As a child the protagonist crosses open water for the first time since the cave, apprenticed on the crossing to a captain who teaches them a sewn-plank craft and never asks about the cloth kept wound over the ears against the sun. The crossing teaches a truth the jungle never could: that distance hides a person better than any cave, that strangers across an ocean share more words than either expects, and that survival is turning, slowly, from a problem of terrain into a problem of people.
They make landfall at a coral-stone island city, and here commerce becomes a practice rather than a trade — buying and selling as a kind of language, where what a person carries into a market and what they carry out of it says who they are. Coasts are crossroads, and crossroads are the easiest place in the world to disappear; for the first time since the cave the protagonist has a bench that is theirs to return to, a craft with a door that opens twice. The first warm thing they ever had bit them once and bolted into the dark of the cave and did not come back, and some part of them has not let a living thing that close since; it costs them the whole crossing to let even a bench and a door begin to matter. But the sea around the reefs is not only water. The fishermen speak of an ill-intentioned thing that dwells in the coral and the deep, a spirit that founders ships and drowns swimmers and rides the reef like a hazard with a will — and they are not wrong to fear it, for on this coast the unseen is held as real as the tide. And someone has bent that thing to a profit: a sorcerer from the sorcery-island to the north has bound the reef-spirit and looses it on ships marked for wreck and salvage, in the pay of the man the whole chapter is really about. Against it stand the coast's own healers, who know the ngoma that faces such spirits and the difference between the craft that harms and the craft that heals; siding with them, the protagonist meets a malevolence the tradition itself names and wards, and learns to tell the sorcerer's bound spirit and the sorcerer's harmful craft from the healers who oppose them and the faith the whole coast keeps.
And here, for the first time, an enemy who knows. Not a man worn hollow and driven the way the hunter was, but one wholly and knowingly himself in what he has become, who took the emptying-bargain with open eyes — a wealthy dhow-merchant whose hold carries captives taken on the slave route, and who recognizes the protagonist not by their ears but by a description moving up the trade-lanes since the eastern seas. Concealment was always the whole of the defense; now there is a seeing it cannot answer. What this enemy is part of, whether he stands alone, they cannot yet make out — only that they were known on sight. What keeps the lesson from breaking them is that two others see just as truly and do not hunt: the captain, and an elder at the edge of a protected forest — the first proof that to be recognized can also be safe. On the good path the captives in the hold are not merely uncovered but freed, and one of them, a man with his own long road toward refuge, walks out of the dark of the ship into the Sufi community's keeping.
Then the letter. The one entrusted in the south, unreadable until a wandering scholar reads it here, and it does not say what the protagonist feared. It says they are not the only one who has crossed between worlds — that someone else has stood where they came from, that someone reads its script without having gone, that someone speaks its language through the trade-lanes. The chapter ends holding a mystery larger than one child's hiding, pointing north, beside a place they could come back to. The paths turn at the leaving: a promise to return, a promise left ambiguous, or the captain's savings taken and a pre-dawn slip.
