Chapter 27 — Central Europe: The Knight Who Duels the Doorway, the Cathedral Over the Spring, and the Breather

Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build, spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the enrich.py pack and the BOSS_PERSONAS relief-valley protocol. Standard-care chapter (CVD §6.2); the §17.1 universal cultural hard lines bind, and the traditions depicted — the Gothic-cathedral and stonemason-guild craft, the Teutonic knightly and Liechtenauer fencing tradition, the Hermetic and Hildegardian medieval learning, and the pre-Christian sacred-site substrate beneath the churches — are represented with weight and as the traditions understood themselves. This is the arc's relief valley: a formal, low-stakes fechtbuch duel with a genuinely honorable knight, not a monster. The Teutonic knight Konrad is an unwitting institutional beneficiary, never a vessel and never ideologically aligned; the honorable and the faithful are honored, never villainized, and no anti-Christian polemic is authored. Reveal-timing note — the player is never given the House-of-Velheim name, the family pattern, or the awareness-tier taxonomy here; the architectural-suppression-via-conversion is felt as a method and surfaces only through the decode mechanic, never as a named apparatus, and the design-layer continuity stays felt and never named. Drafted is not canonical.

Continuity anchor (SSBL §9.3 — Ch 27 start state = Ch 26 end state)

Ch 27 opens from Ch 26's committed end state [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_26]: the protagonist an adolescent, her inscription at Adeptus Minor, carrying from the Carpathians the first deploy of the surgical purge and the memory of saving a good man; the healer's child (CHAR_0002) traveling as the active primary human companion and journal-keeper; Shell (W1) the sustained-bond Water familiar always present, the Nile Crocodile (W2) carried, the Simurgh (F4) carried, the Koi (W3) carrying its Koi-to-Dragon evolution, Taki (G4, the wild horse), Berkut (F5, the golden eagle), and the Raven (F6, evolving toward the Huginn-Muninn pair) carried, with Paravani the peacock (F2) ranging the passage, the Sanur Octopus (W4) carried deferred and gated, and the Child Familiar still lost and believed dead; the Trade 1 (Ouidah), Trade 2 (Iranian plateau), Trade 3 and Trade 4 (South India), Trade 5 (Persia), Trade 6 Tailoring (China), Trade 9 Inscription (Egypt), and Trade 10 (Swahili Coast) home bases carried; the Crown device force-bound; concealment at CONCEALMENT_WITH_HOSTILE_RECOGNITION; the Ch 8 Sealed Letter still an uncracked fairy-script mystery bound toward its Ch 66 close; the SCH_005 Eleusinian katabasis and SCH_006 Druidic attunement carried, the purge verb newly deployed, and the institutional-erasure unease (the still-open Library-of-Alexandria thread) carried; the found-family accreted across the arc; and the antagonist pattern still entirely unseen by the player [SRC: T3_Core_Characters # The Healer's Child] [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0002]. What changes here is a breath and a reunion: after the horror of the Carpathians she comes into a country of cathedrals and finds, for once, an adversary who is not corrupt or possessed or hoarding — a genuinely honorable knight who fights by the book and coaches her when she loses — and beneath the beautiful stone he guards so sincerely, a live spring buried on purpose so that a people would forget what stood there before the church; and here Ana, the caci-fighter who taught her to hold a whip and a shield in the islands a lifetime ago, comes back to her side as the road bends toward the Mediterranean, the party's blade where the protagonist is its eyes.

Body prose

The German lands are the first easy country she has crossed in a long time, and she lets herself feel it. She lets Ntala tease her, too, which Ntala does with a straight face and no mercy: that for someone who can read the oldest writing in the world, her own hand is a fright, and the journal has lasted this long mostly because she is not allowed to touch a page of it. The horror of the Carpathians drops behind her, the forest opens into ordered fields and river-towns and the great grey ships of stone the people here raise to their god, and for a whole chapter nothing is trying to erase or hoard or possess anyone. What she finds instead is a knight — a Teutonic lay-brother, a fencer of the Liechtenauer school, sworn to guard the cathedral and its ground, and he is, of all the things she has met, simply good. He duels her the way a master teaches: by the book, pass by pass, naming her habits back to her, answering her favorite guard with its textbook counter, and when she loses he tells her what she did wrong and invites her to come again. There is no venom in him anywhere. He believes, with his whole honest heart, that he is protecting holy ground.

