Chapter 11 — Central Africa, Congo Basin: The Forest That Is a Mind, the Death That Is a Birth, and the First Machine That Cannot Eat
Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (golden re-enrichment of the v2.4 build), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the enrich.py pack. ELEVATED-care chapter (CVD §6.2) for the living Baka and Mbuti forest peoples and the Bwiti tradition; the §17.1 hard lines bind, and the Baka, the Mbuti, and the Fang-Bwiti are represented with weight and as they understand themselves — self-naming forest peoples whose knowledge is a documented body of ecological science, pharmacology, music, and political tradition, never the colonial "primitive" or "stateless" trope. Their elders and healers (Ndumu the Baka Jengi-keeper, Apenda the Mbuti net-hunt leader, Molonge the herbalist, Metogo the Bwiti initiate-guide) are inviolate teaching NPCs and never targets. The golden re-enrichment holds the chapter's deliberate design: it does NOT import a folklore malevolent-being boss, because the Mbuti cosmology Turnbull documents holds the forest to be a wholly benevolent parent that only ever sleeps — misfortune is the forest sleeping and needing to be woken by the molimo, never an evil agent — and the neighbouring biloko ogre-spirits belong to the Mongo-Nkundo, not to these peoples (the ENRICHMENT_PROPOSAL [LEAVE] ruling). The single grounded antagonist is the Congo Free State extraction machine — Leopold II's private domain, not a Belgian state until the 1908 annexation — the first mechanism in the arc that simply cannot eat what the forest people are. Reveal-timing note — Thread 3 is present as the mechanism-fully-fails anchor, but the operative is UNAWARE and the family behind the institution is never shown to the player as a pattern; no House-of-Velheim name/family; the Grand Sage is dark. Drafted is not canonical.

Continuity anchor (SSBL §9.3 — Ch 11 start state = Ch 10 end state)
Ch 11 opens from Ch 10's committed end state [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_10]: the protagonist a child (Childhood stage; internal age 12); no traveling companion; Shell (W1) sustained and lately at a canonical peak, with Kira (F1), Khan (G1), Muthu (G2), Kasa (W5), Msafiri (F3, now ranging the African inland chapters), and Desta (G3) accumulating; the Child Familiar still lost and believed dead; the Trade 3 Blacksmithing + Trade 4 Herbalism (Ch 7) and Trade 10 Fishing and Navigation (Ch 8) home bases carried, the Herbalism substrate deepening and the Trade 2 Mining tier-seed held; concealment at CONCEALMENT_WITH_HOSTILE_RECOGNITION, LOW after the Rift-Valley respite; the healer's-child mystery active; the paths near the L3 Neutral band; the first perception-protocol restraint learned at Ch 10; and the antagonist pattern still unseen by the player [SRC: T3_Core_Characters # The Healer's Child]. Ch 11 carries the deep-forest tradition into the teeth of a machine built to consume it, and watches the machine fail.
Body prose
As a child the protagonist follows the rivers west and north out of the great valley, up across the equator, until the sky closes over and the world becomes a single green interior, a forest that is less a place than a mind. Here knowledge is not written or spoken but lived as relationship: a Mbuti hunter reads the whole net of the ecosystem the way the protagonist reads a page, and the oldest lesson in the forest is that you do not own it, you belong to it. After a run of chapters spent learning to hide among people, the forest offers the opposite — a way of being that has no need to hide because it has nothing to defend, only to tend.
They come first to the net-hunt, where a whole camp moves as one body: the long looped nets strung between the trees, the beaters and the women driving the game, the shared kill divided by a law older than any market. Apenda, who leads the hunt, does not so much track the forest as belong to its attention, and it is at his shoulder that the protagonist first feels vril not as a substance to be gathered but as the living field between beings — the relational net itself. In the camp the protagonist learns the deeper thing the Mbuti hold: that the forest is good, a parent that gives, and that when sickness or grief or a bad hunt comes it is not because some evil thing has entered the trees but because the forest has fallen asleep. So the people sing. The molimo rises from the camp at night, the great forest-song that wakes the sleeping forest and reminds it to attend to its children, and there is no devil anywhere in it — only a good world that must, now and then, be sung awake. The protagonist, who has crossed continents full of things that press in from the dark, stands at the edge of a firelight that fears nothing.
