Chapter 12 — West Africa: Yoruba, Dahomey, Dogon, and Akan — the Ocean's Arithmetic, the Diviner Who Reads and Keeps, and the Forces That Ifa Was Made to Ward

Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (golden re-enrichment of the v2.4 build), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the enrich.py pack and the ENRICHMENT_PROPOSAL Ajogun/abiku/adze restoration. ELEVATED-care chapter (CVD §6.2) for the living Yoruba, Dahomey (Fon), Dogon, and Akan peoples and their traditions; the §17.1 hard lines bind, and every people is represented with weight and as they understand themselves — the Ile-Ife bronze-casters and Ifa diviners, the Fon Vodun priesthood and the Agojie, the Dogon Hogon and their cosmology, the Akan goldweight-masters — as builders of art, mathematics, statecraft, and knowledge, never a stereotyped descriptor. Their elders and specialists (Babalawo Adegoke, Priestess Senami, Anaï, Olabisi, Gbemehoun) and the Agojie and the sacred Ouidah python are inviolate and never targets. The golden re-enrichment restores the tradition's OWN condemned malevolent forces as a grounded supernatural layer warded by Ifa: the Ajogun (the two-hundred-plus malevolent powers led by Iku, Death, that wage war on human destiny), the abiku (the spirit-children born to die), and the Ewe-Fon adze (the blood-drinking predator-spirit) — warded and driven off through divination and sacrifice, never worshipped and never confused with the revered orisha. Combat still routes only through the Atlantic slave-trade apparatus and these condemned folklore forces, never the communities, the Agojie, or the sacred python. Reveal-timing note — Thread 3 is present as the trade's unintended-diaspora anchor, but the sovereign is UNAWARE and the family behind the institution is never shown to the player as a pattern; no House-of-Velheim name/family; the Grand Sage is dark. Drafted is not canonical.

Continuity anchor (SSBL §9.3 — Ch 12 start state = Ch 11 end state)

Ch 12 opens from Ch 11's committed end state [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_11]: the protagonist a child (Childhood stage; internal age 12); no traveling companion, the Baka and Mbuti teachers rooted to the forest behind her; Shell (W1) the sustained-bond Water familiar always present, with Kira, Khan, Muthu, Kasa, Msafiri, and Desta carried and Msafiri ranging the African inland chapters; the Child Familiar still lost and believed dead; the Trade 3 Blacksmithing and Trade 4 Herbalism home bases from Ch 7 and the Trade 10 Fishing and Navigation home base from Ch 8 carried, with the Animal-Communication substrate seeded at Ch 11 and now due its home base; concealment at CONCEALMENT_WITH_HOSTILE_RECOGNITION, LOW after the Congo respite; the healer's-child mystery active and the Ch 8 Sealed Letter still an uncracked cross-world-resonance mystery carried quietly toward its Ch 66 close; the paths near the L3 Neutral band; and the antagonist pattern still unseen by the player, though Ch 11 left her feeling, for the first time, that the hollowing has a limit [SRC: T3_Core_Characters # The Healer's Child]. Ch 12 restates that proof at the scale of an ocean and asks a harder question: what to make of a man who brokers the harm and cannot be killed into innocence.

Body prose

As a child the protagonist comes down out of the forest into a country of kings and cities, of bronze-casters and diviners and a coast where the Atlantic trade has planted its factories and drawn the kingdoms along it into the traffic in human lives. She walks first into Ile-Ife, where the smiths pour metal into wax and pull faces out of it so lifelike they seem about to speak, and she understands that she has crossed from the forest-that-is-a-mind into a civilization that writes its memory in bronze and in mathematics. Here a babalawo, an Ifa diviner of twenty years, casts the palm-nuts and the divining chain and reads her vital force without ever naming it aloud, holding her secret the way the diviner holds any true thing, in confidence and not in threat. It is the opposite of the hostile eyes she has learned to feel, and it steadies her.