And he is wrong, and does not know it, and that is the quiet ache under the whole bright chapter. The cathedral he guards was raised over a pre-Christian sacred site — which is ordinary history, churches stood on the old high places everywhere — but this one was raised for a reason he was never told: to bury a living spring, a real concentration of the substrate she has spent her life reclaiming, under so much sanctified stone that the people would forget, within a few generations, that anything had ever welled up here at all. It is the convert-don't-destroy stratagem made architecture: do not smash the old holy place and make a martyr of it, build over it, consecrate it, let the memory silt up under the flagstones. And it has worked exactly as designed. The knight protects the lid of a well he doesn't know is a well. She has felt this shape before — the wish to make a people forget — though it wears a new face here, in stone rather than in fire or ration or edict, and she does not name it; she only recognizes the method, the way a traveler recognizes a road she has walked before.

So the chapter is a decode wrapped in a duel. She fights Konrad for the pleasure and the teaching of it — a formal, low-stakes contest that costs no one anything, resolved by a yield and not a death — and while she does, she reads the building itself. The stonemasons who raised it left marks in the stone, guild-signs cut where the courses meet, and she has enough inscription now to see that the marks are not only masons' signatures but a cipher: the guild preserved, in the very geometry of the suppression, the sacred proportion of the site they were burying, so that whoever could read the stone could find the spring again. She un-riddles the guild-warden who fights to keep the secret, faces a construct of "sanctified" flagstone raised to refute her, and follows a nun's warning — a riddle in the language of viriditas, the greening-life-force of Hildegard's visions, which is the same substrate under a Rhineland name — down beneath the choir to the buried water. And she roots something of her own here: this is where the engineering trade gives her its ancient home, the craft of raising and reading structure, the masons teaching her that a building is an argument in stone and can be made to remember or forget on purpose.

What she does with the spring is the chapter's small, real choice. She can open it — break the seal of stone and let the site breathe again, restoring to the people a memory that was taken from them, at some cost to the peace of the place and to a good knight's certainty. She can note it and leave it sealed, taking the knowledge and not the risk. She can use it quietly for herself. Or she can do the cold thing and help it stay buried, which would make her, for the first time, a mason of forgetting. Konrad is never her enemy in any of it; his goodness is real and his error is not his fault, and if she is wise she leaves him his honor even as she opens what he guards. When the duel is yielded and the spring is decided and the Hermetic doors have swung open on the learning beneath the church, she takes the southern road up over the mountains, down toward the old capital of the world and a dinner she has not yet been invited to.

Threads advancing

Mirrored to the canonical Thread grid (the per-thread rows below, keyed THREAD_NN) and the per-chapter blocks of T1_Threads_22 (canonical-22 names, verified against the grid, never inferred); the event-backed threads carry a named beat in §10, the chapter-ambient thread carries the thread-join note under the mode-variety fold [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_27].

Civilizational marks (the builders-of-knowledge layer, §9.5 mandatory)

Each mark clears a group-A significance lens and anchors to the RCM verified-canon paragraph or a named primary source; medieval Central Europe is authored as a civilization of engineers, fencers, and scholars, never a dark-ages backdrop [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Everything-woven (the twelve facets, each a real presence, none name-checked)

Central Europe is authored as a hub in its documented web — the Byzantine and Islamic learning arriving through the Toledo School and the trade routes, the Slavic world to the east (the Ch 26 root), Rome and Italy to the south (the Ch 28 turn), and the broader Latin Christendom — never an isolated locale; the relational edges are woven through the facets, controlled for relevance at the significance-lens pass [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].

Key sites and spatial layout

Story-load-bearing sites, each having cleared a significance lens and the §4 relevance filter; geography anchors to the World Geography Master, never the RCM [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 27] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Typed v3.1 site rows (§3b) — beats reference these by site_id; the environmental detail rides each row as env texture.

Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)

Two combat sub-bosses across different threads and one ally-mystery figure feed the relief-valley main duel, the arc's breather; the fight is a formal fechtbuch contest blended with a guild-mark decode, never a single mode and never a kill (HL_0078) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0078] [SRC: T1_Combat_System_Spec].

Protected-chapter combat framing (ruling 5)

The honorable knight Konrad, the honest stonemasons, the nun of the viriditas tradition, and the living communities and faithful of the German lands are inviolate: Konrad is a chivalrous adversary never killed (the duel resolves by a formal yield), the honest masons are never targets, the nun is honored and never fought, and the Church and the faithful are never villainized (HL_0003; the suppression architecture and its constructs are the combat layer, HL_0004) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0004]. Combat routes only through the formal fechtbuch duel (a yield, not a kill), the guild-defense apparatus (the Guild-Warden), and the reliquary-construct — never the knight killed, the masons, the nun, or the faithful. The convert-don't-destroy history is authored as documented policy, not an anti-Christian polemic; St. Hildegard of Bingen is honored as the visionary-scholar she was and never depicted as a combatant, and the cathedral and reliquary are referenced, not reproduced or desecrated (HL_0007) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0005] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0007].
