beat numbering — RESOLVED-WITHIN-VISION (per the boss roster): Ch 36 is staircase beat 1/3 toward the Ch 38 Azores capstone (Ch 37 is 2/3, Ch 38 the 3/3 midpoint), a budget-cheap environmental exam that charts the convergence approach; the task-brief "beat 2/3" is corrected to the roster's 1/3 (Ch 36 first, Ch 37 second) [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0036].
Kasa (W5) the ocean-traveler familiar — RESOLVED (canonical roster fidelity): Kasa, the green sea-turtle bonded at Ch 8, canonically REAPPEARS at Ch 36-37 for the Atlantic crossing (T3_Familiars_Named W5, sea-turtle trans-oceanic range), and her latitude-sensing and weather-and-current route-optimization are the living resonance of this chapter's Trade-10 Navigation plateau and set up the Ch 38 Azores planetary-carrier; foregrounded here, with Shell (W1, a freshwater Flores softshell) corrected off the "most at home on the open ocean" claim (Shell is present but out of its element on the deep sea) — flag the same Shell-on-the-open-sea phrasing at Ch 33/35 for RR-42 softening [SRC: T3_Familiars_Named].
The Portuguese caravel moral complexity (Principle 3 historical honesty) — RESOLVED: the mid-fifteenth-century Portuguese Atlantic caravel and the volta-do-mar enterprise are NOT laundered into innocence — the same kind of ship on the same route is the maritime enterprise that opened the transatlantic slave trade the protagonist has just fled across Ch 34-35, so the body prose holds both the beauty of the sailors' knowledge and the use it was put to (the crew ordinary men and not villains, the enterprise not clean), never thinning the moral weight into "just people on a boat"; the navigation science stays credited as its own achievement (Frame-A) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 36] [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 5.1].
The Thread-11 grid conflict — FLAGGED FOR RR-42: the T0_Thread_Grid / enrich pack Ch-36 Thread-11 row reads "Atlantic trickster traditions" (thematically correct for Thread 11 Trickster, used here), but the T1_Threads_22 master Ch-36 grid line assigns Thread 11 to a journal-synthesis Portuguese-scholar-network cross-reference (a content mismatch); flagged for living-source reconciliation at RR-42, per the CLAUDE.md 104-cell Thread_Grid cross-bleed note [SRC: T0_Thread_Grid @ THREAD_11].
The v3 typing of the Thread-3 surveillance-gap anchor — RESOLVED (v3 conversion, 2026-07-15; Josh-override-able at any RR): the no-operational-presence is typed as THREAD_03 ANCHOR with a carrier beat (CH36_B01) that binds antagonist:NW_0034 and writes ws.antagonist_operational_state_per_region: mid_atlantic_surveillance_gap_no_presence — the no-presence scored AS presence (the D-01 category the CVD reasons from), neither NOT_PRESENT nor an operative invention; presence-as-limit, never the Ch 57 full-absence sanctuary. NW_0034's registry row already reads "No antagonist family operational presence" so the join is exact, no correction needed [SRC: T0_Antagonist_Network_Registry @ NW_0034] [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 3].
The v3 typing of the vigil-use fork — RESOLVED (v3 conversion, 2026-07-15): the v2.5 "Climax and branch beats" named truly_good / good_enough / neutral / evil as branch labels; v3.1 keys FORK_CH36_A by action with a direction (generative / neutral / corrosive), a low-magnitude ACCUMULATIVE exploration_interaction anchored at CH36_B08, with the durable write a found-family relationship texture (whether the breath was shared or spent) carried on the relationship columns — there is no named downstream reader, so no mark forward-track is fabricated; the texture bands are the DERIVED axis (§18), preserving the v2.5 low-magnitude integrity delta in one authored place [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 5.1].
The Ch-36 boss registry FK join — RESOLVED-APPLIED (grounded verification at the v3 conversion): the v3 FK join confirmed BE_0036 and BE_0036_S1/S2/S3 against BOSS_PERSONAS and both spine versions — verbs (perceive/attune; the S-row splits), axis (20/40/40 main; 30/40/30, 40/40/20, 40/40/20 subs), phase→beat map, and thread tags all agree with the registry rows as they stand; no registry cell drifted, so no correction is queued [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0036] [SRC: T0_Boss_Encounter_Registry @ BE_0036].
The good_enough fold at FORK_CH36_A (batch-4 verify traceability) — RESOLVED-recorded: the v2.5 climax prose named four bands including good_enough ("holds course"); the v3 fork types three action options with good_enough folding into the neutral hold-course row, matching the v2.5 Mechanical anchors' own pre-existing three-way split — a fold, not a dropped branch [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 3.2].
