The first land the crossing gives her is an island under a mountain that the people who live there call Echeyde, and she knows the shape of what is happening on its shore before she is close enough to name it. There is a cove on the leeward side where the wind drops, and in the cove there are pens, and in the pens there are people, and the whole clean logistics of it — the coffle-chain, the loading davits, the ledger open on a barrel-head — is run by a Castilian captain who calls himself the Good Shepherd. He is charming and he goes to Mass and he is entirely certain that the highlanders he chains are souls he is saving by the chaining, and he is the ugliest thing she has met on the whole Atlantic edge precisely because he is so sure he is kind. The people in his pens are the Guanche, and she came to this island already half in love with them, because their language is the Tifinagh she learned in the desert carried across the sea from the Amazigh mainland by their own ancestors, and because the first thing she heard on the wind, before she heard the pens, was someone whistling — a whole language whistled across a ravine, La Gomera's Silbo, a people who taught the wind to carry their words where their feet could not go.
So she climbs to the highland villages the captain raids, and she learns them before she fights for them. They keep goats along the barranco walls and grind their toasted gofio and fire their gánigo pots; they read the year off the sun where it falls through a hole in the rock at Risco Caído, an astronomy they built themselves in the volcanic stone and no one taught them; they lay their dead in the caves, dried and wrapped and kept, a mummification they worked out in their own climate with their own hands, the same human refusal to let the beloved rot, arrived at twice by two peoples who never met. And they tell her, when she has earned the telling, the oldest story on the island: that long before Achamán set the world in order the sea rose and swallowed the coasts, and the ancestors climbed to the mountain refuges and lived, and came down after to re-inhabit the drowned shore. She has heard this story in thirty forms across the world and it undoes her every time, and here it undoes her more, because these are the people it happened to and they are about to be nearly unmade again — not by water this time, by a man with a ledger and a crucifix.
She cannot save the Guanche as a people; history has already decided that, and she will not pretend to herself that a cliff-storm reverses a conquest. What she can do is break this cove, free these captives, and refuse the captain his certainty. So she storms the barranco under his crossbowmen's fire, and the cove learns her — the volleys track where she climbed last, the arena teaching her his rhythm before he throws a blow — and she wrecks the slaver works and empties the pens and meets him on the strand, where he fights in the same cadence his bowmen used, and she breaks him. She does not have to kill him to win; the win is the emptied coffle, and the Good Shepherd on his knees learning that the people he priced could climb. There is a Guanche among the raiders, a highlander pressed into guiding them with his family held as the price, and him she does not fight at all — she frees him and turns him, and he leads her up the cove's own paths to the thing the chapter is really about.
Because the captain is broke. He bought his captaincy on credit and means to repay it in bodies, and when she cracks his crown-financing ledger she finds that the money behind a bankrupt hidalgo runs up — up through the Castilian crown's advisory networks, up out of the cove and into the same kind of made silence she met above the port-handler at the last landfall, a financing built on these people being sold that stays, itself, unnamed and unreachable. The trail goes up, not down. She cannot follow it any higher than she could follow it before; she only confirms, coldly, that the reach of it extends even into a slaver's cove on a conquered island, and that she still cannot see the top. She logs what the ledger gives, seeds the freed captives' testimony toward the next harbor up the chain, and takes ship again — carrying the Guanche's flood-story and their whistled words and their own quiet astronomy, and the harder knowledge that some of the things she witnesses she is too late to prevent and can only refuse to let be forgotten.