Deeper in, toward the Gabon forest, they are allowed to witness a thing the tradition guards closely. An initiate is carried into the Bwiti passage — three days in which the iboga administered by the elders kills the self the initiate began with and returns them a healer, one who has died and come back and can therefore sit with the dying. The protagonist does not take the passage; that belongs to the Bwiti lineage and to the initiate, and the protagonist keeps the vigil at the edge of it, guarding the sleeper and preparing what the elders ask. But watching, they begin to understand the shape their own long ordeal has been taking — that to be hollowed and to come back changed is a road with healers already on it, that the wound the assassin in the south carried and the wound the initiate carries here are the same road walked two ways. It is the first time that rhythm shows itself in a human ceremony rather than in the protagonist's own losses.
Then the forest gives way at a river-crossing, and the crossing is held by a great forest python coiled in the rapids — not malice, only the forest's own weight, a being that can be read and passed (the clean crossing, and the one the forest people would take) or fought in the white water if you would rather have the hide. Beyond it stands the thing that has followed the protagonist across the whole world in one shape or another, and here at last it wears a shape that cannot win. A Congo Free State station sits on the crossing and charges the forest for passage: a rubber-quota post with its sentry line and its ledger-house, run by a cultivated administrator who destroys the record of his atrocities before a European dinner and feels no seam between the two. He is powerful and he is doomed in a way he will never grasp. The forest people live entirely outside his comprehension; no quota, no station, no Force Publique can reach a tradition that was never a thing to be captured, because it was never a thing at all — it is a relationship, and you cannot confiscate a relationship. Breaking his apparatus is a real fight, up through the canopy and down onto the station: the enforcer on the sentry line, the concession agent behind his ledgers, and at last the station-master himself, whose duel is only his patrols' cruelty concentrated into one man. But the deeper victory is one the protagonist only feels — that here, for the first time, is proof the hollowing has a limit.
The paths turn on how the protagonist meets the machine. On the good path they break the extraction and leave the forest to its own keeping and walk away; on the corrosive path they study how the machine works, file the method away, and carry it forward as a tool. And when they leave, the forest does what no person yet has — it recognizes them, not by their face but by the way the living field bends around them, and lets them pass as its own. What that means, the protagonist cannot yet say; only that a whole world has looked at them without a single eye, and found them kin, and pointed them west toward the coast and the next people.
Threads advancing (T0_Thread_Grid, 9 cells)
Thread 1 Vril Parallels — ESCALATION: the first vril-as-relational-field content in the arc, the Baka and Mbuti knowledge-as-ecological-relationship tradition, vril felt not as substance but as the living net between beings, at Apenda's shoulder in the net-hunt [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Thread 2 The Serpent — ANCHOR: the Congo forest python as an ecological participant and forest guardian at the river-crossing, a serpent that is a being rather than a symbol [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Thread 3 Antagonist Family Pattern — ANCHOR: the first mechanism-fully-fails anchor, the Congo Free State industrial-extraction that cannot capture the pre-civilizational continuous tradition; the failure is meaningful at L3 and never shown to the player as a pattern [SRC: T1_Threads_22_Master_References # Thread 3] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043].