And it is the babalawo who shows her that Ifa is not a decoration but a weapon. A household is losing child after child, and the elders name the grief for what the tradition knows it to be: an abiku, a spirit-child sworn to be born and die and be born again, feeding on a mother's mourning. In another town an affliction with no human cause presses on the living, and the diviner names that too — an Ajogun, one of the two-hundred-plus malevolent forces that wage constant war on human destiny, led by Iku who is Death himself. The protagonist, who has been hollowed and has come back and carries her own lost child like a wound, learns the craft the tradition made precisely to fight these things: to cast the sixteen palm-nuts into their two-hundred-and-fifty-six figures, to read from the figures which force is at work and what it is owed, and to perform the sacrifice and the binding that names it, satisfies it, and drives it off. The orisha are honored and the babalawo is her teacher; the Ajogun and the abiku and the blood-drinking adze the coast fears are the tradition's own condemned enemies, warded and never worshipped, and she stands at the diviner's shoulder against them the way she stood at the healer's in the forest.

At the coast at Ouidah she makes her first real home in a craft she has only touched before. In the temple where the pythons are fed and never feared, the priestess teaches her to hear an animal's intent as a discipline rather than an accident, and the Trade of speaking across species takes root in her. But the coast is also where the ocean's arithmetic is worked in daylight — a European slaving factory with its barracoon and its ledger, raiding the towns for captives and tallying human beings into cargo. Breaking the raid and the broker is a real fight, and a first-class one; they are the oppressor apparatus and she gives them no quarter.

Then she goes inland to Abomey, to the court of a Fon sovereign, and the question turns as sharp as it will ever be. The man who brokers the harm here is not a monster. He is a king, cultivated and grieving, who trades at his coast because refusal means his people's erasure, and who cannot be killed into innocence — and the state he runs conducts much of the raiding itself, a truth the chapter does not soften. She has been taken into these communities and trusted from inside, and so the choice the court forces on her is the hardest kind: to join the raiding from within the trust she was given, or to hold her cover and subvert it from the inside, protecting who she can while the mask stays on. Watching the Ahosu, she recognizes something of her own bargain, the small daily compromises of one who hides what she is to keep what she loves, and the exact place where a compromise stops protecting and starts consuming.

West of the Fon country she follows the gold roads into the Akan goldfields, where Olabisi, the Ile-Ife historian-crafter who first set a lost-wax bronze face in her hands, shows her a second literacy worked not in metal-as-portrait but in small cast brass. Here the goldweight masters read a whole science of measurement and proverb out of weights no larger than a thumb, tallying gold dust against figures and law in a metrology written without an alphabet, and she watches a people count their own wealth in their own exact and honest mathematics. It is the same coast's arithmetic turned inside out, she sees, for these are the very hands the trade would tally into cargo, counting instead in a wisdom entirely their own.

Farther still, up the Bandiagara cliffs, the Dogon Hogon keeps a cosmology of astonishing reach, and she engages the star-knowledge as encoded observation and honored tradition, held on its own terms. And underneath all of it runs the proof the forest first gave her, restated at a terrible volume: what the trade tries to erase it only scatters, and what is scattered takes root. The songs and the spirits and the divination boards do not die in the crossing. They cross too, and grow strange and alive on the far shore. She cannot say yet why that should comfort her; only that here, where the world's worst arithmetic is being worked in daylight, something in her keeps insisting that nothing true is ever fully spent, and the road bends south toward the next people.

Threads advancing (T0_Thread_Grid, 17 cells)

Civilizational marks (the builders-of-knowledge layer, §9.5 mandatory)

Each mark clears a group-A significance lens and anchors to the RCM verified-canon paragraph or a named primary source (Bascom; Abimbola; Bay; Herskovits; Griaule and van Beek; Garrard; Lovejoy) [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

The everything-woven layer (twelve facets, grounded)

The West African core is authored as a hub in its four-peoples-and-Atlantic web — the Yoruba forest cities, the Fon coast and court, the Dogon escarpment, the Akan goldfields, and the ocean trade that scatters what it cannot erase toward the Ch 42 Haiti and Ch 43 diaspora payoffs — never an isolated town [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].

