Body prose
As a child the protagonist comes down the length of a continent into the oldest country there is, and finds two clocks running at once. One is deep past all reckoning: at a cave above a cold sea, people were grinding ochre into a worked, stored, deliberate red a hundred thousand years ago, and scratching cross-hatched marks into it for no reason but meaning. The other clock is the one turning under her feet — a colony, a mine, a war, a set of laws written to sort people by the color of their skin. Standing between them, she learns the chapter's hard arithmetic: that the same land can hold the first proof a human mind ever reached for the symbolic, and the most industrial machine yet built for hollowing that mind out.
She does not walk it alone this time. The healer's child, who has followed her route unsigned since the marsh where they first met, steps forward here and simply stays. She signs the next note — the first she does not leave unsigned — Ntala, and begins to write. The journal that opens in that child's hand is small and plain and will outlive everything around it; it is where the things she cannot say aloud, and the things no one else will record, start being kept. For the first time the protagonist has a witness who is also a keeper, and the difference matters more than she can yet feel. The journal is the chapter's quiet center of gravity. Everything the mine would erase, the journal holds.
The rock art is where she learns to read the land as a text. In the high basalt amphitheatre of the Drakensberg, on six hundred sheltered panels, the /Xam painted the eland and the trance and the geometry that rises behind closed eyes — the entoptic patterns that come, the scholars found, from the architecture of seeing itself. She cannot read them the way a master will one day read them; she is early, Neophyte, and what she has is reverence, inscription-sense, and the patient half-light of an elder's teaching. A panel-guardian shows her the shape of the thing without handing her its depth. A shaman-elder she first met in the Rift Valley gives her, with the healer's child helping hold the thread, a partial deeper read of the serpentine forms — enough to feel a coordinate she cannot yet name, not enough to name it. The full reading waits for a tier she has not earned. What she takes now is that a wall can be a library, and that a tradition unbroken across tens of thousands of years does not ask permission to still be true.
Against all of that stands the man of the mountain. His name means exactly that — of the mountain — and he has made the sacred barrier of spears into a shaft and a share price. He is not a brute. He writes in his diary every night, in a clean hand, and what he writes is that he knows precisely what he is doing to the people and the land and the stone, and that he will do it again tomorrow. He is the most chilling thing she has met because he is not deceived. Where the forest machine at the Congo could not comprehend what it destroyed, this one comprehends and proceeds. Breaking his works is a real fight — machinery to wreck, an overseer to face, a cliff to climb — but the deeper stake is the evidence: when his own hard record falls into the journal, the loop closes, and for the first time the harm is not only survived but documented. That is the chapter's new power, and it belongs to the child.
Northward, on the leg that carries her toward the next chapter, she crosses into the interior and meets a second erasure, older and quieter than a diary. At Great Zimbabwe the Shona raised a city of mortarless stone, a bird carved in soapstone, a gold-and-ivory trade that reached the Swahili coast and the Indian Ocean beyond — and then, centuries on, men who could not bear that Africans had built it credited the ruins to Phoenicians, to Sheba, to anyone foreign. She sees the lie for what it is: not an error but a theft of authorship, the same hollowing worked on a whole people's memory instead of one man's mountain. The journal takes that down too. What the trade and the colony and the lie all try to erase, she is learning, they only scatter — and what is scattered, like ochre ground fine and stored against a hundred thousand years, keeps.
The paths turn on the evidence and the methods. On the generative path she documents to protect and subverts the apparatus from inside the trust she is given, leaving the communities their own authorship; on the corrosive path she learns how the extraction works and files the method away, the same hollowing she came to resist. She cannot yet say why the old red stone comforts her. Only that here, where the world's worst sorting is being written into law, something in her keeps insisting that nothing true is ever fully spent.
And then they leave. On the morning they go north the protagonist lifts off the small plain thing that fell out of the realm with them — their mother's once, given away at a birth and never taken back — and puts it into the healer's child's hands. There is no speech about it. The healer's child cannot read what it is and is not told; what they are told is to keep it on, and not to take it off. Then the two of them walk out toward the Zambezi with the journal in one pack and that small weight at a throat that never asked for it. The chapter does not close on the mine, or the stone, or the lie. It closes on a child handing away the only protection they have ever had, on purpose, to the person they cannot bear to lose — carrying, unspoken and unanswered, what they have always believed that same handing-away once cost.