Thread 4 Flood Memory — ANCHOR: a regional Central African pre-Bantu-expansion flood-memory surfaced through the Baka and Mbuti's contact-context with their Bantu neighbours (the documented flood myths are largely Bantu-Mongo, referenced here rather than asserted as an indigenous Baka or Mbuti tradition) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Thread 5 Tree of Life / World Axis — ANCHOR: the Iroko as the West African (Yoruba) axis-mundi lineage the Ch 11-13 thread bridges toward, anticipated at the Ch 12 West-African coast; the tree grows in the Congo Basin, but the axis-mundi tradition is West African and not a Baka or Mbuti tradition [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Thread 6 Dying-Rising God — ANCHOR: the Bwiti three-day death-rebirth ceremony with its iboga-mediated phenomenology (per Fernandez), the most physical dying-rising in the ancient-world arc; the Weaving-14 Wounded-Healer mid-arc anchor RECEIVES LINK_0126 from the Ch 7 Marma healer-turned-assassin seed and ORIGINATES LINK_0127 toward the Ch 15 Osiris mythological peak, and the Weaving-10 sacred-plant lineage RECEIVES LINK_0114 (bodhi to iboga) from Ch 6 [SRC: T0_Cross_Cultural_Link_Graph @ LINK_0126] [SRC: T0_Cross_Cultural_Link_Graph @ LINK_0114].
Thread 12 The Oracle / Divination — ANCHOR: the Bwiti ancestor-oracle tradition [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Thread 14 Blood & Sacrifice — ANCHOR: the Baka hunting-respectful-kill tradition and the Mbuti net-hunting shared-kill protocol, blood-and-sacrifice at pre-civilizational depth [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Thread 22 Sacred Stones / Crystals — ANCHOR: the Central African forest-stone tradition [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Civilizational marks (the builders-of-knowledge layer, §9.5 mandatory)
Each mark clears a group-A significance lens and anchors to the RCM verified-canon paragraph or a named primary source (Turnbull; Fernandez; Bahuchet; Vansina; Lewis; Sarno) — the deliberate counter to a myth-only or "primitive-forest" reading of these peoples [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The Mbuti net-hunting cooperative technology and ecological science — the looped-net communal hunt with its beat-and-drive coordination and its law of the shared kill, and the ecosystem-relational-field perception by which a hunter reads the whole living net of the forest, a documented body of applied ecological knowledge (Turnbull, The Forest People) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The Baka and Aka forest pharmacopoeia — one of the deepest continuous documented forest-medicine knowledge systems, the botanical-and-therapeutic corpus that deepens the Herbalism substrate (Bahuchet's Aka-Baka ethnobotany) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The Baka and Aka polyphonic music and the liquindi water-drumming — the yodeled contrapuntal vocal tradition and the water-drumming ensemble, a sophisticated musical-rhythmic body of knowledge recognized as intangible heritage (Sarno; the liquindi ensemble under CHAR_0080) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The Bwiti iboga initiatory pharmacology — the systematized three-day death-rebirth initiation and its iboga phenomenology, a documented and internally coherent initiatory-pharmacological tradition (Fernandez, Bwiti) whose active alkaloid is a real subject of modern study, never a drug-trip trope [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The equatorial-African political tradition — the house, lineage, and Big-Man institutions and the deep history of statecraft and social order across the equatorial forest, the documented refutation of the colonial "stateless primitive" framing (Vansina, Paths in the Rainforests) [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The everything-woven layer (twelve facets, each a real presence, none name-checked)
The Congo Basin is authored as a hub in its forest-peoples-and-extraction web — the Baka and Mbuti forest tradition, the Fang-Bwiti to the west, the West African Iroko axis-mundi lineage the thread bridges toward at Ch 12-13, and the Free State extraction economy that fails against all of it — never an isolated clearing [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].
Combat — three sub-bosses across different threads culminating in one main boss and its colonial apparatus (below); combat frames the extraction institution and its enforcers, and off-Thread-3 through the permitted forest-python fauna, never the Baka, the Mbuti, or their forest tradition, per elevated care and ruling 5 [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0011] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0123].
Exploration — the Ituri forest canopy, the Sangha protected reaches, the Lopé Bwiti context, the river-crossing colonial station, and the deep-forest camps form distinct traversable zones [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 11].
Discovery — the forest-as-relational-field read at ecological depth, the molimo benevolent-forest cosmology, and the Bwiti death-rebirth witnessed [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Puzzles — the three-dimensional canopy traverse, the reading of the forest's relational field, and the timed python river-crossing are the chapter's traversal and perception puzzle surfaces [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Mystery — what it means to be recognized by a whole living field rather than a person, and the healer's-child watching [SRC: T3_Core_Characters # The Healer's Child].
