Chapter 10 — East African Rift Valley: The Oldest Valley, the Marks Deeper Than Writing, and the Death-Spirits the Healer Drives Back

Story Spine entry, v3.1 beat→fork→state event graph (docs/SPINE_SCHEMA_v3.md), restructured in place from the v2.5 cascade build (golden re-enrichment of the v2.4 build), spine_status drafted. The v2.5 anchors, prose, source-anchor provenance, and reveal discipline are preserved; v3 re-shapes the site/boss/beat/side-quest/scene/state blocks into the typed machine layer (join-and-type — no new canon authored). Grounded on the enrich.py pack, BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0010, and the golden re-enrichment's //gauwasi restoration. HIGH-care chapter (CVD §6.2) for the living Southern San traditions; the §17.1 hard lines bind, and the /Xam, //Gwi, and Ju|'hoansi (!Kung) peoples are represented with weight and as they understand themselves — three distinct self-naming peoples, never a monolithic "San" and never the colonial "bushman" exonym (the RR-12 de-flattening PRESERVED), their shamans and elders (Kxao the n/um master-healer, //Kushe the arrow-poison keeper, Debe the tracker) inviolate teaching NPCs and never targets, the rock-art continuity a nameless role-title never a personal name. The golden re-enrichment grounds the encroaching shadow (formerly a generic "negative-consciousness manifestation with no malice") in the tradition's OWN cosmology: the //gauwasi, the spirits of the dead who press at the edge of the dance-fire and fire invisible arrows of sickness into the living, opposed by the n/um healer who boils energy, enters the !kia trance, sees them, and drives them back (Marshall; Katz, Boiling Energy; Biesele) — the //gauwasi and the lesser god //Gauwa the tradition's own adversarial death-spirits and adversary-deity, the great god and the healers and the community honored, never confused with the revered echo. Reveal-timing note — Thread 3 is NOT_PRESENT (the one place the suppression apparatus never reached, an L3 truth never shown to the player as a pattern); no House-of-Velheim name/family/pattern; the Grand Sage is dark. Drafted is not canonical.

Continuity anchor (SSBL §9.3 — Ch 10 start state = Ch 9 end state)

Ch 10 opens from Ch 9's committed end state [SRC: T0_Chapter_Index @ CH_09]: a young elven child (Childhood; internal age 11); no traveling companion, with the Simien pastoralist Tesfa having bridged the protagonist south into the Rift; Shell sustained, Kasa (W5) and Msafiri (F3) carried from Ch 8, and Desta the Ethiopian Wolf (G3) bonded across Ch 9-10 as the highland-to-valley guide; the earlier familiars (Kira, Khan, Muthu) accumulating; the Child Familiar still lost and believed dead; the Trade-10 Swahili home base and the Trade-2 Mining tier-seed carried; concealment at CONCEALMENT_WITH_HOSTILE_RECOGNITION, eased by Ethiopia's positive recognitions; the healer's-child mystery active; the paths near the L3 Neutral band; and the antagonist pattern still unseen by the player [SRC: T3_Core_Characters # The Healer's Child]. Ch 10 descends into deep time and finds the one place the suppression never reached.

Body prose

As a child the protagonist walks down into the oldest valley in the world, and the descent is also a descent through time: strata that hold the first tools human hands ever shaped, lakebeds that swelled to inland seas and shrank again, a floor of the earth that has been keeping records since long before anyone could read them. They follow the long chain of Rift lakes as they go — Turkana and Tanganyika and Victoria, the soda-pink shallows of Bogoria and the freshwater sweep of Naivasha — water that still holds the memory of an age when the rains came and the basins rose. After a run of chapters spent hiding among people, the valley offers something the protagonist did not know they needed — a place with no one to hide from. The people who live in this valley now are the Hadza, foragers of the Lake-Eyasi shore who still keep the old way of the bow, the baobab, and the honeyguide they call to and answer — not a relic of anyone's past but a living people going about a living present, whom the protagonist meets as who they are and learns the Rift's own ground from first, before the valley opens any older door.

And the descent through deep time opens the valley's oldest layer of all — the continent's deep symbolic cradle, where the far-southern San tradition still echoes older than every empire the protagonist has crossed put together. Reached through the valley's time-fluctuation current (the same current that carried them down among the first tools), it is a continuity, not the present-day Rift, and they are careful to learn it as its own peoples name it: a Ju|'hoansi shaman who reads the world through a trance the protagonist has no name for, a woman elder who knows an arrow-poison pharmacopoeia older than any book, a tracker who reads the deep-valley ground, and on the rock walls of the /Xam the oldest marks of all — zigzags and grids and nested curves that are not writing and are somehow deeper than writing, the shapes a mind sees from the inside when it goes far enough into itself. The shaman senses something unusual in the protagonist, an unusual concentration of the vital-force his people call n/um, and asks nothing about it; in this valley, to be unusual is not to be hunted. Before the healer will let them stand at the dimming panel, the protagonist climbs alone into the cold Afromontane heights of the Bale Mountains, where the thin air opens a threshold and a trance-pull tests whether they can hold their own inner heat steady and read the true way through — and they cross it and come back down, steadier than they went up.

The trouble here is not a person, and it is not nothing. On one panel the ancient marks have begun to dim, a shadow settling over a vision the tradition has kept bright across untold generations — and the shaman names it before the protagonist can: the //gauwasi, the spirits of the dead who gather in the dark beyond the dance-fire and fire invisible arrows of sickness into the living to pull them toward death, and behind them the lesser god who sends them. There is no one to strike and nothing a blade can reach; what faces the //gauwasi is not a weapon but the dance. At the healer's shoulder the protagonist learns the discipline they will need for the rest of their life, taught where the stakes are gentlest and against a foe the tradition itself has always fought: to read the true pattern from the sickness-shadow, to boil their own inner heat and hold it steady, to withhold every violent impulse, and only then — as the healer sees the arrows and draws them out — to lift the shadow away and leave the old brightness whole. The great god and the healers are honored; the //gauwasi are the dead the healers drive back, never the revered vision they threaten.

