Chapter 26 — Eastern Europe: The Volkhv Who Reached Too Far, the Possession on the Vril, and the First Purge

Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build, spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the enrich.py pack. Standard-care chapter (CVD §6.2); the §17.1 universal cultural hard lines bind, and the traditions depicted — the pre-Christian Slavic and Carpathian folk cosmology (the volkhv seer-priesthood, the Perun-Veles dualism, the Yarilo dying-rising cycle, the Mokosh mother-goddess, and the strigoi and rusalka folklore) — are represented with weight and as the traditions understood themselves. Two protections bind this chapter together: the possessed volkhv Radomil is a good man and a victim, saved not defeated (§17.1, HL_0003), and the missionary-era erasure is authored as a specific operation and its agent whose crime is against memory — never Christianity or the missionaries as a people villainized (the Ch 8 / Ch 18 / Ch 19 handling). Reveal-timing note — the player is never given the House-of-Velheim name, the family pattern, or the awareness-tier taxonomy here; the erasure-operators are exposed piecewise as deplorables, the possession surfaces as folk-horror and never as a named apparatus, and the design-layer continuity stays felt and never named. Drafted is not canonical.

Continuity anchor (SSBL §9.3 — Ch 26 start state = Ch 25 end state)

Ch 26 opens from Ch 25's committed end state [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_25]: the protagonist an adolescent, her inscription at Adeptus Minor, carrying from Anatolia the lesson that the making of the world was always a shared human birthright, never any one hand's to hoard; the healer's child (CHAR_0002) traveling as the active primary human companion and journal-keeper; Shell (W1) the sustained-bond Water familiar always present, the Nile Crocodile (W2) carried, the Simurgh (F4) carried, the Koi (W3) carrying its Koi-to-Dragon evolution, Taki (G4, the wild horse), Berkut (F5, the golden eagle), and the Raven (F6, evolving toward the Huginn-Muninn pair) carried, with Paravani the peacock (F2) ranging the passage, the Sanur Octopus (W4) carried deferred and gated, and the Child Familiar still lost and believed dead; the Trade 1 (Ouidah), Trade 2 (Iranian plateau), Trade 3 and Trade 4 (South India), Trade 5 (Persia), Trade 6 Tailoring (China), Trade 9 Inscription (Egypt), and Trade 10 (Swahili Coast) home bases carried; the Crown device force-bound; concealment at CONCEALMENT_WITH_HOSTILE_RECOGNITION; the Ch 8 Sealed Letter still an uncracked fairy-script mystery bound toward its Ch 66 close; the SCH_005 Eleusinian katabasis and SCH_006 Druidic attunement carried and the Library-of-Alexandria thread still open toward Ch 27; the found-family accreted across the arc; and the antagonist pattern still entirely unseen by the player [SRC: T3_Core_Characters # The Healer's Child] [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0002]. What changes here is that she meets, for the first time, an antagonist she must not defeat but save — a good man possessed while trying to shield his people's memory — and she reaches, for the first time, for a new capability the whole rest of her journey will need: the surgical purge that separates a possession from the person it rides.

Body prose

The Carpathian forest is the first place that is actively afraid, and teaches her to be. After Anatolia's bright plateau the woods close over her like water, dense and old and full of a dread that is not superstition but perception — the forest is saturated with vital-force, layered with the traces of everyone who has lived and died in it, and it reads to her newly-opened sight as a single held breath. Somewhere in it a village is going wrong. People speak of a thing that walks at night and drinks the life out of the sleeping, of cattle found bloodless, of a leader beloved and now feared. And when she finds the truth of it, it breaks the pattern of everything she has done so far.

Because the monster is a good man. He is the last openly-practicing volkhv of his valley — a seer-priest of the old Slavic telling, a keeper of the Perun-and-Veles dual-register and the dying-and-rising Yarilo cycle, the Slavic brother of every true tradition-holder she has crossed the world meeting. And he is dying in the most terrible way: not killed, but taken. Men had come to his valley to convert it by erasing it — to baptize the people and burn the old telling, to leave a Christian village with no memory of what it had been — and he had reached too far into the Veles underworld register to hold his people's memory against them, and in reaching he left a seam open, and something on the far side of it came through. A negative-consciousness thing, what his tradition calls a strigoi, has taken the seam and is wearing him, and through him it is spreading down into his mounted kin, turning a protective clan-leader into a host that moves as one dark will. Every antagonist she has faced was a vessel to be beaten. This one is a victim to be saved, and if she fails, a good man dies and the last of his tradition dies with him and the erasure gets its clean, silent conversion.