Lore — the Baka and Mbuti forest-knowledge tradition, the molimo benevolent-forest cosmology, the Bwiti iboga ceremony, and the Congo Free State extraction history are readable documented lore per Turnbull, Fernandez, and Hochschild [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Trades — the Baka pharmacopoeia deepens the Herbalism substrate whose home base is Ch 7 South India (the Ch 11 to Ch 40 plant-knowledge continuity bridge, not a new home base), and the honey-guide-bird partnership seeds an animal-communication substrate [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Gathering — forest foraging, medicinal-plant collection, and the honey-guide-bird harvest feed the gathering loop [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Engineering — the Mbuti net-hunting cooperative technology and the forest-shelter construction are the chapter's engineering set-pieces, set against the colonial station's extractive machinery [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Folklore — the Jengi forest-spirit tradition, the molimo forest-song, and the honey-guide-bird partnership are the chapter's living folklore, depicted per primary-source ethnography; the forest is a benevolent parent and there is by design no malevolent forest-being to fight [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0002].
Superstition — the colonial machine's belief that a living tradition can be quota-counted and captured, set against the forest relationship it can never reach, is the chapter's superstition substrate [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Cuisine and daily life — the forager's forest table, the shared net-hunt kill, honey and forest fruit and river fish, and the camp's communal division of food are the chapter's daily-life texture [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
Key sites and spatial layout
Story-load-bearing sites, each cleared through a significance lens and the §4 relevance filter; geography anchors to the World Geography Master, never the RCM [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 11] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
Typed v3.1 site rows (§3b) — beats reference these by site_id; the environmental detail rides each row as env texture.
env: the closed Ituri canopy in three dimensions, the looped-net communal hunt and its beat-and-drive coordination, the living relational field read as vril, and the recognition-via-land at departure; hosts CH11_B01/CH11_B02/CH11_B07/CH11_B13; L1/L2/L3.
env: the Baka forest camp and the Mbuti molimo ground, where Ndumu keeps the Jengi ceremony and Molonge teaches the pharmacopoeia, and the molimo forest-song rises at night to wake a forest that only ever sleeps, no devil in it; hosts CH11_B03; L1/L2.
env: the Lopé and Gabon Bwiti ceremony ground, the three-day iboga-mediated death-rebirth passage witnessed and supported at the vigil's edge, Metogo's guidance, and the ancestor-oracle tradition; protected sacred practice, referenced not reproduced; hosts CH11_B04; L2/L3.
env: the Iroko standing in the Congo Basin forest, the West African (Yoruba) axis-mundi lineage it anticipates toward Ch 12-13, a tradition held by neither the Baka nor the Mbuti; hosts CH11_B05; L2/L3.
env: rapids and a shifting crossing held by a great Congo forest python, a being to be read and passed rather than an enemy to be beaten, the path onward to the colonial station; hosts CH11_B06; L1.
env: the Free State rubber-quota station — sentry line, ledger-house, and station-master's quarters — the extraction apparatus that is the chapter's boss and the first mechanism in the arc to fully fail; hosts CH11_B08/CH11_B09/CH11_B10/CH11_B11/CH11_B12; L1.
Inter-chapter travel — arrival following the rivers out of the Rift Valley into the closed canopy; departure west toward the Ch 12 West-African coast, the Iroko axis-mundi lineage pointing the way [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 11].
Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)
Pillar-8 doctrine binds every fight: blended mode, a primary and a secondary verb, a three-axis Patterns-Puzzles-Preparation split that is never 100-0-0, phase escalation that evolves the moveset rather than swapping it, at least two counters per signature attack, and a reward on win and on death [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0078]. Ch 11's antagonist is wholly the colonial extraction apparatus — the first mechanism in the arc to fully fail — with a fauna crossing for off-Thread-3 spread; no folklore malevolent-being is introduced, by design [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0011].