And the valley gives a gift the protagonist cannot yet understand: standing before the oldest serpent they have ever stood before, they feel that these marks are part of something larger, a map drawn across the whole world by hands that knew what the protagonist is only beginning to feel. What that map is, they cannot say. But down here, where the record runs deepest, they feel for the first time that whatever has been hollowing the world did not reach everything — that something very old slipped the net and is still, faintly, shining. When they climb back out of the valley and turn onward, the oldest marks travel with them like a thread pulled southward, toward older painted stone still waiting in the mountains far ahead.

Threads advancing (T0_Thread_Grid, 8 cells; Thread 3 NOT_PRESENT)

Civilizational marks (the builders-of-knowledge layer, §9.5 mandatory)

Each mark clears a group-A significance lens and anchors to the RCM verified-canon paragraph or a named primary source (Bleek-Lloyd; Lewis-Williams; Marshall; Katz, Boiling Energy) [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Everything-woven (the twelve facets, each a real presence, none name-checked)

The Rift Valley is authored as a hub in its deep-time and living-San web — the cradle of made things, the deep symbolic continuity forward to the Ch 13 Drakensberg, the African-Humid-Period flood arc — never an isolated gorge [SRC: CROSS_CULTURAL_WEAVE].

Key sites and spatial layout

Story-load-bearing sites, each cleared through a significance lens and the §4 relevance filter; geography anchors to the World Geography Master, never the RCM [SRC: T1_World_Geography_Master # Ch 10] [SRC: SIGNIFICANCE_LENSES].

Typed v3.1 site rows (§3b) — beats reference these by site_id; the environmental detail rides each row as env texture.

Boss structure (§9 thin join index — phases are beats; the narrative lives in the beat graph)

Sub-bosses across different threads feed one environmental atmospheric main encounter; every fight is blended, primary-and-secondary-verb, three-axis (never 100-0-0), with phase escalation that evolves the moveset (HL_0078), at least two counters per signature attack, and a reward on win and on death [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0078]. Ch 10 is the arc's first environmental atmospheric boss and teaches the four-step protocol the whole arc reuses [SRC: BOSS_PERSONAS # BE_0010].

Thread-join note: THREAD_22 (Sacred Stones/Crystals — the Blombos ochre tradition) advances at chapter-ambient level (the Threads block), no single carrier beat — geographically Cape-adjacent, a deep-time-cradle continuity referenced alongside the /Xam rock art rather than a site the protagonist visits; every other chapter thread is joined to a named beat.

§10b · Fork graph (one fork; the four-band protocol-execution quality typed, bands DERIVED never option labels)

The v2.5 entry named truly_good/good_enough/neutral/evil as option labels — the retired vocabulary. v3.1 keys the options by ACTION with a direction; the five texture bands are the DERIVED axis (§18). mark_write types none here: Ch 13 and Ch 41 are verified (read directly) to consume this content as an INSCRIPTION/knowledge chain — Kxao himself reappears as a teacher (CH_13.md) and the same rock-art resolves to Vimana Coordinate 1 of 6 at adult inscription mastery (CH_41.md) — never a community-standing mark, so no forward_track is asserted; the real differentiated consequence routes through ws.community_state_per_region (WS_019, whose own registry definition names the Ch59_65_revisit_renderer as a consumer), not the mark mechanism [SRC: T1_Integrity_Paths_Worldstates_Master # 5.1] [SRC: T0_Worldstate_Variables @ WS_019].

Side-questlines (§11 — machine gate + beat interleave)

Protected-chapter combat framing (ruling 5)

Ch 10 is a HIGH-care, protected-people chapter with no antagonist operative present (Thread 3 NOT_PRESENT). The three Southern San peoples depicted — the /Xam, the //Gwi, and the Ju|'hoansi — are distinct self-naming continuous traditions (never a monolithic "San," never the colonial "bushman" exonym, the RR-12 de-flattening preserved) and their shamans and elders inviolate; no sacred or deity proper name sits on a mortal NPC (the Kxao rule; /Kaggen reverts to a pure /Xam deity referenced only as cited folklore). The environmental boss is nameless by §17.1 discipline, and combat routes only against the //gauwasi (the tradition's OWN adversarial death-spirits, the sickness-arrow-firing dead the n/um healer battles in the !kia dance — never the revered echo, never the ancestors as venerated, and never Islam-style-conflated with the faith of the living), permitted fauna, and the protagonist's own astral trial, never these peoples, their spiritual practice, or the genuine echo [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0003] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0123] [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0002]. The /Xam rock-art is depicted per the Bleek-Lloyd corpus and the Lewis-Williams model, the //Gwi and Ju|'hoansi healing-dance and the //gauwasi///Gauwa cosmology per the Marshall, Lee, and Katz record. As a chapter without a combatant antagonist, the required playable layer is the environmental perception boss, never combat absence (HL_0051); and all perception stays Neophyte, an entoptic-and-attunement read, never a tier-6 vril-signature read (HL_0028) [SRC: T0_Hard_Lines @ HL_0051].

Decisions surfaced

The Ch 10 §17.1 items (the shaman-elder NPC name, the San multi-people de-flattening, the "bushman" exonym) and the sub-boss population were resolved at RR-12 and are PRESERVED; the golden re-enrichment grounds the shadow within vision; the v3 conversion (2026-07-14) resolves the machine-typing decisions below.