She has to hold two truths at once, and the chapter will not let her drop either. The erasure operation is real and wrong — the book-and-torch men working the valley, converting by destroying memory, are the thing to fight, and she fights them; but the fight is against the operation and its agents, never against the faith they carry or the people who hold it, because the crime here is against memory, not against anyone's god. And the possessed volkhv is not the enemy at all. The horror that stalks the night village, the mounted host that answers a dark drum, the thing that lunges out of the dark with his face — all of it is Radomil, and all of it must be brought down without killing him. So she learns to do a new thing. She has spent her whole climb building the substrate up in herself; here, for the first time, she has to reach into someone else and cut a possession loose from the soul it rides, surgically, on the same vril that runs under everything — a purge. It is the first time she deploys it, and some part of her understands, without being told, that she will need it again, that this is the beginning of a capability the far end of her journey is built on.

She works toward the purge through the forest's own guardians and gates. She crosses a frozen ford where a rusalka rises — a drowned-water spirit, protective and not malicious, faced as the tradition frames her. She disarms and exposes the erasure operation's forward agent, the circuit-rider with his book and his torch. She un-riddles a death-hidden-outside-the-body ward, a Koschei-casket construct guarding the seam where the possession entered. And then she goes into the worst of it: the night stalk, the cavalry duel against the possessed leader and his multiplied riders, and the containment itself — separating the seam-rider first so the coordination cannot re-knit, then reaching into Radomil and cutting the thing loose. What kind of person she is decides how it ends. She can spend everything to save him — the hard, costly, uncertain purge that leaves the man alive and the tradition intact — or she can take the easy road and simply put the monster down, which would be a kill, and a good man's death, and the erasure's victory wearing her hand. The people are never her enemy. The old telling is worth a hard night. When it is done, and the man is breathing and himself and grieving what he nearly became, she takes the western road out of the mountains toward the ordered towns and cathedrals of the German lands.

Civilizational marks (the builders-of-knowledge layer, §9.5 mandatory)

Each mark clears a group-A significance lens and anchors to the RCM verified-canon paragraph or a named primary source; the Slavic and Carpathian peoples are authored as keepers of a sophisticated cosmology, an oral-memory science, and a documented folk-medicine, never a backdrop of peasant superstition [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Everything-woven (the twelve facets, each a real presence, none name-checked)

The Slavic-Carpathian region is authored as a hub in its documented web — the Black-Sea steppe and the Scythian world to the east, the Byzantine and missionary Christianity pressing from the south, Central Europe and the German lands to the west (the Ch 27 turn), and the broader Slavic world beyond — never an isolated valley; the relational edges are woven through the facets, controlled for relevance at the significance-lens pass [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].

Key sites and spatial layout

Story-load-bearing sites, each having cleared a significance lens and the §4 relevance filter; geography anchors to the World Geography Master, never the RCM [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 26] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Typed v3.1 site rows (§3b) — beats reference these by site_id; the environmental detail rides each row as env texture.

Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)

Three sub-bosses across different threads feed the victim-boss main encounter, canon's first save-the-person fight; every fight is blended, primary-and-secondary-verb, three-axis, with phase escalation that evolves the moveset (HL_0078), and a reward on win and on death per the T1_Combat failure-states rule [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0078].

Protected-chapter combat framing (ruling 5)

The possessed volkhv Radomil, his mounted kin taken by the coordination-possession, and the whole Carpathian community are inviolate: Radomil is a victim to be saved and never defeated, his kin are freed by the purge and never slaughtered, and the villagers are protected throughout (HL_0003; the possession-manifestation and the erasure operation are the combat layer, HL_0004) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0004]. Combat routes only through the strigoi possession-manifestation (contained, not killed on the person), the missionary-erasure operation and its agents (fought as the oppressor apparatus, never Christianity or the missionaries as a people, the crime against memory and never the faith), and the Koschei-casket construct — never the volkhv, his kin, or the community. The Slavic gods and spirits — Perun and Veles, Yarilo, Mokosh, the rusalka — are honored as the tradition held them, real and portrayable substrate, never trap-monsters; the strigoi is rendered as the tradition's own documented folk-belief (the Medveđa record), never a Hollywood-vampire horror-trope (HL_0005); the sacred groves are referenced, not reproduced (HL_0007) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0005] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0007].