Metogo, the Bwiti initiate-guide (canonical, CHAR_0082) — the guide to the Bwiti death-rebirth arc, which the protagonist witnesses and supports rather than undergoes, depicted per the Fernandez ethnography, never a target [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0082].

HELD: Dupont fictional/composite, the real accountability record (Leopold II, Casement) undisplaced (HL_0109)
Ch 11 is an elevated-care chapter and community-protected. The Baka and the Mbuti, their forest-knowledge tradition, the Jengi ceremony, the molimo, and the Bwiti death-rebirth are inviolate and never combat targets; the Baka and Mbuti spiritual and ecological practice is depicted per the Turnbull, Fernandez, Bahuchet, Lewis, and Sarno record, never exoticized, never drawn as a "primitive"/"stateless" people, and never rendered as a drug trope [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0002] [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 6.2]. Combat routes entirely through the colonial extraction apparatus and its enforcers — combat against the Leopold-era occupier and the extraction machine is first-class per ruling 5 — plus the permitted forest-python fauna crossing, and never the forest people [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0123]. The Congo Free State atrocity history is presented as the documented record holds it, per Hochschild and the Casement Report, with the real historical accountability (Leopold II and the Free State) intact and never displaced onto a fictional agency, and never conflated on any player-facing surface with the game's negative-consciousness interpretation, which is held distinct at L3 [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0109].
Anti-fringe / Frame-A flags
The forest peoples as "primitive" or "stateless" — at-risk claim: the colonial trope of the forest hunter as a people without knowledge, technology, or political order. Canonical framing: the Mbuti net-hunting cooperative and ecosystem science (Turnbull), the Baka-Aka pharmacopoeia (Bahuchet), the polyphonic music tradition (Sarno), and the deep equatorial political tradition (Vansina) are surfaced as documented bodies of knowledge and institution — each culture self-named, no "tribal"/"primitive"/"exotic" descriptor [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0006] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].
The absent malevolent forest-being (attribution discipline) — at-risk claim: importing a horror-antagonist into the forest for a boss, or dressing the neighbouring Mongo-Nkundo biloko ogre-spirits onto the Baka/Mbuti. Canonical framing: the ENRICHMENT_PROPOSAL [LEAVE] ruling holds — Turnbull documents that the Mbuti hold the forest to be a wholly benevolent parent that only sleeps (misfortune is the forest sleeping, answered by the molimo, never an evil agent), and the biloko belong to the Mongo-Nkundo, not these peoples; the deliberate absence of a folklore malevolent-being is the ethnographic point, and the sole antagonist is the historical extraction machine [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0002].
The Bwiti iboga ceremony as a drug trope — at-risk claim: a Hollywood drug-trip mechanic or a hallucinogen-as-spectacle rendering. Canonical framing: the Bwiti passage is a documented initiatory-pharmacological tradition (Fernandez), referenced not reproduced (HL_0007) — witnessed and supported, never ingested by the player-character — and its alkaloid is a real subject of modern study, not sensation [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0005] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0007].
The Congo as "heart of darkness" — at-risk claim: reading the basin through Conrad's colonial-gaze novel as an ethnographic lens. Canonical framing: Conrad's Heart of Darkness is used only as a period colonial-gaze artifact of the extraction era, never as the lens on the forest peoples, who are rendered strictly per Turnbull, Fernandez, Bahuchet, and Lewis; and the mokele-mbembe cryptid, if it surfaces at all, is folklore held as folklore, never a real surviving-dinosaur claim [SRC: SCIENCE_GROUNDING] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0005].
Three-layer surfacing (CVD §18.2)
L1 surface, self-contained: a canopy-infiltration action beat against a colonial extraction station in the deep forest — traverse the three-dimensional canopy, read and pass the river-python crossing, break the apparatus, and confront the station-master — complete with zero metaphysics [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0047].