Key sites and spatial layout

Story-load-bearing sites, each cleared through a significance lens and the §4 relevance filter; geography anchors to the World Geography Master, never the RCM [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 12] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Typed v3.1 site rows (§3b) — beats reference these by site_id; the environmental detail rides each row as env texture.

Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)

Pillar-8 doctrine binds every fight: blended mode, a primary and a secondary verb, a three-axis Patterns-Puzzles-Preparation split that is never 100-0-0, phase escalation that evolves the moveset rather than swapping it, at least two counters per signature attack, and a reward on win and on death [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0078]. The sub-bosses spread across Thread 3 (the trade apparatus), Thread 11 (Anansi), and Thread 12 (the Ifa-warded Ajogun); Thread 2's Ouidah python is temple-sacred and deliberately never a combat target, unlike Ch 11's wild river python [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0012].

§10 · Beat graph (was: 5 prose bullets → now: 12 typed v3.1 beats; reveal HELD on every beat)

Beat-scale mode_variety (folds to the chapter mode_variety_check): combat CH12_B06 · puzzle CH12_B03/CH12_B07/CH12_B08 · investigation→puzzle CH12_B09 · learning CH12_B02/CH12_B05/CH12_B11 · character CH12_B01/CH12_B04/CH12_B10 · transformation CH12_B12 → projected five all-Y; dominant_combat_mode puzzle_routed (the Ifa casting, the Anansi Trickster Puzzle, and the Ogboni expose), matching the live entry [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_12]. Thread-join note: the chapter-ambient threads THREAD_04 (Flood Memory), THREAD_05 (Tree of Life / World Axis), THREAD_10 (Mother Goddess / the Agojie, inviolate), THREAD_19 (End-of-World / Eschaton), THREAD_20 (Sacred Objects), THREAD_21 (Music / Sound as Creation), and THREAD_22 (Sacred Stones / Crystals) advance at chapter-ambient level (the preserved Threads block), no single carrier beat — deliberate; every event-backed thread is joined to a named beat.

The v2.5 entry named good/neutral/bad (3 labels). v3.1: the fork options are ACTION-keyed with a direction plus the explicit participate / subvert_and_remain / honorable_open axis plus the mark as a first-class durable write (§5.5.4) the pipelines carry to Ch 39/42. No second fork in Ch 12 — the abiku discernment (CH12_B04) and the Anansi wager (CH12_B08) are exploration_interaction / dialogue micro-forks resolved as ACCUMULATIVE deltas, not authored as full fork_nodes here; a v3 build MAY promote them if their branches carry durable state.

Protected-chapter combat framing (ruling 5; elevated care)

Ch 12 is an elevated-care chapter and community-protected. The Yoruba, the Dahomey, the Dogon, and the Akan, their traditions, the Ogboni and Vodun and Hogon institutions, the Ifa divination, the Dogon cosmology, the Agojie, and the sacred Ouidah python are inviolate and never combat targets; every tradition is depicted per the primary-source record of Bascom, Abimbola, Bay, Herskovits, Griaule and van Beek, and Lovejoy, never exoticized, and never with a stereotyped descriptor [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0002] [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 6.2]. No sacred proper name, no orisha, lwa, or Ifa figure, and no real historical person is placed on a villain; the two European slaver figures are fictional constructed names, the Anansi encounter is a folkloric wit-contest, and the Ajogun, the abiku, and the adze are the tradition's OWN condemned malevolent forces — warded through Ifa, never worshipped, and the exact opposite of the revered orisha, so casting one as an adversary honors rather than inverts the tradition. Combat routes entirely through the Atlantic slave-trade oppressor apparatus and these condemned folklore forces, and the trade's atrocity history is presented as the documented record holds it per Lovejoy, with the Dahomey state's own documented captive-raiding carried honestly and never conflated with the game's negative-consciousness interpretation [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0123] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0109].
