Body prose
She comes down the Atlantic coast and makes landfall on a peninsula that holds, at its two ends, the best and the worst of what she has been learning to see. In the green north there is a cave, sealed now against its own visitors so that its breath will not fade what its painters made, and inside it — she is permitted to know it, if not to touch it — a serpentine form coils across the rock in ochre, among the oldest such images known, drawn by a hand fourteen thousand years and more before hers. It undoes her a little. Everything she has traced across thirty regions, every serpent on every drum and pillar and page, runs back through the San rock-art of the Rift and the Drakensberg to this: a shape a Paleolithic painter set down in the dark, so long ago that it makes the pharaohs recent. The serpent-thread she has followed since the first region closes here, at its deepest root — the oldest form in her whole climb — and she stands in the cool of the cave and feels the size of the human record she has spent her life defending.
And the painted cave has a deeper mouth than its gallery. Where the ochre serpent above is a thing she may only look at — the record honored, sealed against its own breath — the rock beneath it opens, through one of the chapter's time-windows, across the western mountains and into a domain the Basque have always known was down there — the painted gallery is Cantabrian, but the deep earth it lets onto is the neighboring Basque country's own: the deep earth of Mari, lady of the mountain and the cavern, whom the people of this unconquered tongue have honored as long as they have spoken it. Mari meets her at the threshold, not as a thing to fight but as the patron of the place, and names what has risen into her dark — the Herensuge, the seven-headed dragon the Basque have sent their own heroes down to face since before Rome had a word for these mountains. It is fair game and it is hers to answer, and the answer is a real fight: seven heads striking across the cavern-galleries, each to be broken or severed while Mari's deep earth holds the ground steady beneath the battle. And though she has never seen these scales — grey Pyrenean stone and cave-damp, seven heads where the warm seas held one — the coil lands in her the way a familiar thing does: a cold coiling hunger she feels she has met in warmer water and will meet again in other seas, wearing other scales, here simply wearing Basque ones. On the wooded approach one broader shape may cross her once and let her pass or bar the way — the Basajaun, lord of the wild wood, a guardian more than a monster — and then the descent is hers. The painted serpent above and the fought serpent below are the one thread said twice: the deepest root perceived, and the recurring coil answered blade in hand.
And then she goes south, and finds the other thing. In Córdoba there is — there was, there will be, the time-windows fold it — a library, four hundred thousand volumes deep, built across centuries by Muslims and Jews and Christians who argued and translated and copied side by side, the single brightest room the West had yet made. She walks it while it stands, and it is the most hopeful place she has been: a whole civilization founded on the conviction that knowing more is better than knowing less, that a Greek text is worth saving in Arabic and rendering into Latin, that three faiths can share a city. She sits with scholars who read Jesus three ways at the same table — the risen Lord, the prophet Isa, the teacher of Nazareth — and none of them has to be wrong for the others to be right, and no one at that table is her enemy. And then she watches, in another fold of time, a man with a torch and a certainty decide that a book he cannot read is a book that should not exist, and the brightest room in the West goes up in smoke by the cartload. She does not fight the faith he claims to serve; his faith is not the crime, and the scholars burning beside their books hold the same faith he does. She fights the burning — the apparatus of it, the men with the torches — and she saves what pages she can, and she carries out of that fire the coldest lesson the chapter has: that the surest way to unmake a people is not to kill them but to burn what they knew, and that this is done, in the world, with a torch as readily as with a ledger or a locked sea.
Because the sea is locked too. At the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean between the two Pillars, a Carthaginian admiral has made the ocean a secret. He holds the sailing-knowledge of the waters beyond the Pillars by force and by silence, on the plainest of convictions: that to control what people are allowed to know is to control them. He is proud and disciplined and genuinely believes his hoarding keeps his city safe. She cannot out-hoard him; she has to out-think him, and then out-fight him, and the fight is a fleet action — breaking his line at the Strait, taking his flagship deck by deck, until the sea-charts he has kept from the world are hers to open. And under all three — the sealed cave, the burned library, the locked sea — there is one Iberian keeper she does not fight at all: a Basque, of the tongue no conqueror ever managed to read, whose unreadable language guards a vault the way the cave guards its serpent. She meets him and cannot decode him, and it is the second time in her whole climb that her inscription runs into a wall it simply cannot open — the first was a dead script, and this is a living tongue, and both teach her the same humility: that some knowledge is kept not by hoarding but by being, quietly and unbrokenly, itself.
What kind of person she is decides what she does with the recovered record. She can open the admiral's charts to every port and give the burned library's saved pages to the scholars who can copy them, spending herself to put knowledge back into the world at cost to her cover. She can take what she needs and keep an edge. She can save what is easy and sail on. Or she can look at the locked sea and the burned books and understand, coldly, that a monopoly on knowing is the most durable power there is, and file that away for her own use. The peninsula will let her do any of it. But the Simurgh is overhead, the bird the Sufi poets made the image of a soul that seeks and finds, and she has begun to suspect that a person who would burn a library is a person who has stopped seeking. When the charts are open or hoarded and the pages are saved or lost, she takes ship across the Strait — the locked sea now merely a sea — toward the desert and the veiled traders of the south.