L2 investigatable substrate: the Baka and Mbuti forest-knowledge tradition, the molimo cosmology, the Bwiti iboga phenomenology, the honey-guide-bird partnership, and the Congo Free State extraction record are readable documented lore via journal and the forest-as-text [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11].
L3 metaphysical-as-real, never declared: vril is the relational field the Baka and Mbuti live inside; that the extraction machine simply cannot capture a tradition that was never a thing to be captured is the arc's first proof the hollowing has a limit, felt by the protagonist but never shown to the player as a pattern; and the recognition-via-land shows a whole living field perceiving the protagonist without a single eye — all surfaced through the mechanic and the environment, never spoken, no reveal-figure named [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0015] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043].
Asset anchors
creatures_and_fauna — the Congo forest python (an ecological participant, permitted combat only as the river-crossing guardian, never a target of malice), the okapi (Iyenge's tracking), the greater honeyguide bird (Bokumbo's documented human-bird mutualism), and forest elephant and duiker as ambient presences; Msafiri (F3) ranging the African inland [SRC: T0_Creature_Roster] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0005].
architecture_set_dressing — the closed Ituri canopy, the Baka camp and molimo ground, the Bwiti ceremony ground (protected sacred practice, referenced not reproduced), the Iroko axis-mundi tree, and the Free State river-station and ledger-house [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 11] [POPULATE→T0_Theme_Registry].
material_palette and style_register — realistic-ethnographic for the Baka, Mbuti, and Fang-Bwiti peoples; Free State period-material iron and canvas for the station; forest-interior green light, river ochre, rubber-latex and ledger-paper for the extraction apparatus [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 11].
music_mood — the Baka and Aka polyphonic yodeled counterpoint and the liquindi water-drumming and the molimo forest-song, drawn from the documented tradition at reference register with no reproduction of protected sacred music; the station's incongruous European gramophone as the extraction machine's tell [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 11] [POPULATE→T0_Theme_Registry].
voice_and_crowd — Ndumu's and Apenda's and Molonge's teaching registers, the camp at the molimo, and Dupont's three-register colonial voice (French colonial / Flemish background / clipped command, the category-8 affiliation tell); per-NPC registers deferred to the Voice registry [SRC: T99_Story_Spine_Build_Logic # 9.6] [POPULATE→T0_Voice_Registry].
sfx_substrate — canopy, river-rapids, net-hunt, and station terrain enum; forest-interior ambient, the molimo song, the honeyguide call, and the station machinery; the vril-cast tier for the relational-field read and the canopy traverse [SRC: T99_Story_Spine_Build_Logic # 9.6] [POPULATE→T0_SFX_Registry].
fragment carrier and sacred objects — the INSC_77H_CH11_FRAGMENT physical carrier is a Layer-2 fragment of the 77-Hidden-Inscription spine paying off at Ch 76; sacred_objects include the Bwiti ceremonial substrate and the molimo instrument, referenced not reproduced and never player consumables [SRC: T0_Inscription_Spine @ INSC_77H_CH11_FRAGMENT].
Mechanical anchors (per-pipeline; the downstream-alignment contract, each line registry-anchored)
dominant_combat_mode: vril_management [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_11]; mode-variety note — the prior two nodes are Ch 9 stealth and Ch 10 environmental, so Ch 11 vril_management holds HL_0049 (no consecutive repeat, and three-plus distinct per five-window), realized as the protagonist managing their own vril across the high-vril Ituri relational-field canopy fight [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0049].
main_boss_win_condition: part-break the colonial extraction apparatus into a pacify or HP finish, combat framing the institution and never the Baka or Mbuti [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0011]; agility_course an Ituri three-dimensional canopy traverse, arboreal vertical-and-lateral movement biome-rotated against Ch 10's ravine descent, with a net-hunting-cooperative Puzzle variant, one course per chapter across three variants [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0079].
abilities_unlocked: none new at Ch 11 — the kit carried from Ch 2-10 holds and no Ability_Tree row anchors here; the Neophyte floor across every capability holds (per-capability per HL_0026), the substrate-perception onset still far ahead at the Ch 15 Adeptus-Minor crossing (HL_0028) [SRC: T0_Ability_Tree_Registry @ A_E_007] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0028].

weapons: no new roster acquisition; chapter_anchored_weapon_add none — the first canonical Brute chapter-anchored weapon was placed at the Ch 9-10 slot [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0056].
trades: no home base here; substrate only — the Baka pharmacopoeia deepens the Herbalism substrate whose home base is Ch 7 (the Ch 11 to Ch 40 plant-knowledge continuity bridge), and the honey-guide-bird partnership seeds an Animal-Communication substrate ahead of its Ch 12 home base [SRC: T0_Trade_Registry @ TRADE_04] [SRC: T0_Trade_Registry @ TRADE_01].
familiars: no new bond at Ch 11 — Msafiri (Flying, slot F3) continues from its Ch 8 bond, ranging the African inland chapters (Ch 11-13); Shell (W1) remains the sustained-bond Water familiar and Desta (G3) carries its Ch 9-10 bond; Kira (F1), Khan (G1), Muthu (G2), and Kasa (W5) carried; the Sanur Octopus (W4) and Paravani the peacock (F2) stay deferred and gated; the Child Familiar remains lost and believed dead [SRC: T3_Familiars_Named # Msafiri] [SRC: T3_Familiars_Named # Shell].

Decisions surfaced (elevated-care; the SSBL Appendix-B ad-hoc Stage-2 fallback surfaces here; Josh rules at Range Review)
Ch 11 surfaced the SSBL Appendix-B Entries 18-21 recognition-register canon, the elevated-care cultural audit, and one §17.1-adjacent naming item; all three were RESOLVED at the RR-12 adversarial deep-dive (2026-07-07) and are PRESERVED here; the golden re-enrichment adds no new open fork. Josh retains override at the Range Review.
RESOLVED (RR-12, 2026-07-07, adversarial deep-dive) — PRESERVED: the SSBL Appendix-B Entry-18 recognition-register reconciliation resolves in favor of the rebuilt escalation as canonical, with no Ch 2 pirate-captain retrofit. The recognition-via-land first-instance is this chapter's Mbuti net-hunting perceiver (Apenda, CHAR_0081, the forest already knows), following the Ch 5 Datu Siahaan FAMILY_BRIEFED description-circulation and the Ch 8 Sayyid FULLY_AWARE first hostile recognition [SRC: T0_Antagonist_Network_Registry @ NW_0003] [SRC: T99_Story_Spine_Build_Logic # Migration Execution].
RESOLVED (RR-12, 2026-07-07, adversarial deep-dive) — PRESERVED: the two Ch 11 real-individual NPC names are reframed to constructed in-register working names. Kenge (CHAR_0081), named for a real individual in Turnbull's Mbuti ethnography, becomes Apenda (a Bila-Bantu-register personal name, the register the Mbuti speak). Moko (CHAR_0078), one letter from Turnbull's real Mbuti elder Moke yet tagged Baka, becomes Ndumu (a Baka-register personal name that drops the near-homophone). The reframe changes no story content — every documented practice stays as Turnbull, Fernandez, Bahuchet, Lewis, and Sarno substrate — applying the Ch 9 Abuna precedent that a real named individual is not dressed in an invented teaching-NPC persona; the live Character_Index rows and the _source T3 §3.11 are aligned to Apenda and Ndumu [SRC: T0_Character_Index @ CHAR_0081] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0002].
The Bwiti death-rebirth initiation, reference versus reproduction — RESOLVED against HL_0007 and §6.2 (witness/support, no player ingestion): the three-day iboga ceremony is a living protected sacred practice, so the protagonist witnesses and supports it — vigil and guardianship of the initiate NPC across the three days, gathering and preparing the ceremonial substrate for the Bwiti elders who administer it, and aiding the returned healer — and never ingests iboga or undergoes the passage as a player-character action; the ceremony is depicted per Fernandez as observed sacred practice, never a drug-trip mechanic or a player consumable [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0007] [SRC: T1_CVD_Creative_Vision_Document # 6.2].
The colonial Baron as a deplorable oppressor boss — RESOLVED: combat frames the Free State extraction institution and its enforcers, never the Baka or Mbuti, per elevated care and ruling 5; the atrocity history is depicted per Hochschild and the Casement Report as documented record with real accountability intact, and never conflated with the negative-consciousness interpretation on any player surface [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0123] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0109].
The benevolent-forest cosmology and the un-imported malevolent-being (golden re-enrichment) — RESOLVED (ENRICHMENT_PROPOSAL [LEAVE]): the chapter deliberately introduces no folklore malevolent-being boss, because Turnbull documents the Mbuti benevolent-forest cosmology (the forest sleeps and is sung awake by the molimo, misfortune never an evil agent) and the neighbouring biloko ogre-spirits belong to the Mongo-Nkundo, not the Baka or Mbuti; the deliberate absence is the ethnographic point, the colonial machine the sole grounded antagonist, and the molimo cosmology is now surfaced in the body, the folklore facet, and the anti-fringe flags [SRC: T1_Research_Corpus_Master # Ch 11] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0002].
The mechanism-fully-fails framing under the pattern-reveal rule — RESOLVED: the player sees a colonial machine defeated and the forest people persisting intact, while that the hollowing has a limit stays an L3 truth never shown as a pattern, per Josh's Ch 8 ruling [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0043].
The v3 typing of the machine-resolution fork — RESOLVED (v3 conversion, 2026-07-14; Josh-override-able at any RR): the v2.5 entry named good/neutral/bad as the three resolution-branch labels for "how the protagonist meets the machine." v3 types this as FORK_CH11_A, kind combat_resolution (the direct aftermath of the Dupont/apparatus defeat, distinct from CH_12's assimilation-kind fork), magnitude SUBSTANTIAL per the v2.5 entry's own integrity_divergence line ("Substantial-class beats"), action-keyed options with a direction column, and bands held only as the derived §18 axis [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 5.1].
The Ch-11→Ch-40 mark wiring (IR-2, connective-web) — RESOLVED-APPLIED (creative-within-vision): the v2.5 entry asserted the resolution's direction but named no forward consumer, leaving the doctrine's own worked example (T1_Integrity_Paths §4.9 — "a cousin of someone the player helped in Ch 11 responds differently" at the modern revisit) unwired. FORK_CH11_A's mark_write is now community-keyed {mbuti_ituri: …, forward_track [CH_40]}, matching WHOLE_ARC_CONNECTIVE_WEB_INVENTORY.md's IR-2 exactly: the Ch-40 Congo Basin Modern revisit reads the mark as the modern forest-community's recovered-or-damaged state and a descendant NPC's reception, opening/closing aid, forest-pharmacopoeia lore, and faction pricing at the modern extraction fight, non-gating. Ch 40 itself is not yet v3-typed to consume the mark structurally (it currently pays off geography and continuity only, per IR-2's own note that Ch 40 is "integrity-INVARIANT") — the forward_track therefore raises the expected cross-file WARN until Ch 40's own v3 conversion adds the reading beat [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 4.9] [SRC: WHOLE_ARC_CONNECTIVE_WEB_INVENTORY # IR-2].
The BE_0011_S3 registry re-ground (grounded error-correction at the v3 conversion) — RESOLVED-APPLIED: the v3 FK join surfaced a drifted T0_Boss_Encounter cell — BE_0011_S3's primary_verb read "strike," contradicting both the CH_11.md v2.5 Boss-structure block ("Primary verb traverse… secondary verb evade…") and the body prose's explicit framing of the python as "a being to be read and passed rather than an enemy to be beaten" (no striking action anywhere in the encounter's own counters); BOSS_PERSONAS does not contradict either reading. Corrected the registry cell to traverse (spine-grounded, personas-silent-but-consistent), baseline-declared in the same commit [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0011] [SRC: CH_11 # Boss structure].
